I wanted to post this on Halloween day, to conclude my "vampires and witches" theme going on this month... Unfortunately I got very busy. At least I still have a spooky date: in some regions of France, like Bretagne, the "haunted night" was not from October 31st to November 1st, but rather from November 1st to November 2nd. The night of All Saints Day, the eve of the Day of the Dead, a time during which the ghosts and wraiths could walk among the living and return to the house of their next of kin...
I shared earlier some videos about witches, but if you want an extremely informative and complete overview, I suggest the trilogy of videos about witches and witchcraft by the excellent In Praise of Shadows Youtube channel.
One about witchraft in history:
youtube
One about witches in literature (and art):
youtube
And one about witch movies (horror-centered):
youtube
In Praise of Shadows did a LOT of interesting videos about tons of spooky subjects - don't hesitate to go take a look!

Witches in fairytales: Fairytale-flavored
This post is a companion to my "Melting-pot" one. Here you shall find both A) Witches that are part of a fairytale world, but not based on a specific "type" or pre-existing character and B) Witches that are not from a fairytale work, rather coming from the worlds of fantasy or horror, but who still have a fairytale flavor to them. (And let's be honest, also some I forgot to add earlier Xp)
The Beldam from Coraline:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yubaba from Spirited Away:
Tumblr media
Howl's Moving Castle's The Witch of the Waste
Tumblr media
The witch from the animated movie "Brave"
Tumblr media
The Grand High Witch from Roald Dahl's "The Witches"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus
Tumblr media
The Three Mothers in Argento's Suspiria and Inferno (Mother of Tears doesn't count)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Queen Bavmorda from "Willow"
Tumblr media
The witch from "The VVitch"
Tumblr media
Xayide, from The Neverending Story
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The witch from the "Tales from the Darkside" movie (I should have put her next to the witch of Nightbooks)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hexenbiest from Grimm
Tumblr media
"La Pieuvre" from "La Cité des Enfants Perdus"
Tumblr media
And there are so many more... but a Tumblr post must unfortunately be limited!

Just a quick not friendly reminder: someone who has apologized for past mistakes, made amends for past actions, and clearly no longer holds past beliefs, is a far better person than one who digs up old dirt and uses a person's past that no longer exists against them.

Absolutely fine.
The pointy hats have antisemitic origins because Jews were forced to wear them to identify themselves as Jews and during lynchings (it was a mark of shame like a dunce hat except with more beatings and murder) but things like the disc world books aren’t antisemitic and it uses witch hats.
It’s about how you make the characters. The Witches by Roald Dahl is antisemitism without the witch hats, while movies like practical magic and the craft (both have lots of gross out potions with blood and vermin, immoral uses of magic and vengeance/curses) aren’t. One has witches as inhuman monsters. The others have witches as humans, flawed characters who have emotions and foibles who can act monstrously without being (secretly) nonhuman monsters.
The hat isn’t the problem. The dehumanizing is.
It’s super cool that you’re making something! I love witch media 💙💙 (I’m nonreligious Jewish from birth)
hi! gentile artist/writer here. I was wondering if having OCs with witch hats (and possibly some things also associated with witchcraft like potions, brooms or familiars) without the typical negative antisemitic tropes or imagery (hooked nose, green skin, blood libel, etc) would be okay?
I ask because I love witch hats aesthetically, and witchcraft-y themes like familiars in worldbuilding, but I’ve heard that witch hats at least possibly have antisemitic origins, not to mention the issues with standard Western depictions of witches.
I was thinking of it just being a thing where magic and familiars and stuff are just normalized in my story world, and “witch hats” aka wide-brimmed hats with points that sag or zigzag or rest in otherr shapes (as opposed to stiff conical hats, if that makes any difference - genuinely wouldn’t know), often with pretty/cute decorations on them are commonplace. No negative associations with the hat or witchcraft in canon - it’d be inherently neutral.
so yeah, would that be okay? Is there anything in particular I’d need to look out for or tread carefully with that? or should I just avoid the whole idea altogether?
thank you in advance for your time and answers, folks :] apologies if this is weirdly worded at all - I’m trying my best :’]

Reading through Witch Hat Atelier, extremely slowly because the art is amazing and I have to stop to marvel at every chapter. Everything about this series is a delight thus far, I would definitely recommend it.
(This is a panel redraw from the first chapter. I'm only on the second.)

here are the first five.
1. ‘and whatever walked there, walked alone.’
2. ‘embrace me.’
3. ‘dullahan’
4. ‘odette odile’
5. ‘these things take time.’

I was going through some old art and came across this and felt like it had really good bones. So I gave it another go and I really like how it turned out! 2 years and some patience paid off. (I'll put where I started under the cut for those curious.)

I just really want to shout out @quiddie and Brennan for creating the running theme of Suvi's "justification machine," because this is such a critically useful concept. The fact that when Steel approaches her about the memory wipe/sleeper agent deal, she explains that Suvi is a perfect (manchurian) candidate precisely because she is so smart, that she can come up with a reason for any impulse.
As someone who is in my own right probably too smart for my own good, this resonates with me to a frightening degree. My own people-pleasing mechanism, all the imposed desires and motivations and shitty habits I have accumulated over the years that are not really my own and do not really serve me -- my justification machine can always leap into action to defend them. Brennan said this in Mentopolis when he made Justin Fication a hound dog. If he's loyal to your conscience, you're in decent shape, but if he could just as easily do the same job for ambition, self-doubt, or even a sense of comfort or a fear of change.
Everyone does everything for a reason. Any action, anywhere, anytime, can be justified, if you're clever enough. That doesn't make it right.

Hey!!!
Just wanna ask...does Cyn look like the DD's too or does she look like Tessa wearing a Tessa?considering the human drawings (might be a dumb ask idkk)
Nope! She will actually look like this without Tessa's skin in fact.
It's supposed to be based off from my concept design for the Absolute Solver (or AKA Solver Witch)
I wanted her horns or spider limb looking thingy on her head to shape the bow somehow and thought it was a pretty cute idea :D but this is just a brainstorm design atm
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the AS' design is still a wip atm since I'm planning to change the top part of the body a bit more As for Cyn wearing the Tessa skin suit, I still haven't came up with a proper or finalized design for it yet since it's gonna be hard to design especially when I made future Cyn to look like that tbh 😭
But for the people that has Solver powers like Yeva, Nori, Uzi and Doll, they will have little physical changes since their Solver is kinda a bit nerfed and not the full solver itself. But for Uzi on the other hand, yeah she might go through the same thing and will remain using glamour or aka illusions to make herself look like what she usually look like.
