Friday, December 15: U.D.O., "Tongue Reaper"

Three years between albums would be perfectly acceptable for most acts, but the gap between Decadent and Steelfactory was an eternity by Udo Dirkschneider’s standards.  Sure, there were the usual requisite lineup changes, but that never stopped the Udo Dirkschneider Organization in the past, and even the intermittent gigs playing as “Dirkschneider” and only doing Accept songs shouldn’t have taken that much time away from the endlessly prolific U.D.O., and it wasn’t like Steelfactory was any different from most of their other records.  It turned out that the album was the end of an era, as longtime bassist, co-writer and musical director Fitty Wienhold departed shortly before its release, and it would actually be a bit before U.D.O. would come up with something as ferocious as opening track “Tongue Reaper”: the title and lyrics were complete nonsense as usual, but Dirkschneider bawled and screeched with added conviction over semi-robotic bashing and crunching guitars and drums.  It was of a piece with previous Wienhold-led numbers like “Steelhammer”, “Speeder” and “Decadent” and stayed firmly in U.D.O.’s lane, so as such it was effective on its own terms even as it hewed so closely to formula as to essentially come out of an assembly line (or rather, out of some kind of "steel factory").  “Tongue Reaper” was part of the push to make the group faster and nastier than the mid-paced hard rock that Stefan Kaufmann shepherded earlier in the ‘00s, and reminded that this was first and foremost a heavy metal act, even if not a very imaginative one outside of its frontman’s penchant for garbled and insane wordsmithing.

Monday, December 26: U.D.O., “House of Fake”

Decadent found U.D.O. doubling down on the aggression of Steelhammer: with Fitty Wienhold maintaining his role as musical director, Udo Dirkschneider went full-throttle once more and delivered a collection of bangers that largely kept pace with what his former bandmates in Accept were concurrently doing. “House of Fake” indeed recalled prime Accept, even with Dirkschneider’s more wizened screeching, as the guitars chugged and grooved over Francesco Jovino’s steady drumming.  The track maintained the pummeling quality that permeated this particular run of U.D.O. albums, and while it by no means reinvented the wheel or even felt like essential Dirkschneider, it was thoroughly enjoyable throughout its runtime and stood on its own as well-crafted traditional German heavy metal.
