How Do F1 Cars Work?: Setup pt 1
Alright, so I wanted to explore car setups and how they effect F1 cars. Enjoy!
So, setting up an F1 car is a very complex process, They have to balance numerous elements in the car to suit things like weather, track type, driving styles, etc. But what do they actually alter on the car? And how does it effect the driving?
Altered Components:
Aerodynamics - The easiest and most obvious adjustments are to the aerodynamics, like the rear wings or front wings. These are usually the ones chosen for change in aerodynamics, but they might also change the side pods or diffusers to effect the downforce of the car. They most often change aerodynamics for circuit styles. A tight street circuit will require higher downforce set up, as it gives them more control around the corners. A classic circuit will often switch to a low downforce set up, which gives them speed on the straights. Most teams try to have a good balance, however.
Suspension - Suspension settings control how the car responds to bumps and turns. Whenever they discuss a car porpoising too much, it is usually because the suspension set up is wrong. They change variables including ride height (distance between lowest point of car and track surface), camber (angle of wheels relative to the vertical axel from the front), toe (angle of front wheel when viewed from above), stiffness of springs, and anti-roll bars (parts that connect left and right suspension systems, which help control body roll). For example, cars can have negative or positive camber, which really effect things like grip, tire wear, etc. These aspects of setup are usually altered to suit a drivers style and preferences.
Tire Setup - This essentially envelopes tire pressure and starting temperature, which impact grip and wear rates. For example, lower tire pressure increases the grip, but leads to faster degradation. Higher does the opposite. This is usually altered depending on track temperature and style, or even ti make up for their weak areas. If they do not have good tire management, for example, they may alter the tire setup to degrade slower.
Differential - This controls the relative speed of the rear wheels, a big part of traction control. It is adjusted to either open or lock more. An open differential allows the rear wheels to rotate at different speeds, helping with corner entry but leading to oversteer a lot of the time. A locked differential keeps the wheels rotating together, offering stability on exits but leading to a lot of understeer. This is an aspect that is often changed to suit driver preference. Some can handle the oversteer very well, but other find understeer easier to deal with.
Brake Balance - This is the balance between the front and rear brakes, and is used to prevent lockup (when too much force is applied to the brakes, causing the disc to stop or rotate slower than the car's motion) and improve stability. This is altered by changing the bias, or distribution of braking force, and is often discussed in terms of percentages. More rear brake bias improves rotation in corners, but increases chance of rear lockup. More front brake bias stabilized braking, but can make turn-in more challenging.
Engine Mapping- This refers to the software settings in the car that controls how the engine delivers power. Things like throttle response, fuel injection, ignition timing, and turbo settings are all altered. All of it changes how a car accelerates, responds to stimuli, and consumes fuel. The different types of maps include qualifying maps (max power for short time), race maps (balanced and conservative), fuel-saving maps (usually end of race), and wet maps (softer throttle response, less sensitive car). ERS Deployment is a big part of this, and refers to the management of the kinetic and heat generators. They choose different ERS deployment depending on what they plan to do. For example, if they are planning on trying to overtake they will charge their battery and then use a lot of power to give the car a boost.
Gear Ratios - These ratios determine the relationship between the RPM (engine speed) and the speed of the wheels. There are eight forward gears in F1, and each one changes this ratio to some degree. The ratios dictate how much the engine must rev for the wheels to turn at a certain speed. The two major types of gear ratios are long ratios and short ratios. Long ratios reduce the torque but allow for higher top speeds, suited for tracks with long straights. Short ratios provide more torque which allows for faster acceleration, better for twisty tracks.
Setup Types:
While there are so many different aspects to set up, there are a few main types that most teams follow. Between them, a variety of factors change, but the core of them remains the same.
High-Downforce - One of the most basic set ups, it prioritizes grip on corners by increased downforce. Usually used for twisty, slow-medium circuits like Monaco or Singapore.
Low-Downforce - The other more basic setup, it lowers generated downforce to minimize drag and optimize for straight-line speed. It does sacrifice corner grip, so is best suited for classic circuits like Silverstone or Monza.
Wet - In wet races DRS is disabled, and drag is at an all time high. So teams usually focus on getting a huge amount of downforce, making car less sensitive, and making sure their tire set up is as grippy as possible. The differential is also changed, as drivers should be able to keep traction, ride height is raised, and suspension is softened. This is kind of a subsection of the high-downforce set up, though for different reasons.
High/Low Temp - Both hot and cold temperatures have massive impacts on F1 cars. So if they know they will have a race with an extreme on either side, the set up must be altered to reflect that. In hot Singapore, for example, they must lower tire pressure, change the camber, and boost the cooling systems to avoid overheating engine and degrading tires fast. In cold Montreal, tire pressures are raised, brakes are placed in different settings to keep warm, and the camber is also changed.
Alright, I will continue my discussion on setups in next post, as this one is getting quite long.
Cheers,
-B

Little FC update: I deleted and removed some clutter from the engine bay. Starting with the leaking and complicated swirl pot setup. Then I purchased the greddy compression tube along with new charge pipes. The old setup w/ stock throttle body tube made it so the charge pipe had to do a 180 and to be removed to service oil filter. That is no longer the case! And it looks a bit more sleek. I also got an oversized air filter to replace the teeny cone filter. This changed the turbo flutter noise. Next up I had redone alot of the chassis wiring, IT WAS A MESS before, been cleaning it up as I go. Fixed a few drive-ability issues along the way. Then finally the parts table.. I got some new coilovers to replace the mismatched set. It had 10k front springs and 10k rear springs on dampers with zero adjustment. Now sitting on 8k front, and 6k rear - 32 way adjustable. I got powered by MAX rear links for camber and toe adjustment. I plan to raise the car a little to fix geometry and get clearance for the 245 square setup. It had a few other minor things I got to address as well. I added stock sway bars back on, with adjustable end links to eliminate preload. Power steering lines leaking- replaced with new. Also got some new steering rack bellow boots. Upgraded to an FD Alternator, fixed tps wiring, and got a front lip for the S5 front bumper.

mexico hopes yay/nay?
the only thing i'm slightly worried about is that the ferrari pu previously had issues in mexico (presumably due to the smaller turbos?) in 2022 they lost something like seven tenths a lap average bcs of it
they seem to have mitigated this in 2023 but the sf-24 has such different characteristics than the sf-23 i'm not sure how much that'll translate
all the teams will deal with overheating however and have to bring track-specific upgrades, it's not like any singular car will have a large advantage in this area. we'll just have to see who nails the cooling, aside from singapore quali ferrari have been really good about their setup and track-specific adjustments recently
using the softest compounds might make things a little easier for them as they won't need to worry about the warmup as much on the c5 compared to the c4
#9.75 fm#also unsure if charles' older pu will be a detriment here#imo this track kind of sucks but#the technical aspects of high altitude are cool

the idea of owning an old car is so romantic and joyous, but the reality is honestly just painful.
a good compromise in my opinion is to take a nicely kept old chassis and swap a modern engine and drivetrain into it to give it a bit of reliability and also a bit more performance.
a dream for me would be to buy a Mercedes W124 Wagon in decent condition, but not perfect condition, and swap out the questionable 90s engine and transmission in favour of a modern Lexus V8 and the 10-speed auto that comes with it. despite being double the displacement, it would likely have better fuel efficiency and make triple the power.
another dream would be to get an old kei hatchback, something like a suzuki Alto, and put a modern 3-cylinder 1.5L hybrid engine from a toyota yaris into it. it only makes 90hp, but compared to the stock 40hp, thats pretty good, especially in a car that would weigh about 700kg including a battery. it would also be insanely fuel efficient being half a ton lighter than a yaris hybrid. the only issue would be crash safety, which can be aided with the addition of a roll cage and some modern seats.
one ive had in my mind for ages is to take a very basic E30 BMW and replace the engine with a K20C1 engine from a civic type R. sure you could go n/a with a K24 and get it to rev its ass off to make a similar power figure, but with the turbo 2L, you have all the power and torque you could ever need and with a BMW 6 speed behind it, one of the best gearboxes money could buy. pair it all with a well setup LSD, some adjustable dampers and a good set of brakes and you have a street car that would never boring. if only they sold the wagon in australia.

Suspension Upgrades YOU Need for a Porsche 911 Turbo
In some past articles and videos we have discussed the best upgrades to get more power out of the Porsche 997 Turbo. Our long history of modifying the Porsche 911 Turbo cars has brought us to our most recent video where we talk about the best suspension upgrades to really get the car to handle. The 997 Turbo like most 911 isn’t made for aggressive enthusiast. Its quiet sounding exhaust, tall ride height where you could stick a fist in the wheel wells, and less than stellar handling is designed for the guy who just wants to own a Porsche Turbo. Lets be honest, everything that is done from Porsche is perfect for that guy. But you and I are not him and we want to have GT3 Cup handling and drive the piss out of our cars to the edge.
youtube
Vivid Racing and myself have big proponents of KW Suspensions as our coilover of choice for our Project Cars and customers. Having used them on everything from my personal Porsche 997 Turbo, 997.2 Turbo S, 991 Turbo, and plenty of other cars, their is no substitute. KW Coilovers are highly engineered in Germany to perform the best in the purpose of that vehicle. Proven in events like the 24 hours of Nurburgring, KW does testing on a 7 post shock dyno in its facility to the level of an F1 team. This is not some overpriced Chinese shock with 36 way adjustable dampening and a cute brand name. KW is the real thing. Their coilovers range from the V1 to their latest V5. In my opinion, the V3 is the best dual purpose coilover. With a monotube shock setup, independent rebound and compression, front progressive spring and a rear linear spring with helper spring, the KW V3 gives the best for a daily driver that wants to hit the mountain roads or setup impressive times on the track.
Shop KW Coilovers Here
Coilovers cannot be the only thing to change how your car handles. So we recommend doing a set of sway bars. Sway bars help balance the cars over and under steer. Even though the car has factory sway bars, doing adjustable, larger diameter sway bars help you really stiffen up the handling and get a neutrally balanced car. With the adjustment holes on the bar, you are able to alter how much over steer or under steer the car has. Most sway bars work with the factory sway bar links. Though for those wanting to really dial in the adjustments, getting aftermarket sway bar links is helpful.
Shop Porsche Sway Bars Here
The last essential suspension upgrade to the Porsche 997 Turbo we feel is the rear upper control arms. Companies such as RSS, SPL, and others manufacture these for the 997 Carrera and Turbo cars. These rear arms also know as Dog Bones, help dial in the camber and toe for a proper alignment. These control arms are usually a billet aluminum center with adjustable spherical rod ends on either side. This replaces the static rubber bushing dog bone. The new rear arms give a more rigid response which means better reaction to how the car handles with minor inputs to the steering wheel.
Shop Porsche Control Arms Here
There are more suspension upgrades that can be done to a Porsche 911 Turbo. These 3 items are great starters and will dramatically change how the car handles on the street and track. Giving you a more responsive and enjoyable, handling vehicle is the goal. Each one of these parts is top tier and purpose designed to meet the quality and expectations of Porsche owners. Remember that all of these parts are not any good with a proper vehicle alignment, good tires, and of course your skills as the driver!

The Hidden Mechanism Driving Markets Every Quarter Let’s be honest—trading isn’t always the thrill ride they make it out to be in Hollywood. In reality, it’s like trying to dance to the beats of invisible drums, and every quarter, the tempo changes. This magical moment called 'quarterly liquidity pools' is when market sentiment shifts, volume explodes, and the FX market behaves like an unpredictable rock concert. But don’t worry, we’re not here to sell you concert tickets. Instead, we’re about to unravel the mysteries of quarterly liquidity pools, and trust me, once you know the secrets, you’ll never trade the same way again. Grab your popcorn—or, if you're serious, your trading journal—because this is about to get deep! Quarterly Liquidity Pools: Not Your Average Money Puddle Picture this: You’re shopping during a quarterly sale at your favorite store. Everyone’s running around grabbing deals—some are being smart about it, while others are hoarding neon-colored scarves they’ll regret later. Well, liquidity pools are just like that sale. They happen every quarter as big institutional players—think central banks, major funds, and the kind of folks who don’t blink at a ten-million-dollar position—start adjusting their portfolios. This periodic reshuffling creates massive opportunities, and if you know where to look, you can trade right alongside these giants. Why Are Quarterly Liquidity Pools Important? Imagine you're in a crowded auction where the stakes keep changing. During quarterly rebalancing, institutional traders are essentially auctioning their positions, creating larger-than-usual liquidity flows. These aren’t your regular day-to-day market movements. Instead, it’s like adding a turbo boost to your vehicle right when you're overtaking. The key to using this to your advantage is knowing when these liquidity pools form and where they're going to show up. If you've ever found yourself taking a position only to feel like the market turns against you the moment you hit 'buy,' you might have stumbled into the liquidity zones set by the big guys. They don't just play with us retail traders, they play us. The trick? To see their moves before they make them. The Secret Playbook: Tracking Liquidity Pools So how do we track these quarterly liquidity pools and get in on the action? Here’s a step-by-step guide to tap into the secrets: - Know the Quarter-End Dynamics: The market reacts like clockwork during each quarter-end—March, June, September, and December. Institutional players are rebalancing portfolios, booking profits, and taking fresh positions. This causes exaggerated price moves and provides traders with solid setups. - Follow the Money Flow: Always keep your eyes on big capital flows. Fund managers typically reallocate assets quarterly based on updated economic projections or risk assessments. Platforms like Bloomberg or Forex Factory are your go-to resources for these money flows. According to data from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), roughly 80% of FX transactions are conducted by large institutional players—meaning they control the market tides. Follow the currents and you won't sink. - The Magic of Volume Profiles: Use a volume profile indicator to determine key liquidity zones. These zones are the playgrounds of large traders. During quarterly periods, these indicators flash like neon signs, showing where significant buying and selling are happening. For instance, volume peaks on the EUR/USD can often indicate that liquidity is thick, and that’s where you’ll want to surf the market wave. - Don’t Be a Sheep, Be a Shepherd: Many traders panic when price approaches major quarterly levels, expecting a reversal. Smart money, however, knows that the liquidity at these levels serves as fuel. So instead of avoiding these levels, think of them as opportunities to load up. Remember the words of legendary trader George Soros: “Markets are constantly in a state of uncertainty and flux; money is made by discounting the obvious and betting on the unexpected.” Contrarian Play: Turning Myths Into Gold Myth-busting time! One of the biggest myths about Forex trading is that “following the herd” keeps you safe. You know what following the herd does? It puts you right in the middle of a stampede. And in Forex, that’s usually where you get trampled. A smart contrarian move, particularly during quarterly reshuffles, is to fade retail sentiment. If everyone's getting jittery about a sudden spike due to liquidity adjustments, it might just be the perfect time to take the opposite trade. The truth is that liquidity pools work like a magnet. During these quarterly transitions, price gets pulled towards these pockets of liquidity to fill the institutional orders. If you understand this, you can use it to ride the momentum rather than getting whipsawed by unexpected volatility. The Forgotten Strategy: Why Patience Equals Profits Here's an old secret most traders overlook—patience. Yep, that thing we never think we have time for. During quarterly liquidity events, being patient is like holding onto a winning lottery ticket until the jackpot increases. Wait for those pools to form, watch the price settle into the zone, and then—when everyone else is running scared—make your move. Think of it like this: You’re at a blackjack table, and everyone’s betting impulsively after every card. Then there’s you—watching, waiting, and placing your bet just as the dealer’s about to bust. Smart, calculated, and just a little smug. That's the edge patience gives you in Forex. Why Most Traders Get It Wrong (And How You Can Avoid It) Most traders fail at leveraging quarterly liquidity pools because they’re focused on the wrong data. They look at the price but ignore the volume. Or they assume a price drop means it's time to go short. That’s like buying a pair of pants because it's on sale even though it doesn’t fit—you’ll be left uncomfortable and looking silly. Instead, focus on where liquidity is pooling. To really make this effective, you need access to real-time liquidity data, like what our StarseedFX community offers. These tools help you see where orders are being stacked—that’s right, all those clusters of market orders. Are you ready to trade like a pro? Get these exclusive real-time updates to boost your strategy: Forex News Today. Insider Tactics: Predicting Price Action with Liquidity Pools Here’s a killer trick that’s rarely talked about: anticipated liquidity zones. Essentially, you can predict price behavior by mapping out quarterly liquidity levels based on historical data. Use tools like Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) to determine these levels. When big banks want to rebalance, they don’t come knocking—they stomp. VWAP helps you get an idea of where those stomps might happen. Emerging Trend Alert: AI Meets Liquidity Pools A major underground trend right now is the use of AI to analyze liquidity pools. Machine learning algorithms, trained on decades of market data, can pinpoint exactly when liquidity conditions are ideal for entering or exiting trades. According to a recent Deloitte report, AI-enhanced trading is giving professional traders a significant edge—it’s like playing a video game with all the cheat codes enabled. If you're not tapping into these AI insights yet, you’re basically showing up to a Formula 1 race on a bicycle. To take advantage of automated strategies and AI signals, consider our Smart Trading Tool for a head start: Smart Trading Tool. How to Win the Quarterly Game Like a Pro So, here’s how to take everything you’ve learned and put it into action: - Plan Ahead: Mark your calendars for March, June, September, and December. Start preparing for quarter-end opportunities a few weeks in advance by mapping potential liquidity zones. - Analyze Volume: Use a volume profile tool to understand where liquidity pools are forming. Platforms like TradingView are great for tracking this. - Be a Contrarian: Track retail sentiment. Use it as a counter-indicator. When retail is fleeing, it’s time to enter the arena. - Leverage AI: Machine learning tools are no longer the future; they're here and now. Use them to gain an edge in identifying liquidity-driven opportunities. Wrap-Up: Liquidity Pools, Elite Tactics, and Riding the Waves Quarterly liquidity pools are not just buzzwords; they are one of the most underutilized opportunities in the Forex market. By understanding how liquidity flows at the end of each quarter, using volume analysis, and leveraging tools that provide real-time liquidity insights, you can trade with precision and confidence. Moreover, being patient and using AI to augment your strategies will help you stay ahead of the pack. So next time you see volatility spike at quarter-end, don't run—strategize. 2024 Aston Martin Valour Review: Boosting Appeal with a V12 Manual
One shift in the Aston Martin Valour and you're hooked. It's the nature of that shift that's key—a manual gear change connected to a V12 engine via metal and rods, all wrapped in a bespoke body, yours for £1.5m plus options. While Pagani initiated the trend with the Pagani Utopia's manual gearbox, Aston Martin's front-engine V12 setup offers unique bragging rights. The Valour, celebrating Aston’s 110th anniversary, is limited to 110 units, all of which are already sold out. Quick OverviewPros: Smooth manual gearbox, classic handling characteristicsCons: Polarizing design, outdated infotainment system What’s new?The design, inspired by the 'Muncher'—a unique Aston racer from the 1977 Le Mans—is certainly a talking point. While opinions in the CAR office are split, my take is that it looks stunning. The aggressive rear diffuser is tuned for road use, and the duck-tail boot lid helps reduce lift, though neither adds downforce. Built on the Vantage platform, the Valour features the previous generation's twin-turbo V12, now delivering 705bhp and 555lb ft, slightly more than the 2022 Vantage special edition. The 0-62mph time remains unchanged, which makes sense given the switch from an eight-speed automatic to a manual gearbox. The Valour retains rear-wheel drive and a mechanical limited-slip differential, while a new stainless steel exhaust with a 1mm wall thickness enhances its sound and reduces weight. SpecificationsThe Valour features bespoke suspension with unique adaptive dampers, springs, and anti-roll bars. It offers three drive modes: Sport, Sport+, and Track, which adjust throttle response and exhaust note.
