Hey, me again! For the ask game... 2, 8 or 16, 17, 18, 35. Maybe this can be set during your wywt series (again, if not that’s okay!) and it’s a little after May’s death or something and Peter wakes up from a horrible nightmare and goes to Tony, who doesn’t expect Peter to come to him, but gladly accepts it. If not, that’s totally fine!! :)

This is in the wywt verse, but I’m going to change things around a bit, just cause I’ve already written that scenario a couple of times. Hope that’s ok!

Tony inched Peter’s door open, feeling like an idiot. He shouldn’t need to check to make sure his kid was still breathing just cause he’d had yet another nightmare. He was a grown, logical, genius adult. He knew real from imagined. But his heart was beating so hard he could feel it in his fingertips and his lungs weren’t expanding fully and logic wouldn’t help that. Not like Peter’s breathy snores would.

He peered in, planning on just getting a glimpse of the sleeping teen and then retreating back to his own room, but he paused when he saw Peter laying in bed, his face illuminated by his phone screen.

“Tony?” Peter asked, putting his phone down and propping himself on one elbow.

“It’s late, kiddo. Shouldn’t you be asleep?” Tony asked, stepping further into the room. Maggie sat up, greeting him with a soft yip and happy panting. 

“I’m assuming you don’t want me pointing out the hypocrisy in that,” Peter snorted. He sat up, reaching over to turn on his bedside lamp. The dim orange light filtered over the room, highlighting the messy sheets and askew pillows. Looked like Tony wasn’t the only one who’d had a rough night. 

Peter scooted to the middle of bed, pushing Maggie along with him, so Tony had room to sit down. They leaned against the headboard, their shoulders brushing as they breathed for a long moment.

“Nightmares?” Peter finally whispered. 

Tony huffed a humorless laugh. “Yeah, I... I’m sorry, buddy, I don’t know why I--”

“Was it about me?” Peter interrupted, never one to allow Tony to wallow in self-deprecation.

Tony paused, sighed. “It was about a lot of things. But, yeah. You definitely... featured.”

Peter hummed, sinking further into the pillows. His head was tilted to one side like he was thinking. 

“I come to you when I have nightmares,” Peter said. He tugged Tony’s sleeve, making him sink down, too, until they were both almost laying down. “What’s the difference?”

“Well, you’re a kid and I’m an adult,” Tony scoffed. And more than that, Peter was Tony’s kid, and Tony was Peter’s parent. Tony had to be strong for him, be a source of support, not a burden on Peter’s already weighed-down shoulders.

“I’m not that much of a kid anymore, Tony,” Peter gently reminded him. “I don’t come to you because you’re the adult, I come to you because you make me feel safe.”

Tony swallowed down the surge of emotion. All he wanted in life was for Peter to be safe and happy. If his presence brought him even a little bit of security in his tumultuous life, a little bit of a safe harbor to rest in, than he was succeeding in his role as protector and comforter. It was a doubt that never fully left him, but here Peter was, casually reassuring him that he was doing ok.

Tony wrapped his arm around Peter, pulling him closer to Tony’s side.

“Yeah?” He asked.

“Yeah,” Peter nodded, resting his head on Tony’s shoulder, his fingers curling into the worn t-shirt he was wearing. “Do... do I make you? Feel safe?”

Tony had never thought about that before. His entire focus, all the time, in waking and sleeping, with every breath and heartbeat, was Peter’s safety. If Peter was safe, he didn’t care about himself. But there was something about having the kid next to him, solid and warm, that settled in Tony’s blood like the first sip of coffee on a cold morning. It wasn’t just love, because Tony loved Peter all the time, even when he was angry or hurt, even when he was terrified. 

It was peace, he decided. Having Peter there made all the buzzing anxiety and racing thoughts still, made the shadows retreat in the face of his light. Peter was his own safe harbor, his resting place. His home.

“Yeah, buddy. You do,” Tony whispered. 

Peter curled closer to him, wrapping his arm around Tony’s waist. “Ok. Good. Cause--cause you always say that you’ve got me, well... I’ve got you, too. I’ve got you.”

Tony closed his eyes, buried his nose in Peter’s hair. 

“Stay here tonight,” Peter murmured, his words already heavy with sleep. Maggie was snoring her wheezing snores behind Tony, completely oblivious. Tony smiled.

“Thanks, kiddo.”
