Dumb post comparing the designs of Mutafukaz posters
So, this probably barely qualifies as content since it’s just discussing something super trivial, but hell, I’m bored. Might as well.
The French Mutafukaz film poster looks like this, you’ve probably seen it like a thousand times:
Tumblr media
The English posters are also a variant of this design, but with the localised name, MFKZ, and sometimes slightly narrower or more elongated. It’s not a bad design. It puts the main character and villains centre stage, shows a glimpse of the ice-cream truck chase, which is a highlight of the film.
The only thing which I find kind of suspect is the inclusion of the terrified MIB goon, who appears for literally one scene in the opening of the film and never again. He’s not, like, an important character, why is he taking up screen-space alongside Bruce, Luna and the Lucha Ultima wrestlers? It’s such a strange inclusion, and I can’t imagine what impression it was supposed to give to a person who hadn’t seen the film.
But more importantly, it’s kind of... Flat? It looks very symmetrical, with the characters almost forming a sphere. Mr. K’s face is large and looms above everyone else, emphasizing his importance, but also STRONGLY contributing to the feeling of symmetry, with the hands clasped in front of his chin forming a kind of vertical line. There’s a crow and three palm trees to his left, a crow and three palm trees to his right... It’s strange for a movie as dynamic and chaotic as this to have such a... Clean, organized design?
Now, the Japanese poster by comparison:
Tumblr media
Now THIS is what I’m talking about. Lino is still at the forefront, but Vinz is now also occupying a significant amount of space, and in the absence of other characters, our eyes are drawn to Willy as well. We get a much clearer idea of the group dynamics, with Lino and Vinz being active and alert while Willy lies down in filth.
Somehow, this presentation feels much less noisy, since our eyes immediately identify only three characters, rather than a whole dozen. The asymmetry is nice, creating a kind of visual zig-zag between Lino, Vinz and Willy.
Most notably, their positions are actually contextualised. While before, all the characters were floating nonsensically (in some kind of sphere??) above a highway, here, they are clearly standing in an alley, and we get to see the amazing attention to detail. The background artists really did a fantastical job on the trash, graffiti and general atmosphere of Dark Meat City, and it’s nice to see it highlighted here.
But the “collage of characters and scenes” idea is not lost. You can see all the villains and supporting cast subtly, in the dark edges of the screen. The coolest thing is how these same dark edges are shaped to form the silhouette of a Macho, surrounding our main characters.
The slightly top-down perspective not only shows us the beautifully detailed environment, it also makes Lino and the gang seem puny and small, as if they’re facing off against a threat much, much greater than them (spoilers: they are. That’s what the Macho silhouette is for). The way Lino is gazing over his shoulder and off to the side also creates the feeling of paranoia, as if something is lurking just out of sight.
The only missed opportunity is that Angelino’s shadow could have had a single little tendril protruding from it - not too obvious, as to not spoil the reveal that he is also part Macho, but clear enough to be a cool little hint.
Overall, both posters are fine, they do their job of presenting the film at a glance... But, IMO, the Japanese poster is much more interesting compositionally, and has some clever subtext which the French one lacks.
I guess the last thing I should mention is that the composition of the French poster is remarkably similar to that of another Ankama Animations film:
Tumblr media
The symmetry, the running towards our POV, the radial pattern, a villain looming above... Even down to having the bright glow behind the characters. At least this one shows some cool environments, rather than a confused collage of every character in the film.
TL;DR: Graphic design is pretty cool, innit?

Ok, cool! I read that kinning is a spiritual part of identity, or how some people identify as non-humans and I was like ? cuz to me it’s just like I relate to this. Uhhh I guess I kin with Willy from Mutafukaz, Mako from Kill La Kill, and Mia from La La Land most consistently. My worst kin?... probs Christine or Phantom from Phantom of the Opera. Good musical but they problematic AF!. I wish I was kin w/ Clarice Starling. She’s cool, smart, and feminist? Dang. How I’m tryna be.
lol thats fun! i also just kin for funsies and it helps me center myself sometimes.
