Edmonton Brewing and Malting Company LTD. Building is located on a former industrial site consisting now of only the brewery and an associated administration building. Built in 1913 for the Edmonton Brewing and Malting Company to replace their smaller plant in Rossdale, the brewery passed through numerous owners, ending under the banner of Molson Canada. Historical Designation obtained in 2015. The site exhibits Classical Revival elements popular in turn of the 20th century industrial buildings. These include brick pilasters, window arches, dentils and modillions which are found throughout the brewery, but are particularly noticeable on the more modest administration building. The main brewery building, particularly the tower, is enhanced by a different style. Designed by Bernard Barthel, a Chicago-based architect known for his Germanic Medieval breweries, the building is detailed with simulated battlements and turrets, a barbican or gatehouse, as well as the numerous semicircular arches over entries and windows, and combined with the monumental massing and vertical orientation, it effectively communicates a Bavarian castle-like aesthetic. The Edmonton Brewing and Malting Company LTD. Building is significant as part of an industrial site, for its association with the brewing industry, for its functional, yet artistic design and style, and for its association with its architect. First @doughnutparty of 2021 enjoyed with my brother @garrettpich • Edmonton Brewery District. The temperature is getting lower outside but these flavours more than make up for the cold weather. This yummy selection were placed inside a groovy graphic grey and white Limited Edition Winter City Box: Funky Monkey [banana + chocolate cookie crumble + caramel] (the banana flavour really shines) Aloha Friday [pineapple + coconut + shortbread + lime] (my personal favourite of this trio of flavours I sampled) LVC [lemon + vanilla + cardamom] (v) (loved the lemon and the cardamom gave it a real “Je ne sais quoi”) On one side of the box it reads: “(for the most yay, eat right away)” Needless to say we followed the instructions.
