I like to put these two photos together for a good reason. I’m in two very different mental health situations in both photos but my facial expression is almost exact in each. The first picture is about a year ago, a bad time where I was hospitalized and put back into counseling because of this. I was depressed due to family situations and an abusive relationship that I had been in for over a year at the time. I hadn’t learned to love myself either, and I was stuck in a vicious cycle of recovering and relapsing into an eating disorder. Now, the second picture I took yesterday. Yes, I have a lot going on right now. My family situation is still as bad as always, and I just went through a break up two weeks ago. However, I’ve been back in counseling for a year now, and I’ve recovered from said eating disorder and have been trying to overcome mental illness. It’s not an easy or fair battle, but for sure is a worthwhile one. If you took the time to actually read my caption and get down this far, thank you, I’m glad you’ve listened. So I'm a little late but October 10 is #worldmentalhealthday and you know I'm not gonna let that pass by unnoticed. A little over 18 months ago I got my first tattoo, subjecting myself to the dreaded needles because #projectsemicolon captured my attention and really meant something to me. Last week I got that #semicolontattoo touched up so it could look better. It's, to me, also a reflection of my journey over the last 18 months: I've been through ups and downs but I've come out stronger and more vibrant than ever. Mental health is a journey, and it's one that goes off the rails really easily, but it's an undeniable part of who I am. Inked on my body for all to see: my sentence isn't over. Neither is yours. You are the author. Take charge. Apparently it's World Mental Health day! Cool. Here's an old Haarmi doodle 😀 So. I want to tell you that getting help was one of the best things I ever did. I spent years struggling, thinking I'd learn how to deal with my shit *eventually*, but instead it very suddenly started to get worse about this time last year. I was so terrified and exhausted that I had no choice but to see a therapist. It took months to learn how to relax and to change my way of thinking, even with a strong desire to change. This has been the most challenging thing I've ever been through, but despite all my added grief from losing my beloved Timmy, I'm happy to say that I was still fully discharged from therapy a couple weeks ago! 😀 But the challenge will never be over, because caring for yourself is something you must do every day. The most important thing I learnt is what self care really is, and that cultivating healthier habits will make life easier in the long run. I still don't know if I'm in a great place, but at least I know I can be if I keep going. Looking back to how shitty I was this time last year only proves that! If you feel like you're struggling for any reason (or no reason), do yourself a favour and don't wait 'til it gets worse. We all deserve to be happy, no matter what. So it's #worldmentalhealthday2018. I've been living with mental illness for most of my life. I started therapy and my first round of meds in seventh grade. Over the years my mental illness has cost me friendships, my physical health, and years of my life that I didn't get to fully enjoy. I had to drop a second major that I desperately wanted because I couldn't handle the course load. I missed one of my best friends' bachelorette parties because I was on suicide watch. Self-care isn't bath bombs and facials; for me self-care is using Habitica to track regular meals and blood sugar tests. I'm finally in a pretty good place, but I still have my bad days. This photo was from a couple weeks ago, when despite my meds and the tools I got from my therapist I couldn't make myself feel anything but empty hopelessness. But my mental illness is just a part of me. I'm a successful library assistant, I run my knitting design business, and I'm a published writer. I have friends I love and who love me. I have hobbies that nourish my soul and give me joy.
