Anderson Bonner
Tumblr media
Prominent Texas landowner and businessman Anderson Bonner was born enslaved in Alabama around 1839. Not much is known about his younger years. Family history states that Bonner was given as a wedding present to the daughter of his former master, who moved him from Alabama to Arkansas. Anderson may have been “refugeed” in Texas during the Civil War when nearly 100,000 enslaved people from neighboring states were forcibly brought there by slaveholders to avoid the Union Army freeing them as it gradually occupied more of the Confederacy. If Bonner was in Texas by 1865, he—like other Lone Star state enslaved people—gained his freedom when Union General Gordon Granger and Union Troops under his command arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865 and pronounced the end of slavery. That announcement became the basis for the Juneteenth holiday.
Sometime in 1865 Bonner married a woman known only as Eliza. Over time the couple had ten children, Anderson Jr, Newton, William, Ed, John, Andy, Mary, Martha, Charlie and Nash. Bonner arrived in Dallas, Texas, around 1870 with his brother Louis, and sister Caroline and they worked on a farm in the White Rock Creek area. Bonner by this time had acquired modest wealth. The 1870 Census lists his financial worth at $275 or approximately $5,456 in 2020 dollars. On August 10, 1874 Bonner purchased sixty acres of land, signing the deed with an “X”, as he never learned to read or write. He soon began leasing his land and the houses on it to cotton growing sharecroppers. With the money he earned, he bought more land. Bonner eventually amassed over two thousand acres of land in what is now North Dallas and the Dallas suburb of Richardson. The Medical City Dallas Hospital now sits on what was once the Bonner farm and the North Central Expressway divides Bonner’s original property.
Census records in 1900 reveal that six of the ten Bonner children still lived on the Bonner farm. Cotton, corn, and fruits were grown on the family farm worked mostly by Bonner, his children, and sharecroppers. Bonner’s sister, Caroline married into the Fields family, and one of her children married into the Giddings family, both prominent African American families of Dallas in the late 19th Century. In 1903, Eliza was killed in a oil lamp explosion in the family home. Sixty-four-year-old Bonner then married a woman named Lucinda, but the couple had no children.
Anderson Bonner passed away at the age of 82 in 1920. He was buried in White Rock Colored Union Cemetery (now White Rock Garden of Memories Cemetery), in Addison county. His descendants established the Anderson Bonner Endowment Scholarship that helps support Richardson Public School students who attend Prairie View A&M University. The first public school for black children in the North Dallas, the Vickery and Hillcrest school was renamed the Anderson Bonner School before its closing in 1955. The city of Dallas officially named the park west of Medical City Hospital, Anderson Bonner Park in 1976. The park consists of 44.1 acres of Bonner’s original land.

The Painted Hall, Greenwich
Tumblr media
During the king’s coronation I visited Greenwich's "Painted Hall." This series of rooms depict scenes relating to the success of British Protestantism and the beginning of burgeoning imperial expansion. Following the vital English naval victory over France at La Hougue in 1692, Queen Mary ordered that a hospital be built for retired seamen, in keeping with the existing hospital for former soldiers at Chelsea. While Mary died before its completion her husband, William III, saw the projected through. Sir Christopher Wren (of St Paul’s fame) and his assistant, Nicholas Hawksmoor, designed a grand series of buildings at Greenwich, in London. The Royal Hospital at Greenwich acted as a retirement home for sailors between the 1700s and late 1900s. And at its heart is the Painted Hall, a series of rooms where a relatively unknown artist, James Thornhill, was commissioned to paint scenes of British-Protestant triumph.
Tumblr media
At the centre is King William III and Queen Mary shown overseeing ‘The Triumph of Peace and Liberty over Tyranny.’ Immediately above the couple and to their left is the allegorical figure of Prudence holding a mirror, one of the four Cardinal Virtues.
Tumblr media
To her right are Providence and Concord, while to her left is Justice. Beneath Justice is a woman representing Europe, who is accepting the ‘cap of liberty,’ the ancient red Phrygian cap, from William, who in turn is accepting an olive branch from ‘Peace.’
Tumblr media
Beneath William’s foot is the defeated Louis XIV of France with a broken sword, and a tumbling, discarded papal crown. Beneath them the ‘Spirit of Architecture’ along with Truth and Time are overseeing plans showing the actual construction of the hospital.
Above it all, Apollo rides his chariot, while the signs of the zodiac are arrayed around the edges. At the bottom, Pallas Athena and Hercules crush the Hydra and the Gorgon, ‘expelling the Vices from the Kingdom of William and Mary.’
Tumblr media
Another section of the ceiling shows a captured Spanish galley laden with the spoils of war, a reference to the British capture of Gibraltar in 1704. Diana, Goddess of the moon, passes mastery of the tides over to British sailors. Beneath them are representations of the English rivers Avon, Severn and Humber.
To the left and the right, scientific advancement is celebrated by the presence of astronomers Tycho Brahe, John Flamsteed, Copernicus and Newton’s ‘Principia.’ The gods Neptune and Cybele oversee it all.
Tumblr media
The next section of the ceiling shows HMS Blenheim being filled with the spoils of war by the winged figure of Victory. Beneath are more river representations along with the City of London and figures representing navigation and astronomy. On the left is Galileo, while Zeus and Juno watch from above.
Tumblr media
The painted hall took decades to complete, and saw further dynastic change, as George I, originally of Hanover, became king after William III’s successor, Queen Anne, died. George maintained the Protestant ascendancy, as portrayed in the upper hall chamber adjoining the main hall.
Here we see George I, his wife Sophia of Hanover and their children and grandchildren beneath St Paul’s, overseen the a figure representing “the Golden Age” with overflowing cornucopia. The artist, James Thornhill, added himself on the right. Over them is an inscription quoting Virgil's Eclogues, which translates as ‘a new generation has descended from the heavens.’
Tumblr media
On the left of the upper hall is a depiction of William III’s arrival in England at the start of the Glorious Revolution in 1688, while George I is shown arriving on the opposite side of the hall (rather unrealistically in a chariot) in 1714.

Putting the Mid in Midnight: Wild Blue Yonder
Tumblr media
If I were to mention the film “The Horror at Party Beach,” no one would blame you for having never heard of it. In the annals of horror history, it left minimal impact on the genre. Why then were audiences asked to sign a “fright waiver,” before being permitted to see the film? Because it was never about the audience dying of fright. It was a dare to the viewer, one almost as old as cinema itself. William Castle used to start his films with a warning to the more delicate members of the audience. Reports of people fainting during “The Exorcist,” or more recently “Terrifier 2,” create a buzz around those films. Can you survive the horror or will you wind up in the hospital? The only way to know for sure is to buy a ticket! This is why when Russell T Davies issued a warning that “Wild Blue Yonder,” was possibly too scary for the kiddies, I saw it for what it was.
While I don’t doubt there was some concern that certain children may be disturbed by the imagery and tone of last night’s episode, it feels more like Davies asking audiences to just go with it. Similarly, Davies also asked us to just go with the idea of David Tennant returning by first introducing us to Ncuti Gatwa. “This isn’t a forever thing or the show moving backwards. Just go it.” After seeing how tumultuous the fandom has been since *checks notes* 1963, it feels like Davies’ tactic to unite the fandom is to encourage them to just go with it. It also feels like Davies is riffing a little, trying new things. “Wild Blue Yonder,” is an engaging exploration of the new while also referencing some of the old. Yet despite all of its experimentation, much of it feels like familiar territory.
First and foremost, I would like to state that I admire the hell out of this episode. On the rad vs trad debate, this puts one giant foot down for rad. With that said and out of the way, we need to talk about that intro. When it comes to the race of Isaac Newton you might say the show should be educational and therefore accurate in its depiction of race. But pretty early on, Doctor Who abandoned all pretence of being educational. And more recent attempts at being educational have left us with Jodie Whittaker spouting off a Wikipedia summary about an asteroid. You could also argue that this is a different type of education. A lesson in what it feels like to see your own people played by someone white. Considering Doctor Who’s history of brownface, I’m gonna say y’all need to chill the fuck out. Just go with it.
Tumblr media
My only issue with this scene is much like the issue I had with the Children in Need special. The humour just falls so flat for me. It was a big thud on arrival. From the Kaled anagram sequence to mavity, it just doesn’t work for me. Part of me wonders if this isn’t in part because David Tennant and Catherine Tate were never on set with Nathaniel Curtis. There was no chance of improving with improv. I mentioned last week that some of the representation stuff also felt clunky. It’s weird too because when the show isn’t actively trying to make me laugh or view trans people like myself as valid, it comes off as funny and validating. Sylvia’s tuna masala and or Donna’s love for Rose do such a better job at both, yet they’re the quieter moments of the show thus far. It’s ironic to me that the more powerful moments of the second Davies era have been understated.
It’s easy to write this overstatement off, however. Thinking back to the 50th anniversary special, Clara’s line of turning people into frogs fell flat for me at the time. Now I look back at is as kind of charming. And furthermore, these big events like Children in Need, Christmas, or anniversaries get away with a bit of excess. The humour is more broad because they expect more people to be watching. It’s a time of merriment. It’s also part of why I appreciate “Wild Blue Yonder,” so much. Davies was attempting a weirder “Midnight-esque” episode in the middle of a highly publicised media event. He knew it was a bit of an ask for some audience members. Once again, it feels like an invitation to the rest of the fandom to allow room for exploration. If Doctor Who and the fandom are currently fractured, do we really need to put it back together in the same shape? Does it even need being put back together? Why not just fill the cracks with some seeds and see what grows out of them?
Since “The Star Beast,” aired, I’ve seen some people complaining that the sonic screwdriver has become too OP. Apparently, making sonic barriers is less believable than joining two cut ends of barbed wire. While I do understand that the sonic screwdriver can be a crutch for bad writing, I also understand it to be incredibly cool. Like, I’m sorry, cool beats your need for locked doors any day. If you need absolute realism in what you watch, might I suggest the window? It’s a freaking magic wand, people. Let it be magical. Doctor Who isn’t hard sci-fi. If Doctor Who’s sci-fi were a cheese, it would be brie. It looks hard but it’s gooey at its centre. You can argue that the sonic screwdriver being capable of repairing the TARDIS is too OP, but it’s also the device which removes two major plot conveniences in this episode- the TARDIS and the sonic screwdriver.
Tumblr media
The Doctor and Donna are doing this one without a safety net. They’ve both been pared back to who they are as people. I had a feeling going in that this episode was going to have a smaller cast. It feels like Davies taking a stab at a sort of “Heaven Sent,” narrative that dissects the Doctor and Donna. In other ways it feels like an homage to Davies' own pared-back classic “Midnight,” which has gained cult status as one of his best scripts. In the short stories of Robert Aickman, readers are often left unaware when exactly things get strange. His protagonists walk through their worlds unaware of exactly when things turned hostile until they’re in the thick of it. In the same manner, much of the opening scenes of “Wild Blue Yonder,” leave us waiting for the other shoe to drop, and when it does, you may not notice right away.
Tumblr media
Coming directly off the tonal whiplash of the Isaac Newton scene to a scenario so dangerous that it set off the H.A.D.S. system, it’s nice that the episode eases into its weirdness. The TARDIS’ eerie recitation of the song “Wild Blue Yonder,” echoes through the air with a reminder from Wilf, via Donna, that the song is not a jolly anthem, but a declaration of war. So we sit in the mystery of this gigantic ship sitting at the edge of the universe with its shifting corridors and its slow robot, as we try to ignore the clanking sound just outside the ship. It feels a bit like Doctor Who doing a haunted house in space, but you’re not exactly sure why. It’s Amityville in Space, but good.
With no sonic or TARDIS at his disposal, the Doctor can’t just point his magic wand. Even worse, the Doctor doesn’t even have the benefit of the TARDIS’ translation circuit. Whatever language this civilization uses on their ship, it’s not one of the 57,000,000,205 languages the Doctor can speak. But one language the Doctor can speak is mathematics. The Doctor may not have his tools, but he still has his mind. Deciphering the base ten of this unknown species, the Doctor can begin piecing together what is going on in this ship. Perhaps if he can figure out why an airlock had been jettisoned in the past, it might give a clue to what is happening. If he can remove the threat from the ship, the TARDIS might return. Otherwise, he and Donna could be forever stranded on this ghost ship hovering over nothingness.
Tumblr media
If this ship is haunted, we’re about to meet the ghosts who call this place home. The Not-Things arrive quietly. So quiet that the shot establishing two Doctors and two Donnas in separate rooms initially seemed like a bad edit. When did the two of them get split up? It’s hard to remember. But we’re pretty sure the Doctor who licked the goo on the circuit is the real deal. Tasting things to figure out what they are is a classic Tennant move. The Doctor pretending to have a bad reaction to the goo evoked the Fourth Doctor pretending to go mad with power over the Key to Time. I wonder now if that wasn’t the Doctor testing a theory in the back of his mind because Donna was feeling a bit off. The Doctor has shown in the past that he knows when his companion is compromised in some way. Last week we were given early warning signs that the Doctor was becoming increasingly wary of the Meep.
Tumblr media
Having the characters note a fluctuation in the temperature or the line “My arms are too long,” felt right at home with things like “Don’t blink!” or “Hey, who turned out the lights?” Their visible breath as an omen of ill tidings sits comfortably next to having two shadows or marking your skin to remember the Silence. I love how Doctor Who can turn everyday things like statues, shop dummies, or seeing your breath into danger. Those are the moments for the children hiding behind the sofa. One of Doctor Who’s greatest strengths is its ability to use allegory to help children face real fears. These are the modern equivalent of Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
Tumblr media
For a brief moment, I worried the Not-Things were going to spend the whole episode with Donkey Kong arms. While an effective and trippy visual, it would have started to look goofy after the initial shock had worn off. Watching “Return to Oz,” as an adult, I’m no longer scared of the Wheelers, but as a child they had me covering my eyes. Seeing the Doctor and Donna in these twisted forms was disturbing and creepy. I can see how this episode will stick with younger members of the audience for years. I also imagine it as future fetish fuel, but that’s unavoidable. In the words of Community’s Dean Pelton- “This better not awaken anything in me.”
Tumblr media
Watching the Doctor and Donna drive away from these twisted angry giants reminded me of Leela and K9 fleeing guards in “The Sunmakers,” or even bits from “Terminator 2: Judgement Day.” I also got whiffs of “Sin-Eaters,” from the Titan comics line. While the sharp teeth and asymmetric contortions of the distorted Doctor and Donna do a lot to sell these monsters, it’s the performances of the actors that tip the scale. Other than the times we’re not supposed to know who is who, they feel like different characters. It started tricking my brain into thinking of the Not-Things as completely different actors.
Tumblr media
An issue I have seen come up about the Not-Things is their special effects. If you were worried that the Disney+ money was going to make the show look too polished, worry not. While many of the shots in this episode were very good, and I love the continued use of practical effects, some of the effects of the Not-Things were a bit naff. But much like the Power Rangers effects from the acid ocean scene in “The Halloween Apocalypse,” I found it charming. The only one shot from any of these sequences that I would call bad is the shot of the Not-Thing Doctor with his head between his legs. It should have either been cut or reworked.
Tumblr media
It’s hard to talk about the plot in this story. Mysteries are looming, but for the most part it’s a series of chases punctuated by “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” paranoia. But that isn’t to say that the screen time is wasted. Davies uses this as an opportunity to explore the Doctor’s emotional state after the events of the Flux. Something which hadn’t seemed to affect the Doctor much since the end of “The Vanquishers.”  It’s also interesting to know Davies hasn’t forgotten that half the universe was destroyed by the Flux, as Chibnall seemed to have forgotten immediately after. A friend even texted me today saying how Davies treated the Flux more seriously than Chibnall, and I don’t disagree. I felt like he did a better job explaining what actually happened during the Flux. Perhaps it was bad writing, or perhaps I had already given up hope on the era, but I had no idea that the Flux had anything to do with the Doctor. I’m not even joking. It wasn’t even apparent how much of the universe had been destroyed until last night. I learned more about the Flux from a couple of lines of dialogue than I did from six episodes of “The Flux.”
After the Doctor and Donna suss out who is who, they manage to put a little space between them and the Not-Things first by way of a line of salt and ultimately by a glass door. It was at this point in the episode that I made the strongest connections to “Midnight.” The doppelgangers watching Donna and the Doctor’s every move, reading every thought, to mimic them perfectly was a lot like the creature on the Midnight tour shuttle. In both stories the creatures even reach a point where they begin studying their prey. Noting every minor movement and tic. In both stories, formless creatures are looking to hitch a ride in someone else’s body to wreak untold havoc elsewhere. Because of these similarities, I see this story as a spiritual sequel to “Midnight.” A sort of loving homage to the Tenth Doctor and Donna era.
Tumblr media
The Not-Things dwelled in the vast nothingness at the edge of our universe growing to despise our boiling noisy existence. Like the song “Wild Blue Yonder,” their response to our shouting into the void is a declaration of war. They seemingly hate us for our existence. When the mystery ship arrived, they saw it as a perfect vessel to bring destruction to the universe. The Captain of this ship must have figured this out as it was she who set their demise into motion. Realising that the Not-Things have a harder time mimicking or noticing things that move slowly, the Captain set the ship’s robot on a very slow course to set the ship on self-destruct. She then threw herself out of the airlock to prevent the Not-Things from fully taking her form.
The Doctor and Donna’s discovery of the horselike Captain’s body as the source of the clanging against the ship demands a bit of discussion. In yet another clunky attempt at trans inclusion, the Doctor and Donna try and work out the pronouns of the Captain. The Doctor affirms to Donna that the Captain was a she, but gives no basis as to how he arrived at this conclusion. I find this noteworthy simply because it actually plays into a transphobic meme that says when trans people die, archaeologists will misgender us by our bones. Because by what means did the Doctor know the Captain was a she? He couldn’t even read her language. What if she was the first trans masc horse Captain? Are we really not gonna stan a horse king because of how his bones look? Obviously, I’m taking the piss. But I do feel like this illustrates the responsibility one takes on when they aim toward validating representation. A simple line to clear up how the Doctor knows this would help because otherwise, he’s just guessing with no reasoning to back it up.
Tumblr media
Another weird aspect of this episode was the aforementioned glass door. If I had a quid for every time a Doctor Who 60th anniversary special ended with characters being separated by a glass door in a spaceship, I’d have two quid. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice. Also weird is that this episode marks the second time since we met the Fourteenth Doctor that the TARDIS enters a location by slamming into a wall. The first time being the Children in Need special “Destination: Skaro.” I would say this feels significant, but the TARDIS does land smoothly next to Cyber Dog at the beginning of “The Star Beast.” Another crash landing which could also mean nothing would be the TARDIS slamming into the tree that drops an apple on Isaac Newton’s head. Speaking of meaning nothing, what even was the point of that scene? Was it all to set up the mavity joke and the Doctor’s queerness? Or did it have a greater meaning? If not, they really should have just cut it all together. Perhaps air it as a minisode the day before “Wild Blue Yonder.” As an episode opener, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
After the Doctor almost escapes with the wrong Donna, the TARDIS gets a chance to show off its new ramps by using them to eject Not-Thing Donna like a middle-aged bowling ball. Our little android friend, now sped-up to real-time pushes the destruct button and takes the ship and Not-Things with it, thus finishing the Horse Captain’s brave mission to save the universe. I was sad we never really got to know the little robot. Its design reminded me a bit of Marvin the Paranoid Android from “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” I was ready to love its personality and then mourn its sacrifice. It’s weird that in some ways, the fan theory that we would see twisted versions of the Doctor did come halfway true. Only in this version, there was no evil Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi. It’s been a bit interesting to see the fan theories come so close yet remain so far away.
Tumblr media
Bookending the episode is another scene removed from the main storyline, only this is a book I actually want to read. Returning the TARDIS back to the Cyber Dog location where it was last seen, we get our first glimpse of Wilfred Mott since “The End of Time.” Sadly, it’s also the final time Bernard Cribbins will grace the screen of Doctor Who ever again. This brief cameo was all they were able to film before Cribbins passed away in 2022. I think it’s safe to assume that most of us got a bit teary-eyed seeing ol’ Wilf one last time. As the Fourteenth Doctor said “I loved that man.” I’ve never met a Whovian who didn’t love his character. Seeing Wilf waiting for the Doctor and Donna to return, still believing in the Doctor after all these years, is exactly how you want to remember him. An ever-loyal soldier who doesn’t leave his post. And so shall he never leave our hearts. It was bitter-sweet, but I’m so glad we got to say goodbye.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, this episode kept me engaged throughout its entire runtime. But where it falls short of “Midnight,” is in its inability to create the same level of tension. Perhaps it has to do with the special effects revealing so much under bright lighting. There is less left to our imaginations this time around, and therefore the scares are more on the surface. This doesn’t automatically make them uninteresting, only less engaging. It reminded me at times of the special effects from the new “It,” film series. At times it was creepy and at other times it felt like something from a computer. I’m still deeply interested in the dread the Doctor felt after introducing superstition at the edge of the universe, where the rules of reality are less defined. That seems like a bigger plot point that furthers my belief that RTD plans to continue breaking Doctor Who wide open. If I were to compare the quality of “Wild Blue Yonder,” to previous Doctor Who stories, I would go with “The Idiot’s Lantern,” or maybe “Flatline.” Both of these are episodes I enjoy but they aren’t earth-shattering either. As I said in my “Eve of the 60th” article, I would settle for competent and competent was what we got. I'm still very excited for what's to come.

The Haunted Atlas
Charlton House - Greenwich, London, United Kingdom
51°28′50″N / 0°02′14″E
Former stately home in Greenwich, London, with active haunting phenomena. Now a municipal building, Charlton House has been the site of numerous investigations by paranormal researchers. Some unusual phenomena have been recorded there, including what may be the first "live" apport on film.
Charlton House was built in grand Renaissance style in the early 17th century by Adam Newton, a royal tutor. In 1680, Newton sold the house to Sir William Langhorne, who served as governor of Madras and wanted the house for his retirement. Langhorne lived there until his death in 1715 at age 85. Although he enjoyed women, he never produced an heir. His restless ghost is said to haunt the halls and turn bedroom doorknobs. Another ghost often seen walking on the grounds is that of a servant girl dressed in Jacobean clothing carrying a dead baby in her arms.
Charlton House was turned into a hospital during World War I. One room said by local lore to be the most haunted was left unoccupied until need required that it be opened. The house was severely damaged by bombs during World War II. Repairmen found the mummified body of a child walled in one of the house's chimneys.
The Greenwich Borough Council owns Charlton House, which now serves as a public library and day center. Employees and visitors have reported haunting phenomena, primarily on the third floor, and especially in two rooms known as the Grand Salon and Long Gallery. Other ghosts are an Indian civil servant who likes to pinch the bottoms of women, and phantom rabbits, perhaps due to the fact that a rabbit hutch once was kept in the Long Gallery.
Investigators, including those from the Society for Psychical Research (SPR), the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena (ASSAP) and the Ghost Club, have held vigils there. Unexplained, explosive noises have been recorded, as well as the sudden movement of objects, which appear to be thrown. Mysterious sighs and vague voices have been heard. Cold spots are felt.
Around the end of 1995, an apport manifested during a taping for a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) television show on the paranormal. Participating in the vigil was Maurice Grosse, chairman of the Spontaneous Cases Committee of the SPR, and Les Herbert of the ASSAP. They sat in the Long Gallery with BBC assistant producer Amir Jamal. The room was searched, and the lights were turned off for the vigil. Jamal kept a flashlight in one hand and a camcorder in his other hand.
Sometime after 11 P.M., Grosse, who had closed his eyes, heard a police siren outside, which stopped suddenly. Then a tremendous explosion sounded in the room. Everyone leaped up, and the lights were turned on. In the center of the room was a blue and white teacup, broken into seven pieces that were arranged in a small, near circular fashion, as though someone had laid them out.
No one knew where the cup had come from. The Charlton House staff could not identify the china pattern—the house had only all-white teacups. More puzzling, however, was the manner in which the pieces were neatly arranged on the floor. If the cup had fallen from a height or been thrown, fragments would have been scattered about in wide disarray. Grosse and other investigators attempted to recreate the breakage by throwing teacups of similar size and thickness. They either could not break the cups or succeeded only in smashing them to bits.
The explosive sound was captured on the camcorder footage. An analysis by BBC experts determined that the sound was typical of an explosion, not just of a teacup breaking.
No evidence of hoax was found.
On July 30, 1999, during a vigil by members of the Ghost Club, a loud explosive noise was heard, and a test object, a carved wooden mushroom placed in the rooms by investigators, suddenly flew about 10 feet through the air.
Some investigators have held seances in the haunted rooms and said they made contact with various spirits present.

Former last names: Canon, Wilson, Newton, and Blake-Newton
Deadname: Bethany Lauren
Former chosen names: Blake and Andrew/Drew
Reason for final chosen name: Ancestry family tree found repetition for the name William Saville and I reclaimed it. I ended up finding out a friend of mine from EverQuest II was a cousin of mine because of this choice! Blake was the only part of my former name that I chose for myself, it's what I would have named a son if I could have biological children. Andrew was chosen to honor my daughter Andrea Marjorie Canon that I miscarried at 17 weeks in November 8, 2013 (her father Shawn Gero unalived himself in 2022), and for my step mother who always wanted a daughter named Andrea, so I named my daughter for her. When I lost her, I was devastated. I later chose Andrew, the masculine version of the name, for my daughter and for Cyndi. Newton was my ex Gareth's last name, and I have filed for a fault divorce because he's an incarcerated pedophile that I turned in as soon as I realized what he was. I hope he rots there!
I have survived so much trauma. I want to learn how to live rather than survive but life keeps throwing punches.
I moved to Massachusetts because that's what my ex fiancee and the friend we had staying with us wanted, I was outvoted. My long term goal is moving to the same state as my cousin, for now my home will be Massachusetts and I will make the best out of it. My ex fiancee had two cats when they entered a relationship with me, and they kept both of their cats which is how I went from talking about 4 cats to just the one, Onyx.
I am focusing on moving myself and Onyx into our apartment that we have lined up, just waiting on the housing authority to finalize their paperwork and schedule the inspection, everything that I can do for the apartment has been done and I cannot do anything further except wait. In the meantime, I am raising money towards paying for the hotel(s) so that I don't go back on the streets, and Onyx doesn't have to go back into the shelter.

Homeless shelters won't take me because I'm a "liability" with my seizures, and hospitals won't take me because I'm homeless, they don't care (and I guess don't "need to") about how the streets would lead to my death with my health issues, they aren't a homeless shelter, so they will escort me out with security, even when I am actively having seizures. I'm looking at you Massachusetts General Hospital !!!!!
I plan on running for city council in Cambridge, and helping bring about changes for others with disabilities, so that what happened to me doesn't happen to anyone else. There is no reason someone in a wheelchair should ever have to spend a SINGLE night, let alone 25 nights, on the streets because of their disabilities making them a liability.
Original post below, from when I had to give onyx to the SPCA and deal with the streets alone.

William Cowper (pronounced "Cooper"; b. Berkampstead, Hertfordshire, England, 1731; d. East Dereham, Norfolk, England, 1800) is regarded as one of the best early Romantic poets. To biographers he is also known as "mad Cowper." His literary talents produced some of the finest English hymn texts, but his chronic depression accounts for the somber tone of many of those texts. Educated to become an attorney, Cowper was called to the bar in 1754 but never practiced law. In 1763 he had the opportunity to become a clerk for the House of Lords, but the dread of the required public examination triggered his tendency to depression, and he attempted suicide. His subsequent hospitalization and friendship with Morley and Mary Unwin provided emotional stability, but the periods of severe depression returned. His depression was deepened by a religious bent, which often stressed the wrath of God, and at times Cowper felt that God had predestined him to damnation.
For the last two decades of his life Cowper lived in Olney, where John Newton became his pastor. There he assisted Newton in his pastoral duties, and the two collaborated on the important hymn collection Olney Hymns (1779), to which Cowper contributed sixty-eight hymn texts.

Nora Frances Elizabeth Collyer (1898-1979) pintora canadiense.
Tumblr media

The story of the Extra Regiment's ordinary soldiers: From McCay to Patton [Part 6]
Continued from part 5
The year of 1818
Tumblr media
Map of Mount Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio. Courtesy of Google Maps.
Many of the soldiers whom we know of, were in "reduced circumstances." John McCay was living in Baltimore County, 54 years old, showing he was born in 1764 and wad described as "very poor." All the way across the county, in Mount Pleasant, within Ohio's Jefferson County, William Elkins felt similar pressures. He described himself as 85 years of age, which means he would have been born in 1733 or 47 years old in 1780. More likely he is 63 or 65 years old. In 1818, a person named Marren DuVall, living within Warren Township in Jefferson County, Ohio, [9] said that in 1784 she
resided in Frederick county Maryland, – that the aforenamed William Elkins, in that year[1784] came to the house of my father, William Duvall, a captain of the [Frederick County] militia, who had served two tours of duty in the service of the United States, and that from the frequent conversations, between the said Elkins and my father and other revolutionary soldiers, I sincerely beleive that the said Elkins served more than one year in the United States service – I further testify that I have heard my father and many other Revolutionary soldiers, positively say, that they had known the said Elkins while in the service of his country
Furthermore, his pension noted that he was paid $78.40 for "pay from the First August 1780 to the 1st Jan’y 1782" and $80.00 of pay from Jan. 1, 1782 to Jan. 1, 1783, along with another $43.30 from Jan. 1, 1783 until Nov. 1, 1783 when his military service came to a close.
Reprinted from my History Hermann WordPress blog.
Furthermore, William Groves, living in Allegheny County that year, was 63 years old, meaning he was born in 1755. He said he was in "reduced circumstances" and that he was in "need of the assistance of his country for support." The same was the case for Jesse Boswell. That year he as living in York, South Carolina and asked the "assistance of his country for support." A few years later, he applied for a new pension certificate since the old one was destroyed when his home burned in November 1820.
Tumblr media
Courtesy of Google Maps. York is in northern South Carolina, only 30-36 miles away from Charlotte, North Carolina depending on the route walked.
In 1818, Philip Huston was an "old man." He described himself as "unable to work for my living and besides in extreme poverty so that I need the assistance of my country for support." The same year, the land office of Maryland noted that he was a drummer in the Maryland Line and hence was entitled to "the Lands Westward of Fort Cumberland to Lot No. 402 Containing 50 acres." He never claimed this land as records attest. There were similar circumstances for Thomas Gadd. He argued he was in "reduced circumstances" and needed the "assistance of his country for support" while living in Baltimore. While it is clear that Mr. Thomas Gadd lived in Anne Arundel County in 1810, and moved to Baltimore sometime before 1818, there are two Thomas Gadds within Queen Anne's, Maryland and hence, it is hard to know which one is him.
The Marylanders: John McCay, William Simmons, William Groves, and John Newton in 1820
John McCay was in horrible circumstances. At age 56 in 1820, he was living in Baltimore without any family, was propertyless, and of ill health since he had to quit his occupation as a sailor, only obtaining "a bare subsistence by labouring about the country." His pension further added that he was entered into a Maryland hospital and became "utterly incapable of labour" and needs to assistance of "his country or from private or public charity" due to his circumstances. Since his name is so common, it is not possible to use Federal census records in this instance. Despite that, there are people with his name consistently living in Baltimore from 1790 to 1820, and he is likely among them.
Fellow soldier William Simmons who had been at John McCay's side, was living in Harford County in 1820. At 61 years of age, he only owned $47 dollars with of property. These included one Cow, one young Cow, four pigs, rush bottomed chairs, one pine table, two iron pots, and some trifle of "Crockery ware," among little much more. He also purchased a horse for $20 and horse cart for $10 but neither is paid for and rented about 10 acres of land for $50 per year. His pension further explained that he was married to a thirty-year old woman named Elizabeth (born in 1790), and had three children with her: Joseph (born in 1810), James (born in 1813), and John (born in 1818). He argued that without the state pension he could not support himself since he was "greatly afflicted by Rheumatic pains." Six years later, he had moved to Stark County, Ohio to "improve his situation." Further records of Simmons are unclear.
Then there is William Groves. In 1820, he owned one old Spay Horse, one Cow, one Colt, and one Pot, even less than William Simmons or William Elkins. Living in Allegheny County at 50 years of age, he was a farmer but was "infirm and unable to do more than half work." He lived with his 50-year-old wife, Mary, a son that was 14 years old, and another under age five. Following the census information, it is possible that William lived in Charles County after the war, as the 1790 and 1800 censuses indicate, specifically in Durham Parish, with his family. [10] Furthermore, records indicate he lived in District 4 of Allegheny, Maryland, specifically in Cumberland, Maryland. He was described as an 83-year-old veteran in 1840, meaning this says he was born in 1757, only two years off what he said in 1820, which shows that he was sharp even in his later life, which is impressive. [11] Other parts of his pension indicate that he lived in Allegheny County from 1812 to 1849, with his wife Mary was living there in 1853.
In 1820, the Maryland General Assembly passed a law to pay him for his military service in the Maryland Line. He was to be paid the half pay of a private in "quarterly payments" as the law indicated. [12] He also received land in Western Maryland for his military service. He specifically received lot 1744, which was, at most, 12.7 miles miles away from the Northern branch of the Potomac River, in the middle of Garrett County:
Tumblr media
Using Google Maps, we can pinpoint the location of his land in present-day Garrett County. His land is, by straight shot, 35.5 miles from Cumberland.
Tumblr media
This shows where his lot is in relation to the Potomac River. Black dot is where his lot was. Courtesy of the Library of Congress.
Tumblr media
Zoomed in focus on his lot
Tumblr media
This shows where he lot directly was located, what it looked like on a map.
Hence, he likely did not live on this land as looking at that approximate location shows no evidence of human habitation. There is only the vast expanse of forest and some new, modern houses.
In 1820, John Newton, age 60, was living in Prince George's County.  He was a laborer who would be paid $40 per year for his pension. In his reduced circumstancs, . John Newton: writing he is "reduced circumstances" while writing in Prince George's County in 1818. The census records are no help in this case, as he is not listed. [13] However, there is strong evidence he was living in Maryland that year. This is indicated by the pension list and legislation, although there are other records that must be weeded out. [14] He specifically received pay in 1818 from the state of Maryland for his revolutionary war service. The law which granted him this pay [15] was as follows:
Resolved, That the treasurer of the western shore be and he is hereby authorised, to pay to John Newton, an old soldier, or his order, during his life, a sum of money annually, in half yearly payments, equal to the half pay of a private, for his services during the revolution.
This petition was nothing new. He had petitioned the House of Delegates in 1805 and 1806 on the same issue. [16] In those, he stated he had been wounded in battle, serving from the year 1780 until the end of the war, saying that he was with his wounds,
together with the infirmities of approaching old age, he is rendered incapable of obtaining a maintenance for himself and family
Hence, he received payment at the time, but perhaps he felt it was necessary to apply again because it did not pass the Maryland Senate. It is also worth mentioning that he married Eleanor Callean in May 27, 1781 within Prince George's County. [17]

"BOY, 7, DISCOVERED IN BED BLOOD-SMEARED AND FILTHY," Toronto Star. September 17, 1943. Page 2. ---- Frank Newton, Father, Committed for Trial on Assault Charge ---- TERRIBLE BRUISES --- "A" Police Court, City Hall. Magistrate Menzies. One of the worst cases of alleged assault to be aired in court for some years was outlined when Frank Newton appeared on a charge of assaulting his seven-year-old son, Graham Newton, causing him actual bodily harm.
Accused was prepared to plead guilty, but Crown Attorney McFad- den suggested to court this plea be not accepted and that his worship had the power, after hearing cer- tain evidence, to commit accused for trial.
After hearing evidence of Dr. A. Cooper and Miss K. Mabee, Children's Aid society, Magistrate Menzies sent Newton on for trial in a higher court.
Dr. A. Cooper testified the Newton lad was brought into the Hospital for Sick Children on Sept. 2.
"He was rather badly beaten up." said witness. "He could not see out of his left eye, nor use his left band. and could not walk on account of pain. He was covered in dirt and dry blood from head to toe. There were bruises on every inch of his body, and cuts on his head, upper lip and foot.
"The bruises on his back and abdomen were severe. His left wrist was fractured and is still bothering him. His injuries were extensive and very painful."
In answer to Crown Attorney McFadden, the doctor said the injuries could not be caused by a fall, and that they were consistent with being kicked.
"I was sent to accused's home on Eastern Ave." said Miss Mahee. "I entered the house with a police officer and was ordered out by accused. I told him that as an officer of the Children's Aid society, I had a right to admission if I thought a neglected child or beaten child was in the house. He admitted beating the child because he was a bad boy. We could not find the child for some time. Finally we found him in a bed, naked, covered in blood and filthy. He could not speak or open his eyes. We took the boy to the hospital."
In sending Newton on for trial, his worship said the injuries described were serious and warranted a trial in a higher court.
Without plea or election, William Lake. Hector LeBlanc, alias John Rivers, and Stanley Scrafield, appearing on charges of armed robbery, shooting with intent and other charges, were remanded until Sent. 23. No bail was set.
Charges arose as the result of the robbery of the Bank of Montreal Royce Ave. Sept. 1. when $12549 was taken and the manager, R. Purton, shot at with a machine-gun.
LeBlanc and Lake are also charged with robbing D. Goodman on Aug. 11 of a quantity of jewelry, theft. and Scrafield is charged with receiving some of the jewelry, knowing it to have been stolen. Lake in addition is faring two charges of theft of motor cars, two charges of receiving motor cars and two charges of false pretences in volving about $1,200.
Floyd Robinson admitted having drugs illegally and was sent to jail for, one year and in addition was fined $200 or three months. He was arrested by P.C. Huxley, R.C.M.P. in a house en Shuter St. "When he was searched, a quantity of mor ing phine was found." said P.C. Huxley.
Up for sentence on charges of housebreaking and theft, Russell Madden, who has a record, was given six months on each charge to run concurrently. Mrs. Madden, wife of accused, testified that her husband would not work and that she kicked him out.
In fining Leo Stringer $100 or 30 days for making a false statement while applying for a gasoline A.A. ration book. his worship said: "This is a war measure and we are are fighting for our very existence."
Evidence of Constable Graham, RCMP, was that accused applied for and received an A. A. book on April 2. "On July 2 another person applied for and received an A.A. book for the same car,' said witness. 'On July 27, accused made an application for an A. A. book on the car and swore that he did not have a previous AA. book."
Convicted of stealing a tricycle, Sidney J. Cawley, who has a had record, including similar convictions of bicycle stealing, was sentenced to six months.
YOUTH IS JAILED ---- "B" Police Court, at City Hall, Magistrate Browne. Appearing for sentense on a charge of receiving a club bag and some clothing, Hugh Connelly, 14, of prior good character, was sentenced to a month in jail. The goods had not been recovered.
A month in jail was the penalty given Frank Hansen, a youth, who previously pleaded guilty of theft of a girl's coat from a car at Sunnyside.
Convicted of attempted theft of the car of J. H. Pridham at Sunnyside, Joseph Walker, who had been in prior trouble, was sentenced to six months.
STEALS COAL, JAILED ---- County Police Court, County Buildings. Magistrate Keith. "Shortweight coal is a serious thing said Magistrate Keith in sentencing John Doherty to three months imprisonment on a charge of theft of 950 pounds of coal. Accused pleaded guilty of attempted theft.
Sergt. Turner. York township police, said accused was instructed to deliver to a Mr. Marks. "He delivered part of the coal to a woman he met in a restaurant," he testified. The woman had ordered the coal from him rather than through the proper channels.
Crown Counsel Guardhouse read accused's record.
Up for sentence on a charge of stealing a bicycle from Brian McGillvery, Bruce Sheppard received a suspended sentence, with a warning.
Alexander Lamont, an employee of the DeHavilland plant, pleaded not guilty of making statements likely to prejudice recruiting and likely to cause disaffection among his majesty's subjects. John E. Archibald, another employee, testified that last spring while in a washroom with other men he had heard a man make remarks about Downing St. and Canadian soldiers overseas.
"I am pretty nearly sure Lamont is the man who made the statements witness said. "I don't know anybody else who looks like him Archibald said he was five or six feet from the man when the statements were made.:
As another witness failed to appear and a bench warrant was requested, the case was adjourned.

Here are a couple of honourary mentions which didn't fit into my three TED Talks haha
First, these two photos of Jacques & Gabriella of Monaco. Not sure what's going on, I just know that it's very on-brand for the Monaco royals
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second, I was gonna say that this could serve as inspo for Newton. But that felt like a bit of an insult towards the main character of season 2. Anywho, the Thai royals have way too much money but at least Siri offers entertainment in how much she spoils her dog
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Third, we have my favourite royal, His Royal Cuteness Prince Charles of Luxembourg. The hardest-working baby in the world who's about to become a big brother next year! No real reason, I just want everyone to see how adorable he is

For those wondering, His Royal Cuteness together with Prince Alexander have been cast by me as Charlie (yes I know they look very different, never said my casting was gonna be logical), Prince Gabriel as Alex (let's pretend Alex was blonde the first couple of years) & now when we have better photos of Prince Julian, I have an excuse to picture him as Will. Haven't decided on anyone for Eddie, Miles, Mary & Vivi yet, suggestions are welcome! But, I nominate Princess Adrienne as Lottie.
Jacques and Gabriella of Monaco are definitely giving cheeky Prince Gregory and Princess Hyacinth vibes, though I could also imagine Princess Charlotte and Prince William having the sassy little troublemakers look about them. In the Royals AU they were born hours apart in the same hospital with their fathers running out into the corridor of opposite rooms to high-five each other when they were welcomed into the world. It would have been the only time Sophie had presented one of her newborns to the world, knowing there would be no chance of sneaking out of the hospital with the media camped outside waiting to be introduced to the new Princess Royal. She had found the prospect of the media interest invasive and had opted not to parade Charlie and Alex around hours after giving birth to them as a result, but seeing as William was her third baby and she didn't feel as overwhelmed as she had done as a brand new mother, she reckoned she could handle showing one of her babies to the world just this once. Then when Kate hopped into the hospital bed with her as they snuggled their newborns, she asked if Sophie would like to appear on the steps of the hospital with her and show their babies off together, and realising she wouldn't have to do it alone made Sophie agree to the offer instantly. She even had a bit of fun as Kate's glam squad dressed and made her up side by side with the queen while their royal husbands doted on their infants, before they treated the public to the four of them appearing on the steps of the hospital to introduce the newest little prince and princess of the family.
I could definitely see Newton ending up as the main star of the royal family's Instagram account. He's included in photos for Kate and Anthony's engagement, their wedding, pregnancy announcements, first baby pics, and of course their official Christmas cards. When they meet members of the public Kate and Anthony are always asked about Newton and the general demand of more Newton leads the royal family Insta stories to be filled with the corgi's day to day activities and general fluffy cuteness. (There's even a joke petition to make Newton the national animal of the country or for him to at least be knighted for his adorable services to the nation.)
Prince Charles of Luxembourg is the cutest!!! I can for sure see him as baby Charlie and while Benedict is thrilled that his hair initially appears blonde like his mother, Sophie is sure his locks will darken to the chestnut that the rest of the Bridgertons possess and much to Benedict's chagrin she's right. I can also totally see (your logic of) Prince Alexander as a bigger version of Charlie, with Charlie not wanting his hair cut so he can look just like his father (I'm envisioning Benedict growing his hair out for a time after Sophie one day mused that she fancied him when he was younger with his teenage floppy hair, and being the simp that he is he wanted to make his wife's teenage dreams come true).

I'm a disabled, autistic gamer, inventor, and writer.
Working on a book series called A Tikevatian Odyssey (6 books) and inventing a board game called Killer In The Keep (a TTRPG Murder Mystery board game)
I am a cat dad to #LordOnyxBlepman who is currently temporarily with SPCA while I work on my housing quickly (I'm in a hospital) and I unfortunately have had to permanently rehome Tiggy 😭
I am a designer in EverQuest II on the Halls Of Fate Server (main toon is Kweerakyn)
Former Facebook blogger

I am now single. I don't want to talk about it. My ex Jasper and I undoubtedly have our own versions how it ended. But to me it feels like they emotionally left me a long time ago and have been shoving me verbally and emotionally until I was the one to end things. Especially during the 4 days I was on the literal streets and they were upset that I was sending group messages before private ones, because I was unsure about my battery power and knew they were in those groups chats. I'm sure that's not their version. That's fine. But I don't want to talk more about it because right now I am focusing on getting an apartment for myself and Onyx and getting him back into my arms and us back to stability.
