Wintertime prompts

Pebbles crumble off the wall and skitter away into the depths when Tup shifts his foot. The main chamber of this burrow—abandoned—is only just big enough for him if he curls up like one of this planet’s armoured critters, knees up to his chest and feet braced practically in front of his nose. He can just about reach most of his pouches if he twists. There’s even a curiously perfect shelf in the orthoquartzite to keep his DC-15 on.

The desert flows for miles and miles all around him. Even his training partner is several klicks east in his own burrow, waiting out the heat of the day. Sweat has made his thermal suit damp and sticky, his hair barely dry after an hour resting in the shade, and his face burns with the arid, inescapable heat.

The little device in his hand beeps as it comes back online. He scrambles to unplug it from his power pack lest it overheats again; gingerly, he sets everything on the rock to cool.

The holodisc has only one item on it: a copy. Everything valuable he’s left in his bunk on Kamino. This is the last piece of home he’s brought with him, the talisman on which he’s pinned his hope and, at this point, his will to live.

Tup has the message memorised, but he reaches out to trigger the recorder again anyway.

Immediately a bright cyber-blue fills the little burrow. A clone figure appears over the disc and resolves a little shakily into Rex, smiling wryly at the ’corder.

His mouth starts moving; the disc, modified for stealth training. remains silent, so Tup fills in his every word and inflection in this mind.

Rex’s eyes gaze towards him with tender fondness and dart away, soft. Crows feet make him look older than he his, but his genuine, quiet joy is as infectious as a cadet’s. Tup aches to touch—to hear. Hologram Rex moves and shudders and laughs at himself. Tup swallows through a dry throat and doesn’t quite choke.

It’ll be worth it, he used to think to himself. It’s going to be worth it.

It will.

But right now, nothing feels worth this. Nothing feels worth being so far from the five-hundred and first, from Torrent, from…

It will be worth it, once he’s made it. Once he’s on that transport back to the front with new armour and new scars and the data chit qualifying him as ARC.

Right now, the desert flows for miles, and miles, and miles. Hot wind dusts the crests of shimmering dunes and everything is a haze of gold. His training partner is several klicks east, and home…

Home is waiting on the other side of the holodisc.

There is a cost for resurrection, even for a vessel such as Charlotte. As a vessel for the primordial void, Charlotte's body undergoes a supernaturally rapid decomposition after death, decaying so completely and so quickly that in a matter of a couple scant hours, there will be nothing left of her whatsoever. What took a mere fraction of a day to break down, however, will take ( at least ) a few days to reassemble. ( To date, the shortest amount of time it's taken for Charlotte to return is 49 hours; the longest absence was 8 days. )

In the time between her complete decomposition and her reappearance in our reality, the vessel we know as Charlotte must be reassembled, rather painstakingly, by Khaos itself. Just as it did when it first created this vessel, Khaos brings together the fragments of a being: personality traits, memories, stories, and eventually, the physical form, too. Piece by piece, it reassembles the killed and obliterated doll and then, once it feels she is once more ready, like on that sunny day in June all those years ago, it reintroduces this vessel we know as Charlotte back into this reality, this world, this life. As such, it appears, for the most part, that while she may not be totally invincible or capable of auto-resurrection on a god-like level, Charlotte has no real reason to fear death. If she dies, she can be almost certain that she will be back to cause more trouble in no time. But resurrection does not come without a cost and this is a fact Charlotte has become increasingly aware of the more she has gone and come back, gone and come back. . .

"There's never enough...to fill the hole up again." To make a long story short, Stephen King's Pet Sematary revolves around the resurrection of dead things ( animals and people ) and how sometimes, dead is better, because nothing that comes back to life ever comes back exactly the way it was before. There will always be something missing, something wrong. Charlotte's resurrection, at the hands of Khaos, is not an exception to this idea. Each time Charlotte dies and comes back, she may seem mostly intact and to be picking up exactly where she left off, but she is not, in fact, the same. With each "respawn," the vessel will be adjusted and changed based on what the Void deems necessary, but mostly (!) the process of reassembly itself means that there will "never be enough" to make Charlotte exactly as she was again.

Just as a "wound never [seems] to fill in completely" despite being considered healed and healthy once more, the resurrected vessel will, by nature of chaos and decay, contain less and this is the cost of resurrection. For better or worse, there remains a heavy consequence for dying and so, as comical as it sounds, Charlotte has learned to take dying more seriously. With each resurrection, there runs the risk of her losing memories and perhaps some of her humanity, but most assuredly, she loses more of what makes her her... More specifically, with each resurrection, Charlotte grows colder, steadier in a way, and while she may seem more or less the same on the outside ( as Khaos wants to maintain her likeness and essence ), by and by, if you look closely, you won't find the same spark in her eyes that she has now to set her apart from the cold abyss of the primordial entity that resides inside her. Like a wound, Charlotte never heals completely. There is never enough to fill the vessel again. But if there is not enough of her to come back after death, then what must fill the vessel upon its return is obvious: absence. Absence is the cost of resurrection.

How I think XH Wrap Presents 💖

[This is a bonus for Prompt 6: Wrapping presents together]

Gunil: Very meticulous-- is making sure each present he wraps is wrapped perfectly and signed before moving on to the next [True Neutral].

Jungsu: Absolutely makes the prettiest bows on top of each present he wraps, which makes him finish last in the present wrapping race (dubbed by nugget time) [Neutral Good].

Gaon: Wraps super fast! Wraps all the gifts he has bought in less than an hour-- no matter the amount [½ of Chaos duo].

O.de: Absolutely calm, each present getting at max three pieces of sticky tape before pushing them into their individual piles [Chaotic Neutral]. (Finishes second in the race).

Jun Han: Makes sure that each person gets their own unique wrapping paper and that each present is wrapped nicely (w/ or w/o a bow) before moving on to the next [Lawful Good].

Jooyeon: Is wrapping as fast as Gaon but somehow has managed to wrap himself up while everyone wasn’t looking [Other ½ of Chaos duo].

I first read Percy Jackson under lockdown & liked it fine so naturally I’m rereading it and I’d entirely forgotten how…bizarre 3-5 start out. Even reading them back-to-back in practically one sitting, each of those books open with the feeling that you’ve missed a whole book! 3 takes place just a few months after 2, 4 takes place a few months after that, and we skip A YEAR for 5? what is HAPPENING. Obviously in a series like this you EXPECT a devolution but it’s usually pretty slow! It doesn’t just break the formula like this! It’s weird and off putting! It’s bad, frankly!
