It’s bike maintenance day! 😺🏍🔧

Honestly this is the first time I’ve done more involved jobs like taking apart my calipers and rebuilding them. I have the typical stock toolkit that fits under the seat and I just don’t carry enough repair stuff with me, nor do I want to. I’m finally somewhere that has extra tools I can use. I’d love to carry a breaker bar, a torque wrench and full size sockets to make things easier, but I chose the badminton, book and skincare life 😹

I forgot how much I missed wrenching. I usually just pay for oil changes on the road because I don’t have a drain pan, nor do I want to deal with the logistics of how to drain the old oil or what contraption I can make to catch it blah blah blah.

So I’m happy to be working on my own bike. She is my machine. Don’t be fooled, I learned and am STILL learning how to do this stuff from YouTube University and sometimes I ask mechanics a bunch of questions before I dive in.

If I can can do it, you can do it too.

This my car Appa. Appa is an '06 Astra H named as such because he won't start unless I shout "Yip! Yip!" when turning the key. I'm not joking.

It all started with this. I had known that my fenders were a bit rusty when I bought the car last winter and planned to fix it during summer. However, upon closer inspection (kicking absentmindedly) I accidentally put my foot straight through the rotten sheet metal. This was going to be a bigger job than previously anticipated.

Removing the fender wasn't the easiest thing. Reaching every bolt required removing the front fender and headlights. Upon inspection the part was beyond repair, at least for someone of my skill level. I decided to buy a new (meaning less rusty and the wrong shade of blue) one at the junk jard.

And here was the culprit. 17 years of road dust, leaves and other debris collecting behind the wheel housing and sucking up moisture, rotting the fender from inside out.

The rest of the chassis had luckily survived thanks to the factory rust protection, only rusting slightly (considering the circumstances) around the surface. Nothing a bit of sanding couldn't fix.

In my infinite wisdom I of course didn't record the repainting process of the new fender. Only the finished sub par product since I have NO experience with clear coat.

I did photograph the other fender which also needed repair though.

Process goes like this:

Grind and sand away all the rust.

Fill holes with filler and aluminium mesh for strength.

Sand

Apply more filler where you missed it

Sand

Apply more filler where you missed it

Sand

Give up on perfection

Sand

Prime with rust binding primer (the orange paint)

Spray [car color] paint

Spray clear coat

Done

And here he is in all his glory.

Now all that's left is a broken outer temperature sensor, hand brake, rear brake caliper, cracked lower control arm, broken muffler, loose heat shield, broken ac fan and probably some other shit I haven't noticed yet.
