I’m doing ok! A little rough on the edges, but ok🫡 I’ve been in a pretty bad autistic burnout for the past 2-3 years (yeah, official ‘tism diagnosis acquired🏆), so my limited capacity has been exhausted by working, settling into my new home, therapy, and just generally trying to figure shit out🥴 But art is still a huge part of my life, though now I’m dabbling in a multitude of other hobbies (abstract drawing/painting, crocheting, beading, clay, writing, etc.). Nonetheless, I still think about the fandom and the characters frequently, just don’t have enough time and energy to actually create or finish projects I had already started🤧 I wonder how many of you have also moved on during the recent years, probably a lot… Feel free to drop a hello if you’re still here, it’s always lovely to hear from you❤️🌌

to the surprise of absolutely no one, they get first place (despite me not going in a particular order) because of reasons. They're perfect. Soulmates. Slowburn of all time. Yin and Yang. Eyes the color of each other's souls. Truest OTP to ever OTP in my book. ∞/10

Konosetsu (Negima!)

I already talked about them in their own post, this scene changed my life leading to my self-discovery and it still lives rent-free in my mind.

Kyosaya (Madoka Magica)

I'd also add MadoHomu but I'm trying to keep it to just one for each fandom. That said, they still make me mentally unwell. I love them, and I did for a long time now. I can't wait for the next movie to come out and suffer.

Still down the queer cartoons making history path, these two made me insane back in the day because I still didn't understand I was queer and lots of sapphic couple were starting to appear in media, and I remember jokingly say how "lesbian ships were hauting me". All I can say now is "Thank you" lol. Anyway, they were incredibly important and all the people criticizing how little queerness there's in the show will never understand just how massive this scene was.

Catradora (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power)

Friends to Enemies to back to Friends to Lovers. Iconic. I still want a movie with their adventures bringing magic back to the universe.

Hollstein (Carmilla)

My third beloved blonde with a cat gf ship. I miss this web-series every day. Also, Natasha Negovanlis played an immense role in my gay awakening.

Ellie and Riley (The Last of Us: Left Behind)

Ellie and Dina are adorable and I love them, BUT I just will never get over these two. That dlc fucked me up. (also, they're in the same category with Korrasami as "gay ships that hauted me before I realized I was queer" lol)

Lumity (The Owl House)

I remember starting this show feeling it as the successor of Steven Universe, at least to me. We could say that at level of mistreatment from its parent company, it defenitely surpassed it, but at least I'm glad I was right and we got Luz and Amity becoming canon. I love these two and not a day passes without me yelling at Disney for what it did to them.

Bubbline (Adventure Time)

I actually watched Adventure Time fully only recently, but I always loved them even when I watched the show randomly when it appeared in tv back in the day. Getting to see the progression properly just made me love them even more.

Yasammy (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous/Chaos Theory)

Incredibly recent addition, but I am so glad that I checked out Camp Cretaceous and got into it. It's a nice show and these two are a really cute couple, their confession and especially Yaz's internal turmoil were just so on point. I was really happy to see them go still strong in Chaos Theory, and I can't wait for next season.

Pricefield (Life is Strange)

These two caused me pain in the best possible way. I felt literal heartbreak at the Bay Ending, and I was just as emotional at the Bae one (Bae > Bay Forever) I hope the new game will respect their relationship OR ELSE.

Wow, this is quite the list. I do have an amazing taste, if I do say so myself, ahah!

"Canon MLM pairing would outshine Bumblebee."

That's a weird reason not to have more LGBTQA+ representation. What's next, there shouldn't be a FtM trans character, because it would outshine May - a MtF trans character?

There shouldn't be a bisexual male character, because it would outshine Blake - a bisexual female character?

There shouldn't be a nonbinary human character, because it would outshine CC and Little/Somewhat - nonbinary animal characters?

There shouldn't be gay male characters, because it would outshine Ilia and Coco - canon lesbian characters? Besides theres already good enough gay characters, like Scarlet (remember him? He existed in V3 for 10 seconds) and Pilot Boi (he's dead and there's no mention of him being gay in the story).

Outside of Fairgame, I can't say there is any other popular MLM ship in the RWBY fandom and even if Fairgame is popular, Bumbleblee is still the more popular ship. WLW ships that aren't Bumblebee or Whiterose already don't get much spotlight and now there shouldn't be any canon MLM ship, because Bumbleblee might not be Miss Popular anymore?

LGBTQA+ representation shouldn't be a competition. We're a community, meant to support one another and that includes caring about other identities getting representation outside of our own.

You mean, MLM stories where the watchers didn't get queerbaited? Where the MLM couples got happy endings? Where MLM romance got writen with respect? Where MLM shippers didn't get accused for not letting "guys just be friends", forcing romance, fetishising gay people etc. ???

MLM stories where the romance are treated normal and writers putting work into the romance the same they would have done for straight F/M couple??

And just because there are shows with MLM romance in USA, doesn't mean any other place have MLM shows too.

But why did Bumbleblee have to become canon in the first place? There is already enough WLW ships in animation.

Rupphire from SU, Korrasami from TLOK, Catradora from SPOP, Lumity from TOH, Harlivy from DC, Bubbline from Adventure Time, Caitvi from Arcane, Harumichi from Sailor Moon etc.

If RWBY fans want to see WLW representation, why don't they just watch other shows?🙄 No need to force in WLW romance in this story, because what if the WLW ship takes away the spotlight from the F/M ships?🥺

I won't deny there isn't a problem of how MLM relationships gets treated vs how WLW relationships get treated by media and fandoms, but it shouldn't mean MLM have to stop existing. It doesn't mean wanting to see MLM couples on screen is bad and that you don't care about WLW couples. MLM romance still has to deal with homophobia. Just like WLW romance does.

But God forbit a person wants there to be a slight bit of MLM representation in a 10 years old show where most romance is F/M and the on-screen gay romance is mainly WLW (Ilia's crush on Blake, Saphron and Terra, Bumblebee)

Ugggfh Nickelodeon robbed us so bad. At the time LOK was airing I thought korrasami was rushed, but after multiple rewatches it’s pretty clearly there, but if you’re looking for it through a heteronormative lense you’ll miss it. That was the whole point. That was the only way Nick would even let them do it. But if you’ve spent time in fandom shipping non-het ships and latching onto any tiny nugget of potential feelings between two characters you KNOW won’t end up together and watch LOK through that same lense, what we got is all the same stuff people would use to justify a ship in any other series. It’s subtle and not as in your face as K/ataang or M/aiko but it’s there, and I appreciate it a lot more now than I did then. It actually ends up feeling deeper and more emotionally developed than some of those ships to me.

That said, after reading the LOK comics where Korra and Asami are much more open and affectionate and clearly in a relationship, I feel robbed, because this is what we COULD have had, but Nick didn’t want to take heat from homophobic suburban moms about a kiss or an “I love you” between two women on screen and shut it down.

It’s so easy to say “that’s the most they could do at the time” and “korrasami walked so catradora and lumity could run” and while that’s absolutely TRUE I still hate that it wasn’t clear enough so people still be out on Reddit or in the comments of Asami’s page on the wiki saying they hate korrasami and don’t consider it canon because “it didn’t have development” or “they could be holding hands as friends”. Like it was TOO subtle so homophobes are out here using the lack of clarity as a screen for their homophobia trying to say their dislike stems from a problem with the writing and not from the fact that it’s two women.

5. Avatar Korra and Asami Sato/Korrasami (Avatar: The Legend of Korra)

While Korra and Asami were robbed in the series because of censoring, the comics pick up right where the show ended: showing our girls completely dominating Republic City in all of their Power Couple Glory.

Probably the oldest show or book on this list, Korra and Asami paved the way for lgbtq+ representation in mainstream media today.

4. Rangi and Kyoshi/Rangshi (The Kyoshi Novels)

Yet another Avatar and their forever girl! Kyoshi is my favourite Avatar and Rangi is in the same league: both of them are them are in a separate class of their own making.

I love them.

3. Luz Noceda and Amity Blight/Lumity (The Owl House)

Owl House is the sweetest thing I've seen all year. Luz and Amity are no exception.

Dancing in the moonlight while destroying a monster that shapeshifts into your worst fears? Getting hyper-competitive so that you can impress your crush?

Luz and Amity deserve everything.

Summer Commissions!

Hello everyone!

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been super active on tumblr and in the Wicked community, because I’ve been very busy this summer! From apartment hunting, to moving out of my parents’ house, to working almost full time at a new job, I’ve been quite busy learning how to do all the things that one would consider ‘adulting’.

It’s taking some time for me to get used to the financial routine of paying rent, paying for gas, and having to cook for myself. Money is a bit tight right now, especially with college starting up soon, and until I can get used to the financial demands of being a young adult, I could use a way to make some extra money. 

All this ‘adulting’ can be a bit stressful, so I figured what better way to relax and to make some money than to get back into writing!

So, I’ve decided to open up commissions again!

I’ll be charging a 20 dollar (USD) base price for a short (1-2k) one-shot, anything longer than that can be negotiated. (It takes me about an hour to plan a fic of that length, and another hour to write it, so 10 bucks an hour is my general rate, though I can be flexible on this)

Also, in order to not overwhelm myself, I will only be accepting two commissions at a time! So if you’ve been missing gelphie writing in your life, you’d better act fast on this post!

This isn’t shipping related but all my Owl House peeps are in this section of tumblr so I'm posting this here anyway, I don't think I've ever really mentioned how much I love Braxas, he's such a little cutie pie and I just want to hug him, I love that "Yay!" is his catchphrase and he's so polite, like he has this deep menacing voice but he's just the sweetest little bean

i’m having Thoughts about wlw in children’s cartoons in the past 10 years or so and how far things have come!!!!! it’s so nice to me!!!

thinking about a few months ago when the version of velma from mystery incorporated was revealed to be intended as a lesbian with her girlfriend marcie……and that was the best they could do in 2010-2013 and i respect that, you know? for that time that was the equivalent of screaming “they’re lesbians” from the rooftops

like that’s a world pre-bubbline, which singlehandedly made so much possible—the episode of adventure time that began the bubbline ship in an instant, what was missing, aired in september 2011. that was the BEGINNING. bubbline couldn’t become officially canon until the finale in 2018, and it took so much to get there

and don’t even get me started on how korrasami was a GAME-CHANGER. it was 2014 when the lok finale aired!!!! only 3 years after the start of bubbline. people seem to forget now that that was the biggest thing that had ever happened. they were the first wlw couple in a children’s show (that i'm aware of, anyway) that was allowed to be explicitly together romantically in the most obvious way the creators were able to show it. in 2014, that was unreal. and another thing that makes me really emotional is that korrasami could happen because of the existence of bubbline, and korrasami later helped bubbline make it to the end goal

and then! both bubbline and korrasami led to the possibility of steven universe (2013-2020) ramping the levels of gay up to, like, a thousand. i don’t think cishet people exist on that show. steven universe helped to normalize lgbt themes for cartoon network.

and again—adventure time was on a while. bubbline was a really slow burn with a long time between their episodes. the world changed a lot in that time. by the time 2018’s finale rolled around, the network allowed them to finally let bubblegum and marceline kiss on screen because of steven universe and korrasami, partially, plus the fact that ruby and sapphire had also kissed a few months earlier (july 2018, versus september 2018). correct me if i’m wrong but i think i remember that being the first animated/cartoon wlw kiss, or maybe specifically in a kids’ show?

and now we have she-ra (2018-2020) and how catradora is the Main Thing of the show. the main character is a lesbian and her happy ending is she gets to be with the girl she loves. the main lesbian couple is so intrinsic to the plot of the show, the heart of the show, that they could not be removed and it’s how the creator, a lesbian herself, was able to convince the network to do it. and that’s not even mentioning the married lesbian couple, or another lesbian who canonically had a crush on one of the other girls and then ended up with a different girl, there’s lots more lgbt characters in she-ra okay no one is cishet but i’m focusing on wlw here,

and now the one currently sweeping the internet and for good reason is lumity from the owl house (which just began in this year of 2020) where it’s season one and amity is very, very clearly shown to have a crush on luz and it’s honestly more obvious than some straight couples i’ve seen on tv. it’s allowed to be normal and natural and it’s so delightful

and all of these were possible because they were fought for tooth and nail, and they were all possible because of what came before it! and they’re all WONDERFUL!!! it is so, so incredible that we have each and every one of these in the world, and that they mean so much to people

and god i know we have SO much farther to go in lgbt rep but all of this was all in 10 years!!! less, really!!!! but today’s kids get to see all of these and have what we didn’t get to and isn’t that AMAZING!!!! i’m EMOTIONAL ABOUT GAY PEOPLE IN CHILDRENS CARTOONS

SHE-RA SEASON 5 REVIEW

Okay. 

Here we go. 

KJEFKFPOJFEKD THAT WAS AWESOME, FANTASTIC, EXCEPTIONAL, I JUST LOVED IT FROM BEGINNING TO END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

NOW, to the reviewing!!! Because I have SO MUCH to say. But first, of course, and spirits I’m happy, Catradora!! Like, wow, I was crying at the end of the last episode because it was so good and pure and it felt right. At first, I didn’t really imagine how Catra could have a redemption arc, plus Adora kinda forgiving her, and then having them both falling in love and admitting this love before the end of the show. That seemed like a lot to manage in only 13 episodes of 20 min. But guess what? THEY FREAKING DID IT, and it felt fluid and right and it made perfect sense. The kiss was perfect, but every little moment before was perfect too. I especially loved the communication scene between the two ships, when Catra is sending Glimmer to Adora & Bow. Like, how Adora couldn’t believed her ears? And Catra saying “I’m sorry”, her-whom-shall-not-ever-say-sorry, saying sorry? IT WAS GREAT. And the rescue and Catra has short hair (I had to get used to it, but it’s actually a great look for her) and Bow always saying she’s cute and all. I’m glad there was some conflict at first too, it’s hard to stop butting heads when you’re used to it. But then the TEASING (you know which scene I’m talking about) and the FLIRTING and TOUCHING. Like, wow. It was so clearly romantic, and I never EVER see that in cartoons. 

Korrasami walked so Catradora could run, and what a run, my friends! 

But not everything is about Catradora, and it’s a greater indication of the quality of the show. I still can’t believe how they manage to do everything and get it so right in so little time, it blows my MIND!! Adora’s journey with She-Ra and her friends and Catra, it was so blatantly obvious she didn’t let herself feel too much, especially if it “distracted” her from her goals as She-Ra. She wanted to save everyone, to save her friends because she loves them, but she didn’t understand that she would hurt them by dying in some sort of heroical sacrifice. And Catra learning to accept love and affection from others, and connecting with the little invisible cat (that was pretty dope, I loved it) and opening up. That was beautiful to see her try, try her hardest, and sometimes it would work and sometimes she would lash out, but she tried. Basically, Catra helped Adora to become a little more selfish and in-tune with what she wants, and not what the world or She-Ra need. And in return, Adora helped Catra become a little bit more selfless, to think about others. They complete each other so perfectly, and the flash-forward in the future was awesome aaaaaaaaaaaaand I’m getting back to Catradora, sorry!

Now to other characters. 

Glimmer was fantastic. Gosh, her relationship with Catra was so touching, and her apologizing to Bow, and just, you know, being her better self. By the way, why aren’t you all talking about BOW AND GLIMMER????? HOW COULD I NOT SEE THIS BEFORE??? They are so cute, and the “I love you”s before the final battle, and the forehead KISS omg. Best friends falling in love, this is perfect. Bow being the only one with some sense of self-preservation (at least until Catra arrives!) was pretty funny too, he is probably the most clever in their group. And the both of them searching for Bow’s dads, it shows that - again - you can be selfish sometimes, and it’s okay. Actually, Glimmer also shows that it’s okay to be a little selfish to Bow, and Bow shows her that it’s also could to rely on friends and not carry everything on her shoulders (like she did in season 4). Also, how cute Frosta & Glimmer are, everytime they see each other! And Bow & Entrapta are so funny too, I just love how we had so many different interactions between every character this season.

The plot with the chips was phenomenal too. I was worried it would be too impersonal, to have the Princesses fighting againt robots and clones. But now, having Princesses fighting Princesses was freaking angsty and great!! Spirits, Netossa trying to save Spinirella was so heart-breaking, and I’m so happy we finally had a story with the two of them at the centre of the narrative. The underwater episode was pretty great too, I love when they play dress-up!! Also, what was this CHEMISTRY between Perfuma & Scorpia???? They would be great together, and it’s refreshing to see Scorpia being treated kindly by someone. And Sea-Hawk and Mermista are soooooooooooo funny. When she said she had set a boat on fire to see what it felt like??? Lmao, I was on the floor!!! And the Princesses kinda being mad at Entrapta for caring only about technology, and then having Entrapta working, not for technology but now to save her friends was some real character development. 

I’m confused about Shadow-Weaver, tho. I knew I didn’t want her to have a full redemption arc this season. It would be letting her off too easy: like, she was a freaking abuser for years, and thirsty for power and she worked for the Horde and was Hordak’s left hand for years too! And wow, I was so angry when she tried to do her bullshit again and separate Adora & Catra. The worst thing was, she actually thought she was going the right thing! I’m so happy we got to see both Adora & Catra screaming at her, and calling her out for her bullshit, and refusing to be manipulated anymore. Shadow-Weaver did a few good things from time to time (like saving Micah at one moment), but I dunno, I wasn’t expecting her to die. I had tears in my eyes when she took off her mask and exploded. I guess that was the point: Adora and Catra were also crying, she was their mother figure for a long time after all. It’s like, you can have an abuser and know about it, but still love them in a way... and that’s becoming too personal, back to the review!! 

I dunno what to say, honestly, everything was great. Sure, I would have loved to see a little bit more Rogelio, and Kyle and Lonnie (btw, KYLE HAS A CRUSH ON ROGELIO!!!!!!!). And maybe a little bit more scenes between Catra & Scorpia too, she didn’t really have the time to apologize before the crushing hug (”there it is”, lol) but I’m sure they’ll be okay. The little scene between Perfuma & Catra about Scorpia was so lovely too, I hope they’ll be friends at some point. Little things here and there, mainly because there was a lot to tell and not many episodes to tell them. But what they did tell, they told it the best way possible.

She-Ra is one of the best series I have ever watched, and I’m so glad and relieved that we live in a world where this show, and even more this season, were possible. I wasn’t expecting everything to be... so explicit, I guess, especially in a serie for children, and yet Noelle Stevenson didn’t hold back at all. It’s like the curtain was, not only opened, but completely removed. I was so excited watching every episode, I couldn’t stop and then it was over and I couldn’t decide if I was crying or laughing (maybe both) but it made me feel SO MUCH, and it gave me hope and spirits know we need some positivity right now. 

So yeah. Thank you to the entire She-Ra team for creating and sharing this little treasure with us. I’m sorry for rambling, I’m just, this so GREAT, it’s making me so excited for future shows like this one!! If Korrasami walked, if Catradora ran, what will we have next, you know???!!

I just finished rewatching The Legend of Korra and it feels... weird? To see it all unfold again, five and a half years after the finale first aired. I’ve rewatched it a couple of times but both ATLA and LoK can be so different with each and every viewing. Well, not different, just give a new perspective. This time around I thought a lot about what Korrasami could have been if only it was made more recently.

Hear me out. I love Korrasami as it is. I have no idea exactly how strict Nick’s censorship was and even back in 2014 I wished we could have had more, something more explicitly queer, but I was and am so happy about it still. Watching Books 3 and 4 air for the first time, slowly realizing that they are actually going somewhere with Korra and Asami’s relationship, man, that was a good time. Such an experience to watch the relationship develop. I also adore both characters to death and it was once again so good to see my babies grow. I am also now the age of Asami in Book 4 (22) and and when these episodes first aired I was Korra’s age in Book 1 (17), so yeah, wild time.

But with She-Ra recently ending and that beautiful and breathtaking Catradora ending, I can’t help but wonder. I know people joke about “Korrasami walked so Catradora could run” but that really is true. 2014 wasn’t that long ago but it feels like a different world in terms of queer rep in children’s animation. In 2014, we only had “What Was Missing” and “Sky WItch” for Bubbline content. I have very strong feelings about Bubbline being crucial in paving way to animated queer rep, it only became canon almost four years after Korrasami happened.

I wonder because part of me wishes LoK came after Adventure Time and Steven Universe and She-Ra, so that Korra and Asami could have had their on-screen kiss, so that we could have had more. I’m so happy about Catradora and the future of animation and I was so happy in 2014, but now I realize that we deserved more and dammit, we still do.If Korrasami happened in 2020, it would be a different ending. As iconic and beautiful as it was to watch Korra and Asami walk into the spirit portal holding hands, it feels... Well, I don’t want to say it doesn’t feel like it’s enough now. I don’t want to minimalize the impact that that had back then. And yet, I wish Korrasami could have ran.

At the same time, what if The Legend of Korra wasn’t made in 2014? As much as I don’t want to dismiss the finale’s importance, I also don’t want to give it all the credit. Adventure Time started building up Bubbline and received backlash for it in 2012. Shows like Steven Universe set out to be unapologetically queer from the very beginning. It’s probably arrogant to say that without Korrasami we never could have had Catradora or other rep, but it was a milestone and I wonder how things would have been different without it. Maybe another show could have taken its place, who knows. It’s probably for the best that we had LoK in 2014.

Another aspect I considered is the way Korrasami had to work around censorship. I’m over trying to explain to people why their development felt organic and authentic so I’m not gonna justify it, it just did. And honestly, it might not have been was it not for the constraints of the studio. Like, I love the Avatar franchise with all I am but romance is the creators’ strong-suit, yet Korrasami developed so realistically because they couldn’t turn around and say “and now they’re in love” the moment they wanted to. That’s something you can do with straight couples, you don’t have to justify their existence. So this might have been a blessing in disguise, if you think about it, at least we got an actual relationship explored between the two before the possibility of a romance was even mentioned. That strong bond is worth more than an on-screen kiss, perhaps. Also, we have the comics.

I suppose, at the end of the day, I still appreciate Korrasami the way it was, but I’m also so happy that She-Ra and Catradora got to, just, exist. Without people calling it ambiguous, without justifications, without an explanation needed as to why it wasn’t more. It’s 2020 and we’re finally at a point where creators can tell the stories they want to tell, unencumbered by censorship. She-Ra’s triumph was not guaranteed, either, which shows that there’s still work to be done, but it’s an example of another milestone. My heart aches a bit because Korrasami’s narrative is forever tied to studio meddling and production issues (thanks, Nickelodeon), but the future is bright.

This train of thought was brought on by a particular project idea I have where I explore Bubbline, Korrasami, and Catradora, all of the individual characters and their relationships as they relate to trauma and transgression. There’s so much to be said about them, and part of it is how they show the progression of queer rep, hence this post. But the actual essay will probably focus more on the in-universe stuff. So yeah, that’s happening at some point, let me know if you’re interested and if you have any thoughts on any of this.

So I had this idea for a story which  I’m probably never gonna write

Involves Korrasami and Catradora

In this AU or if you can even call it that Adora and Korra win a ticket to stay at a lavish hotel for idk two weeks maybe.

Adora is reluctant to go at first but Catra convinces her with the help of Glimmah and Bow because they need a break from being Shera and all those other duties.

Korra on the other hand is ecstatic, she’s been dying to go on another vacation with Asami. Asami agrees and they start packing.

Basically this hotel is like a fandom hotel with various ships from different fandoms like idk Klance, Hiccstrid, Ladynoir, Bubbline, Rayllum, Lumity you get my point 

Anyways they get there and go to their rooms to settle in and then they hear an announcement ‘’Will the owners of Naga and Melog please report to the pets section. I repeat will the owners of Naga and Melog please report to the pets section’’

Catra’s like ah shit and Korra is panicking because she thinks they’ll get kicked out. Asami just tells her to go check it out and then to meet back at the lounge

She gets there and finds Naga chasing around something cause you know Melog can turn invisible and shit

There’s an attendant or whatever hotels have, and he’s like ‘’Is this your polar bear dog miss’’

Catra walks in and Melog runs to her and tackles her and then Naga is like running full speed at her cause she can finally see Melog and Korra tries to stop her but it ends in disaster and they end up colliding they laugh it off and Catra asks if their pets can just stay in their rooms for duration of the stay.

The attendant is like sure whatever cause he’s just done with life.

They end up talking and Catra is like ‘’I like you we should hang out, where you headed?’’ ‘’I’m going to the lounge my girlfriend is waiting for me there’’ Catra smiles ‘’Me too, see you in five’’ they go their separate ways.

They go to the lounge and they see Adora and Asami talking and they end up hitting it off.

They hang out together for almost the entire trip just doing stupid stuff like Adora and Korra arm wrestling, having a race between Naga and Melog to see who’s fastest, Asami and Catra watching their buff girlfriends working out, talking about their lives and showing off cause why not.

The vacation is sadly over but it’s not the last time they see each other, they end up visiting each others homes and also I would like to see Bolin’s  reaction to Catra sneezing.

So just like that, they end being the best of friends for a long time

Korrasami + Love Languages

Ok, so ever since doing a post about Catradora + Love Languages, I have felt compelled to do one with other OTPs. And since I just finished rewatching Korra, well, here we are! For those unfamiliar with this concept, here is a link to a brief description. (Disclaimer: it has a very heteronormative origin but I really love it as a concept and have personally found it useful in my relationships.)

Honestly, Korra and Asami were much harder to pin down! There’s a lot of evidence for different love languages for them both, but I think I narrowed it enough. It's fun to think about and their compatibility is much higher for sharing love languages, in my opinion.

Korra = Gives: Acts of Service + Quality Time, Receives: Words of Affirmation

Like I said, both Korra and Asami gave me some difficulty pinning things down. For Korra, the difficulty comes with her being the Avatar. Since being the Avatar is so ingrained in her identity - especially early on, before she is forced to examine it more through her PTSD and trauma - it is at times difficult to distinguish between her feelings of duty as the Avatar and her love language to those closest to her.

The reason I finally landed on this is two-fold: Korra is very action-oriented. Her first instinct if someone she loves is in trouble or needs something is to act. See Season 1, when Bolin goes missing, she spends a lot of time helping Mako find him and break him out of the Equalist rally. This shows both her love for Bolin by rescuing him, but also of course her growing crush on Mako. When Asami sacrifices... basically her whole life/world by taking down her father, she also tells Mako that Asami needs him, even though she has feelings for him herself. (From my experience, I think it's a common thing for people with Acts of Service as their love language to sacrifice their own needs for others.)

But Korra also values Quality Time with her significant others and I think this says a lot as the Avatar, whose time is constantly in demand from the world. She goes to the Winter Festival with Mako. She invites Asami on a Spirit Vacation, "just the two of us." She gets upset when Mako doesn't put her before his job. She goes to Asami's office to visit in the comics. Honestly, they are almost always seen together! She even gets a little put out when Asami wants to stay behind and work on designing new homes rather than going with Korra to great the refugees. Fortunately, they are able to smooth these things over with Korra’s receptive love language, Words of Affirmation. Acts of Service and Quality Time, at least for Korra, tend to overlap a lot, as we will see with Asami...

 Asami = Gives: Acts of Service (Quality Time?) + Words of Affirmation, Recieves: Quality Time

Let me start by saying that, I think Asami is probably fluent in all 5 of the love languages, as I could find examples for literally all of them! But I think Acts of Service/Quality Time + Words of Affirmation win out by a lot. Acts and Service and Quality Time are harder to tease apart, as most of them go hand-in-hand for Asami. She invites Mako on a date (where she provides him with something to wear!) and arranges for him to meet and get funding from her dad for the Fire Ferrets. She offers to go with Korra to the South Pole. She does Korra's hair for Jinora's ceremony. After a mild argument, she offers to take Korra out on a "turtle duck date night." She shows up in Season 3 with an airship when Korra gets kicked out of Republic City. She offers to watch over Korra's body when she enters the Spirit World. She also basically rebuilds Republic City while she is pining for Korra (from afar!) for 3 damn years. Must I go on? Her Acts of Service are colored by the fact that she wants to be present with her partners and attend to their needs in very specific ways. She also just... low key wants to spoil them? 

But! Asami is also very fluent in Words of Affirmation - and this is especially great when it comes to her relationship with Korra, and when we compare her fit to Mako's.

Compatibility: High AF

In Season 2, we see Korra and Mako struggle to communicate. I don't think this is any fault of either one of them, but a sign of mismatched needs and expectations. Korra, as a likely ESFP, is an external processor who needs a lot of validation and a partner who can hear her out and build her up. Asami does this well - probably because she understands some of the pressures herself, as CEO of a company, but also because she doesn't have any trouble expressing herself verbally. While Asami may be quiet and low-key, she is observant and very vocal about how great Korra is all the time! Even in Season 1 - "That's ridiculous, you're amazing!" And let's not forget Rememberances, which was a whole 10 minutes of Korra unloading and Asami building her up. I also see this action at work in the comics, when Korra gets a bit defensive at Asami brushing off her protection intially (ahem, an act of love from one of Korra’s love languages!!) - Asami doesn't rise to Korra's sudden hurt and defensiveness, she merely re-frames it for Korra and reassures her that she loves her - by offering Quality Time together, which Korra also values.

Asami herself doesn't want for much - as a probable INFJ, she is very independent and self-sufficient. But I think the love language that resonates the most with her is Quality Time. She attends all of Mako's games in Season 1 and takes him and Korra out on dates frequently during her respective relationships with them.

She states that the 3 years Korra was away were the "hardest in [her] life." When her and Korra grow closer in Season 3, she drops all her responsibilities (ok, she probably left someone very capable in charge) to go fly around the Earth Kingdom with her and practically never leaves her side. The Spirit Vacation clearly means a lot to her, when Korra offers it ("Really?").

Korra is very clearly willing to give Asami as much of her time as she has to give and Asami reciprocates by being Korra's #1 confidante and cheerleader. Not to mention, either one of them would do almost anything for the other. They meet each other's needs quite wonderfully, which is why their relationship is so harmonious, even in the most stressful of situations.
