the problem is i can't hate xander from buffy the vampire slayer because i'll always remember him as the only normal guy in a house full of special "chosen" people, fixing a broken window because somebody has to do it, and telling dawn that it's okay not to be special
#btvs#buffy the vampire slayer#xander harris#i'm sorry i know a lot of people really hate him#but i love that he's soooooo normal in the later seasons#and he's okay about that#willow's a witch and buffy's a slayer and giles is a watcher and dawn is a key#and he's just a guy who knows how to fix a window#and thank god for that

Watching The Normies react to “Potential” and I wish they had actually made Dawn the Potential. Especially since that girl ends up dying anyway. The comics have Dawn go on to be this super interdimensional being with powers related to being the key, but the show didn’t do that. After Season 5 Dawn’s character is kinda just there. Dawn was this entirely magical being who never got any powers or really had a chance to participate in fights and whatnot. Her being a Potential would’ve made so much sense as she was literally made from the blood of an activated and fully mature Slayer.
And even if they didn’t do this, I at least wish they’d had the message be different. When Dawn thought she had the power, she HAD the power. Xander could’ve gave his speech and then Dawn could’ve either replied right then with that, or figured it out 2 episodes later and told him. I’m pretty sure I’ve said this before but I love Dawn’s character and I wish they’d done more with her.
It also doesn’t make sense that it was that girl based on how the spell acted? If it was looking for that girl then I feel like it would’ve left the house. Instead, it sits in the middle of the house and only moves towards the door when Dawn goes there. And it’s to the point that it literally lifts Dawn up off the floor. It didn’t go through the door it looked like it went into Dawn and then subsided. And we didn’t hear the other girl get slammed up against the other side of the door? I liked this girl but I still think it would’ve been better if it was Dawn.
I also don’t like Xander’s speech all that much when I dig a little deeper. Willow wasn’t born a super powerful witch. She worked to that. Remember Willow in Seasons 2 and 3? I wouldn’t even say she had an aptitude for witchcraft. Willow was just smart and put her mind to becoming a witch cuz she was interested in it. To me, Xander CHOSE to be mediocre. And he proved many times throughout the show that he had the potential to be more. Remember in School Hard and many other times where he’s literally fist fighting vamps? He could’ve and should’ve been at least like Robin Wood by the time Season 7 came around. And I say at least because even though Robin was trained by a Watcher, Xander would’ve had Giles, Buffy, Willow, and Tara to act as collaborators and teachers. Not to mention all the hands on experience he got fighting demons and stopping apocalypses. Xander let his own insecurity control him and he found a way to make peace with that. He then taught Dawn to do that too. He basically said “ Because they’re all special, we have to be average”. The only boxes you’ll find yourself in are the ones others put you in, the ones you put yourself in, or the ones you let others put you in. And considering Xander’s abusive household, I wonder how much that played into it. Willow was extremely scholarly and she and Oz who helped a lot with her self worth issues(caused by her emotionally abusive parents). She then became a witch and that kinda dealt with any self worth issues. Xander didn’t have that. And you guys know I don’t like Xander all that much. 😭

“Times being what they are - Dark, and getting darker all the time.” 2012. Another one of those years where the world stood prophesied to end. It wouldn’t, despite the fractures in the spiderweb lines of those who fought against the darkness. Though most people didn’t know that. Couldn’t fathom time marching forward, again. For them, it was almost a foregone conclusion that the world would end.. Craters and hellmouths and illness and war opening up like pock-marks against the skin of every continent. Still, the heat of a California summer afternoon hit her naked shoulders much the same as it did back-when. The sun which continued to rise and sink, rise and sink, days and years passing in a blur. Not for him, though. Only for her. Those mistakes she’d made, those times she had gotten lost in spectacular ways, could all stay in old watcher diaries long forgotten. In pages quickly fading. As she hiked her bag’s strap higher on the slender slope of her shoulder, and headed away from the sun’s zenith, towards the catalyst town that had started it all. Sunnyhell. It felt like deja vu. In a sense, it was some sort of Groundhog’s Day, both that last fateful moment before the blinding flame replaying in her memory, and how she’d planned this next step meticulously. Over and over and over and over. In her waking thoughts, in dreams. “I’ve lived for sodding ever.” Only just over 30. Half of it living as the ‘chosen one’, standing between good and the forces of evil. Except… the lines got crossed. Somewhere, somehow. And back then she wasn’t ‘one’. Not really. It’s what had made her exceptional. She’d had family, friends. Now…. Willow, greyscale. Watchers and slayers, scattered. Xander, MIA, Giles in London regrouping with what little battlement they had left, Dawn in Rome. The dead, too many. Leaving the world broken, broken, broken as her. Not done, though. Never done. Never left alone. Never allowed to die. Just as Buffy. She was just… empty. Instead. Inside. Outside, a General, strong, resilient, apathetic. Today had to be the day to change all that.
The witch-seer Althenea had said so. Not to be confused with the slayer Athena Jamison-Smith. No, after Willow'd gone rogue (again) and Giles had grown distant (again- again), Althenea had coached Buffy on a lot - helped her while she'd done her best to march on, helped her train Violet as both a Slayer and witch who could stand in Buffy's absence. Told Buffy when the planets and energies would converge in order to deliver her alone, to split the flow of time. To save the world. Buffy just couldn’t be ‘Buffy’ to accomplish that.
That was fine with Buffy. Buffy hadn’t been “Buffy” in such a long time. “Times being what they are…. Hard, and getting harder all the time.”
#Is this anything#spuffy#buffy the vampire slayer#coming soon to a Sunnydale after dark or elysian fields near you#Except probably not lol#It would be INCREDIBLY angsty though lol#sigh

Entropy (Part 2)
Part 1 3
---
Willow isn't sure why everyone is so angry, honest!
She had spent months carefully preparing for a spell to raise her best friend back from the dead, gathering extremely hard-to-find ingredients and picking the perfect night to do the spell. So it had been the day Giles, who had become suspicious of her constant presence at the Magic Box as of late, was gone, big whoop!
Buffy was back, and just in time, too. They had been able to create the illusion of Buffy keeping up her Slayer act with the robot that had tried to kill Buffy when she'd come to town, but eventually a roving band of demons had discovered the truth. Willow had been mid-spell when the demons came, but she didn't stop until she had completed the spell, being dragged away after the jar she'd needed had shattered.
For a while, she thought she may have failed, but that was before Buffy showed up to save the day. Sure, she didn't really say anything as she attacked the demons trying to destroy Sunnydale and ran off after the last of them were dead, but she was alive! Anya had found Buffy cowering in the magic shop's basement and had the gall to lock the door in front of us!
Giles, in particular, had been the most ungrateful.
---
Giles entered the house he was so very fond of quietly, the front door closing with a click as the talking in the kitchen stopped. It's not long before an excited and smiling Willow bounds the corner, running over and hugging Giles tight.
"Oh, Giles, did you hear? I brought Buffy back!" She beams at the news, missing how his smile wasn't reaching his eyes. "S-She's not here, but you're welcome to wait! We have pizza and everything, and I'm sure there's some tea in here somewhere."
"Willow." The witch pulls back from her hug at the tone of his voice, finally recognizing that he wasn't smiling.
"Is something wrong?" The Watcher took a small step back when Willow's arms fell to her side, looking at Willow as if she was a stranger he'd never met before. "Giles?"
"You stupid, foolish girl." There is an iron edge to every word as her eyes go wide, steely blue eyes boring into her own. "Do you have any idea what you've done?"
"Excuse me?!" Willow is vaguely aware of Xander and Tara moving to join the conversation, and is glad Dawn was out so she wasn't here for all of this. "I brought Buffy back from the dead, you should be happy!"
"You did so by meddling with forces that I'm not even thick enough to deal with." Ethan seemed to emerge from behind Giles from thin air, the warlock serious for the first time any of them could remember. "Knew someone was stealing from my stocks."
"Borrowing to do something amazing." Willow scoffed, crossing her arms with a glare. "You should be ecstatic that she's back, I brought Buffy back into this world."
"Having Buffy back in this world makes me feel indescribably wonderful, but I wouldn't congratulate you if you jumped off a cliff and happened to survive." The Watcher was failing to keep his voice level, not feeling one iota of guilt as he climbed from shouting to yelling. Xander and Tara nervously shared a glance as Ethan moved rooms, having grabbed Giles' buzzing phone during his rant.
"That's not what I did, Giles."
"You were lucky." He took a step forward as he held Willow's gaze, and to her credit, the witch did not back down.
"I was amazing, and how do you even know? You weren't even here!"
"That magics you channeled are more ferocious and primal than anything you can hope to understand, and you are lucky to be alive, you rank, arrogant amateur!"
"I'm a very powerful witch, and maybe it's not such a good idea to piss me off!" Willow shouted, the air in the room almost crackling as she pointed a finger at the Watcher. "You don't get to come here and lecture me, not when I did the impossible. I don't want to fight, so maybe you and your warlock should leave and cool off." Giles just stared at her before shaking his head.
"This is not over, mark my words, Rosenburg." Willow flinched at the use of her last name and watched a man she considered to be a father figure stalk out of the house without another word, slamming the door behind him.
---
Now Angel was here, vamped out and very pissed judging by how yellow his eyes were.
"We need to have a talk."
"Since when did you roll into town Deadboy?" Xander was the first to speak after Ethan and Giles trailed in after the vampire, hanging back to allow the vampire to take center stage. "Because none of us called you."
"You didn't have to." Angel snarled, crossing his arms as the trio across from him huddled a little closer together in discomfort. "Did any of you even notice Dawn had left town?"
"W-What?" Tara looked at the floor to avoid Angel's gaze, clearly guilty at the news. "She told me s-she was at a friend's house, and I-I wanted to spare her from seeing the ritual..."
"You didn't once think to check in on her?" Angel was unfamiliar with the woman who wouldn't look up, clearly disappointed.
"Tara was helping me with the spell." Willow swallowed, his amber eyes snapping over to focus on her. "We had no idea she was gone, honest!"
"You're very lucky she arrived unharmed, otherwise I would be a lot angrier." Angel scowled, taking in a deep breath before exhaling with a low growl. "I thought you were all supposed to be better than this, that's what I kept hearing when I was in town."
"I don't understand why you're all so angry, I brought Buffy back to us, probably saving her from some sort of hell dimension!" Willow huffed.
"You don't know that." The vampire sounded weary now, watching the witch slowly step away from him to sit on the couch, Tara and Xander flanking either side as they joined her.
They didn't want to be alone with Angel so close by.
"Buffy is alive; you should just be happy." This is the first time Willow shows the mourning friend who had been buried under the frenzied need to fix everything, the redhead hugging herself with a pitiful expression. "I couldn't lose my friend."
"It wasn't your choice to make." The words are painful for all to hear, but they had to be said.
"Is she okay?" Xander looked up from his hands, unsure of what else to say.
"I don't know, but Spike will take care of her."
"Spike is back?!" Willow jumped to her feet as Xander stared in shock. "When did he get back? W-Where has he been?"
"He's been in L.A." Angel finally shifted his face back to its human visage, but he was still scowling as Willow shrank back a little. "We'll both be staying for a little while, which brings me to another part of why I'm here."
"Which is?" Willow eyed him nervously, the vampire muttering something before running his hand through his hair.
"I know you and Tara live here, but Spike, Dawn, and Buffy need a place they both find safe. I'm not asking you to leave permanently, but they need their space and their home." Willow looked a bit aghast at the request but stayed quiet when Tara took her hand with a light squeeze.
"They can crash with me. It'll be a squeeze, but we can manage." Xander shrugged, unsurprised that the conversation had turned to the topic. "A buddy of mine is out of town for the next couple of months, and with Anya and I not on speaking terms right now, su case is me casa for now."
"Good, good." Angel glanced back at Giles and Ethan before turning back to the Scoobies. "Take the next day or two, just call me when you're done."
"Angel..." Willow bit her lip before meeting his gaze full-on. "Do you think I messed up? Bringing Buffy back?" Angel doesn't reply for a long time, just holding the witch's gaze without blinking.
"We'll have to see, that's for Buffy to decide."
---
Spike is talking.
It's the first thing Buffy registers when she slowly begins to wake up, feeling refreshed at being able to actually sleep. She wasn't on the couch, it seemed, the familiar sheets of Giles' bed meeting her gaze when she opened her eyes. The last thing she remembered was sitting on the couch with Spike, said vampire currently curled up on the far side of the bed with his legs being hugged to his chest. Buffy wants to say something, but pauses when she realizes those normally bright eyes are glossed over and staring at nothing in particular.
"William doesn't deserve to be so close, doesn't deserve to touch her hair like the sun, doesn't deserve to hold her. Hands are too bloody, she needs clean hands, not the hands of a monster. But she touched us, touched our dirty face, didn't throw us down even though we are beneath her, smiled and held us." Spike stopped muttering long enough to tug at his hair, slightly rocking back and forth as Buffy watched in silence. "Let the girl sleep, let her dream of the sun, not of the dirt and the earth and grass, deserves better-"
"Spike?" Blue eyes flicker over, and her heart aches at the fear swirling within them.
She doesn't like that look.
"Did I wake the girl?" He's barely speaking above a whisper as he watches her slowly sit up. "She should rest."
"Are you okay?" The vampire doesn't move when she shuffles closer, those blue eyes just following her every move. When she's stopped moving he slowly reaches out with one hand to cup the side of her face, thumb resting below her right eye.
"You deserve the world, something better." His voice wavers as he soaks in her natural body heat, something he never thought he'd feel again. "Maybe I can be part of that, to see the sunshine smile brighter than creation, to hold her hands that can tear the earth asunder."
"Spike..." Buffy wants nothing more than to melt into his arms, to kiss away the fear and tears contained in those eyes she'd spent days memorizing. Yet something is holding her back, and she wonders if it has to do with why there was something else in those eyes she'd never seen before. "Why did you leave?"
"To honor you." The vampire whispers his response as he moves, shifting onto his knees so he can give her his full attention. "Give you and Dawn what you deserve, to be a man, a better man...but Angel should have warned me. He makes a show of forgetting, but it's here, in me...all the time....the Spark."
The world fell away as Buffy stared at the man before her.
"Your soul." Tears began to fall as Buffy looked at Spike in almost a daze, everything clicking as she looked at that new light in his eyes, where it had only been darkness before.
"A bit worse from lack of use," Spike's lips twitched in a sad smile, and he used the one hand still cradling her face to wipe away as many tears as he could. He pulls away when she moves to rest her hand over his, hugging himself instead. "I wasn't ready to come back, everyone i-is still in 'ere, talking...everything I did, everything I-" Neither has to ask what else he wants to say, so the vampire stares resolutely at the bed, her quiet sniffles joining the chorus of voices that murmured in the background of his mind. He's not expecting Buffy to wrap her arms around him, burying her face into his shoulder as she cried, though for what he could not answer, so he slips his arms free to hold her close. After what felt like an eternity, she drew back, emerald eyes staring into turquoise before she captured his lips in a kiss, pouring every bit of the love she felt for him into it. She can feel Spike tense for a moment before surrendering himself completely, finally able to understand what she was giving him with so much clarity it could have stolen his breath away if he was human. Neither of them want to stop, Buffy eventually drawing back to give Spike a smile as she keeps close in his arms.
"You're going to stay, right?"
Please say yes
"Till the end of the world."
I'll always say yes

__________________________ headcanons!
- still has the cross necklace that angel gave her, however she no longer wears it ( keeps it in a little sealed baggy for safe keeping ). before leaving sunnydale, she got herself another one along with a ring that bears a cross too ( as an added measure when fighting vampires ). - after “bad eggs”; buffy no longer will eat eggs – scrambled, fried, as an omelet, etc etc, — she also has an aversion to scorpions as well. ( just eggs by their lonesome where she has to visibly see them, otherwise? she’s fine. ) the eggs make her physically sick and she will stomp the hell out of any scorpion, should she encounter it. ( alas that leaves her out of ever having pho. ) - after the incident with having to work at the Doublemeat Palace, buffy also no longer will eat hamburgers, cheeseburgers or even plant based impossible burgers. all of it ( just like eggs ! ) makes her physically sick. ( she can eat sausage patties and vegetables on their own. ) - buffy sold the house six months after joyce passed away in 2001, for a while she lived in the back room at the magic shop before getting an apartment with dawn and willow near UC Sunnydale. ( the potential slayers were trained in the back room of the magic shop, some would sleep there on the training mats as well until giles had the storage space above the magic shop refurbished into a living space for the remaining potential slayers to call home. ) - buffy still has nightmares about what happened with Adam & The Initiative ( along with her trauma from having to crawl out of her own grave ). - remember when angel gave buffy the claddagh ring? well, she gave it back after that visit to los angeles because they weren’t together anymore & she CLAIMED to not want any further past attachments. well, she was hiding a secret from him. buffy has a claddagh ring tattoo on her upper back, on the left side with a crack in the heart. - buffy still has trauma from having to crawl out of her coffin, she no longer sleeps under blankets or with the door closed as a result of it. as a matter of fact, for many years after coming back ? she’s attended group meetings at the nearest church for those who have ptsd from traumatic events in their life. - giles opened up a second magic box in downtown los angeles months after the final battle. willow some of the new slayers work there, as does buffy who is part time security. willow and dawn also teach magic classes to witches who show actual potential with mentoring from giles. - willow & giles are also in the long haul hunt to locate & train descendants of the Svear priestesses in order to reform the powerful cult and hope to make them allies. - as of 2018, buffy has been taking several life skills classes – whether it’s online through skill share or in person at the local high school. ( she did consider going back to college but since sunnydale was swallowed into a crater, she’d never be able to get her transcripts. )
- added February 8th 2023 - With Giles restarting the Watcher's Council, and there being a smaller ( but slowly growing in allies / local assistance ) on Oahu? slayers will begin to get a daily allowance/per diem when the funding is large enough. the council will also be paying for plane tickets, rental vehicles, hospital bills, room/board and clothing *again* once the funding is big enough. ( on oahu they're trying to renovate a home big enough to potentially house a few slayers who decide to visit or stay, probably put bunk beds in each room depending. )
— buffy wasn't ever really IN LOVE with riley, there was chemistry yes but the connection wasn't the same. the events with The Initiative also made her less and less inclined to want to be intimate / vulnerable with him so when they broke up? she was far from upset, more indifferent about it. — never won fiesta queen ( which is similar to may queen at Sunnydale high ) — spike was the last victim to the scythe while the Slayers were down in the depths, fighting off the hellmouth legion. ( to eradicate any remaining evil – chemical bombs had been set off as they were driving out of town to get to safety. so, her sunnydale is an irradiated zone and sealed off by the government. the crater still happened. ) — after angel left sunnydale & buffy saw him / came to los angeles that one time ? ( where he became human because of that demon & time got reversed so he could stop it. ) their connection hasn't been the same since, even less so after he helped faith out ( and they fought about it ). she no longer has any romantic feelings / a deep seeded connection to him, however she doesn't hate him either. she's grown a lot in their time apart, learned to love herself and realized that wishing she could've changed the past was holding her back. – she is a Kemetism practitioner, specifically Kemetic Orthodoxy. ( link one, link two. )
added November 2nd 2022: buffy loves foreign films. this stems from that one time where her, will and xander were watching that old hindi/Bollywood movie ( episode reference - reptile boy ). much to the annoyance of dawn, buffy will also change the language ( dubbing it ) of any movie they own on DVD ( made in english first ) if she can. or she mutes the movie and changes the subtitles to another language.
added November 3rd 2022: since about her brief stint in college, buffy takes vitamins. women's dailies, d3, tumeric and ginger, b12, vitamin a, calcium, and iron. despite the fact that a slayer's genetics are different than others ( her healing fast after angel fed from her in graduation part i ), she's not as young as she used to be and it's still important to maintain her best physical condition.
( added December 16th 2022 ): After Joyce passed away, Buffy definitely withdrew / became a little more hesitant when hugging ANYONE. Even her friends. It wasn't something any of them did, and they know that ... it was just - there's a hole that was left after losing her mom and she was someone that Buffy could always run to for comfort. And then one day, she couldn’t anymore. So, it's been a challenge for her.
( added December 19th 2022 ): buffy enjoys spicy asian food. specifically korean, thai, and vietnamese food. if something is not spicy enough for her, she adds two teaspoons of thai chili oil.
— THESE ARE GONNA BE SOFT HEADCANONS. Because hard days / nights / weeks happen & she who slays needs to find comfort in the three bedroom / three bathroom apartment she shares with Dawn & Willow. —
— Buffy has a collection of bath bombs, bath salts, various essential oils, & face masks she keeps on a shelf in a basket in her bathroom. — There's also a diffuser in her bedroom along with diffuser sticks. Seated on the bureau / chest of dresser drawers in the corner. — her foot massager tub is kept under the sink, or sometimes on a little stool in the bathroom. she will use mainly Epsom salt or sometimes bath salts, depends on her mood. – Speaking of mood ! Buffy has another shelf in the bathroom that houses candles or an incense burner, which she uses also depends on her mood. – Several playlists are used for when she's needing to calm down after having a hard day / night. — Journaling always happens for about an hour or two post feel better bath, usually with a cup of chai tea that Willow will make for her. — Buffy also meditates / still does Tai Chi in the very early mornings ( in her bedroom or in the living room with incense burning — in the living room if Dawn & Willow aren't home but neither girl minds truthfully ).
added, september 4th: Buffy will often go walking after a really bad fight ( vs. the supernatural ) or if she can't sleep while it's raining out. She tends to get looked at a little funny because she'll wear rain boots to keep her feet dry, but still get soaked in the process. There's been a few times where she's had cuts and bruises forming or fully visible and people stop her to ask if she's okay. Her response? "I'm breathing, this will all heal soon." And keeps walking.
added, september 5th: the reformed Watchers Council has two headquarters now. One in Los Angeles which is the chapter that Giles is in charge of and in one Hawaii, specifically on the island of Oahu. Every three to four months, Giles leaves LA for a couple of weeks to discuss in person with the head of the council ( currently unnamed ) there what paranormal occurrences are happening. Giles has mentioned a few times before that they're also looking to add two more new council chapters. One in Europe and one in Russia. Buffy's eyeglasses - They're not like regular eyeglasses, although in appearance they certainly seem to be. They're actually Schufftein glasses ( hellboy reference! ), making it easier for her to see the true form of things that are otherwise hidden to the naked eye / mere mortals. faeries, wesen ( when woged ), hellhounds, Shadowhunters ( when using the glamor rune ). ( added fact: Buffy does not wear the glasses 24/7, nor are they always with her when she's out and about. Due to being a rare and highly valued item, they're protected by magic and will only appear to her should she need them. If stolen ? They will immediately return to her or to where they're hidden. )

The Chip:
“Have you gone insane?” Xander bellowed.
“I don’t like it anymore than you do, Xander,” Buffy replied firmly, tiredly, “but if those Knights of Whatever kidnap Dawn, I need him to be able to fight them.”
“What ‘Knights’?” Danny, having been watching the conversation devolve into an argument, spoke up mildly.
“Buncha Medieval Times rejects,” Spike snorted, “comin’ ‘round ta make sure Her Bitchiness don’t get the Key…by destroyin’ said Key. Humans, as ya might’ve gathered,” he knocked his knuckles against his own skull, “with this blasted chip in me—”
“Wait, what ‘chip’?”
“Was captured by a buncha government patsies, thought they could do a better job than the Slayer an’ her merry band of misfits when it came ta the bumps in the night. They implanted a chip in my brain, makes it ta where I can’t say boo ta a human or else I’ll get a nasty headache. Had ta throw myself on the Slayer’s mercy ta survive, ‘cause I can’t feed like this.”
“They were trying to build a demon army,” Willow added somewhat angrily, “real Nazi types when it came to nonhumans. Even you, Your Majesty, would’ve been declared ‘hostile’ and they would’ve tried to slay you if they couldn’t capture you for Goddess knows what experiments.”
“Oh, those types. Yeah, we had a group like that in my world,” Danny nodded, “except with ghosts. Even passed an Anti-Ecto Act declaring all ghosts non-sentient and malicious. I don’t think I need to point out the flaw there.”
“How did you handle—”
“First real act as King,” Danny looked distinctly uncomfortable, “went straight to the President himself and proved I was sentient and then threatened to bar any new ghost from the Realms and, if that didn’t work, Total War. He struck down the laws and disbanded the GIW—the Ghost Investigation Ward—claimed he had no clue as to how they got started. The GIW was working off a lot of my parents’ old research, back when everyone thought all the ghosts in our town were causing problems just because.”
He paused, “But back to Spike; Buffy wants this chip removed?”
“We can’t trust him!” Xander declared, “That chip is—”
“A liability,” Buffy cut him off.
“A monstrosity!” Willow said at the same time, “If he’s that dangerous, they should’ve just staked him, Xander! He can’t even defend himself right now! What if the Initiative comes back for him? Other demons like Clem or even someone like Anya and Buffy? Witches? Dawn? Where will they draw the line on what’s human and what’s not?”
“Willow is correct,” Giles agreed, though he looked sour about doing so, “about the Initiative hunting other supernaturals—”
“Buffy, Anya, and Dawn are human,” Xander argued, “so are—”
“Am I really?” Buffy snorted, “Spike’s chip doesn’t work on me, Xander; am I human? Dawn’s human now but she was originally mystical goop! Who’s to say Spike couldn’t hurt her without the chip firing—”
“I’d never, not the Nibblet,” Spike assured.
“We know, Spike,” Dawn spoke up, “but Buffy and Willow are right; if the Initiative learns about me…the Knights already want me dead…”
The teen shivered.
“I used to be a demon, Xander,” Anya reminded him sharply, “I’m human now, but I wasn’t. What if they come and take me for experiments? Because I wasn’t always human. Besides, a vampire of Spike’s rank should never be leashed. Willow’s right. You either kill them or not; it’s cruel to do anything else.”
“Enough!” Danny called them to order, before saying softly, “Dawn, do you trust Spike not go on a spree if he gets—de-chipped?”
“Yeah. He’s in love with Buffy,” Dawn said knowingly, “he’s not gonna make her hate him! And…he’s always been good to me.”
“I trust him,” Tara spoke up, blushing at the attention of everyone, “he’s always been nice to me…and Buffy’s right, with the Knights and the Initiative—”
“I trust him not to mess with the good thing he has going here,” Anya said firmly, nodding.
“Okay, that’s three for,” Danny nodded, “Giles?”
The Watcher mulled it over before sighing, “I agree we need him against the Knights and with that chip—I defer to my Slayer.”
“Three for, one neutral.”
“I’m for,” Willow said, “if only so Buffy can stake him with a clear conscience if he does mess up.”
“I’m against—he’ll kill us all,” Xander grumped.
Buffy was thoughtful before turning to the vampire in question, “If I say yes, there’ll be rules, got it? Only animal blood unless you’re injured and if you leave Sunnydale without my permission—”
“Got it, Slayer. On parole, me.”
“Exactly,” Buffy nodded, “we’ll write out a proper list of rules later—we can even haggle some—but as long as you behave…we’ll get the chip out and not stake you where you stand.”
Danny clapped, “There you have it, folks; the vampire gets de-chipped! I’ll talk to Frostbite—I think he has a brain surgeon on call—if not then we’ll find someone.”
Wished Away 8:
“Mom, Dad, help,” Dean said, holding a baby out.
A whirlwind of activity followed.
“He is Nephilim,” Castiel declared, having inspected the boy, “though I cannot tell his true parentage. It is being…hidden from me.”
The pediatricians took over as soon as the angel stepped back.
“Nephilim,” Danny said slowly, rubbing his chin thoughtfully, “isn’t that half-angel or something?”
“Precisely,” Castiel said just as slowly, measuring his words like they were his last rations, “They are…it is Forbidden for angels to lay with mortals. The creation of Nephilim is even more taboo as the first, the original, were monsters more often than not. It is an intentional act, to create Nephilim; the angelic parent must give a portion of their own Grace to the child during conception.”
“So they purposely knocked someone up then ding-dong ditched the kid,” Dean growled.
“Perhaps they heard that we are romantically involved, Dean,” Castiel offered, “and hoped we would take in the child as our own.”
“Well, of course we are,” Dean huffed, rolling his eyes at his angel who shook his head fondly, “I’ve already picked out a name too. A good human name.”
“Oh?”
“Jack, after Grandpa Jack. Unless, you have a name?”
“Perhaps…James, after James Novak?”
“Hmm…Jack James…James Jack…JJ…no, definitely Jack James. I like it, Cas.”
“Well, little Jack is healthy as far as we can tell,” Doctor Peterson joined the little huddle, “every scan we can perform came up normal, perfectly within range for his age group.”
Both Dean and Castiel visibly relaxed.
“We’ll get you set up,” Sam promised her son and might-as-well-be son-in-law.
A servant brought David’s old wrap and Sam showed Dean and Castiel how to wind it around their bodies to carry little Jack close to their hearts.
“Does the heart even beat?” Danny asked Castiel with interest, referring to his Vessel.
“Yes, I have kept all systems functioning as intended,” Castiel confirmed.
“Good. Because babies this young are used to heartbeats,” Danny explained as Sam worked with Dean, “they just spent nine months with their mom’s in their ears.”
“I see,” Castiel nodded, “well, Dean has assured me that I have a perfectly human sounding heartbeat.”
“What’s the likelihood that his mom was the human?” Danny asked next.
“Oh, quite likely…angels with female vessels most often shutdown the reproductive system. It would also be quite hard to hide the evidence of the gestating Nephilim. His mother likely died in childbirth; her body finally unable to handle his Angelic self.”
Danny winced; that would be a horrid way to die and he fried like a French fry.
Within hours, little Jack was all ready to go home.
Over the next few days, a room in the Bunker became a nursery and supplies loaded in.

I'm trying to think of interesting Buffy couples who could have a Slayer child (aside from Willow, since that's been done twice already), since I feel at this point Disney might try this story again.
And, to be honest, I'm probably thinking couples where one-half of them is a demon or something, and that might affect their child who ends up a Slayer to some interesting results.
The obvious being Buffy herself, of course, if she ended up with Angel or Spike and they somehow had a kid. But I also feel like this would never happen for a few reasons. One, because I feel the Bangel vs. Spuffy debate will never be settled, and also because I think writers would think Buffy having a Slayer daughter--and almost passing it on in a sense--would be too cliché, and I agree.
I think my top pick is honestly Xander and Anya, since Anya is a vengeance demon. In some sort of AU, of course.
But other ideas are:
Doyle and Cordelia, who would be the same as Xander and Anya, pretty much, but it could work
Giles and Jenny in a really serious AU there: the new Slayer being the daughter of witch Jenny, of course.
They could potentially do something with Xander and Dawn's daughter from the comics, Joyce, being a Slayer (her being the Key's daughter and a Slayer). This is actually what I thought "In Every Generation" was going to be about at first, when I read that Buffy's niece was going to be a Slayer, but then this was not it.
Oz and Bay's daughter, perhaps. (This girl then maybe being a Slayer and werewolf.) But as most people haven't read the comics to know Bayarmaa or this ship, I doubt they'd do this.
I guess they could always potentially pair Angel and Spike with other people who aren't Buffy, like Cordy or Nina (THAT could be interesting for this) for Angel or Devon (someone from the comics) or Dru for Spike (so it wouldn't be the cliché Buffy having a daughter and she just happens to be a Slayer), but I don't know about this. Vampires aren't supposed to even be able to have children, and the time it's come up in the series (like with Connor), it's taken some tweaking and a prophecy was involved, so meh. And there would be ship wars, of course. Though there would be with a lot of these ideas. LOL
I feel like Andrew and Clive could be interesting (or Andrew and anyone he might date. If we maybe want to do Andrew and Jonathan in an AU or something, that could also work). I think Clive was the guy he likes in the comics, that Google is telling me is a warlock. I honestly forgot about that. I was actually thinking this because Andrew is kind of a genius inventor. And maybe before any daughter he has is Called, she's already inventing stuff and can use that to her advantage.
Wesley and Illyria? Because of her crazy, cool god powers? And having someone who was a Watcher actually have a Slayer as a daughter could be hella interesting (same thing with the Giles and Jenny AU idea).
Connor and someone? Gwen, maybe? If those two were to ever get back together? (They dated for a bit in the comics.) Gwen paired with someone herself, even if it's not Connor. LOL
Uhh... I think this is everyone I can think of. I don't think I'm forgetting any interesting characters, or couple possibilities that could lead to a cool Slayer possibility, but one might have slipped my mind. -shrugs-
Edit: Oh, wait. I may contradict myself and say maybe having Melaka Fray have a daughter who's a Slayer. Or Erin Fray. Or better yet: Harth Fray, who was Melaka Fray's twin brother, who ended up with her Slayer memories and prophetic dreams--and maybe even the Slayer leadership skills--and was then turned into a vampire. Just because I need to see more of Haddyn (the futuristic world that the three of them are from), dangit!
Or maybe Cordy and Groo or some AU where Cordy and Xander got back together after she was Vision Girl and they had a daughter?
#buffy the vampire slayer#angel the series#random thought. since we already have frankie and thessaly. and i just get the sense it's not going to stop there. but i might be wrong#i just realized i didn't mention faith or any other slayer (aside from buffy) in this. but i also feel it would be cliche if they had#daughters who were slayers. so no point i guess. -shrugs-#anyway i should probably mention that i really don't want angel or spike paired with anyone other than the buffster#but i was trying to keep my shipping biases out of this whole list. lol#also in my one section i said cordy or nina for angel. but i guess it could even be darla or dru. we could get really crazy in some au. lol#also now i'm thinking it could be cool if billy had a daughter who was a slayer. but that'll never happen since the general public has no#idea who he is#i also just thought of warren/amy. those two horrible people having a daughter who's a slayer and her choosing to be good would make a#good story. but i'm too nice to do that to a poor child through having such horrible parents even in fiction

Masterlist & Chapter 1
Chapter 3
Cleveland, Ohio
Spike and Andrew arrived in Cleveland shortly before sunup, much to Spike's relief. Andrew was a bit of an erratic driver and if Spike wasn't already dead, he might have bothered to fear for his life. He had never been to Cleveland before. Never had a reason to. Sure there was a hellmouth, but why would anyone choose it over California? Ohio was a flyover state for a reason. What'd they even have in Ohio? Corn?
Andrew parked the car outside of what looked to be an abandoned warehouse in the industrial district on the outskirts of the city. The windows were all dark and Spike couldn't hear or see a soul around. There was a faint scent of iron in the air that smelled almost like blood, but Spike could tell it was actually emanating from the slowly corroding metal walls of the warehouse. Unlike Spike, the building wasn't timeless. He raised an eyebrow at Andrew, but the eccentric Watcher-in-training was already jumping out of the car. Spike followed after him, only hesitating for a moment. Could barely be called hesitation really. Just... taking a breath. That he didn't really need. Bugger it. It's not like Andrew noticed.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were trying to off me," Spike commented as he looked over at the group of motionless cranes dangling equipment that likely violated several OSHA regulations.
Andrew laughed with a grating kind of chortle that for a second brought Spike back to a different time. At Buffy's house, back when they were still at war with The First. He waved off the memory. No point in getting all sentimental. What's done is done and over.
"No silly," Andrew replied. "This is where Willow said to meet."
"Nice digs. Perfect spot for a demon."
Andrew rolled his eyes at the quip and opened the rusting metal door, motioning for Spike to enter. Spike eyed the door, surprised it hadn't crashed down off its tracks.
"Alright then," Spike said as he walked into the darkness. No point in arguing.
Inside, the warehouse was completely empty except for the heavy coating of dirt covering the spalling concrete floor...and a strange rectangular pool of what looked like liquid silver situated at its center. Andrew's footsteps echoed behind him in the cavernous space as Spike moved to get a better look at the curious centerpiece. Despite the lack of light, the silver pool seemed to shimmer and emitted a faint glow. Probably radiation. Spike took a couple of steps back from the man-sized pool.
"Now hold up a minute," he said, turning on Andrew. "Pretty sure the mercury baths went out of style." He held a finger up for emphasis. "And, if memory serves, Xander was the one with the syphilis problem."
Andrew ignored him and walked to the edge of the pool. "It's a portal. You coming or are you just gonna stand there?"
With that, Andrew stepped off the ledge and disappeared beneath the surface of silver. Spike stared after him.
"Right, quick trip to hell. Was getting bored anyway. Well, if that git can do it," Spike muttered.
He ran after him and leapt into the pool. For some reason he had expected it to burn, like molten lava. Instead, he felt absolutely nothing, not even as his head sunk under the waves. And then everything was unnaturally bright.
Spike winced away before realizing it wasn't the sun, just orbs of floating white light scattered throughout the sizable room. He recognized the type. This was a magic shop. A multi-dimensional magic shop.
The shop was quiet despite its size and selection. Spike recognized more than a few rare items that would fetch quite the price on the black market... if one was into that sort of thing. The shelves were fully stocked with spell books, grimoires, various herbs, crystals, and other magical curios. It made the old Sunnydale magic shop look like the kiddie leagues.
Sitting at a long oval table in the center of the room was Willow, dressed in clothes that looked a day old with a cold cup of coffee sitting next to her. The red-headed witch was surrounded by books scattered around her on both the table and the floor. She didn't even look up at their arrival. It seemed that - apart from Spike and Andrew - she was the only one in the shop.
"Hey Willow," Andrew said, giving her a little wave. "I got Spike."
Willow looked up from a particularly thick tome covered in a language Spike didn't recognize. She gave a small smile that did nothing to hide the worry on her face or the exhaustion in her eyes.
"Hey guys," she said. "Good to have you on the team."
"Any luck so far?" Andrew asked.
Willow shook her head. "Nothing. There's nothing about mass memory loss in slayers. Of course, there have never been multiple slayers before so. You know, we're back in uncharted territory."
Spike cut in hesitantly, "And Buffy?"
He thought he caught an odd expression cross Willow's face, but it had been a while since he'd seen her. Maybe it was normal.
"I still haven't been able to reach her," Willow replied. "I just got here last night. Called in a favor to a friend and got us a lease on this magic shop 'til we figure out what's going on. I'm hoping Giles will know more."
"Well we should go check on her then!" Spike said, throwing up a hand. "Slayer wandering around out of her head? It's a death sentence."
Willow pursed her lips and glanced over at Andrew uneasily. "We can't. Or...well we're not sure we should. It's not just memory loss."
She paused and Spike began to get more and more agitated. There was something they hadn't been telling him. Something bad.
"During the blackouts," Willow continued, "you know, the times they can't remember? Well, we think that there's someone...else. Someone else is controlling their actions, it's almost like they're possessed. But whatever is doing it-"
"It's a scary good copy," Andrew blurted out.
Willow nodded. "It knows about their lives, how they act, their friends. It even goes on doing the regular day-to-day slayage duties. But we've noticed some things are just a bit...off."
"What do you mean, off?" Spike pressed.
"Well...one of 'em did try killing Angel a few days back," Andrew replied. "They had been working together temporarily and apparently she just snapped one day."
"Well I don't see the problem there," Spike said with a grin.
"Another one didn't recognize her parents when they came for a visit," Willow added. "She hadn't seen them since becoming a slayer and just nothing. Freaked them right out. But she remembered everyone else, insisted they weren't her family though."
"Okay, yeah, a bit odd," Spike conceded.
"And then, two days ago, Giles was training with one of the London slayers when her fighting style switched from streetfighter novice to jujitsu master in the span of a minute." Willow sighed. "And that's when I did a revealing spell. There were was something in her that wasn't her. We don't even know when we're talking with the real person...or the other. Whatever it is."
"And that's why you haven't contacted Buffy," Spike stated.
Willow nodded. "We don't want to spook...it."
"Yeah who knows, it could run off to Timbuktu with Buffy's body," Andrew agreed with a vigorous nod.
"Andrew, could you get me some cannis root from the back storage?" Willow asked him. "I need to do a translation spell."
"Sure, of course!" Andrew replied as he scampered off behind the rows of shelves.
Spike pulled out a chair and took a seat next to Willow at the table without speaking.
"It's good to see you, Spike," Willow said without smiling. "I just wish you would've told us before disaster struck again."
"Yeah." He nodded slowly. "Well, being back in the land of the living has been one should've after another I suppose." He fumbled the pack of cigarettes from his pocket and lit one up with a flick from his lighter. "Do you think-"
"I don't know if she'll be glad to see you," Willow said, answering the unspoken question. "I don't know."
"Right."
Spike sighed as he exhaled a cloud of smoke. Andrew returned with a large jar of what looked like...well, roots. Willow took it from him and set the jar aside without opening it. It seemed the cannis root had just been a task to keep Andrew busy. Spike wasn't surprised. Andrew took a seat at the table and began perusing through some of the scattered books. Spike watched as the two continued their research. It wasn't really his forte.
What felt like hours later - though he knew it had only been minutes - Spike heard the sound of footsteps behind him. Familiar tread. Instant irritation. Bollocks.
"No. Oh, no. No, no, no, no. No way. What the hell is he doing here?" Xander exclaimed as he squinted in the light.

Level One: The Magic Box
Buffy found herself waking up with her head in a book sitting on a chair at a table and as she soon discovered after pulling her head up out of the book and sitting up straight she quickly realized she was back at the magic box in Sunnydale, a place long destroy during the big battle against the first, leaving the slayer well and truly confused as to how she had got to a place that no longer existed. “Buffy this is a whole other level of jeepers!” Willow stated as she walked over from the magic box’s shop counter, as Buffy stood up to face her bewitching friend. “You can say that again,” Buffy replied as she looked around the magic box, a play which to use to be head of operations for her and her friends, in a town she had once called home. “Am I dead again?” “Not unless I am dead too which I really hope is not the case.” Willow answered her friend, only for them both to be shocked by Giles walking into the shop via the front door. “What the bloody hell is going on? The whole of Sunnydale is back in fact it is as if nothing ever happened to it barring the complete and utter emptiness of humans.” Giles stated as he walked over to the slayer and the witch. “I woke up on the couch in my old apartment which is by far the most peculiar thing that has happened to me in recent years and I am including my brief spell as a child after being resurrected by Angel.” “Clearly some kind of spell has been cast,” Willow told them both, only for both Giles and Buffy to look at her with suspicion and blame in their eyes. “Not me, I think I would remember casting a spell to bring the whole of Sunnydale back into existence.” “Well I certainly have not been casting spells, I leave that stuff to you!” Buffy replied to the redheaded witch. “I guess we hit the books,” Giles suggested as he took in the scenery of the shop he had once owned. “Which from a second’s observation seem to be all there.” “We cannot be the only ones here, can we?” Buffy wondered, just before two male vampires walked in the front door in full vampire face mode. “I meant non vampire companions.” “It really is like being home!” Willow declared as Buffy charged towards the two vampires in front of them.
Elsewhere in the Magic Box, Xander found himself sitting on a swivel chair within the training room dazed and confused to how he got there as he slowly stood up from his chair and took in the room once more, startled for it to look exactly like it once did and even more confused that he was back in a place long destroyed. “Crikey! As flashbacks go this is something else!” Xander stated, as Dawn walked in from the back door which lead to alleyway behind the Magic Box, looking equally as confused as her partner. “I was just putting Joyce to bed and then suddenly I was in the alleyway.” Dawn told Xander. “This is the Magic Box…Xander how is this the Magic Box?” “Your guess is as good as mine Dawnie, but I’d take a bet on something magical gone awry.” Xander replied as he walked over to the woman he loved, kissed her on the cheek and hugged her. “Let us just hope wherever we are Buffy is here too!” “I cannot believe we are back here after all these years.” Dawn admitted as she broke off her hug with Xander. “I never thought we would ever be in Sunnydale again…”
Spike, who was just as confused as the others, found himself walking downstairs to the basement of The Magic Box stunned to be back there once again before reaching the bottom of the stairs to be greeted by a male and female vampire duo in full vamp face eagerly awaiting him. “Got to admit taking out the big bad Spike is going to score us some major points with the boss!” The female vampire stated, creating curiosity from Spike who wondered who their boss could be and what kind of power this boss could have to be able to recreate Sunnydale on a whim. “Yeah well hate to break it to you both but neither of you are going back in one piece.” Spike promised before charging at them both, ready to dust them both and get to the bottom of what was behind all this madness masked as a memory. Spike quickly overpowered the male vampire, pulling out a wooden stake from his inner jacket pocket and launched it into the vampire’s chest, causing him to turn to dust, much to the horror of the female vampire who punched Spike across the face with force and fury, ready to kill or be killed. The female vampire managed to get in several punches to Spike’s face before Spike managed to catch her latest punch when it was in mid-air before launching the same wooden stake he had used on her partner, into her chest, causing her to turn to dust before him just like the vampire before her. Spike didn’t waste time celebrating his victory instead he found himself walking further through the basement where he quickly opened another door, one that led him into another room, a room which was half room and half cage and who else was locked up in the cage but Buffy’s son Tristan. “You lot sure do love locking me up!” Tristan complained, as he walked to his cage door. “Should have known one of you would be behind this.” “Hey, this is Giles’ creepy dungeon room, well the shop attached to it is…well was…” Spike mumbled as he looked around the room for a key to the cage door. “Really? All Giles had to do was ask.” Tristan joked as Spike found the key on the floor and picked it up before walking over to the cage door. “Hold up what do you mean this was his shop?” “Oh, nothing really but somehow you and I have wound up in Sunnydale.” Spike answered him as he began unlocking the cage door. “I thought Sunnydale was destroyed in Buffy’s big battle against the first?” Tristan asked, genuinely confused by their circumstances. “It was and it probably still is but some nutjob clearly has a case of nostalgia.” Spike guessed, uncertain to how they were in Sunnydale or how Sunnydale once again existed. “Are we the only ones here?” Tristan wondered, as Spike opened his cage door. “I mean it cannot just be us! At least I hope that because that would be hell.” “Nice to see you too kid,” Spike snapped back at him. “Something tells me we are not the only ones here, so you are in luck.”
Buffy, Giles and Willow were sat round the table within the shop floor of the Magic Box, each with a book in hand, desperately searching for some kind of answer to how they had wound back here or what could possibly have took them back. “I doubt it is a vengeance demon unless somebody has been making wishes again!” Giles stated before Dawn walked in with Xander from the training room door. “Well do not blame me I learned my lesson when Halfrek left us all homeward bound back in the day.” Dawn told the watcher, as she and Xander walked over to the table and sat down with the rest of the gang. “I just hope somewhere back in reality Andrew is still at mine looking after Joyce or else social workers are going to hate me!” “Welcome to my world Dawnie,” Buffy joked. “Although admittedly baby Joyce is nowhere near as hard work as you were.” “Hey, it is not my fault the monks made a key out of me or that some crazy hell god wanted to bleed me to get home.” Dawn replied to her older sister. “No but it was your fault for becoming a big kleptomaniac!” Xander joked with his girlfriend. “Says the guy who literally got the whole of Sunnydale singing because he was bored.” Willow chimed in, eager to tease her best-friend Xander. “Well I for one am glad that if we have to go through this nostalgic nightmare then at least we are all together.” Buffy told the group, attempting to reassure them in a time of uncertainty. “Well that’s rather uplifting love but we cannot pep talk our way out of this mess!” Spike said interrupting the group bonding time as he appeared from further back in the shop and began walking over to the scooby gang. “Clearly something has brought us here for a reason and it is going to take a lot of blood and sweat before we get out!” “Stating the obvious as ever Spike,” Buffy snapped at the peroxide blonde haired vampire as she stood up to face him. “Any helpful ideas on who or what is doing this?” “I would place all my money on the shadow demon.” Tristan stated as he appeared from further back in the shop and began walking over to them both, surprising his mother Buffy by his presence, who had believed her son was dead and gone. “Tristan,” She said with tears in her eyes, as her voice began to break. “How are you…” “Not too sure,” Tristan answered his mother before giving her a hug. “I was supposed to wind up back in the land of the living not in the past of Sunnydale.” “So, you said something about the shadow demon?” Giles asked Tristan, “Not that you no longer being dead is not remarkable it is just…” “I am the only one who does not belong in this memory world and you think I’m to blame for it somehow.” Tristan replied to the former watcher, as he broke off his hug with the mother. “Fair enough, I would probably make that assumption too.” “Nobody is blaming you,” Buffy said before looking around the room to notice everyone acting shifty, making it clear they all did blame him. “Well I for one am not blaming you!” “If you are not behind this and it is this shadow demon, where the hell are, we?” Dawn questioned her nephew, making her suspicions of him truly clear. “Other than the fact I can assure you it is definitely not the astral plane I have no bloody clue!” Tristan admitted to her, knowing nobody in the magic shop completely believed his words, nor should they, judging by his past. “I believe you!” Buffy told her son honestly, before addressing the group. “So, here’s the plan we are going to take this trip down memory lane all the way home, search the entirety of Sunnydale if it all exists again and then hunt down this shadow demon, kill it and go back to what we consider normality.”
The gang were back to basics in a town they once called home before it was destroyed, with the exception of Buffy and Angel’s son Tristan Summers along for this chaotic ride it was time for them all to get to the bottom of how they wound up home and whether or not Tristan was as innocent as he proclaimed.

Alright, judging by how successful that last Harry Potter experimental question was, Buffy's scooby gang, as a Leverage Crew? Is it too simple to say Buffy as a hitter and Giles as a mastermind?
Which version of the gang are we talking here? Can I go across the whole series? Season 1 only? All Stars? Fuck it I’m cherry picking because THAT’S HOW WE DO.
So, Giles is absolutely on the money. He’s the Mastermind, no doubt. He’s the watcher, he trains the others (mostly Buffy and Faith, but let’s be real, he trains all of them in their own way), he’s the one that works things out, leads research parties, comes up with plans. He’s the Mastermind, at least at first. Like Nate, he graduates out of that position (although I think the others sort of share it after he steps down, rather than one person picking it up).
But Buffy’s not the hitter.
Buffy is the grifter.
Think about it. Pretty, blonde, posterchild for popularity. She’s charismatic. She’s endearing. You like her. You’d probably do anything she asked you to. She’s an an excellent liar, a brilliant actor. She plays the part. The only reason she doesn’t have Sunnydale wrapped around her fucking finger is because all the bullshit with demons and vampires is Too Obvious for no one to ever notice how weird she is. If they could be even slightly more subtle, or pick slightly more convenient times to get up to their nonsense, no one would ever suspect she was anything but what she looks like.
No, the hitter? That’s Faith. And yes, I’m counting her as a Scooby. My girl got done dirty, alright. Granted, she did some people pretty dirty as well. But she was a teenage girl with a really shitty childhood, and I’m not one to use the shitty childhood as a get out of jail free card (get it), but dude. Dude. Every single thing that could’ve gone wrong for her, did. And every time the team had a chance to prove she could trust them, they fucked it up. Mostly Wesley fucked it up, but let’s not go there. And did I mention she was a teenage girl? Also, it helps that she was only Properly Evil for like, a few months, after which she was in a coma, and was Properly Evil for all of five minutes before deciding “Actually I just wanna be Buffy,” because guess what, she never WANTED to be the bad guy-
I’m getting off topic. The point is. Faith is the brawn, alright? Post-Faith, I guess that position goes to Spike, who let’s face it, is basically Buffy’s backup/guard dog from the moment he realizes he can still kill demons, and especially after his big “Oh shit I love the slayer” realization. For the record, bad decisions being made by an ostensibly helplessly evil soulless monster aside, no one EVER had Buffy’s back like Spike did. Not a single damn person. Fucking fight me. Every. Single. Other. Person. Let her down. Constantly. Or they were never in a positoin to properly have her back in the first place. The one time he really did screw it up, he realized how fucked up he was, and went off and got a fucking soul for her, so basically
Riley, for the record, is not a Hitter and does NOT count as a Scooby, because screw that guy. Also while I’m on the subject, screw Xander, because the episode where Riley leaves and Xander gives Buffy the “you’re the bad guy” speech sits so fucking wrong with me, and Xander goddamn Harris can get fucking bent. I’m still off topic, I know, I know. Sorry, I just. I have VERY STRONG OPINIONS ABOUT BUFFY.
ANYWAY. Willow is the hacker, big fucking shock. She’s... she’s literally a hacker, okay. Even when she stops being all computer-y and starts being all witch-y, her approach to witchcraft is... is to hack it. She hacks magic. Literally. That’s what gets her in so much trouble with it, because she’s too fucking good at cheating the system. It’s how she brought Buffy back. She’s the goddamned Hacker. Age. Of. The. Fucking. Geek. Baby.
Thief............ hmph. I don’t know?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?
See, the thing is, basically all of the properly involved Scoobies had to steal something at one point or another, all with basically the same level of success, so... wait.
Okay. No. The thief is Dawn.
She’s literally a thief! She steals from everybody all the goddamned time! With varying degrees of success, sure. But if she was actually trained at it, she’d be better than all of them. She’s the only Little Sibling out of the bunch (Well, okay, Tara had an older brother, but her homelife was so fucked she has Very Different Younger Sister energy than Dawn). She has a specific talent for it that I bet would serve her well if she was actually trained. I honestly at this point have read so much fanfic that I cannot for the life or me remember if canon!Spike ever helped teach her to knick stuff or if that’s just widely accepted fanon!Spike because people love that dynamic (as they should, it’s great). I’m doing a rewatch but... uh... I kinda stopped partway through S5 because I’m like four episodes away from The Body and gods I just can’t take it. Point being, I dunno if that’s legit or not. BUT. If it were legit, and she was taught how to steal, she’d be great at it.
I guess Spike is kind of also the thief. But he’s also the only one of the scoobies that’s properly been a villain (I’m not counting Faith or Willow’s brief insanity, and Angel isn’t the villain, Angelus is, so...), so naturally he’s got the shady skills. He can kind of grift and mastermind, too, except he’s too impatient for it, which is why he ends up stuck as a hitter most of the time. Everything else is too slow for his ass. See, the entirety of S2.
For fun, under the cut, the remaining scoobies and what position they’re best suited for:
Xander: Hitter??? He’s not got the super strength and he’s kind of played for laughs, but there was that whole bit where he had the tactical training from his brief stint as GI Joe in the Halloween episode. He’s a decent tactician, which is kind of the hitter’s job. I bet that if the wasn’t so busy feeling inferior to Buffy and he actually like. Trained. He could be a decent fighter.
Cordelia: Straight fucking grifter. Which she proves plenty of times on Angel. It’s extra great because she basically IS Sophie, what with the whole “can grift like a boss but put her on stage and she’s terrible” bit. She’s also a decent mastermind, also showcased on Angel. She whips him into shape from day one, and is the only thing that keeps AI running half the time. Also not unlike Sophie. Honestly Cordelia is my favorite character from the OG cast. She deserved better.
Angel: Mastermind. He’s got all of Angelus’ brains, remember, just not necessarily any reason to use them. He’s smart, though, and definitely good at planning. He’s also really into knowing the most and keeping his cards close to his chest. The parallels with Nate are a little strong, honestly, because he also has that whole... guilty conscience spiraling downward holier than thou thing going on. And yes, I do ship him and Cordy, thanks for asking.
Oz: Hacker! Not a lot of people really remember this, since his prominent character traits were “In a band”, “Willow’s boyfriend”, and “werewolf”. Plus there’s the whole flunked-senior-year plot point which I honestly think they did just to keep him around. But the first time Oz actually properly interacted with Willow was because they’d both gotten singled out for their badass computer skills on career day. He’s very nearly as good as her.
Anya: Grifter. I mean, the whole vengeance demon schtick relies on the grift. She’s very good at it. Which, she ought to be, she’s been doing it for over a thousand years. It’s sort of hilarious though because it seems like the second she loses her powers, she also loses her ability to blend in. I think that’s likely because she’s used to short term cons, and running the long con that is being human again is more difficult. Still, this is where she shines.
Riley: He doesn’t count because I kinda hate him. But fine if you wanna go there. Hitter. He doesn’t deserve the title though because Eliot is both brains and brawn and Riley can’t think his way out of a paper sack without someone giving him directions, and even then it’s dicey.
Tara: This one is super hard for me! I can’t see her as any of the actual team positions. I suppose the one skill she displays would be grifting, since she does try to hide her identity as a supposed demon from the others for a while before her birthday comes up. But honestly I see her less as a member of the crew and more as a Maggie. Voice of reason, moral high ground, not putting up with shenanigans if she can help it... yeah. Tara’s the Maggie. Every crew needs one.

Let’s imagine Netflix or Amazon Prime does a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” miniseries, following the same characters, today. They’re 40-ish now, pushing middle age. Where are they and what are they doing?
I figure Buffy is general of the Slayers, Willow is a master witch, Giles is in charge of the restored Watcher Council.
Xander is still in Sunnydale. He’s a successful building contractor now, married to Dawn, who is a successful doctor.
What are the characters on Angel doing? I’ve read that if that show had gone on for another season, they were going to make Gunn into vampire.
They all return to Sunnydale for … sure, why not? Their 20th high school reunion.

MTVS Epic Rewatch #177
VOTE ON THE SEASON POLLS!
BTVS 6x22 Grave
Stray thoughts
1) Okay, where had we left off?
Oh, right, right, Ripper is back!
2) “Daddy’s home! I’m in wicked trouble now!” I’ve always thought the way Dark!Willow delivered this line hinted at a different meaning of “Daddy,” if you know what I’m saying…
3)
WILLOW: But, hey, if you'd like to watch... I mean, that's what you Watchers are good at, right? Watching? Butting in on things that don't concern you? GILES: You concern me, Willow. Stay on this path and you'll wind up dead.
Okay, let me preface this by saying that, like probably everyone else in the fandom, I legit cheered when Giles showed up and took Dark!Willow down. And let me follow that by saying that if you’ve been reading my recaps/meta, I’m about to get just a tad bit repetitive. As awesome as Giles’s arrival was, I can’t help but feel it was too little, too late. If there was one person who could’ve predicted – and who I fear actually knew – the path down which Willow was headed, it was without doubt Giles. Let’s not forget that Giles had been a rebellious teen himself who had found power in magic. He, too, had thought he was almighty and that he was in control of magic, not the other way around. We all remember where that got him (2x08 The Dark Age.) And I know what you’ll say: he wasn’t Willow’s father nor her watcher. Pardon my French, but that’s a bunch of bullshit. The fact that he wasn’t Willow’s father nor his watcher does not excuse the fact that he stood idly by as a responsible and experienced adult witnessing how a teenager was in over her head with magic. The fact is, Giles acted irresponsibly and carelessly. He knew. And yet, from season 2/3 till season 5, all he did was either sternly frown or mildly warn Willow of how dangerous the magic she was dealing with was. Come season 6, and yes, I cheered when he scolded her in Flooded. Yet, I can’t help but feel this was, again, too little, too late. A good old scolding is hardly a deterrent for a witch intoxicated with the power of magic. If anything, it’s the opposite. Moreover, Giles found himself speechless at Willow’s not-so-subtle threats. I can admit that, in spite of how similar his own experience was to Willow’s, he might have been ill-prepared to tutor her or guide her in the right path (but then again, he does end up doing exactly that in season 7, so there really wasn’t any reason for him not to do it before she went dark…) If that was the case, then Flooded was probably the moment he should’ve gone to the Council or the Coven or whoever was better prepared to help her. That is, he should’ve done it when he first saw signs of Willow’s darkness. Not when she had already gone over the edge. So, as much as I’ll always see his return in Two to Go as a moment of awesome, I can’t help but feel he failed Willow. Rant over. (but will be resumed, you’ve been warned...)
4) And this is also a moment of awesome…
5) Of course, it doesn’t last long…
6) This moment is so sweet…
BUFFY: What did you do? GILES: Contained her and her powers within a binding field. It puts her in a kind of... stasis for the time... You cut your hair.
Damn, I will end up giffing this entire episode, won’t I?
7)
GILES: Buffy, what's happened here? BUFFY: God. I don't even know where to start. GILES: Well, Willow's clearly been abusing the magicks.
But you already knew this, dude!!!! The day you left she had erased everyone’s memories, for fuck’s sake! It was as much of a problem then as it was now!
8) Back me up, shouldn’t this be written on the season 6 DVD back cover?
BUFFY: [Willow] was [abusing magic]... and I barely even noticed. (...) Xander left Anya at the altar, and Anya's a vengeance demon again... Dawn's a total klepto... money's been so tight that I've been slinging burgers at the Doublemeat Palace ... And I've been sleeping with Spike.
All written on this screenshot, of course.
Yes, it’s a super dark season, and everyone screws up and suffers and it’s all #pain, but when you condense it all like this, it’s so outrageously funny, isn’t it?
9)
WILLOW: I need you, Anya. I need you to do something for me.
ANYA: I know what you're trying to do. And I hate to burst your bubble, but that mind control mojo doesn't work on vengeance demons, so why don't you just- WILLOW: Stop talking and listen. ANYA: Okay.
10)
GILES Can you forgive me? BUFFY: For what? GILES: I should never have left. BUFFY: No. You were right to leave. We're just... stupid. GILES: I know you're all stupid. I should never have abandoned you.
No, no, you really shouldn’t have, Rupert.
11)
GILES: Sometimes the most adult thing you can do is... ask for help when you need it.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING, GILES?!!! WHAT WAS ALL OF THIS, THEN, IF NOT BUFFY ASKING YOU TO HELP HER?!!!!
6x04 Flooded
BUFFY: I'm glad you're back. GILES: Well, I'm glad you are too.
6x05 Life Serial
BUFFY: This is, this is great. This is more than great. I don't... really know how to say this... but it's a little like having Mom back.
6x07 Once More With Feeling
BUFFY: Oh. I thought you took care of that. GILES: Right. BUFFY: What would I do without you?
6x08 Tabula Rasa
GILES: You have to be strong. I'm, I'm trying to- BUFFY: Trying to, to what? Desert me? Abandon me? Leave me all alone when I really need somebody? GILES: I don't want to leave- BUFFY: So don't. Please don't. I can't do this without you. (...) So I won't! No giving up. You can be here, and I can still be strong.
Like, I get that it all sounds so wise and beautiful in the dawn of their reunion, but it seems as though the writers totally forgot the way Giles acted prior to his leaving. Buffy did ask for help in absolutely unequivocal terms. And Giles deliberately refused it. So it’s all fine and dandy with him being back and them laughing it all off. But the crux of the matter is Buffy needed him and he wasn’t there. What’s worse, he comes back and tells her: “you should’ve asked me to stay and help you.” Are you for real, dude?
12)
BUFFY: Part of me. I just... I don't understand... why I'm back. GILES: You have a calling. BUFFY: But it was my time, Giles. Someone would have taken my place. So why?
Someone had already taken her place, but for whatever reason (the reason being she’s the title character...) Buffy continued to be the “official” slayer. I get that they were most likely setting up the arc for season 7, with the question of why she was back (a question that she quite conveniently hadn’t asked herself until the season finale...) but can we please remember that the Slayer line runs through Faith now?
13) Oh, look, Puppet Anya!
Also, is this where Taylor Swift got her inspiration for Look What You Made Me Do?
[this]
14) Why are they still walking?
Like, I get that it wouldn’t make a difference, either way, considering Willow can teleport at will, but idk, I feel I’d still want to put as much distance as humanly possible between the person who wants to murder me and my precious self.
15) Oh, Xander, your pettiness is showing…
DAWN: Where are we going?
XANDER: I have no idea. DAWN: What? XANDER: I don't know, okay? I can't even run away well. And that's something I'm usually good at. DAWN: Maybe we should we go back and help. XANDER: Yeah, 'cause I've been such a big help already. Standing around like a monkey while Buffy gets shot. Tara's dead... and Willow... losing... DAWN: Well, feeling sorry for yourself isn't helping either, Xander, okay? You know, if Spike were here, he'd go back and fight.
XANDER: Sure, if he wasn't too busy trying to rape your sister.
DAWN: What?!
XANDER: Forget it.
DAWN: I don't believe you. XANDER: Fine. DAWN: He wouldn't do that.
XANDER: Is this blind spot like a genetic trait with the Summers women? The only useful thing Spike ever did was finally leave town.
There are a number of reasons why I find Xander’s behavior problematic here. First and foremost, this was Buffy’s traumatic experience to tell, especially where her little sister is concerned. Buffy’s. No one else’s. Okay? Second of all, it’s easy to tell he’s only saying this to A) make himself look good compared to a would-be-rapist, which is setting the bar very, very low, Xan-Xan. B) destroying Dawn’s idealization of Spike (which I think was definitely needed, just not in this way.) Thirdly, he drops this hell of a bomb to a 15-year-old, btw, just because he’s being petty and then he’s all like “forget it.” And it’s easy to tell he’s talking to Dawn as if she were an equal to him and Buffy, which she is not. She is a 15-year-old! Why did he think he had any right to be discussing - with Dawn of all people! - what had happened to Buffy without her consent and, more importantly, in those terms?
16) Meanwhile…
I’ve never found creepy-crawlers this sexy, tbh.
But as regards the plot, the writers were definitely trying to throw us off. Like, it has always puzzled me how there are people who still believe Spike was there to get his chip out and then the soul thing just happened to him. Granted, the lines seem to be hinting at that, and James’s delivery every time Spike refers to Buffy is full of spite and resentment. And it was definitely all written in a way that would lead us to believe he wanted the demons to get his chip out. But, like, that’s what a plot twist is? Literally? You think the plot is going one way, and then, boom, it goes in another way. And if you reread all of his lines knowing that he was actually there to get his soul back, it makes even more sense. Still, the fact that people still believe Spike was there to get rid of his chip is completely perplexing to me. But more on that later.
17)
WILLOW: Boy, you just don't get it, do you? Nothing can hurt me now. This? ...is nothing. It's all... nothing.
GILES: I see. If you lose someone you love... the other people in your life who care about you... become meaningless. I wonder what Tara would say about that.
OOOOH BURN!!!
18) How sad is it that Buffy left to save Dawn knowing that she was most likely leaving Giles to die?
19) Giles kind of hit Willow with his horrible breath, didn’t he?
20) Ok, so this…
…was his plan all along. But like, he was banking on a lot of things going his way to make this work, right? Like, how did he know that when given the chance, Willow wouldn’t kill him before even considering taking his powers? And even if she did take his powers, how could he be sure she would react to those feelings with compassion? (which she didn’t…)
21) This moment, though. Alyson just kills it.
WILLOW: Wow. Whoa. Who's your supplier? This is... wow. It's incredible. I mean, I am so juiced... Giles, it's like... no... mortal person has... ever had... this much power. Ever. It's like I, I'm connected to everything... I can feel... it feels like... I... I can feel...
WILLOW: ...everyone. Oh. Oh my God. All the emotion. All the pain. No, it, it's too much. It's just too much.
22) Oh, Jonathan, what happened to “we will do our time”?
I get it, they had served their purpose from a plot point of view. They were merely a device to pit the main characters against each other.
23)
GILES: I know where Willow is. She's going to finish it. ANYA: Finish what? GILES: The world.
24) I love how subtle Dawn is about bringing up the whole Spike thing…
DAWN: This looks a little like Spike's place. You know, under his crypt. What are you doing?
BUFFY: If we can pull these out, we can use the coffins for height. Maybe get out of here!
DAWN: Maybe one of the tunnels Spike uses is around here. Uh, we could use it to get to his place.
25) Dawn, you’re damn right.
BUFFY: That's the last place on Earth we need to be. DAWN: Oh, but it was good enough for you to take me there after what he did to you.
BUFFY: What he... DAWN: Tried to do. Whatever. BUFFY: Xander. DAWN: So it's true? BUFFY: Dawn, you may not have noticed, we're in really big trouble here. This isn't- DAWN: Why did you not tell me? BUFFY: Because you didn't need to know. DAWN: Yes, I do. I need to know! I'm not a kid anymore. BUFFY: Dawn, I'm trying to protect you. DAWN: Well, you can't! Look around, Buffy. We're trapped in here! Willow's killing and people I love keep dying! And you cannot protect me from that.
26) How was it day already?
TV show daytime savings, I guess.
27)
BUFFY: There's... no temple on Kingman's Bluff.
Well, there is now…
28)
ANYA Something else Giles said. No magic or supernatural force can stop her. BUFFY: What does that mean? ANYA: Don't know. He, he said, "the Slayer can't stop her," and then he said a bunch of other stuff.
Get it? This is the other reason why Buffy couldn’t have been the one to stop Willow just by talking to her. It just had to be someone else, someone human. But not just anyone...
29) I don’t know why I get so emotional with this moment. Seriously. Tears in my eyes, you guys.
BUFFY: They just keep coming. I can't take them all. Dawn. Will you help me?
DAWN: I got your back.
30) Anya always telling it like it is…
ANYA: Giles? Giles! Don't die. Not yet, there-there are things I wanna tell you. Thanks a lot for coming. It was good of you to teleport all this way. Though in retrospect, it probably would have been better if you hadn't come and given Willow all that magic that made her like ten times more powerful. That would have been a plus.
31) And then, the final confrontation… (I’m crying already…)
You see, she attacks Xander just once, and she instantly flinches with regret and pain. But more on this later…
32) Yet another moment of awesome…
DAWN: What? You think I never watched you?
33) So, let me share some of the highlights of Xander’s and Willow’s confrontation and then – after I’m done crying my heart out – I’ll offer some of my thoughts…
WILLOW: You can't stop this. XANDER: Yeah, I get that. It's just, where else am I gonna go? You've been my best friend my whole life. World gonna end... where else would I want to be? WILLOW: Is this the master plan? You're going to stop me by telling me you love me? XANDER: Well, I was going to walk you off a cliff and hand you an anvil, but... it seemed kinda cartoony. WILLOW: Still making jokes. XANDER: I'm not joking. I know you're in pain. I can't imagine the pain you're in. And I know you're about to do something apocalyptically evil and stupid, and hey. I still want to hang. You're Willow. WILLOW: Don't call me that. XANDER: First day of kindergarten. You cried because you broke the yellow crayon, and you were too afraid to tell anyone. You've come pretty far, ending the world, not a terrific notion. But the thing is? Yeah. I love you. I loved crayon-breaky Willow and I love ... scary veiny Willow. So if I'm going out, it's here. If you wanna kill the world? Well, then start with me. I've earned that. WILLOW: You think I won't? XANDER: It doesn't matter. I'll still love you. WILLOW: Shut up.
XANDER: I love you. I... love y-
WILLOW: Shut up!!
XANDER: I love you, Willow. WILLOW: Stop!
XANDER: I love you. WILLOW: Stop.
XANDER: I love you.
You see, this moment felt earned. This was a moment six seasons in the making. It just had to be Xander. There was no way around it. He was the only one who could get to her and break her defenses. He was probably the only one who could console her in the dawn of Tara’s death. The first interaction both of them had in the show was with each other. Long before Buffy, before vampires and hellmouths and werewolves and gay love and vengeance demons and magic and apocalypses, there were Willow and Xander, Xander and Willow. It is incredibly fitting, then, that come the end of either of them, the other should be right there by their side. I’m not diminishing Buffy and Willow’s friendship in any way. But Xander was the one who truly knew Willow best, and vice-versa. They knew each other since they were kids, and they were each other’s friends when probably no one else wanted to be. So the reason this moment feels so earned and overwhelmingly moving is because of the history. It’s the history we’ve witnessed since season 1, and the one prior to that, which we’ve been told and also pieced together. This moment has such a huge impact only because of the history between these two characters. Her love for her first and closest friend was the last spark of humanity left in her, you see? Friendship love is the best kind of love. I’m so emotional right now.
34) Can you blame Dawn for asking this question, though?
DAWN: Wait, is... is that happy crying? BUFFY: Yes, dummy. You think I wanted the world to end? DAWN: I don't know. Didn't you?
35)
BUFFY: Things have really sucked lately, but it's all gonna change. And I wanna be there when it does. I want to see my friends happy again. And I want to see you grow up. The woman you're gonna become. Because she's gonna be beautiful. And she's going to be powerful. I got it so wrong. I don't want to protect you from the world. I want to show it to you.
And it also feels fitting that Buffy is finally overcoming her depression with the person who was the very reason she decided not to jump off the tower again at the beginning of the season.
36) But it’s not over yet… (and this is why I think it should be perfectly clear that Spike was in fact after his soul...)
DEMON VOICE: You have endured the required trials. SPIKE: Bloody right I have. So you'll give me what I want. Make me what I was. So Buffy can get what she deserves.
DEMON: Very well. We will return...your soul.
DUN-DUN-DUNNNNNNN!
37) All in all, a great season finale unlike any of the others. And a pretty hopeful end to a rather dark season.

The Trouble with Trolls
Today I learned that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the Trope Namer for “Insane Troll Logic.”
So while Buffy’s still moping about Riley’s departure, she talks to Giles about getting more information on Glory. They’re going to go to the Watchers’ Council, because their research isn’t getting any solid results. Giles assures Buffy that they aren’t going to tell anyone about Dawn, just that Glory’s after a Key of some sort. He’s going to go to England though, so he leaves the magic shop in Anya’s hands. But Willow thinks that Anya isn’t great with people (which is true) and so she says she’ll help too, much to Anya’s chagrin.
Basically this episode is about Willow and Anya conflicting. I mean there’s some other stuff about Spike trying to get Buffy to like him and Buffy getting over Riley, but more entertainingly, Anya calls out Willow on just taking ingredients from the magic shop for her own spells without actually buying it, especially since Giles isn’t there. Xander and Tara don’t want to hop into this argument so they leave.
Willow starts trying to perform some spell, and Anya keeps interrupting, which leads to...a troll being released right in front of them? I have no idea how that works, but the troll starts rampaging around town with his hammer. He goes to the Bronze because he smells booze and wants it, interrupting Spike and Xander’s conversation. Anya and Willow arrive, and haha, funny story, the troll recognizes Anya! Turns out that he was a normal guy that Anya turned into a troll back when she was a witch, and that was how she got offered a job as a vengeance demon!
Huh.
The troll wrecks the Bronze and gets away. Willow and Anya go to the magic shop to work on a way to fix this and also hash out their issues. Basically both of them think the other has the potential to hurt Xander big time. Anya thinks Willow will turn Xander against her, and Willow thinks Anya might actually hurt him as a result of her last job as a vengeance demon. After working out that neither of them actually wants to hurt Xander, the troll comes marching in. Xander arrives shortly afterward, and the troll decides he’ll only kill one of them, and that Xander has to decide which one: his best friend Willow, or his girlfriend Anya. Xander refuses to choose though, but before the troll can kill anybody Buffy bursts in. Willow works on the spell, but when the troll basically says that Xander and Anya’s relationship is doomed, Buffy, still not whole from her break-up with Riley and hoping that all the couples she knows stay together, goes nuts and beats the snot out of the troll. And then Willow’s magic sends him to another dimension. Or something.
Giles gets back at the end and is talking to Joyce and Buffy about what he found out--and that’s nothing. The Watchers are looking into it however, and will call when they have more information. Dawn overhears the conversation, and though they don’t mention any specifics, they do mention that Dawn’s in danger and that Joyce is worried about it.
NOTES!
-I did not know that Insane Troll Logic was named after a line in the show! When the troll asks Xander to pick, he says that he can’t choose between the death of his girlfriend and his best friend, and says it’s “Insane troll logic!”
-Spike has a box of chocolates and is practicing talking to Buffy using a mannequin with a wig? Which he gets frustrated with and starts beating with the box of chocolates...look, I talked smack about Riley last episode, but Spike isn’t prime love interest material either.
-After the Bronze gets trashed Spike tries to look good for Buffy by not drinking anyone’s blood, but she basically points out that asking for recognition for not doing something terrible isn’t quite good either.
-Yay for sister time! I like that Buffy and Dawn sit down and talk about her break-up with Riley. This is a thing siblings do, people.
-Giles leaves for a couple of days and his store gets trashed! Of course.
-So many episode plots begin with “Willow does a spell that goes wrong.” I know I’ve harped on it, and this time it’s Anya’s fault, not hers, but, like….really? Magic is dangerous guys. Don’t do this sort of magic if you cause a catastrophe every other week.
-One of the first scenes of the episode is actually Buffy fighting off a demon that was attacking nuns in a convent, and when that’s dealt with, we see her asking one of the nuns about cloistered life, because after the break-up she’s more than willing to give up men forever. And she asks about the food, which is an important question! Thing is Buffy, I’m pretty sure that as someone who isn’t apparently Catholic, let alone religious at all, would really make a good nun? More importantly, as it’s put in The Sound of Music, a convent isn’t a place to hide.
-There’s a couple of mentions Willow not being a threat to Anya and Xander’s relationship because “She’s gay now.” Which...uh...okay? I’m not going to say that’s not possible, but given that she was pining after Xander for years (which, admittedly, might be confusing strong friendship feelings with romantic ones) and that whole thing with Oz...I mean the conclusion would lead to biswxuality, which is still rather underrepresented in mainstream media.
Or I dunno, maybe she’s lesbian now. [shrugs] Not my writing, not my problem I guess.
-Spike is about to suggest the hospital when the troll asks for where to find babies to eat. Xander has to shut him up. Oh Spike, you’re terrible at being a good person.
-I have some mixed feelings though about the overall story? Like, it fleshes out two of the female characters much more, and we see how that works, but their conflict is entirely about...a dude. And in-story it makes sense, and it’s not as if Xander’s a nobody to the audience, but I’d like to see some development for Anya that’s less related to guys. That doesn’t mean I hate the episode, or think it’s bad even, but just something to note.

Another Ranking game Buffy edition - Rank all the original Scoobies (Giles, Buffy, Willow, Xander) in order of your favorite to least favorite. Again no ties allowed ;) Rank these Buffy ships: Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike, Buffy/Riley, Willow/Oz, Willow/Tara, Xander/Anya. Rank the relationships: Buffy/Dawn, Buffy/Joyce, Buffy/Giles, Buffy/Willow, Buffy/Xander, Xander/Willow. And, finally, rank the seven seasons from your favorite to least favorite. Have fun!
Sorry about taking a while to respond to this, I’ve been crazy busy at work and like to take the time to properly consider my responses to asks like these.
The original Scoobies
1. Buffy - I love Buffy so much. She’s one of my all time favourite characters. There are few characters that are as well written as Buffy; she’s so complex and multi-layered. I love her strength, courage and resillience, and that despite being the Chosen One, she’s deeply flawed.
2. Giles - I love Giles’ wit, sarcasm and intellect. He can always make me laugh with his one-liners. I like that despite being a cerebral type that’s always got his nose in a book he’s also the kind of man that wears and earring and likes to play his guitar. He’s just a very lovable character.
3. Xander - I really like Xander and think he gets a lot of unfair hate. He’s not perfect, but none of the Buffyverse characters are, that’s what makes them so amazing. He’s funny, loyal and a genuine hero.
4. Willow - I’m not in love with Willow’s character, but appreciate the journey she goes on across the series. She undergoes huge change from season 1 to season 7 and seeing her transform from a nerd who lacks in confidence to a powerful witch is interesting to see.
Romantic ships
1. Buffy/Angel - Obviously Bangel were going to take the top spot. They’re one of my greatest OTPs and I’ll always love them. Their relationship is the definition of star-crossed lovers and it’s portrayed so well. Their connection and chemistry will always blow me away. There is simply something profound about their relationship which trumps any other relationship on BTVS.
2. Willow/Oz - They’re so adorable and a genuine partnership. I don’t agree with or like what was done to them in season 4 and find it to be completely OOC for Oz to cheat on Willow. Oz was the first person to genuinely like Willow for who she was and to boost her self-esteem. They were on the same wave-length, they knew how to laugh together and they were always united. They’re not an in-your-face type ship, but they’re the kind that are always there in the background holding hands or exchanging a loving look, and I really like that about them.
3. Willow/Tara - I love how Willow and Tara started out; how they bonded over magic and Willow saw herself in Tara who was somewhat of an outcast and painfully shy and unconfident. I love how they came to develop feelings for one another so authentically just by simply spending time together as friends and how their romance blossomed naturally. I have issues with certain things that happened between them in season 6 and I do think that overall, the relationship was really unhealthy for both of them particularly towards the end, but I see the love and connection between them and I believe it.
4. Buffy/Spike - It may surprise some that Spuffy are so high on this list because I don’t actually ship them at all, but I still enjoy their dynamic. Buffy and Spike are very strong as individual characters, so when they come together they’re compelling to watch. I don’t ship them because I think the relationship was incredibly unhealthy and damaging to Buffy, however, I’m able to see the allure of the ship and think that it’s actually a very unique and authentic relationship considering it follows the enemies-to-lovers trope.
5. Buffy/Riley - I’m pretty indifferent to Buffy and Riley. I don’t ship them but I don’t hate them either. I think they had some sweet moments and weirdly, Riley was probably the best relationship Buffy had in regards to being able to live a relatively “normal” life with him. I also think that he was a positive influence in Buffy’s life, particularly in the beginning. However, Riley was always intimidated by Buffy’s strength and powers as the Slayer and he let his insecurities get in the way as a result. I also think that Buffy, despite loving Riley a lot, was never able to open her heart to him completely because of her history with Angel. By the time Buffy realised how much she loved Riley and was prepared to fully open up, Riley had already decided to move on. Buffy and Riley aren’t and never will be epic love, but I think they loved each other a lot more than people recognise and that Riley was definitley more than just a rebound relationship for Buffy.
6. Xander/Anya - Once again, I’m indifferent to Xander and Anya. I don’t find anything appealing about them as a ship, but I don’t dislike them either. I don’t think they were ever really well-suited and that they only got together because Anya pursued Xander and was pretty forceful with him. In the end, the relationship was never going to work because they were too different. However, I appreciate that they really did love each other and they had some pretty funny scenes together.
Platonic ships
1. Buffy/Dawn - Buffy and Dawn’s relationship is one of the relationships that is the heart of the show. The fact that Dawn was created and in a sense was never truly Buffy’s sister meant that Buffy could’ve easily rejected her. Instead, Buffy accepted Dawn as being her own flesh and blood; a part of her. They argued and disagreed on occassion, just like all siblings do, but they were fiercely protective of each other and loved each other deeply. After Joyce’s death, Buffy took on a parental role and not only had to be Dawn’s sister, but also her mother, father, teacher, guide, friend and everything else in between. Dawn looked up to Buffy as her role model and Buffy allowed Dawn to grow into a strong, beautiful and compassionate young lady. Buffy said that Xander was her strength, but so was Dawn. I think without Dawn in her life she wouldn’t have had the same will to carry on after Joyce’s death.
2. Buffy/Giles - I just love Buffy and Giles’ dynamic. Giles was assigned to be Buffy’s Watcher and had a professional obligation to guide her, but their relationship became so much more than that. Giles saw Buffy’s strength, courage, vitality and compassion; he saw beyond her being the Slayer and understood that she was a girl. His greatest fear was failing her and he did everything he could to guide and protect her for as long as he could, even after his official duties as her Watcher ended. Giles fulfilled the father-figure role in Buffy’s life since her biological father was absent from her life, and Buffy greatly benefitted from that. There were so many people in Buffy’s life who she couldn’t have made it without, and Giles is certainly one of those people. It’s not just his knowledge as a Watcher that made him so needed, it was the wisdom and guidance he provided Buffy with whenever she was in need as a Slayer or as a girl.
3. Xander/Willow - Xander and Willow remind me of the relationship I have with my best friend. When you have a friend that you’ve grown up with and that has been there with you all your life you bond in an inexplicable way. That person almost becomes a part of you. That’s the kind of bond Xander and Willow have. They know and understand each other better than anyone; they accept each other completely and everything is effortless with them. Because they’ve known each other for so long they’re naturally on the same wave-length and get each other. The scene where Xander brings Willow back from the darkness always makes me so emotional and proves how strong their bond is. There’s no one else in the world that could’ve brought Willow back in that moment.
4. Buffy/Joyce - I’m a sucker for mother/daughter relationships. Buffy and Joyce’s relationship is so endearing. Joyce is a devoted mother who always does her best by Buffy. She accepts her being the Slayer and does anything she can to try and make Buffy’s life easier. It’s not a relationship that’s exactly given a lot of focus, but when Joyce dies you immediately feel the significance of that relationship in a way you don’t before then. Joyce is Buffy’s everything and without her Buffy feels like she’s floating in space and completely alone. I think the fact that Buffy’s parents split meant that Buffy and Joyce developed an even closer relationship than before. Joyce most likely felt like she had to try and make up for the absence of Buffy’s father and try and be both parents at the same time. Initially, their relationship wasn’t ideal because Buffy was always having to lie and keep secrets from Joyce, but once Joyce found out Buffy was the slayer they seemed to become closer than ever before.
5. Buffy/Xander - Their friendship is sweet and understated, but it doesn’t stand out to me as being one of my favourite dynamics on the show. I think maybe because Xander has an unreciprocated crush on Buffy in the early seasons it meant that they had a slighly unbalanced relationship initially. However, their friendship was consistent and Xander was fiercely loyal to Buffy and by far the most consistent male presence in her life.
6. Buffy/Willow - Again, Buffy and Willow’s friendship is sweet. I like that on paper they’re unlikely friends with Buffy being the stereotypical popular pretty girl and Willow the stereotypical unpopular nerdy girl. But actually, they were able to connect beyond that and their differences meant that they complimented one another and worked together well. The only reason they’re ranked last is because I feel that Willow massively betrayed Buffy with her actions in season 6 and although it was understandable given the circumstances and Buffy forgave her, I do think that created some ongoing friction between them which simmered beneath the surface from that point on.
Seasons
1. Season 2 - I love this season and my latest BTVS rewatch reinforced my love for it. Spike and Dru are an epic pairing that are intruiging and fantastic villains; Oz and Willow are adorable and their relationship is fresh; Xander and Cordy are an unexpected but again fresh dynamic; we finally see Giles meet someone who genuinely connects with in Jenny; Buffy and Angel’s relationship is compelling and the Angelus arc is fantastic. All of the characters develop so much more in this season in comparison to season 1. The stakes are raised and there are some major moments with Jenny and Kendra’s deaths, and Buffy sacrificing Angel to save the world. All in all it’s a strong and consistent season.
2. Season 3 - It’s a strong season. The Mayor is a great villain, Faith is a complex character who is fresh and intruiging, Buffy and Angel’s relationship is compelling and it feels like there’s a coherent arc and build-up with a strong ending with The Graduation two-parter.
3. Season 5 - The first time I watched BTVS I wasn’t a fan of season 5, but I think that’s because I wasn’t a fan of Dawn. Now that I love Dawn I also love this season. Dawn is a fantastic addition to the show, her entire arc as The Key and Glory as a villain is one of the strongest of any season. Joyce’s death is shocking and heartbreaking resulting in one of the most powerful episodes of television ever made. Willow’s magic grows, Buffy’s character grows more complex and the premiere with Dracula shows that immediately and despite the immorality and to be frank, grossness, of Spike creating the Buffybot, she’s a humourous addition to the show. But the Glory and Dawn plot is definitley what makes this season so strong.
4. Season 6 - Despite the fact that this season breaks away from the humour that BTVS was built on, I really like the change in direction. This season shows the characters going through real hardships in a way we’ve never seen before. BTVS is known for using metaphors to portray the different stages of life and growing up, and this season does the same and shows how incredibly hard life can suddenly become when you enter adulthood. Buffy’s resurrection and consequent depression is hard-hitting and powerful, Xander and Anya’s relationship break-down is sad, Willow’s descent into dark magic is difficult to watch and Tara’s death is shocking and traumatic. And the Trio as villains defy the general expectations of what villains should be. There’s no denying it’s the darkest season of the show, but I appreciate the new depths this season goes to and how far the characters are pushed.
5. Season 4 - This season has grown on me a lot over the years. There are some really great episodes (Something Blue, Hush, A New Man) in this season and I enjoy the humour and lightheartness of it. Spike as a season regular works and I love the humour he brings and the complicated and contradictory nature of his relationship with the Scoobies whereby he’s their enemy but also their ally. I also think that the transition from high school to college is done pretty well considering how important the high school setting was for the show. We see Buffy, Willow and Xander all change and mature as they enter the next phase of their lives. Willow and Tara’s blossoming relationship is a joy to watch and Tara is a nice addition to the group. However, Adam as the Big Bad of the season and the Initative storyline generally massively lets the season down.
6. Season 1 - It’s not a bad season, but I just find season 1 generally slow and a bit dull. It took me about 4 attempts to actually get through the whole season and I didn’t actually fall in love with the show until season 2. It’s a safe season and a good introduction to the series but is pretty forgettable and doesn’t stand out in my mind.
7. Season 7 - This is a bad season, and lets be honest, probably shouldn’t have happened. Willow’s entire development and arc from season 6 is dismissed and it does her character a huge disservice; the Potentials are so dull and it just doesn’t work; The First as the Big Bad is a poor one to finish with; the Buffy and Spike relationship doesn’t work for me and overall it’s a pretty meh finish to an otherwise brilliant series.
