self expression (sĕlf'ĭk-sprĕsh'ən) n. Expression of one's own personality, feelings, or ideas, as through speech or art: "Self-expression must pass into communication for its fulfillment" (Pearl S. Buck). So how do the University of Akron students do just that? Just look here.

The University of Akron experienced a campus wide blackout when a transformer blew. This caused several mishaps such as the soccer game being postponed and several campus facilities closing such as the library and the cafeteria. All resident assistants were ordered to automatic duty. After 2 hours of darkness, the electricity was finally restored. In the screenshot above is a student tweeting from a dark Folk Hall room, she was developing photographs for one of her projects. She thought initially the power went out only in Folk Hall then later found out it was campus wide.

The 2012 Election is OVER
Can I just say I am so glad that the election is over? I was so tired of seeing yard signs, hearing debates in class, hearing radio commercials, seeing television commercials, and receiving mail from both candidates. I was over it after the first month of campaigning but I was definitely over it after I voted. I early voted 3 weeks before November 6. I was very happy and proud of myself that I went ahead and got it out of the way, BUT I wish that would have resulted in no more harrassment from the candidates.

Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others. Held annually on the fourth Saturday of October, millions of Americans are rallied into a single day of action to help change the world.
The University of Akron has participated in this national day of service for the last 7 years. 2012 marks the 8th year of our participation!
On Saturday, October 27, 2012 many University of Akron Students volunteered in the city of Akron with a variety of projects ranging from tearing down walls, taking leaves, and making blanket for babies. I participated this year and although it was rainy and cold I still enjoyed helping out at the Historical Society! Make A Difference Day was definitely a great experience!

"I don't know how I lived before I got my iPhone," I say it almost daily.  It is crazy how much people rely on their cellular devices nowadays. People are on them 24/7 especially smartphones. Smartphones are like a miniature computer that can fit in the palm of your hand or pocket. I've noticed that a lot of people are starting to seem a little less intelligent than they were before they got their smartphones.
Multiple times a day I see students walking around with their eyes glued to their cellphone screens and crossing the street in front on oncoming traffic because they are too focused on their smartphones that they forgot to look up.
Lookout Mobile Security did a study and found that 58 percent of smartphone users do not go more than an hour without checking their phones. The age range that scored highest in this area was 18 to 34, at 68 percent.
The study went even further to see when people pulled their phones out. Of the people that Lookout talked to, 30 percent had checked their phones at the dinner table, 24 percent while driving, and 10 percent at religious services.
Do you own a smartphone? Do you think you rely on it too much? How often are you on your phone?

Grand opening of Twisted Head2 Smoke Shop2. Any students who need tobacco pipes, Egyptian hookahs, vaporizers, incense, smoking accessories and more should visit this new location that claims "We Smoke the Competition!" It is located right near campus at 446 E. Exchange St. Akron, Ohio 44304. I bought some shisha for my hookah and it was great! How do you feel about these kinds of stores opening up near campus?

Three University of Akron hospitality management students carved their way to the top at the National Collegiate Fruit and Vegetable Carving Competition in Holland, Michigan, October 5-6. The carving team was made up of students Mary King, Jennifer Bogart, and Tori Cunningham. The team was lead by Chef Richard Alford, associate professor emeritus of hospitality management.
They took first place in the “overall” category of the competition with a sculpture titled “Day in the Forest”. The elaborate piece contains carvings of animals, a jungle, sea, sky and sunburst from melons, zucchini, radishes, turnips, beets and several other vegetables. The team took another first in the “compulsory” category with its University of Akron-engraved melon.
University’s student vegetable carvers will take their show on the road in coming weeks with appearances and demonstrations at:
IX Center’s Trick-or-Treat event, Oct. 20-21 and Oct. 26-28
Graduate Chef Dinner, UA’s Crystal Room Bistro, Nov.
How do you feel about the carvings?

People are afraid to accept the reality of things, and that is the prevention of growth and evolution of yourself.

Has anyone seen "the rapping guy" this semester? Did he graduate? If you are a University of Akron student and have been here for years you have probably seen or at least HEARD "the rapping guy" on campus. If you haven't, you are missing out. He walks to class with his headphones on just like a lot of students do, but instead of just walking and listening, he raps along with his music VERY LOUDLY. I haven't seen him this semester and I'm pretty bummed about it. He is pure entertainment. I heard he was an aspiring rapper. I hope things worked out for him.

The Ak-rowdies are a the group of students that can make any University of Akron game 10x better. Even if we don't win or if it rains. The Ak-rowdies are always there with their good spirits, face paint, and chants!
'The AK-ROWDIES, one of the largest student organizations at UA with almost 2000 members, have a simple goal: To cheer UA student-athletes to victory.
The group is known as the one of the best organized traveling student sections in the Mid-American Conference. And, of course, the Rowdies make their presence known at home games.
When you join, you’ll receive an official shirt, free food and priority seating at games, entry to the official “AK-ROWDIES Tailgate tent,” free road trips and so many great memories and more!'
The Ak-rowdies describe themselves as
ROOthless
Obnoxious
Wild
Dedicated
Insane
Egotistical
Students…
Do you have what it takes to be an Ak-rowdy? Have you ever seen the AK-rowdies at a game?
