So I've been watching Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, and so far I kinda like it.
There's some aspects that I'm getting used to like the focus on the new kid cast, but hey it's a reboot, so it kinda tracks. I also have a few questions as to why and how his kids aren't wizards and how he got fired. LIKE HOW? WHY would he be fired, he was no doubt the best candidate. I hope they elaborate.
I will say, Justin's character is still in tact and I love it. He's still the same as ever, and so was Alex.
(Also Max is a billionaire if heard correctly what?!)
Billie is...idk. I don't love or hate her. I don't really have that much to say. Other than I like how impulsive she is, yet how she has good heart and good intentions in her. I'm sure she'll grow on me later in the show.
The others are pretty fine too. Again the same boat as Billie. I know there's only 4 episodes out as of now, but for now, they're good.
I will say one thing though, my favorite character is Roman. Idk, I just like how he reacts to the magical shenanigans. Like, he's so done with it and that he's often pushed out of his comfort zone. So far I find him the funniest besides Justin and Billie.
The theme song is honestly pretty good. A part of me kinda wishes that Selena was the one to sing it but that's nostalgia talking. Billie's actress (forgot her name) sings it well and I like the intro sequence.
I kinda wish that the monsters were actors in costumes. (You know like the OG show). I think it would've been a cool idea to go that route and really amp up the designs with practical effects than the CGI, but that's just preference.
Other than that, I like the series so far. It's a decent follow-up to the WOWP and I'll keep watching it.

So I've been watching Wizards Beyond Waverly Place and I'm so confused as to why Roman and Milo aren't wizards. Like Jerry wasn't even a wizard anymore when he had kids and all three of them had magic. And clearly Justin still has his powers, but neither of his kids do? For some reason?
Also, unrelated, but where is Billie's family? Does she have one?

wow wizards beyond is very cool and silly! i sure do hope the fandom won't focus solely on justin and completely ignore the black protagonist that's very clearly disadvantaged & coping with the trauma of being kicked out of countless places

omg the parallels between wizards beyond waverly place with wizards of waverly place like billie taking away justin’s wisdom is literally when alex has justin duplicated and both justin and duplicate justin and merges them together with and he becomes so laid back and not himself like!!!! I missed my wizards so much

i have seen like three episodes of wizards beyond waverly place, most notably the first one.
and yeah, it's not very good. the first episode switches on a dime from a very well acted moments between alex and justin (that would not have been so good if selena and david didn't have years of experience acting as siblings) to just the most boring jokes followed by an undeserved laugh track.
justin's two sons just aren't interesting (also with how bad they're paralleling alex, justin, and max, except not siblings this time, i will yell (derogatory) if they ship billie and roman later on).
that being said! in episode one, there is this absolutely heartbreaking exchange between billie and justin where justin is trying to coach billie into banishing a monster and billie, panicking, says she can't do it and that her previous teachers were right not to believe in her. and you can just see justin's heart breaking for this kid as he tells her, no, she just had bad teachers. absolutely phenomenal acting by janice leann brown and david henrie, and you should at least watch episode one of the show for this one really good exchange, and also all the alex content.
taking the opportunity to link my favorite wizards of waverly place fanfic! As the Worm Turns by Dannyblue! Also taking the chance to link my own wowp fanfic, The Hat! It was inspired by As the Worm Turns, and both feature protective!Alex!
If you want or have other wowp fic recs (that don't contain incest!) hmu i have like four.

Despite my issues with the reboot I love Wizards Beyond Waverly Place so much. It’s got a lot of heart and Billie is young Alex to a tee and she’s just trying so hard and I feel for her so much.

Watching wizards beyond Waverley place, I still think it’s a stupid name but whatever I get it, and god they copy and pasted Justin with Roman huh? I’m only saying this because he is thus automatically engineered to be my favourite character and I love him

I love this.
disney is a coward so I know they'll never do this, but given what we learned was SUPPOSE to happen between alex and stevie, I would still love a post-eloping for the reboot.
like just imagine alex and stevie as the Cool Gay Aunts(tm) for justin's kids (+ billie). they show up for the holidays and totally shower the kids with magical gifts, including a baby dragon for the boys (which does end up setting fire to their parents bed sheets). milo shows off a magic trick to his friends, using alex (since billie's not allowed to) sneakily casting spells from the bushes so the card really does dissapear from his hand, leaving his friends cheering (stevie smiling but refusing to admit to alex how cute is it). stevie has a motorcycle (which alex thinks is super hot but also refuses to admit) and while the kids aren't old enough for a ride, she does let them sit on it and rev the handles nice and loud while justin panics from the porch. they team up with all three kids to pull pranks on justin and even sometimes get giana in on a few harmless ones. maybe alex even uses her role on the tribunal to get stevie's records cleared, and they both start to advocate for a more fair way of distributing magic between families.
and billie could have an extra adult at her side! I know justin is suppose to fill the pseudo-dad role, but while billie spends her time with the russo's, also gets to spend her summers or whatever with her two cool wizard aunts. they encourage her to keep up with her studies but for the most part they just chill, letting billie indulge in a few sweets (knowing how health-conscious justin has forced his family to be) and sometimes in a pg-13 movie together. when she's there however, the house does turn into a prank war; guests are to be extremely careful when entering and encouraged to bring a separate pair of clothes.
I dunno it would just be super cool; alex and stevie reunited and I think the kids would love her too - plus watching their aunt who's always acted so aloof get all smiley and whatnot and I'm just imagining a scenario with alex and the kids like:
billie: why does stevie call you babygirl
alex: hey who wants to play the quiet game!!
#wizards of waverly place#wowp#wizards beyond waverly place#disney channel#I would LOVE a reappearance of stevie though just imagine it#even though billie has been training something happens where the council finally decides to strip her of her powers like alex warned about#alex and justin try going to talk to the council on billie's behalf but have to leave her behind#and when billie's all alone you suddenly see stevie slink from the shadows with a 'hey kid..'#billie is nervous at first but stevie says she actually wants to help her and that it's not fair what's happening to her#and says if billie comes with her then she can keep her powers and in a moment of worry billie makes the split decision to go with her#I dunno how alex finds out maybe roman sees it happen too late and says some girl took billie#'what girl??' 'I dunno! she was a wizard too - she kept her wand in her boot!'#and IMMEDIATELY alex knows what happened#alex eventually finds stevie and there's this VERY tense moment when they see each other#stevie still mad at alex for 'betraying' her (even if stevie was kinda right but nvm) and who's she's aligned with now#'you workin' for the man now russo? gone soft?' 'at least I'm not straight-up stealing kids'#alex still feeling a bit guilty about what she did to stevie but mad at her for taking billie#there's an almost fight (verbal or magical whichever) but in some outside chaos they loose billie#now they're forced to team up to find her#and although it's cold at first they both warm up again to each other having missed their friendship (even if it was short lived)#stevie quietly admiring how much further alex has gotten with magic and how she's excelled#and alex still having a soft heart for stevie wanting to help the wizards who got abandoned#anyway they find billie but the council is alerted to what happened and is now on their way to them to capture stevie#a cornered alex pleads with stevie saying she can persuade the council to let her go and while stevie's heart skips at that#she knows it's no use and uses her magic to create a pocket dimension to escape or something#but not before kissing alex on the corner of her lips and saying 'till next time russo - give that stuck-up council some hell for me'#freezing alex who's seconds from pulling her back and then disappears#billie enters and unfreezes alex and watches her face slowly turns crestfallen as she realizes#'do you think we'll ever see her again?' 'your guess is as good as mine kid..' '..do you want to?' '....lets head back home.'#WHAT I WOULDN'T GIVE

what sends me i think is the show trying to force parallels between alex & billie by having every single character go she's REBELLIOUS and DANGEROUS and HATES AUTHORITY and then it cuts to the dangerous anti-authority rebel in question doing nice things to make her new dad happy as a thank you for taking her in

so. totally unrelated fandom post.
i've only seen the first episode of the wizards of waverly place sequel (wizards beyond waverly place) but i have thoughts. the basic premise of the show is that justin russo has settled down with a non-wizarding wife (giada), has two kids, and has become an ordinary middle school teacher after being fired from wiztech. his life is upturned when his sister, alex, drops round with a delinquent young girl named billy who needs help learning magic—and, oh yeah, she's supposedly part of some big prophecy to save the world.
so far, all i've seen is criticism of the characters and the show in general, but i think a lot of it is unfair. i'll concede that replicating the character dynamics from the original show (with giada as theresa, justin as jerry, billy as alex, roman as justin, milo as max, etc) was a bad move, but justin's character in particular has received a lot of flack that i, personally, find unreasonable.
people say that justin wouldn't dare give up being a wizard; that the trajectory of his life makes no sense given his love of magic. but life doesn't always work out the way we imagine, even with meticulous planning and preparedness. we can't forget that justin's own father was very much the same; that jerry was a very skilled wizard who loved magic and could never imagine giving it up. given that, i think it makes sense for justin's character to settle down with a non-magical wife and become a school principal. he held on to magic the longest of the three siblings because he defined himself by his skill with it, but he learned, as he aged, that magic wasn't everything.
besides, seeing justin lose his magical lifestyle as his ages only to reclaim it again at the start of this series is a great, if obvious, analogy for what happens to most of us as we age. even those who hold on tightest to their younger years can find themselves losing the the magic felt in childhood; we have to reach out and take it back for ourselves. children are sometimes the best ones at showing us what we have lost, hence: justin teaches magical children and in doing so rediscovers his own magic.
(side note: being a middle school principal suits him for obvious reasons: his love of learning, love of rules, love of wonder. the whole "being fired from wiztech because of an incident with a unicorn" also makes sense to me because, as much as alex learned from him, he learned from alex, too.)
i have nothing to say about alex's character because selena gomez came back and fucking crushed it. the biggest problem is the delivery of the prophecy: she just drops it like "hey billy's the only one who can save the world" and then leaves. now, do i think this is bad writing? yes. but i also think it would make sense if this was utter bullshit; if alex only said this to justin to ensure he really, truly enveloped himself back into the magical world because she knows just how much he misses it. (it's just a prank, bro!)
what would i have changed? i'd probably have made it so that alex had a kid like justin, and justin had a kid like alex. i would not give justin two boys as i don't think that does anything for his character. i would include both jerry and harper, as their actors have a goddamn podcast about the show and deserve to be included. (not to mention how jerry's character, in mirroring justin's, could be very informative for the whole plot.) also, justin's wife? she's fine, but please at least address what happened to juliet. was it the whole "i'm a vampire and i don't grow old but you do" thing? because that only adds to the reasoning behind justin giving up his magical lifestyle.
(also, and this is a tiny thing, but people are wondering how justin the principal and his investigative reporter wife can afford their house? and, HELLO, we get told that max is now a billionaire—thanks to his sandwich enterprise, i think. he would've totally bought them a house after giada convinced justin to accept it.)
