Tips on character voices when writing fic

This is written in mind for people writing fic in MCYT/QSMP/DSMP/Life series/etc kind of fandoms. But if anyone finds it useful for anything else, well then, hell yeah.

Character voice is big in all, uh, fiction, and mimicking it in any fanwork is big. But I think it’s especially big in these fandoms where the voices are so distinct – it’s usually how a Real Person Somewhere (the streamer) talks, versus something very scripted that you’d see in a TV show or novel. And it can be a big difference in your character sounding generic versus really feeling true to the original.

Listen to a bunch of your subject talking. If you want to write a character well, watch vods from their point of view, or episodes where they show up a bunch. Take note of what they say and how.

2. If you don’t know how to start doing that: try literally writing down what they say. Transcribe an actual exchange in fic-format. You probably won’t want to publish a literal exchange from canon, but it will give you a sense of how to physically write what they say.

3. If you do this (or just pay attention to how they talk), you will get a lot of: Stumbling, pauses, repeating words, filler words, weird sentence constructions, fragments, etc. I love em! Here’s something that comes through in improv much more than in novels or movies: Most people, even very charismatic people, are not very eloquent when they speak. Writing out conversations or sentences will give you a sense of the unique and delightful way in which your subject is not eloquent. vvvvv way more under cut vvvvv

(People use a LOT of filler/etc when they speak. It’s reasonable to cut back on this if it’s interfering with a nice-looking or readable result. I believe this is the eternal struggle of people who write transcripts – you want the transcript to be accurate, but there are also a lot of things you can obviously simplify and not lose the meaning. So you’ll end up falling somewhere on this spectrum either way. But I do think a lot of mediocre/generic fic dialogue is very stylized – it doesn’t sound like your guy because your guy literally wouldn’t say that. They would say it worse and more confusingly.)

(I’m serious, if you’ve never sat down with a short non-completely-scripted clip or real conversation or whatever and just written out exactly what was said, do it. It will make you better at writing.)

4. Wonda-cat made a really incredible list [link] of characterizing speech patterns for the Dream SMP members. But you can also do your own reconnaissance and come up with your own patterns, common phrases, etc.

5. You do not have to get EVERYTHING right. You’re not going to, like, get so deep into the speaker’s brain that you can produce “exactly what they would have said if they were somehow in your fic.” That is impossible. You’re just trying to evoke a character, and if you get a few turns of phrase to ring true, you’re doing great.

6. A lot of these people are popular because they are hilarious. Include jokes. Yes, even if your thing is angsty or serious. A lot of the most serious lore I can think of from, e.g., the Dream SMP or 3rd Life or the QSMP - the really story-defining, life-and-death moments - were absolutely hysterical. If you’re writing characters who are usually funny, then add some humor. It can heighten angst via contrast and a sense of realism. Ask yourself what a funny streamer would make jokes about if they were possessing a character in this situation.

7. Some people have the mystical ability to “hear” character voices in their head, and read things in their voice. If you can, do this with all of your dialogue during the editing process. This won’t always get you there, but sometimes it can catch things that sound wrong by invoking "that's really hard to imagine them saying". If you don’t have this power, try recruiting a friend who does.

8. So there’s dialogue and then there’s narration that’s still from a character’s point of view. I’ve mostly given you tips about dialogue, but a lot of this is also true for narration. IMO, narration is less about phrasing things the way the subject would, and more about recreating the way they think. I don’t have concrete rules on how to do this, but here is my wisdom:

You can get eloquent again - narration is more of an abstract and artistic process than dialogue.

Spend time with your subject’s source material.

Pay attention to what they notice and care about. How do you think they think?

Don’t be afraid to get weird with it.

That last one also applies to all art ever.

9. MCYT tends to give you a great boon you don’t see in other media: what the speaker says to their chat/audience when nobody else is listening. This can be incredibly characterizing even if you’re writing a story where people don’t have chats. It’s your person talking about their thought processes and feelings! Mine that shit.

10. Some questions that might help guide both characterizing narration and dialogue (that you’d get from dialogue):

How open are they about their feelings?

How often do they lie? What do they lie about?

What kind of metaphors do they use, if any?

How quickly does their mood change?

How can you tell when they’re in different moods?

What kind of things do they pay attention to?

How formal is their speech?

11. Finally, this is a little odd, but I find it’s much, much easier to write a character that sounds good if I, the author, like them and am rooting for them at least a little bit. If a character needs to be there who you don’t love, try to love them. Or at least get a sense of what other people love about them. It just makes everything else easier. I swear to god.

List of books/Tv shows/other stuff that I would like to see Chase and co. visit

This is non-exhustive lsit so feel free to add more.

Also this list will include non-book media, because as far as I'm concerned things like plays and tv shows have to have a (physical) script at some point and you know what a script is? A story written out on bunch of pages tied together in book-like fashion. Check-mate baby.

Carmilla. This one is self explanatory. A hot lesbian villianess flirts and sort of seduces naive fair haired maiden. Somehow both the stuff of Chase's dreams (bcs vampires yay) and his worst nightmares (bcs he has to hang around Buddy, and also doubful consent). I just wanna watch these two dance around the plot trying to figure out how to make it work onsidering their relationship over all.

Swan lake. Idk I just think aesthetic would be pretty. Also I just imagine Chase only watched the Barbie movie version so he has no clue what he's in for. He's dissapointed though there's no unicorn.

Any isekai manhwa. I just wanna see how Chase's profesional story-hopping works within the context traditional isekai. Like is he just isekaining into the body of the od Heroine or is he also hijacking the mind of the isekaied real heroine?

She-ra and the Princesses of Power. Chase gets a cool sword, Buddy gets to be a cat (provided he's not going to take on the role of the Shadow Weaver but let's just assume that's not the case). also they are obligated to flirt again. Great!

Thorn of Court and Roses. Especially after Buddy and Chase grow closer. Feyre flips off all the male love interests and goes off to make out with Amarantha which incidentally solves her riddle breaking the curse (yeah I know Amarantha's very evil, but also I never cared for those books and I just thought it would be funny.)

lowkey Coraline but only with Chase. Yes it will be dark and unsettling, but I still think it would be interesting to see Chase dealing with Other Mother given his own baggage.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Chase and Buffy are just too much alike for this not to be fun. Blonde cheerleader-sort-of types that are willing to go anything for those they love and are sassy to boot (and crushing on vampires as if it's their job). Also depending on what season this would be Buddy could be either Cordelia, Drusilla, Gloria or Anya(? or Willow technically in one specific season) but to be honest I would really like to see him as either Gloria or Drusilla (RIP Spike, torn between these two women only for them to start making out).

Howl's Moving Castle - again just for Chase and Deacon maybe. I wanna see Chase inerract with book Howl.

My Lady Jane. Adding this one purely bcs I wanna know if Guildford Dudley would hate Deacon the same way all the other horses in stories do.

Okay this one is tricky but if they figured out a way to get into digital world, one of those "I was sold to One Direction/Justin Bieber is my new roomate/boss" self-insert fanfics. Purely for Chase as a treat/threat

Sibling Shuffle: Random Bits of Lore

I’m gonna be busy this week, so probably won’t post very much. So, have some assorted lore. Sorry!

When Roll found out that Rock hadn’t seen Star Wars, she called the rest of the family for an “Emergency Movie Night.” (Rock is now not only a fan of the first movies in the Star Wars trilogy, he also keeps some of his possessions in a Star Wars backpack.)

Speaking of movies, Roll likes Mulan. I’ve had this headcanon for ages and I don’t know where exactly it comes from, but she thinks Mulan is super cool. She has definitely dressed as Mulan for Halloween at least once.

Blues has never thrown out a gift someone gave him. His scarf (a gift from Dr. Light) is his most prized possession, yes, but he has kept some pretty useless gifts, too. For example, he has a bunch of "cool-looking" rocks that one of his best friends used to hand him and infodump to him about whenever they hung out.

Bass isn’t allowed to play competitive games inside of Wily's fortresses/castles/hideouts with Piano anymore. Not after… the incident. 

When Piano first learned some internet slang, she used it. (Imagine this girl pointing blank-faced at an E-Tank and monotonously announcing "This be bussin', yo. No cap." and then downing the entire thing.)

All Robot Masters have a function that governs their decisions. Roll & Rock are both supposed to "help people" (which both do by hero-ing, Roll does still help at Light Labs & Rock initially did by helping Wily) (Rock also likes to help out at local animal shelters, and Roll helps fix robots that are damaged in her free time), Bass has something more like "help / support Piano" (which doesn’t say anything about how useful he has to be, which he exploits), and Piano has something like "be the strongest/best" (which gives her a surprisingly large degree of freedom). Blues just happens to have the most versatile function: he’s supposed to demonstrate the capabilities of Robot Master AI - basically, his function is to "be himself".

All of them are kinda stuck in their function, however. Roll and Rock will always be looking for ways to help people. Bass can’t often turn down a request for help from Piano (even if he’s not actively looking for ways he can help like Roll & Rock do). Piano, similarly, can’t refuse a chance to prove her superiority. And Blues would rather literally die than risk losing his personality. There are loopholes in each one (for example: Rock’s function being exploited by Wily up until Kalinka’s kidnapping), and they each have their own thoughts & feelings on their functions, but they can’t really "escape" them.

Most Robot Masters can’t swear. Bass, as you can see in the comic strips, has tried. They get real-time censored by a loud beep if they try. Because Dr. Light was still working out the details of the censor at the time of his construction, Blues can’t talk about hell (the place) without getting censored like he’s saying hell (the swear). (Blues won’t let Dr. Light fix it, both because he doesn’t like anyone poking around in his programming and because he thinks it’s funny.)

Chapter Two: Casually Cruel in the Name of Being Honest

Pairings: Feyre/Rhysand

Summary:

Feyre has spent the last two years of her life trying to be the perfect girlfriend for Tamlin. She's pushed away her friends, her sisters, her father… she even quit her job and started going to UCLA on his paycheck. Everyone who used to know her insists that she's losing herself, but Feyre knows better. Tamlin is kind, funny, smart-- even rich and handsome, as if that matters. Feyre is lucky to have him. Sure, she'd like him to respect her interests and loved ones a little more, but no one is perfect. Certainly no one who would go for her. Tamlin is the best she's ever going to have. Right?

TL;DR: Feyre leaves her toxic relationship with Tamlin and immediately lands herself a mega-rich Hollywood prince charming. AKA Rhysand

“Tamlin?” Feyre called, stepping into the empty foyer. “Tam, where are you?”

She found him in the living room, pacing back and forth. His hair was a mess, like he’d been running his hands through it. He turned, his eyes going wide upon seeing her.

“Feyre,” he breathed. “You’re home.”

“I tried to call you back,” she explained. “Did you get my texts?”

  “Did you get mine?” he shot back.

“Yes, eventually.” She did her best to speak with a voice that might calm him. “My phone was off. I was in a movie theater.”

“Oh, believe me, I know.” Tamlin stalked towards her. “Any other details you want to add? Or are you just going to conveniently leave out who you invited as soon as you found out you were free of me?”

“Tam…” Feyre looked up at him, brows furrowed in confusion. “It wasn’t like that. They were already there when you texted me. They invited me to join them because they thought I could use some cheering up after you had to cancel.”

He scoffed.

“Oh, because I’m just the worst boyfriend in the world, right?”

“No!” she reared back. “That is not what I meant. I was just looking forward to seeing you, and I was sad that you couldn’t make it. That’s all.”

“You are so ungrateful, you know that?” he sneered. Guilt and shame twisted in her stomach. “I was working my ass off to make the money that pays for your life, and all I wanted was to come home to you so we could spend time together. I even ordered takeout from that sushi place you like. I thought we could sit on the couch and watch the movie here. But instead, I come home to an empty house and see that Morrigan fucking Blackwood tagged you in some picture of you two at that stupid-ass romcom.”

“I’m sorry,” Feyre said, reaching forward to touch his arm. He was angrier than usual. Normally he would have calmed at the touch, maybe even leaned into it. Now, he snatched his arm away from her. “I’m so sorry. You’re right. I should have just gone home. But I hadn’t hung out with other women in so long, and–”

“There’s a reason for that, Feyre.” Tamlin hissed. “It’s because those women poison your mind. All they talk about is gossip, trash TV, and their unrealistic career goals. You want to have female friends? Fine! Be my guest. But hang out with real women, Feyre, like Ianthe. Women who could teach you a thing or two about what it means to be a good partner.”

Rage and jealousy flooded her, frigid and burning hot all at once. What made him think he could speak to her like this? Why had she allowed it for so long?

“Well, if you like Ianthe so much, why don’t you marry her instead?” Feyre snapped. “I’m sure she would never dare to do anything fun without your permission.”

Tamlin’s eyes widened in rage, but Feyre didn’t stop.

“You want to know why I don’t hang out with Ianthe?” she seethed. “It’s because I hate her. She’s the most insufferable, intolerable bitch I’ve ever met in my entire life. She’s rude, pretentious, and the only thing she’s ever worked for in her entire life is attention. All she ever does is insult me. All she ever does is insult you! I honestly don’t even know why you hang out with her. You want to talk about being a good partner? Fine, let’s talk about it. You can spend as much money on me as you want, but that does not give you the right to belittle me. I love my sisters. I love their friends. I wish their friends were my friends. I wish I had spent the last two years of my life with them, drinking cheap beers in a shitty apartment, but instead I spent them with you.”

Silence rang through the room after her confession. Tamlin looked like he’d been slapped.

“What are you saying, Feyre?”

What was she saying?

“I think…” She took a deep breath, trying to collect herself. “I think I want to break up.”

The words felt foreign coming out of her mouth. What the hell was she doing? She didn’t want to break up with Tamlin. She loved him, and he loved her. Shouldn’t that be enough? 

It wasn’t. It wasn’t and she knew it wasn’t. He might love her, but he didn’t respect her. Somewhere along the line, she thought she might have lost her respect for him, too.

“Don’t say that,” Tamlin begged. “Please don’t say that.”

Tears were streaming down his face, but Feyre only felt blank, as if her emotions were still loading.

“I’m sorry. But I think we need this. I think I need this. I’ve been your girlfriend for two years, Tam. And I love it, I love you, but…” She blew out a long breath. “I need to find my way back to the person I am outside of you and your standards.”

“You know what?” Tamlin scoffed. “Fine. I don’t need this. Whatever nonsense those girls put in your head, you’re not who I thought you were if you bought it after one night. I’ve been nothing but good to you, and this is how you respond?”

“I’ve been feeling this way for a while,” Feyre explained. “And I’ll always be grateful for what you’ve done for me. But I need to be on my own for a bit. Just so I can–”

“So you can do what?” Tamlin snapped. “Fuck strangers at the bar? Tell all your friends how evil your ex is? Go out and get drunk with people you barely know? Destroy your mind with the filth you love to read and watch?”

Feyre gaped at him.

“Yeah, and I’ll be skinny dipping under the moon and placing hexes on your bloodline, too.”

“Oh, fuck you.” Tamlin grabbed the front of Feyre’s dress, pinning her to the arch of the entranceway. The cold wood dug into her spine, and his knuckles threatened to bruise her chest. “You think you’re so fucking funny? You wanna be a smartass?”

“Let go–”

“Don’t tell me what to do.” Tamlin shook her. “When did you become such a piece of shit?”

“Tamlin, please, I’m sorry, let’s just–”

Feyre’s phone interrupted her, a familiar ring tone blasting from her pocket.

“That’s Nesta,” she whispered to him. His eyes shot daggers at the phone before meeting hers. 

“Answer it,” he ordered. Slowly, Feyre reached down for her phone, accepting the call as quickly as she could.

“Hey, Nes,” she managed around the lump in her throat. “What’s up?”

Tamlin mouthed the word speaker at her, and Feyre quickly pressed the button, bringing the phone between them for him to hear.

“I spoke to Emerie today,” her sister’s unreadable voice came over the phone. “She said you two had a good time.”

“We did,” Feyre confirmed. “I wish you had been there.”

“Feyre, I…” Nesta’s voice trailed off. “I’ve been home for a week.”

The non-sequitur confused her.

“...Okay? Is everything alright at Stanford?”

“Yes, we’re just on winter break,” Nesta explained. “It’s why Emerie is in LA in the first place. But… don’t you think it’s weird that I’ve been home for a week and we haven’t seen each other?”

“LA is a big city, Nes.”

“I just mean that two years ago, you would have never not known that I was home. You would have called. I would have called.”

“I’m sorry, Nesta, I’ve just been so busy, and–”

“Feyre, I want you to come home, too.”

Tamlin looked like he was barely containing a growl.

“What do you mean?” Feyre asked. “I am home. I haven’t left LA.”

“I mean I want you to come home,” Nesta clarified, “I’m at the house with Elain. I want to see you.”

“I’ll see when I’m free–”

“Tonight.”

“What?”

“Tonight, Feyre.” Nesta demanded. “Come home tonight.”

The call disconnected, and Feyre stared at the phone in silence.

Finally, she said, “She’s going to come over here if I don’t go.”

“I know,” Tamlin grumbled. He let Feyre go, and she let out a sigh of relief when he stepped back. Feyre moved wordlessly towards the door, and Tamlin followed her. She prayed that he wouldn’t try to go with her to her sister’s house. Thankfully, all he did was walk her to the street and pay for her cab. It was only when she was speeding away that she texted him.

Feyre: I’m not coming back. I can’t keep feeling this way. I wish you the best.

Feyre blocked him immediately after hitting send. She knew that if he texted her, she’d consider trying to work it out. The fight, the condescension, even the bruises forming on her torso– he’d find some way to make her forget about it all if she spoke to him again. She’d figure out how to get her stuff back later. But then and there, all she could think about was how depressing she must look, sadly eating takeout sushi in the back of a cab, all dressed up for a date she never went on.

Elain pulled her into a tight hug as soon as she got through the door. Nesta was sitting on the couch, hitting pause on the movie they’d been watching.

“I’m so glad you made it!” Elain exclaimed, hurrying her to the couch. “There’s hot chocolate in the kitchen, we have cookies, and if you want, I’d could heat up–”

“What happened?” Nesta asked, cutting off the end of Elain’s sentence. She studied Feyre’s face. Feyre hadn’t been crying, so she didn’t know what Nesta saw that prompted the question. 

“What do you mean?” Elain asked. Feyre stayed silent.

“Something happened, before I called you,” Nesta declared. “What was it?”

Feyre sighed. She supposed there was no point in hiding it.

“Tamlin and I broke up.”

Elain gasped, and Feyre could see her doing her best to look sympathetic and sad. She couldn’t imagine Elain truly felt anything other than relief. Nesta, however, remained as blank as ever.

“How did it happen?” Nesta asked.

“I decided that I’d had enough. So I ended it.” She would explain the rest later.

Nesta carded a gentle hand through Feyre’s hair, her sharp nails scratching lightly at her scalp.

“Good.” She said. “I’m proud of you.”

Finally, Feyre felt a tear spill from her eye.

“Are you sad?” Nesta asked, her hand moving back and forth through Feyre’s hair.

“I want to be,” Feyre said. “I’m mostly just angry.”

The tears continued to flow, and Feyre let them.

“I know,” Nesta told her.

“I don’t think I’m feeling the things I’m supposed to feel,” Feyre confessed.

“What do you think you’re supposed to be feeling?”

“I think I’m supposed to miss him. Or feel guilty for how it ended.”

Nesta nodded like she understood.

“How do you feel now?”

Feyre sniffed.

“Relieved,” she admitted. “I’m so glad it’s over.”

Nesta smiled sadly at her sister.

“Me too.”

HES SO COOOOL I CANT. Theres a knuckles shaped part in my heart. (kinda wanna be him in a way it's kinda embarrassing) I LOVE all of his versions in sonic prime, renegade knucks has a special place in my heart though he's top tier. Sonic boom knuckles is so funny and stupid like him going ''Oh wait i cant read.'' is so funny to me as a dyslexic person myself. Movie knuckles needs to be protected at all costs istg he's so sweet. GIVE KNUCKLES ALL THE GRAPES HE WANTS! 🍇🍇🍇🍇

-Sonic the hedgehog

Sonic's on the same level as knuckles he genuinely so cool and i do base some of my personality off him... i love his character development in sonic prime but his attitude in sonic x is so funny its amazing. He's defo got a bit of attitude to him in the older stuff which makes me love him more. His jokes and ''Wtf is danger.'' attitude is so real. Also movie sonic voiced by Ben Schwartz HELL YEAH, i love Ben hes so funny i cant wait for sonic 3.

-Shadow the hedgehog

''Another sonic character? is all your favourite characters sonic characters?'' no, just wait i get to other characters <3 but MY MY MY MY MYYY OH MY I LOVE SHADOW. I remember my first sonic game, if you can even call it that, being Mario and Sonic 2012 Olympic games and always playing as either shadow, sonic, silver or amy. I loved paying as him. Also his game is SO FUN and his backstory is so fun to learn and 100% take some of his personality and put it onto mine like i do with sonic. He's just such a good character and im glad this is the year of shadow bcz we NEED more shadow content. i would ramble about him more but i cant think of anything else to say.

Another character voiced by Ben schwartz! I just recently watched this movie and i LOVED it. I used to like TMNT when i was little but never fully got into it but my favourites were always Leo and Mikey. Im literally him /hj. He's such a cool character (i say that with all of them i just love them all so much). Also if any TMNT fans have any movie/TV show recommendations for TMNT i am willing to take them!

I remember watching Into the Spider Verse and i loved it so much, i felt bad for miles in a way because he had to go through seeing spider man die in front of his eyes then realising hes the new spider man and blah blah blah. Im watching Penny's (from snapcube) VODs from when she played Spiderman 2 and miles' suits are so cool i love how they added the spider-verse movie suits into the game theyre defo some of my favs. Across the spider verse was such a good movie but into the spider verse was defo better (hot take? idk). Im so excited to see what happens in the next movie.

-Silver the hedgehog

Another sonic character yes, but i love sonic so much its my main special interest/hyperfixation. Silver is so silly i need to see more content of him tho. It's also kinda funny how his first appearance was sonic 06 ,which as we all know, is an awful game. In need to see more of him we need another game with him in as a playable character. Smt like SA2 idk.

-Batman

All forms of batman, lego batman is top tier and the rest under him. I watched the lego batman movie in the cinema when it came out and little me loved it and i recently, abt 3 years ago, got fully into batman stuff. The movies are so good and batman is such a cool character to, i need to meet more people who like him.

Thats it for now, i would add garfield but i dont really have anything to say abt him other than hes the most realest character ever. Hate mondays, love lasagne.

Deidara’s Headcanons

Deidara strikes me as an annoying type of guy

As in he would always tell people that what he does is the best

His ideas are better

And so on

People don’t like him

His friends barely can stand him this is why he has few friends

He is artistic and he knows he is very good at what he does

Has every social media platform in existence where he shares his art

His favorite is Twitter (X)

Because there is where the “haters” interact with his posts the most

He laughs at them most of the times

Some other he just gets very angry and insult them

Heavily

Like his accounts have been suspended a couple of times or shut down

He insults people a lot in the real world too

Not for fun though

He would when they deserve it and he would be so mean

He KNOWS how to dress

Some of his clothes are customized by him

Or hand made from him sometimes

He is a good driver (both car and motorcycle)

But if someone asked him to go slower he would try his best to do so (still speed here and there)

His family and friends would ask him to write letters for holidays and such

Honestly we need more shows like Willow (2022). The characters are on this quest (pretty simple plot) and they have adventures along the way. It reminds me of old school shows like Merlin or Legend of the seeker, and those shows were so good too! The characters are interesting, and they take time to really build them not like in other shows (yes I am looking at you blood origin). There also is representation, but to me that makes sense and isn't forced so the "wokeness" absolutely doesn't bother me and I even quite like it! The lesbian romance is nice and interesting. Characters have depth and flaws. They are not perfect like a Galadriel which would make them dull. I absolutely love this quite modern comedy, it is really funny and adds a real human-ness to the characters. They feel like real people.

Everything is quite simple but I mean it's all I need to enjoy it??? Being attached to characters and enjoying the dialogues and the character's relationships? Also not knowing how the quest will end???

I saw so many terrible comments about this show and I honestly don't get it. I mean, this show just works. It's better than terrible Blood origin and better than Ring of Power!!?? (I actually give a fuck this time)

Yes it is not perfect but I am ready to let them get away with the flaws because they are actually offering something creative, that doesn't take itself seriously, while making you reminisce about the old movie in a good way.

I really feel the passion and that they are trying their best and it makes it a pretty cool show that I am excited to watch.

What you need to realize is that hollywood doesn't make that type of shows anymore, now everyone wants another game of thrones because it is more mainstream. But these old school shows are gems. Pure gems. And it is a miracle someone decided to make another one. This is really a nerd show and I get why most people don't love it.

But for people like me this is really precious and it should be celebrated.

So please, share this show with people you know, praise this show, watch it, because it deserves a season 2. We desperately need it because this is the only type of show such as this that we have and have had for several years. If this kind of story doesn't work and it doesn't get renewed we might not get anything like this again.

If you asked me if I thought it was a good movie I wouldn't even be able to give you a straight answer like from a technical standpoint yes the animation is great the music is great… however there is more to a movie than just pictures and sounds… the pictures and sounds come together to tell a story… and the story here is. Well their hearts were in the right place. I think. I think it's got a generally anti-na.zi message but on a first watch it was definitely strange to see that element mixed with a fictional world in the way that it was. I hate that they tried to make us feel bad for alfons he knew what he was doing idgaf that he just wanted to build rockets 🥺 Having the roma character secretly work with the na.zis was. hmm idk about that. but holy shit am I glad they used the word roma. Making bradley's real-world doppleganger not only be jewish but a Real Life jewish man was also a choice! One thing I actually find interesting that a lot of people hate is that they made doppleganger hughes a na.zi... like in 03 they do say that those who benefit from violence and refuse to oppose it are complicit in it... dude was Just Following Orders as a soldier in a genocidal military like him being a real life na.zi makes more sense than a lot of things in cos 😭

Is there anything else I should add. The theme of dreams vs reality and what that has to do with ed's emotional journey is interesting. Winry looked awesome too. Love how al becomes ed and ed becomes their mother. Hohenheim envy chew toy was funny. I like when ed crashes the car. I like the scene where it's implied he drank himself to sleep. Lost heaven is a great song.

There's a good chance I'm just being a stick in the mud here, and before I say anything else I wanna clarify that like, if you are enjoying and excited for sonic movie 3, like do your thing, I'm not vagueblogging or making callouts about people who like them.

I liked the first two movies decently well when they came out, I remember being a part of that first wave of people who went "Wow, that was so much better than I expected, haha its finally a good video game movie!" And the thing is, movie 3 doesn't look to be doing anything notably different from the first two. So, I've been asking myself, ever since the first trailer for movie 3 dropped, "why are you so much more down on this one? Why does this suddenly strike you as Bad?"

I think it has to do with the context in which these movies are releasing. Like let's turn the clock back to the release of sonic movie 1, Feb 2020. The last 4 sonic games chronologically on the marker were Forces, Mania, TSR, and fucking Rise of Lyric, not to mention the BOOM cartoon still being fresh in folks heads. "But one of those is good!" Yes, and it was made entirely by essentially contracted fans. Sonic was in an ATROCIOUS place that kinda felt hopeless to recover from. So, yeah, at the time the first movie really was a breath of fresh air. Despite the MCU style quips, the fucking cop dad, and the abundance of humans as a focus, it was STILL better than any other Sonic Thing being made at the time, because it was putting a modicum of effort into depicting the character of Sonic as a Character, and not just a caricature, to say nothing of hints of introducing their own original lore elements. Movie 2 did more of that! Just 2 years later, it gave us exactly what movie 1 did, just more! For good and bad. I remember coming out of 2 a little more lukewarm, but still more or less Content, because it was a pretty good Sonic thing that came out.

And then I read the IDW comic finally.

I felt borderline insulted that there was honest to god high quality, funny, gripping, and passionate Sonic material on the market that I just didn't know about until thinking it look it over out of idle curiosity. Sure, I knew the comics Existed, I remember when IDW first got the IP and they premiered Tangle, everyone loves Tangle. But I just kind of assumed it was like anything else Sonic coming out at the time; mediocre at best. And I'm really mad at myself for that, because the IDW comics are possibly everything you could want if you also considered yourself a starving Sonic fan. You like that one character who hasn't been in the spotlight for years? IDW has you covered. Character dynamics and not just one liners? IDW. Honest to god emotion and pathos? IIIIIIIIDW. And its been going on in the background of all this garbage for years now with nary a thrown bone. Please for the love of god read the IDW comics.

And THEN. Frontiers happened.

To get out ahead of this, yes I could take a red pen to Frontiers and underline every little mistake it makes from both a mechanical and narrative perspective. But I won't be doing that. Frontiers represented something I genuinely thought would not happen; Sonic, both the character and the series, getting a massive shot in the arm. New character that actually adds something to the universe with staying power. New lore for old concepts. A new take on voice direction that put previously Just Fine VAs in a better light. Ian Flynn - the guy primarily behind the IDW comics! - brought on as a writer (and no not just a translator he did work with the sonic team guys on the script). Real, tangible ambition in gameplay with player freedom as a focal point. If you described Frontiers, faults and all, to someone in 2018 or so, they'd assume it was a passionate fangame, because sonic team/sega could NEVER make something like this. And yet, here we are.

And then Shadow Generations! I almost feel like I dont need to elaborate on this one, everyone is head over heels for ShadowGen, for what I think are plainly obvious reasons. Building off the back of the previous game instead of throwing it all out and making a new engine Again. Reinstating one of the most popular characters and including everything people Actually Liked about him to begin with. Honest to god closure and emotional payoff for him. Getting back Marza Animation for like the entire game?? Frontiers was "a step in the right direction". ShadowGen is just A Good Fucking Sonic Game.

And then you compare that now. Living now in a post IDW, Frontiers, and ShadowGens timeline... movie 3 doesn't have a place anymore. Its trying to do all the same things as 1 and 2 but where before they were pleasant consolations, now they ring... annoying.

After Frontiers and IDW actually made me laugh on more than one occasion, hearing Sonic make marvel quips makes me groan. After seeing them make strides in referencing and reincorporating their own lore, reference gags like Knuckles going "pika pika!" makes me roll my eyes and sigh. Gerald finally has an Actual Character now, we have this wonderful window into who he was as a person, the mournful father of Shadow and grandfather to Maria, the good man backed into a wall by fate... and then seeing him being played as a box standard Evil Scientist by Jim Fucking Carrey makes me want to eat drywall.

Its a remarkable phenomenon really, the movies are continuing to do the Exact same thing they've always been doing, but now the landscape has changed around them. And I honestly don't think there's a place for them anymore, not unless they grow up real damn quick. I love the path that the sonic series is on right now, because its reminded me why I like it to begin with. I dont love that we've gotta still walk it with this guy going "So THAT just happened" and cocking an eyebrow every time something Mildly Strange happens.

People who don’t like to watch musicals or are simply unfamiliar with the concept saying that “music came out of nowhere. and they start singing , it was so unnecessary” are low-key funny

People who are more keen of musicals seeing this incompetent as a musical might be onto something . I believe there could’ve been more songs especially written for the show itself .

The general idk the exact word but interdisciplinary(?) approach was a nice thing . it adds depth compatible with the whole thing and it intensifies the experience .

The movie is a psychological thriller ,I entered the movie without checking anything about it .i only knew there would be a new joker movie .a few days ago when I was at the mall I saw it was being showed so I bought a ticket . So I didn’t have much of a expectation of such explicit tense and uncomfortable tone . Had I known I wouldn’t watch it .

I contemplated leaving even before the first half of the movie because i sensed it would get more disturbing and it did .

It hangs together .it’s consistent in itself .the direction it’s headed is consistent .however I wasn’t ready for such a thing and shouldn’t have watched it .

I too am happy about the way joker is portrayed in this sequel .

I feel that dc characters are always out of touch with reality and it looks out of a place when we try to put them in real life ,say in social class structure with illnesses real life people have etc .while trying to add depth to their personality .and I believe the over the top vibes ,the melodrama kinda helps with making this story telling feeling less strained .

Kinda wish they kept the snow car scenes in with all the dead bodies because the team hasn’t seen anything as gruesome as that yet (on-screen) so we could actually see how each of them would react differently towards it. (Also wanted to see what was behind that door).  (Edit: it was more bodies :|).

Furthermore, the scene with all four of them talking about the ledger used to be longer and/or had different shot angles. (Also I think Benji’s “Oh my god!” probably could have worked depending on when and how he said it during that scene)

Guess they had it as two minutes thirty for the time but they might have changed it because it was an odd number or they just wanted to show it for longer. Also can’t tell if I feel like they should have kept “or else we’ll both be dead” because the main point for Ethan was Benji might die but, it would be true that they would both be dead. (Little side note I find it funny that they used deleted Brandt lines to make people think Brandt was there at the point). Think it was reasonable to remove Brandt’s “shutting down the IMF is a mistake you may regret” because it would just be saying already what’s being shown to us. Finally, for this ad, I am so happy they changed Brandt's line from “now we are wanted by the CIA, awesome.” To “now we are wanted by the CIA, I am so proud of us.” It just sounds way funnier with how he deadpans it.

I feel like for this (https://youtu.be/85H3z44tBoE) they should have kept Benji’s agreed, yes he’s has had a crisis of faith and his thoughts about “Am I fighting for the right side and risking my life for a world that doesn’t seem to care.” (Then Ethan saying “And sometimes the answer is no?” and Benji nods “not being proud of it.”). Because it adds a bit more depth to his character, but either way I still think that scene turned out good.

Alrighty*claps hands together* I watched this fucking movie. And I find it hilarious hilarious ppl really took what was in that movie and was like "yeah I'm him" genuinely wanting to be that guy. Shows a lot about our society today the "privilege" ppl like him get to have to even remotely even BE PATRICK BATEMAN. Uh I'm ngl I feel bad for the actor who plays him cause I hear it can be mentally taxing for a "regular" person to play a literal killer.

But aside from that, the movie everytime that nigga Patrick was on screen, genuinely terrified me. Scared the living hell out of me. I'd say this movie could be a horror but um yeah. The fact he has these "identities" so much so that at the very end of the movie he's still just "dismissed" from the crimes he committed and that really made me think of "society"

How could this white rich straight man possibly be a killer he has everything. The fact Bateman BLATANTLY SAYS "YO I KILLED OVER 40 PPL" and the dude genuinely thought he was joking is insane to me. Again the ending just SCREAMS THE PRIVILEGE IN UR FACE. I kinda can't take the movie seriously but the fact men like that exist in real time is the most serious part of it all. (Also adding to the fact, ppl would often mistake who he was also showed how all of them(business bros) are so much the same, but they want to be seen as "different" I guess)

The fact the only person that (I guess) "genuinely" cared about Bateman was the white girl that was "so nice" and she "was the girl for him all along". The god damn receptionist. THE FACT HE FLAT OUT STOPPED HIMSELF FROM KILLING HER B/c who the fuck knows. I genuinely don't think it had anything to do with her being the receptionist maybe he just wanted to actually stop? But like who could tell. (Also she is technically I guess, the only person who finds how sick he is and is still alive. And also the idea of being this "perfect" person to fit in made me wonder why do alot of killers( and yes I know, narcissists, I just don't want to be like "all narcissists are killers") think they need to Be "perfect". With Bateman it made "sense" cause he's trying to "fit in" but all that effort he puts in didn't necessarily need to be done. I think he wanted to convince himself it mattered cause when u think about "societal norms" most of it is irrelevant. And or he could've been trying to fit in so hard b/c if he didn't he'd look like a neurodivergent ass nigga around a bunch of neurotypicals. And that couldn't go well especially when ur in "corporate". He walks around with headphones always on, he talks about his special interests(music) and he draws. Uh this movie made me physically sick and why they needed to add "American Psycho" again poking at America's culture(business culture and white ppl in general) AmeriKa , it's literally true (this movie could've also popularized the jerking off of serial killers as well. .. romanticizing a serial killer romanticizing mental illness. Sunil x Russell things

- Sunil is the only one who’s seen Russell without a shirt on since they’ve been dating for a while. (I’d like to add that whoever Russell is dating in the current time would see him without the shirt because it’s based on trust I know I’ve said it before with others)

-Russell may have a candle addiction and Sunil sort of helps him support it..

-In the beginning of their relationship Russell refused to do anything gross in front of Sunil for the longest time (examples: puke, poo, blow his nose,cut his toe nails,fart ect.

-Sunil and Russell have to survive on coffee but have such different coffee tastes and it sometimes switches so they have so many different flavors and add ins stocked constantly as well as a fancy coffee maker.

-Russell tracks Sunil when he goes out not because he doesn’t trust him but because he worries.

-They watch old movies together.

-Sunil has over time figured out Russell’s cleaning style and has worked on getting it down pat so he can help with chores the “right way.”

-They people watch in public a lot.

- Russell actually enjoys being picked up more than he says he does especially when he’s tired.

- Russell has so many pillows everywhere but Sunil doesn’t mind he has his favorites.

-Sunil hates Russell’s alarm clock with a burning passion lol

-Sunil will sometimes nuzzle Russell’s nose instead of kissing him goodbye so he doesn’t embarrass him in front of others ...Russell still blushes when it happens though.

-Sunil has given up anything marshmallow related he refuses to buy or eat anything with marshmallow in it since Russell hates them so much he just thinks of it as an allergy to make life easier when people ask.
