coffee @ Brown Butter Cafe

Brown Butter Cafe is a locally-owned individual coffee shop in the far south side, in a small complex that also houses a dental clinic, a medi-centre & ... who knows what. I haven’t been here before, nor has my friend Christina. The complex is “double-sided”: one side faces the main road that you must travel on in order to turn into this complex, & the other side faces the parking lot. We went to the “front” - ie: the side that faces the main road. Sadly, we saw a sign at the door that says “please use front door”. .. It was all confusing haha eventually, we made a loop & ended up on the side that faced the parking lot. I guess it makes sense.. but it was just a hassle, esp when they had their cafe sign on what we thought was the front door. ANYWAY.

You’ll find yourself facing this cute counter.

Their menu: typical coffee shop menu, if you asked me, with coffee & teas choices, along with ~5 of each type of cafe food (sandwiches/panani, muffin, etc). Not extensive, but “average”. They do have a raspberry latte that caught my attention!

The decor, in general, was nice & minimalistic, with a touch of greens by the window.

Loved this display!

I also liked the hanging lights off the wood panel structure.

I ended up with a black Americano (& so did Christina). It was diff than other Americanos I’ve tasted bcos this one was very smoky in comparison. I neither hated it nor liked it, it was just.. . different. The aroma was breathtaking (literally) though! Esp after working so many evening shifts recently, I can’t go on without my morning coffee. ..

We went around ~11:45am, & about half the place was filled up. As we were leaving after 1 hr, most of the seats were filled. For a cafe situated in a line of offices, it’s a decent size, I think. However, the space seemed bare. While I understand it’s hard to achieve a balance of “privacy” vs a sense of coziness (??).. . this place didn’t give me that “hanging out” kind of vibe where you would go for a catch-up session. Its atmosphere (in my humble opinion) resembled a space for business meetings or working on something individually (whether it’s reading/studying or on your laptop for work). I can’t say how it’s like at other times during their working hrs but when we went, we were the only table of customers that were holding a catch-up session & to be honest, it was kinda weird. I’m sure our voices weren’t loud enough to disturb or disrupt others but everyone was just so quiet or they were by themselves so it was hard not to be mindful.

In any case, the decor was pleasing but the atmosphere didn’t really appeal to me =(

Oreo devil tea @ Heeretea

Did you know. .. Heeretea has a rather “interesting” background story?

I sure didn’t till I read up about it.

Heeretea is actually NOT a Taiwanese franchise :O shocker #1. It is a “branch” company of HeyTea, which is based in my hometown G-Zhou. Shocker #2! I haven’t been back to G-Zhou for several yrs now so I’m not familiar with what’s ‘hot’ over there. But apparently, HeyTea has been around for some time; they are famous for their cheese foam/cheese cap/cheese foam-cap in their drinks. They then entered the markets of neighbouring cities like ShenZhen, ZhongShan, etc, still in mainland China --> eventually, they arrived in Hong Kong, but under a different name, called Heeretea. The way I see it, Heeretea is kinda like the HK branch of HeyTea, bcos from my research, HeyTea doesn’t exist in HK, it’s only in mainland China. & vice versa- no Heeretea in China. It’s sorta strange but *shrugs*.

Anyway, there was also a lawsuit that happened in summer 2018. An exec person from HeyTea sued an exec at Heeretea for leaking HeyTea/Heeretea’s confidential business info to their brother & other friend(s), resulting in a Mr. Tea company (in HK) that has VERY similar business strategies & menu/recipes! ooooOoooh the drama!

But we are in Canada, thankfully lol recently Heeretea opened its 1st location in Edmonton~ It’s also the company’s 1st location in CANADA! & guess where it is. It’s by U of A campus!

Clara & I came a few days ago, ~4:30pm. The place was bigger than I had expected, with a lot of empty space. Maybe they had a line-up issue (for being too popular?) when they 1st started, so there was an empty area in the middle of the store in front of their counter. When we arrived, there was only another table of 2 customers. Super.. . sad-feeling. Like it was just so bare.

I really liked the minimalistic approach to their interior design. I don’t know what their other locations around the globe are like, but the main theme here is white, with nice lighting choices & wall decor in text form.

They have this corner that’s kind of like a photo-zone, with this on the wall. Many Instagram-worthy spots around the whole shop.

The above picture is like Heeretea’s “logo”. I like it ! It’s a simple illustration & it rested on the wall behind a bar table (that comfortably seats 8-10 ppl).

Interesting-sounding drinks that I’ve never seen before. To be fair, you can’t really go by my knowledge (perhaps this is like standard in bbt places these days; I wouldn’t know) - I’m not big on bbt & I would never suggest going to get bbt. .. I’m more “Americano no room for cream please”.

I got the Oreo devil tea, which was 6.99... which is considered their avg pricing =/ & Clara got the brulee milk tea.

The left one was Clara’s, & it actually had a semi-solid brulee “cap” on top. Totally looked like a dessert from aerial view. On the right is my Oreo devil tea. Both of us got 50% level sugar & less ice.

. . . Yup, that pile of Oreo crumbs is the entire Oreo component in my drink. ..... . *sigh* Let’s start from there & go downwards. Very little Oreo that makes the drink devilish bcos the name totally tricked me into thinking it was REALLY Oreo =( The foam cap was cheesy. I’m not a fan & it was especially salty for me. Not crazy salty but. .. enough to consistently taste the saltiness throughout. Maybe it had to do with me halving the sugar. Anyway, the main portion of the drink was some tea & cream; you could taste tea in it quite well. Mine had a stronger tea flavour than Clara’s (hers was like just.. . slightly sweetened cream). The tea flavour diminished after I stirred it all together with the foam. It was so weird & displeasing. The sago at the bottom was the best part. Why? 1st, I liked the consistency; it was chewy, which I prefer. I hate soft & mushy sago... It was also sweet bcos it contains black sugar.

All in all, a total miss for me! :’( It came up to be >$8 for this drink, & I was like.. . no.....

This is why I stick to simple black coffee <3
