I'm disappointed in the lack of innovation in game controllers over the last 20 years or so.

We can't have peaked with the ps1 Dual Shock, can we? Everything since then seems to be minor modifications on that.

It's wireless, it's got a small touch pad, it's got analog triggers instead of digital ones, but how much else has changed?

Even Nintendo, who has been doing Weird Things with controllers since the Wii, also has their "Pro Controller" which is just "what if a ps1 Dual Shock, but Nintendo?"

I need more buttons! More sticks! More dpads! Make the n64 controller seem normal compared to the new controllers.

AITA for using the new charging cable my mom got with her new phone?

Hi all, I know the title sounds cut and dry but I'm genuinely so confused here.

Basically, I like to play roms on my phone via MyOldBoy! And I wanted to connect my switch pro controller to it so I could map the controls in the emulator and just have a bit of an easier time playing the games instead of just using the touch screen. (It's important to note that both ends of the cable are USB 3.0/C or whatever the ones that are rounded around the corners are. Its the only one we have). This is purely for convenience and I was going to return it when I was done.

I went upstairs to tell my mom to not get rid of it since I found a use for it and she got upset with me because I didn't ask her. I was confused since we dont have any charging plugs that accept USB 3.0/C and even if we do, we dont use them since my mom uses a wireless charger at home and a regular USB to USB 3.0/C in her car so she literally wouldn't get any use out of it and literally left it out on the counter.

I told her these things (admittedly interrupting her a few times when she was just listing the same things about how I was disrespectful and thoughtless) and told her I wasn't planning on keeping it and I was going to return it. She said I'm not allowed to use it anymore and I feel like that's just unwarranted since her phone is literally charging nearby on a wireless charging pad and she was already charging it in her car on the way back from the AT-T store.

Got myself an 8bitDo Retro Receiver for the Playstation which makes it possible to connect a wide range of different bluetooth controllers to the good ol' friend. I thought it would be great to use a 20th anniversary Dual Shock 4 for the occasion as it matches perfectly. They're sadly not available anymore, but I was lucky to get a hold of one good as new second hand.

The Dual Shock 4 is also my favourite Playstation controller ever made, as it has the perfect weight, shape and grip in my opinion. Kiki prefers the Dual Sense because of its heft, but I am personally not as strong as her, which make it less optimal for my baby hands.

Initially the Retro Receiver sadly had problems that caused the Memcard Pro from 8BitMods to not work properly. If you ask me the Memcard is essential if you have an Xstation, PSIO or just play a lot of PS1 games, so having it malfunction together with the new Retro Receiver made it practically useless. Feels like 8bitDo might have rushed this one a little bit, but luckily the issue has been fixed with a recent firmware update.

Anyway, with that issue out of the way, I have finally been able to sit down and play a variety of different games with the Retro Receiver. Among the ones I tried out tonight were classics such as Final Doom, Spyro the Dragon, Ridge Racer, Crash Bandicoot, Cosmic Race and Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. And so far I am very happy with the little bastard.

It feels very responsive, and I couldn't really notice any delay on the button presses. I am sure a silly ass speedrunner could pin-point the exact amount of frame lag buffer on the Retro Receiver, but as a more average player I doubt you would ever notice. I swept through the first level of Crash Bandicoot flawlessly with a clear gem in my hand by the end on my first try, so I'd say the thing works pretty well. It helps that the Dual Shock 4 is so gosh darn sexy though.

All in all I have now transformed this meager old Playstation into a veritable battle station of 32 bit goodness. It now has memory cards for days and wireless controllers up the wazoo. The Retro Receiver gets 8 wobbly textures out of 10.

imma give some leeway here despite him being allergic to team cooperation, i can’t play that well with the joycons anymore either (highkey hated that they got severe drift the more i played using them for this game).

We developed PlayStation 5 Pro with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind—as many have asked for a console that runs even higher fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60 frames per second. We achieved this on PlayStation 5 Pro with several key performance features.

Upgraded GPU – With PlayStation 5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PlayStation 5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.

Advanced Ray Tracing – We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PlayStation 5 console.

Hey Candy! I know this question probably has a difficult answer, but what is the best controller on the market today in your opinion? If any had to have the Candy seal of approval, which would it be?

oh jesus, that's a hard one. i probably can't pick one really good controller today, but I can give you a few options, based on how you'd use it.

for switch:

switch pro controller- $69.99

honestly, you can't do better than the default switch pro controller, though the d-pad is a bit inconsistent. its ergonomics are wonderful and it has a perfect weight in your hand. I've only ever experienced slight issue with joystick drift but nothing major after months of use. the motion controls and haptics are also very consistent and handy. this is my favorite PC controller, wired or wireless (of which the response time is near-unnoticeable.) also, it's a touch pricey for a controller, but I honestly think it's worth the money. if the price tag is simply too much, look for a PowerA alternative- that's another brand that makes really solid switch controllers (and controllers in general.)

for xbox:

victrix gambit- $99.99

the victrix gambit is a fantastic, comfortable, and very responsive controller. I hate the connected d-pad but that's cuz I don't play fighting games, and luckily it comes with a normal option you can switch to anyways, along with additional joystick lengths you can swap out (though why you even need that, I don't know.) I only have two gripes with this bad boy, and they are:

not wireless. for its price point, it really should have that option. and,

the price!!! $100 for a controller is nuts! find one of these second hand, like I did, and it'll be worth it.

for playstation:

SCUF impact pro- $169.99

this is essentially a base dualshock controller with some extra goodies- this is great, as the original dualshock 4 controller was already really solid. back paddles, extremely precise triggers, clicky buttons... if this thing sat more comfortably in my smaller hands itd be my go-to. that, and the joystick precision isn't what i'd like it to be for the price. this i also got second hand, because they're asking a whopping $180 for this thing, without customization! which is wild! do not buy one of these things for full price! that is insane!
