Italian Dyer's Notebook

Autograph manuscript, circa 1856-1866

This warped and worn nineteenth-century Italian manuscript appears to be a working manual and color inventory of a wool dyer in mid-nineteenth-century Italy. The handwritten entries are dated between 1856 and 1866, suggesting that the notebook was used and added to over a period of time. The work includes more than 500 numbered and itemized recipes for dyes. Recipes are illustrated with more than 800 wool and fabric samples adhered to the pages. The samples range in colors from shades of brown to vivid fuchsia, turquoise, and mustard. The samples include fabrics of wool, felt, and cotton, as well as raw wool and coils of yarn. Ingredients listed include mud, urine, arsenic, and vitriol. Pages 192-219 contain longer descriptions of dying processes, one attributed to Giacomo Udinese and another to Cesare Bizzi.

my petiteknit cloud sweater ᯓ ᡣ𐭩

i'm a little nervous to post my makes (and me) but here's my favorite one to start! here's it's stats ~

my first ever 100% wool sweater! and technically my first ever natural fiber make

i made it with knitpick's palette yarn in the color green tea heather, held double

knit with 5mm circular needles throughout, my favorites are my chiagoo set

my first time doing german short rows, and i totally did them wrong, but you can't tell at all!!

blocked out perfectly! i didn't meet gauge when i made my swatch, so i decided to size up to a medium to compensate. (best choice ever)

overall i'm in love with this sweater and will definitely be making another! i think if you're a beginner this pattern might be a bit difficult, but any experienced beginner and experienced maker could easily follow this pattern. 11/10 rating from me :))

natural hibiscus dye on a skein of wool!!! loooooook at the coloooooor 🥰 it also smells like rosa jamaica (the drink) which is a pleasant surprise

I had initially dyed this skein with blackberry dye but since I had also eaten most of the blackberries, it wasn��t a very deep dye and so I just over dyed it with hibiscus . I simmered that pot of hibiscus for hours and reduced as much as possible and I am very very happy I spent that time, it was worth it to get this color result !
