this is my favorite "i met a celebrity in new york" story:

way back in 2014 i was a groomsman in my friend's wedding in brooklyn. he was staying in a hotel suite, and i came up there the morning of the wedding to prep with the rest of the wedding party

while we were getting ready, he remarked that the people next door to his suite were up late having incredibly loud sex. he and his friends were partying so it didn't really bother them, they just thought it was funny.

the photographer was there too to take a few pics. he stepped out to grab new equipment, and when he came back he goes "dude, I think I saw DMX in the hallway". he then went back out.

the groom was still getting ready, so he threw a towel on and ran out of the bathroom because he didn't want to miss him, but before he could reach the door, fucking DMX himself walked in with the photographer. he was the one in the suite next door.

he gave the groom well wishes and advice about about how it's a "big commitment to only one pussy". i was so shocked i didnt even get a pic in the room, but i still have this one on my phone when we saw them again downstairs:

DMX's Promise

It's not the knowledge that X gon give it to me, I can deal with that. He was clearly and repeatedly upfront with this information - crystal clear intentions. It's not knowing when - the anticipation, even a burst of anxiety. Was it offered at some point and I missed out? No, DMX be praised, he wouldn't do that.

One wonders, as the world burns and my animus withers in rote repetition - will it live up to the hype at this point? The idea that I'll be given it at an unknown time in the future, by X of course, has been a real comfort to me during some tough times. Honestly, maybe that's enough. This covenant - X and I, the giving of it - might be more powerful than actually being given it by X. It might not be something one can even give. It's possible that it is shared and cherished instead, even by X. The great wheel turns, the death of ego, the gift enriches the giver.

Indeed, it's easy to overlook X's willingness to give it and his public vow to do so. One should ask, who gives it to X? If it truly is metaphysical or even conceptual, then X is not the owner of it but the repository. The chalice. Still, it's spiritually fulfilling and an act of kindness to consider the needs of X.

I confess, I still remain troubled. X was a professional lyricist and his offerings may contain depths as yet unplumbed. A classic rhetorical device of the greats is shifting or obscuring tense to open words up to interpretation. What if my premise entire is utterly flawed? I've long believed that X was gon' give it to me personally, but a close read could suggest present tense. Not as a prediction of future goings-on, but a declaration . This moment, here and now, it is given and savoured. A butterfly from a clockwork chrysalis digitised and made immortal. The moment is past but can always be experienced. It - given once - but always available. It, then, was given by X to you in the plural form. To all of us to share and enjoy, and it remains indivisible; retaining its power and value no matter how much it is given.

An anti-capitalist analysis could conclude that it even increases in value through subverting and decommodifying itself, throwing off the shackles of intellectual property. Enriching the proletariat spiritually at the expense of the bourgeois - who weren't given it, they had to buy it instead. They chose to buy it because they'd never think of sharing it, never knowing it can't be owned. Comrade X never said 'X gon sell it to ya' - it is freely given and shared with all - a revolutionary act.

In conclusion, X gon give it to ya.
