Sports writing gets very formulaic. Which football teams had matches, who won, who faked injuries and who actually got stretchered out of the arena. Highlights of the Superbowl or the Fencing World Final, and a short note on any local wrestling shows he'd be attending or boxers worth watching because Zmei's partial.

But in some of gaps between major seasons, Zmei has a few more liberties where he can truly focus on whatever he likes. He's still got a purple belt in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu on a mostly calcified knee, so what's his editor going to do? Fight him over wanting to go back to his roots and report on the incredible strength and technique needed for proper ballet? Zmei thinks not. The coward.

So he gets a ticket comped and a press pass to backstage. A handful of the corps girls are nervous at first but warm up to his brusque but genuine curiosity, and the cavalier is relieved to be interviewed in Russian without the clunkiness of a translator as they go back and forth about grip strength and workouts that isolate the thigh muscles most involved in leaping.

He's already tired and his muscles and joints only seem stiffer after talking to dancers all day, but he forces himself back to his feet and tries not to lean so much on his cane as he goes back over his notes for the last interview of the day. 'Make it seem effortless' is deadly, and already digging its way into his psyche.

Zmei stops at a delicate knock on door of where he's settled, and turns slowly, taking in her posture and the set of her feet even in street shoes with a small smile. He moves, holding out a hand to shake and a little too conscious of how he hobbles to meet her.

I really like this russian edition of classic books. Letting famous artists do the covers in YA style was such a simple but clever decision. According to the recent study the number of teenage readers increased, possibly thanks to these covers. I own traditional classics with blank covers but if I ever see one of these in the wild, it’ll probably make me go feral.
