posting these all together bc I tried to find them as references for a fic I was working on & I got so angy--
they're all by the amazing Lucas Werneck, who tbh is 1 of the only artists I trust to draw women. They always have plausible, comfy body types & I loved when he redesigned a bunch of the X-Men's costumes* 😁 anyway:
Marvel ladies in formal wear, inspired by Adam Hughes (DC ladies)
Jean = Jessica Chastain, Emma = Elsa Hosk, Ororo = Willow Smith
X-Women in formal wear ♥
*this person turned Werneck's X-Men concept art into cover art!!

A Night at the Opera, Part II
What to wear?
From The Art of Dressing Well: “The hair should be dressed as for a large evening party, and artificial flowers, jewels, feathers, ribbons, or any style of head-dress peculiar to the fashion may be worn.” “Jewelry must be worn according to the dress, but more is allowable than on most occasions, and the glittering gems are very effective in the brilliant light of a superb opera house.”

James Tissot (French, 1836-1902) • La Mondain (The Lady of Fashion) • 1883-85 • Private collection
There are myths about Victorian women's dress requirements that must be debunked. Firstly, only the ultra-rich could afford to have enough outfits to accommodate the many activities of a busy day. The reality was that women added and shed certain accessories for different activities, without changing their dress five times a day. If she was wearing an afternoon dress but going for a walk, she wouldn't necessarily run to change into a specific walking dress but instead find a hat and parasol and perhaps take off her shawl and replace it with a cape.
Likewise if she were to be invited to the opera. The dress she would choose wouldn't be one that could only be worn to the opera. Instead, the Victorian women would choose her most formal dress, add her best jewelry, and if she had them, wear an opera cape and bonnet. If she did not possess the latter, she could borrow them or make do with her best coat. That woman may not have been among the fashionistas in the audience, as described below, but maybe she enjoyed the opera and didn't care. I get a bit of pleasure imaging that at least a few women didn't give a toss about what others thought! This in spite of my interest in fashion history!
One source stated that it was typical for women (and perhaps men?) to dress according to where they sat but it was not elaborated upon. I assume the more expensive the seating, the fancier the dress.

“Well-dressed as well as handsome ladies are looked for in the audience of an opera, and it is out of harmony with the scene and surroundings to see sombre draperies, heavy bonnets, and dull faces. Ladies are supposed to be seen, as well as to see, and are often the most beautiful part of the display. They should not spoil the beauty of the auditorium by wrapping themselves in cloaks or shawls.” -The Art of Dressing Well

Most of the time when someone tries to use "women can wear pants but men can't wear skirts" as proof that masculine women are celebrated, I see people responding that the only reason women can wear pants is because women and trans men fought for the right to do so. Which is absolutely true. However I don't think I've seen a lot of people take that argument to the obvious next step, which is that people fought so hard to normalize women wearing pants that it's simply not seen as an exclusively masculine thing in the modern era. When we talk about masculine women, we aren't talking about someone who buys a pair of skinny jeans with embroidery on the butt and wears them with a flowy blouse. We're talking about women who wear work jeans covered in dirt and layer their clothes to disguise their chests, or even wear binders. We're talking about women who have buzz cuts and thick body hair and sometimes even facial hair. We're talking about women who use pronouns other than she/her. We're talking about women who date other women. These women still face social stigma and discrimination, and are not celebrated by society at large just because crossdressing in public isn't a literal crime right now

folks if you are a woman with a large bust and off the rack blazers with slacks are simply Not It for you, what are you wearing to signify serious businesswoman girlboss in professional situations? I think a structured dress with or without sleeves and/or a cardigan is fine but my mother and grandmother (out of some kind of feminist concern?) keep telling me that this look is not “Serious Enough”

why do white americans act like words don't have meanings! I saw someone make a post about "black tie formal is different based on what region you live in" saying that it's common for "black tie" weddings to be more "casual" in her area and like?? okay so then it's not black tie? black tie literally MEANS something what you are describing is blatantly not that? but there are other words to describe that? yall will use your own language improperly and be mad when someone is just following the rules that your people made????
