OJT EATS | Kricket Canary Wharf

Over the last few years, Canary Wharf has been working hard to make itself more appealling than just a financial centre where people only go to because their office is there. Part of that has been getting a bunch of new restaurants to open up there, one of which is Kricket. This Canary Wharf outpost is their third one in total after their original in Brixton and their 2nd in Soho. Curious to see what it was like, we headed on down.

The menus across their locations are relatively similar. First up, we ordered the samphire pakora. Really well fried and crispy but we felt that there was just a little bit too much of the tamarind ketchup. The chilli garlic mayo that it came with was super more-ish!

Next up was the mutton seekh kebab. This came with pickled onions and an anchovy and walnut raita. The raita was an interesting flavour combination but one that worked. The mutton kebab was juicy and flavourful with just the right amount of char.

The place does a few different kulchas. We went straight for the most interesting (at least to us) version: the blue cheese and sage. The bread itself was delicious. It was light with crispy edges and with a pretty strong blue cheese flavour to it. Not flavours we were expecting in an Indian restaurant but tasty nonetheless.

This was the Mangalorean Chicken Gassi. It's a coconut chicken curry with just a little bit of a kick. The chicken had a crispy skin on it and the curry was rich, spiced and perfect with that blue cheese kulcha.

We love a good black dal and this was indeed a good black dal. This was creamy and rich. It was bursting with flavour and just needed more good bread to mop it up with.

Luckily, that's what we had with this brown butter paratha. It was flakey, stretchy, slightly chewy; all good things when it comes to paratha. With the size of the bowl of dal, we could've easily finished off another one or two of these!

Kricket is a great new addition to the Canary Wharf restaurant scene. Canary Wharf is definitely coming a long way from where it used to be and has itself a number of really good places to eat now. We'd definitely go back to Kricket for another meal.

OJT EATS | Miznon

Miznon has been in Soho for a while now; it's the place with a row of cauliflowers both by the bar and by the window, and has been churning out both whole roasted cauliflowers and delicious filled pitta breads all of that time. We were looking for a quick and tasty lunch so we headed on over.

This is their signature dish and the reason why the whole place is filled with cauliflowers. This thing is so good. It's roasted to the point where it falls apart with just a poke of a fork. It's buttery, tender and even the stalk is soft enough that you can cut through it with a fork (although in this case, a knife is more practical).

Onto a couple of the pittas. This one is the falafel burger. Unlike the usual balls of falafel that you normally get, this one is quite literally a single burger shaped falafel patty. It comes with tomatoes, pickles and a fairly large drizzle of tahini. The pitta was incredibly fluffy and soft, the falafel crispy and herby and there was also a fair amount of heat coming through from chopped chillis. This was just really good!

The other pitta we got is a weekend only schnitzel pitta. The pitta, as you'd expect was every bit as good as the last one. The chicken in this was actually really well fried; crispy and juicy. There was some pickle, cabbage, a lot of tahini and a like a spicy paste that had a very mild heat to it but was very tasty. It's a shame that this is only available at the weekend as I'd definitely be happy eating this fairly regularly.

This place is a little gem in the heart of Soho that is perfect for a light lunch or a quick bite. We think we spied potentially refillable pittas and tahini which we are definitely going to ask about next time as the pitta bread here is as good as any other place in London.
