Inktober day 2
Discover, Jacquelyn Block Today the Inktober prompt was ‘discover.’ walking with my son in the mornings we always are looking out for our slug friends who are enjoying the cooler, damp fall mornings we’ve been having. Today for my photo-a-day for the American Cancer Society challenge was a wide angle shot of our friendly neighborhood slug. This ended up inspiring my sketch of my son discovering…

I also really liked the bit where Tango just kind of appears, tells Skizz off, and disappears. I think the implication is that he’s some sort of mental representation of what it means to be a hermit or like. Skizz’s conscience? And I think that’s really interesting

Sunbae, something's bothering me again. But it's bothering me so much that I have a lot on my mind. So it's gotten complicated now. So I'm going to be myself and keep it simple. Let me ask you a simple question. Do you like me, sunbae? Why don't you give me a simple answer? Do you like me, Eun Jae Won? Yes.

was absolutely agonizing over which movie to start the year with bc i didn't want it to be horror like every movie i've seen for the last 3 months so i decided to commit to something i've been meaning to do anyway, watching all Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki films. bc i haven't seen any of them. or know anything about any of them. other than that people love them.
anyway, so i'm starting from the beginning (well, as far back as i can start anyway, i'm not tracking down the shows Hayao Miyazaki has worked on) and currently i'm a little under 10 minutes into Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) and the image of Lupin cranking his belt mechanism as they slowly descend is absolutely cracking me up

(you are a fever I am learning to live with, and everything is happening at the wrong end of a very long tunnel)

ok i've slept. I'm thinking about "the handmaiden". i logged it on my letterboxd and i saw some folks being like ~waah ~ "the male gaze" and like...maybe I'm just CLUELESS but it seemed to me that the entire film was a deconstruction + critique of the male gaze.
like, yeah in the first part of the movie (part 1), I can agree that we get some male-gazey focused POV shots. Sure. But that's sort of the point of it all, since our narrative is limited by Sookhee's perspective and, by the time the movie switches to Part 2 and 3, it's Hideko and Sookhee who have full narrative control, who are able to express their agency/love for one another, and ultimately gain their freedom.
I don't know much about film, but the camera presence is everything. When we have up close shots, we are "in" that character's head, we are unaware of the environment (or it's just not as important) versus when we have wide shots that encompass the whole scene and now we are 'viewers' - but that doesn't inherently make the scenes fetishized or perverted.
I mean, Park Chan-wook literally talks about it (x):
"for a filmmaker who is trying to make a film about the violence of male gaze, and to make a movie that is a criticism of these kinds of violent male gaze, really, how careful we have been and how much thought we have put into designing these scenes of Hideko, who’s been the subject of such violent male gaze all her life. When she finds her true love and has this moment of love, and makes love, how careful would I have been not to make that moment yet another object of voyeuristic male gaze?"
like !!! and I'm not even touching upon the fact that the character, Hideko, has only experienced sex through a male lens and has been subjected to abuse for her whole life. ANYWAY. This is getting entirely too long.
