Happy Black History month! I rarely make booklists like this, however, it recently came to my attention that some people aren’t aware of the brilliant subgenre that is gothic/horror written by people of global majority (colour), given it is black history month this list focuses on black people vampire stories written by black people, most of which are also queer (cause vampires are queer af). Allyship is the bare minimum, if we as a society are to grow at all from our forefathers we must understand that our ancestors were flawed, unlearn internalized biases (racism etc), and make intersectional spaces for everyone. I’ve kept it to 10 for my own ability to count everything, I can say with most certainty there’s more out there. These are just the ones I’ve read/watched and have influenced me the most.

What image do you have as a wallpaper: On my computer, it’s the cover of the book I’m currently writing for inspiration.

Lock screen: Wonder Woman. She reminds me to keep going even when I feel helpless. She’s my childhood hero and an inspiration.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years: In my dream house with my hubby and a slew of cats and maybe a dog. On the wall I will have a lot more book covers framed and maybe my name on one or two of the bestseller lists.  Maybe a couple of movie posters based on my books. (I writer can dream!)

If you could be anywhere else right now, where would you be: Rome in October with my husband walking through the Forum at night hand in hand.

What was your coolest Halloween costume: A fallen angel with huge black wings and a velvet dress with feathers on the sleeves over a chiffon ballgown skirt.

Have you ever been to Las Vegas: On my honeymoon! And it inspired my novel The Mesmerized.

Here are the first lines of my WIPS

1. Midnight

Vampires have been coexsisting with humans for centuries remaining their predators, but as Guardians of Vandernight Court, one of the largest and most powerful courts in the supernatural world, it is me and Elliot’s job to make sure we’re never exposed to humans and no abominations between supernaturals were ever born or created if they were we would dispose of them, that was the oath I took two hundred years ago.

2. The Awakening

My name is Aria Parker, I’m sixteen and live here in Crestwood with my mom Lana and my brother Clyde who is a freshmen at Equinox University, he’s majoring in Eschatology the study of the afterlife. This is my first day at Crestwood’s Elite high school, Theta Academy. My friend Jessica Balasco and her boyfriend Kyle Price have been here since their freshman year. The wating list was long but I’m honored to be here. I read my introduction to myself as the bus came to a halt at across the street from Theta academy.

3. The Ancients

The sound of chanting began to fade as my eyes opened and saw nothing but blurs of darkness. I struggled to push the stone top off of the coffin I’d been condemned to centuries ago, the feeling of disgusting muddy water, seaweed and black charcoal covered my naked body. Once my vision became returned to normal I scanned the cave which the coffin washed up in, there were symbols of bounding and protection on top of the coffin but the magical circle around it was made of crushed human bone with a few scattered black candles causing the enchantment from centuries ago to weaken.

Microreview Round 8: Spook-tober

What do you like in a spooky book? Slow burn? Ghosts? Monsters? Zombies? Serial killers? I like slow burn psychological horror. Is the house really haunted? Are they really stalking you? Are you just losing your mind? Who knows! I also love game-changing plot twists, like everything I’ve read up to this point hasn’t been at all what I thought it was.

What’s your favorite Halloween read (be it horror, thriller, graphic novel, etc.)? Recently, it’s been Paul Tremblay’s A Head Full of Ghosts and Dawn Kurtagich’s And the Trees Crept In. 

What about it makes it your favorite? They’ve both got the things I like. You assume one thing is happening, but is it really? These are both different kinds of horror. Tremblay’s deals with a family and an exorcism, Kurtagich’s is about orphans trying to survive surrounded by a spooky forest. 

What's a good horror or scary movie to pair it with? Hm... My first instinct would be to say The Exorcist, for one. For Trees I would say Blair Witch (2016)  or The Forest. Lots of questioning reality and sanity. But watch at your own risk, because these movies can be quite triggering.

I can’t wait to see what everyone else has to say!

Hello I am Meera S (they/them), I am a speculative fiction writer, writer of historical fiction and more, all of it is queer centric and with person of global majority (colour) angle. Please interact with this post and I shall add you back to the best of my ability!

about my writing

I’ve been writing and fan fictioning since I was 10. I started my first novel a little over a year ago, I am editing it in a month. I gravitate towards the gothic and historical but I am not gonna limit myself to that. I also write short stories, fic and poetry. 

1. Vampires, witches, werewolves, ghosts, and more, oh my!: I love me some monsters and allegories that are multilayered, just not zombies. 

2. Fantasy and gothic, I write about the human through the inhuman, Anne Rice once said vampire was the most poignant allegory for outcast and other-ness. 

3. The historical. You have to know the past to understand the present and future. Ancient History through 1920s and all of South Asian history and mythology. 

4. Diversity: I am a queer south asian person but I do earnestly try for informed diverse world views that are nuanced and sympathetic even if not “moral” because vampire, etc.

Heavily inspired by Wilde’s poetry, Emilie Autumn, steampunk, the allegory of ghosts as the inescapable past popularized by Charles Dickens in A Christmas Carol. Random Thought

So while I’m trying to decide if vampires are the villains or not in this as of yet unformed fantasy novel idea, I had a thought about their origins.

Strangely, I had the idea playing Dragon Age:Inquisition. Or perhaps, not so strange, because that’s how this whole idea began.

What if becoming a vampire was the endgame for necromancers? Like, okay, so necromancers are super big into raising the dead, occasionally attempting to take over the world. Sometimes they’re just misunderstood and are actually super helpful. I DIGRESS. But usually it’s applied to other dead people, not themselves.

SO. What if a couple dinglehoppers decided to mess around and during the course of spellcasting, turn themselves into vampires?

I mean, usually when I’m contemplating vampire origins, I default mostly on demons. BUT THIS WOULD MAKE IT SO MUCH MORE MAGICAL. Well, demons could still work, technically, but this could be really interesting.

There’s still the question of if they’re capable of turning others or if it’s strictly the ‘you must study for years in necromancy before you can achieve the magic necessary to become a vampire’ type deal. Also vampire children, because if there’s to be a royal family, it is something to consider.

@writingvampires I blame you. Not really, but you did inspire this. Now I have to figure out how important they are or if they’re just background characters.

 Five things on my to-do list: finish my pitch materials for my agent, finish my current manuscript, finish organizing my closet, take a trip to the beach, continue to improve my health

I’ve been writing while recovering from pneumonia and have been floored with the way THE TALES OF SINNER SHARPE is shaping up. As posted on Twitter recently, I’ve come to realize Sinner is the villain of this story, but only insofar as his monstrousness keeps him from treating people…like people. But that’s not this excerpt. This excerpt is when the world opens up a bit more and we meet the Othrillians’ god, Giru, along with Sinner, and begin to understand there’s a bit more going on in this world than we thought.
