Sam gets called in for a mission at some ungodly hour of the morning but three steps out the door Rhodey calls him again saying their intel was wrong and sorry for waking him up. Which is all fine but now Sam is wide awake and its too dark to go running so he crawls back in bed on top of one very sleepy Bucky Barnes. Just a very chipper Sam bugging a very sleepy Bucky with kisses and snuggles and talking about nothing important. And Bucky tries, he tries so hard, to go back to sleep but Sam is relentless. Bucky is all groans and grumbles, he even tries rolling over and sleeping on top of Sam to get him to quit movin’ around. But that doesn’t work cause Sam’s giggling so much underneath him. This goes on for a ludicrous amount of time. Sam will be quiet for just long enough that Bucky thinks he’s finally gonna get some sleep and then Sam pipes up with a silly bird fact or just sticks his nose in Bucky’s ear. Truly it’s a valiant effort from Bucky but eventually his grumbles turn into smiles turn into giggles cause he can’t resist Sam. When finally Bucky admits defeat and says he’s awake, Sam says he just wanted to tell Bucky he didn’t have a mission today after all. And then Sam has the audacity to roll over and pretend to go to sleep after all that and Bucky’s not having it.

For a moment there I got stuck thinking about how Bucky would love more than anything to be up with Sam while he gets ready for the mission, just to be there and to offer whatever support he has. And at first he used to. He used to wake up at the worst hours right along with Sam, used to watch him wear the suit and offer a flirtatious compliment here and there. He used to walk Sam right to whatever his ride that day was, kiss him deeply and say "you better come back to me safe" And even though his grip was always too tight and sometimes Sam really believed he wouldn't, and he really didn't want to, he would always let go. But they both soon realized this couldn't go on, because when Bucky got back inside, he didn't go back to bed. It didn't matter if it was 3 am, he wasn't falling asleep. He wasn't going to do anything actually. His mind kept running the worst possible scenarios, tormenting him with the what ifs until he saw Sam walk through that door in one piece.

So they come up with a different routine. Sam would get up alone, kiss a peacefully sleeping Bucky on the cheek and right before he walks out the door, "come. home. safe," Bucky mumbles sleepily. Later, he wakes up alone, goes about his day like nothing is wrong, until he sees that front door open and he can finally release the breath he's been holding all day.

(oops that got a little bit angsty, back to our regularly scheduled fluff)

So when this one time Sam doesn't actually go on a mission, he tries waking Bucky up in the most ludicrous of ways. And maybe he succeeds sooner than he realizes. Maybe Bucky does wake up, but Sam's snuggling next to him, talking about the latest shenanigans the baby Avengers got into, and Bucky's feeling too cozy to get up, so he pretends to stay asleep just for a few more minutes.

But when he finally feels ready to get up, Sam decides he needs to sleep now. Bucky of course doesn't allow this to happen. He throws Sam over his shoulder (no, Sam doesn't yelp, why would you ask that?) and sits him at the kitchen counter, so he can continue telling his stories, while Bucky makes them both breakfast.

And Bucky goes about his day as normal, but this time he isn't holding his breath like he's used to doing. Because this time that little piece of his heart didn't walk out the door, headed for battle. It's right there next to him.

god, i miss writing but i am under some pretty solid stress right now and my response to stress is often to just shut down in a lot of ways which isn't helpful but it tends to be what i do. i'm starting to pick up writing again, though, so hopefully we'll get back to our regularly scheduled shenanigans soon. but i just feel bad about it lmao. i miss writing and i just want to get back to it.

Death Note: The Glorious Manga Ending (And the anime that failed to deliver)

Well, this is certainly something a tad different from my usual affairs. Yes, I'm delighted to bear the news that I am taking a break from writing sub-par fanfiction and selling weapons to Middle Eastern terrorists in order to follow something a little less creative, but more immediately interesting to me in my current time of writing. I mean, hell, there's probably a 60% chance that no one will ever read this, since I'll likely drop it halfway through and go back to my black market dealings. But, in that small 40% chance that I do get this out the door, or indeed any further than this very sentence before I forget about it for all eternity, then I want to have a little discussion, a fun little analysis. And of course, I'm going to analyse everyone's favourite slice of life fluff comedy, Death Note. Specifically the ending and how I think the manga surpasses the anime in many, many ways.

If you haven't yet read or watched Death Note, then you won't be reading this anyway, so it would be rather pointless at best and an insult to your intelligence at worst to give a recap of how the series works. If you must have a layman's explanation, big murder book gets dropped into the human world, shenanigans ensue. There, now go watch or read it for yourself. Preferably read, as I am about to discuss. The manga is far better, entirely because of the second half. It's no secret that the Death Note anime handled the second half poorly. Content was cut, elements were skipped, scenes were changed entirely and Near, my favourite character from the manga, was done so dirty that he generally ranks as many people's least favourite, for some understandable reasons and others that I consider rather weak. But the main part of the second half aside, I want to talk about the final showdown, the confrontation in the Yellow Box warehouse, and how I feel the anime adaptation butchered a near-perfect ending for the sake of either time, or budget, or maybe to appease Light fangirls (because that definitely has a factor in why I don't like the anime's ending as much.)

So, to recap, most of the confrontation at the warehouse between the SPK and Kira plays out very much the same. Mikami writes the names down, Light reveals himself, the notebook is revealed to be a fake and Yagami has his famous mental breakdown, followed by one of the most powerful lines in the series:

I love this speech. I think it's one of the best in the series, for reasons that very much tie into why the ending in the manga works better. I want you all to think for a moment; I've seen a lot of people say Death Note is a series that doesn't take sides on the conflict. No, that is bullshit. In the early series, maybe, but from the moment Light Yagami killed Naomi Misora, and arguably even earlier than that with Raye Pembre, he was consistently portrayed as being more and more callous, more evil, more of a scumbag. Let's look over what he did, especially in the later stages of the series.

He:

Murdered the FBI agents tailing him.

Only expressed regret over Utika's death because it may negatively affect Kira's reputation.

Watched with no emotion as his father died and indeed, encouraged him to use the Death Note moments before he died.

Mocked Matsuda for mourning his father's death.

Manipulated two seperate women into doing his bidding (albeit, one was unintentional) and killed one himself, with plans to kill the other had he not been killed.

Instigated a riot in New York with the intent of killing Near and the SPK.

Killed FBI agents who were tailing him.

Only cared about Utika's death because it compromised Kira's strong public image and not because he was actually a good man.

Manipulated two seperate women into falling for him (albeit one was accidental) and promptly killed off one with no hesitation, with plans of killing the other had he not met his end first.

Watched emotionless as his own father died and even tried to get him to use the Death Note in his last moments.

Mocked Matsuda for mourning the death of his father and used it in a last ditch effort to distract the detective and escape.

Staged a riot with the intent of killing Near and the rest of the SPK.

And these are just some of them. By the end of Death Note, Light was not a good person. I personally never agreed with him, but he went from a disillusioned kid with a minor saviour complex to A full-blown, sadistic, perverted image of what he used to be, utterly unfeeling and cold-hearted, with a major God complex, a complete lunatic. As Near said, a mass murderer and nothing more. After everything Yagami's done over the course of the series, it was just too satisfying to read this for the first time, and I will concede, the anime did a great job adapting it. I feel a lot of Light fangirls agreed with him because his ideals sounded good on paper, but in reality, they're completely childish and self-serving. I am not one to moral grandstand, I believe those who take any excuse to give lectures about morality are annoying and often hypocritical scum, but my point here is that this is not a man any reasonable person could agree with if he were a real person. So, this teardown of his ego was perfect.

Now, the first big difference is the ultimate fate of Teru Mikami. In the anime, he kills himself in the warehouse, in a scene that makes me laugh every time due to the comically large quantities of blood spewing from him. He dies defending Kira's ideals, believing in his God. Or, if you choose to interpret it another way, he has accepted that Light is not God, and he has nothing else to live for. Either way, the anime lacks a key scene, after Light is shot by Matsuda and begging for help:

This is extremely important, as it continues what Near did with his speech and sets in motion the following trend for what is to come. Light is humiliated, his second most faithful pawn has turned against him, called him scum, seen him for what he truly is, and worse still, he's done it in front of everyone else. Teru Mikami has denounced his God, and this is just the stepping stone for the humiliation Kira is about to suffer. Also, it's worth noting that just before Mikami denounces Kira, there's a scene of Light crawling on the ground, bleeding, calling out for Misa and Takada to help him, seeming to have gone totally delusional, forgetting that Takada was already dead. This may have been excluded from the anime, or it may have been the fault of the subs I was using. It still serves as a vital part of the theme that the final few chapters hammer in, over and over again, that being the complete and total humiliation of Light Yagami. And the worst for our criminal-killing protagonist is still to come.

Finally, we reach the fate of the original Kira, the end of Light Yagami. In the anime, he uses Mikami's suicide as a distraction to escape, wherein he runs off, seeing visions of his past self, and dies out in the middle of a staircase, from a heart attack delivered by Ryuuk, calmly and quietly. This is all very nice and emotional, we see for a moment, Light contemplates what he became and wondering how it could have ended differently, and him dying in the middle of the staircase, as many people have stated before, is oh so very symbolic of how he finds himself unable to reach Heaven or Hell. However, this does not hold a candle to the manga.

This is what Light is like upon his death there:

Yeah, there's no real doubting it, he's going out like a complete bitch. Like the anime was thoughtful and silent, with an underlying sombre soundtrack, in this the once great Kira is reduced to a blubbering mess, throwing a tantrum because he refuses to accept his time is up. It was made very clear to him at the beginning that he was to die at Ryuuk's hand one day and now that it's here, he can't take it. He tries to cheat death, the one thing no human nor Shinigami can do. I mean, just look at the panels. He's a mess. A privileged, pampered brat who isn't getting his way. That is why I consider the Death Note manga ending to be superior to the anime in almost every way. While the anime gives us symbolism and a sense of calm, the manga goes all the way in tearing down this character, who has been a piece of human garbage for years at this point. I find it so satisfying to watch him get what he deserves, not only the death but the shame.

Light's own hubris and mental instability stole from him the honourable death he received in the anime. And that is everything I believe he needed, far more than the mere reality check he was given in the anime.

Wrestle Grand Slam preview

Originally New Japan Pro Wrestling was going to do two big stadium shows in May. I'm guessing the strategy was to keep fans socially distanced, but book bigger buildings so they could sell more tickets. Unfortunately Japan had another surge in COVID-19 cases, and another state of emergency was declared. New Japan ultimately canceled the Yokohama show and postponed this one, in the Tokyo Dome, to July 25. Unfortunately, with the pandemic going the way it is in Japan, the government has probably limited the number of people who can attend, and New Japan is probably taking a bath on this show no matter what.

But that's not our problem. All you need to know is that you can stream the show live at 3am EDT, Sunday morning, July 25. You can stream it on NJPW World (about $9.05 US per month). Or if you don't want the hassle of subscribing to a Japanese service, you can get the show for $19.99 on Fite.tv. Both services will provide English commentary, and both of them let you watch it later on-demand (in case you don't want to be up all night).

Shingo Takagi vs. Kota Ibushi (maybe) - Shingo is the 3rd IWGP world heavyweight champion, and he's making his first defense of the title. As of this writing Ibushi is still the advertised challenger, despite missing several recent shows due to a case of aspirational pneumonia. Hopefully the time off has allowed him to recover. If he's forced to pull out, I'm beginning to think New Japan will not announce that until the start of the show.

The main event of this show has been cursed for months. Originally, Will Ospreay beat Ibushi for the title and Takagi in his first defense, to set up Ospreay vs. Kazuchika Okada on May 29 in the Tokyo Dome. Then Ospreay went home with a neck injury, and Okada caught COVID-19, and the show was postponed. So Okada faced Takagi for the vacant title on June 7, and after Takagi won he challenged Ibushi to face him on the "biggest stage" possible. Then the Tokyo Dome show was rescheduled, with the unfortunate main event of "two guys Ospreay just beat." Now Ibushi has pneumonia, and if there's going to be replacement there will be zero time to set it up.

Under normal circumstances, this match headlining a big show would be a real treat. It won't be as fun if I'm worried about Ibushi's cardio. I know the running gag is that everybody thinks Ibushi is superhuman, because he looks ten years younger than he is and he falls on his neck and acts like it's no big deal. But dude. I mean, if he shows up at this show ripped to shreds and ready to go, it'll be great and play into the myth. But I can't imagine he'll be 100%.

At last night's New Japan show, Hiroshi Tanahashi said he's ready to take Ibushi's place if needed. That's as close as anyone has come to being positioned as a replacement. Honestly, that's not a bad consolation prize, and Shingo-Tana even has a ready-made instant storyline. (Tanahashi beat Shingo for the NEVER title a few months ago, so he's a logical challenger for Shingo's world title now.)

A title change would be pretty wild right about now, but I think this new world title has bounced around too much as it is. We need stability, and we need a champion who can weather these difficult times. My man Shingo can do it.

Tetsuya Naito & SANADA vs. Zack Sabre Jr. & Taichi - Naito and Sabre won the IWGP heavyweight tag team title from Dangerous Tekkers on July 11, so this is the rematch.

I really don't understand why you'd book the Tekkers to chase Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa for six months just to immediately pull the belts back off of them, especially if you're just going to do an immediate rematch. Makes no sense. Whichever team loses here is going to look kind of pathetic, to the point that I'm wondering if you have to start teasing a breakup angle. But it's New Japan, so I don't think they'd jump right into that sort of thing.

My preference is to see one of these two teams defend the title more than once against various teams. I don't care which of them does it, but the other needs to go to the back of the line. That would be pretty disastrous for Dangerous Tekkers, so I guess I'm rooting for them to regain the belts and get back on track.

Kazuchika Okada vs. Jeff Cobb - With Will Ospreay out of action, Okada is stuck feuding with one of Ospreay's henchmen in the United Empire. That's not a knock on Cobb, who's strong as hell and super cool. But it's like one of those He-Man episodes where he just fights Mer-Man, because Skeletor is out of town or something. Mer-Man is dope as hell, but nobody thinks he's gonna beat He-Man on Skeletor's day off. With that said, it'd be mighty cool if Cobb scored a huge upset to set him up as a key player in the main event scene.

El Desperado vs. Robbie Eagles - Despy had just finished a grueling defense of the IWGP junior heavyweight title against Taiji Ishimori when Eagles announced he was next in line for a title shot.

Eagles, an Australian, has been pretty scarce since the pandemic began. He did compete in December's Best of the Super Jr. tournament, but even so it's a special event to get to see him. Even so, Eagles is not exactly a dominant force in New Japan's junior division, and I'm not expecting him to be a major threat to Desperado here. With Hiromu Takahashi cleared to compete, the money is in setting up Hiromu-Despy for the title. I don't see Eagles figuring into that picture, so he should take the L.

El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori vs. Ryusuke Taguchi & Rocky Romero - ELP and Ishimori are defending the IWGP junior heavyweight tag team title. Taguchi is the coach of his not-quite-a-real-thing group, Taguchi Japan, and Romero coaches Roppongi 3K, so together they are the Mega Coaches. I like the Mega Coaches but they're going to lose hard here.

New Japan Ranbo - This is a gauntlet battle royale for possession of Toru Yano's KOPW 2021 trophy. Two wrestlers will start the match and each additional participant will enter at regularly-scheduled intervals. Participants can be eliminated at any time. Once everyone has entered the match, and all but one has been eliminated, the remaining entrant is declared the winner and win the trophy.

Normally in a New Japan Ranbo match, eliminations occur via pinfall, submission, or exiting the ring over the top rope. But since this is a KOPW match, added stipulations were proposed for the fans to vote on. The winning stipulation is that handcuffs will be placed around the ring, and you can eliminate an opponent by handcuffing him to something. I suspect this rule has not been thought through, and some weird edge cases will come up during the action. In layman's terms, this will be a wacky shit show with crazy shenanigans. I'm looking forward to it.

No participants have been announced except for Yano. I would expect a bunch of the older guys and prelim guys will show up, and maybe some wrestlers we haven't been seeing lately. But this isn't a Royal Rumble, or even a Battle Riot or a Casino Battle Royale, so I wouldn't hold my breath for any earth-shattering surprises. Anyone could win, but at this point Yano is to the KOPW trophy what R-Truth is to the WWE 24/7 title. The winner of this match is either going to be Yano or be losing to Yano very soon.

“You dare invoke the wrath of the Rosalind de la Vega?” I roll the Rs in my name so they sound like someone’s pulling the ignition on my mom’s car. “What fools you mortals be!” After a 90 minute english class where we’d delved deep into the core of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the urge to speak in Iambic Pentameter and quote Shakespeare has been on all of our backs. Considering that none of us are master playwrights, by any means, the things coming out of our mouths aren’t exactly all that impressive. In fact, I imagine the National English Society, if there is one, is on their way to throw us into jail for torturing the public. Or entertaining them. You choose.

Essie tacks “th”s onto every second word in her sentences and calls it a day, and Atlas tries his best but he’s too busy staring at her like she hung the moon, the sun and the stars in the sky to contribute anything, but I can’t keep myself from swiping a ruler from a nearby student’s lunch-table and brandishing it at Carter.

“I’m never getting that back am I?” The dude says, turning to his friend.

Yes. Maybe. Probably not, no.

To his credit, Carter plays along, falling to his knees. My skirt swirls across my thighs as I jump onto the bench beside him, allowing the ruler to grab him by the chin and lift his eyes to me. “There is no fight to be won here.”

I glance up, but only a handful of eyes are on us. The rest of everyone else rolls their eyes and goes back to their regularly scheduled programming. Which isn’t surprising, considering these sort of shenanigans are a regular part of our dynamic as a group. Last month, Atlas had grabbed Essie in the middle of the cafeteria line and swung her around like a yoyo gone rogue, while she was waiting for her caesar salad, effectively pissing off everyone behind her, the cafeteria ladies who’d probably spat in her food afterwards, and –– even though she was only pretending to be mad about it through shrieks and peals of laughter –– Essie too. I’m convinced if any of us died some day soon, not a single person in our school would bother to show up. I can’t blame them, though, if I wasn’t a part of our fun, I’d hate me too.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s a bad thing that we’re all so close. If we rely on each-other too much. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I’ve never needed more than a few close friends. The smaller the group, the better! In music, big bands don’t ever seem to last. It’s the ones with the tightest bonds that make the biggest waves, that stay strong through it all.

And us four? We’re going to stay strong forever.
