Shortly after Donald Trump’s inauguration eight years ago, half a million people headed onto the streets of Washington DC to protest the new president. Now, as Mr Trump prepares for his return to office, an attempt to repeat the event and stir up mass resistance to the Republican fell flat. One unimpressed attendee described it as “disappointingly tiny”, while another said turnout was “unfortunate”. For an event that billed itself as the “People’s March”, not a lot of people ended up marching. Protesters lined the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday to listen to speakers who branded Mr Trump a “Nazi”, condemned the evils of colonisation, and declared that anti-Semitism had been “weaponised”. The location, which faces onto the Washington Monument and beyond that, the rotunda of the US Capitol where the president-elect will be inaugurated on Monday, was unquestionably busier than usual. But compared to the Women’s March of 2017, which is estimated to have drawn three times more people than the audience for Mr Trump’s first inauguration, it was positively serene. “It’s disappointingly tiny… the energy is very different this time,” a woman handing out a communist newspaper to the dwindling crowds told The Telegraph. As she spoke, one of a succession of speakers who had been charged with geeing up the audience called Mr Trump a “fascist” and announced: “We will not be silent.” She got a limp cheer from those still hanging about by the frozen waters of the reflecting pool. About halfway into the speeches, an abortion rights sign that had been folded in half and thrown into a bin could be seen. Next to it, in a second bin, was a People’s March sign.
Even a Ben & Jerry’s tent – the liberal ice cream company sponsored the event – where treats were being handed out seemed to be struggling to boost numbers.
...
At the start of the demonstration, they were charging $15 for a T-shirt. By the end, you could pick one up for a third of the price. “Get your ‘f— your Trump’ right here,” one man yelled, displaying a board full of badges bearing the slogan. “‘F— your Trump’, five dollars!” In just a matter of hours, Mr Trump will take the oath of office for a second time and will move back into the White House. By that point, his protesters will have moved on, the People’s March will be a dim memory, and the merchants will be selling Trump inauguration T-shirts instead.
This is hilarious. There's some more great stuff in the article so I wholeheartedly suggest you read it. My favorite line is
Mr Lin said the low turnout was “unfortunate” but that it did not mean that “hardly anybody is concerned”, adding: “I think it’s just that they’re going to do their resisting and protesting online, at home.”
They're totally gonna resist in their bedrooms in between Fortnite games, you guys. Everyone's so concerned about Trump that they might post about it on social media. LOLOLOLOL
What a difference four years and the almost complete collapse of left wing governance in the west makes, huh?

A Trump judge sends Southwest Airlines to right-wing reeducation camp
Ruth Marcus does an excellent job of pointing out how another Trump appointed judge (from Texas) is stomping on the Constitution when it comes to the separation of church and state. The judge in this case doesn't seem to understand the difference between people being allowed to hold religious beliefs and religious people harassing others who don't share their religious beliefs. The article is well worth reading. Here are some excerpts:
Another day, another extremist ruling by another extremist Trump judge, and this decision — from Texas, no surprise — is straight out of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The judge held lawyers for Southwest Airlines in contempt of court for their actions in a religious-discrimination case brought by a former flight attendant and ordered them to undergo “religious liberty training.” And not just any instruction, but training conducted by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a conservative group that litigates against same-sex marriage, transgender rights and abortion rights. [emphasis added] The issue arises from a lawsuit filed by Charlene Carter, a flight attendant for more than 20 years and a longtime antagonist of the Southwest flight attendants union. In 2017, after union members attended the Women’s March under a “Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants” banner, Carter sent Facebook messages to the union president containing graphic antiabortion messages.
[See more under the cut.]
“This is what you supported during your Paid Leave with others at the Women’s MARCH in DC …. You truly are Despicable in so many ways,” Carter wrote in one message accompanying a video of an aborted fetus. After the union president complained, Southwest fired Carter, saying her conduct “crossed the boundaries of acceptable behavior,” was “inappropriate, harassing, and offensive,” and “did not adhere to Southwest policies and guidelines.” An arbitrator found that Southwest had just cause for the firing. Carter, represented by the National Right to Work Committee, sued, claiming Southwest and the union violated her rights under federal labor laws and Title VII. The federal job-bias law bars employers from discriminating on the basis of religion, and Carter claimed she was dismissed because of her sincerely held religious beliefs against abortion. [...] The scary part is what came next. [U.S. District Judge Brantley] Starr instructed the airline to “inform Southwest Flight Attendants that, under Title VII, [Southwest] may not discriminate against Southwest flight attendants for their religious practices and beliefs.” Instead, Southwest said in a message to staff that the court “ordered us to inform you that Southwest does not discriminate against our Employees for their religious practices and beliefs.” This sent Starr into orbit.... “In the universe we live in — the one where words mean something — Southwest’s notice didn’t come close to complying with the Court’s order,” Starr said. “To make matters worse,” he said, Southwest had circulated a memo about the decision to its employees repeating its view that Carter’s conduct was unacceptable and emphasizing the need for civility. “Southwest’s speech and actions toward employees demonstrate a chronic failure to understand the role of federal protections for religious freedom,” Starr decreed. He proceeded to order three Southwest lawyers to undergo eight hours of religious-liberty training — a move he described as “the least restrictive means of achieving compliance with the Court’s order.” Luckily, Starr observed, “there are esteemed nonprofit organizations that are dedicated to preserving free speech and religious freedom.” [...] Adjectives fail me here. This is not even close to normal.... the notion of subjecting lawyers to a reeducation campaign by the likes of the ADF is tantamount to creating a government-endorsed thought police. Imagine the uproar — and I’m not suggesting these groups are in any way comparable — if a liberal-leaning federal judge ordered instruction on women’s rights (those are constitutionally protected, too) by Planned Parenthood. [...] This is the alarming legacy that former president Donald Trump has left us — a skewed bench that he would augment if reelected. The Trump judges seem to be competing among themselves for who can engage in the greatest overreach. [...] Conservatives are quick to balk at anything resembling the order that Starr issued when they disagree with the underlying principle. [...] I need no excuses for calling this what it is: a reeducation program — outrageous, unconstitutional and an abuse of judicial authority. [emphasis added]

The 2017 Women’s March at the Monument in Washington DC, known to be the largest single-day protest in Modern U.S. history. The march ensued Trump’s inauguration against Hilary Clinton, and it was prompted by his several remarks suggesting that you can get away with gender-based attacks as long as you have power. I was 15 years old, and a friend’s mom took us to the protest and ensured our safety. I will never forget.

Joanna Walters and Edward Helmore at The Guardian:
Eight years since its gargantuan first protests as a reaction to the incoming president being serially accused of sexual misconduct and misogyny and campaigning on restricting reproductive rights, the Women’s March on Saturday reprised in the nation’s capital before the return of that man to the White House – with, as in 2017, spin-off rallies taking place in various other US cities. Rebranded and reorganized, the protest was given a new name by organizers, the People’s March, as a means to broaden support, especially during a difficult and introspective time for progressive organizing after Donald Trump’s decisive win in November. Once again, Trump beat a Democratic nominee who, if she had won, would have been the first female president of the United States. The Republican takes the oath of office on Monday to become the 47th president, having beaten Kamala Harris in 2024 more solidly even than he did Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. Since the last time Trump was in the Oval Office, he has been found liable in civil court for sexual abuse, as well as convicted in criminal court of a form of election fraud for paying off adult film star Stormy Daniels and disguising the transaction. And the US supreme court justices he chose tipped the balance of America’s highest court to the right and helped overturn Roe v Wade, the ruling that allowed the national right to seek an abortion and that had stood for almost 50 years. Women outraged over Trump’s 2016 presidential win flocked to Washington DC in 2017 two days before his inauguration and organized large rallies in cities throughout the country, building the base of a grassroots movement that became known as the Women’s March. It marked one of the largest single-day demonstrations in US history. At the time, Evvie Harmon, global coordinator of the marches, said initial and unofficial estimates put the crowd in Washington at more than 1 million and the attendance at events worldwide in excess of 3 million. This year in the capital, organisers said they expected 50,000 marchers but DC police estimated 25,000 – which included pro-science and pro-climate-action protests – amid the realization that a majority of votes for Trump can no longer be seen as an aberration or experiment.
This past Saturday, the Women’s March lived on in a downscaled fashion called the People's March.

I'm slowly beginning to realize that it was maybe not as ordinary as I thought to have this experience, but I know I was not remotely the only kid knocking around in those spaces, and most of the ones I was in had pretty gigantic overlaps with one another.
It's a mind fuck to find yourself involved in not one but two online communities trading speculative theories and making stupid jokes online about emojis as a teenager, making your own comments and forming your own ideas... and then find those ideas showing up in more and more prestigious and formal places. Wait. Shit. 3 — I've been in nonbinary communities since at latest 2009. That's not quite teenagery but I was definitely reading along in autism liberation circles as well as asexual or queer spaces by probably about 2004. It's such a weird place to watch people successfully pull off almost silent social revolutions.
Uh, and then I got gay immigration married in the year between Windsor and Obergefell, and then there's the two years of climate change-driven housing and the time at the 2017 DC women's march where on the night before the Trump inauguration my grandparents abandoned me and my spouse on the side of the road after picking a truly apocalyptic fight, which was both absurdly dramatic and absurdly reflective of what felt like the zeitgeist.
Do—this is objectively a list of unusual experience that yields a particular set of insights, right? That's not just me imagining things to feel special or something?
Is—is that self esteem?

LENA YENER —
cis female & she/her
32
august 8, 1991
artist / owner of the broken spine
south addition
biography
lightening round —
born and raised in washington dc. parents emigrated from turkey. father was a diplomat and mother still works as a translator/interpreter
had a very strict and conservative upbringing. suffered abuse at the hands of a family member and was kept in silence about it
went to nyc for university and her first art project. the first exlorations into her art and ideas began with photography at music festivals, art directing for advertisements and magazines, and music videos
met her first partner and began a relationship with them during this time, even asked them to move back to washington dc with her when her time in nyc came to an end
the relationship always felt as though it were missing something and as though lena kept coming up short. when a new project came up and lena was to relocate for her work (to anchorage) she asked her partner to come with her and proposed. the no on both counts was devastating but she poured her pain into her work. plus it went along with the theme of her life
the move to anchorage was only meant to be temporary but lena ended up in a rebound relationship that fulfilled a void and she ended up staying even after her project was complete. making a home in anchorage and traveling when necessary
upon settling into anchorage, lena opened a book bar called the broken spine and has too much fun running it
as with anything else in her life relating to love, the rebound relationship eventually came to an end. leaving lena to stop making her work about heartbreak and push for something greater
a few of her projects/series have brought her international attention and acclaim. the first being, ‘i could not protect her’, a multimedia work, both her signature cinematic still photography along with a silent film detail her journey though abuse and the unchecked actions by the abuser. the next being her series titled “3ieb!” in arabic / “shame on me!” in english. a series that equally caused an uproar and gave voice to hundreds of thousands of middle eastern women all over the world
recently lena has been dipping her toe into video work once again, beginning to shift away from her decade long photography medium by publishing a book of a compilation of all her work. a little different from the music videos she’d produced in the past and her recent foray into short film, lena is interested in moving forward in long-form video work
the positive shift in her love life, experiencing real love for the first time without the usual toxicity she’d fallen into in the past and finally experiencing healthy love has also made a big difference

Finally put my pride flag up this weekend. I bought it originally for the January 2017 Women's March in DC, which was one of the top five absolute fuck-all obliteratingly intense experiences of my life, and I like to think she carries some of that energy still.

Last weekend the Texas-based white supremacist group Patriot Front took to the streets of Washington, D.C., to rally in the nation’s capital.
Law enforcement was on hand to make sure no one from either side lashed out and disrupted the peace.
Related: ‘Huge Surprise’: Fox Political Commentator Tomi Lahren Dragged for Calling White Supremacy a ‘Boogeyman’ That Is Used to ‘Fire Up’ the Masses
On Saturday, May 13, the self-styled patriots were lined up in rows wearing boots, tan pants, blue shirts, white face masks and tan dad caps with the logo of the organization in the center as they presented themselves for their demonstration. According to videos that circulated on social media, various members carried upside-down American flags, shields, and drums as they walked.
The signs bore their mantra, “Reclaim America,” and the members chanted “life, liberty, victory.”
The Washington D.C. branch of the Anti-Defamation League released a statement expressing its disgust at the rally.
“We are disgusted by the actions of Patriot Front today in DC. This white supremacist group known for its flash demonstrations marched on the National Mall carrying banners spewing their hateful rhetoric,” the civil rights organization stated. “Since 2019, Patriot Front has been responsible for the vast majority of white supremacist propaganda distributions in the US. The group has neo-Nazi roots and held four large demonstrations in several cities in 2022. We strongly condemn their presence and messages of hate.”
Also in 2019, the FBI established the Domestic Terrorism-Hate Crimes Fusion Cell, a division created to combat domestic terrorism in the country and fight for justice for victims of hate crimes.
The ADL published a report in March that showed a 38 percent rise in white supremacist activity from 2021 to 2022. This number represented over 6,700 incidents that transpired over the year span, according to Newsweek.
Fueling the rise is a belief in the “replacement theory.” Some 66 percent of white Christian nationalism sympathizers and 81 percent of adherents believe immigrants are “invading our country and replacing our cultural and ethnic background.”
Religion and white nationalism have been twin spirits for over a hundred years, with many early white supremacist groups considering their missions sanctioned by God.
The University of Chicago reported in 2017 the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan, America’s oldest hate group, in the 1920s. was rooted in “fierce religious bigotry” and “xenophobia.” Those themes echoed those that inspired the group’s founding during Reconstruction, when many whites believed the newly emancipated Blacks were going to take over their nation, drive crime up, and infect the nation (and white women) with their sexual depravity.
Like the Patriot Front, the KKK lived by a concept of “one hundred percent Americanism.”
Kelly Baker, an essayist on the topic for the university’s religion and culture forum, said, “Religion remains a prominent part of the Klan … though many would like to pretend that it’s not.”
“The changing social climate in the U.S., including immigration, urbanization, and the migration of African Americans, made the Klan’s white, patriotic, and Protestant message appealing to white men and white women,” Baker added. “Their popular nativism was a backlash to the changing demographics and the changing culture of the nation.”
Ultimately, Baker says The Klan’s appeal is because it tells “a story of the importance of white Protestants from the nation’s founding until the 1920s, and their artifacts—the robes, the fiery cross, and the American flag—materialized the order’s commitment to Protestantism, white supremacy, and 100% Americanism.”
Like its masked social descendants the Patriot Front, the KKK also marched on Washington D.C. almost 100 years ago. In 1925 and 1926, the Klan organized two parades to canvass Pennsylvania Avenue. Reports say thousands attended both marches, with 30,000 being the accepted number for the latter demonstration.
Saturday’s Patriot Front march was considerably smaller.
The Patriot Front was founded in 2017 by Thomas Rousseau in Texas. Members of the organization “define themselves as American fascists or American nationalists who are focused on preserving America’s identity as a European-American one.”

hunter pulled the ultimate lottery ticket at birth . born the only child to a banking heiress and business mogul . learning to take full advantage of his silver spoon life at a young age . gifts and spontaneous trips where how his parents showed their love , often leaving their son to his own devices while they focused on their careers and public image . mostly cared for by a revolving door of nanny’s ( thanks to mother dearests jealousy of another women getting closer to her son than she was ) . when his parents were around , the walls of their parisian estate were filled with arguing over his father’s endless affairs . it was unbearable for a young hunter and he quickly grew a resentment towards any woman who wasn’t his mother that got too close to his father .
the move to the states happened when he was six . his parents relationship had fallen entirely by the wayside and his mother decided to move to new york city with her son . unbeknownst to the public his parents were living in entirely separate countries for nearly seven years . during this time hunter spent the school months in america and his summers with his dad in paris . from a young age he’d taken a liking to soccer and it became clear very early on to both his parents and coaches he was incredibly talented . a young prodigy , the massive ego was inevitable . at the big dogs of the soccer world noticed him , at thirteen he moved to barcelona were he joined fc barcelona’s youth academy . just under two years in the academy , he rapidly rose in the team ranks and made the first team at just sixteen . despite his young age , he quickly rose as one of the world’s best soccer players proving early suspicions of his level of talent correct .
despite his talent and fan fare , his personal life and overall attitude has long threatened to undermine his career . a career laced with scandal for over a decade . early on in life , things had been perfectly laid out for him , all he had to do was follow the script . succeed in whatever he does , smile and wave when out with his parents , and never hang out with the wrong crowd , in simpler words : don’t embarrass the family . so long as he followed his parents lead , there was the silent promise that he could do what he wanted behind closed door , and that he did . but with a fame all of his own his antics became much harder to conceal . dubbed a diva on the turf by many naysayers , a number of unsportsmanlike behavior reported ( but never getting any major consequences for ) , strings of scorned woman in and out of his life , and an affinity for night life that could put jordan belfort to shame . the most damaging report came in 2019 , when a fight broke out during one of his infamous yacht parties in the french rivera . boat docked by a rooftop bar where hunter was reported to have gotten into an altercation with another party goer ( only one of a long string of altercations he’s been reported to have ) , the fight only ending once hunter lifted the other guy up and threw him overboard . the guy later suing hunter for over a million dollar . it was a point in many’s eyes where it had become clear hunter valmont was a monster . a narrative he doesn’t particularly love or hate .
his parents on the other hand couldn’t hate anything more than his public persona , noting on various occasions to him that he is routinely breaking their only rule set in place for him . with his inheritance on the line he has tried his hand at cleaning up his image with his parents help in the last couple of years but a leopard can never truly change it’s spots .
𝖑𝖆𝖞𝖊𝖗 𝖙𝖍𝖗𝖊𝖊 . facts .
as his father’s only child , he stands to inherit everything the old man has when the time comes . allowing him the comfort of knowing what his life has in store for him when his soccer career does inevitably come to an end : heading vortex enterprises an international hospitality company . although his antics have put conditions on his inheritance , facing the potential of being taken off the will if he can’t clean up his act .
started a charity in 2017 for underprivileged kids , the park project . a category of people in this world he has true compassion for , now that he’s a bit older . throughout the year he uses the money donated as a way to go into low income parts of cities and better public schools , start up after school programs for free , and open food banks for families in need of a little bit of assistance . holding an annual charity gala for these kids , where kids from the community are the guests of honor and awarded with scholarships , clothing and food vouchers . since , it has become his best quality that many don’t even know about because he started it under the guise of a pseudonym ( lee park ) , starting the charity without the need of praise or approval but simply because he cared enough to do so . it’s out of character and just about anyone he tells doesn’t believe he’s actually the one behind the charity .
a notorious serial dater . always having a new girl on his arm . he’s never had much of an issue getting whatever girl he wants but has a tendency of ruining whatever relationship he gets into one way or another -- cheating , excessive arguments , ghosting , name a poor way to end a relationship and hunter probably has experience with it .
extravagance is a personality trait to him . luxury cars , a home in the french rivera with a yacht with his name etched into it docked in the backyard , fashion show appearances , sending one of a kind gifts as apologies , dinners worth over a grand , spontaneous trips out of the country . he has money and he’s never been all that afraid to throw it around .
an instigator through and through . he’s fairly observant and is able to pick up on what irritates other’s the most and pokes and prods until they reach their breaking point , out of pure boredom . he loves a good fight and has a tendency to be able to twist a story to favor him in almost all situations .
𝖑𝖆𝖞𝖊𝖗 𝖋𝖔𝖚𝖗 . wanted connections .
i’ll put something here one day !

January 23rd, 2025
The fascists who took power on Monday will not give it up without being overthrown.
No hyperbole. No LARP. The big tech oligarchy is paraded in plain sight. On DAY ONE Elon Musk gave a nazi salute to an adoring crowd. They will rig 2028 and beyond. The ripple effect will be felt on European doorsteps soon enough, as the worst people in UK politics flocked to the inauguration like flies to shit, desperate for endorsement and backing.
And yet where is our broadchurch resistance of leftists and liberals? The Women's March in 2017 attracted over 200,000 attendees in DC alone and over 5 million worldwide. Apparently this had been rebranded 'the People's March'— codswallop in my opinion. A betrayal of the original cause. Maybe if certain radical activist circles hadn't relentlessly mocked 'white women in pink pussy hats' and demoralised a demo engaging in grassroots activism for the first time, there'd have been a better turnout. Maybe we'd be more prepared to fight this. How dare they scron women for referencing their anatomy when it's their bodily autonomy being violated.
I think Trump being gifted the popular vote also replaced people's sense of righteous injustice with a brutal and bitter defeat. The cold, hard reality is that this is just what a lot of American people want. They identify with it, they crave it; the most grotesque caricature of all bad things American, and they can't get enough of it.
I don't see how the United States gets out of this through conventional democratic means. I fear they may be leading towards, or already in a years of lead-type scenario, with lone wolf extremists committing acts of terror and violence, missing the mass movement which is necessary. But now is not the time to lick our wounds and give up. There is always hope. As the late, great Tony Benn once said:
"There is no final victory as there is no final defeat. There is just the same battle, to be fought over and over. So toughen up, bloody toughen up."

Watch: People's March brings thousands to streets of Washington DCThousands of mostly female demonstrators took to the streets of Washington DC on Saturday to rally against President-elect Donald Trump two days ahead of his inauguration.The People's March - previously known as the Women's March - has taken place every year since 2017.A coalition of groups organised the movement with the stated aim of confronting "Trumpism", according to its website. Smaller protests against Trump were held in New York City and on the other side of the country in Seattle.The rallies coincide with Trump's arrival to the nation's capital for a series of weekend events in the lead-up to his swearing-in ceremony on Monday.Watch: Thousands gather in Washington to protest Trump inaugurationSaturday's People's March in Washington DC drew smaller numbers than its predecessors.Organisers had expected 50,000 people. About 5,000 turned up. The protesters gathered at three parks before marching to the Lincoln Memorial for the rally.Getty ImagesThe groups behind the march are described on its website as holding "intersecting identities" and having "varied issue-based interests" with different causes such as climate change, immigration and women's rights.Women who gathered in Washington to join the People's March told the BBC they had a variety of motivations.One protester, Brooke, said she wanted to show her support for abortion access."I'm really not happy with the way our country's voted," she said. "I'm really sad that our country's leaned towards a president that's already failed us once and that we did not nominate a female candidate."Another woman, Kayla, said it's a mix of emotions that brought her out to the streets of the nation's capital."Honestly, I'm just mad, I'm sad, I'm overwhelmed," she said.Getty ImagesThe first iteration of the People's March came together after Trump defeated Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016.Women called for a protest the day after Trump's first inauguration and hundreds of thousands responded.The movement spread beyond the nation's capital with millions of women across the US carrying signs railing against the Republican president and sporting pink knit "pussy hats" - a reference to a leaked tape in which Trump had bragged about grabbing women's genitals.The Women's March remained a key part of the so-called resistance to Trump's agenda in the years that followed.But none of the subsequent marches have been on the same scale.Trump, meanwhile, arrived in Washington DC later on Saturday to begin his inaugural festivities with a private event featuring fireworks at his golf club in the Virginia suburbs.Getty ImagesOrganisers of the march said they aimed to confront Trump by "drawing on past successes and effective strategies against autocrats".A small group of Trump supporters were at the Washington Monument on Saturday. Noticing the men in red Make America Great Again hats, one People's March leader with a megaphone approached chanting: "No Trump, no KKK."One of the men, Timothy Wallis, told the Associated Press news agency his friends had just bought the Trump hats from a street vendor.Mr Wallis, 58, of Pocatello, Idaho, said the People's March protesters had "every right" to demonstrate, though he said he was confused by the rancour."It's sad where we're at as a country," he said.Getty ImagesAnother protester the BBC spoke to, came to Washington specifically for the march. Susie came in from the San Francisco area to demonstrate with her sister, Anne, who lives nearby. They both attended the Women's March after Trump's first inauguration and came back in their "pussy hats".Susie recalled the crowds of people in 2017. She said she hoped people would still take to the streets against Trump's policies."This time the stakes are higher," she said. "Trump has been emboldened. He's got the billionaire class and the tech class bowing down."Anne also said she recognised the protesters are "out of touch" with a lot of America. Trump won all seven swing states and the popular vote last November. But she added: "We're still here, and we will resist."Holly Honderich and Alex Lederman contributed to this reporting atOptions = 'key' : '6c396458fda3ada2fbfcbb375349ce34', 'format' : 'iframe', 'height' : 60, 'width' : 468, 'params' : ;
