The de Young Museum is located in Golden Gate Park. It exhibits American art from the 17th century to the present, international modern art, textiles, and tribal art. The modernist copper-clad building, created by Herzog and de Meuron and Fong and Chan, is expected to oxidize over time and take on a greenish tone and a texture to mimic the park’s eucalyptus trees. It opened in 2005. Featured: One of a “Pair of Sphinxes” , circa 1912 • Concrete • Arthur Putnam • These sphinxes replaced the original pair commissioned from Arthur Putnam for the entrance to the Fine Arts Building of the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition. The building's Egyptian Revival architecture reflected a fascination with ancient Egypt, inspired by archaeological discoveries such as the 1858 excavation of the Great Sphinx at Giza. The architecture also reinforced the perception of a continuous link between the cultural accomplishments of ancient Egyptian civilization and those of Europe and America. Although the Egyptian Revival building was demolished in 1929 and replaced by a succession of new museum structures, the sphinxes remain, marking the origins of the de Young museum. The Vintage Vase (Le Poème de la Vigne), 1877-1882• Bronze • Gustave Doré • (part 2) Gustave Doré (1832-1883) created this vase for French winemakers who exhibited it at the 1878 Paris World's Fair. Decorating the colossal wine vessel are cupids, satyrs, and bacchantes associated with Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. The foundry shipped this version of the vase to San Francisco for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, after which M. H. de Young purchased and then donated the vase to the de Young museum. Source: plaque on site. Prince Rupert City Hall, 424 Third Avenue West, Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The first stone was laid for the present Prince Rupert City Hall on April 20, 1938, and the building opened in June 1939. It was constructed by Alan Gray and Stilwell Logan as the Federal Building, and was built to house a post office and other branches of the Canadian Government. Designed by architect Max Downing, with Northwest Coast motifs by noted Tsimshian artist William Jeffrey, the building remains the city's finest example of the period's Art Deco / Moderne style of architecture. One of the most interesting elements in this building is the originality of the subtle low-relief ornament, based on Northwest Coast design. After the building became City Hall in 1964 these details were painted. The Mechanics Monument, is a bronze sculpture group by Douglas Tilden, located at the intersection of Market, Bush and Battery Streets in San Francisco, California, United States. The 21 feet (6.4 m) high Bronze and granite monument is dated with the Roman Numerals MDCCCXCIX (1899) but the actual completion date was the 30th of March 1901. When originally erected in 1901, it was the center of a fountain, but following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the basin was eliminated. The monument is inscribed: “Dedicated to Mechanics by James Mervyn Donahue in Memory of his Father Peter Donahue.” Source: plaque on site & Wikipedia #portofcall #travel #wanderlust #globalgypsy #details #FinancialDistrict #shoreleave #godisinthedetails #wandering #adventure #wander #thedevilisinthedetails #SanFrancisco #USA #California #SFO #statue #monument #TheMechanicsMonument #DouglasTilden (at San Francisco, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgN7KTPDysU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Wandering near our ship’s berth on South Franklin Street. Juneau, Alaska. Ore Car • The Mucker, also known as a shoveler or car filler, had the back-breaking job of shoveling ore or waste rock into small 2½-ton mine ore cars like this one from the Alaska Juneau gold mine (Yellow the me from photo). Used primarily to develop tunnels, these small 2½-ton ore cars transported waste rock rather than the gold-bearing ore that was hauled to the surface in 10-ton ore cars. Muckers moved a lot of rock. To get an ounce of gold, miners had to excavate 22 tons of ore, more than 2 dump trucks full. They excavated almost 100 million tons of ore and rock to extract 3½ million ounces of gold. Innovative engineering, mechanization, and leadership made the AJ Alaska's single largest gold producer. - source Sign on site. #wander #travel #wanderlust #globalgypsy #cruiseship #details #seaman #godisinthedetails #orecar #wandering #traveladdict #traveladdicts #traveladdiction #goldmine #portofcall #thedevilisinthedetails #worldtraveladdict #awesome #adventurist #Juneau #adventure #USA #Alaska #JNU #FotoQuartet #northtoalaska (at Juneau, Alaska) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgBgXNRuKdR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sea days offer a great time to look at photos from your journey and reflect on some of the ports of call I have visited whilst onboard the Ruby Princess. Memories of my visit to the Hotel del Coronado - details from the reception and main lobby of this historic beachfront hotel in the city of Coronado, just across the San Diego Bay from San Diego, California. Built in 1887, with it’s grand opening February 19, 1888. It is one of the few surviving examples of an American architectural genre: the wooden Victorian beach resort. It is the second largest wooden structure in the United States (after the Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook, Oregon) and was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1970 and a National Historic Landmark in 1977. L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, did much of his writing at the hotel. Hotel del Coronado, Curio Collection by Hilton - 1500 Orange Avenue, Coronado, California. Details of Kawaiahaʻo Church from when the ship that I am on, the Ruby Princess, went to Hawaii back in April of this year. Kawaiahaʻo Church is a historic Congregational church located in Downtown Honolulu on the Hawaiian Island of Oʻahu. Kawaiahaʻo Church is known as the "Westminster Abbey of Hawaiʻi": site of royal weddings, inaugurations, installations, christenings, funerals and tomb. The stone building of Kawaiahaʻo Church was commissioned by the regency of Kaʻahumanu, during the reigns of Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III. Designed by Rev. Hiram Bingham in the New England style of the Hawaiian missionaries (Neoclassical Mediterranean Revival ), it was constructed between 1836 and 1842 of some 14,000 thousand-pound slabs of coral rock quarried from an offshore reef on the southern coast of Oʻahu. Hawaiian divers dove three to six metres below sea-level to chisel out each coral block with hand tools, and the blocks then were transported from the reef onto the shore.
