SUBLIME CINEMA #677 - SECONDS
John Frankenheimer had a strange career, with ups and lags, success and a lot of hired gun television work, which is now mostly ignored. He found the most success in the 1960's, as a go-to-director for some great political or paranoid thrillers; he was so reliable to studios that he replaced Arthur Penn after three days on 'the Train', and got a Ferrari out of the deal.
Seconds is my favorite. The look is pure disorientation. The cinematography is so expressive, the lenses so wide it makes a Clockwork Orange look like it was shot for TV.

I love Meet You At The Blossom
This is Jin Xiaobao.
He's a rich, spoiled, sheltered young master looking for a wife to pamper, even though he's terrible at it. He thinks he's living some sort of love-at-first-sight/fated love romance.
Tumblr media
This is Zhongzheng Huaien.
He's trying to help his father get his throne back, with very little considerations for motivations, morals or casualties. He thinks he's living a palace conspiracy story, which includes spying and stealing, intra-familial murder attempt, cross-dressing, and a lot of fighting.
Tumblr media
And this is them getting thrown together into a high-heat (enemies-to-lovers?) gay epic that none of them were expecting nor are ready for.
Tumblr media
It's going to be a fun ride!

In just under 20 days, I am flying to Western Australia to see a solar eclipse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because it's so dangerous to look at the sun directly, I've been trying out sun viewing equipment.
Got to find something that won't give me a headache, or worse, damage my eyes.
I got these specialised eclipse binoculars a while ago. They're celestron, a mostly respected brand, and have all the right certifications. They are second hand though.
Tumblr media
I feel fine after using them, if a little dazzled - sunlight gets in around the sides . I plan to 3d print something to go around them to block that, which hopefully will make them fine to use.
I have since found out that they're only supposed to be used when an eclipse is nearly at totality. So if you're using some yourself, please do your own research rathet than going of just this post
Even then, I'd like a second option.
This is an Aliexpress solar filter designed for my telescope. I don't trust it on the telescope.
Tumblr media
Even holding it up to the sun while wearing sunglasses - (despite my eyes collecting a thousandish times less light than the telescope) - after a short time I feel like I've been at the beach all day without sunglasses.
I will not be bringing this to Exmouth.
Next up is the cheap, but more legit cardboard solar glasses from the astronomy shop in the city:
Tumblr media
These use the same baader film tech as the filter above.
Despite being from a reputable source, these still feel too bright, and make my eyes feel funny. Even when combined with sunnies.
Just today, this arrived:
Tumblr media
This is a pair of shade 14 welding glass lenses - nasa recommended, and the darkest ones I could get my hands on.
They're perfect.
They turn the sun into a much fainter greenish yellow ball.
Tumblr media
It is soooo much easier on the eyes than any of the tools I tried above.
Now what I need to do is go and make something to use them in

One from the vaults! [April 2021] Mary and her light-sensitive spectacles, which were a real life-changer for her when they became publically available. She'll still frown a bit when it's very bright out, though, just out of habit.

Candy - Happy Wife Happy Life (S01E02)
First & second shots: What should be a happy, celebratory moment actually feels miserable and lonely. The dark space, ugly yellow, empty space (exaggerated by the use of a wide lense) and the underwhelming sign create a huge contrast with what's happening story wise. You can truly feel how miserable and lonely life felt for Betty.
Third shot: I love the blocking in this shot. Betty's surrounded by people, however, she's lonely and feels completely ignored by both her family and the women she wants to befriend. She's contemplating approaching said women but feels small and vulnerable.
Fourth shot: A frame within a frame so we can keep the focus on Betty, as always, lonely and emotionally dependent on her husband. She's completely isolated from her kids and everyone else in the town. A depressed and overwhelmed woman with absolutely no support, not even from the man she's trying to talk to.
Fifth shot: I absolutely love the lighting in this scene. It's colorful and fun, the exact opposite of Betty's life. Candy also feels trapped in her own marriage, but here, she's learning about a world full of possibilities and the fun she's so desperate for. Just like with Betty, the lense used here allows us to see lots of space around her. However, the composition is different. She's not isolated and in a corner, like Betty's usually seen (or even Candy herself, while she's at home). The lines and contrast between the red and green here make Candy and her friends the center of attention.
