The trouble with writing about a character unlearning bigotry is that you don't want it to come off as heavy handed and melodramatic, and you also don't want it to come off as unearned and arbitrary, but all my real-life experience with unlearning bigotry has either been "oh my god someone I care about is this thing I've always looked down on how could I have been so wrong" or "huh, for some reason I just realized that this thing I've been saying is mean and probably not true. better not say it anymore!" And I really don't know where to go with that!
