So this has been on my mind ever since hearing “Lacy” on Olivia’s new album and I don’t know where else to vent so here goes, buckle up lol. I really, really, REALLY hate how everyone keeps using the whole “we can’t assume it’s about a woman because we don’t know Olivia is not straight” as an argument. I see so many people try to disguise what is honestly just plain old homophobia as “respecting a celebrity’s privacy.” Yes, no celebrity owes their fans anything, no, no one has to come out, but gaslighting queer fans who relate to the song or insinuating that queer people who believe Olivia could be queer are somehow wrong for doing this is wrong. When people completely invalidate queer interpretation it sends the message whether intended or not that assuming someone is queer is somehow offensive. There isn’t anything shameful about being queer and if Olivia IS queer that should be accepted and respected.

“ I really have a problem with the duplicitous approach that couples have, to move under the radar in queer or progressive sexuality spaces," says Zoë—adding that she feels it "erases genuine girl-on-girl desire" by having "women kind of orbiting male desire, only existing to serve that male desire and the male gaze." ok but racism and fatphobia in the queer community is crazy btw. Like sometime you gotta ask,
Are they butch/masc or are they a poc? Are they fem or are they white? Are they androgynous or are they skinny? Is their hair style choice non conforming or is it just not straight/fluffy? Honestly sometimes I see some strange things being said up in here, and irl too. I just. Idk mann

i have a few scenarios for you to consider
~~~
character: “i’m not straight”
fandom*: mmmm but what if you were
~~~
character: is bisexual in the comics
fandom: well, character isn’t explicitly stated to be bi in the movies, therefore character is straight
~~~
writer: yeah character is pan and has a dating history with all genders (and this wasn’t shown bcuz of xyz)
fandom: well, it doesn’t matter what the writer says, character is straight bcuz they’ve only dated the opposite gender on screen
~~~
character: is gay (either implied or explicitly stated to be homosexual and homoromantic)
fandom: well, maybe they’re homosexual but heteroromantic**, therefore i’m only going to ship this character with the opposite gender
~~~
character: is a lesbian
fandom: well, lesbians can still have sex with men therefore i’m going to write f/m smut with this lesbian and a man. not as a “figuring out/exploring my sexuality” fic but just bcuz i can
~~~
queer community: hey this character is canonically queer, could you please be respectful of that?
fandom: how about you go fuck yourselves. this is so embarrassing to be asking for respectful representation, literally shut the fuck up
~~~
character: is canonically gay
fandom: well you can’t prove he’s not attracted to women so he’s straight actually
~~~
disclaimers:
* i’m talking about a fandom as a whole in this post, not a couple individuals who may do this. this is talking about if a large chunk (think half or more) of a fandom is ignoring a canon queer identity
** no hate to someone who may identify this way. if someone is this identity, kudos to them, but people shouldn’t just use this as an excuse to ignore someone’s queer identity
this is how you sound when ignoring aspec*** identities. do you hear how ridiculous this is?
*** aspec (the way i use it at least) includes the asexual spectrum (ace-spec) and aromantic spectrum (aro-spec). also your friendly reminder that people can be aro and not ace and vise versa but you can’t ignore one or the other to suit your fancy
there will probably always be people doing this (re: ignoring canon queer identities) in fandoms, however, not in mainstream and popular ships and not to the extent that aspec identities are erased. bcuz if you have a problem with the above scenarios but not when the character is aspec, an already basically invisible identity, you need to re-examine your thinking and deal with your hypocrisy
do you know how hard it is to prove a LACK of something? even if someone straight up says, “i experience zero sexual or romantic attraction to anyone,” someone else will be like, “well how do you know you just haven’t found the right person yet?”
is the idea that someone doesn’t want a romantic or sexual relationship that difficult to understand?
if you want to see your identity represented in a character headcanon, great! but do so in a way that doesn’t negate another marginalized and underrepresented canon identity
there are SO! MANY! straight characters at your disposal. use one of them for your queer headcanons until we reach the point where your identity is canon. then youll probably be fighting for representation the same way i am right now
it also sucks to see fighting within the aspec community. bcuz yes aro and ace identities are a spectrum. however, when there’s a singular character with an aspec identity, you physically cannot showcase that spectrum. so if an ace character is sex-favorable, allos will believe all ace people are sex-favorable and ignore aces who are not. same thing for sex-repulsed aces and so on. the only solution is to fight for more aspec representation so everyone can see themselves in media without sacrificing parts of an aspec identity to fit how you identify
i’m tired. i’m so fucking tired of fighting for an ounce of representation. this should not be an uphill battle for people to accept aspec characters. i shouldn’t have to fight the queer community and straight people for this

People do understand that you can have more effective solidarity and understanding when you acknowledge difference… right?
Like. I’m a bisexual women. I love lesbians. I love hearing lesbians stories. I care deeply about understanding how bisexual and lesbian experiences compare and how our shared history connects us. But if you want to forge that connection, you have to know there are differences between our experiences. You have to respect the ability of lesbians to name and describe their own reality. What good is solidarity if you only use it to say “we’re the exact same in every way”? What good is understanding the relationship between bisexual and lesbian reality if you redefine lesbian to mean bisexual? How can we understand each other if we take away a core part of being a lesbian? Why do lesbians have to sacrifice half their reality so bisexual women can feel comfortable and included? Is shared attraction to other women not enough?

''yeah we should combat fandom misogyny/lesbophobia... by using biphobia towards bi women, this will solve everything''
literally. this is what some of you are saying... in 2024. fun fact, neither the video description I showed here nor the tags needed to mention bisexual women in particular, at all.
And don't give me that 'it's just a joke' crap - you got some biphobia towards bi women specifically and you need to listen to us when we call this out for what it is
(image description in each respective image caption) and below:
First Image Description: two genderless humanoid representations are facing one another, both with cartoon bubbles with text inside them. There's two frames represented, like a vertical comic. In the first frame, the figure on the left says: ''hey so there's a lack of f/f content in fandom and that's a problem we need to solve - media in general centers men, so we need to counter that. A lot of people in fandom have internalized misogyny, regardless of sexuality and gender; we need to examine and deconstruct it so we can have an equal share-'' text end. The figure on the left is interrupted mid sentence by the figure on the right saying: ''damn, bisexual women are to blame for this, they should do better and make f/f content since all they do is make m/m and m/f stuff right?''. The second frame has the two figures still, but without any bubbles nor text. The figure on the left simply has an expression of bewilderment and shock at what the figure on the right just said, as they both look at each other in silence.
Second Image Description: A cropped screenshot of a Youtube video description, with 104,059 views at the time of capture and noting the release date of the video with the text: ''Premiered Jan 14, 2024'' end text. The description text reads: ''What is 'the infantilized lesbian' and how is that connected to the birth of Christ? Why am I obsessed with lesbians hatef*cking in the mud and what does it take for a lesbian ship to take hold of the bisexual MM-loving girlies of Tumblr?'' end text.
Third Image Description: A cropped screenshot of Tumblr tags left by someone on a reblog of a post. The tags read, in order according to the screencapture: ''#dykes get to work #bisexual women….do better #I'M JOKING I'M JOKING #or am i……….'' end text.

Thank you for writing the (messy but neccessary) farcille breakdown. You handled it so wonderfully aaaaaaaah!! Like the other anon I was wondering how far "rock bottom" could get (because chapter 4 already felt pretty rock bottom) but. Yeah. That's pretty rock bottom, huh. The tragedy of loving someone but the other person not understanding <- this applies to both of them.
I think it was really neat how you flipped the question on who's reaching out to who with the academy flashback and the final scene with Namari, because... Marcille clinging onto Falin really is just a reversal of their academy days, isn't it? To everyone who met them after they reunited, it was always Marcille chasing after Falin, but to those who were at the magic academy, it was Falin chasing after Marcille. From picking flowers and berries to eat together, inviting Marcille out to see a play, and generally monopolizing her free time... I'm sure any of them would say the same thing as Namari, but in reverse. No wonder everyone thinks Marcille is just another friend to Falin. They weren't there to witness her pining /j. Idk!! I was rereading the chapter and the academy flashback girl was like "why do you hang off of Marcille so much" and I screamed to myself, "hey wait. HEY WAIT."
Tumblr media
#asks#a little creature#im SO glad you pointed out how falin was the first to pine and chase but was discouraged#its a very very important part#i think a really common wlw experience is to internalize that first rejection forever#whether it came from the object of your affections or an outside observer#the first time you encounter disgust for what felt like just happiness and affection#it stays with you. it can turn into a cage for the rest of your life but what you dont realize is that#at some point youre strong enough to open the door for yourself and you have to be able to do it#ironically ive only been the perpetrator of this platonically#pushing away my friends and hurting them bc i didnt think that i mattered enough to affect them#romantically ive been mostly on the other end just begging a girl to meet me in the middle at the very least#because even if they feel intensely as i do its not fun to chase and chase and get nothing bc someone else in their past was cruel#so it dhsjjd shows up in my writing a lot#self loathing as a queer experience is almost universal. but are you able to stand up and grow beyond it? because you need to.#staying locked in your own head and never looking outwards is just another kind of selfishness#i dont always try to do it but lmao my writing almost always touches on this at least a little bit in various degrees as like#maybe my best attempt at a compassionate way of portraying this self-erasure as a kind of selfishness that needs to be addressed
