I think one reason the twins feel so awful is they're like every worst older sibling instinct indulged. I hate them so much in this latest page with Ben and Mal but I think partially because I recognise the 'wind-up / belittle younger sibling in front of their friends' urge from myself when I was a kid and it's very ugly! And I literally love my little siblings so much and would still want to be a dick to them sometimes. These guys don't even seem to like Ben at all and that's another big difference between their annoying overbearing rude ways and Vee's.

First off your username is a whole ass mood, also, could I request a fic with Klaus Baudelaire? Their on the Qeequeg and reader gets jealous of Fiona and her flirting with klaus. I’m a whore for Klaus Baudelaire
Guess (Klaus Baudelaire X GN!Reader)
Masterlist
Request Something!
Summary: Y/n has been with the Baudelaires since they showed up on Monty’s doorstep. When they board the Queequeg, Y/n can’t help the jealousy overcome when Fiona gets a little too close to Klaus.
A/N: I can’t remember the exact plot of the grim grotto, so in this they’re all just kinda hanging out on the Queequeg ig lol
***
If you had asked Y/n L/n where they saw themself in a few months, they wouldn’t have guessed all the unfortunate events they and the Baudelaires had experienced. Bouncing from guardian to guardian, only tagging along with the Baudelaires because the late Dr. Montgomery Montgomery, their own guardian, was tragically murdered and coincidentally wanted Y/n to be taken care of by the also late Josephine Anwhistle. Being chased down by a homicidal, overgrown theater kid after the Baudelaire fortune.
They also wouldn’t have guessed their current predicament, being stuck in a submarine captained by a teenager. Her name was Fiona Widdershins. She had become captain of the Queeqeug ever since her stepfather got a distress call from a manatee. She was looking for a sugar bowl, the same one that the Baudelaire’s former guardian Esme Squalor was after.
She was also very captivating, especially to a certain Baudelaire. And it pissed Y/n off.
Klaus wasn’t theirs; they knew that. Y/n was constantly reminded of that. But watching as he and Fiona worked closely together to locate the sugar bowl, flirty remarks from her every now and then, Y/n couldn’t stop the jealousy from overcoming them.
“He doesn’t even know her,” Y/n muttered as she watched the two laugh at a joke from afar.
“You know,” Y/n was startled by Violet’s sudden presence beside them, “You could tell him how you feel. It would be better than moping around, watching the two of them.”
“Absolutely not.” Y/n shook the ridiculous idea away. “That would end in disaster.”
“How so?”
“When Klaus rejects me-”
“He won’t.”
“Fine. If he rejects me, we’ll still be stuck together in a submarine until God knows when. And the situation’s awkwardness would be so suffocating that I would jump out into the sea to escape it.”
“Oh, don’t be so dramatic.” Violet laughed at the visual of Y/n’s words. “Klaus won’t reject you, Y/n. I know it.”
“Then why is he flirting with Fiona right in front of us like that?”
“He probably doesn’t see it as flirting, just regular conversation. Klaus may be book smart, but he’s not exactly versed in things like relationships.”
Y/n knew this was true. They had known the Baudelaires long enough to know that they weren’t very experienced when it came to romantic feelings. Most of the experience they did have was from the people they had encountered when their unfortunate events had first started to occur.
“Whatever, I’m still not gonna tell him.”
“Tell who what?” Y/n was again startled by another Baudelaire sibling, Klaus. It seemed that Fiona had gone to steer the submarine in the needed direction, because she was out of the room.
“Actually, we were talking about-” Y/n put their hand over Violet’s mouth to stop her from exposing them.
“Nothing!” Y/n had said that louder than they intended to. They cleared their throat. “We weren’t talking about anything.”
Klaus gave Violet a look. Y/n couldn’t decipher what the look meant, he looked confused, but there was some kind of message in his eyes. Violet apparently knew the message because she made up some excuse to leave.
“I’ll go check on Sunny.” She left quickly, leaving Klaus and Y/n alone in the room.
“Shouldn’t you go back to Fiona?” Y/n immediately hit themself mentally for the question. Why did they feel the need to bring Fiona up now that she and Klaus had finally taken a break from flirting with each other?
“Why would I go back to Fiona?” Klaus looked even more confused. Y/n couldn’t help rolling their eyes.
“Why wouldn’t you? You two were flirting and close together so much that I’m half surprised you didn’t start kissing right there.” Why was Y/n digging themself into an even deeper hole?
Klaus laughed.
Why the hell was he laughing?
“Y/n, are you jealous?” He asked, looking intently at them. They averted their eyes, knowing that looking at him would reveal everything. They didn’t feel like jumping out of the submarine right now.
“That’s absurd.” They scoffed. “Public displays of affection are just disgusting, that’s all.” Klaus laughed again.
“Disgusting? Really?” He took Y/n’s hands in his, making them look at him. “Y/n, there was nothing affectionate about my conversations with Fiona.”
“Maybe not on your side, but she seemed to think differently.”
“Why do you care so much?”
“I don’t want to see some girl flirting with the guy I like. Is that such a crime?” Y/n started punching themself on the inside again. Klaus looked pleasantly surprised.
“Last time I checked, it’s not.” Y/n couldn’t understand why he was being so cheeky. “If it makes you feel any better, though, I have it on good authority that the guy you like isn’t interested in Fiona.”
Oh.
“Oh, um… Is the guy I like interested in anyone?” Y/n asked. They had a feeling where this was going, but you could never be too sure about these kinds of things. Klaus nodded.
“Yes, he seems to like a particular someone.”
“And that is?”
Klaus moved closer to Y/n, leaning down. Their lips were so close to touching yet so far.
“Guess.”

With a grand gesture, Officer Luciana stepped off the platform, clunked to the back of the room, and dragged a frightened-looking man out of a folding chair. He was dressed in a rumpled suit with a large rip across the shoulder, and a pair of shiny silver handcuffs.
“But I’m not Count Olaf!” the man cried. “My name is Jacques, and—”
“But lots of people have only one eyebrow,” Jacques cried, “and I have this tattoo as part of my job.”
“I’m not a villain!” Jacques said frantically. “I work for the volunteer—”
Jacques gave the children a grateful smile, but Officer Luciana turned around and clunked over to where the Baudelaires were standing.
“But I’m innocent!” the man on the platform cried. “Please listen to me, I beg of you! I’m not Count Olaf! My name is Jacques!” He turned to the three siblings, who could see he had tears in his eyes. “Oh, Baudelaires,” he said, “I am so relieved to see that you are alive. Your parents—” “That’s enough out of you,” Officer Luciana said, clasping her white-gloved hand over Jacques’s mouth.
J's description in tvv always kills me. "frightened-looking" "frantically" "cried" "tears in his eyes". he was frightened. desperate. in tears. it's just ...... so much. this is the first time the readers see J and it's in one of his worst moments.
in fact, it's not only one of his worse moments. it's also arguably his only on-screen moments. (when i say on-screen, i don't actually mean on screen, i guess, since i'm talking about the books, but you get what i mean). like sure, we get other details later, through occasional mentions/memories/flashbacks from others. we read his letters in tua, and there's the vfd meeting script. but he doesn't directly appear in the sense he appeared in tvv. those really were the only moments. even in atwq he didn't show up.
aside from tvv where he does show up, where he does appear, everywhere else he's more just, talked about / in flashbacks. quigley mentioned him. his siblings mentioned him. widdershins mentioned him. we saw his letters - but not himself directly - in tua. to quigley his this sort of mysterious image, someone who quigley learned some stuff from but also didn't really tell him much directly bc he was busy. in atwq he does not appear, and also wasn't mentioned by ghede when she listed what other apprentices of lemony's era were doing at that time - making him seem even more mysterious.
in his letters we found he and lemony have similar writing styles in some way, he also signs thing "with all due respect". he writes stuff like "i hope that this package reaches you safely, and that you are safe when it reaches you, and that i will be safe in making sure this package will reach you in safety, in a safe manner, and in a safe." or "but we have not been under normal circumstances for quite some time. for instance, currently i am under sixty feet of water, rather than under normal circumstances."
he says "please pass the brandy" in response to lemony's words during the vfd meeting.
he has this .... sort of dry humor of his own. sharp-witted. plays with word usage the way lemony did. he seems mysterious and stays in the shadow a lot, from the way we learned so few things about him in atwq. the atwq profile card of lemony covering his face but jacques in silhouette always gets me.
but then, J - mysterious, ambiguous, lurking in the shadows, quiet, dry-humor - his only, actually appearing physically moment was in tvv: and he was frightened. and frantic. one of his worst moments. and this absolutely kills me. and lemony described all that, too.

sbg members headcanon regarding tattoos
has the tattoo because it was still a thing in vfd at the time:
monty (hides it with multi-colorful socks with snakes on them)
sally and gustav (hides it with neutral color socks)
snicket siblings (sometimes they hide it, sometimes they don't)
denouement triplets (pre-canon, dewey hides his with blue socks, ernest hides his with green socks, and frank dies his with red socks. by canon, they wear white socks)
josephine (hides it with dark color socks or tights. during canon, her long mourning dress helps also)
raymond 'q' quagmire (hides it with white or grey socks)
olaf (pre-opera night, he used to hide it with socks of different patterns and color combinations; he liked purple zigzags socks the most. post-opera night, he switched between white or black socks. learning the true players of the opera night had olaf forgoing socks)
beatrice (hides it with socks/tights or makeup; it depends on what she's wearing)
bertrand (hides it with socks or makeup; it depends on what he's wearing)
r (hides it with socks/tights or makeup; it depends on what she's wearing)
doesn't have tattoo for they were recruited after tattoo ban:
gregor and ike + hector (they were the first recruits to be taken after the tattoo ban. gregor would have gotten the tattoo if his parents didn't get him back [via ishmael helping out/owning d anwhistle a favor] after his first recruit lead to the real h anwhistle's death)
the future joan quagmire and her sisters alex and lindsey (they were recruited during high school because the triplets were nosy about a group of students)
esme (she got recruited in middle school because she got nosy over one of her teachers; her favorite teacher in fact)
fernald (lump sbg member born after tattoo ban; fernald for a time like the idea of having the tattoo, but by the present canon events fernald is GLAD that he doesn't)
doesn't have the tattoo, but should:
georgina orwell (doesn't see herself as part of the sbg; like that stop others saying she is. anyway, georgina when recruited did got the tattoo on her ankle. however, her parents managed to take her back during the schism, and georgina before her second recruitment removed her tattoo when she was studying to become an optometrist. the organization didn't bother to ask her to get the tattoo again on a different spot of her own free choice.)
miranda, n, and olivia (they were taken at a time when the tattoo wasn't ban. their mother having to take over caligari carnival so sudden over her brother's death -he was the previous owner- made a deal with the organization to give her children directly)
larry (was taken at the same time as r on account of getting pick up while r's recruiters snatch her up. no one really knows how larry got gloss over, but he's not complaining)
haruki [murakami] (was recruited at a time when the tattoo wasn't ban. however, the japanese branch of vfd play loose with the tattoo rules and allow exemptions if argue well. his parents won their argument)
shouldn't have the tattoo, but does:
widdershins (he joined after tattoo ban was enacted, and many saw his ankle tattoo free. as such, when his associates saw his tattooed ankle one summer day, it became a mystery that needed to be solve. hides it with navy or black shocks, or bandages he wrap around his ankle)

Multiple Births
Round 1 Poll 16
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Read Widdershins
Read Dumbing of Age
Submitted context (possible spoilers) and propaganda under the cut
Sal and Walky : From the site's cast page:
Walky is his parents’ favorite child. He’s smart and he doesn’t get into trouble, but he could be a little more ambitious. He’s here at college because his parents want him to be, but mostly what he wants to do is watch television and goof off. Lucky for him that good grades came easily to him (in high school), so he figures college will be everything he’s ever wanted. No parents, no structure order — just eating McNuggets whenever, wherever.
Walky is Sal’s twin brother, and the two very different siblings haven’t really spoken much in a long while.
Sal’s parents always liked her brother Walky better, and so over the years she started rebelling more and more to get attention. This culminated in a double convenience store holdup that got her arrested and exiled to a Catholic boarding school in Tennessee for most of her teen years. Her parents expected her to find Jesus (or whatever), but she instead found smoking, tattoos, and motorcycles. As you can imagine, Sal turns a lot of heads, but she finds this mostly annoying. Stop idolizing her, dammit. She can’t help how cool she is.

Fuck it. V.F.D but make it Magical
So, I've made some posts where I make AUs that kick V.F.D's cult levels up to 11, but woe is you I thought about something for too long again.
The Mythological Creatures AU
V.F.D is a secret organization where nonhumans hide in plain sight using magic and other methods to pass themselves off as humans.
The Eye Tattoo is now a magical seal used to help them hide their true forms. This can either be achieved through an actual mark on the skin or through a pendant/trinket worn somewhere on the body. Humans are aware of the existence of nonhumans, but typically fear them.
(Gonna split this in two Sugar Bowl Gen and Unfortunate Gen)
Sugar Bowl Gen:
Olaf: Changeling/Shapeshifter (His disguises are still see-through because something always looks viscerally wrong about him. Very Uncanny Valley)
Olaf’s Troupe:
Bald Man With Warts – Human (Not Everyone is Nonhuman)
Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender (Orlando) – Human (Not Everyone is Nonhuman)
The White-Faced Women – Ghosts (Haunted Olaf’s Theater, Now haunting Olaf until they leave in-story)
Fernald – Gillman (Think Creature From The Black Lagoon because I’ll get rid of the fishhooks joke over my dead body)
The Snicket Siblings: Algea (Often mistaken for angels due to their vulture wings, these are creatures that are the physical personification of sorrow.)
Beatrice: Angel (Fallen, taking a bit of inspiration from Dante’s Inferno. Feels thematically appropriate)
Bertrand: Sirin (Often mistaken for angels due to their owl wings, these are creatures that are the physical personification of joy)
Monty: Naga (Because of course I’m gonna make snake uncle a snake!)
Josephine: Banshee (Think of the fact that her anxiety is heightened because she can’t tell if her screams are because she’s scared or because someone’s going to die, and it could be her this time. Like the scream that happened the day Ike died)
Georgina Orwell: Samodiva (A type of fairy known for hypnotizing men and driving them insane)
Sir: Smoke/Smog Monster (Born from the lumbermill’s smoke production. His cigars help him keep a physical form)
Charles: Warlock (Human born with magical ability and connection. Magically bound to Sir)
(The Lumbermill Workers are all humans, which makes them easier to control and manipulate)
Esme: Pixie (Passes herself off as a regular fairy to hide her true nature)
Jerome: Satyr (No specific reason, but Satyr’s are known for being docile and made a fool of in theatrical productions if you want to stretch)
Hector: Human (Not everyone can be nonhuman. I like to think nonhumans are actually not allowed in the Village of Foul Devotees unless they are a type of bird creature. So, if he were a nonhuman, Hector would be a Harpy. Alternatively, he is a Harpy, but he’s hiding his true form like V.F.D associates do to avoid persecution)
Olivia Caliban (Miranda Caliban by Extension): Oracle (Human born with magical abilities and the gift of prophecy. Ishmael often dismisses Miranda’s prophecies. Kind of a Cassandra situation)
Captain Widdershins: Tannin (Sea Serpent, think a Water Naga. Some sources refer to this creature as “The Whale” because they are sometimes presented with the head of a boar and the body of the whale. It’s a Moby Dick reference!)
The Denouement Triplets: Shadow Creatures (They morph and move through shadows, sometimes even blending together. This makes it even harder to tell Ernest and Frank apart, and nearly impossible to find Dewey. They can morph into shadows to prevent harm to their physical form… If they’re fast enough.)
Ishmael: Poltergeist (A malevolent spirit haunting the island and its residents. Keeps his physical form by stealing the life force and free will of those who allow him to. His powers do not work on the unwilling.)
(Olaf’s Mentors are both Demons.)
(Mr. Poe and family are humans)
I'm open for suggestions for any characters I missed.
Like, what was Ike before he died?
Gustav? Sally? R?
How about our Netflix Originals? I'd love your opinions on Jacqueline, Larry, and Babs.
See you in Part Two to discuss the kids!

So this is really random, and no one asked for this, but have my nationality headcanons for a whole load of asoue/atwq characters.?? No real explanation for these hcs, it's just how I imagine the characters ! :) (might throw in some extra hcs along the way because why not.)
P.S I'm quite fascinated by the history of the colonisation of America and the patterns of immigration that occurred thereafter, which is partially why I'm making this post. However, I'm not American and have never received actual American education so I'm sorry if I am miseducated in any regard.
Tumblr media
Sugar bowl gen
Esmé Squalor is British/Syrian
HC: she is a first generation immigrant to the USA when the events of the books take place. Her mother was Syrian and her father British. She has a twin brother who disagreed with her involvement in VFD and left the USA to go back to England once they were of age. She hasn't seen him since they were teenagers.
Jerome Squalor is British-American
HC: His parents immigrated to the USA from England before he was born.
Bertrand Baudelaire is French
HC: He is a first-generation immigrant and went to the USA on his own after the death of his parents.
Beatrice Baudelaire is American
HC: By the time she was born, her family had been in the USA for many generations. Some British and Irish ancestry.
The Snicket siblings are Chinese-American
HC: the Snicket siblings are second-generation immigrants to the USA. Both of their parents were Chinese.
Mrs (headcanoned first name Marzia) Quagmire is Italian-American
HC: she is a second generation immigrant. She grew up in a household that primarily spoke Italian.
Mr (headcanoned first name William) Quagmire is American
HC: like Bea, his family had been in the USA for many generations before his birth. British and Dutch ancestry.
Count Olaf is German-American
HC: Olaf is a second or third generation immigrant. His family were very wealthy but went to ruin and ran away to the USA. He still insists on keeping his ancestral title despite this.
Montgomery Montgomery is Pakistani-American
HC: Monty is a second-gen immigrant. He had three siblings who all moved across the USA once of age, but he made an effort to keep in touch with them and their extended family in Pakistan.
Ellington Feint is Chinese-American
HC: Ellington is a second-gen immigrant. Her father was American with British ancestry and her mother was a first-gen Chinese immigrant.
Captain (headcanoned first name Rory) Widdershins is Irish-American
HC: a third-gen immigrant who grew up very disconnected from his heritage due to being in the foster system.
Fernald "Widdershins" is Moroccan/American
HC: him and his sister Fiona (and theorised sister Friday) had an American mother and Moroccan father. Their father left before they were born and mother left when Fiona was young, so they were raised by Widdershins. They know very little about their heritage.
Moxie Mallahan is American
HC: her family had been in the USA for many generations before her birth. Distant British and Dutch ancestry.
Arthur Poe is American
HC: Poe and his wife both had generations of family in the USA. He has some Dutch ancestry.
Josephine Anwhistle is American
HC: her family had also been in the USA for many generations. She had distant Irish ancestry. She made effort to reconnect with her ancestry in some regards.
Ike Anwhistle is American
HC: Ike, too, had family for generations in the USA. Canonically in the books, he is the second cousin of one of the Baudelaire parents (I hc him on Bea's side of the family) so in my headcanon, his ancestry is British/Irish. His brother, Gregor, is obviously the same.
The Denouement triplets are American
HC: the triplets are third-generation immigrants with British and Dutch ancestry. Mother's side British and father's side Dutch. There had been plans to raise the triplets in England, but a mysterious friend of their mother convinced them to stay in the USA for reasons unknown...
Tumblr media
Unfortunate Gen
The Baudelaire children are French-American
HC: Bea is American and Bertrand French, as stated above. They grew up speaking both languages fluently.
The Quagmire triplets are Italian-American
HC: their mother is Italian and their father American. Their mother and her parents made sure they grew up speaking Italian.
Fiona Widdershins is American/Moroccan
HC: As stated with Fernald above, her biological father was Moroccan, although her and Fernald never knew him nor that they were Moroccan.
Carmelita Spats is Dutch-American
HC: Carmelita is a fourth-generation immigrant and she has little connection to her ancestry due to not being in contact with her family anymore.
Beatrice Baudelaire II is Chinese-American
HC: as Kit is her mother, she has her ancestry, of course. I am personally a fan of the theory that Olaf is her father, not Dewey, so in this post, we'll say that his ancestry plays here too...
Ben (Violet's friend) is American
HC: Ben is American with British and Native American ancestry.
Well, I've probably missed about a million characters, but there it is ! This is a super random post but I just felt like I might as well post some headcanons for the hell of it. Always love to hear other people's headcanons for Snicketverse characters. Thanks if you read all the way to the end, I love you

hello! it's your friendly anon again :D! i truly love how details you are with your headcanons! the isadora headcanon is my favorite!
this been on my mind after browsing your blog a bit, so i hope you don't mind me asking once again. as your main focus is the unfortunate generation, especially the quagmire triplets, do you have any thoughts or headcanons for the other kids? in particular, fiona? fiona is one my favorite characters next to the quags. i would love to read anything you have for her.
Hi again anon! :) Great hearing from you again! :D I’m really happy you liked the last hcs I did!!!! :)))
I have lots of hcs for the unfortunate gen so I’ll just stick to answering for Fiona in this so my answer doesn’t turn out to be the length of a novel! :) [feel free to ask for the other characters again tho+I will happily answer in detail!]
Thoughts about Fiona:
Not hesitating is definitely a key aspect of her character (I mean that one’s obvious tho) but I like how consistent this is with all aspects of her. She doesn’t hesitate to take charge but she also doesn’t hesitate to correct those who are in charge, like correcting Captain Widdershins by adding “or she” to his motto.
{ Negative side of this? Not hesitating for long enough to kiss Klaus. As in, not even waiting for his consent. Although it is stated on page 232 of ‘The Grim Grotto’ that Fiona “hesitated for a small moment” the fact that Klaus’ reaction to the kiss of to lift “one trembling hand to his face, as if Fiona had given him a slap instead of a kiss” clearly conveys how the kiss was unwanted. Although I personally believe it was more so due to circumstances than attraction that the kiss was unwanted as Fiona does this after betraying the Baudelaires. }
Wracking up life experiences like kissing is maybe something Fiona is trying to do as she may feel she’s missing out by spending her time isolated from her peers on a submarine. Maybe she didn’t even want to kiss Klaus specifically, maybe she just wanted to kiss someone. Resulting in her failing to consider (or failing to act on the possibility) that the romantic desire was not mutual or that it shouldn’t have been acted on under those circumstances, i.e, kissing your crush right after revealing you have teamed up with the guy who has been stalking him+his siblings trying to murder+kidnap them.
Loyal: I know she may seem like one of the least loyal characters in the series given (SPOILERS FOR ‘THE GRIM GROTTO’) how in TGG she betrays the Baudelaires, choosing to join the ‘bad’ side of VFD over helping them however thinking about all that time she spent isolated, likely thinking+imagining scenarios where her brother-Fernald/the hook-handed man- had stayed with her…the fact that Fiona still chooses her brother over her friends despite him abandoning her and becoming a villain clearly conveys how deeply loyal she is to her family.
“mother is dead” “father moved away” “stepfather has abandoned me”
“my brother may not be as wonderful as you Baudelaires, but he’s the only family I have. Aye! I’m staying with him! Aye!” [‘The Grim Grotto’ Chapter 13, page 224]
The fact that in this outburst Fiona is (subconsciously?) mimicking the speech patterns “Aye!” of the stepfather who abandoned her is another level of sad. She has to follow her family because she knows that if she doesn’t then she will be left behind.
***
I noticed a slight parallel between Fiona’s character and Olaf in the Netflix version. (Not exact wording)
Violet: His name’s Phil.
Fiona: Well, I call him Cooky.
Vs
Fiona: His name’s Fernald.
Olaf: Well, I call him Hooky.
In Fiona’s case I doubt the nickname was meant as insulting given how Phil says he doesn’t care what he’s called whereas in Olaf’s case Fernald tried multiple times to tell Olaf his name but was shut down every time. This shows how although Fiona’s actions may be similar to some of the villainous characters (E.g by joining the ‘bad’ side of the schism) her good intentions are what sets her apart.
***
The way she folded her family photo in Netflix!TGG was having creases between each person in the photo (photo of younger Fiona with her stepfather and Fernald). This could be so that she only sees the image she wants to see when looking at it, E.g, folding Fernald away so she sees only her stepfather+her and doesn’t have to remember the pain of Fernald being gone.
Defiant: A detail I remember from the book version of TGG is ‘or she’ being scratched next to the quote ‘He who hesitates is lost.’ I like how she’s willing to noticeably+permanently challenge flawed things. Especially given how she may have risked punishment for this ‘vandalism’.
Capable+Independent: in Netflix!TGG Fiona was able to successfully control an entire submarine on her own!! She even repaired damaged solo! This is impressive (if a little sad that so much responsibility+pressure has been placed on her…)
I love how said independence clashes with Violet’s character. These two have had to take charge of things for their own safety (+the safety of siblings for Violet) that it’s difficult for them to follow decisions made by the other.
In terms of VFD…she’s in deep😟… Fiona didn’t even know what was in the sugar bowl but still chose to pursue that inanimate object over taking three children to ‘safety’. Also, in her telegram to Kit Snicket in ‘The Grim Grotto’ she mentioned the safety of the sugar bowl BEFORE the danger that three live human beings aka the Baudelaires were in. Yikes. (Ig that’s what growing up surrounded entirely by VFD members can do…)
Sorry to low-key insult her like this but Fiona had no need to reveal Fernald was her brother to Olaf. The revelation would be more likely to get her used as blackmail to get Fernald to do Olaf’s bidding than anything else tbh. (Scene took place in TGG when Olaf was threatening to kill Fernald and had his hands to his throat, pushed up against a wall). Maybe the threat of the situation caused Fiona to act without thinking. Especially given the ‘no hesitating’ mindset that’s been drilled into her.
Major respect to Fiona for somehow putting up with this mess of a man for YEARS :’) [Cap Widdershins]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is probably reading WAY too into it but you said you like my detailed analysis so,like a submarine, I’ll dive in DEEP. Fiona’s glasses are shaped like isosceles triangles: 2 sides equal, 1 different. Fiona+Fernald on one side of VFD captain Widdershins on another. 🔼
2 angles the same, 1 different. Fiona being willing to see things from Fernald’s angle. Cap Widdershins being unbudging.
Or, Captain Widdershins + Fernald knowing secrets that are “too terrible for young people to know” whilst Fiona is left in the dark. Someone is always left out in their family trio.
Hc that post-canon Fiona living on land would choose clothes like jumpsuits that resemble what she wore on the Queequeg for familiarity. Refuses to go to the opticians to update her prescription for the longest time bc she doesn’t want to change her triangle glasses. Klaus avidly encourages her to avoid the opticians. Eventually she goes bc she is informed that she can keep the frames+just change the lenses if she wants to. 👓
Fiona would find it really difficult to adjust to ‘normal’ life post-canon (if she ever gets that chance-) bc ordinary life would be so STRANGE to her after growing up underwater 🌊 surrounded entirely by VFD members. Poor girl probably thinks communicating via secret code through literary references is normal. Also she’s not had many peers to interact with so that’d be an issue. Not to mention things VFD (especially the ‘bad’ side) may have forced her to do that she’d have to come to terms with…
Uses ‘Shiitake mushrooms!’ as a swear 🍄.
Hope you like this analysis, anon! Sorry this took a while, Fiona is a complicated character+I wanted to do her justice. :)
Also, she would use this mug I found on Pinterest! ☕️

Lighthearted Snicket Headcanons
Jacob will say Jacques name was inspired by a hand of cards: Jack, Ace, Queen, Three, Five (JAQ35).
People who don’t know him very well think this is a joke
People who know him pretty well think it might not be
People who know him very well know the Snickets have a tradition of naming children after deceased loved ones, and that Jacob can be a bit of a troll
Regardless, Jacques has received coded messages in decks of cards where those are the first five
In his early VFD days, Jacob tried to use folk songs for Verse Fluctuation Declaration, which caused problems because folk songs tend to have variable versions with different lyrics, garbling the intended message
Jacques will rarely use sea shanties for Verse Fluctuation Declaration, but they tend to be shanties he learned aboard the Queequeg, with other volunteers who were there (Widdershins, Gustav) so there’s internal consistency and he’s more successful
Lemony was, as per tradition, named after an old associate of his mother’s. The original Lemony was part of an alphabetical trio (like the Snicket siblings, or Dewey-Ernest-Frank) of Lemony, Melanie, and Nilima
Fun fact! Nilima as a name means “dark blue, sapphire” and Melanie is from the Greek for “black, dark” so the three siblings were color-coded (Yellow, Black and Blue) and tended to dress accordingly, or use those colors as signifiers.

do quigley or duncan or their sister die? I’m on season 1 but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a clip anywhere of quigley and duncan together 😢
While the books leave it ambiguous, I do believe there is a definitive answer. Major spoilers for S3/all 13 books under the cut.
In the series!canon, Quigley reunites with his siblings on the SSHAM, and the secret code in The Incomplete History references them reuniting with the Baudelaires on Briny Beach.
In the book!canon, well... I have an unpopular opinion on this one; I believe that most, if not all of the members of the Queequeg crash survived. And this isn't just because I love the Quagmires and Fiona... I have evidence!
You see, we know that most of Snicket's knowledge of the Baudelaires' thoughts, feelings and situations were taken from their island commonplace book - A Series of Unfortunate Events- as he mentions them writing in the book. However, they could not write information they were not privy to, and all they knew about the Queequeg crash was that Kit suspected everyone was eaten by the Great Unknown.
However, in an earlier portion of The End, when the Baudelaires are traveling to the arboretum, Snicket says that their friends (the Quagmires, Fiona probably) were "in circumstances just as dark although quite a bit damper than" theirs. "Just as dark" does not qualify death at the moment, as the Baudelaires are simply under a moral quandary and the Medusoid Mycelium has not been released yet. As well as this, they would not know if their friends were in a "damp" situation, just a "dark" one. And who would know better what situation they were in at that time than the Quagmires themselves?
As such, Snicket likely knows something we don't. As well as this, we know Kit's story doesn't always align with the truth- she claims all three Widdershins were on the Queequeg when it crashed, however Snicket stated in The Penultimate Peril that Fernald was fighting the Quagmires aboard the ship (not necessarily implicating Fernald in villainy, it's likely Duncan and Isadora just saw him and heard the kill bill sirens).
Why would he leave their fate ambiguous? Well, considering several villains survived the Hotel Denouement, and many of them are stated to have something against the Quagmires (the Woman and Man send their eagles to sink the SSHAM home, and Esmé was in charge of their estate and helped Olaf capture them), it's likely the Quagmires want to stay as under their enemies' radar as possible.
Adding to this, they could be trying to stay off the radar of VFD itself; VFD does not have a crystal-clear reputation, and in fact seems to have a dangerous cult-like atmosphere (best description here, but also see here, here, here). And seeing as Fernald is very disillusioned with the organization, now an enemy of both sides, he would definitely not want to be seen by them; adding to this Fiona's loyalty to him and the beginnings of her break with the organization in The Grim Grotto, she'd probably want to lay low as well.
Duncan and Isadora also, probably, very against VFD. They found out something about it while researching, and after being captured by Olaf and the White-Faced Women, they shout to the Baudelaires that they learned about something terrible- which they immediately follow up by shouting about VFD. And considering how useless the volunteers were in rescuing them, and how they spent a lot of time with Hector, who seems to have either left the organization or be hiding from them, they almost definitely do not have a good view of it. Even though Quigley was p much successfully inducted by Jacques, he's not going to want to leave his siblings so soon after their reunion.
All that to say, at the very least, everyone but Widdershins has good reasons to want VFD to leave them alone. So throwing out that they're alive would be dangerous for them, especially if Snicket mentioned they'd contacted him. So he likely gave some clues and left it ambiguous so as to not completely lie.
As to how they survived? I've linked to @snicketsleuth a lot but they have a pretty good idea...
tl;dr the Queequeg and SSHAMH crews are probably alive!

The R - Part 1:
What is the connection between Mr Remora and Duchess R [of Winnipeg]?
One of the many mysteries that Lemony Snicket has left behind for readers (and viewers, to a certain extent) is 'What does the R stand for, in "Duchess R" ?' I am going to attempt to answer this question using any resources available, under the title 'The R'. This will be over a series of unfortunate posts, in this format.
Firstly, we must look for any and all clues that can give us even the slightest hint as to what R might stand for.

Now, let's rule out everyone who does not have a name beginning with R, or is unclear: (again, feel free to skip ahead)
Bald Man with the Long Nose
Mrs. Bass
Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender
Incredibly Deadly Viper
Kind Editor
Man with a Beard but No Hair

Duchess R
R's Mother
R's Father
Young Rölf
Mr. Spats
Mrs. Spats
Town Fathers
As the title states, we'll keep some focus on Remora, but we'll eliminate all other minor characters:
Bald Man with the Long Nose
Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender
Incredibly Deadly Viper
Kind Editor
Man with a Beard but No Hair
Mr. Remora
White-Faced Women
Woman with Hair but No Beard
Wart-Faced Man
Madame diLustro
Monty Montgomery's Sister
Bertrand Baudelaire's Cousin
Robinson
Duchess R
R's Mother
R's Father
Young Rölf
According to Various Fan Deductions:
TMWABBNH & TWWHBNB are Gifford & Ghede
The White-Faced Women are Zada and Zora
Lemony's Kind Editor is Moxie Mallahan
Madame diLustro is Sunny Baudelaire
This rules out the 4 of them.
Bald Man with the Long Nose
Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender
Incredibly Deadly Viper
Mr. Remora
Wart-Faced Man
Monty Montgomery's Sister
Bertrand Baudelaire's Cousin
Robinson
Duchess R
R's Mother
R's Father
Young Rölf
Logically speaking, why would there be a connection between Ink and Duchess R? Let's eliminate unlikely possibilities:
Mr. Remora
Monty Montgomery's Sister
Bertrand Baudelaire's Cousin
Robinson
Duchess R
R's Mother
R's Father
Young Rölf
Monty Montgomery's sister would be (_insert name here_) Montgomery. This, to me, rules her out too... and the same logic applies to Bertrand's cousin.
Mr. Remora
Robinson
(Duchess R)
(R's Mother)
(R's Father)
Young Rölf
Obviously her family are related:
Mr. Remora
Robinson - Islander
Young Rölf
So, the above names are generated. I will, henceforth, analyse a link between each character and R, starting with Remora.
POINTS:
a. It's known that a few characters in the Snicket-verse have alliterating names, such as Quigley Quagmire, Beatrice Baudelaire.
b. It's also known that some characters have WEIRD connections to others, such as Quigley's 'relation' to Mr Poe.
THEORY: Given a. and b. to be true, Mr R _______ Remora, has some abstract connection to the Duchess.
This connection can only really be established if one goes by Netflix canon and assumes Nero's surname to be Feint, and combines this with ATWQ:
Duchess R is Remora's boss' ancestor's murderer's friend.
R's friend is Lemony, who murdered Hangfire, who is the ancestor of Nero, Remora's boss.
Part 2 Still to Come...

okay I think I'm onto something here. What do we know about Ben's siblings? They're boy and girl twins, tall, and 'high-ranking government jobs'.
Tumblr media
Kate shared this picture of the silhouettes of characters for this book on Twitter a few months ago and said there were a few new characters in there too. Look at the 2 in the middle! They stand similar to Ben but matching male-female and tall. (I've said all this before but just re-iterating)
Tumblr media
Anyway, I've only just put this together but if they work in government and the coronation is happening in Widdershins, I think it's super possible that they would be coming to Widdershins to do Important Wizard work during the coronation also!
I know I always get convinced of theories that turn out not to be true but I do have a good track record with Ben... I think it would be so great to get to finally see him interact with his family and see how much he's grown (or not, I suppose lol) so anyway I'm excited to see :D

“Yes,” Kit said. “You three had been spotted by another volunteer. We knew, of course, that you children had nothing to do with my brother's death, no matter what that ridiculous reporter wrote in The Daily Punctilio.” The Baudelaires looked at one another. They had almost forgotten about Geraldine Julienne, a journalist who had caused them much inadvertent trouble, a phrase which here means “published in the newspaper that the Baudelaire orphans had murdered Jacques Snicket, whom she mistakenly identified as Count Olaf.” The siblings had found it necessary to disguise themselves several times so as not to be captured by the authorities. “Who spotted us?” Klaus asked. “Quigley Quagmire, of course,” she said. “He found you in the Mortmain Mountains, and then managed to contact me when you were separated from him. He and I managed to meet each other in an abandoned bathrobe emporium, where we disguised ourselves as mannequins while we figured out what to do next. Finally, we managed to send a Volunteer Factual Dispatch to Captain Widdershins's submarine.”
-- the penultimate peril
thinking about the way kit calls quigley a volunteer, and the way quigley contacted kit after being separated from the baudelaires and then met up with her. he really does .... operate like a true volunteer, the way he knows and uses their method. but also. the way kit refers to him as one.
quigley managing to contact kit (or, not necessarily it was kit he was looking for but just a volunteer in general) after losing touch with the baudelaires. like, we know in tss he's mentioned jacques but not kit, and he's never met her before, though it's possible jacques said something. but it's also possible he didn't tell quigley about his sister, because frankly, he didn't tell him very much. kept thinking about how quigley has met both the snicket twins. kit considered him a volunteer. jacques - possibly consider him an apprentice of some sort, but we'll never know what j thinks on the subject

some sbg males height:
denouements: 6'5 (195cm). they joke about how they could easily pick up people and take them away, but they never do it. well, except frank pre-canon. frank sometimes has the need to intervene fights; he will pick up one the two brawlers and drag their ass away. also: despite having limbs like 'straws', they're quite strong.
olaf: 6'4 (193cm). olaf came from a family of tall people, so it's no surprise that he grew up to be tall also. olaf likes his height, especially back in happier days when olaf was dating kit. kit had a habit of pulling him down to her level (usually by the tie or collar) so she can kiss him. olaf had no qualms with it.
jacques: 6'1 (185cm). jacques is the tallest of his siblings, and incidentally, this is the same height as their father (kit and lemony are on the shorter side). jacques is threaten by his shorter associates to get kick in the shins, which only happened twice (beatrice and r due to being angry at him at different occasions).
widdershins: 6'0 (183cm). widdershins wouldn't be this tall if he wasn't part of vfd. it's a mix of his genes from his father's side and growing up in a environment that allowed him to be healthy and strong. he's also a bit stocky (fat and muscle), and it's something widdershins feels insecure about (and got dieting books for).
gregor: 5'11 (180cm). the tallest of the anwhistles, gregor's stocky build and his personality doesn't help the illusion he's taller than he appears. gregor wears shoes that does give him an inch of height, but he doesn't want to be taller than 6'0. gregor actually reached his full height in his teen years before he stop growing.
ike: 5'10 (178cm). the funny thing is that ike was the shortest anwhistle as a child, and he had the baby fat to match (he was a rather chubby child). when ike reach puberty, he grew like a beanstalk (and also lost his baby fat and chubbiness). ike had a field day being taller than hector until hector pushed him to the ground.
hector: 5'7 or 5'8 (170cm or 172.7cm). hector's biological family is full of short people, with his father's height (the same as hector's) is consider tall. hector is tall by short people's standards (re: the baudelaires in tvv). hector is okay with his height now, but back then he wasn't. he didn't regret pushing ike to the ground.
