#fountain pens #anyway lmao if anyone wants to come out of the woodwork and help me out i still havent found my ideal pen #must be smooth in the body bc i have a weird pen grip and other pens tend not to be as comfortable #the closest ive found is the pilot explorer but the explorer is like. corporate core the pen. like if a pen was a sleep spell.#i have high hopes for the sailor tuzu but why the FUCK is it taking so long to get into stores #also $44 as an entry level pen? that's silly frankly what world are they living in #like i want it but i also dont bc why does it cost $44 what is is bringing to the party #hopefully i can try before i buy bc if i buy it and it's not actually my ideal pen i'll beat myself up #because seriously $44? damn near every other entry level pen i can think of costs less than that

my personal hardware store ranking is fleet farm > home depot > menards > lowes

#fleet farm has EVERYTHING. you can buy a tractor there #home depot smells nice and has strong nostalgia associations for me #menards is kind of mid tbh but they get props for a killer lighting section and their ad jingle. plus their cheese curds are rly good #lowes is. lowes #my dad did woodworking and stuff when i was a kid so my sister and i spent a lot of time in hardware stores #david.txt

what i thought i signed up for getting stardew valley: farming and resource game, dating sim, horror undertones (caves, fish, etc)

what i got: getting emotionally attached to a small town life being encroached upon Big Corporation(tm) and its idiosyncratic residents with their backstories

#MAN growing up rural all my life ive LIVED this #main difference i didnt farm or fish but i knew ppl in my community who did #we had a blacksmith and various kinds of farmers and a local greenhouse and a woodworker chainsaw artist #and a fashionista who had a small vintage/thrift shop #the mayor would pay for everyone whenever he visited the local cafe (we were a dry county / no bars)#we're landlocked so no fishing....#but theres a local ruin and the national park #we had a tiny ass library #the national park / rangers office had cool shit just like gunther wtf !!!#OUR GROCERY STORE CLOSED DOWN #it closed down EXACTLY because a dollar store chain moved in !!#and then the dollar stoer chain couldnt keep up with the demand #so the gas station had to sell milk and eggs and basic groceries but it Still wasnt enough #so our community got together and sold their own produce milk eggs etc #and raised enough money to bring the grocery store back

hundreds of people have said this already but I don't agree with the premise that "being raised using modern technology makes people better at technology" in fact it's probably the opposite. modern tablets and chromebooks and whatever have gotten so shiny and hyperoptimized that they implicitly discourage people from learning troubleshooting skills.

#this post brought to you by #a stupid instagram comment of the 'not letting your 3-year-old have a tablet is stunting his ability to use tech😡' variety #get real! playing app store games on a sticky tablet confers no useful computer knowledge!#things that may actually be helpful in fostering an ability to use computers well (based on my own experiences):#giving children chances to solve their own problems #encouraging logic and math puzzles (appropriately complex jigsaw puzzles; sudoku & minesweeper; Encyclopedia Brown & similar books)#encouraging hobbies that involve making physical objects (woodworking; leatherworking; sewing; crocheting; knitting)#non-trivial research skills including assessing source quality! (this can tie into the hobbies thing if you play your cards right)#[however for credentials all I've got is 'undergrad compsci TA at a pretty decent university' so take this with a grain of salt lol]#[can't say which though. say no to self-doxxing]
