Channeling definite mermaid vibes today with this super cute throwback favorite dress from @diaandco and some mermaid/sea witch inspired hair clips from @puravida . I have a special place in my heart for mermaids, because in my mind even have a mermaid did grow land legs and become part of our world like Ariel, they probably wouldn’t be able to walk, and I love the idea that there is nothing wrong with moving through the world in different ways whether that’s with legs, fins, or a wheelchair! I love this look, but I also want to just put it out there but I did not wake up like this and fashion and beauty are not effortless and it’s time that we talk more about that because pretending that actively engaging in beauty and fashion doesn’t take effort does a disservice to everyone, because it creates the expectation that people owe you being pretty or put together to have the right to exist in the world and they absolutely don’t. I do my hair and make up for me, because I want to, because it makes me feel better and more confident, but I absolutely do not owe anyone looking pretty all the time! ID: a photo carousel featuring photos of Karin, a white, plus sized, disabled woman in a wheelchair with blonde hair and hazel eyes. In the photos where her outfit is visible she is wearing a black and white striped dress with puffy sleeves and white sneakers with a pink and green floral print. In the photos focused on her hair she is wearing two sliver hair barrettes, one in the shape of a seashell and one in the shape of a starfish. Her make up includes A rosy pink blush, purple iridescent highlighter, and a fuchsia pink lip. #womendontoweyoupretty #plussizefashion #plussizefashionblogger #plussizeinfluencers #plussizeinfluencer #plussizefashionblogger #plusfashion #psootd #plussizebeautyblogger #fatdisabledworthy #fatfashion #disabledfashion #disabilityirl #disabledbeauty #mydiastyle #tedbakershoes #tedbaker #puravidabracelets #styleatanysize #styletherapy #styletherapist #stylehasnosize #fashionactivism #fashionblogger #fashioninspo (at Fort Lauderdale, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cbga-qYrq77/?utm_medium=tumblr

REVIEW FOR WOMEN DON’T OWE YOU PRETTY BY FLORENCE GIVEN ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall, I found its book to be an excellent introduction to feminism and the issues surrounding the patriarchy. It is not intended to be a textbook or an in-depth examination of the topic, rather it is designed to open discussion and encourage change and self-reflection. The book covers a range of topics, including the patriarchy and the effect of the male gaze, recovering from trauma, learning to love yourself first, and red flags in relationships. The book is written in a friendly and accessible manner and is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I loved her open discussion of the topics with little bits of humour, and the illustrations inside are amazing! I'm definitely going to check out Florence's merch. One quotation in particular made me extremely emotional: 'Imagine all of the past versions of yourself... they are so proud of you.' This being said, I couldn't give this book five stars. The book doesn't say anything ground-breaking, which is absolutely fine, but I did also find it a little repetitive towards the end. There were a few parts that didn't sit right with me, not necessarily because of any of the content, but the way it was written. For example, Florence discusses racism, but even in this discussion the style of writing seemed to suggest a sense of otherness. The book constantly mentions 'Black people', 'people of colour', 'trans people', and mentions 'read more books by people of colour'. It appears that she is assuming these people won't read the book, that only white females will read it? Perhaps that is me nitpicking, but it just didn't quite sit right with me from her position of privilege, especially when she talks so much about it. She also talks a lot about her personal experience. I understand why she did this, but I did feel that perhaps it created a sense of disconnection in some parts. #womendontoweyoupretty #florencegiven #feminism #feministbooks #booksonfeminism #bookreview #fourstarreview #fourstarbookreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CSPqvseLK2U/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hello everyone and hope you’re doing well. Today I’m sharing what I’m #currentlyreading (as always, a LOT) because clearly I enjoy a challenge! 🤣 On my Kindle I’m reading three things - Dead Head by @ceejayismeeejay the third book in the Sweetpea series which I’m buddy reading with the lovely @booksta.gem Then I’m also buddy reading Before Her Eyes by Jack Jordan with @buddyreadbooknook Our group read Do No Harm recently by the author and loved it so instantly wanted to read more! Finally on my Kindle I’m buddy reading Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels. This was the second ever winner of the @womensprize or the Orange prize as it was back then. Pictured book sleeve from @paperandword My audiobook listen is The Opposite Of Butterfly Hunting: The Tragedy and the Glory of Growing Up by Evanna Lynch (the actress played Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies). I’m also continuing to make my way through Light Rains with Mr B which we’re reading together up until Feb 2023. Onto the books pictured! 😂 I’m just starting Reservoir 13 by Jon McGregor. One of my favourite authors do can’t wait for this. I’m finishing up Jude The Obscure with #thegreatthomashardyreadalong2022 it’s been both heartbreaking 💔 and epic! Voyager by Diana Gabaldon is the third book in the Outlander series and I’m about 150 pages in. My current re-read is Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. I’m loving being back in Ursula’s world so much! 😍 My current nonfiction is Women Don’t Owe You Pretty by Florence Given. Nearly halfway through this and the illustrations are brilliant. Finally I have the penultimate book in the @womensprize longlist, Creatures Of Passage by Morowa Yejidé. So intrigued by this one! So that makes it 11 books I’m currently reading. That’s fine right??? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #multibookreader #fugitivepieces #annemichaels #deadhead #cjskuse #beforehereyes #jackjordan #reservoir13 #jonmcgregor #judetheobscure #thomashardy #voyager #dianagabaldon #lifeafterlife #kateatkinson #womendontoweyoupretty #florencegiven #creaturesofpassage #morowayejidé #womensprizelonglist2022 #womensprizewinners https://www.instagram.com/p/Cieh5imgogF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Choosing yourself will always disappoint some people. The sooner we accept this and make peace with it, the better.” 💄✨💄 Trigger warnings for sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape. ✨ Women Don’t Owe You Pretty by Florence Given is a mix between a self-help book, a memoir and a feminist nonfiction book, and if I’m being honest, this book lacked the capacity to really grip me. While the book hit on some incredibly important topics, it felt like Given never truly delved into them. Parts of this book felt like I’d read a lot but nothing at all, but some parts of this just reiterated how I already felt. I think that this would be an ideal book for young teens or teenagers who are first discovering feminism for themselves, rather than for adults who may have already looked into/read other feminist memoirs. The book as a whole was beautifully written and easy to read, but I feel like it lacked the substance and depth I was hoping from it. I think while it aimed to talk about some complex and relevant issues, it fell short as Given seemed to be presenting her opinions as fact, without back supporting evidence. Since the completion of this book, I’ve read some reviews and found that this book was basically a plagiarised version of Chidera Eggerue’s “What a Time to be Alone”, which I will definitely be picking up soon! 💄✨💄 Women Don’t Owe You Pretty is book 57 for 2021. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2021 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #womendontoweyoupretty #florencegiven #feministnonfiction #booksaboutselflove #booksaboutbodypositivity https://www.instagram.com/p/CT1anu7Po1y/?utm_medium=tumblr

Research: Women Don’t Owe You Pretty
Pulling out some of my favourite quotes from the book.
Women Don't Owe You Pretty is an accessible leap into feminism, for people at all stages of their journey who are seeking to reshape and transform the way they view themselves. In a world that tells women we're either not enough or too much, it's time we stop directing our anger and insecurities onto ourselves, and start fighting back to re-shape the toxic structures of our patriarchal society. It touches on progressive feminist discussion, covering topics such as body image, toxic beauty standards, and identity-building in a world still plagued by misogyny and sexism.
“The illustrated book has taken Instagram by storm, with the hashtag #womendontoweyoupretty generating over 6,000 posts on Instagram. Given frequently shares aesthetic pictures of her book that have been snapped by her followers and she enjoys a cult following.
Provided by her Instagram page, Given has a very ready audience for her brand of contemporary feminism. Alice Porter commented in her article ‘How Instagram made books cool again’ on the aestheticization of books on social media. Women Don’t Owe You Pretty has been able to capitalise on the Instagram algorithm as the retro cover pops up everywhere on social media. The publication of Women Don’t Owe You Pretty has confirmed Florence Given’s authority as a spokesperson for Generation Z and beyond.”
- Sourched from author Maisie Scott for Manchester Media Group, 2020.
I felt like looking into this book and it’s success was essential to my project, as Given’s success has been groundbreaking within the topic I am focusing on. Her use of social media has also started a new way of communicating her message, using both powerful words and images that attract attention and result in reshares.
The illustrative style is also something I do find inspiring as I want my work to be heavily illustrative too. Looking at how she creates her aesthetic and the mood of the book, I will take this into consideration when deciding on my own branding.
