Kung Fu Panda 2 Scene Analysis + Discussion Post
Hey, all! Here's a KFP2 scene analysis because I felt like it. 🤷‍♀️
I have an itch to scratch and I'm going to make all of you read about it. I've been revisiting KFP2's remarkable storytelling methods—namely for conveying strong emotions without relying on dialogue and putting more faith in the narrative—and when I got to the harbor scene, I couldn't help but write something up on it. In general, writing short essays on scenes/sequences is a great writing exercise that I would recommend for fellow writers because it's a big help when you're trying to emulate a certain style or feel in your work. KFP2 is a great movie and I love it, so I often refer back to it when I'm struggling.
In short, this is me gushing. I know as a fandom we've talked this part of the movie to death a hundred times over, but it's a scene that deserves it. I'm going to be focusing on the aspects of it that interest me most, but the final battle following this scene is just as worthy of being fawned over. I am a KFP fan through-and-through and every scene (in this film especially) deserves its own discussion post. Unfortunately, I'm employed.
I've never done a dedicated sequence analysis before, but I've been delving back into studying animation and that paired with my long-time love for storytelling is more than enough to make me want to do a Tumblr deep dive on this 20~ second master-class in storytelling.
To begin, let's take a look at what's happening here:
Tumblr media
Po swims to Tigress to make sure that she's okay. He holds her hand and gets close to her, which is something we can assume he would never do otherwise. I'll cite the attack-hug; we witnessed his (albeit completely understandable) reaction to Tigress initiating physical contact, and his instinct was to freeze in place. It tells us that physical contact is uncommon and maybe even a little awkward for them, and yet, he grabs her hand without hesitation.
My heart...ugh. I was little when this came out and I was STUPEFIED. I also realized I wanted to make movies, though, so I guess it worked out. 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media
Plus the little thumb-hold from Tigress. I'm nauseous. Kill me.
It's also worth mentioning that despite the fact that Po audibly says her name, she doesn't respond to hearing him. She responds to feeling him. She doesn't start to lift her head until he touches her.
Earlier in the film, it had been made a point that she "feels nothing," which was intended to refer to both her hands and her emotions. She physically and mentally beat herself up for 20 years until she couldn't feel the hurt anymore.
Even so, it only takes Po to unravel that. This is the movie further cementing the franchise-long theme of Po bringing inner peace to the valley. On a more personal note, it's also the movie telling us that Tigress's jadedness only goes as far as she lets it. She is capable of recovery, capable of feeling—it only matters that she allows herself to have those moments.
Tumblr media
She looks up. She's relieved. She couldn't save China, but she saved Po. She didn't fail in protecting him this time. She did her job. There's a beautiful contrast between what she's feeling and what he's feeling but they share a point—kind of like a venn diagram. Both feel some kind of relief, however brief. As for their differences, Tigress's defiance is weakened and Po's is ignited. He takes on that weight for her.
Tumblr media
The way her head slowly falls back down makes me think she's too exhausted to keep her head up any longer. She had used all of her strength to hold onto Po and look fully at him, face to face, to be sure he was alright. Tigress is the most capable member of the group, but where her most important strength lies is revealed here as well as in the rest of KFP2: in her compassion and care for others.
Tumblr media
Po looks at Shen with scathing, genuine contempt. He's taken away too many people Po loves, and Po won't let him take away another. He's thinking about the valley, about his friends, Mr. Ping, and his duty to defend China and bring evil-doers to justice. We see the resolve in his eyes. He'll do what he has to.
The angle of the image is also worth mentioning. With the way the "camera" is tilted—now at a direct eye-level as opposed to a few shots before when Po was almost slouching below mid-frame—Po looks bigger in this shot. He's being framed as a protector. Defender of China. The Dragon Warrior. He's really, truly stepping into this role.
Tigress bows her head and Po takes on the weight, which is a huge contrast to the rest of the film. Before this scene, Tigress is the one being strong, being smart, taking charge, and leading the group. Throughout the mission, Po was consistently reckless, stubborn, and distracted. We know why. This bit is his amendment. This is him saying and meaning, "I've got this."
Tumblr media
And then he pushes Tigress away. The little look I caught in this screenshot lingers for only two~ seconds, but what I love about animation is that everything is intentional. He watches her float away for an extra few seconds because it meant something to someone that he did.
Tumblr media
AND THEN SHE REACHES FOR HIM. Whose idea was this? We need to have some words. You guys were evil and I love it.
She's exhausted, hurt, and is likely carrying the crushing weight of China's defeat on her shoulders, and yet, she reaches for him. It wouldn't even be for her own comfort, either, but because she still has the urge to save him. Even in her state of being borderline unconscious, she still has that instinct—that care. She can't watch her friend be killed.
Tumblr media
I pause on this whenever I watch this scene over. To me, this frame perfectly encapsulates Po as a character. We see him facing impending doom in the form of a massive ship with a monstrous-looking cannon strapped to the front, harboring a psychotic peacock fully intending to kill him—just like he killed Po's mother—when he gets the shot.
Despite this, Po only pushes Tigress—a loved one, and while it's far more impactful to the story that it was her, it could have been anyone and the point still stands—out of the way. He moves her out of the line of fire and lures the danger away. That simple action of pushing her away is the epitome of "show, don't tell" used correctly and tells the audience everything we need to know.
And then he goes and stands on a floating chunk of fallen ship (not even solid ground!) and fights solo against an entire fleet of weaponized ships. And then he wins in what's arguably the coolest, most badass way possible.
This—this frame, not the fight itself—is easily his most heroic and selfless moment and it's my favorite frame in the KFP trilogy.
Thanks to all who read this through for indulging my intense love for this specific sequence! This analysis isn't objective, obviously, so if there are any disagreements, I'd really like to talk about them! I'm always looking for different perspectives and ideas, and I'm sure there's a fan somewhere who interpreted this scene wildly differently. I'd also just really love to hear any additional thoughts if there's something I missed. And if another scene gets you super excited like this one does for me, tell me all about it!
An update for my readers: Chapter 6 of The Days is well on its way and I can't wait to share it with you—there's some fun stuff in there and I'm really excited to post it. Thanks for reading, guys! :)

Tumblr media
September 26, 1967.
The date emblazoned on your wrist felt like a cruel joke, a bitter reminder of a world that had crumbled around you. The small pulse of the glow on your wrist thrummed, a haunting echo of the past. September 26 was outbreak day. The day the end of the world had come crashing down, leaving chaos and devastation in its wake. The inked numbers throbbed on your skin, a constant reminder that your soulmate was out there, somewhere in this apocalyptic wasteland.
You traced the numbers on your wrist, the ink seeming darker today, wondering if you’d ever meet the person who was meant for you. What kind of person could they be? Were they strong, gentle, kind, or hardened by the harsh world?
Tumblr media
Hiding the mark from Joel for almost a decade took more than just care; it took an absolute miracle. You met Joel, Tess, and Tommy on your way to the Boston QZ. When you saw Joel’s wrist and the date there, you almost stopped breathing. Your birthdate on his skin was an unexpected blow. The ink on your wrist seemed to burn, yearning to connect with Joel. But his mark didn’t seem to react the same way.
When Joel and Tess started sleeping together, the walls between your apartments were paper-thin which seemed to amplify every intimate sound. You often found yourself wandering the hallways late at night, evading FEDRA officers, sitting on the rooftop, looking up at the empty night sky, stars twinkling, the moon bright. You wished for something good in a world gone bad.
You always wore long sleeves, even in unbearable heat. If you wore a short-sleeved shirt, you never took off your jacket, always coming up with some insane excuse about how cozy it was. It had become second nature, a routine you hardly thought about anymore.
As you kept your head down and worked, the grime and sweat accumulates on your skin. In exchange for your labor, you were given ration cards to obtain basic necessities.
"If it's so hot, why don't you just take off the damn jacket?" Joel gruffly asks, his irritation evident in his tone.
You stay silent and shrug, avoiding eye contact as you try to walk away to the next station, hoping to distance yourself from him. But he grabs your wrist, causing you to yank it away in surprise. "Joel, what the hell?"
Joel's tone is sharp and accusatory, causing you to instinctively flinch. "You're being awfully quiet," he scoffs.
You meet his eyes, trying to hide the turmoil inside. "What?"
"Something's off with you. What aren't you telling me?" Joel steps closer, invading your personal space, and you instinctively take a step back.
Panic sets in as you desperately search for a way out. You can't tell him the truth, so you grit your teeth and force out a lie. "I'm just tired."
"You're lying." Joel's words cut through you like a knife, making your heart race and palms sweat. The intensity of his gaze makes it clear that he won't let this go easily.
You try to remain composed, forcing a small smile. "I'm just tired from working all day."
Joel narrows his eyes, clearly not buying your excuse. "Bullshit," he says bluntly.
You bite your lip, feeling the weight of the lie in the pit of your stomach. "I promise, it's nothing."
Joel takes a step closer, making you back up against the wall. Your heart races as you feel trapped under his intense stare. "I know when something's bothering you," he says softly, his tone filled with concern.
You look down at your feet, unable to meet his gaze any longer. You've been hiding this secret for so long that the thought of telling anyone, especially Joel, terrifies you.
"Please," Joel pleads, his hand reaching out to gently touch your arm. "Just talk to me."
"I have to go," you urgently declare, heart pounding as you turn and bolt away, ignoring Joel's desperate calls for you to stop.
Your heart races as you run through the dark, narrow alleys, trying to put as much distance between you and Joel as possible. The fear and adrenaline pumping through your veins drive you forward, but at the same time, your mind is racing with thoughts of guilt for leaving Joel behind.
"Why did I have to lie?" you think to yourself. "Why couldn't I just tell him the truth?"
But deep down, you know why. You know that if you were to tell anyone about the secret burdening you, it could cost both of your lives. And as much as it pains you to not tell Joel, there is no other choice.
Tumblr media
The memories hit you like a tidal wave, pulling you back to that moment in time. But this time, it feels like you're watching from a distance, like a bystander in your own body.
"You can convince them. You always do." The words echo through your mind as Tess begs you and Joel for help. Tears stream down her face as she pleads, "You have to get her there. Keep her safe. Make things right." Joel shakes his head stubbornly, but Tess doesn't give up. "Please, Joel. Please say yes."
Everything feels surreal as you remember the infected pounding at the door, their screams like a constant reminder of what's at stake. And then Tess is gone, sacrificing herself with the rest of the infected to save the others.
Tess, your friend died that day.
But then everything shifts and you're in a different place, a house belonging to Bill and Frank. Ellie is reading a letter aloud, and you and Joel are there listening. "I used to hate the world," Ellie says, "but I was wrong. When I met my soulmate, there was one person worth saving. That’s why men like you and me are here. We have a job to do and God help any motherfuckers who stand in our way. I leave you all of my weapons and equipment. Use them to keep…”
You remember Joel storming out of the house with the letter, his grief and pain palpable in every movement he makes. It's a bitter taste in both of your mouths, but it's also a reminder of why you keep fighting – because there are people worth protecting and worth saving.
Joel may not even realize it, but you've been waiting for him your entire life. And the same goes for Joel.
The scene changes once more; the deafening sound of gunshots pierces your ears and suddenly you're back in the hospital. You're behind Joel, gripping a rifle tightly as you navigate through the chaos and bodies scattered throughout the halls.
Suddenly, you startle awake. Your heart races in your chest, and sweat trickles down your skin as you struggle to catch your breath.
You’re not out there. You’re in Jackson. You’re safe.
You briefly close your eyes, trying to shake off the lingering feelings of fear and loss from the dream. It had been two years since that fateful day in the hospital, and you were now living in Jackson with Joel and Ellie.
You gasped for breath and clutched your chest, trying to steady yourself with one hand on the softness of the sheets. You clambered out of bed and made your way to the bathroom, washing your hands and then your face. The cool water felt refreshing against your skin as you wiped it with a towel, trying to calm your nerves.
Taking a good look at yourself in the mirror, you saw the exhaustion written all over your face. The restlessness was evident in the dark circles under your eyes, and your hair was in a state of disarray.
"I look like I've been through hell," you muttered to yourself, sighing heavily.
You decided to take a shower, hoping it would help numb the pain. As the water cascaded over you, you let yourself sink into your thoughts, not really focusing on anything except the sound of water hitting your skin. Your bleary vision noticed the small cracks in the tiles on the wall.
Once you dried off and got dressed for the day, you headed downstairs to your small kitchen. The space had seen better days—cabinet doors hung slightly askew, and the pantry door refused to close all the way no matter how hard you tried.
You sighed, pushing the pantry door shut one more time before giving up and grabbing a mug from the chipped shelf. You poured yourself a cup of coffee, the bitter aroma filling the air as you took a tentative sip, savoring the warmth.
Later that morning, you stepped out of your little house in Jackson, pausing to take in the crisp air. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a soft golden light over the town. You noticed the creaky and loose steps of your porch under your feet, each step emitting a groan of protest. The railings wobbled as you gripped them for balance, making a mental note to add them to your growing list of things that needed fixing.
It was just about daybreak, the sun slowly peeking over the horizon, casting a golden glow. You stuffed your hands into the pockets of your jeans, the cozy sweater you wore providing some comfort as you made your way to the stables.
You were part of the barn support staff on rotation and consistently helped out in the greenhouse. Sometimes, you were out on patrol, but today was a barn day.
As you cleaned the barn and took care of the horses, you unconsciously rolled up your sleeves, figuring no one else would be up this early. You were alone in the stables, or so you thought.
Lifting a hand to wipe the sweat from your brow, you sighed. Suddenly, you heard the sound of something dropping and a familiar voice exclaiming, "Holy shit!"
You whipped your head around to the source of the sound and saw Ellie standing there, her eyes wide as she stared directly at your wrist.
"Fuck," you muttered under your breath, hastily pulling your sleeve down.
Ellie took a step closer, her curiosity piqued. "Is that... a soulmate mark?"
You avoided her gaze, feeling exposed. "It's nothing, Ellie. Just... don't worry about it."
"Nothing?!" She looked incredulous. "You’ve been hiding it all this time. Why didn't you tell me?"
You sighed, the weight of your secret feeling heavier than ever. "It's complicated, Ellie. Joel... Joel doesn't know."
Ellie’s eyes widened even more. "Joel? As in... Joel?"
You nodded, unable to find the right words. The truth was out now, and there was no going back.
Ellie moved into your space, her curiosity getting the better of her. Without warning, she grabbed your wrist, yanking it towards her. Her eyes zeroed in on the birthdate etched into your skin, her face a mix of shock and realization.
"September 26, 1967," she read aloud, her voice barely above a whisper. Her gaze snapped up to meet yours, eyes wide. "That's Joel's birthday."
You tried to pull your wrist back, but Ellie held on tight, her grip firm and unyielding. "Ellie, please," you started, your voice shaky.
"Dude," she cut you off, her tone urgent and insistent. "You need to fucking tell him."
You took a deep breath, trying to gather your thoughts. "Ellie, it's not that simple," you began, but she shook her head, not letting you finish.
"Not that simple?" she repeated, incredulous. "You've got his birthday on your wrist. You're soulmates! How much more complicated can it be?"
Your shoulders slumped as you finally managed to free your wrist from her grip. You rubbed the tender skin, feeling exposed and vulnerable. "You don't understand," you said softly. "Joel... he's been through so much. And so have I. Telling him now, after all these years... it might just make things worse."
Ellie's expression softened, but she didn't back down. "You think keeping it a secret is any better? He deserves to know. You both do."
You turned away, unable to meet her eyes. "Joel... he's moved on, he doesn’t want anything to do with relationships, and I don’t want to disrupt that."
Ellie snorted, crossing her arms. "Moved on? Joel’s not exactly the moving on type. He carries everything with him, all the time. You think he doesn't feel something for you?"
You glanced back at her, tears welling up in your eyes. "And what if he doesn't? What if he sees this and... and it means nothing to him?"
Ellie sighed, stepping closer and placing a hand on your shoulder. "You'll never know if you don't try. And trust me, he’s stronger than you think. You both are."
Her words hung heavy in the air, and for a moment, you just stood there, lost in thought. Finally, you nodded, a small, tentative movement. "I'll think about it," you whispered.
Ellie squeezed your shoulder gently before letting go. "Good. Because secrets have a way of coming out, one way or another. And it's better if it comes from you."
As she turned to leave, you stared down at the date on your wrist, the ink seeming to pulse with a life of its own.
Maybe Ellie was right. Maybe it was time to stop hiding.
Tumblr media
You sat alone on the bench in the food hall, picking at your meal and lost in your thoughts when a familiar drawl pulled you back to reality.
"Hey, darlin’."
The sound of Joel’s voice made your heart skip a beat, and a sudden warmth spread through your body. You nearly choked on your food, glancing up to see him settling next to you, a small smile playing on his lips.
“Hi, Joel,” you sputtered, trying to regain your composure.
Joel chuckled softly, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Didn’t mean to startle you. Mind if I join you?”
You shook your head, swallowing hard. “No, not at all.”
He leaned back, his shoulder brushing against yours, sending a jolt of electricity through you. “How’s your day been?”
You shrugged, trying to appear casual. “Busy, as always. Barn duties and all that.”
Joel nodded, his gaze lingering on your face. “Yeah, I hear you’ve been workin’ hard. Always see you runnin’ around, takin’ care of things.”
A soft blush crept up your cheeks under his scrutiny. “Just trying to keep busy, you know? What about you?”
“Same old,” he replied, his voice low and soothing. “Patrols, repairs, keepin’ an eye on Ellie. She’s a handful.”
You laughed, the sound easing some of the tension. “She definitely keeps us on our toes.”
Joel’s eyes softened as he watched you, and for a moment, the world seemed to fade away. The bustling noise of the food hall became a distant hum, leaving just the two of you in your own little bubble.
“You look tired,” he said gently, concern evident in his voice. “Everything alright?”
You hesitated, the weight of your secret pressing down on you. “Just… a lot on my mind lately.”
Joel reached out, his hand resting lightly on your arm. The touch was brief but sent a shiver down your spine. His eyes searched yours, concern evident. “You sure you’re alright?”
Your breath hitched at the back of your throat, but you forced a smile. “Mmm... yeah. Just going through a to-do list in my mind right now.”
Joel’s brow furrowed slightly, his gaze never leaving your face. “Anythin’ that needs fixin’, darlin’?”
You shrugged, trying to sound nonchalant. “Just a few kitchen cabinets... the hinges squeak, and the pantry door doesn’t close all the way. Also a couple of loose steps and a wobbly railing too.
He nodded, his lips curling into a small smile. “Well, why don’t I take a look? Might be an easy fix.”
Your heart fluttered at the offer, a mix of gratitude and the thrill of being near him. “You don’t have to, Joel. I know you’re busy.”
Joel chuckled softly, his hand lingering on your arm for a moment longer before he let go. “I’ve always got time for you. Besides, can’t have you fightin’ with those cabinets every day.”
You laughed, the tension easing slightly. “Alright, if you insist.”
Joel’s eyes twinkled with a warm light. “I’ll swing by tomorrow mornin’, if that’s alright with you.”
Your heart skipped a beat at the thought of spending more time with him. “Yeah, that sounds good. I’d appreciate the help.”
He gave a slow, easy smile that made your stomach flutter. “Great. I’ll bring my tools and we’ll get this place sorted.”
The way he said “we” filled you with a sense of comfort and belonging. “Thanks, Joel. It really means a lot.”
Joel stepped closer, his hand brushing against your arm in a way that sent a shiver down your spine. “Anytime, darlin’. You know I’m here for you.”
You nodded, feeling your cheeks heat up. “I know.”
His gaze held yours for a moment longer, the air thick with unspoken words and the electric tension between you. Finally, he took a step back, breaking the spell.
“I should get goin’,” he said, his voice a bit huskier than usual. “Gotta talk to Tommy ‘bout somethin’.”
“Right, of course,” you replied, feeling a pang of disappointment but also a thrill of anticipation for tomorrow.
Joel lingered by the table, a hand on your shoulder. “Take care, okay?”
“You too, Joel,” you said softly.
He nodded and turned to leave, but not before giving you one last, lingering look. You watched him walk away, your heart pounding and your mind racing with thoughts of what tomorrow might bring.
Tumblr media
The next morning, you were up at dawn, nerves and excitement thrumming through you as you tidied up the kitchen. Each movement was deliberate, an attempt to keep your mind occupied. But no matter how much you tried to focus, you couldn’t help but glance at the clock every few minutes, your heart racing each time the hands inched closer to Joel’s promised arrival.
As you finished your second cup of coffee, the knock on the door startled you, sending a jolt through your already frazzled nerves. You took a deep breath to steady yourself and opened the door to find Joel standing there, a toolbox in one hand and a warm, familiar smile on his face.
“Good mornin’,” he greeted, stepping inside, his presence filling the room.
“Morning, Joel,” you replied, the rush of warmth at seeing him making your voice tremble slightly.
He set the toolbox down and looked around the kitchen with a critical eye. “Alright, let’s see what we’re dealin’ with here.”
As Joel began inspecting the cabinets and pantry door, you couldn’t help but steal glances at him. Every subtle flex of his muscles under his shirt drew your attention, and you found it hard to look away.
“Found the problem,” he said, pulling you from your thoughts. “Just needs a little tightening and some oil.”
You nodded, trying to focus on his words rather than the magnetic pull of his proximity. “I’m glad it’s an easy fix.”
Joel smiled, his eyes locking with yours, sending a spark of electricity through you. “Told you it wouldn’t be a problem.”
As he worked, you found yourself drawn to him, moving closer under the pretense of handing him tools or holding a flashlight. Each accidental brush of your hands sent a jolt through you, the air between you charged with unspoken desire. You felt your pulse quicken every time his fingers grazed yours.
“There,” Joel said finally, standing up and testing the now-silent hinges. “Good as new.”
You smiled, genuinely grateful and a little breathless from being so close to him. “Thank you, Joel. You’re a lifesaver.”
He chuckled, wiping his hands on a rag. “Just doin’ what I can.”
You both stood there for a moment, the kitchen suddenly feeling too small and too big all at once. The silence between you was heavy with everything you weren’t saying, a tension that seemed to thicken the air.
“Joel,” you began, your voice trembling slightly. “I really appreciate this. More than you know.”
He looked at you, his expression softening in a way that made your heart ache. “I’m glad I could help. And I meant what I said yesterday—you don’t have to do everything alone.”
Your heart swelled at his words, and you took a tentative step closer, the distance between you feeling like an unbearable chasm. “It’s hard to ask for help sometimes. But knowing you’re here... it makes a difference.”
Joel reached out, his fingers lightly grazing your arm, sending a shiver down your spine. “I’ll always be here for you. Don’t ever doubt that.”
The intensity in his eyes made your breath catch. You felt drawn to him, the unspoken connection between you growing stronger with each passing moment. Without thinking, you closed the remaining distance between you, your heart pounding in your chest.
His breath hitched as you moved closer, the air between you charged with a heady mix of anticipation and yearning. You could see the conflict in his eyes, the struggle between holding back and giving in. The warmth of his body so close to yours was intoxicating, and you felt your resolve weakening with each passing second.
“Joel,” you whispered, your voice barely audible but filled with all the longing you’d kept hidden for so long.
He swallowed hard, his gaze never leaving yours. “I—”
Just as the air between you thickened with unspoken words, a sudden, sharp knock on the door interrupted the moment. You both turned to see a young woman standing there, her eyes lighting up when she saw Joel.
“Hey, Joel!” she called out, her tone annoyingly bright. “I heard you were here and thought I’d bring over some coffee. Figured you could use a break.”
Joel’s jaw tightened, and you could feel the tension radiating off him. “Uh, thanks, Vanessa,” he replied, his voice strained. “But we’re kinda in the middle of something.”
Vanessa’s eyes flicked to you, her gaze turning cold. “Oh, I see. Well, maybe I could help?”
Before you could step away, Joel’s arm snaked around your waist, pulling you close. The unexpected gesture sent a shiver through you, and you looked up at him, your heart pounding.
“We’re busy, Vanessa,” Joel said firmly, his hand resting possessively on your hip. “Thanks for the offer, but we’ve got it covered.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened in surprise and then narrowed in obvious jealousy. “Right. Well, if you change your mind...” She trailed off, her eyes lingering on you with a mixture of disdain and envy before she finally turned and walked away.
As soon as she was out of earshot, you let out a breath you hadn’t realized you were holding. Joel’s grip on your waist loosened, but he didn’t let go. His eyes met yours, the intensity in them making your pulse race.
“Sorry about that,” he murmured, his voice low. “Didn’t mean to make things awkward.”
You shook your head, a small smile playing on your lips. “It’s okay. I appreciate the backup.”
Joel chuckled softly, his thumb brushing against your side in a way that sent tingles down your spine. “Guess we should get back to work, huh?”
You nodded, reluctantly stepping back, though his touch lingered in your mind. “Yeah, the step and railing on the porch still need fixing.”
Together, you moved outside, the tension from earlier still simmering between you. As Joel inspected the loose step, you couldn’t help but steal glances at him. The way his hands moved with such confidence and skill, the way his brow furrowed in concentration—it all captivated you.
“Can you hold this steady for me?” he asked, his voice pulling you from your thoughts.
You nodded, stepping closer to help. Your hands brushed against his as you held the wood in place, and the contact sent a jolt through you. The proximity, the shared task, the quiet intimacy of the moment—it all felt like a dance, each movement charged with unspoken feelings.
“Almost got it,” Joel murmured, his breath warm against your skin. You could feel the heat radiating off him, and it took all your willpower not to lean into him.
Finally, he tightened the last screw and tested the step, making sure it was secure. “There. That should do it.”
You smiled, genuinely grateful and more than a little breathless. “Thank you, Joel. You’re a lifesaver.”
He looked at you, his eyes softening. “Just doin’ what I can.”
As you both stood there on the porch, the morning sun casting a golden glow around you, the world seemed to shrink until it was just the two of you. Everything you wanted to say but didn't wash over you in the awkward stillness, and the feelings you shared were nearly visible.
Tumblr media
The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows over the landscape as you and your patrol partner, Mark, scouted the perimeter. He was easy-going, always ready with a joke or a reassuring word. You found his presence comforting, a steady rock amidst the chaos.
“Think we’ll find anything today?” you asked, keeping your voice low.
Mark grinned, his eyes scanning the horizon. “Nah, it’s been quiet for a while now. Let’s hope it stays that way.”
Just as the words left his mouth, a shot rang out. The next few moments were a blur of chaos and violence. Raiders, hidden in the underbrush, launched their attack. Mark managed to shoot one off you, his quick reflexes saving your life. But then, he was hit, and you watched in horror as he crumpled to the ground.
“Mark!” you screamed, dropping to your knees beside him. Blood poured from a wound in his chest, and his breaths came in ragged gasps. You pressed your hands against the wound, desperately trying to stem the flow of blood. “Stay with me, Mark. Please, stay with me.”
But his eyes glazed over, the light fading. You choked back a sob, fury and grief surging through you as the raiders closed in. You fought with every ounce of strength you had, slashing and stabbing, your vision blurred by tears and the pouring rain that had begun to fall. Blood and dirt smeared your face, and pain lanced through your body from multiple wounds.
The storm roared with fury, whipping the trees and lashing the ground with torrents of rain. You stumbled through the churning chaos, your clothes drenched and clinging to your skin, your muscles burning from the effort of pushing forward. Your vision blurred by the onslaught, you fought to keep moving, each step a battle against the ferocious elements. In that moment, all that mattered was survival - staying alive until the tempest passed.

It had been hours since Joel last saw them. His graying hair was in danger of being pulled out in frustration. You and Mark were supposed to be back by now. The patrol route you both took was supposed to be a shorter one.
Joel paced back and forth in the settlement, struggling to contain his anger. “Why the hell can’t I go out there, Tommy? She’s my partner, my—” He cut himself off, frustration and fear etched into his features.
Tommy placed a hand on his shoulder, his voice firm. “You’re too close to this, Joel. You need to stay here. I’ll find her.”
Hours dragged by, each minute an eternity. Joel’s rage simmered, his helplessness gnawing at him. He punched the wall, his knuckles splitting, but the pain was nothing compared to the fear of losing you.
Tommy had taken a small team out to search for you and Mark, but there was still no word. The storm raged on, making it even harder to find any trace of you.
Joel’s mind raced with possibilities – had you and Mark been ambushed? Taken by the raiders? Injured and unable to make it back? His heart clenched at the thought of you hurt or worse.
He cursed himself for not going out with you both, for letting his emotions cloud his judgement. He knew better than anyone that in this world, you couldn’t afford to let your guard down. But he had let himself become complacent, too focused on protecting you rather than seeing things clearly.
Bile rises in Joel's throat, the taste of fear and worry leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. He swallows hard, trying to push the feeling down as he anxiously waits for any news.
The bitter taste of regret and fear lingered on Joel’s tongue, each thought of what could happen to you making his stomach turn.
The metallic taste of blood was thick on Joel's tongue as he bit down on his lip, trying to hold back his emotions. The rancid taste of fear and worry lingered in his mouth, coating his throat and making it hard to swallow.

Meanwhile, Tommy pushed through the storm, his eyes straining to pierce the darkness. The wind howled around him, carrying with it the distant echoes of thunder. He called out your name, his voice barely audible above the roar of the tempest. His heart pounded with a mixture of fear and determination, each step sinking into the mud as he trudged forward.
The rain came down in sheets, making it nearly impossible to see more than a few feet ahead. Lightning flashed, illuminating the twisted branches and slick ground for brief moments. He stumbled over fallen logs and through thick underbrush, the storm making every movement a struggle.
Tommy's eyes darted around, searching desperately. He felt a gnawing dread in the pit of his stomach, a fear that he was too late. Then, in the distance, he saw a figure lying still. His breath caught in his throat as he hurried over, praying that it wasn't you.
As he got closer, he recognized the bodies of the raiders, their lifeless forms sprawled across the muddy ground. The sight was gruesome, the aftermath of a brutal fight. His heart sank when he saw Mark, his friend and comrade, lying motionless with a fatal wound. He forced himself to look away, his focus now solely on finding you.
Finally, his eyes landed on you, crumpled and barely breathing. His heart pounded in his chest as he knelt beside you. Blood soaked your clothes, mingling with the dirt and rain, creating a grim tapestry that told the story of your fierce struggle.
“Hey, hey, it’s gonna be okay,” Tommy murmured, his voice trembling with urgency and concern. He gently lifted your head, cradling you in his arms. You stirred slightly, your eyelids fluttering open to reveal dazed, pain-filled eyes.
“Joel?” you whispered, your voice barely audible over the storm. The confusion and pain in your gaze made Tommy’s heart clench.
Tommy’s eyes widened as he saw the mark on your wrist, illuminated by a flash of lightning. It was the same date he had seen on Joel’s wrist—the same mark. Realization hit him like a freight train, the pieces falling into place with a sudden clarity. “It’s Tommy,” he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “I’ve got you. Just hold on.”
But you had already slipped back into unconsciousness, your body limp in his arms. Tommy’s heart raced as he gently but urgently lifted you, securing you on his horse. He mounted behind you, holding you close to keep you steady, and spurred the horse into a gallop.
The ride back was a blur of rain and darkness, each second stretching into an eternity. The storm seemed to rage even harder, the wind whipping through the trees and the rain stinging like needles. Tommy’s mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, fear for your life mingling with the shocking revelation of your connection to Joel.
By the time Tommy reached the settlement, his clothes were soaked through, clinging to his skin like a second, frigid layer. Every muscle in his body ached from the grueling ride and the weight of your unconscious form. The rain had not let up, and his vision was blurred by the relentless downpour. But he didn't stop, carrying you swiftly yet carefully towards the infirmary, each step a struggle against exhaustion and worry.
Joel was just by the large gate of Jackson, pacing anxiously. The moment he saw Tommy approaching with your limp body, his heart seemed to stop. His face, already drawn with worry, twisted into an expression of sheer desperation.
“Is she okay?” Joel asked frantically, his voice cracking. His eyes were wide, darting between Tommy and your pale face for any sign of hope.
“She’s alive,” Tommy said, his voice steady but laced with urgency. He handed you over to the medics who were rushing to meet them. Joel instinctively moved to follow, but Tommy grabbed his arm, his grip firm and unyielding.
“Joel, wait. Look at her wrist,” Tommy urged, his voice low but insistent.
Joel’s eyes followed Tommy's gaze, landing on the mark on your wrist. Recognition hit him like a punch to the gut, the date etched into your skin unmistakable. It was the same as his. Realization dawned with a mixture of awe and dread. “Fuck,” he breathed, the weight of it crashing over him. The one person he couldn’t afford to lose was you, and now he knew why.
The medics were quick, their movements efficient as they assessed your injuries and began to prepare you for treatment. They lifted you onto a stretcher, intent on rushing you inside where they could better tend to your wounds. Joel moved to follow, his protective instincts kicking in, but the medics tried to hold him back.
“Sir, you need to let us do our job,” one of them said, a young woman with a firm but gentle voice.
“No,” Joel growled, his eyes blazing with determination and fear. “I ain’t leavin’ her side.”
Tommy stepped in, trying to reason with him. “Joel, you gotta let the doctors work.”
Joel’s fists clenched at his sides, his whole body trembling with the effort to contain his emotions. “I can’t… I can’t lose her, Tommy,” he choked out, his voice raw with pain and anger.
“I know, but you stayin’ in there won’t help her. You’ll only be in the way,” Tommy said, his tone gentle but firm. He placed a reassuring hand on Joel’s shoulder, trying to ground him. “You’ve gotta trust them to do their job. Let them help her.”
Joel’s jaw tightened, his eyes locked on the door to the infirmary where they had taken you. Every fiber of his being screamed at him to be by your side, to make sure you were safe. But he knew Tommy was right. With a heavy, reluctant nod, he allowed himself to be led away, his heart aching with every step.
The minutes stretched into an eternity as they waited. Joel paced back and forth, his mind racing with worry. He could still see the image of you, broken and bloodied, every time he closed his eyes. The mark on your wrist haunted him, a constant reminder of the bond that tied you together. He knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that he couldn't bear to lose you.
Tommy stood by, watching his brother with a mixture of sympathy and concern. He knew how much you meant to Joel, and the revelation of the soulmate mark only intensified that bond. He wished there was something more he could do, some way to ease Joel’s pain.
Finally, a medic emerged from the infirmary, her expression tired but relieved. “She’s stable,” she announced, and Joel felt a weight lift off his shoulders. “She’s got a long road to recovery, but she’s a fighter.”
Joel nodded, his eyes filled with gratitude and determination. “Thank you,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. He would stay by your side, no matter what. The bond you shared was too precious to ever let go.

Days blurred into a haze of sterile white walls and the rhythmic beeping of machines. You drifted in and out of consciousness, each time greeted by the comforting sounds of Joel and Ellie. Joel's low, soothing voice often filled the room, whether he was talking to you or humming a soft tune. Ellie would sit by your bed, recounting stories with her usual animated flair, her voice a bright spot in the darkness.
One evening, as the storm outside mirrored the chaos within, you stirred slightly. The weight of Joel's hand on your wrist was a grounding force, his presence unwavering. He looked exhausted, his eyes heavy with worry, but he never left your side.
In one of your more lucid moments, you caught snippets of Joel's soft singing, the melody wrapping around you like a warm blanket. His voice was a balm, a tether to the world you were trying so hard to rejoin. He would often lean down to press gentle kisses to your forehead, his touch both a promise and a plea for you to come back to him.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, you awoke fully. Your throat was dry, and every muscle ached, but you were aware. The weight on your wrist brought your gaze to Joel. He was slumped in a chair beside your bed, his head resting on the edge, fast asleep. He looked worn out, dark circles under his eyes and a shadow of stubble on his jaw.
“You’re awake,” he murmured, his eyes fluttering open as if sensing your gaze.
“I...” Your voice came out as a croak, and you winced.
“Here, drink up,” Joel said, quickly pouring a glass of water and holding it to your lips. You drank greedily, the cool liquid soothing your parched throat.
After a few sips of water, you managed to find your voice again. “How long have I been out?” you asked, your throat feeling slightly raw from disuse.
“Almost a week,” Joel replied, his eyes never leaving yours.
“A week?” you repeated in shock. It felt like only a few hours had passed.
Joel nodded, his hand gently caressing your cheek. “You were pretty out of it for a while there.”
You felt a pang of guilt for causing so much worry and trouble for everyone. “I’m sorry,” you said softly.
“Don’t be sorry,” Joel said firmly, his eyes filled with intensity. “Just focus on getting better.”
“I will,” you promised, grateful for his unwavering support.
The relief on Joel’s face was palpable, but as he set the glass aside, a flicker of anger flashed in his eyes. “Were you ever going to tell me?” His voice was quiet, but the intensity of his gaze was almost too much to bear.
You looked away, shame burning your cheeks. “Trust me, I know. It's always about me.”
Joel's jaw clenched. “I just… I didn’t think you could ever want me.” Your voice broke, the years of hiding and pretending catching up to you.
Joel’s expression softened, and he took a step closer, his hand reaching out to touch your cheek. “You’ve always been more than I deserve,” he murmured. “I just wish you’d told me.”
Tears filled your eyes, and you struggled to breathe. “I love you…” you choked out, the words finally escaping your lips after years of being held back. “I’m sorry.”
Joel pulled you into his arms, holding you close as you sobbed. “I love you too,” he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. “We’ll get through this. Together.”
In the midst of life's storms, a quiet calm settled around you both, like discovering an oasis in the desert. Amidst chaos and pain, you found your soulmate, and love emerged as the unwavering light guiding you through the darkest nights.

Synopsis: You didn’t foresee this, Ralak kept you in the dark for the sake of you and your baby’s safety. But now the time has come, it’s all too overwhelming for you to process.
<- Previous-> Next
Ralak never shared more than he needed to when it came to his duties with Tonowari. No matter how much you vowed to keep it confidential. He’s a man of few words, but when it came to his business he kept them fewer.
As much as you knew, his trips inland consisted of hunting and gathering bigger game that most warriors struggled to handle.
There's a few times you can count on one hand that he's come home a little more worn down. Each time you cursed Tonowari under your breath as you helped your mate unwind. You’d insist on knowing what the olo’eyktan had him doing to be so spent and why he had not entirely fulfilled his promise to lighten Ralak of his duties since the mating.
Ralak would be quick to shut you down in the most gentle way despite feeling irritable and sombre. It was always something along the lines of, ‘it keeps you safe, and that is my duty’, and that he’ll ‘discuss it when the time comes’.
It seems the time has come.
Another gloomy night, rain and thunder tear through the sky. These storms are more frequent in this season, as it’s Ewyas way of keeping the balance with the freshwater and seawater ratio for the mangroves.
But tonight it’s torrential. You’re in full bloom, ready to step into your new chapter of motherhood at any moment. The babe sits low in your womb and you’re swollen from what feels like head to toe. The rain isn’t helping with the soreness in your joints.
Ralak is seated next to the crackling firepit, stirring the bubbling stew with one hand and mindlessly rubbing your swollen ankles with the other. Meanwhile you lay snuggled in bed, wrapped comfortably in the thick shawl as you listen to the pitter-patter. It’s peaceful, despite the dull ache in your lower back. Maybe the rain isn’t so bad, after all.
Ta-toom!
The low-pitched sound of the war horn has Ralak's full attention, shredding him of whatever serenity he had in his being. Moving hastily, he stands and darts over to the marui door, slipping into his gear and fixing his largest spear on his back.
The scene unfolding before your eyes is a rare one. You’d only seen him in full gear on the day you first laid eyes on him. The day you arrived here in Awa’atlu. And it brings a sinking feeling to your stomach.
“Ralak… what was that?” You ask nervously.
You watch him aggressively tighten the strap of his tstalsena [knife sheathe; carrier] and chuck a bucket of water in the fire—killing the flame. A precautionary measure. He knows the time has come. He hears your voice but he also hears Tonowari's...
'When the horn sounds… you come. And that…is an order.'
In his head, he’s going through an array of possible responses but there’s simply no time for any of them. Using the frame of the bed to pull yourself up, you slowly come to your feet and waddle towards him.
“Ralak. What is going on?” You ask a little louder, a hand gripping his wrist.
Turning to face you, his hands fly to support your stomach as he looks you deeply in the eyes. Then he kisses you with purpose. Pressing his lips into yours like it would be the last time, forcing himself to pull away to briefly glance down at his unborn.
It catches you by surprise, leaving you looking up at him open mouthed. Now you’re really scared. It feels like he’s being plucked away from your fingers and there’s nothing you can do about it. “Ralak—”
“I will explain when I am back. All of it.” He already sounds out of breath, fixing the shawl over your shoulders. “You stay here. Stay warm. Do not leave. Do not answer to anyone. Understand?”
Your forehead wrinkles as you try to process this all.
Don’t answer to anyone? To whom? Why did he put out the fire? Why is he in full gear? What the fuck is going on right now? He said he’d be back…right?
“Y/n.” He booms your name, yet his tone remains steady and calm. “Understand?”
You nod hurriedly, “Yes. Yes.”
“I will be back soon.” He fixes your shawl a last time before stepping back and bolting through the door.
You follow behind him, keeping the marui flap open to watch him click for his skimwing. He makes the bond and mounts the beast hastily, and is airborne soaring towards the mainland at full tilt.
Befuddled, you waddle back inside, your back slamming into the marui stilt as you huff and puff to catch your breath. You nervously check the stew, and see that it’s almost done. The glowing charcoal should be enough to finish it off, so you opt to leave it covered and fidget with the prrsmung [baby carrier] you've weaving for the past couple days.
Anything to keep you busy.
——
Ralak effortlessly dismounts his tsurak, letting it glide past him in the water as he climbs up to the communal pod. This is a gathering place for important meetings and announcements to the clan. He watches as others assemble under the larger, woven marui, drenched with the water of the sea and sky. It’s clear that this was a signal for the warriors of the clan, from the elite, to the former. The young and the old.
Even Zu’té is present, standing lone far off in the corner.
War horn in hand, the olo’eyktan makes his presence known as he stands on the highest part of the pod. His mate, the tsahìk, stands next to him with her chest high and their children next to her.
Jake and Neytiri, along with Lo’ak and Neteyam, group together behind them at the back of the pod, observing the unfolding scene. The warriors begin to chant, defensively positioned with their tongues on display. They’re all armed and ready to protect their own from whatever the impending threat is. Ralak takes his place next to Tonowari, standing tall and still. He observes the uproar before him, his mask of indifference fixed tightly to his face.
“Mawey. Mawey. [Calm. Calm.]” Ronal speaks loudly over the heavy rain, hands splayed out in front of her.
But it makes no difference.
The uproar is growing even louder than the downpour. It was rare to hear this particular horn. It’s been years, ten, to be exact. And those who know exactly what it means are up in arms. Ralak knew this day would soon come, but he was hoping to Eywa that it would be after the birth of his son. Tonowari lets loose a throaty ‘gwah’, driving the butt of his spear into the ground. The crowd hushes down into a dead silence, acknowledging their leader.
“Warriors of Awa’atlu. I summon you for good reason. Ten years have passed and it is time to meet with the ash people once more.” Tonowari begins, only for the younger warriors to mumble among themselves, some of who are unaware of who the ash people are.
“Tìfnu! [silence!]” Ralak snaps through his teeth, “…the olo’eyktan speaks.” Tonowari nods to Ralak.
“The treaty has ended. We meet with them far inland to discuss the terms of a new treaty.” Tonowari’s eyes bounce among the sea of na’vi. “It will be no easy or short journey. We must make the trek by foot. Tonight.”
A few male na’vi are unable to keep their excitement to a minimum and siren a few calls, smacking their strakes together. Neytiri snakes her arm around Jake's upper bicep, tucked under his wing. Neteyam and Lo’ak listen intently, their heads tilted down as they grip their bows firmly.
“Not all will come. I have chosen a few to be at my side.” Tonowari glances at Ralak, and then the Sullys before continuing, “The rest must stay and protect the clan if needed.”
Ronal interjects, speaking of the ash na’vi and their horrid way of living—from their occasionally cannibalistic diet to their view of Eywa and the balance. She further reminds the people of the treaty, and that its tenets include immunity from their ‘hunting practices’ in exchange for a resource only attainable on the reef. The treaty is valid for a decade and then the terms are subject to negotiation based on the two tribe’s needs. She commences it by announcing the names of those who have been chosen by Tonowari.
“I need you by my side, Ralak.”
It was a direct order, and Ralak knows that. He knows that no matter what he says, the olo’eyktan’s order must be obeyed. But it doesn’t mean he won’t try.
“She is due any day now. You know that.” Ralak speaks crystal clear, stating exactly what his concerns are.
He doesn’t want to leave you alone, especially so heavy and full with his firstborn, who will come at any moment. Every bone in his body is telling him it’s the wrong move. But Tonowari glances at his own wife who is swollen with his fourth child.
“I know. I know, Tak. But we must do what we need. For the people.”
Ralak holds a stare with his superior—his father figure. He’s gritting his teeth to keep himself together, to keep his composure. To keep his thoughts just as his thoughts. The two communicate through facial expressions, and a quick tilt to Tonowari’s head has Ralak looking away in frustration.
It’s final.
“No.” Jake butts in, sharp and quick with his disapproval. “He gave me his word.”
Alas, a moment where father and son in law are in favour of the same thing.
“You have the sky people and we have the ash people. They demand his (Ralak’s) presence. If we fail in this, we will be at war. He comes with us.” Tonowari is stern with his tone, leaving no room for an argument.
“Ma’ Jake.” Neytiri chimes in, fright evident in her voice. She is tired of the war.
As a last resort, Ralak’s gaze shifts over to Zu’té. He knew Zu’té would also be chosen despite his...'retirement'. He was undoubtedly one of the best warriors the clan has ever had, wielding great strength and skill. Zu’té returns the stare, crossing his arms over his chest as he cocks a brow. Their brothership had strengthened after Ralak sought help.
Jake notices this, and shakes his head with his hands on his hips. “Nope. No. Who is that guy anyways?”
“My brother.”
“His brother.”
The two taller na’vi speak at once.
“Since when do you have a—You know what? I don’t care. Okay? You? I trust. Him? Not so much. I’d rather my boys stay with her.” Jake says sternly, glancing at Zu’té. “No offence, bud.”
“Good thing I care not for your opinion, koaktan [old man].”
“Zu’té.” Ralak whispers harshly, throwing a glare at his sibling.
“Look, if you got a problem—”
“What about tuk?” Neytiri cuts her mate short, tugging at his arm to remind him of who is watching their youngest daughter.
“Then they take turns or somethin’, I’m not havin’ one baby girl watched and not the other.”
“Toruk makto.” Tonowari lays a heavy hand on the former olo’eyktan's shoulder, drawing him away to break the tension. “They cannot step foot on our land with the treaty. She will be safe. Trust me…” Their voices drown out from the pounding downpour.
As they go back and forth, Ralak begins to process what Tonowari said.
‘They demand his presence’.
Tonowari had made this meeting the topic of conversation over the past few weeks, preparing him for this. But he never mentioned anything about them demanding his attendance in particular. The last meeting with the ash people happened when Ralak was a very young warrior, long before his iknimaya.
Back then, Tonowari had a different warrior at his side—a different right hand. She was strong and well known for being patient with her students. It was a frequent story at family dinner when Tonowari and Ronal took Ralak under their wing. And as Ralak became Tonowari's right hand man, he was thrusted into enforcing the tenets of the treaty, going inland with Tonowari to uphold the clan's part.
Ralak has only caught a glimpse of them once after delivering the resource to the agreed spot. He had just started these excursions with Tonowari, and his curiosity got the best of him. He looked behind him for just a moment, and caught the sight of a curvy, grey woman hastily gathering and stuffing everything into a satchel of some sort.
Her stripes were a deep, ashy blue, and her skin seemed almost scale-like. She was rid of any bioluminescence, as if the light within her was gone, and her hair was matted with what looked like burgundy clay. Tonowari then seized the back of Ralak’s neck and shoved him along, advising that he never looks.
“It is decided. Neteyam, Lo’ak and Zu’té stay.” Tonowari announces as he and Jake rejoin the group, looking at those who are left—Tonowari, Neytiri and Ralak. “We leave soon, make your arrangements.”
Ralak knew his last few words were directed to him. With that, Ralak strides towards Zu’té. “I know what I am asking of you, Zu’té—”
“I will do this for you.” Zu’té turns to face Ralak, who’s undeniably uneasy and concerned.
“Protect her.”
“You protect her. Get in and get out of there, baby brother.” Zu’té speaks, extending his hand out to Ralak. Ralak nods firmly. He’s right, your safety, along with the rest of the clan’s, depends on how this all plays out.
“Oe irayo si ngaru [I give thanks to you].” Ralak's hand meets Zu’té’s forearm with a smack. They tug back and forth a bit, silently wishing each other luck on their own endeavours before setting off on their skimwings.
They arrive, walking with haste along the beach towards the stairs to Ralak’s marui pod in the pouring rain.
“That’s...interesting.” Zu’té makes a comment about the railings for the stairs.
“She has a hard time without it.” Ralak responds, stopping at the bottom step, coming to the quick realisation that this man will essentially be replacing him for the next few eclipses. “She may need help using them.”
Zu’té nods, understanding what he really means. “Do not fret, brother. I will take care of your mate.”
Ralak releases a shaky breath as they make their way to the patio, finding shelter from the rain.
“Wait here.” Ralak speaks with his back turned, “I must speak with her first.”
——
A torturous hour has passed, and you’ve burned circles into your marui floor from pacing so much. He’s taking longer than you’d expected, and worry is really starting to set in now.
What’s going on? What did that sound mean? Why did he leave in such a rush? With all his gear, too?
You gnaw at the calloused piece of skin on your thumb, keeping a warm comforting hand on your bump to keep your kicking babe calm. Regardless, he continues doing somersaults in your womb.
Fuck it.
You rush towards the marui door where your gear hangs, and fight with the strap of your chest piece to slip it on you. It won’t fasten and it’s simply too tight to fit your body right now, but you continue to grapple with the stupid strap with shaky hands.
“Tanhì.” Ralak’s voice is rough and he sounds winded. “What are you doing?” He rushes over to you and quickly removes the piece off your chest.
“Ralak—oh, thank Eywa.” Your voice is shaky, but thick with relief. “I’m sorry, I just got s-so worried.”
“We must speak. Time is going.” Ralak carefully ushers you over to the bed, and assists you in sitting down, holding your swollen belly along the way. He takes note of his active child, feeling his little kicks and pokes. He comforts his young with a few strokes to your stomach. “Shh-shh, little one. Alright.”
He knows this whole ordeal must be stressing you both, and he’s really regretting not telling you all of this sooner.
“What do you mean?” You ask, urgency thick in your voice.
Ralaks demeanour is nothing short of solemn, tensed jaw and tightened lips. It seems serious, and this man is no person to jest on such matters.
"Ralak...What is happening?"
He takes a moment to reply, his gaze fixed on his hand that still lays firmly on your stomach. He then looks up at you, concern etched into his features. “It is time to speak about… my duties with Tonowari.”
You feel your heart thud against your ribcage, your eyes widen at the words. You’ve been eager to know, but now that he’s telling you, it implies that everything isn’t alright. It implies… the safety of your unborn is compromised. You nod slowly, trying to remain calm for the sake of your son.
“We reef people hold a peace treaty with another clan…” the giant begins, slipping his hand from your stomach to clasp yours tightly. “…the ash people.”
“Ash people?” Your voice is less than a whisper, tiny and croaky.
“They are a horrible people, tanhì. Truly wicked. Kawnglan [malicious; bad hearted]. Much like the sky people.” He shakes his head as he mutters the words, not even wanting to go into any more detail. He didn’t want to taint your innocence. To stress your mind. Especially now that you’re heavy with his child. “The treaty keeps them off this land. It keeps you safe.”
“Kawnglan [malicious; bad hearted].” You repeat through a gasp.
“To them, Eywa is nothing. Tsaheylu [the bond] is for control. Their diet…” Ralak catches himself, bringing his words to a halt.
“Their diet…?” Your bottom lip trembles.
Ralak just shakes his head, taking your other hand with his. “The treaty will soon end. I must go. Tonight.”
“What?!” You shout, wrenching your hands from his grasp to quickly stand up. A shooting pain sears up the side of your stomach, and your hand flies to clutch it. Ralak rushes to steady you.
“Careful, y/n.” He snaps, high strung and tense. “I will be back in a few eclipses.”
“What? No! No, no. It’s too dangerous.” You protest, gripping his wrists to stay standing.
“It is the olo’eyktan’s orders. I must.” He’s quick to respond to you.
This quietens you. Does Tonowari not know that you’re due any day? Or perhaps he doesn’t care. How could he rip your mate away from you at this time? Especially for something so…risky. You feel your fear bubble into something more hot.
Anger.
“Then I’m coming.” You announce, dropping your hands from his wrists to waddle over to your gear once more. Ralak stands in front of you, hands on your stomach to stop you.
“No. You're staying here.” Ralak orders sternly, backing you up to sit back on the bed.
“No. I’m coming. I’m safer with you.” You resist his pushes, trying to stand firm.
“You are heavy with child.” He grits his teeth, giving you another light push, “I cannot protect you there. You—agh—you are safer here.”
Ralak makes the confession, feeling like he’s failing at his duty as your mate. He shouldn’t even be leaving you, not when you're this far along. He should be by your side, tending to your every need.
“What? By myself? What if—what if something happens? What if the baby—” You’re cut short by the sound of Zu’té’s not-so-reserved entrance. He yanks the marui flap to the side, ducking under it and standing tall behind Ralak, by just a couple inches. He, too, is fully equipped with his gear and weapons.
“Brother. I can hear the war party.” Zu’té speaks with haste, keeping his eyes locked onto Ralak.
'Brother?' Your eyes snap back to Ralak, beady and full of tears. “You didn’t.”
It quickly dawns on you that Ralak had planned this out. Made these arrangements in anticipation things went south and he had no say in the matter. To ensure your safety, and the safety of your unborn by going to the greatest length of rekindling a flame that had been extinct for twelve years. Ralak has spoken casually of his brother before, but never in any great detail.
“Y/n. This is Zu’té, my brother. He will keep you safe.” Ralak speaks with shame in his voice, knowing this must be way too overwhelming for you. He hadn’t planned for it to go like this.
Zu’té finally allows his eyes to wander over to you. They widen when they get their first proper look of you, darting all over your body to take in your foreign features.
He caught a glimpse when your family first arrived in Awa’atlu, but never this close. His eyes land on your bulging stomach, lingering a second too long to make even himself a bit uncomfortable. He clears his throat and looks back at Ralak.
You look at Zu’té with anger in your eyes, and then back at Ralak as they begin to swell with hot tears. Zu’té tries to make himself smaller, feeling the thickness of the air now. He backs up into the marui flap, tempted to lift it and walk himself outside to relieve some of the pressure.
“How long did you say this would be f-for? What if I go into labour? Will you really allow another man to deliver our son?”
Zu’té quickly but silently excuses himself from the room, taking a spot on the patio with his arms crossed over his chest, pinching the bridge of his nose. ‘Oh, Toto. What have you gotten yourself into?’
Angry, you shot the words like an arrow and they pierced your mate’s chest with ease. He grimaces, as if he were actually in pain.
“I-I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I—” You sob the apology, burying your hot face into your hands.
Ralak embraces you, wrapping his large arms around your body, hugging you close and tight. He sways a little with you, humming deep in his chest. “‘ts alright. You’re okay. Take a breath. I know this is frightening.”
He understands—it is not uncommon for a navi pair to remain close during the final weeks of pregnancy. It’s an unconscious mechanism, keeping them together for the birth of their offspring. Ralak feels it just as much as you but in order to truly protect you he must go— another thing that he understands.
“You c-come back to me, o-okay?” Your breath won’t stop hitching. “Come as s-soon as y-you can.”
“I will, I will. ” He coos, pulling back enough to look down at you. “Mawey, tanhì. Strong heart. For our baby.”
You nod, lifting your head to look up at him. He sees the terror in your eyes and his heart breaks with guilt. He gently presses his forehead against yours, slowly stroking your back.
“Nga yawne lu oer, nga yawne lu oer. [I love you, I love you]” He whispers longingly as he closes the distance between your mouths.
“Nga yawne lu oer [I love you]. S-So much.” You sputter, lips trembling against his.
He kisses you with force, pressing his lips into yours until it almost hurts. You both linger there, not wanting to part ways. But you feel him pulling away, knowing there wasn’t much time left. Instinctively, cling onto him when his lips leave yours.
“Please don’t go.” You mumble into his chest, knowing that he has no choice.
“I have to, my tanhì.” He mutters as he begins to pull away before letting go completely.
You follow behind him, thumb in your mouth as you nibble at the skin, hand resting on top of your bump. You watch him call for his tsurak for a second time tonight, and look back at you for a moment. He takes in the sight of you standing next to his older brother, trying to find comfort in knowing that you’re in safe hands. Ralak gives him a nod and mounts the beast, taking off towards the war party.
Leaving you in the presence of Zu’té.
“Y/n, is it?” Zu’té asks, already knowing the answer.
It’s awkward and he doesn’t do well in these types of situations. He knows comfort is what you need right now, considering you’re now sobbing into your hands again. You’re worried sick. Literally. It’s all making you feel woozy and lightheaded.
“Listen...” He goes to rest a hand on your upper back, but he hesitates, leaving his hand to hover. He retracts it completely, allowing it to fall back to his side. He sighs, droopy ears and tensed brows. “He will return soon.”
Among all the emotions that cloud you at once, anger still remains roaring at the forefront. You find yourself turning your heel and ignoring his presence, waddling away as fast as your swollen feet will allow it.
“Leave m-me be.” You spit between hitched breaths, ensuring the flap of the marui door shuts harshly behind you.
Despite feeling sympathy for you, Zu’té stands outside, finding solace in being alone. He chooses the driest spot, and sets himself up on the patio, getting ready for the stormy night ahead.
You waddle in to bed, wrapping yourself in the thick shawl that smells like your mate, and lay next to the prrsmung [baby carrier] you still have yet to finish. Feeling defeated and empty, you lay on your side in bed as you process everything, letting silent tears crash onto your bed.
——
You’re not entirely sure at what point in the night that you drifted to sleep, but you wake up in a groggy state. Dried tears make it hard to open your eyes, and your hair sticks to your face. You look around in a daze and realise that it’s still dark outside.
The pang in your bladder keeps you awake and forces you out of bed, making you wobble to the curtain. You pull it back and are met with the sight of Zu’té sleeping propped up against the marui wall with his spear tucked to his chest.
Seeing him painfully reminds you of the heart wrenching events of last night. That even though you were hoping and praying to Eywa for it all to be a bad dream—it was all very real.
An icy cold breeze gusts by, making you shiver under your shawl and Zu’té shift in his sleep. The rain had eased off into a light, continuous drizzle some time during the night.
Your ears droop with guilt for leaving him out here in the cold, damp night. You let out a sigh and grip the railing to the marui stairs, turning your body sideways to take your first step down. The wood squeaks when it takes your weight, Ralaks usual tell tale sign that you’re sneaking out at night without his help.
It seems to work for Zu’té too because by the time you reach the second step you hear a raspy voice.
“I was told you need help with these.” Zu’té offers his hand. You let out a sigh and take his arm.
You’ll admit, his helping hand is actually helping, especially now that you’re so far along.
“Irayo [thank you].” You mutter, holding on tightly as you make your way to the bottom step. Zu’té leans against the railing, waiting for you to finish your business.
You don’t take long, most trips recently have been false alarms—just the baby pushing on your bladder because he’s so low down. As you make your way back to the stairs, your lower back begins to warm up. It radiates to your upper and inner thighs, making them ache as you walk.
It’s nothing new, aches and pains are becoming more frequent as the days pass, and the cold certainly isn’t helping. Zu’té meets you at the bottom step with an extended elbow, and you take his arm without a second thought.
It starts to rain again, hard. The temperature easily falls by a few degrees and all you want is to be inside the warmth of your bed right now. Your feet move at a quicker pace and as much as Zu’té tries to be gentle as he can, his grip tightens.
“Take your time.” He says, keeping you steady as you reach the top step.
Once you get to the door, he immediately lets go of you, stepping aside to take his spot on the patio for the remainder of the night. You pull back the marui flap but find yourself hesitating to step inside. You look over your shoulder, watching Zu’té tuck his spear close to his chest and prop himself against the wall.
“Zu’té.” You say. He looks at you, brows raised as he listens. “It’s cold out here. You should come—”
“Don’t worry about me.” He cuts you short, closing his eyes.
“I’m not.” Your words are quick and almost defensive.
Zu’té chuckles a bit, if you could even call it that. “Sounds like you are.”
You sigh, getting a little irritated. “Whatever.”
“I’ll be alright out here.” He says nonchalantly, opening his eyes to look directly at you. Your heart skips a beat and you feel the blood drain from your face. You thought Ralak was intimidating, but this guy is something else.
“Sure.” It’s awkward, but a good awkward…if that were a thing. “Night.”
“Wake me if you need me. No more sneaky shit.” He’s muttering now, ready to go back to sleep. “And get some rest.”
You hold back your laugh, a little amused by the stark difference in his personality and Ralaks. How are they brothers? Or related, even?
“Will do, sir.” You match his sarcastic tone, entering the marui and laying down in bed, hoping to Eywa that sleep will find you soon.
——
Village life continues despite Ralak and the others' absence. You wake up earlier than usual, despite the exhausting circumstances. Your baby moves, letting you know he’s awake too.
“Daddy will be home soon.” You reassure your babe, gently rubbing your stomach.
Perhaps you were also reassuring yourself.
You feel empty, and numb. And as much as you want to lay in bed all day and wait for your mates return, you still have a few things left to do before your son’s arrival.
First thing being, getting some food in your system.
You get ready, and walk outside, noticing that Zu’té is no longer in his spot.
He wakes early.
Looking out into the distance, you catch sight of Zu’té crouching next to a small flame, cooking what seems to be squid. It’s hard to be sure of what it is—the sun hasn’t fully bloomed, and though the rain has stopped it’s still a bit gloomy. You make your way over to him, taking extra care when going down the stairs.
“Morning.” You say nonchalantly.
Zu’té’s ears spring up and he looks behind him—behind you—directly at the stairs. His brows lower and he sighs quickly, knowing there’s no point in making the comment. He looks back at his task, turning the slightly charred squid impaled by a sharpened branch.
“You’re up early.” The giant states, back turned to you to reveal his insanely intricate tattoo.
“Same to you.” You respond, staring at his back hard enough to burn holes into it. You see some scarring and thickened skin, presumably from his days as a warrior. That much you knew because of Ralak.
“Squid. Help yourself.” Zu’té says, handing you a stick of burnt squid.
Taking it from him, you hold it in front of your face, a little baffled at how he seemingly saw nothing wrong with it.
“Hm…thanks. Looks…well done.” You try to force a smile, to no avail.
You try to take a seat next to him, struggling to keep your balance as you lower yourself to your knees. His ears lay flat and he instinctively springs to his feet, helping you sit down. He didn’t think you’d join him here.
It’s silent. Uncomfortably silent. And awkward. You keep your extremities close and your tail closer, curled up in on yourself to remain as small as you can. Although, in comparison to your mate's brother, you were tiny.
He’s not taller by much, but still taller nonetheless. It really makes you wonder how their parents looked for them to turn out this way.
Zu’té eats hastily, shovelling the squid in his mouth as if it had the ability to slither away. It makes you look back at your own serving and suddenly your nerves go haywire. You didn’t want to risk getting sick, your bedside bucket is too far away to fetch. But you didn’t want to be rude—he’d obviously woken up early to make this for you.
You take an experimental bite and fight for your life to keep a straight face. You exaggerate a nod and cover your mouth with your hand, hiding the way you're smacking away at this blubbery piece of meat.
“Mm. Mhm.” You grunt, forcing it down and clearing your throat. “It’s—uhm, it’s not—”
“I am no ‘emyu [cooker].” He says, chucking his cleared stick into the fire.
“Ahem—yeah. Yup.” You twirl the stick between your pointer finger and thumb, bringing his attention to your five fingered hand. His eyes widen a bit before quickly looking away, and you tuck them back in between your thighs.
“Thanks for breakfast.”
“Sleep well?”
You both speak at the same time, unintentionally clearing the tension in the air.
“I suppose, all things considered.” You try to speak lightheartedly. “And you? Did any part of you freeze?”
Zu’té laughs and shakes his head. “No, not quite.”
“Well, that’s good.” You say, looking out at sea to witness the sun's emergence. It casts an orange hue over the water, illuminating the ripples of the oncoming waves.
He’s watching it too.
“Your tattoo.” You speak softly, witnessing his ears flutter. “…on your back.”
“Ah. What of it?”
“What does it mean? I mean—” You stutter, still adapting to the idea of inking being a symbolic statement. “What’s the story behind that?”
The story replays in his head—the death of the spirit brothers and family. It flashes before him, as if he were in that moment again. The guilt and pain inside him is eternal, something that’s never left him since. He’s never spoken of it, not even to the person he hurt the most through it all—Ralak.
His ears pin back and his jaw tightens. He shrugs his shoulders and mutters, “Felt like it.”
“So…you’re telling me you did that, for fun?” The surprise is evident in your voice as you look at the tattoo again. His skin is raised and it spans the entirety of his upper back. “That must have been really painful. Ralak did mine and it took days.”
“Didn’t hurt.” Zu’té says, turning his body to you yet keeping his eyes on the sun. But it did. It hurt—a lot. Self inflicted pain, to symbolise the pain he inflicted on others, even if it weren’t his intention.
Maybe they are brothers. You think.
“You going to eat that?” He asks, interrupting your train of thought, pointing at your squid on a stick.
“Uhh—I’m going to pass.” You answer, offering it to him, “…sorry.”
“Again. Not a ‘emyu [cooker]” He takes it gladly, biting off a decent chunk and chewing at it unbothered with a deadpan expression.
Nevermind.
Now the silence isn’t as awkward. You choose to sit here a while longer, enjoying this moment as much as you can before coming back to reality. The reality that there may be a war brewing. That—
Ralak isn’t here.
Well, that didn’t last long.
Sadness washes over you, making your ears droop and your tail heavy. Your baby gives you a sudden, hard kick in the ribs, as if he were telling his mummy to cheer up. You uncross your legs and shift your weight to the one side, getting ready to get up and be productive.
Zu’té seems to take note of that.
“Need to get up?” He asks, chucking yet another stick into the fire.
“I got it.” You grunt, shuffling to your knees.
Zu’té lets out a displeased grumble, understanding what his brother meant when he said you have a stubborn streak. He goes to help you anyways, supporting you by the elbow.
You’re just about standing when you feel a sharp stabbing pain in your back. It makes you jolt and grab onto Zu’té, whose slight irritation instantly turns into concern.
“Y/n.”
“I’m good, I’m good.” You repeat out of breath, steadying yourself before letting go. He seemed unsure if you really were okay. “Really. Happens all the time now.”
Zu’té nods, letting go and giving you a little more space. “Alright.”
——
The meeting spot is no other than the ‘head quarters’ of the ash people. It is only on this occasion that another clan may step foot on their land and walk away with a beating heart. That is, if all goes well. Tonowari is confident, however, knowing that the resource they provide the ash people is sufficient enough to prolong the treaty for many decades to come.
It is an ore that forms deep underwater, and can only be extracted by the most skilled divers. Divers that can hold their breath for up to half an hour. The use of this ore remains unknown to the reef people, but the ash people are quick to seize it almost instantaneously at the drop off point. The ore is plentiful among the reef, renewing itself as it is harvested—the act of the great mother restoring balance as needed.
Truth be told, although the reef people are a peaceful people, it is no secret that they hold some of the strongest warriors on Pandora. They are proud of their home, and will fight to protect it at all costs. Even the ash people know this. Which is the reason for their agreement on something as laughable as a ‘peace’ treaty.
Otherwise, what’s really to stop them from annihilating the reef people and taking the ore themselves?
Ralak meets with the others—Tonowari, Jake, Neytiri, and Ronal. They all set off far inland to the place the two clans met ten years ago. The trek is long and tiresome, leaving Ronal winded and in need of a couple breaks along the way. She is, too, heavy with child, but as tsahìk, she perseveres. Tonowari had tried to convince her several times to stay home, but she wouldn’t take no for an answer.
“We are here.” Tonowari announces as the group nears the settlement of their natural enemy. It’s a rocky environment, much like the reef but with plenty of soil and clay. “Heads straight. Ignore them.”
——
Zu’té stays nearby the marui as he tends to some of Ralak’s duties, keeping an eye on you from afar. You sit comfortably on the bottom step of the marui stairs, concentrating on finishing your baby’s sling. Your fingers are a little swollen, making it more difficult to weave. Frustrated, you plop the sling to your side and bury your face into your hands.
Everything is just too overwhelming right now.
“Your technique is poor.” Zu’té’s voice booms over you.
You look up, seeing this tall man with his hands on his hips tower over you, shading you from the sun. “Excuse me? I’ll have you know that I have plenty of knowledge on—”
“This is a prrsmung [baby carrier], yes?” Zu’té picks up the sling and sits himself next to you, searching for the point in which you left off.
You watch intently, intrigued to know his next move. He carefully unravels all the wefts you’ve managed to do since sitting on this damned step.
“What are you doing? Stop!”
Zu’té sighs and demonstrates a weaving technique you’ve never seen before, entwining and knitting the fabric until it comes together in an even neater fashion. You look at him in awe, dumbstruck that he was able to do that. Ralak dislikes weaving, in fact, he loathes it.
“Try it.” He says, plucking the fabric away from itself to unravel it once more before handing it back to you. You hesitate to take it, caught off guard from his unexpected, skilled movements.
“My fingers are swollen.” You say, feeling defeated and a little embarrassed. He looks down, noticing your five-fingered hand again, not nearly surprised as last time.
“Not as big as mine.” He tries to hand you the sling again. “You got it.”
Reluctantly, you take the sling and slowly mirror his movements, replicating the technique perfectly.
“See?” Zu’té sounds pleased with himself. Looking down at the sling, it dawns on you.
“So, you’re a weaver?” You ask the question as if you had just struck gold. “Usually the women take on that role.”
“Not here, forest girl.” Zu’té defends his role proudly, “But yes, I am.”
“Nice. It is good to see that. My grandmother is a great weaver, she taught me all I know.” You begin.
For as long as your body would allow it, you and Zu’té sat on that step and wove together. You wove the sling and he went to fetch his satchel to work on a piece of his own. Though you did most of the talking, and found yourself dodging one too many snarky remarks, a bond formed on that step.
You told him about your past at hometree, your reason for seeking uturu to begin with.
The sky people.
The words wouldn’t stop flowing, especially when you got onto the topic of how you met his brother. You explained that Ralak was your karyu [teacher] and how that quickly morphed into something much more beautiful. How you broke past his walls—took off his mask of indifference.
But then that awkward silence came again. The silence that reminded you why this stranger was in your home to begin with. That he was playing watchdog because your mate had to leave your side whilst being heavily pregnant.
“I lied.” Zu’té fills the silence. It has your ears perked up and your full attention on him. Your heart picked up speed, almost expecting something bad. “About?”
“That tattoo hurt like a kalweyaveng [son of a bitch].”
His confession has you bellowing out in laughter, clutching your stomach to keep you from shaking up your baby.
“I knew it.” You finally say once you calm down from a much needed laugh. “No good comes from trying to pretend that things don’t hurt, you know.”
Little did you know these words weighed heavy on him. Heavier than you meant for them to. He falls silent, contemplating if he should say what he’s about to. The real confession. The real reason behind the tattoo.
“I killed our spirit brothers.” He blurts out, astonished by his own voice.
Did I really just say that? Shit.
“What?” You exhale, your heart now galloping in your chest.
“It was twelve years ago. I was…seventeen. Sent out to war. I had to keep Ralak out of it. I went alone…lead a group of warriors to protect the tulkun.” His voice seizes up, as if his throat were closing. He looks away, fixing his gaze to his feet. “I was still learning. I didn’t know. I didn’t know. The sky people…they slaughtered them all.”
“Hey, hey. That’s not your fault, Zu’té. You didn’t kill them. The sky people did.” You rest your hand on his back, feeling how raised and toughened the skin where his inking lay deep.
Zu’té just looks at you, eyes trembling with vulnerability. It’s the first someone outside of the family has ever told him that. It’s something that he needed to hear.
“Is that why you fled? Ralak told me you left him.”
Zu’té nods, looking away in shame once more. “I abandoned him.”
You shake your head, knowing now that Ralak has healed and no longer feels this way. “He has healed Zu’té. And now it is your turn.”
Zu’té only nods, allowing the silence to fill the space again. This time it’s needed.
Until it's broken by a familiar voice.
“Sister.” Neteyam greets you at the bottom step, throwing a smile your way, then to your stomach. “Little one.”
He’s checking on you per your fathers request. Of course he wanted to ensure you were okay, too.
“Tey.” You smile big, happy to see such a familiar, comforting face. “I thought you went.”
You reach out for the railing to pull yourself up, and both Neteyam and Zu’té go to help you get up. You side-hug Neteyam, finding comfort in your brother. It’s been a hectic night.
“No, someone’s got to watch Tuk…and you.” Neteyam chuckles. As you let go, your glances at Ralak’s brother. “Neteyam, this is Ralak’s brother. Zu’té.” You introduce the two properly.
Taught manners from a young age, Neteyam gestures ‘I see you’ to the former warrior, and he returns the sign.
“Uncle TeyTey’s got you guys for the day.” Neteyam coos at your tummy, and then offers you his arm.
“Right...Dads orders?” You ask, happy to go with him.
“Dads orders.” Neteyam nods firmly, looking at Zu’té to relay the message. Zu’té returns the nod, being present to hear your fathers concerns about the entire arrangement. Besides, it’ll give him time to hunt for something proper for dinner.
“C’mon guys!” Lo’ak shouts from the ocean, mounted on his skimwing with Tuk behind him.
“See you. Think about what I said.” You say to Zu’té, prompting him to wave goodbye. Neteyam walks you to his tsurak, helping you to get on. You had retired your tsurak for the time being, finding it hard to ride with your back pain.
“Hey Lo’. Tuk-Tuk.” You say with relief in your voice, finding comfort in the company of your family.
——
The ash people are impudent to say the least. They follow behind the five na’vi weaving their way through the growing crowd, right on their tails as they try to get a better look at them. They are particularly interested in Jake and Neytiri, seeing the forest people for the first time. But most haven’t even gotten a look at the reef people yet, despite having the agreement with them for so many decades already.
Some even dare to poke and prod, tugging at their tails and their hair to get a feel or whiff of their scents. Tonowari, Jake, Neytiri and Ralak walk in a formation that allows Ronal to be in the centre, safe guarded from any pointed fingernails or astray noses. Ralak is on edge, but one could never tell by a glance. His appearance is intimidating, a stature so tall he and Tonowari tower over the crowd.
“I do the talking.” Tonowari says discreetly as they near the entrance of the hut.
The room is made of some sort of red clay substance, seemingly burnt to a char until it has been hardened into what feels like rock. This one in particular is large, containing smaller sectioned off rooms, partitioned with thick leather curtains. It's all very bleak, rid of liveliness and colour.
As they enter the hut, two bigger ash na’vi guard the door on either side, blocking and guarding the entrance behind them. Two more ash na’vi lead the group with spears to their backs to a large curtain, and shove them towards it with a few harsh jabs to Jake’s and Ralak’s spines. Jake snaps around, throwing them a dirty look. Whilst Ralak keeps his gaze fixed to his feet. He feels deep in his gut that something isn’t right.
Whether it be here, or back home.
With each step he takes, the sense of impending doom only worsens. He has no desire to be here but he recognizes that this is what is necessary. Yet, he can’t help the way he feels. And when he finally raises his head all the pieces link together. It all makes sense.
Before them are five na’vi in total. Two women and three men. Four ash na’vi and one…reef na’vi. A female, reef na’vi. Her face is unmistakable—unforgettable. It’s been seared into his mind since he was a young boy.
And when Ralak sees it, he almost caves in on himself. His mask of indifference—of intimidation, cracks. Hell, it shatters. Into thousands of pieces, scattered at his feet. Tonowari’s previous right hand. The banished.
His karyu.

Hii! If I may request something for Jing Yuan OR Ratio it'd be great BUT if this happens to be not your cup of tea I really understand and it's all good >:D <3 I love both of these men sm it's insane, but can I request either one of them with a dragon/vidyadhara reader who bites to show affection and she's just a lot more cuddly in privacy. Ratio could just be reading his book and she just takes one of his hands and nips at his wrist, or his shoulder when she hugs him from the back, and she leaves pretty marks all over her man when they're intimate. I just think it's really cute and I needed to at least share the idea with someone TuT Thank you! <3
Hiii, I had SO MUCH FUN with this idea! God It was so cute! (TMI but I find soft biting to be like a great love language) I actually did BOTH Jing Yuan AND Ratio for you because who am I to not finish what I started 🤭 I hope you like it!

"Oh, hey my love..." Jing Yuan was sitting in his chair glancing over papers. He looked a little busy but he always made time for you.
He smiled softly as he told you about his day of training Yanqing and how he was about ready to take an afternoon nap. His cheek resting on his hand as he glanced over his papers again.
The general has that lazy yet smug smile on his lips. "I'm sorry if I don't seem too excited to see you today my love...I assure you I am~..." He chuckles before glancing up to meet your gaze again.
You take a glimpse around to see if anyone's watching before you quickly walk over to his desk and slide into his lap. "I missed you today..." You whine and nuzzle your face into his neck.
"Oh, I missed you too, my dragon..." Jing Yuan chuckles softly at your whines. He hums quietly as he smiles. "How was the rest of your day? Anything interesting?" He said with his usual casual tone. He leans forward to give you a quick kiss before wrapping his arms around your waist.
Your scaly tail slides back and forth as you giggle. "My day was ok...not as exciting as I had hoped..."
"Aww... Why is that...?" He hummed softly as he nuzzled your neck. Seems like whenever he's around you, he's suddenly a bit clingy...but only a little, of course he has to keep his dignity as a General.
Even in front of you, his lovely girlfriend. He nuzzled you a second time before he pulled away to stare at you intently.
"Should I take you on a little date, darling?" It sounds more like a statement than a question. "I just so happen to have free time~"
"Hmm...maybe tomorrow...for now I just wanna cuddle..." You whisper softly as you start to nibble on his neck cutely.
"H-Huh?" Jing Yuan seems to be taken a bit off guard, he wasn't expecting your sudden nibbling on his neck. He couldn't help but shudder from time to time.
A small and soft blush is present on his cheeks, even the lazy General couldn't help himself when his beloved nibbles on his neck.
"Darlinggg..." He chuckles quietly, he hums quietly while he gently caresses the back of your head, slowly making his way up to your horns.
"Do you think I could...bite you more?" You whisper meekly.
Jing Yuan quickly lets out a quiet hum before looking at you with a smirk as he lifts your chin with two fingers. He looked at you with his piercing gaze as a playful glint can briefly be seen on his sharp irises.
"Bite me as much as you like, my dragon..." He teased as he lowered his neck to give you a better angle to bite.
Your eyes gleam with happiness as you start to take his armor off. "You're the best!"
Jing Yuan chuckles softly and he helps you undo his platings easily before taking off his upper garbs, leaving his upper body bare. It reveals a lot of scars; some light and small, others are large, deep, and jagged. "I have to look the most impressive after all~" He seems to tease, he couldn't help but chuckle at his own humor.
"Are you sure it's ok?" You whisper as you open your mouth and lower your face to his shoulders.
"Of course, darling. I am very certain." He whispers softly before suddenly shuddering when he feels your breath near his body.
It looked like he wasn't expecting it so suddenly, but the General contains his composure and just hums quietly as his hand made its way to your horns, gently caressing one before snaking it through your hair. He looked at you affectionately with his piercing gaze.
You giggle softly as you nibble on his shoulders and arms, leaving little bite marks before kissing each one. "It's my way of showing you...that I love you..." You mumble as you kiss a bite.
Jing Yuan let out a quiet hum, he seemed to be enjoying every kiss as he could feel his heart thumping in a steady but loud rhythm in his chest.
He couldn't help but let out another shudder as you left more bite marks, he couldn't help but find these tiny acts of yours...incredibly endearing.
"So you're showing me your love by biting me..?" He chuckles quietly before pulling you a little bit closer towards him and wrapped his arms around you.
"Yep!" You smile brightly, your tiny dragon teeth shimmering. "Is...that ok?" Your tail gently wraps around his leg.
His cheeks are lightly tinted with pink as he looks at you endearingly. He pulls you in tighter, feeling your body flushed against his warm bare chest in an embrace, it looked like his heart was just overflowing with affection as he chuckles softly.
"Darling, you're just so...URG...adorable. Of course, biting me is okay. But if you keep going like this, I don't know what I would do..." Your General teases.
You quickly bite his other shoulder and nibble on the spot. He peers down and sees your tail wagging back and forth gently, sparkling in the light.
Another low chuckle escaped from him, he didn't expect that you'd bite him again so soon.
He pulls you in closer before whispering into your ear, his warm breath gently caressing your sensitive skin, "My, a wagging tail? You're like a dragon in heat right now, darling~." He teases with a playful glint in his eyes as he nuzzles you.
You let go of his shoulder and pout. "We both know what happens when I'm in heat...so don't make fun..."
His thumb gently caressed your cute pout while he gave you another quiet chuckle, he found you incredibly adorable to the point where he couldn't help but tease or sometimes poke fun at you.
"My apologies, darling. I couldn't help it, you look extremely adorable right now..." He whispers softly before suddenly pulling you into a deep kiss.
You gently nibble on his bottom lip as you giggle into the kiss. Your tail stops wagging and curls around his leg again.
Despite your soft nibbling, he remained unbothered as he deepened the kiss even more, he pulled you in closer towards him and let you sit upon his lap once again.
You feel his warm hand making his way to your horns, tenderly caressing them with a soothing and loving touch.
"I love you..." You whisper softly against his lips.
You hear a quiet groan from him as you said those three simple yet meaningful words to him, he pulls away from the kiss and looks at you with his warm and fond gaze.
He was smiling yet he was also flushed pink on the cheeks. He takes a deep breath before holding your face with a gentle touch, staring at you like you were the sun, the moon, and the stars.
"Darling...I love you too..very much." He whispers softly before kissing your forehead gently.

You were super confused as you woke up to hear water running from the bathroom.
Wasn't it like...midnight!?
You climbed out of bed, shifting your tail as to not step on it, and went to the bathroom where the source of the sound was from. You gently open the door and smile as you see your husband taking his daily bath.
Home late from work, again, he's been working so hard. This caused the golden eyed brainiac to turn his head, slightly lowering his book with a soft questioning look.
"Oh it's just you my love, how did you sleep...well... technically you still should be asleep?" Ratio's chuckle and peaceful voice finally breaks the unspoken gaze as he motions for you to come in.
"You look tired...you should join me...then we can go to bed."
You kneel next to him in the tub and sigh with a tired smile. "Not right now...but Aeons you look handsome..."
He lets a small chuckle escape his lips as he sets down the book on the side of the bath and raises his hand to run his fingers across your cheek.
"And why is that? If I may ask."
He gently positions himself to be facing you, making it easier for him to appreciate your beauty and gently rests his chin on your forearm as he gazes into your eyes.
"Your eyes...hair...smile..." You giggle softly as your scaly tail wags across the ground. Pearly white fangs sticking out as you smile at him.
His eyes lit up with wonder and amusement, his fingers slowly trailing up to your cheek to graze gently against your dimples.
"I could say the same to you, darling. You're the most beautiful being in the universe..."
He gently presses his lips against your forehead, giving it a soft peck before lowering his lips to your collarbone, kissing it gently.
You lean forward and nibble at the hand brushing your face, leaving small marks on it.
As you nibble on his hand, Ratio lets a deep chuckle escape his lips, feeling his heart flutter from your endearing gesture.
"You are adorable, sweetheart."
He says as his hand gently slides down from your cheek and gently rests on your shoulder, giving it a soft squeeze.
"Hmm how was work?" You whisper as you motion for him to turn around, which he does, and you nibble on his shoulder as he talks.
He lets a soft sigh, his eyes closing as he smiles with amusement.
"I have solved another complex algorithm. Nothing quite interesting."
He leans back into your touch, his eyes still closed as he tilts his head to the side and lets you plant light bites on his shoulder.
"Everything you say..." You trail off as you leave another bite on his shoulder to make a heart shape with another bite. "Is interesting!"
He lets out a warm chuckle as he feels your teeth on his shoulder, a warm smile tugging on his lips.
"You are far too kind, sweetheart...sometimes for your own good"
He gently maneuvers his arm to slide a strand of your hair between his fingers and tugs it playfully, a mischievous smile forming on his face as he brings his free hand to rest in the water.
Your tail slides over to his other shoulder, slithering over it and tickling his cheek while you continue to nibble on him.
A quiet chuckle escapes his lips as the scales and tip of your tail tickle him, his hand trailing up to your chin to lift your face and plant a gentle kiss on your lips.
"Be a little more gentle, darling. You're not eating me, my dragon."
Ratio whispers in a playful tone, the corners of his mouth tugging in an amused smile before pressing his lips against yours in a deeper, but gentle kiss.
As you both pull away you pout at his words. "But I'm just showing you I love you~" You whine as you kiss one of the bites.
He lets a hearty chuckle escape his lips as he looks into your eyes, a smile tugging on his lips as he sees the pout on your face.
"You are being far too adorable, sweetheart."
He slowly turns around in the tub again and brings a hand to your chin, caressing it before leaning forward to plant a soft kiss on your lips, gently cupping your face as he deepens the kiss.
You smile against his lips and bring a clawed hand to slide over his shoulder and up into his hair.
He smiles against your lips, his eyes closing as his tongue slowly traces over your lower lip as he gently places his other hand against your waist.
For a moment as he kisses you, he pulls you closer to him, well with what he can without the barrier of the tub, his tongue slowly slipping inside your mouth.
He brushes his tongue against your fangs before seeking for your tongue, trying to fight for dominance.
You let out a low groan and a playful sigh as his tongue 'wins' in your mouth.
Ratio lets an amused chuckle vibrate in his throat as he hears your groan, his tongue gently slipping against yours, his hand that was on your chin slides up to your hair, gently tugging on it just enough to make you gasp.
As you gasp, he deepens the kiss, his tongue slowly wrapping around your own and caressing it, before slowly pulling away and gently nipping your lower lip.
Your eyes shoot open with a smirk. You pull away from the kiss. "And what was that my dear doctor?" You tease him with a seductive gaze.
He lets out a quiet chuckle, his eyes gleaming in mischievousness as his fingers slowly trail through your hair, gently tugging it as a small smile crawls onto his lips.
“Call it, payback, sweetheart.”
He whispers, gently placing a thumb on your chin, before lowering his lips down to trail kisses on your neck, gently nipping your skin.
"...I love you..." You groan out as he bites down hard, kissing it immediately after, before moving to another spot.
He smiles against your skin as the words slip out of your mouth, gently nipping on your neck and biting down hard as he continues, the vibrations of his breath ghosting over your skin as he murmurs a word in between breathless bites.
“I love you too, sweetling.”
"Hey how about you get out of that bath...and we move this to the bedroom?" You smirk softly.
He chuckles softly as he hears your proposal, his eyes gleaming with mischievousness and hints of lust.
“Eager, aren’t you love?”
He murmurs softly as he lifts himself up from the tub, a teasing smile on his face as he holds his hand out for you to take.
"Yeah you might wanna get dry first~" You toss a towel at him and stand to take his hand before planting a kiss on his nose.
A soft chuckle escapes his lips as he catches it, swiftly bringing it over his toned and muscular frame and beginning to run it all over his torso and arms.
“And what about you, my dear?”
He asks, a teasing smile on his face as he watches you gently planting the small kiss on his nose before back to you and pulling you close.
"I'm not the one who took a baAAATH!" You yelp as he pulls you down into the water. You squeal as your clothes get wet.
Ratio looks at your clothes, now completely wet and clinging to your body as he flashes you a devious smirk and a teasing look on his face.
“Well, looks like I did a good job getting your clothes wet. But I assure you, the night has just begun, my love.”
He whispers teasingly, a mischievous smile on his face as he watches you with a predatory look in his eyes.
"Oh ho ho!" You glare at him playfully before sliding your clothes off and placing them on the floor, leaving a puddle of water. "You're cleaning that later..."
Ratio watches as you slide out of your drenched clothes, the sight of your body making a smile break out on his face.
“Oh, I don’t mind. Though...you should stop being so damn distracting, or I just might make an even bigger mess.”
He says, his tone laced with teasing and teasing, watching you with a hungry expression, his eyes roaming over your body in an almost greedy way.
"You're going to pay for that~" You smirk as you straddle his lap before tying your hair up so it doesn't get in the way.
A devious look appears on his face as a playful and teasing smirk tugs on his lips.
“I would gladly pay the price, my love.”
He whispers, his hands slowly trailing down your waist, gently running them over your waist and pulling your frame closer to him, his tongue slowly trailing along the crook of your neck.
"You remember the word yes?" You smirk with lust in your tone.
His grip tightens on your waist, his eyes slowly trailing down to yours, a mischievous smile tugging on his lips as he speaks with a sultry tone.
“I do. And I remember your word too. We will be using it, later.”
He purrs, gently nipping your jawline and planting a light kiss on your lips.
"Good..." Your eyes narrow seductively before you pull away and open your mouth, leaning closer to bite his shoulders and biceps.
His eyes widened in pleasant surprise as you start to bite his shoulders and arms, a low groan escaping his lips and his arm flexes slightly as you bite his arm.
“Getting feisty aren’t you, darling?”
He purrs, his free hand gently wrapping around your neck and giving it a soft squeeze.
Your tail flicks back and forth, sloshing the water a bit. "Cmon doctor make your dragon feel good~" Your horns glow a soft hue as you smile with glee.
He lets a soft chuckle escape his lips as he watches your tail flick and slosh the water around, his gaze trailing over your horns that are glowing in a beautiful hue.
“Oh my dear, you’re a work of art. Even if you aren’t a path of The Hunt follower...”
He leans forward to gently trail his tongue over your neck as he lets out a pleasured sigh.
“You make my mind become a mess...”
"And here we go~" You smirk knowingly.

Ratio was sitting in his office, doing some final corrections on some papers. When all of a sudden, a certain annoying blonde-haired man walked in and started whistling and laughing.
Ratio sighed deeply and muttered a curse under his breath before looking at Aventurine.
“What do you want, gambler?”
He said irritably, looking up from his work and narrowing his gaze.
"Tough night with the missus?" His co-worker laughs and fiddles with a coin in his hand.
Ratio narrowed his gaze, giving the purple-eyed man a displeased look before taking a glance at his shoulder and arm, where there were visible bite marks and hickeys.
“It’s none of your business, you dim witted imbecile…”
He said in an annoyed tone, going back to his work and continuing to proof read his papers.
Aventurine clicks his tongue and shrugs. "Hey hey no need to get hostile there..." He turns and walks out, leaving Ratio to himself.
"Idiot..." He curses under his breath as he glances over in the mirror and starts to laugh. A bite in the shape of a heart is settled on his arm.
"Oh she's going to pay for that..." The golden-eyed man smirks.

Laney!!!!!!!! trick or treat ✨
hi kay <33 so i may have gone a bit insane and written you a full jarty microfic so…. here’s that
the alley | jarty microfic | 1.1k | nsfw | fighting, fucking, blood, spit, general grossness
It’s because of the hole at the bottom of Barty’s stomach that he keeps coming back. An insatiable need to consume. A relentless ache. And he’s never been one to deny himself anything, even when saying no would be so much easier.
James Potter sits across the dingy, low-lit bar, pint glass half empty and dripping condensation in front of him. It’s his fifth if Barty’s counting correctly. James glances at him, huffs a laugh and looks back at his beer. He knows what Barty’s planning, and he won’t stop it. He’ll play along like he always does, and they’ll both leave bloody and sore, covered in the indents of each other’s teeth.
Barty nurses his own drink until James drains his glass, then finishes the rest in one gulp. He’s already decided who’s paying for his next.
He’s been making eyes at some guy a few seats over from James the whole night, making sure James has noticed, and it’s time to go in for the kill. He raises his glass, catching the man’s attention, asking him sickly sweet with his eyes, buy me one?
The man moves down the bar next to Barty, asks the bartender to get him another, and Barty runs a hand up his arm.
“Sorry about this,” Barty whispers, leaning in to say the words directly into his ear.
The man pulls back, confused, only for a second before he’s being yanked back by his shirt and thrown to the ground. James is on him in a second with a fist to his jaw.
The man tries to protect his face, buck James off him, but it’s no use. When James gets like this, all you can do is take it. Barty would know.
After a few more strikes and the unmistakable sound of cracking bone, Barty intervenes. He wraps his arm around James’ neck from behind and pulls him off, cutting off his oxygen flow.
“You broke his fucking nose,” Barty says gruffly into James’ ear before pushing him toward the door.
James stumbles back, taking a few gulps of air before responding. “Whose fault is that?”
Barty shrugs, bares his teeth in a crude imitation of a smile. “Aw come on now, Jamie. Let’s not play the blame game.” He punctuates it with a wild punch to James’ cheek. He feels the skin split on impact, registers the trickle of blood down his fist only a second before James returns with a punch of his own straight to Barty’s gut. He doubles over, clutching at his stomach.
It’s grounding, the feeling of having all the air forced out of his lungs. He craves this over and over again. That blissful emptiness before his body forces him to suck the air back in. He can barely manage it before James’ knee connects with his nose, knocking him back and on his ass.
He tastes metallic as he runs his tongue along his teeth, smiles through the pain.
Glancing up, he can see James is being dragged out by two huge guys, but he isn’t fighting. Barty waits his turn, until he, too, is being hauled up and out the door.
The cold air bites into Barty’s skin as soon as he’s thrown outside. He loses his balance with the force of the push, catching himself on the concrete with his hands. He’ll have nasty scratches for days.
“Jesus fucking christ,” James says from above him, yanking him up and pushing him against the nearest brick wall. “You’re sick, you know that?”
Barty’s vision blurs, he can’t tell left from right, but he can tell James is mad mad. The kind of mad only Barty can make him.
“If I'm sick, what does that make you?” he taunts.
James lets out a noise of aggravation, deep and low in his throat, before he smashes their lips together.
It’s hungry and gross and bloody, a combination of want and disgust that equals out to some perverse replica of relief.
James breaks the kiss, dragging Barty behind him to the alley beside the bar. It already smells rotten and wet; they don’t even have to try.
It’s quick and disorienting, the way James shoves his hand down Barty’s pants, palming at his cock a little too harshly.
“Fuck,” Barty grunts, surprised by the sudden pressure. It’s riding that perfect line of too much and not enough.
“Shut your fucking mouth,” James growls. “Get me into a fight and now you want to complain?”
“My only complaint is that you’re not on your knees already,” Barty bites back, raking his teeth down James’ neck, breaking skin when he bites into the soft skin connecting it to his shoulder.
James honest to god whines, busying his hands with unzipping Barty’s pants. “Fuck, B.”
Barty pushes his thumb into the fresh wound, smearing the blood, mixing it with his own before licking a stripe up James’ neck. They always taste so good together like this. He hates how much he likes it.
James doesn’t waste time after that, sinking down and pulling Barty’s cock out. He takes him down to the base quickly, and Barty can feel his throat relaxing around him, struggling to take it all.
“That’s it, Jamie,” Barty coos, condescension dripping from his tongue. “So fucking eager.”
James pulls back, lightly scraping his teeth over Barty’s head in a way that makes him see stars. It’s a warning. This isn’t submission.
Barty grabs roughly at James’ hair, keeping him in place so he can fuck down his throat easily. He watches as James’ eyes stay defiant, never breaking contact. His fingers dig into the meat of Barty’s ass, no doubt leaving nail marks as he pulls Barty deeper with each thrust.
“I hate you so fucking much,” Barty spits with an exceptionally harsh thrust. James gags around him, eyes watering so pretty, tears streaking through smears of blood. Even still, he doesn’t break.
Barty knows James hates him too. It’s why he loves to say it when James can’t respond, can’t argue. He sees it in his eyes, though. That utter fucking disdain. It’s what ultimately has Barty pulling out and coming all over James’ face, painting him in an obscene mural of blood, spend, and tears.
James closes his eyes finally, but keeps his mouth open to catch what he can. Barty uses two fingers to swipe through the mess of fluids, bringing them to his own mouth to taste the sharp tang. He lets it sit on his tongue, mix with his own saliva before spitting it into James’ open mouth.
James swallows, always a little too eager to please, and sits back on his haunches. Barty can see where the dirty alley water has seeped into the knees of his jeans, but James doesn’t seem to care.
He looks up at Barty again, none of his rage extinguished. “When we get home, I’m going to fuck you so hard you forget your name.”
Barty just smiles. “I’d like to see you try.”

Here is my first day of O'Knutzy Week! @oknutzy-week-2024
I ADORE you all for treating these characters of mine to a week of fun. I can't even put into words how much it means to me. I'm so looking forward to reading your creations!
Please enjoy tennis boys...
(There is an extremely brief and not at all graphic description of injury in the beginning.)
Finn O’Hara’s career was ended too soon by a bad knee injury. Logan Tremblay has no coach and a wicked temper that’s hard to control on the court—that is, until O’Hara steps into the picture.
On The Line - Part One
Logan was on a massage table when he saw. He’d been feeling a little stupid. He had been meant to be watching Finn’s game, studying his flaws and his strengths. Instead his cheek was pressed to the towel beneath him while someone dug their knuckles into his calf, and he was watching a bead of sweat find the corner of Finn’s mouth in a close up shot.
“This feel all right?” Hands were on his ankle now.
No, Logan thought, eyes on Finn. This feels like I’m going insane.
“Yes,” Logan said faintly. “Merci.”
Finn had his usual blue Nike hat on, and when he took it off before he served to wipe his face, Logan could see the white, salty sweat stains inside. How long had he had that hat? Logan remembered seeing it in Juniors. How many brand deals had its necessity written into it? Client insists upon…
Logan wanted that hat. He wanted to hold it.
Finn served. A perfect bullet of a thing that sent goosebumps up Logan’s shoulders, but Lupin still returned. It was second set, Finn had won the first. He was set to win this one, too.
Logan’s hotel room door opened and Logan didn’t look up. People came and went every hour of every day. This time, it was, Luke, his closest friend on tour besides Finn, and a room service cart of grilled chicken and broccoli. Logan eyed the chocolate cake slice there, too. One benefit of not having a coach or any sort of team following him around like the others did. He could eat whatever he wanted.
Luke leaned over to see his eyes. “Pascal Dumais is in the lobby. Black’s coach? I was thinking—”
“Non.” Finn was sitting in his chair now, drinking water. He turned and said something to the young ball kid holding an umbrella over him. Logan bit back a smile watching the ball kid do the same. Finn let his own grin cross his face.
Stop it, Logan thought. Stopitstopitstopit.
“He might know someone who you’d like to work with.”
“Non.”
Luke rolled his eyes. “Logan.”
“I don’t want a coach, Luke.” Logan tore his eyes away from Finn. “I’ve told you this one thousand times.”
Black served, and Finn returned, letting out a soft sound while doing it. Stop it. He’s your best friend.
“Don’t you think it could help you?” Luke asked. “Just talk to him, Tremz. Honestly, look, I certainly don’t want you getting any better. I have my own career to think about. But you’re my friend and your temper costs you thousands alone—”
There was a shout from the TV. A horrible, gut-wrenching sound that any athlete could identify. Someone had gone down.
“O’Hara runs for—” said a commentator. “Oh. Oh, oh, oh dear.”
Logan pushed himself up on his hands, dislodging the massage therapist from his back. Luke snapped towards the television, too.
“Shit,” Luke whispered.
Logan couldn’t have managed words if he tried.
Finn was on the ground, first on his back and then rolling helplessly onto his side, his hands locked around his knee. The cry had come from him. Lupin dropped his racket and ran across the court. Logan got one last look at Finn’s face before his view was blocked by the flock of medics surrounding him.
“That…does not look good,” said the therapist and began working again. Logan hardly felt the knuckles against his shoulders.
His heart was pounding. When another sound came from Finn, wrecked and in so, so much pain, Logan flinched.
The hands on his back disappeared in a flash. “Mr. Tremblay, I’m so sorry, did I—are you hurt?”
The camera caught every frantic rise and fall of Finn’s chest. Another close up. Sweat beaded on Finn’s forehead for an entirely different reason and the grimace of pain. His teeth were pressed together, eyebrows drawn. His fall had knocked the blue hat off and his dark red hair looked vivid and bright against the hard court.
Yes, Logan thought. Everything in him was on fire and begging to get that look off Finn’s face. Yes, I’m hurt.
~
Logan knew what the headline would be before he even saw it. Logan Tremblay fined $15,000 for skipping his mandatory press conference to go visit injured Finn O’Hara in hospital.
Finn knew it, too. No sooner had Logan made it through the door than was Finn throwing ice chips at him.
“What the fuck, Lo?”
“You weren’t answering your phone.”
“Fifteen thousand dollars.”
“I think I can afford it.” Logan dragged a chair over from the wall, sat, and didn’t plan on getting up until he knew Finn was going to be all right.
Finn looked exhausted, but the worry on his face was worse. His countless freckles looked stark in the hospital room light. Logan tried to see past it, into the bright eyes that had looked at him for the first time when they were sixteen. This face…Finn. Finn, who Logan had been longing for ever since.
Finn smiled weakly at him. His hands were knotted up in his sweatshirt. His knee was bandaged and elevated on a pillow.
“You could have waited an hour,” Finn said.
Logan didn’t know how to tell him no. No, he couldn’t wait. An hour would have been torture.
Finn cracked a smile. “But I guess you would have cursed out a reporter and made it twenty thousand.”
Logan couldn’t help it. He smiled back. Where he was bad with words, Finn was understanding. Sometimes Logan thought Finn could read him with just one look.
“Remember Rome?” Finn asked. “Where we met?”
Logan closed his eyes. Finn read his mind with just one look. “Of course.”
“I was dreaming about it, I think, when they put me under.”
“What, me beating you?”
Finn laughed and Logan had to look away. He reached out and brushed light fingers against the bundle of bandages.
“No.” Finn sighed and leaned his head back against the pillows. “That pool. And that wine.”
The almost kiss, Logan thought. One look at Finn, who was smiling slightly, and he knew he’d been read again.
“It was a good night,” Logan said.
Finn nodded. “Hm.” He tilted some ice chips into his mouth and crunched them. “Ended a little soon for my taste.”
Logan smothered a smile with his hand over his mouth. He wasn’t sure why they danced around it. It wasn’t like it wasn’t allowed. Male players dated female players all the time. Only, they never had to play against each other.
They listened to the buzz of the lights. A nurse came and went with water and pain medication. On top of the sheets, their hands found each other. Finn’s was cold from holding the ice and Logan encased it in his own.
Quietly, Finn said, “I think it’s over.”
“It’s not over.”
“I think it is.” Finn’s eyes were on his knee. “It’s not good, Lo. It’s just…It’s not good.”
“How long?”
“I’ll heal up okay, but…But knees are fragile and this isn’t the first time I’ve had a problem. Well, this is more than a problem, but…”
“Give it time.”
“That’s not what they told me.”
“It’s not over. Your game is too beautiful to be over.” You’re too…
Finn’s lip trembled. “Thanks.”
Logan wanted to fix it. Now. Now.
But Finn was Finn and so he let out a slow breath and tilted his chin up. “Maybe it’s okay.”
“It’s…okay?”
He closed his eyes. “I’m alone in hotels. I mean, besides my coach, besides the trainers. But that’s what this life feels like sometimes. People telling you where to go and sleeping in strange beds.” Finn looked down, then carefully back at Logan. “I love the game. God, I do. But…maybe I want something different now. I mean, a family. A…a partner.”
Logan’s stomach tightened. Finn, off somewhere, with—with someone. With someone. Someone who didn’t know him. The possessiveness that burned through Logan’s chest ached.
“It takes a specific kind of person to want to live this kind of life,” Finn said.
Why do you think I work alone?” Logan said.
Finn huffed out a laugh. “I mean someone who’s separate from tennis.”
It was a slap. It was a knife. “Do you…do you want them to be separate from tennis?”
Finn sighed. “I want them to love me. So many players have people who follow them, and are with them, but are they with them? It’s all about the player’s dreams. Tennis. What they want. I mean, I’m racing towards…titles. Yes. And I love it but, I want to make sure I can—you know. I want to make sure my person isn’t ignored. I want it to be equal.” He looked at his knee, seemed like he wanted to speak again, but didn’t.
Logan just held his hand and tried not to say anything stupid.
“Don’t you get lonely?” Finn asked softly. “With no coach, no team…”
“I have the game,” Logan replied. “The titles. And you.”
“Maybe me.”
“And you,” Logan said fiercely. “And Luke.” Finn rolled his eyes and Logan couldn’t help but laugh. “Why do you hate Luke so much?”
“I don’t. He’s just…always around.”
Logan laughed harder. “He’s on tour with us.”
Finn’s fingers tightened around his. “Maybe I like having you to myself.”
Logan was going to cry, suddenly and blubberingly. Finn not on tour. Please no.
Finn saw it and gave him a smile, even as his own eyes filled. “Maybe I will be your coach.”
Logan half laughed, half wiped his nose. “Think I’d listen to you?”
There was no hesitation and almost no sadness when Finn answered, “Yes.”
~
Over the next months, Logan was introduced to tour life without Finn. Luke was great, and they hit together, but he wasn’t Finn. He was too serious to be Finn, and Logan had enough seriousness all on his own. Finn, who’d dump the entire pitcher of ice water on Logan’s head just for fun. Finn, who made them take breaks to go find a nice lunch spot in a part of a city they hadn’t been before.
They spoke on the phone. For the first little while, Finn sounded miserable. In pain. But then he started to sound better. He started talking about how much time he had to read, to sleep. To actually watch the game he loved so much. He’d dissect all of Logan’s opponents for him and—and Logan was winning. A lot. It just made him miss Finn more. The money was good, but he had more than enough money. The trophies got sent back to his home in LA, but he was never home.
Logan distracted himself. He got himself up each morning and went through his routine. The hotel staff of whatever hotel he was in brought him a smoothie. He ran. He hit with Luke until Luke’s coach didn’t like how fast Logan could take apart Luke’s game. Then it was just Logan and a random hitter he’d been assigned. He ate room service and watched game tape. It only took him a week to realize he was always waiting for that knock on his door. That Finn knock. Bum-bum-ba-bum. Let’s go, Tremblay, get out of your head for a bit.
By the time four months had past, he thought he’d die if he didn’t hear it.
“I miss you,” Logan said quietly one night, eyes on his dark ceiling. It was so bad, this waiting for Finn, that sometimes that he had to pause and press a hand to his chest. He’d actually asked the physicians about it, just in case he was mistaking missing Finn for an actual problem. They had looked at him funny, told him everything looked and sounded perfectly normal.
What hurts? one had asked.
Nothing. Logan had said. I just wanted to make sure.
Now, in the cool hotel room, the rustle of Finn’s breath on the other end of the line made Logan close his eyes.
“I miss you, too,” Finn said. “A lot. Congrats against Knut, by the way. He a fucking rocket. And he’s only going to get better, what is he, twenty-two?”
“Something like that. I only barely beat him.”
“Sure, but you did.”
“Thanks to you,” Logan said. “I never play better than when we’ve talked about it.”
“Well.” Finn sounded proud. “Hey, you know, I’ll be cleared to travel soon. I might not be playing but I could—”
“Yes,” Logan said. “Please.”
Please, please, please.
Finn laughed. “You don’t even know what I was going to say.”
“Please come.”
More rustling. Finn lying down in bed?
“Okay,” Finn said. “Okay, I will.”
Logan rolled onto his side, cradling the phone close. “Hurry.”
“As fast as I can. I’ll look for hotels tonight.”
“No, don’t stay somewhere else.”
“Lo, I can afford your hotel with sponsors, but not like this. I’m not you.”
“No, I mean stay with me.”
This big, cold hotel suite. Logan wandered through the rooms, floated between the hot courts and this cold, cold marble.
Silence on the other line. Logan’s heart picked up, until he heard a breath that he was sure had a smile in it.
“All right.” Finn let out a laugh that sounded like it was covered by his hand. “Okay.”
Logan had to smother his smile in his pillow. “Okay.”
They stayed on the line for what felt like hours—probably minutes—breathing and listening to each other and nothing at all. Completely quiet, but it was the most not alone Logan had felt in weeks.
Finn arrived, suitcase and backpack and those massive headphones that used to be Logan’s. He knocked on Logan’s door. Bum-bum-ba-bum. He looked tired from the plane ride. He opened his mouth to say something, a grin on his face. It was probably going to be something sarcastic.
But Logan launched himself into his arms, clinging tightly around his neck.
Finn grunted out a laugh, but held him back. “Hey, hey.”
Finn rubbed a hand up and down his back once. When had Logan last been touched in a way that wasn’t medical? Finn’s hand cupped the back of his neck and Logan knew he went weak against him but he couldn’t help it. Finn didn’t seem to mind. He held Logan’s weight. It was the middle of the night anyway, Logan could blame it on that.
“Have you been up?” Finn asked. “You need your sleep.”
“I couldn’t miss your knock.”
Finn’s hands stilled. He pressed his fingers into Logan’s spine, right where he was always sore. “I would have…I would have banged the door down.”
Logan laughed and pulled back. He realized how long he had been holding onto him, that he was still holding on. He let go, suddenly bashful.
“I can call for food,” Logan said. “Are you hungry? I mean, come in first.” He laughed, stumbled a little as he stepped back. “Come in.”
He watched Finn drop his bags onto the floor and look around. The main living room was the size of three hotel rooms. The bedrooms were spacious and had a connecting master bath. There was a kitchenette that all of Logan’s sponsors had stocked with snacks and the various energy bars and drinks they represented. Logan hated energy bars. Grainy and chewy. He brought cups of fruit onto the court with him instead and didn’t care how unhappy it made anyone. Logan watched Finn walk around. He’d left his rooms sort of a mess. Finn avoided the various piles of sponsor clothing without comment. He touched the two Rolex watches Logan was expected to put on during post-game interviews and press conferences. Those were supposed to be in the closet safe. He brushed his fingers over Logan’s secret favorite sweatshirt which was draped over the back of the couch—it was Adidas, which he wasn’t allowed. If he ever got caught on camera in it, it would be horrible. He only wore it alone, inside. Or with Finn.
“Must be nice to be number two in the world,” Finn said.
Logan rubbed the back of his neck. “It’s okay.”
I miss you. I miss youImissyou.
Finn smiled and raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, it’s okay.”
“Shut up,” Logan laughed. “Are you hungry?”
“Yes,” Finn said.
And, suddenly, Logan had new nights. The days were the same. He left Finn with his crutches and his ice packs and his rehabilitation routine to practice and prepare for his next match. But his nights. Card games with Finn on the balcony. Get out of your head, Tremblay. We’re relaxing now. You’re with me. Video games, side by side on the couch. Dinner in the hotel restaurant, or somewhere in a city that Finn had found. Laughing so hard he couldn’t breathe. So happy that it became a blur of one day, I am going to kiss you. Please, let me kiss you one day.
That morning after he won Indian Wells, he sat poolside with Finn and everything was almost perfect.
“You know what I wish Nike would do for once?” Finn said.
“What?” Logan looked over his sunglasses at Finn.
“Dress you in your colors.”
Logan looked over at Finn and laughed. They were poolside, cooling off from a morning run back at the hotel. Well, Logan had run. Finn and his bad knee had rode beside Logan in a golf cart and shouted encouragement far too gleefully.
Now, Finn had a duffle bag in front of him and was ripping into the stuff Nike had sent over for the French Open. Red shirt. Blue shorts. White piping.
“French fucking flag.” Finn sighed. “Typical.”
“I’m French,” Logan replied. “It’s my home court, in Paris.”
“I know you are, but it’s typical.”
Logan smiled, popping another macadamia nut into his mouth. They were good. Spicy and salted. The guy that had brought them a pitcher of lemony ice water had set them down, too. “And what’s my color, then?”
Finn reached over the side table between them and pulled Logan’s sunglasses off his face. “Take a look in the fucking mirror.”
Logan snatched the glasses back. Green, he guessed. Logan rolled those eyes and Finn smiled at him.
For a moment, Logan imagined Finn bracing his hands on the sides of Logan’s hips. They’d dip into the mesh of the lounge chair and bring Finn even closer when he kissed him.
Everything was almost perfect.
Logan put his glasses back on. “Just wait until Paris,” Logan said. “It will be more red and blue than you’ve ever seen in your life.”
“Oh yeah? Why’s that?”
“Because I’m going to win.”
Clay surfaces were his home. What more did he need?
They flew together to Paris. Finn’s knee was healing, but Logan didn’t let him carry anything. Not his backpack, not their food for the plane.
“You’re worse than my mom was when she came to visit,” Finn said.
They were taken to a new hotel, a new grand suite. If the manager that personally showed them around gave them a particular sort of look, Logan didn’t care. Finn certainly didn’t seem to care. He spent a good part of the tour with his arm thrown around Logan’s shoulder. Forgot my crutch, he said. Need someone to take some of my weight.
Logan was still smiling about that as he made his way along the buffet station at breakfast the next morning. Finn had used the trick again. Knee’s sore, Lo, won’t you make my plate for me? Logan didn’t think he’d ever enjoyed anything more than picking out Finn’s favorites. He was so focused on finding the perfect burnt pieces of bacon that he didn’t even see the waffle flying out of tongs and towards him until it was on his plate.
“Shoot, I’m so sorry, oh my God, I didn’t…oh.”
Logan looked up and the voice—and up. Blond, was his first thought, quickly followed by blue.
It was Leo Knut. Six-foot-something, wicked serve, one-handed backhand, American. Younger than Logan. Rumored to be poised to break all the records. Logan’s, Black’s, anyone’s. And he’d be around longer to do it.
“I’m sorry,” Leo said, truly looking apologetic, and for a moment Logan thought he was talking about the records. Leo looked down at the waffle. “I don’t know if you want that, but…there you go.”
“It’s…fine,” Logan said uncertainly. “It’s fine.”
Leo smiled at him. “Okay… Hey, I don’t think we’ve officially met besides…” Me beating you, Logan thought. “I’m Leo.”
“Ouais, I know.”
Leo laughed. “Oh. Well, that’s a little dream come true for my younger self.”
Logan tilted his head. “Oh.” He was pretty used to that. And he guessed it was a compliment—even if he was technically being called old. Also, for some reason he was blushing.
“And you’re…” Leo raised his eyebrows.
“You know who I am, you just said.”
“All right…” Leo’s blue eyes looked him up and down. “Well. Enjoy the waffle. And good luck.”
“You too,” Logan said, and headed towards the orange juice.
When he got back to their table, Finn was looking at him with amused eyes.
“Quoi?” Logan asked. “Shut up, what?”
Finn laughed. “Nothing. Nothing, just…”
“Quoi?”
Finn laughed and held up his hands. “You’re a really nice person, but not many would think it upon meeting you.”
Logan blinked. He looked over at Knut, who was sitting with one of the Black brothers. “What? I was—I was nice. You don’t even know what I said, you were over here!”
“You had his statistics you were thinking about all over that pretty face of yours.”
“I…” Pretty face. “He gave you a waffle.”
“Oh-ho,” Finn picked up his fork. “Yeah, I saw what happened. Octopus limbs, that’s what that one has.” Finn cut himself some waffle. “It was kind of sweet.”
Logan stared at him. Sweet?
Blond. Blue. Sweet.
“What is his accent?”
“Louisiana,” Finn said around some bacon.
“Lou…ouais-ana.” Logan caught Finn smiling again. “What?”
“I just like the way you talk, that’s all.”
~
“Me again,” Finn said later that night, tossing down his cards with a grin.
Logan groaned. “This isn’t fun anymore.”
“Ha, why? Because you’re not winning? You gonna curse me out like you do on the court?”
Logan rolled his eyes. He offered Finn another pour of wine.
“Oo-way.”
Logan could hear the pop-pop of one of a game of table tennis from somewhere. Finn kept glancing towards the sound—even while winning.
“Do you miss it?” Logan asked quietly. He put his card down without really looking at it. He was too focused on this new, slightly unhappy set of Finn’s jaw.
“Yeah,” Finn replied. “I mean, of course. It’s my life. Was.”
Logan nodded.
“But.” He smiled slightly. “This has been…really good, Lo. Really good for me. Thanks for letting me…” Finn glanced around balcony, then over at their suite. “Be here. I’ll need to find some way to pay you back.”
“Non,” Logan said. “You don’t.”
“I do,” Finn said. “I do. I don’t mean—I mean, I pay for the stray dinner but I—”
Logan leaned forward and covered Finn’s hand with his. Their cards mingled and showed between them, but Logan didn’t care about the game.
“I don’t want your money,” Logan said. “I want you—here.”
Finn had his eyes on their hands.
Logan tried to think of a way to tell him that he’d been right. That he had been so unbearably lonely.
And then his phone started to ring.
Logan closed his eyes when he caught sight of the number. “Stupid sponsors.”
Finn cracked a smile and let Logan’s hands go. “Who?”
“My agent. Probably about…” Logan flashed the Rolex he was wearing. “I forgot to put it on last press conference.”
Finn hummed and raised his glass of wine to his lips. “Looks good on you, though.”
Logan took the call inside and blushed the entire time.
~
The crowd was on his side. It was his home crowd. France adored him. He couldn’t walk through the city without being cheered—even sometimes from passing bicycles.
Finn was in his box. Finn, who the commentators had started referring to as Logan’s unofficial coach. Over the last months, they practiced together, Finn shouting advice and commands—bolder and bolder. He ran Logan through drills that used muscles Logan hadn’t even thought of before. Logan was in better shape than he’d ever been in his life, that annoying twinge in his ankle was gone. Not better—gone.
And he was still losing this final somehow. He’d made it this far and Black was wiping the floor with him, literally. Twice Logan had stumbled and fallen into the clay. He was covered in the stuff. His back, his butt, his face. Usually, he loved that. The grit. The taste. But he couldn’t shake this humiliation. The somewhat quiet crowd. This sense that, after such perfection he’d experienced lately, it was just a fluke. That he wasn’t enough.
At one of change-overs, he used his bathroom break. His fists were clenched, his teeth grit. He knew the cameras were just waiting for him to lose it like he always did.
But Finn was watching, right next to his sisters and his parents. He needed to get to the locker room. Then he could throw something.
No sooner had he shoved the door open and stepped inside, than Finn was there. He slipped in silently. Logan didn’t know how he’d gotten in, but there he was. Wearing his old, blue Nike hat and one of Logan’s Nike shirts. He was flushed from the sun and so infuriatingly calm. Hands in his pockets. Logan was standing in a second, throwing his own hat aside.
“I’m losing it,” Logan shouted. “Every fucking shot Black takes—”
But he didn’t get farther than that.
Finn took Logan’s face in his hands, none too gently. He got close. His brown eyes were fierce. Familiar. Logan went slack and quiet in his hold. For a moment, it was just their breathing.
“Get out,” Finn whispered and Logan could feel his breath against his cheek. “of your fucking head.”
And then Finn kissed him.
His mouth was warm. There was the bitter hint of sunscreen. The sweetness of the cinnamon gum he always chewed. Sweat. Logan felt himself stumbled, surprised. As quickly as Finn caught him around the waist, Logan was clutching at his shoulders. Yes. The word sped through and made his ears ring. Finn’s hands swiped down against his neck and then gripped his shirt, pulling back.
Logan was too surprised to chase him. Finn looked down at him, breathing just as hard.
“You are going to win,” Finn said harshly. He took his hat off and put it on Logan’s head, backwards how he liked it. And he let go. He turned and walked out.
Logan stood there. He touched his lips. Finn.
Slowly, he adjusted Finn’s hat.
Finn.
He used the bathroom.
Finn.
He adjusted the sweatband on his wrist.
Finn.
He caught sight of himself in a locker room mirror. Where his cheek had hit the clay, Finn’s fingers had wiped streaks of red clay away. Like he was still touching Logan. Like he was all over him. People would probably expect him to wash his face while he was in here.
He didn’t.
The sun beat down on him as he walked back out onto the court. The crowd cheered, maybe for him, maybe that the game was picking up again. Logan didn’t care. All he knew was that he felt lighter. He could move easier, he could breathe. Even the sight of Black, waiting for him impatiently, didn’t phase him. Some killer, mentally crushing spell had been broken. Finn had broken him back into himself.
And when he won, Logan swore he heard Finn shout first, seconds before the stadium exploded. Like Finn had so much faith in him that he could see the perfect placement of the ball on Logan’s racket and sense its spin. He probably could. Logan fell down onto his back. He squeezed his eyes shut and felt the stadium thunder for him.
Trem-blay, Trem-blay!
What a come back, what a bloody come back, the commentators were probably saying.
He shook Black’s hand. He threw his wrist bands into the crowd. He kept Finn’s hat. Finn was standing there in the players box with his arms raised, his hands fists and the widest smile on his face. His sisters beside him were jumping up and down, hugging each other.
Fucking yes! Logan saw Finn’s mouth move around the words, reading his lips. He held out one of those fists to Logan, the same one that had gripped his t-shirt not too long ago. Yes, Lo.
Without thinking, Logan started to climb towards his box. He knew they were supposed to use the stairs now, but there was no time. He had to get to Finn. He had been so tired a moment ago that his muscles shook, but he couldn’t feel that now. He needed to get to them, to reach them. His sisters. His parents. Finn, who had changed his world. His entire world. In two seconds.
He felt some of the crowd reach out and touch him, grasping his shoulders. They were still chanting his name. He swung himself over the railing, nearly stumbling once, and then he was in Finn’s arms. Finn thumped him hard on the back and then knotted his fingers into Logan’s sweaty hair.
“I knew it,” Finn whispered hoarsely against his neck. “I fucking knew it, I’m so proud of you, oh God, I’m so fucking proud of you. Lo, I can’t even breathe, you played so well. You did it, your game, oh my God, your game—”
Logan closed his eyes and let Finn wash over him.
“Thank you,” Logan whispered. “Thank you, thank you…”
Finn pulled back to look at him, palm on his cheek. He was smiling so wide Logan thought it must hurt—he also knew the same expression was on his own face. Finn, who deserved it all. This. Logan had the wild, overwhelming urge to give Finn the trophy, the prize money, all of it. It was his.
Logan was so unquestionably Finn’s.
“Lo,” Finn said. There were tears in his eyes. “Thank you.”
He thought about kissing Finn right then and there.
He was enveloped by his sisters. They screamed in his ears and he laughed, loud and delirious.
Even having to give a speech couldn’t bring him down. He thanks the people he was told to thank, and then he thanked the people he wanted to thank. The crowd, he praised in French. In English, his parents. His sisters. And then—
“And—and Finn. My—” My? So many words filtered through Logan’s mind. English, French, it didn’t matter. “Who’s supported me and—” He kissed me. He kissed me. “I couldn’t have done it without any of you. Merci.”
He met Finn in the tunnel, confetti still on his shoulders, still holding his trophy. Finn laughed, let out a long whoop that brought people’s eyes and smiles towards them.
Logan held out the trophy. “Yours, too.”
“It’s not mine.”
Kiss me, Logan thought. Kiss me again. Finn looked like he might.
Instead, Finn just kissed the trophy where Logan had and then raised it above his head with another shout. A few people actually started clapping and Finn turned towards the sound with a grin.
“Okay,” Finn said, cradling the trophy against his side. “Go get on the bike.”
Logan just stared at him. He was still breathing hard. He could feel sweat trailing through the clay on his neck.
Finn pushed the trophy back into his arms and slapped him on the side of his ass. “Hello, what’s wrong with you, get on the bike before you get stiff—”
“If you think I can do anything but be alone with you right now,” Logan said in a low voice. Finn’s brown eyes widened. “You’re insane.”
Finn’s pupils were vast and black. He wet his lips. Slowly, he smiled.
“Get on the bike,” Finn whispered. “Then, we have a party to go to. And you’re the guest of honor.”

The Producer: Second Audition ft. Huh Yunjin
A/N: you can consider this a one-shot to the main series or perhaps a glimpse into the future of what's to come. either way i wanted to post it because It honestly might be one of my favorite things i've written in a minute and i'm not sure when the next chapter installment will be. enjoy!
pairing: huh yunjin x m!reader/oc summary: After first evaluations don’t go as planned, PD-nim gets an unexpected visitor at his office. rating: Explicit
Tumblr media
An unexpected knock at your door pulled you from the pile of documents on your table.
“Come in!” you called.
The past 48 hours had been a crash course in learning that while your uncle may have invested in modern facilities, he had not invested in modern record keeping. You and Jessica had already discussed hiring someone to help with converting everything to digital but for now the task was left up to you to sort through the records. A task that was proving tiresome at best. So when Yunjin poked her head through your door it was a welcome relief.
“Yunjin, what can I do for you?”
You didn’t feel as though you had a chance to truly get to know any of the girls as of yet. And with evaluations ongoing it made any attempts at breaking the ice even more tense. Except for Hyejoo who seemed unphased by anything, least of all your presence.
“PD-nim,” Yunjin greeted, her voice sounding surprisingly strained. “Do you have time to talk?”
“Of course. What’s on your mind?”
From what Jessica had told you of Yunjin she was quite the extrovert. And you had noticed it when seeing the girls interact with each other. But as she stood before you now she seemed almost nervous, apprehensive even; but there was a quiet determination in her eyes. Curious, you reclined back into your chair and eyed her. She fidgeted with her hands for a moment before putting them behind her back.
“I wanted to talk about my evaluation.”
“Ah…”
“I was nervous and trying to impress you. I didn’t perform anywhere near my best,” she began to ramble. “And I know Lily and Chaehyun still have their evaluations coming up and I know they both have fucking amazing voices...”
You nearly choked on air the way she swore openly.
“Sorry,” she quickly amended before continuing, “I just don’t want you to think that this is the best I can do. I will do anything to debut. I need this and I want you to have the best impression of me.”
Fuck. This was the part of the job you were going to feel guilty about. Even the person who was usually cool, calm and collected was pouring her heart out in hopes that she wouldn’t be cut from the debut group. Is this why your uncle gave you this job? The old man was insane but he had a good heart. He wouldn’t have been able to stomach this but…then again you were barely stomaching this as it was.
When you snapped out of your thoughts you realized Yunjin had made her way from the front of your desk around to your chair. Swallowing thickly you couldn’t help but notice that the nervousness had seemingly left her body as she looked at you with lidded eyes. Every logical cell in your body was saying to do something, anything, and yet all you did was find your eyes drawn to her lips.
“Yunjin…”
“PD-nim” she interrupted you. She grabbed the arm of your chair, turning it so you could face her. “You know the girls keep talking about how handsome you are.”
“I don’t think…”
Before you could finish your sentence, Yunjin was sliding her body into your lap, straddling your legs. She straightened, pressing her lithe form against yours for a moment before sitting back onto your thighs so she could look at you. Here you had thought you were going to hear the plea of a desperate girl, now you were looking at a woman who was in complete control of what she was doing.
“Between you and me, who is your favorite?” her fingers danced along your chest, slowly unbuttoning your shirt, “You call tell me, I promise I won’t say. Is it Jimin-unnie? Or Chaewon-unnie?” She leaned close, her breath hot against your ear as she whispered you a secret, “I think you could fuck both of them if you wanted to.”
Your cock gave a guilty twitch at those words.
“Yunjin” you finally got out, finding your tongue, “This isn’t appropriate. And this isn’t how to secure your spot in the group.”
In response to you trying to put your foot down, Yunjin rolled her eyes. You opened your mouth to further chastise her only to fall short when she pulled the hem of her shirt over her head and tossed it to the ground. Her bare breasts were on display for you, puffy nipples staring you in the face as Yunjin looked down from her perch atop your lap, a smirk growing at your sudden silence.
She leaned forward, placing her arms lazily around your neck. She was so close that you could smell the perfume she wore. Did she wear that just for you? To further add to the intoxication? If you had any last words of resistance they were swallowed as Yunjin pressed her lips to yours. She took the lead, arching her body into yours as she kissed you. Her tongue ran along your bottom lip before slipping past your lips to explore your mouth. How had you ever fooled yourself into thinking this girl seemed timid when she entered your office?!
Head spinning, you tried to grasp some hold of the situation. Your hands found their way to her hips, telling yourself that you were intent on shoving her off of you. Yet somehow shoving her off turned into gripping her tighter. Yunjin moaned into your mouth approvingly, grinding her hips atop your growing erection. For a long moment that was all that existed. Slowly losing yourself in her aggressive kiss while she continued to rock her hips against yours. There was soon no denying your physical arousal, and by the way you were gripping her hips it was clear you had mentally given over to it as well.
It was Yunjin who ultimately broke the kiss, her nose brushing against yours. “PD-nim, you’re wearing too much clothes.”
As if to emphasize her point her hands moved towards your belt buckle, undoing it with deft hands before unbuttoning your pants.
“Yunjin, you know this won’t guarantee your spot right?”
Yunjin scoffed, giving you a wry look, “PD-nim you really know how to talk to a lady you know that?” her fingers fished your cock out of your boxers, giving the girthy meat a squeeze that caused you to grip her tight she might bruise. “And you really shouldn’t say things you don’t mean.”
Her cockiness might’ve been infuriating in any other circumstance. In this case, however, when she was holding the evidence of her ability in her hand there was little point in maintaining a stern facade. Seeing the resignation on your face a devilish smile spread across Yunjin’s features. She slowly stroked your cock, pre-cum already dripping from the tip. You should’ve been more ashamed than you were. In truth you wanted more.
It seemed so did Yunjin, she sat up slightly, beginning to move herself atop your length when there was a sudden knock at your door.
“Are you busy?”
“That’s Jessica,” you blurted out in a hushed whisper.
It only lasted a second but you could have sworn you saw a look of panic on Yunjin’s face. A moment of chaos ensued ultimately ending up with Yunjin being stuffed topless under your desk with your hard cock still out but hidden from view.
“Kind of,” you called back. “What did you need?”
“Can I come in? It’s easier to talk about it in person.”
You glanced down under the desk to see Yunjin who had already taken to sucking on your cock like a lollipop despite the situation you were currently in. This girl. And where was her shirt?! You briefly looked around, spotting it and tried to drag it out of site with your foot.
“Uh, sure. Y-yeah, come in.”
Jessica entered, dressed in a form fitting pant suit. She never failed to dress to kill, though for the first time your attention was far from focused on your co-worker.
“What’s –” you paused, clearing your throat when you felt Yunjin start to fondle your balls, “What’s up?”
“I was just thinking about the evaluations earlier…”
Oh fuck. She wants to talk about something serious? Now of all times?! Admittedly, Jessica didn’t know you were currently getting a blowjob under your desk but her timing couldn’t be worse. It also didn’t help that Yunjin was still technically one of the trainees being evaluated. Maybe you could talk your way out of it before you lost it entirely.
“Oh? I thought they went well” you feigned.
Jessica fixed you with a look that might’ve been the most judgemental look you had received in your life. And honestly, given what was going on you probably deserved it. “That’s only because you don’t know the girls. A lot of them don’t usually perform that poorly. I think we may have rushed the evaluations a little too soon.”
“Are you sure you’re not,” you swallowed a swear and a moan, “...just too close to the situation?”
“No, I’m not –” she paused to gain her composure. “They are good enough to make it into the group. Yunjin especially is talented.”
As if on cue, Yunjin began to deep-throat your cock. She took it all the way, your cock poking her throat as she pressed her face into your groin. On what hand you wondered why she was being so risky. On the other hand – good god.
“Oh, I’m sure she is,” you breathed out. “So what…what are you suggesting we do?”
Maintaining eye contact with Jessica was getting harder and harder, so you were almost grateful when she started pacing back and forth.
“I don’t know. Maybe push evaluations back a bit? Give the girls some time to get comfortable with the new situation? It’d also give you more time to settle in.”
Yunjin’s tongue ran along the thick vein on the underside of your cock as she slowly pulled it out of her mouth. Careful to make as little noise as possible while utterly torturing you to the utmost extent. She began to swirl her tongue around it, from the sensitive tip all the way down the base. You knew you had to get Jessica out of there immediately if she kept this up.
“Y-yeah that sounds good. Let’s do that” you stuttered.
“Really?”
“Yes! I trust your judgment.”
Jessica, usually so cool and professional, cracked a rare smile. “Great! I’ll go let the girls know.”.
Fortunately, she seemed too pleased to comment on your distressed expression, instead hurrying out the door. Almost simultaneous with the sound of the door closing, Yunjin began to vulgarly suck your cock. She was intent on draining every drop from you as she massaged your balls, coaxing your release to shoot out. You were completely at her mercy as you gripped your desk, trying not to cry out as you looked down at her. When she looked up at you with a wide-eyed stare, her mouth firmly secured around your cock, it was over for you.
“Fuck!”
You grunted as your peak hit. Rope after rope of cum filled her mouth yet she didn’t pull off once. In fact, Yunjin didn’t spill a single drop. When she did finally pull her mouth off your cock, she made sure to suck it clean before finally swallowing and looking up at you with a smirk.
“PD-nim, I think my vocals will be a lot better next time now.”
Fuck. What had you just gotten yourself into.

“You don’t have to hide it from me, y’know?” Noah says, his hair falling over his eyes, hand gently placed on your waist as he smiles down at you, “I know how you feel about him.”
“What?”
“Vinny. I’ve seen the way you look at him, it’s okay if you’re in love with him, that’s why I’ve told him to meet us here.”
“Huh?” You laugh, "I'm not in love-"
“Look, he’s on his way.”
You look up and see Vinny walking towards the both of you, something looked different about him, but he was definitely still him.
“So you finally made your decision.” Vin smiles, a sparkle was in his eye that you had never seen before.
“What decision?” You didn't understand what was going on.
“You agreed.” Said Noah, his thumb drawing circles on your hip.
“To what?” You asked.
“I wasn’t too sure at first when Noah suggested it, baby,” Vinny began, “But the more I thought about it, the more I realised I wanted it.”
It finally clicked, and you understood why the both of them were here. A rush of excitement rushed through you, adreneline in your veins as you look between the two men in front of you. Your lips crashed into Vin’s as Noah’s found your neck, you’d had this thought many times before, but you never thought it would actually happen.
“God, I need you both,” you moan, feeling Vinny’s- or was it Noah’s hand cupping your breast, as the others' hand came down to your ass, “Please…”
“What do you think? Should we play nice?” Noah asked Vinny, who nodded his head.
"I think she deserves it."
"Please..." You whimpered, feeling Noah's hot breath tickle your ear as he whispered,
"Get on your knees, princess. Vin's being too kind, I think you need to earn it."
You dropped to your knees in front of Vinny, palming him over his joggers, the ache between your thighs was becoming unbearable as you tugged Vin's boxers down.
“Y/n.” You heard Vin pant as you took him in your mouth, your tongue dancing over his tip before you take him down your throat, Noah's voice whispering praises as he plays with your hair, “y/n…”
“Y/n! Rise and shine!” Vinny shouted, waking you from your nap.
“What the fuck, Vin!” You groaned, rubbing your eyes, “You just woke me up from the best dream I’ve had in years.”
“Oh yeah?” He smirked, “was I in it?”
“You wish.” You groaned, sitting up to stretch your arms, ignoring how your underwear felt slightly damp as you moved, making you feel rather uncomfortable. “What are you doing here anyway?”
“I broke my charger and Jolly’s letting me borrow his. Which one’s his bunk?”
“The one on top of mine.”
“Thanks.” He looks, and then freezes. He stands there in silence for a moment. You panicked internally, wondering if you were moaning his name in your sleep, “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure, I guess.” You say, reaching around to see where you left your phone when you fell asleep to hide the redness of your cheeks.
“It’s going to sound insane.”
“Of course, it’s coming from you.” You smirk.
“Y/n, I’m serious.”
“Okay, sorry. Ask away.” You wondered what could be that serious.
“It’s my parent’s 40th wedding anniversary this weekend and they’re having a party, they're renewing their vows...”
“Okay…” You expected him to ask you for help to re-dye his hair or to find something to wear or-
“The thing is... My parents think I have a girlfriend, I’ve never told them I do or don’t, but they’re expecting me to bring someone. I, uh, wanted to ask you because,” you’d never seen Vinny look this nervous in the entire month that you’ve known him, “Well, I thought maybe you could bring your camera, I could tell them my ‘girlfriend’ is a photographer. I’ll make sure I tell them that we’ve broken up next week so they don’t keep asking about you or asking about our plans for the future or-”
"So you want me to be your imaginary girlfriend."
"No- Well, I mean it's not like, I mean you won't-"
“Vinny, it's okay,” you smile, “I’ll do it. I don’t know how I’ll explain it to the rest of the guys-”
“If any of them ask I’ll tell them you’re coming with me just as a photographer, I’ve already thought this through.”
“Wow,” you chuckle, surprised he'd really thought about this, “You certainly have.”
“So you’ll definitely come with me?” He asked, “I think my dad might be calling me later so I’ll let him know.”
“What kind of friend would I be if I said no,” you gave him an innocent smile, “Tell Mr Mauro I said hello.”
“Oh, I was just coming to wake you up.” You hear Noah’s voice, “We’ve checked into our rooms, I’m so glad we’re here for the next few days, I have so much work to get done.” He sighed, reaching for his laptop that he left in his bunk.
“Vin’s just told me his parents are having an anniversary party this weekend and they’ve asked me to be their photographer, isn’t that right, Vin?”
“Yeah," Vin scratches the back of his neck, "They’ve seen some of the pictures y/n's taken from the last few weeks and asked if she was free this weekend. It’s on Saturday night so we’ll stay there and come back on Sunday.”
“Oh that’s great,” Noah smiled, rubbing your shoulder, and all of a sudden seeing Noah and Vin both stood over you, you got a flashback to your dream. “And there you were weeks ago worrying you wouldn’t get booked.” You smiled back at him, agreeing.
"Anyway that's all I had to say," Vin smiled, spotting Jolly's phone charger. You had to look away as he reached up to Jolly's bunk, his sweater raising and exposing the trail of hair below his belly button- "See you guys!"
"Bye Vin." You give him a little wave as he walked off.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
Once you’ve checked into your room and searched through your suitcase you realised you didn’t really have anything to wear for this type of occasion. You had party outfits, casual outfits, but nothing you could imagine wearing for an anniversary party.
You sent a text to Angela asking if she was busy in the next couple of days and wanted to go shopping with you, you knew her schedule and knew she had nothing going on during your guys' break. It was currently Thursday, and the party was on Saturday night, meaning you and Vinny would have to leave in the morning or the night before to make it to his parent's town in time.
Whilst you were sat on your bed looking online for outfit inspiration, you heard a knock at your door. You throw your phone down on the bed and get up to see who was disturbing you.
“Everything okay?” You ask, letting him in.
“Yeah, I just wanted to see you.” He smiled, shutting the door behind himself.
“You see me pretty much everyday, Noah.” You laughed, sitting back down on your bed.
“Yeah, but like you pointed out the other day, the only time we ever get to spend together alone is when you’re under me or pushed against a wall.” He chuckles, sitting with you, his back against the headboard. “I don’t remember the last time we had a proper conversation.”
“You warned me about how busy the tour life is, this just proves it, doesn't it?” You smiled, “I still can’t believe this past month has been real. I’ll never be able to repay Bryan or you guys for this.”
“I can think of a few ways you can repay me.” Noah smirks, and you shake your head.
“I thought you wanted to spend time with me without-”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m sorry.” He held his hands up, thinking of a way to change the topic. “I don’t know if I ever asked you how you and Bryan met?”
“Through the photography club at school,” you explain, “I changed schools when I had just turned 14 and I had no friends, we had just moved to a new town, so at lunch I spent my time in the art classrooms and it just so happened they were starting a photography club in the class I’d go to. I wasn’t even that into photography or anything, but that's where I met Bryan. He was quite new to the school too and only had a handful of friends, so everyone who already had their friendship groups would sit together and because we didn’t have anyone we were just put together on a separate table. So over the weeks we finally started talking to each other, and realised we had a lot in common, then we just became best friends from there.” You smiled at the memory, wondering if Bryan still remembered it as clearly as you.
“It’s weird to think if that never happened you wouldn’t be here right now.” He said, “So you didn’t even want to get into photography?”
“No,” you laughed, “I guess it just sort of happened.”
“I’m glad it happened,” he smiled, “And I’m glad you’re here.”
As you looked into his eyes, you felt nothing but pure guilt. How could you not tell him about you and Vinny? You were sure he was feeling more for you than he’d let on, and you were about to go to a party with Vinny and pretend to be his girlfriend.
“Noah, look... There’s something I need to tell you.”
*Buzz buzz*
“Shit sorry I really need to take this-” Noah reached for his phone, answering it and rushing to leave your room.
You couldn’t say you didn’t try.
You groaned as he left, reaching for your phone to see if Angela’s replied to your texts yet.
“Ooh what kind of party are you going to ;)”
“I’m not doing anything this afternoon, I could come and pick you up if you want x”
You thought for a moment before you replied to her. You knew whatever Noah’s call was about was probably important, but there’s been countless times where he’s prioritised other things over you.
“I’m ready when you are x” You replied, leaving your phone on the bed as you went to find a hoodie and a pair of shoes, and then your door knocked again.
“I’m so sorry that was one of the guys from our record label asking about-”
“Angela’s coming to pick me up in a minute so I’ve gotta go, sorry Noah.” You snapped, not even bothering to look at him as you walk out of your room, shutting the door behind you and beginning to walk away.
“Y/n? Have I done something?” Noah asked, shaking his head in confusion. You stop in your tracks, thinking before you open your mouth.
“Every time I get a chance to spend time with you, or try to talk to you about something serious, something always comes up. I know things like this are out of your control but it happens too often and it pisses me off.”
“Like when?”
“Like when we’re occupied in bed and you suddenly get a call and you leave me laying there to answer it, like when we make plans and you’ve just so happened to forget you had an interview to do, or when we’re out and you see someone you know and you forget I’m even there. I don’t feel seen with you, Noah.”
“I’m not being funny, y/n, but we aren’t even together. To put it harshly, you always knew the band comes first, and if I remember right you just wanted casual sex, no actual relationship. So why does it bother you so much?”
Your jaw drops in disbelief at his words, he really went there.
“So I don’t mean anything to you?” Your heart was racing in your chest, you felt sick, angry and upset.
“I never fucking said that, did I?”
“You don’t need to say it, I know where I stand with you, Noah.” You argue, and other hotel guests slow down as they walk past, clearly trying to listen in on what’s happening.
“Can we not do this here?” Noah hisses.
“Good idea. I’ll see you later, Noah. I’m going out with Angela, because she cares about me, to buy a dress to wear to Vin’s family party because guess what, I bet on anything that he cares about me a whole lot more than you do.”
“You don’t know how I feel about you, y/n.” Noah says, the sound of defeat in his voice.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I’ll see you later, y/n!” He mocks, walking in the opposite direction to you.
“Noah? What the fuck!”
He didn’t answer, he didn’t even bother to look at you.
You groaned, trying not to cry from the frustration, and made your way through the hotel to wait for Angela to pick you up.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
“So… What’s the occasion? You never told me when I asked.” Angela asked as you both searched through racks of clothes.
“Vinny invited me to his parent’s anniversary party.”
“Oh… So not anything slutty, okay…” She giggled.
“But get this, he told me that his parents think he has a girlfriend, he’s never told him that does or doesn’t, so he wants me to pretend to be his girlfriend for the night.”
“Well that’s a Vinny lie if I’ve ever heard one.”
“What?”
“He totally just said that to get you to go with him so he can show you off. He’s really close with his family, there’s no way they would think he’s dating someone if he hasn’t said he is.”
“Well we’ll see about that then,” you smirk, “But what if I do want to pretend to be his girlfriend for the night, that would definitely piss Noah off.”
“Oh... What’s he done now?” Angela stops looking and turns to you, her hand on her hip.
“Nothing, yet everything, he’s just really annoyed me." You sigh, "He turns up to my room to spend time with me but then he gets a call and he runs out, it’s not like I don’t know his business, surely he should be able to take work calls around me.”
“It sounds like he doesn’t trust you…” She frowned.
“Exactly!”
“Oh my god y/n look!” She pulls out a gorgeous red dress, making you gasp, “Try it on! Try it on!” You claps, handing it over to you.
“I don’t know if red’s my colour…”
“That's even more of a reason for you to try it on and see if it is!” She smirks, “...But I do know it’s Vin’s favourite colour.”
You give her a look, before taking it and heading to the changing rooms to try it on.
“I think it’s a little tight…” You say as you walk out, and Angela’s jaw drops as you do a little twirl, “What do you think?”
“I think you're the most gorgeous girl ever!" She grins, "And I think Vinny's going to ask you to be his girlfriend for real when he sees this.” She suddenly gasps, giving you a serious look as she hands you your phone back. “Send a picture to Noah.”
“Why? He thinks I’m only going as a photographer.”
“What?”
“Vin came up with the plan to tell the guys I was only invited because his parents wanted a photographer, I thought it was a pretty good lie.”
“Vinny came up with that one didn’t he,” she laughed, “I guess they’ll believe it though.”
“Noah did.” You check yourself out in the mirror, and eventually pull your phone out from your bag and take a couple pictures in the mirror. You’d think about whether it was a good idea to send them or not as you shopped for a new pair of shoes.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
“It’s actually pretty fortunate for you that there aren’t any shows this week,” you say as Vinny drives, “Did you plan the tour around this?”
“Kinda,” he says, looking over his shoulder as he turns onto his road, you wish you knew how he even made driving look so hot, “It's the longest tour we've done and knew we needed a break each month so we don’t all completely burn out, and it just so happened this weekend was during that break.”
Vinny thought it would be a good idea to hire a car from the city the guys were staying in for their break from tour to drive back to his house so the two of you could stay there for the night before taking his car and driving down to his parents town tomorrow.
“I don’t think my roommate’s here at the moment.” He says as he pulls up, parking the car in his driveway.
“Not that it matters,” you chuckle, checking your phone. You had sent the pictures to Noah yesterday, but you hadn’t heard from him since, he hadn’t even seen the messages. “What time have we got to leave tomorrow?”
“Probably around 12.” He says, getting out of the car and unlocking the door.
You smiled as you walked into his house, it was just how you’d pictured it. Framed awards on the walls and tour posters, a massive tv on the wall and a bong that he made sure to clarify was his roomate's. You turn around to see him bringing both yours and his suitcase in from the car, rather surprised by his strength as you see him carry them both up the steps to his porch with ease.
“Your house is so cute.” You smile, and by his reaction, he seemed rather offended.
“Cute?” He raised his eyebrows, as if to say 'seriously?' “Y/n I’m a guy…I live here with a guy… Our house is not cute!”
“Then how would you describe it?” You chuckle as he shuts the door behind him.
“I don’t know… Manly? Homely?"
You rolled your eyes, watching Vin put the keys away before he insisted on giving you a house tour, showing you around room by room.
“And this is where the magic happens!” He opens the door to the basement, putting his arm out as if to say ‘ladies first!’
“Do you know how creepy that sounds?” You laugh, slowly descending the staircase to his basement.
“This is where my drums are, I do my drum streams down here-”
“Can you give me a private show?” You gasped, but to your disappointment Vinny laughed and shook his head.
“I’ve been playing basically every other night for the last month! Surely you’ve heard enough.”
“Please?” You plead, watching as he tries to hide the smile on his face.
“Maybe later.” He gives in, walking you back up the stairs to his kitchen after showing you around the room.
“Can I request a song?”
“Depends,” he says, shutting the basement door, “Do I know it?”
“How am I supposed to know what you know, or don’t?”
“What is it?” He asked, reaching into his fridge, pulling out a sprite. “Want a drink?”
“Yes please,” you smiled, “I heard you played ‘somebody told me’ the night I wasn’t feeling well and stayed on the bus and you haven't played it again after…”
“So you want me to play it for you?” He asked, handing you a drink.
“Please? I’m coming to your parents’ anniversary party as your fake girlfriend, don’t you think you owe me something?”
“You’ve got a point there,” he acknowledges, “I need to shower first and pack for the weekend, but then I’ll do it.”
“Yay!” You grinned, “Can I take a shower after you?”
“Of course.” He smiled softly, “Also if you want my bed tonight I’ll sleep on the couch. I changed the sheets before I left for tour so they’re fresh-”
“I can’t kick you out of your own bedroom…” You frowned, “I’ll have the couch. I don’t care!”
“I will not let you sleep on my couch.” He chuckled, and a thought crossed your mind.
“If we were okay to share a bed the first night we met then I’m sure we’ll be okay again tonight, right?”
“If you're comfortable with that then we can.” He smiled, “I’m gonna go get in the shower, then it’ll be all yours. But in the meantime make yourself at home.”
“Thank you.” You said, watching as he left, walking up the stairs.
You made your way to his living room, getting comfy on the couch and scrolling through your phone. You tried not to think about Noah, but you couldn't help but wish he'd text you back. Whilst Vin was in the shower you considered calling him, but you didn't want to come across clingy. Maybe he just needed to calm down.
"I left my fucking shampoo in my bag." You heard Vinny laugh as he ran down the stairs, a white towel wrapped around his hips as he threw his suitcase onto the sofa beside you and searched through it.
You took a deep breath to calm your mind as you tried to be respectful, but you couldn't help but look at him. His wet curls, his bare chest, the bracelet on his wrist, the veins on his arms... You blinked, trying to concentrate on your phone but he definitely seemed to notice you staring, smirking before he walked back up the stairs.
You already knew it was going to be a long weekend.

AITA for reporting my neighbor to the police and getting him evicted for trying to poison my chickens?
I know that question sounds insane but bare with me. I (F30) live next to my landlord (F60s?) and my neighbor (M30s). I have 3 hens that I keep as pets and for fresh eggs.
I have my landlords written permission and follow all city ordinances (so no roosters, no more than 6 hens, built the coop away from houses, have a permit from the city, etc.)
They are in my yard in a fenced in run with a coop. I made sure to get a breed that's very quiet and docile so as not to bother neighbors, but whenever new people move in, I still go introduce myself, let them know I have hens, and then ask them if they want fresh eggs.
When I asked my new neighbor, he looked disgusted and said "I don't want shit from dirty ass barn animals"
Uh, okay. I told him that I was sorry for bothering him and to have a good day. He said "Whatever" and then closed the door.
A week later, I get a knock on my front door and open it. It's someone who works for animal control telling me that they've received a noise complaint.
At first I thought it was for my dog, who's a chihuahua mix, because he was barking VERY loudly at a squirrel the other day. Nope, it was the chickens. The guy said that someone reported roosters crowing.
I do not have roosters. My chickens are 2 years old so I'm 100% sure that they're hens and not roosters.
I invite him in, take him into the yard, and show him the chickens. I show him where their coop is, show him that I keep all of their food in secure containers to prevent mice and rats, I show him my license number, etc. At this point he's confused, because my chickens are very quiet and I clearly have no roosters.
Every time I saw the neighbor, he was usually hanging out with friends, and as soon as he noticed me he would immediately start complaining about my chickens. Talking about how barn animals are nasty, chickens are loud and stinky and gross, how they're only good for eating, etc. Basically the usual "You have prey animals as pets so I'm going to joke about killing and eating them".
I ignored him, and whenever I did see him I would smile and say hello, ask how he's doing, etc. which he ignored.
One morning I came out into my yard to let the hens out for the day, and saw something in their run. At first I thought it was some kind of weird, fucked up mushroom, but I looked closer and realized it was a piece of bread that was a bluish green color.
I looked up, because my chickens run is fenced in and covered in aviary netting, and realized that there was a huge cut in the netting. I went back inside, grabbed a plastic ziploc bag and gloves, put the bread in it, and then got a shovel to dig out the dirt that the bread was sitting on just in case.
I wasn't sure where to go, so I took it to my vet and showed one of the vet techs. He looked concerned, asked if any pets ate it, and then took it back to show one of the vets.
He came back out and told me that it looked like it had been covered in rat poison, and I told him that the aviary netting was cut, and this was in my yard. He told me to go to the police and make a report because it was 100% someone intentionally trying to poison my chickens/dog.
Before doing that, I went home, and checked my cameras. I have them up in the corner of the birds run facing their coop, so that if anything ever happened to them (we have lots of raccoons) I would be able to see.
I saw my neighbor climb up (I'm assuming on a step ladder), use a knife to cut the netting, and throw the bread into the yard. I took the video and piece of bread to the police, and filed a report.
I told them yes, I know, it's just chickens, but they're my pets and I also have a dog that could have eaten it (he goes into the coops with me). I love my chickens, all of them have names and I take them to a vet if they ever get sick, so to me they're more than livestock.
Cops are useless and I figured they wouldn't do anything, so I also told my landlord about it. I showed her a copy of the video that I saved, and she was horrified and told me she would take care of it immediately.
I'm not sure if the cops ever did their jobs, but he was gone a week later. My landlord apologized profusely for the trouble and I said it was fine, she had no way of knowing.
I thought I was justified in what I did, since I literally caught this guy on camera throwing poison into my yard for my pets to eat (and then slowly die of internal bleeding).
But I mentioned it to an IRL friend (F28) through text (she's out of town) and she was FURIOUS. She asked me wtf I was doing, ACAB, etc. and basically said "Isn't your neighbor black? How would you have felt if the cops showed up and shot him over some stupid birds?"
I told her that I went to the cops because my vet told me to, and just because he's black doesn't give him an excuse to poison peoples animals for no fucking reason.
I also reminded her that the cops in our town are useless and since no animals were actually poisoned, they probably wouldn't even get off their asses to go talk to him.
For context: One time someone got HIT BY A CAR 10 minutes away from the police station. It took them 20 minutes to get there.
She told me I was a racist bootlicker and a cracker... She's white and I'm mixed race (my dad is Colombian) so like... lol. lmao even.

SMUT UNDER CUT MDNI
"Bam!" You place the plate of cookies down with a wide smile. "They're a little over done but I don't think it should matter..." You lift one up and inspect it, "probably just a little crunchy!"
Wooyoung turns with the drink mixer in his hands, leaning over the table and looking at the cookies. "They look good, Baby. How much did you put?"
You grab the messy paper where you've written down the recipe. "Two teaspoons. That's not a lot, right?"
"Sounds reasonable to me," he shrugs before shaking the drink around. You turn into the kitchen and grab two paper towels, placing a cookie on each and sliding one over to him. He pours the concoction equally into two glasses he's already set up. "My lady." He smiles as he slide the glass to you.
"Thank youuu." You sniff the drink, recoiling and holding a hand over your mouth to hide the laugh that threatens to come out.
"What? What is it?"
"How much gin did you put in here, Babe?"
He shrugs, looking at the bottle that's now half empty. "Not a lot."
"Maybe you should stick to the kitchen, and I stick to the drinks."
"Yeah, no, you're right."
He slides his cookie back over the table to sit next to you, taking his drink with him. You pick up the warm cookie and share a kiss with him before you take a bite.
You make small conversation as you each finish a cookie and your very strong drinks. You lean over and rest your head on his shoulder, and he cranes his neck to kiss the top of your head.
"You feel anything, Baby?"
"No. You?"
"Nada. Maybe we got a dud or something."
--
"Holy fuck!" He cries, hands tightening on your hips as you grind down on him. "S'good! Fuck me so good! So good," he moans like a prayer. He leans his head back with a whimper as he cums into you again. It makes you cum around him in response, leaning into his neck and licking up his sweat.
You've been at it for at least two hours, and neither of you can stop. He's came into your cunt at least five times, and you've gushed around him six? Seven? Your brain has turned to mush at this point. All you can think is Wooyoung. Wooyoungs dick. Wooyoungs hands grabbing at your tits.
"Baby, please!" He whimpers, hands massaging your skin. "Keep going, keep going, please, please, fuck me, fuck me," he whines like a broken record, hip's barely bucking up into you to meet your harsh bounces. "Please, I need it!"
All he can think is you. Your warm cunt filled with cum still around him. Your sweet praises. Your fingers tweaking his sore nipples. Your tongue rolling over them.
You slap one of your hands over his mouth and tell him, "then take it."
His hands travel down to your hips and flips you over, holding your hips down as your body bounces with the force of his thrusts. "You take it. I'm going to fuck you so full you can't fucking think."
"God, Woo! You're- fuck... holy shit, Love. You're so good, so good to me! Fuck me so good!" He brings his hand down to your clit and has you cumming again just at the contact alone, fucking you right into another one with his erratic thrusts and his finger twirling around. "Baby, cum..." You don't know whether you're asking him to cum or telling him you just did, but it's all that your mind can muster up.
He flips you over again, holding your hips down to his as close as he can as he over-fills your pussy. You pull up off him and cum drips out of you onto his hard cock. You both moan at the sight, worked up beyond belief. He's about to wipe it up when you swat away his hand and scoot down, leaving a trial of cum drops as you make your way down. "What are you doing, Baby? Keep going, please keep going!"
"Calm down, Baby Boy." You lick up some of the puddle on his lower stomach, savoring the flavor as your swallow. He has to physically hold himself back from releasing again at the sight. "Gonna kiss it off you."
He groans loudly, hand wrapping itself up in yours as you begin kissing and licking all over his stomach and pelvis. When he's both clean and painfully hard, you lower yourself down even more to his cock. "Want me too, Babe?"
"Yes," he breaths heavily, whining as you lower your mouth down on his jizz covered cock. "Ha~" he holds down his hips with his free hand, squeezing yours tightly in the other. "Fucking amazing, Baby. I'm gonna cum... I'm gonna-"
You scoop it up on your tongue and are back on him in the next second, settling on his cock, still hard, and connecting your mouths as you hold his open. He laps up your tongue, moaning into your open mouthed kiss as he swallows up the cum you've collected. You cradle his face as you pull away and admire the sight.
His eyes are almost fully black, unblinking as he admires you like you do to him. His mouth is slick and swollen and glazed in cum- yours, his, it's impossible to tell.
"So beautiful," you chime together. "Oop-" he laughs, leaning into your shoulder as you lay ontop of him in laughter. He slides his hands up and down your back, leaving a few kisses to your sweaty skin.
"Ready for another round, Beautiful?"

New Experiences (18+)
Tumblr media
Hello lovelies,
Long time, no posts. I hope you're all well and have had a great start to the new year! I haven't written in a long time so wanted to get back into it. I have a few one shots to post and a new series! I'm pretty sure my engagement on this platform is going to be awful but I really don't want to start fresh when I've posted so much work on here. Enough rambling for now though!
This is just a little NYE piece to get back into the swing of things.
18+ only. Minors DNI.
Content warnings: Smut with no plot, first time male receiving head, alcohol consumption (I think that's all).
Bucky Barnes x Female reader
Tumblr media
The top floor of the Avengers Tower was booming with people. The New Years party was in full swing and the clock was slowly ticking. Bucky was currently sitting at the bar with a cold beer in hand. He hated parties but the team insisted he come, reminding him that he would just feel low being locked in his room alone.
His eyes caught yours across the room and you found yourself wandering over to him. “C’mon Buck, give me a smile” you sent him a cheeky grin of your own and placed your champagne glass on the bar beside his beer.
You had always had a special connection with Bucky. You were the only one in the tower apart from Sam and Steve who Bucky felt truly comfortable around. You regularly had movie nights and you introduced him to a lot of the modern ways of living. More recently Bucky was struggling to just be your friend, but dating was so much more complicated now and it was driving him insane. He couldn’t get you off his mind.
The corner of Bucky's lips immediately turned up and a small smile graced his usually grumpy face. You caught his eye the second you entered the tower. You were gorgeous and his jaw almost dropped seeing you in the little white dress you had picked to wear tonight. It hugged every curve of your body and Bucky couldn't help but let his eyes wander over every dip and bump that the dress hugged.
“There it is” you giggled as he sent you a shy smile. You engaged in small talk for a little bit before the countdown caught your eye. “Quickly Buck, we need to find you a new year's kiss!” you hopped down from your seat at the bar and took his hand in yours.
“Woah there, I didn’t agree to that” Bucky’s body barely moved an inch and he swiftly pulled you back into his side.
“C’mon it’s tradition” your eyes peeked up at him through your lashes as the clock counted down the last two minutes of the year.
“Who’s your kiss?” he asked, leaning into your ear as the noise level in the room raised with excitement.
“I..I don’t have one. You were suddenly aware of how close you were to Bucky. His metal hand rested on your waist and his face was awfully close to your own.
Ten…nine… The countdown began and Bucky’s eyes met yours. “I guess you’re stuck with me then”.
Three
Oh my god, Bucky was going to kiss you.
Two
The same Bucky who you had a crush on for months.
One
Bucky was finally kissing the girl of his dreams.
Happy New Year!
The tower erupted in cheers, confetti poured down from the ceiling and the sounds of party blowers echoed throughout.
Bucky's lips gently landed on yours, gently pecking your lips before his hand moved to the back of your neck and pulled you in closer.
“God you’re perfect” he groaned as he pulled away. A deep red blush coated your cheeks.
“Kiss me again Buck”, it came out as a whisper but Bucky heard. A cocky smirk took over his features as Bucky leaned in again. The kiss was deeper this time, less gentle and a little more rushed.
“Go Tinman!!” Sam hollered from across the bar and Bucky pulled away. Glaring at his friend, he flipped Sam off and took your hand in his, guiding you to the elevator.
“Sorry, I..uh thought we could go for a wal..” Buck’s sentence was cut short by you wrapping your arms around his neck and pulling him down into a kiss.
His hands wrapped around your thighs and pulled you up into his embrace. The kiss was messy, all tongue as the elevator rode down to his floor.
“Fuck” he groaned out as your hips bucked gently against him. The ding of the elevator signalled that you had arrived at Bucky's floor and he expertly managed to walk you both to his bedroom without breaking the kiss.
He sat on the edge of the bed with you on his lap, his lips trailing down your jaw and neck. Your hands moved to unbutton the dress shirt he wore and his hands found their way to the zip of your dress.
“Wow”, Bucky paused the kiss to take in your upper half as the dress bunched at your waist. His hands immediately started to play with your tits. His fingers gently rolling the buds between his fingers. “God, you’re perfect, you know that…getting me so hard” his lips were back on your neck, gently nipping at your collarbone. “Can you feel that sweetheart? Feel how hard you make me?” his hands moved to grind your hips against his growing bulge and his lips wrapped around your nipple.
“Fuck Buck” your back arched into him as your hips started to grind harder against him.
He lifted you up with ease, pulling your dress down and unbuckled his belt. As he moved to take off his pants, you started to trail kisses down his chest and stomach before dropping onto your knees.
“Your lips feel like heaven sweetheart” Bucky groaned as your lips wrapped around the head of his cock. “Oh my god, fuck” Buckys hands wrapped around your hair. You slowly started to bob your head up and down his shaft. “Jeez sweetheart, n…no one’s ev..ever done this before”. Your eyes widened at his admission and he chuckled at the reaction. “I think it’s a modern thing”.
You sent him a cheeky wink and hollowed your cheeks, taking him further down your throat, desperate to hear the noises he makes again. “Oh fuck, feels so good sweetheart…your mouth his heaven…oh..oh fuck…’m close.. Slow…slow down sweetheart gonna make me, Fuck”.
You pulled back off his cock and ran your tongue up and down his shaft. “You’re gonna be the death of me” Bucky groaned out as he watched your hand disappear under your panties before wrapping your lips around his cock again.
This time Bucky's hips gently rocked into your mouth, careful not to force too much of his cock at once. “Fuck sweetheart, I can hear that little pussy, fuckkkk… can hear how wet you are. You like sucking my cock? You like making me feel good?”.
Your moans vibrated against his cock and Bucky could feel his legs shake at how good you made him feel. He watched the way your hand gradually worked faster against his clit and he could feel your movements getting sloppier as your eyes glazed over.
“You gonna cum sweetheart? Gonna cum all over your hand while you suck my cock?” his high was getting closer and the hazy look that filled your eyes tipped him over the edge. His cum filled your mouth and he watched as you shook as you came on your fingers.
“Good girl” he praised before lifting you and laying you on the bed. He gently placed his lips on yours before slowly kissing his way down your body “God, I can’t wait to taste you sweetheart…”

chapter warnings: joking implications of killing someone , written part isn't proof read n very dialogue heavy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
written part under the cut (749 words)
you're considering turning around and making a stop at chaehyun's house to make her regret whatever she planned – maybe include taerae in it too since he's clearly her accomplice in all of this. seriously, what on god's green earth were they thinking?
keyword, considering.
something is telling you this is an opportunity you can't pass on, it's now or never, and the way hanbin looks up from his phone and directly at you almost at the same time as you do is the confirmation you needed.
you don't know where all your insecurities about your feelings not being reciprocated went, but as you walk up to him you find out you it doesn't feel bad, being confident about hanbin feeling the same for once.
"hi," no, nevermind, there goes all your confidence, disappeared into thin air once you make eye contact with hanbin.
"hi, yn," he smiles, the same way he always does, but for some reason it feels different "so i guess we both got caught up in whatever our friends planned?"
"i guess, yeah," a few seconds of awkward silence pass. you have to save this conversation before it ends up where all the conversations between you two end up: nowhere. "so? what do you want to do?"
"well, i was supposed to meet up with hao, but we didn't really have any plans on what exactly to do… i guess the same was with you and chaehyun?" you nod "that mother fucker, once i get her i'm going to- sorry, that's not the point, i always get sidetracked…"
"that's why i like you,"
your eyes widen. did you hear that right?
"what?" hanbin seems as confused as you "what?"
oh, so he didn't actually say that. you're hallucinating too, now? chaehyun gave you the number of that psychiatrist, maybe you should contact them…
"nothing, i thought you said something. do you want to get ice cream?" it's the first idea that comes to your mind, you don't even mentally beat yourself up for how lame it is, anything is fine as long as you stop standing there.
surprisingly, almost all the awkwardness between you two slowly goes away. spending time with hanbin outside of school and your student council duties is fun, time goes by quickly, and before you know it you've already bought your ice cream and sat down on a bench nearby.
"what flavor did you get?" hanbin asks.
"strawberry," it's pretty obvious, the vibrant (and a bit too artificial) pink of the ice cream should give it away easily, why would he even ask?
"can i try it?" you nod your head, standing up "i'll go ask if they have one of those stupid plastic spoons they have at ice cream places,"
"why?"
"uh, i mean, unless you want us to indirectly kiss or something, that's our only option,"
"mh… right, we should probably avoid indirect kisses..." before you can start walking away, he grabs your wrist, making you sit down again. "hanbin what…?"
"how about a direct kiss instead?"
okay now you've completely gone insane. there's no way in hell sung hanbin, your lifelong crush sung hanbin just said he wants to kiss you. no way.
"yn?" then why is he looking at you like he's waiting for an answer?
you know what, fuck it. maybe you're delusional, maybe you're hallucinating, maybe it's a dream. you're still not missing the opportunity to kiss someone you've had a crush on since middle school.
"yeah, a direct kiss sounds great, actually."
all the times hanbin has taken your breath away metaphorically, with something he did or said, could never compare to this one.
"so you like me too?"
"no, i just kissed you for shits and giggles," you roll your eyes "of course! i've liked you since you gave me a pencil when we were twelve!"
"oh," well, now he's going to think you're some kind of creep, great job yn! "well, that's nice. since i did that because i liked you,"
"wait, you liked me before i liked you?"
"i mean, i didn't know you had feelings for me until… today, actually. on that note," he takes his phone out of his pocket "do you know why chaehyun told me, and i quote, 'if you keep up this search for yn's crush you're going to get your feelings hurt'?"
you make a mental note to still take that detour to chae's house on your way home.

☆ SYNOPSIS: sung hanbin is everyone's dream guy: perfect grades, perfect looks, perfect personality, he has it all. he's even class AND student council president! everyone loves him, and you, as his vice-president, are no exception to that. having been in love with him since you were 12, you try to tone down your feelings "for the sake of professionalism" and claim it's simple admiration for someone who objectively has no flaws. but there is one small detail you missed, in all these years admiring him: he has an even bigger crush on you.

masterlist!
Love?
No. Insanity.
Edward can't remember where or how he first saw you, but if he had to guess, it was probably the night you moved two doors down from him.
He woke up that morning like any other day in his life. Full of bitterness and resentment for the city— his city, because it was his —outside a fog filled appartment window.
Once upon a time, it had been battered pane of glass that peojected this image to him as it did now; broken shards scattered on the dead grass outside reflecting 'GOTHAM ORPHANAGE' back to a much younger verson of him. Waking up as a child had always been such a disappointment. He used to hug himself to fitful sleep, a tiny part of him hoping he would pass in the unforgiving night like so many children before.
He didn't think that feeling of bile in the back of his throat would ever go away each time sleep was pulled from him and he woke up back in Gotham. No matter how many people promised change for the better on televisions or radios. Because Edward knew the truth.
Gotham reached out to him. It reached out to him in his dreams with its gleaming skyscrapers as hands and its screaming people as desperate pleas. Begging him to be fixed. To rid it of the scum plauging glamorous penthouses just high enough off the ground that just one push of the hand could send a sinner to his rightful death.
He thought about all of this before he had even finished brushing his teeth.
Careful hands pulled a frayed toothbrush from his mouth as Edward spit into the sink to wash his mouth out. A ratty towel swiped over his lips gently when he finished. Such a refined action for someone with a bomb built for a human neck sitting just outside his bathroom door.
It wasn't uncommon for him to get lost in the swirl of thoughts he called his conscious, but he needed to keep up appearances just long enough to carry out his plan. And that included not being late to work for the third time this month.
Eventually the knob of his appartment was being locked tightly with the end of a faux gold key — the toothbrush from earlier already drying on the edge of his sink.
He struggled with the lock for a moment more, silently cursing whoever had decided to make living on this side of town so hard, before eventually getting it with a pop.
From that point on, the sound of your voice would forever take over his mind.
Edward first noticed your smile lines. The crinkles by the sides of your eyes enticed him like a fresh baked cookie would to a child. How curious, that a person could have so much physical evidence of a happy life whilst living in this place. He wondered if you had been born here, or were new to the location. He found himself envying the thought of the latter.
The next thing he noticed about you, was that you were asking him a question for the second time in a row.
"Sorry, could you repeat that?" Edward nervously stuttered, usually steady hands fumbling to push his glasses up clumsily. Once again— or at least he thinks once again — you grin at him, holding a slightly beaten up moving box in your arms. Why he had noticed that later than the deep crinkles on your face, he wasn't sure.
"I asked if all the locks in this place were going to act like that one. Because in that case, there's no way I'm surviving a horror movie chase." You nodded with your head at his troublesome door instead of gesturing. Probably because your hands were full. Most definitely because your hands were full, actually.
Edward blinked slowly.
"Uhm, no. No no I don't think so." He supplied softly. It was a lame response to your quip. He remembered reading somewhere that first impressions forever solidified a figure in your life, whether minor or major. The thought of that made his heart beat faster.
A pregnant pause settled over the hallway. Edward felt his palms sweat. He wiped them on his pants. All it did was spread it around more.
"Well, nice to meet you." It was you that finally broke the silence. With a shuffle of one foot to the other he heard a few things clink from inside your little box. He wondered what was in it. A vase you bought for decoration? Photo phrames? China that your great grandmother left you in her will?
He stood there wondering about fucking plates for so long, that you had begun to turn your body away and make your way back down the hallways.
"Wait!" Edward lurched forward to place a stern grip on your lower arm. The look of momentary fear you gave him in that moment was enough for him to straighten his spine out.
Something about that barely concealed emotion in your eyes excited him. For a brief moment he was in a leather mask, staring at the bloody body of the mayor below him on Halloween night.
And then he was back. Looking into your eyes like they were last thing he would ever see.
"My names Edward." He released his grip on you while finally introducing himself. With his falling hand went your initial fear. "But my friends call me Eddie."
He didn't have any friends. And if he did, they certainly wouldn't call him Eddie. But the white lie was nothing compared to the way his name, both the formal and shortened verson, slipped from your lips.
"I'll remember that next time. It's very nice to meet you, neighbor."
And then you were gone, feet shuffling against stained and waterlogged carpet before disappearing into what used to be a vacant appartment.
In your wake stood Gothams soon to be savior and cleanser. A man that has committed unspeakable acts in the name of justice and planned to do even more. The very same individual that hid skeletons in his closet and so many more at the scenes of his cromes.
Somewhere in between there, Edward would have to install a camera in your bedroom.

tell me that you’re still mine

written for the #severalsunlitdaylights challenge by @ginwiz
Sounds of sleep rustled through the sixth year dormitory. Ron's rumbling snores, the groans of bedsprings as Dean rolled fitfully from one side to the next, the occasional word from a restless, mumbling Neville.
Having long since grown accustomed to having roommates, Harry was used to it all. He couldn't remember it bothering him once in six years.
Except for tonight.
Tonight every single sound grated against his ears. He'd tried pulling his curtains, draping his pillow over his ear, casting a muffliato. But then that buzzing sound aggravated him just as much.
Sleep just would not come.
And every second that passed made it harder to ignore why.
It wasn't the insignificant noises his dormmates made keeping him up. It was the argument being replayed over and over in his head, every word of it, and the image of a bright-faced, bright-haired Ginny Weasley whirling around and stomping away from him, angrier with him than she'd ever been.
Frustration and guilt mixed with his own anger in his stomach. Heaving a sigh, Harry slung his feet over the side of his bed and to the floor. He couldn't lay here all night and think about their fight. If he wasn't going to sleep he might as well start that Charms essay he'd been putting off. Or maybe he could sit in the common room and think about their fight.
Do me a favour and leave me the bloody hell alone!
He tensed up remembering the way she'd said it–not exactly a shout but loud enough to echo through his brain hours later. Another surge of emotions took over him, giving him the oddly specific urge to kick a tree. The common room was sorrowfully out of trees, so he wound up on the couch, glaring at the wall.
Nothing, Harry, there isn't a single other thing that I want from you.
What did that mean? His head fell into his hands, and he sat there, contemplating ripping his hair out, until he heard the unmistakable sound of footsteps to his right. He looked up quickly, hand flying to his wand, only to freeze at the sight of her. He felt his pulse quicken. She was loosely covered in thin pyjamas, feet bare and hair lazily pulled up–softly contrasting the fierceness of her posture.
He didn't say anything, didn't think he could if he tried, his tongue suddenly heavy in his mouth. Ginny stared back at him from the entrance to the girls' dormitories, shock and anger and stubbornness filling her gaze. He saw the moment she decided, the telltale tensing of her jaw before she stepped deeper into the room, finally breaking eye contact when she sat on the far end of the couch.
He didn't–couldn't–take his eyes off her, and she wouldn't say anything, so he watched as she did exactly what he'd been doing moments ago: trying to pick a fight with the wall.
He broke first, his patience wearing thin, finally snapping under the pressure of the tension in the room.
"Ginny," he said slowly. "What are you doing down here?"
She answered quickly, testament to the still-hot anger boiling underneath her skin. "Thought I'd come hang out in the common room, isn't that obvious?"
"In the middle of the night?"
"Yes."
"Do that often, do you?"
"All the time."
"Ginny."
"What?"
He ran his hand through his hair, a war raging inside of him–one side telling him he didn't do anything wrong, not really, and the other side reminding him that he'd handled the entire situation horribly, and would it really be worth it, losing her over this?
It wouldn't, he decided quickly, and blurted out, "Look. I'm sorry–"
"Yes, we covered that earlier, didn't we?"
His temper flared up again, and he would soon drive himself insane if he didn't just stick to one emotion.
"I am."
"Sorry for what exactly?"
"For–for–" His brain battled with the words he knew he should say.
"Exactly," she snapped at him. "Don't say things you don't mean. Don't apologise if you're not really sorry."
"I'm sorry for upsetting you!" he said earnestly.
She crossed her arms and looked away from him again. She would be almost scarily still if not for her leg, shaking mercilessly against the ground.
Anxiety and anticipation forced their way up his stomach and wrapped around his throat, choking the words out. "Look, if we're going to end things–"
"End things?" Her head swung back in his direction. "Is that what you want?"
"No! I thought that's what you–"
"Why would you think that?"
"Because!" he gestured aimlessly through the air. "We got into this stupid bloody fight!"
A variety of emotions shot out from behind her eyes, and Harry fell victim to them all.
"You know what?" she said finally, her voice steady and determined. "You're right. Maybe this isn't gonna work out."
A lot of things happened then at once–she stood up and walked away from him (again), his heart felt like it dived out his body and off the couch, his feet moved before his brain did, scrambling to get in front of her, his hands shot out and curled around her shoulders, needing her to stop moving.
"Ginny, wait," he asked desperately, deciding he'd do anything for this not to be it. It felt too easy, too soon.
"What, Harry?" For the first time she didn't sound sure. She sounded scared almost, shaky and resigned, and that gripped him as tightly as everything else.
Words, Potter, words, he thought to himself as she stared at him expectantly.
"I–why? If you weren't going to end things, then why–why wouldn't it work out?"
With a deep, resolving breath she curled her own hands around his wrists and moved them off of her, placing them back at his sides. Then she stepped away, and Harry thought his heart rate was increasing so fast it almost certainly couldn't be healthy. Because she was really doing this, this was really happening. He should have just stayed upstairs, at least delaying the inevitable. He should have prepared himself for this more. He should have known better than to think it would last at all. He should have–
"Harry." Then she took another unsettled breath, pushed her hair behind her ear. He wanted to close his eyes, thinking maybe it would hurt less if he didn't have to watch her do it, but looking away from her felt impossible. "I know…I know you…like me, or whatever, but–but I really like you, Harry. I mean, really, it's kind of embarrassing."
"I like you too, Ginny," he insisted, not understanding how they'd taken this turn, but feeling too relieved to ask. He took a small, tentative step forward. "I really, really like you."
But she was shaking her head. "It's not the same. You can't possibly like me the way I like you if all it takes is one fight for you to jump to a break up."
"I just thought–I was being a prat and an arsehole, and I thought you would come to your senses and realise that…" he trailed off, running out of words, not knowing how to finish his thought when it mattered most.
"We got into a fight, Harry!" she nearly yelled. "A stupid, solvable fight! That's what people do when they care about each other!"
"I wouldn't know!" he exclaimed, fighting to keep his voice from rising to a shouting-level. "I just–I suppose–I've never done this, had this before. And I–I wouldn't know."
Something shifted in her eyes, and he conflictingly felt both comforted and revolted by it. Comforted by the understanding and acceptance she seemed to convey, but revolted by the fact that it confirmed the pitiful fact that, in his entire life, he'd never had anyone to model what a healthy relationship would look like.
"Harry," she said again, softly this time, and it was truly pathetic the effect the sound of his name on her lips had on him. She tapered the distance between them, reaching out and twisting her fingers in his. He found he could breathe a little better after that.
Of its own accord, his head leaned down until his forehead was touching hers, and he felt her hand slip its way into his hair, tugging slightly. He kissed her, pulling her flush against him, afraid to loosen his touch, afraid to come close to losing her again.
She sighed into his mouth, pressing up to meet him, allowing him to deepen the kiss as her words rang through his mind over and over. I really like you, Harry. And he kissed her harder, until she made a small sound from the back of her throat that felt all too good and all too dangerous.
"Ginny," he whispered again as he broke the kiss, pulling her closer still, and burrowing his face into her neck.
Her fingers tightened against his hair, and he heard her mumble something about boys being stupid, and of course she had to pick the stupidest of them all.
Reluctantly, he pulled himself out of the hug so he could look at her to say, "I'm sorry for upsetting you earlier, Gin, I really am."
"No, Harry, it's okay, I probably overreacted."
"No," he protested, "I would have felt just as bad, if I'd gone up to you and you'd acted like–like an obnoxious prat and made it feel like you can't trust me."
"Do you?" she asked, ripping her gaze away. "Trust me."
"Yes," he answered with desperate fierceness. "Of course I do. It was just–I've been having these meetings with–"
Ginny, a sudden look flashing across her face, hurriedly slapped a hand over his mouth. "Don't. You don't have to tell me everything, Harry. We're both allowed to have our secrets. Merlin knows you especially, what with being the Chosen One and all that."
He hated how close she was to the truth. Hated that he had to keep this from her, hated that part of him wanted to keep it from her. He hated that he'd made it seem like he didn't trust her enough. He hated having her angry at him and hearing the hurt in her voice and hated that now she was letting him–letting him have his secrets that he needed to keep for the literal sake of the wizarding world.
"Gin–"
"Really you don't," she promised. "I just…I just felt a bit stupid because I hadn't seen you all day, so I was excited to come over and hang about with you lot, and when you just…acted all flustered and panicked and made it quite obvious that you didn't want me to know what you were talking about, I–well, I felt like a complete git because we hadn't had plans to hang out and maybe you just didn't miss me as much as I missed you. Or at least weren't very happy to see me. So I went mental and bit your head off and you didn't deserve all that."
"I did bloody well deserve it," he corrected before he barrelled on. "But, Gin, I want you to know that I really do trust you. It was just…Before you, I only ever had Ron and Hermione to talk to, and I suppose I'm still getting used to not having to shut up whenever someone comes by, or worry that we might be overheard. And when I saw it was you I behaved like the world's biggest arse because I didn't want you to think I don't trust you which only made it seem like I did.
"And, honestly," he went on, well aware they were both rambling, "what I was telling them, it's about this…theory that Dumbledore and I have been putting together, but we still don't much and he asked me specifically not to tell anyone else. And it's…"
"Harry," she interrupted, leaning up to press a kiss on his cheek. "It's okay. I knew what I was getting into, doing this with you."
"That's not fai-"
"What's not fair is you having the weight of the world on your shoulders."
"You deserve someone who-"
"Be very careful how you finish that sentence."
He sighed her name and closed his eyes. He didn't know how to form his thoughts into words. It was all a jumble of strong feelings overpowering one another. He wished he could just kiss her into understanding him, but the importance of having this conversation wasn't lost on him.
"I want to deserve you," he tried instead, switching course. "I shouldn't have acted like such a nutter earlier."
"You didn't act like a nutter, Harry." He raised an eyebrow. "Well, maybe a little bit, but not nearly as much as I did, pretending to lose my temper over one thing when my feelings were hurt over another. My entire family's involved in the Order, if you haven't noticed. I understand the importance of the mission, and what you mean to it. And I understand the importance of Ron and Hermione to you too. Don't go on feeling guilty for doing what you have to do."
"I would tell you if I could. You know that right?"
The look she gave him was the most honest look he'd ever received–openly thoughtful and searching, and she was so, so pretty. "I'm beginning to see that, yeah."
"Good," he said, finally feeling like he could breathe again. "Good."
"Yes, good," agreed Ginny. "So long as you don't go on trying to dictate what I deserve or telling me what I can or can't do."
"Not even I would be so reckless as trying to control you."
"Has the Great Harry Potter met his match?"
"I never stood a chance."
Then she smiled. Harry felt it in his toes and behind his ears and everywhere else, lighting him up, filling him with warmth.
She stood high on her tiptoes and held his cheeks in her hand, bringing her face close enough that their noses were touching. "How could you ever think you don't deserve me?" she mumbled. Then they were back to kissing, and Harry felt so light he could have imagined he was floating.
Her tongue tumbled into his mouth with surprising urgency that he was all too eager to return, kissing her in place until he heard that sound again. Then walking her backwards until they fell back on the couch, and they were both on their sides, her legs twining around his, and he felt his affection for her grow into something real, something tangible building inside him. His hands roamed her body as far as they could go, squeezing her tightly, urging her closer until he had to stop.
He said her name again as he gasped for air, and her hands moved around his neck, her face buried in his chest.
"Harry," she said after a couple minutes.
Her head lifted, their eyes met.
"We're going to fight. If we're in this. We will piss each other off."
"Okay," he nodded, finding her hand and squeezing. "I'm in this."
"Good. Me too."
"Thank Merlin."
She smiled softly and brought their joined hands to her face, letting her lips run over his knuckles. His thumb ran absentminded circles around her skin.
"I can't believe your best mates are Ron and Hermione and you thought one fight would do us in," she said finally.
His cheeks flushed, and he smiled back, slightly embarrassed. "That's different."
Ginny gave him a raised eyebrow and a knowing look.
"Okay, I suppose not that different."
She smiled, giving each of his fingers individual kisses now, and he suddenly felt the largest desire to pour his entire heart out to her, to tell her every thought he'd ever had.
He settled for: "But still different, you know? They know each other better than they know themselves. Most of the time I swear they just do it for fun, because they know it won't last very long, that neither of them are going anywhere. And it's mostly just small things they bicker over. Except for the Lavender debacle, but they've both figured that one out by now, it's only a matter of time at this point. And–my point is, you and I, we're still learning, aren't we?"
"Yes," she replied, eyes shining. "I suppose we are. But you should know, Harry, growing up with six brothers, I have a very high tolerance for bullshit."
He gave her a shining smile back. "Good to know. And I do. Miss you, I mean. You should know that too. What you said earlier, about seeming like I didn't miss you. Ginny, I think if you knew how much time I spent missing you, you'd call the mental hospital on me. It's ridiculous, really, how…happy I am to be with you. All the bloody time."
Her smile was so real and bright that Harry would have kept scrambling for words all night to keep it on her face. But she shut him up with a kiss and informed him, "I've already forgiven you, Harry. Save it for the next argument."

okay, so i’ve just finished your Just Friends fic, and now i’ve just been analyzing every aspect of this story because it’s that fucking good. and so personally, after all the psychoanalysis and interpretative symbolize i feel were very subtly connected with each other, i think that könig and engel… AND BARE WITH ME… are perfect for each other, i would even go as far as to say that they were probably meant for each other, and i mean, like, probably soulmates.
and before i get into this, i just want to say, as a disclaimer, i’m not romanticizing anything of this and i don’t condone any of this. this my own analysis on i what interpreted in your fic and why i feel this way.
anyway, their relationship is a great example of a twisted, dark, semi-toxic relationship, and i say semi-toxic because although these two are absolutely insane separately, könig’s sociopathic and personality tendencies and engels morbid curiosity and possible anti social tendencies of her own, together they compliment each other to the T. it’s no wonder why engel keeps going back to him, it’s not a matter of her not knowing any better or being naive, in fact it’s the complete opposite, she knows what she’s getting into, she loves it and she thrives off of it. engel revels in the forbidden realm of her fantasies that she tends to escape from, and now with könig, who so openly offers it to her, she is clearly driven by desire and lust of her own and will engage with it as much as possible so instinctively. at this point, she’s aware of everything könig can do for her, to her, and more, and i feel, after our conclusion of what we know, engel will definitely use that to her advantage, not necessarily to use him but to explore for herself and what he can continue for her. sure, it‘a possibly, definitely self-indulgent, and probably selfish of her, but she’s happy, and when she’s happy könig’s happy, and as long as she doesn’t cross a line that i’m pretty she’s knows könig have repeatedly emphasized, they will continue there escapades happily. and i would continue on to explain my own little theories about könig’s psyche and his future with her but this is getting too long.
i truly think that what they feel for each other is genuine, it may not be love, it may be obsession, but whatever it is, it’s there and they both aware of it. no matter how toxic it may be to the normal eye, no one can’t deny that when they’re together they’ve truly become one. i’m sure after everything they been through, they will be inseparable, they will become each other in their own right. i think they depend on each other more than ever, and in a way, that is poetically beautiful in the most fucked up of ways. i love it, i love you, i love what you created. thank you for reading my essay~
i would love to offer up some headcanons of my own in the future, but im not sure. o.o
Tumblr media
Okay. Okay. Okay.
I'm fine! Everything's fine ❤️
First of all. I had to take the longest moment to cry sit and stare at a wall after reading your message. I will try and not make a fool of myself when I answer this, but... (I know I'm about to sound as crazy as König & Engel)
You don't even know how much this means to me 💕 because this is IT. This is exactly what this story is about. Your analysis is better, more profound and more nuanced than anything I could ever have written myself. *cries*
Reader explores her suppressed fantasies, the dark side of her soul through and with König, yes.
Just like we do here on tumblr when we're indulging ourselves in these silly little imagines...? I'm sorry if this makes people uncomfortable but that's just how I see it and as I've said before it's only healthy to have an outlet (and not forget humor while we're at it 🤍)
And so does König explore his light, angelic side with Engel! She represents everything he has cast outside of himself and wants to reclaim: innocence, kindness, softness, vulnerability, life, normality, even safety.
Sure, he also projects his mother wound (or whatever you wish to call it) onto her and seeks in her the nurturer he never had, the comfort and appreciation he never had. Engel on the other hand seeks a powerful protector and wants to let go of the stifling need to be sane and kind and conventional. She has agency: in the end, everything in this story happens as a result of her actions and decisions.
It's not healthy, it's not safe or sane, but it's genuine and it's a true attempt to live more honestly. They're both crazy, but I still believe that under the obsession and madness blooms a strange but strong love. They belong together!
And this is also the reason why she is special and König absolutely adores her – I haven't been succesful, perhaps, in trying to convince people of it because toxic König sorta has a life of its own nowadays but your analysis proved it all so beautifully that I can only say THANK YOU and also would you marry me please you're awesome I love you 🩷💖💋
And I'd LOVE to hear more of your headcanons! Feel free to ramble in my inbox anytime or if you feel comfortable enough I wish to remind (everyone) that my dms are always open too 💕
Thank you anon for your essay, it was the most delightful read and I think I'm going to go and cry a bit more now...!
