I'm listening to one of the fact checks of that youtube guy and it really is a 0-5-books-a-year problem that people believed him. So much of the made-up shit this guy says could be corrected if you had read any number of extremely popular, widely available books including The Pink Triangle, The Well of Loneliness, or even The Lord of the fucking Rings. Literally any of the most popular pop-history books about WWII would have corrected most of his claims. You even just needed to be aware of the existence of the famous and iconic Sandman comics series. Amazing shit.

Oscar Issac/Pedro Pascal Fan Art and Fiction Pride Event 2024

Hello friends!

Let's try this again and I'll try to be more clear to not invoke discourse. That being said, it is *my* event and if you'd like to run one a certain way, go nuts. However, this is how I'm doing it.

I had a lot of fun doing Dead Dove December and the Triple Frontier Anniversary Event so I decided I wanted to do an event for pride this year! I know it seems far away right now, especially given how many of us in north America are still cold af, but I wanna give everyone time!

Each week of pride will have a theme to write or draw for (you don't have to do all of them! Think of it like kinktober.) at the end, I will put out a masterlist (or multiple depending how many)so we can all share each other's work.

Why?

Oscar Isaac and Pedro Pascal are both allies to LGBT people, Pedro having played multiple queer rolls and having likened his sexuality to that of Prince Oberyn. Despite none of the characters being canon queer, Triple Frontier specifically lends itself to queer stories. Recently, theres been a rise in stories of Oscar characters in relationships or Pedro characters in relationships which I love.

What I'd really like to do is encourage people to think past x fem!reader or canon presentation of characters. I want to encourage gay, lesbian, bisexual relationships, trans readers, trans interpretations of characters etc. More content guidelines will be in the what section.

Where?

Primarily tumblr.com, our very own shithole hellsight. However, especially given tumblr's censorship vs. twitter, I am encouraging posting on twitter or wherever you'd like. If you post something elsewhere, send me a link or send me a post you made about it on tumblr and I'll promote the link.

Additionally if you only write on ao3, I'd love for you to participate too! Once again, just send the link!

When?

in order to do the week by week themes and hold all of June, there will be 6 weeks from May 26th-July 6th

Each week will have themes. I won't be policing the weeks and these so if you do the 1st week on july 3rd, that's fine. The themes are keeping in mind both artists and writers. All things queer culture and culture of different religions, racial or country backgrounds, queer fashion, gender affirming clothes, Keshet (קשת), listening to Lady Gaga or Bruce Springsteen, watching a queer movie

June 23rd-29th: Struggles Rejection, reconciling faith and identity, missing family that rejected one, comfort, candlelight vigil, day of remembrance.

June 30th- July 6th:Strength Asserting ones or a partner/friend/family's pronouns, standing up against hate, being loudly and proudly yourself, pride events

Who?

Writers and artists in any form are welcome. I also want to encourage working with each other, writers and artists together!

For characters: Any Oscar Isaac or Pedro Pascal character has to at least be in the relationship. Other characters in universes can be done, such as FishBen.

Reader can be anyone, just properly tag! If you want to come out to Marc Spector as bisexual, do it!!! If you want Joel to take care of you after top surgery, do it!

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE QUEER TO PARTICIPATE!

However! Please do your research if writing or drawing an identity not yours. There are trans, nonbinary, gay, lebian etc bloggers all over tumblr who write about their experience, please divert to first person testimonies rather than assumptions.

What?

A few rules

MUST contain more than male character x fem!reader. Male character x fem!reader x male character does not count unless the two male characters are romantically or sexually involved or one or the reader is trans. Any Q's, dm me!

This is not a dark event. I'm not going to be policing the content matter but I really want to primarily focus on the pride. However, as a bisexual, gender non-conforming person I know a lot of pain can still be involved. What we are not doing is suicide, death, self-harm, or non consensual activity. If you have questions or would like to make a case for something, just dm me!

This is not inherently NSFW, but there is absolutely NSFW allowed. Always tag everything properly.

The usual no's like bestiality, incest, underage nsfw etc

As far as minor characters, SFW MINOR CHARACTERS IS ALLOWED. You can write or draw lgbt themes because being LGBT is not inherently sexual. For example, teenage Santi coming out as trans to Frankie or your own version of Ellie and Joel's talk about Ellie and Dina kiss. That being said, I'd prefer to reserve this to teens. Again, any questions or ideas that don' quite fit into parameters, just ask!

As always, I am allowed to use my discretion. If I do not want to include something, I won't. However, I know that there are rifts in the fandom. I won't be excluding you out of personal bias. As long as I don't have you blocked and you haven't plagerized or done something really bad to people, you'll be included. I'm not letting petty beefs get in the way. Harmful actions will, however. NO REAL PERSON FANFICTION. Do not write about Oscar Isaac or Pedro pascal being gay or trans and do not make any assumptions about their sexuality or gender identity. Oscar is happily married to a woman and Pedro has expressed his sexuality is like that of Oberyn Martell but has not elaborated much further, nor should he have to. Just leave ‘em be. You can speculate elsewhere but that’s not what this event is for.

“Jagi-ya,” you hear Minho trying to get your attention. Looking up from the bowl of ramen you’re eating, you look at your boyfriend. He gives you a cheeky smile and snaps a photo on his phone. You give him an unimpressed look before going back to your food that he had cooked over the campfire.   

What was supposed to be a weekend camping trip with your friends turned into one with your boyfriend after all your friends had backed out. Knowing you were disappointed because you were excited and looking forward to the trip, Minho took the weekend off so you could still go.   

��Do you want to go for a walk on the trail after we’ve cleaned up?” he asks as you finish eating.    

You smile and nod your head as you move to get the dishes cleaned. As you gather the empty bowls and dirty utensils, Minho joins you, his playful grin still lingering on his face. He begins to wash the dishes while you dry them. The chore you dread the most starts to feel surprisingly enjoyable with his company.  

Once the last dish is dried and put away, you both set off on the trail hand in hand. The air inside the woods is crisp and fragrant, carrying the scent of pine and earth. As you continue your journey, Minho's passion for the outdoors becomes evident. He points out various plants and birds, his knowledge of the wilderness impresses you. His knowledge of things is just one of the many qualities that you find attractive. 

In this moment, surrounded by the beauty of nature and guided by Minho, you realize that it's not just his knowledge that draws you to him. It's his way of making you open your eyes to the beauty of the world. With every step, your bond with him and nature deepens.

Hello! I should've probably made this post earlier just so you all would know, but I've been sick and busy and couldn't find the right moment for the life of me 😅

I just wanted to let you all know that I'm not active on Tumblr on purpose. I'm trying as hard as I can to avoid spoilers from Brothership as I'm afraid I'm way too slow playing it simply because I don't have enough time, and I want to fully enjoy the experience of playing this game at my own pace and keeping the surprise. I know most of you tag your posts which I deeply appreciate, but unfortunately, I've run into some posts that weren't properly tagged and got spoiled... on the same day the game was released 😬

So this is a decision that I've made: I will only check my notifs and DMs until I can finish the game, as long as it takes me. So you'll probably still see me around, only that I won't interact with posts that have to do with the game yet. I obviously want to share my impressions but I'd rather do so once I'm done with it. Hi y'all! I read so many Tarlos fics this past month so I wanted to do a little highlight of some of my favorites! It was honestly very hard to narrow down the one shots but I tried 😂

Rain on Me by @ironheartwriter Rating: Explicit Word count: 6,622 Why I liked it: Lana has become such a dear friend in such a short time and I said one little thing in a tumblr ask response and something like two days later she busted out 6k words of pure magic! I love this fic, it's so sweet. We get to see our boys have some downtime to themselves and they truly truly deserve it!

breathing deeper than i've ever done by @your-catfish-friend Rating: Explicit Word count: 4,693 Why I liked it: This fic is so hot! This fic is heavy on senses, particularly the sense of smell. There's a part towards the end that really makes me insane where TK and Carlos are taking a shower together and it smells like "TK-and-Carlos" which makes me insane because they really are One.

Butterflies and Sky-High by @paperstorm Rating: Teen and up Word count: 8,031 Why I liked it: Demi!Carlos my beloved. I strongly subscribe to this headcanon and Andie, as always, you have executed it so beautifully! I loved this exploration of Carlos's labels, his spiral, his conversation with Paul, how he finally talked to TK about how he feels, it was all so beautiful.

This is The Sound of You Here and Now by @cold-blooded-jelly-doughnut Rating: Mature Word count: 3,040 Why I liked it: I was sick with a cold and asked for sick fics of my boys to get me through those trying times. J, thank you so much for delivering! This was beautiful and genuinely it made me cry. I love how they take care of and love each other.

Right Before Your Eyes by Goody Rating: Teen and up Word count: 19,894 Why I liked it: This one is so much fun! It feels like watching an episode, it is that realistic. Your characterization was amazing! Also poor TK, he suffers so much already and we just put him through more! But this was still really good! to build a home by @freneticfloetry Rating: Explicit Word count: 63,872 Why I liked it: I don't think I will ever recover from the feels this one gave me. I love Carlos exploration fics. I love how well the angst was balanced with fluff and spicier scenes! I'm working on a wip rn that has definitely been influenced by the layout and flow of this gorgeous fic. It's melancholic in the best way, beautiful, and true to character. I won't stop thinking about it any time soon.

Missing Moments by @paperstorm Works: 34 Complete: no Why I liked it: special shoutout to the fic from this series, Homeward Bound because I think about it often. I really, really love this series. Sometimes I confuse details from canon with details from these fics because they feel so canon to me. We needed the background scenes and you have more than delivered, Andie! Love this series so much and I can't wait to see what you do with the rest!

wherever you stray, I follow by @strandnreyes Works: 2 Complete: no Why I liked it: My latest obsession is this series. TK and Carlos are soulmates and now they get to live for eternity. Sometimes it's a bit bittersweet, especially in the second part, when Carlos thinks about all the changes that will happen to them someday, but they have each other and all the love and time in the world and it is beautiful. I love the setting, I love author Carlos, and I love how you adapted all the other characters and how seamlessly they fit into their roles in Castine. This au is gorgeous and I found myself wishing I didn't have to leave that world so soon. I can't wait for the next installment! I am excited to see where you might take it.

How to credit artists

TL;DR: Tell us the name of the person who made it.

Hi, all. There are instances when reposting art or using someone else's graphics (i.e. banners, dividers, etc) is acceptable, with the understanding that proper credit is given to the original creator. However, a lot of folks don't seem to know how to give proper credit to artists. I will explain here.

The most important thing to know is that the primary purpose of giving credit to the original creator is NOT to point out that you didn't make it. While that can be good to know, that's not the main objective. The primary purpose is to tell people who the actual creator is. If what you've written does not show people how to find the original creator, it is not proper credit. Examples of improper credit include:

"credit to the original artist!"

"found on Pinterest/Google/etc."

"art not mine"

Those do not tell me who made whatever it is you're reusing. That is not sufficient information. I should be able to read it and tell who made it.

So how do we credit people properly? Some artists may have very particular ways they'd like to be credited, in which case they will usually have this information listed somewhere, but most don't. If they're on tumblr, crediting them is as simple as listing their username/URL. If you were to credit me, for example, you would just say "art by @carbomcoco". Boom, that's it. We don't need a whole MLA-style bibliography if it's a social media post, just enough to tell us who made it. Contextualize it however is appropriate:

"pfp (profile picture) by @carbomcoco"

"cr: @carbomcoco"

"credit" <- with a hyperlink pointing to the account or original upload

If they're not on this website, it's very similar. Just add a slash after the @ or omit it so that it doesn't erroneously tag someone's tumblr, and say what website they're on.

"credit" <- with a hyperlink pointing to the external social media account or original upload

If the artist you're citing isn't a social media person, just list their name and the title of the piece (if it has one). Maybe link their portfolio if they have one and the site lets you use hyperlinks.

Does that make sense? Tell us who made it. Most of the time, that's all you gotta do. Question time

Q: What if I don't know who made the original artwork?

A: Try a reverse image search such as Google Lens. This will often help you find the original upload. If you can't find the original, there's a fairly good chance that you don't have the artist's permission to reuse it without crediting them. Furthermore, the more times it gets reuploaded without credit, the harder it's going to be for people to find who the original artist was. Now your post is probably showing up in reverse image searches too, and serving as another dead end. Someone else might save the image from your post and reupload it again to another site, once again without credit. Stop the spiral early.

Q: Why do I have to say who made it? Isn't it enough that people know it wasn't me?

A: Unfortunately, no. For artists who take commissions or sell prints, severing the connection between the art and the artist can impact their income. People can't support the creators of their favorite works if they don't know who that person is. Even for artists who don't make money from their art, if a piece of theirs goes viral and they aren't cited as the creator, they won't get the praise they deserve for making something that a lot of people really like. Sure, it's handy for people to know it wasn't you so that they don't erroneously try to commission you or anything, but the primary purpose is still to direct people to the original creator so that they can actually use that information.

Q: What about the fandom gifs and banners that I use to make my fanfiction/headcanon post look more aesthetic? Should I credit those, too?

A: Yes, even those. Don't just scroll through the tags, save gifs that gif-makers upload, and use them for your own posts without credit. Unless they've explicitly said you don't have to credit them, you should credit them. Again, reuploading uncredited material will make it even more difficult for people to figure out who made the original image. If crediting wrecks the aesthetic of your post, learn how to make your own gifs and graphics.

So, to recap:

If you didn't make it, say who did. Google is not an acceptable answer. Pinterest is not an acceptable answer. "not me" Is not an acceptable answer. "the original artist" is not an acceptable answer. Give a name.

If you don't know who made it, find out.

If you can't find out, don't reupload it.

Just saw your reply to the Ask about Akk and Ayan from The Eclipse and it was such a good read! (I've only been on Tumblr sporadically these past few weeks because of work, and it pains me I've missed so much good stuff.) 😔

Anyway, this got me thinking about Only Friends. I liked some bits but on the overall it disappointed me. I could ask about any ship in there, but let's focus on one: what do you think about TopMew?

Hello, good sir! I'm always honored when you take the time to reach out. I'll try to be thorough for your sake.

Just like with the last ask, I am putting a disclaimer here for the FB girlies, I am talking about Mew and Top as characters.

I think Top is a poorly-written character because the show never decided what they exactly wanted him to be, and this is best shown when Boeing returns. Boeing wants Mew to team up with him to fuck with Top, but we never get what Boeing wanted and what Top wants between either of them.

The show intentionally keeps Top enigmatic the entire time. We don't know if he's serious about the sleeping thing until the fire scene in the end. We all thought he was getting high at one point. So much of what's wrong with Top is wrapped up in what's going on with what Mew wants, and because Mew is also a difficult character to read we are never certain what the deal is with them.

All we really seem to understand about Mew is that he is a status chaser. His primary reason for being with Top seems to be the prestige that comes with having Top want to be with him, or how Top stepping out on him embarrasses him. In fact, the strongest actions Mew takes in the entire show are about punishing Boston or punishing Top. He can't even fully-commit to that. He gets bored and tired of it it, and then just decides to be with Top.

I just really don't get Mew by the end. What is the source of his beef with Boston? This child was raised by lesbians, so why does he have such hangups around purity? Why does he care so much about his perceived status when we know he wants to get fucked by pretty boys so bad that we end on a tag of him looking at Mix?

A good comparison for my issues with Top and Mew can be found in La Pluie with Saengtai and Phat. We understand the core of Saengtai's issues. He is a selfish reader of romantic fiction and virgin, who's punishing his rain-mate because his parents got a divorce. The fact that we know so little about Phat works in this story because we know what we need: he's a kind man who is doing everything he can to show Saengtai that he is willing to make a relationship work because he thinks Saengtai is worth it.

On the other hand, OF constantly asks us to question the motives of Top, and so by being so nonspecific about Mew and properly interrogating him as a character, we're asked to just make it up. When they go for the most dramatic stuff, such as kicking Boston and fighting in the pool, seducing Drake and his ears and eyebrows to lord over Boston, punching Ray out in a bar to later embarrass Top right before sex, smirking over Boston's issues with Atom, and then finally telling Boston to go fuck himself....What is the core of this? Why is he the leader of this group?

I don't get Mew, honestly. I think he is a wobbly character. Book is very pretty. He plays the virgin well. Force has a great face, and he plays a douche-who-might-not-want-to-be really well. I don't think these guys' characters are written on a solid base and so their characters never landed for me.

So yeah, I really don't like Mew, and I don't think Top feels real enough to have firm feelings about him. I can construct a version of them in my mind as that pair that's always fighting but won't break up. I can imagine that Top was serious about wanting to settle down and seeing real potential in the idea of Mew, but that's just me fanwanking. I don't think the show gave me enough solid emotional beats for me to connect anything real to them.

Hey! Yeah, I have a few tips I can share! This is gonna be long so beware!

I keep seeing this sentiment reiterated about larger creators. I get it, but I think everyone's missing one thing in regards to it: you already have access to the same audience they have. Just like you they grew their platform. Maybe it was a stroke of luck from a viral post or something, but they still had to start somewhere. What it takes is getting your content to hit the algorithm. That's all! So even if a larger creator never looks your way, you can still grow and curate an audience without their help. Small accounts are what make up big accounts after all.

You NEED good SEO. I'll talk about TikTok specifically. If you want a boost in visibility then get on Tik Tok. Properly tagging your content is the key to working the algorithm in your favor. I think people believe the more tags the better. No. The more accurately tagged, the better. The hashtags "TS4", "The Sims", and "The Sims 4" are always trending. You should always use those tags. The rest depends on the kind of content you're posting. I'll use my most viral video as an example. My Stormveil Chateau post on Tik Tok got 141.6K views, 22.3K likes. Since it was for a maxis match build I used the following tags: #thesims4 #sims4 #ts4 #simstok #ts4cc #fyp #sim #sims4tok #sims4maxismatch #sims4build #sims4builds #ts4build #ts4gameplay. Most of the tags are related to TS4 and TS4 builds. I wouldn't include anything about CAS, mods, etc. It wouldn't fit the post. Don't flood other tags in hopes of getting more views. It'll just bury your post under a bunch of random content. People have to be able to find your content.

Visually appealing content performs better, period. Y'all give the aesthetic girls hell but they know a thing or two about working the algorithm. I'll give them that! People like things that look nice. Now, that's not to say you need to purge all the color or character from your game. You don't have to follow a certain style trend. Curate your own personal style. Do what you do to the best of your ability. Whatever you post, just make sure it's good quality. Focus on sharpness, clarity, etc. If you wanna curate a particular look then go for it! But most importantly, having clear clean images or videos is the main thing you need. And you don't need a beast of a PC to do it. Sharpen your images and videos before you upload them using Capcut or something. Make sure the lighting is nice. Make sure it's a good resolution for the platform you're posting on. A quick tip: Adding dof to lower quality images makes it look better! See how the left photo looks more clear than the right? A little bit of depth of field helps so the pictures don't fall flat.

Pick a primary social to promote your secondary ones. Usually your primary social may be the one where you have your largest audience. For me, it was Tik Tok. On there I'd promote my Patreon, YouTube, and Tumblr. You just released some cc? Post something about it on Tik Tok, let your audience know they can find it on your Tumblr. Use one to promote the others.

Slow organic growth is STILL growth. Growing your audience is one beast, but maintaining it is a whole other thing. As someone who has gotten shout outs from larger creators, that initial boost ALWAYS dies down. And socials like YouTube will not hesitate to tell you "Hey boo, your shit's failing now. You kinda suck." Been there, felt that. Boosts from other creators and giveaways don't have much longevity. Most times that audience will leave. On occasion you may get a few who stick around, but most won't. That's why it's important to build your audience organically. Yes, it may take longer but they won't just dip out after a few weeks. Things take time to grow. Things take time to curate. Understand you are BUILDING something. It takes time!

And lastly- if you just really want the numbers and it doesn't matter what content you post, then here's what you do: Sell. Still use good SEO, still try to have high quality photos, but give people something to consume. People like to see what they can get. Post some builds, cc, whatever. If you're not a cc creator, then do cc finds, mod reviews, tutorials, build recommendations, lookbooks. People love a good cc haul. They wanna see what they can get. And that's not to say people that make this sort of content don't care about their content. I know they do and it's a lot of work! It still takes time and effort to curate. It's just HOT right now! Especially maxis match content. It ruffles less feathers because a wide array of the Sims community has a vicious vendetta against alpha cc. (Yeah ion know. They will "uncanny valley" and "just play IMVU' you to death. If I say what I think it is.. My people know.) But if you really just want thousands of followers, then there's a way to do it.

With all that said, I know how annoying it is to constantly hear to not focus on numbers but don't. CREATE FOR CREATION'S SAKE. Do it only because you enjoy it. Growth for me has come as a byproduct of me doing whatever the hell I wanted. I make Lykaia because I want to make Lykaia. I love that people love it but it is for me. Not to be an influencer, or to inspire, or to receive praise and accolades. I love everything about the process. Hell, I love the stress that comes with it! I have four scenes to film and I'm still not done editing the ones I have filmed. The episode is supposed to air on MONDAY. I fucking love working down to wire. It's stressful as hell but it feels good! If it's out there, the audience will soon follow. Always. Take your time. Be grateful for where you're at every step of the way. Enjoy the process! And remember that all it takes is one post to take off.

I know you're not the biggest Derek fan but I just rewatched some of his scenes with Scott and I got cracked up by how consistently he campaigns for the title of President Of The Scott McCall Fan Club.

He brings this energy every time he mentions Scott to somebody:

Really weird that people think he'd *ever* badmouth him to prop up characters he canonically doesn't give a single thought to.

First, I know you sent this as a three part message, but I found things to talk about in each one, so I'm going to answer them separately!

Second, I may not be the biggest Derek Hale Fan in the world, but I am a fan. I love a well-crafted redemption arc, and Derek's story is one of the better ones I've seen. In fact, I wanted more of it. But, for me, the key to a good redemption arc is that it is an arc. For Derek to grow and change and become a better person and for it to have meaning, he had to start out in a state that, frankly, wasn't. That's why I insist in my analyses that Derek was an antagonist in Season 1 and an outright villain in Season 2.

I do have seven pages of posts on Tumblr marked anti derek hale. I wish I wouldn't have to label them that, because I do not hate Canon Derek Hale. I simply recognize that he did terrible things, and that while they were understandable within context, that doesn't make them not terrible. Yet, his manipulative treatment of the teenagers of Beacon Hills, his embrace of lethal violence as his primary strategy, and his trauma-induced selfishness all served to fulfill his role as a foil to the heroic protagonist, Scott McCall, and fans shouldn't shy away from discussing this, but I have learned that Tumblr etiquette, when it is followed, demands that negative evaluations of a character's behavior be tagged properly so people can avoid it.

I wish some of the fans who hate Scott McCall would remember that, but I digress.

But I do recognize the weirdness you are describing. To me, Derek's admiration for Scott McCall is a natural evolution. He starts out in Season 1 trying to sell Scott on the realities of his life as a werewolf (even as Derek is using him): Scott's fate is to become like him. "So you and me, Scott - We're brothers now." Derek wants a new family, one that won't be destroyed, but through tragedy, pain, and violence he learns that you can't create one using brute force -- by coercively reshaping others into versions of himself. He sees that when Scott forms his pack, his family, Scott does it by accepting his friends as they are. Scott accepts Stiles with his sarcasm and insecurity. Scott accepts Allison, with her family and all that demands. Scott doesn't want Isaac to get hurt, remembers Kira's name, and tells Liam that he's not a monster. And Scott accepts Derek, even after Derek manipulated him, beat him, sold him out to Peter, and tried to kill innocents. So by the end of Season 6, Derek has instead sold himself the idea that his goal is to become like Scott. "You came back for Beacon Hills? No. Came back for you."

And that is what parts of the fandom can't stand. With all the tragedies Derek undergoes (manipulation by Peter which causes Paige's death, manipulation by Kate which causes his family's death, manipulation by Peter again which causes Laura's death, his execution of Peter, the disasters of his attempt at a pack), they want Derek to be redeemed without the necessity for change. In other words, Derek deserves nice things, not because he earned them, but as some sort of cosmic balancing for what he has suffered (and, frankly, his identity as an attractive white man and a 'bad boy').

But this misguided empathy runs counter to the themes of the show. Scott's the heroic protagonist not because he suffers more than anyone else (and he absolutely does suffer a lot, a fact that fandom uselessly tries to deny) but because he doesn't let that suffering, that injustice, determine who he is or who he cares about. This is what makes him a True Alpha, because he could have let Peter or Derek or Gerard or Deucalion determine his nature. He could have rejected Derek and Stiles and Liam and Theo and Malia and Jackson after they attacked and hurt him. He could have wallowed in the pain caused by his mother's rejection, or his father's absence, or Allison's death, or "Some of us are human!" He could have placed his own safety and well being first, and hid or ran from Kira or the Dead Pool or the Doctors or the Beast or Monroe. But he didn't. And that's what Derek saw, and that's what Derek learned.

Instead of acknowledging that learning, those choices, and that growth, certain parts of the fandom decide that what Derek should have done is resented Scott for not allowing Derek's pain to control Scott's life. They decide that Derek thinks Scott is stupid for not thinking of the world in terms of "us vs. them." They decide that Derek's repeated submission to the tragedies of his own life couldn't possibly have made him weak -- after all, he's rich, good-looking, white, and werewolf "nobility" -- and instead of what happened to him being the consequences of his own choices, he was bedeviled by the metaphysical forces known as 'the writers.' Oh, and Evil Tree Wizard Deaton and his Moron Tyrant Protege, Scott McCall.

Alright, here we are! Fade to Black's release day and four days until my sister gets married! And unfortunately, my book is nowhere in sight, still hasn't shipped and won't be here until the middle of the month. We'll see if I'm desperate enough to switch to the ebook version later. Now that I have a tablet that works properly with Kindle (unlike what I was using to read the Balan Wonderworld novel), that could be a good experience. I've taken care of myself, I've muted and blocked all the tags I could think of on Twitter and Tumblr, I'm gonna try to stay off the platforms (plus Instagram stories) regardless, and I've muted most of my Bendy related servers, so unless someone decides to ping me or DM me against my wishes, I am in a spoiler free zone. This is my carrot at the end of the stick, my reward for getting through this stressful weekend (because as happy as I am for my sister, travelling stresses me out big time, and this is four days of driving to and from the venue). I have been so on edge and stressed about this wedding, and this book is the only thing I have to look forward to when it's all over. So if I seem more irritated and on edge than usual, that's why. I'm spending a lot of time with family, managing a lot of relatives' expectations, and being there for my sister, and there isn't a lot of time for myself. My social battery is gonna be majorly out of whack. I won't be able to call anyone on Discord to geek out and unwind because that's too loud for the people I'm taking care of right now, and let's be real, that would probably be too much for me right now too. And I can't talk to a number of them anyway because everyone is gonna be excited about the book, and I don't want people not to talk about it because I'm there, it makes more sense for me to leave the equation until I'm ready. It's...a bit isolating. But it's where we are. Soon I'll be able to join everyone in the fun, but for now we need to get through this.

20 Questions for fic writers

Thanks for the tags for this @theearlgreymage and @wellbelesbian. I'm so slow at responding to these sorts of posts. Also, this one is going to be a little tricky, as I only have the one fic up on AO3, so I will be throwing in a few stats from my original novel, 'A Survivor's Revenge', as well.

How many works do you have on AO3?

Currently just the one, 'The Trails We Blaze'. But there is also ASR, my long term original novel, that I'm going to be focussing on again in November.

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

TTWB currently has a published word count of 20,059 words, with a total of 68,238. (the will only continue to grow - there's still so much of the original plot of El Dorado to adapt for this AU!) ASR on the other hand is already a monster. Before I split the original draft in two to make the first two books, the draft came in at around 130k, incomplete. Currently, the first book is sitting at 78,278 words.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Just Carry On. It's also the only fandom I read fanfic for.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

I'm still shocked by how well Trails is doing after only a month or so of posting, so thank you thank you THANK YOU for showing this fic so much love. 1,247 kudos is more than I thought the fic would ever get in its entirety, and we're barely scratching the surface of this chaotic journey.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I've loved replying to comments on this fic. It's so nice to know that the fic is resonating with people, and what everyone enjoys about the chapters. I especially love when people pick up on lines from canon, and even mention things I didn't consciously notice when I was writing that reference canon. And just getting to nerd out about the research that's gone into this fic. Anyone who knows me IRL knows how much of a classics nerd I am (unsurprising given I have two degrees), and it's been fun flexing those muscles again. It's also been wonderful seeing what resonates with people over here on tumblr when I share snippets of ASR for WIPsDays. Everyone in the CO fandom has been so supportive of me sharing those snippets, and I can't wait for the day when I get to share Lauren and her story properly with the world.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Trails is unlikely to be especially angsty (I haven't actually planned the ending, but if we're going by the ending of El Dorado, there's likely to be a happy ending. But I don't know, it's a mystery to me at this point!) ASR on the other hand ... Book 1 and book 2 have especially angsty endings. Where the series as a whole is concerned, let's just say I made myself cry when I wrote a line for a scene from the final book. It'll be multiple books of build up for a gut wrenching finale. Only one character is guaranteed to survive from the entire cast. You have been warned.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

None so far, but it's likely to be Trails. Only time will tell!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

So far, no. Everyone has been so so lovely with feedback about ASR and Trails!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I am an aro/ace bean who's not really experienced much, so whenever I try to write smut I struggle due to lack of practical experience (that's such a clinical way to put it, but brain no work right now, so that's the best way I can think to phrase it). But if I ever do write anything considered smutty, I try to focus on the emotions and sensations rather than the act itself. I love to read fic where the emotional intimacy is front and centre, but won't turn my nose up at reading some really raunchy debauched sex. As someone who's questioned her sexuality multiple times since first coming out I've lived under multiple labels before finding the one that suited me. Grey ace, ace bi-romantic, demisexual bi-romantic, I've thought all of them fit me at one time or another. It wasn't until last year that I realised dating wasn't working for me, it never would work for me, and that was ok. Aro/Ace isn't a zero sex/zero emotions identity, it's a spectrum in itself, and I've finally found something that suits me. Back on the topic of smut I write, I haven't written anything smutty for Trails yet beyond some heated kisses and heavy breathing. Maybe some rolling of hips. But I will be taking that M rating to its limit, don't you worry! As for ASR, again, nothing majorly smutty has been written, at least not what I would consider majorly smutty. Just a lot of emotional pining, and a bit of foreplay that starts to lead somewhere, and then DRAMA.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Back when I was first getting into creative writing (we're talking pre-teen/very early teens Jess, before ASR was even a vague concept), I wrote fanfic without even realising that's what I was doing. It was just a self insert series of stories that crossed over with multiple franchises, as well as straight up stealing plot points and tropes from other franchises. Will I tell you what they were? Absolutely not! And they will never see the light of day, because they are absolutely God-awful!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of, and I hope that never happens.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but I'd love it if someone ever wanted to. For ASR especially it would be incredible to see it translated and reach more people around the world. Seeing published authors announcing translation deals is something I aspire to!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not technically, but I suppose you could call Trails and Art-Collab fic, because Ashton's art is fucking fantastic!! Whenever I get to posting day and I wake up to see an art DM from her I get so excited! The style she's gone with for this fic was something we talked about for a while and she's just excellent at capturing the images and emotions I hope my writing is portraying. Ashton is a gem, and I am beyond lucky and don't know what I did to deserve her as a friend!!!

14. What's your favourite all time ship?

SnowBaz have been an obsession since mid-2021, and they show no signs of relinquishing the top spot in my heart when it comes to fandom ships. But it'd be remiss of me not to mention my OC's here. Lauren and Mike are my chaotic, dramatic, hopelessly and cluelessly in love MC's for ASR. You know how Baz pines in CO ... yeah, we're talking similar levels, if not slightly above that for Lauren and Mike. One of my favourite messages from my alpha reader was 'How in the hell did these idiots ever think their feelings were platonic?', and honestly, I don't even know. AND I WROTE THEM!

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I'm working on an epic high fantasy saga with a friend that we describe as 'Japanese mythology meets J R R Tolkein'. It's so fun writing with someone else, as we both have different strengths. Nori is very much at home with the darker elements, the world building, and character development, whilst I love writing the character relationships, romances, and political manoeuvrings. It's just difficult when you're in different parts of the country, and both have other WIPs you're working on. Maybe one day this saga will see the light of day.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I used to think this was a weakness, but since working on ASR edits I think I've become better attriting action sequences. At least, the comments on Trails have led me to believe this. I hope. Since writing that opening chase scene through Southwark it's really bolstered my confidence. But I think my main strength is dialogue full of banter and flirting. Give me a chance to have two characters in a room just bouncing off each other. No need for dialogue tags, just back and forth dialogue. Flirty dialogue is some of my favourite to write, and both SnowBaz and Lauren and Mike allow me to do this in spades! I also think writing pining is a strength, but that is a double edged sword that can cut the wielder if not used sparingly. Pining is great, when not overdone, and I'm praying I've not overdone it with Trails.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Action and intimate sequences are still aspects of writing I struggle with, and I'll tell you why. Pacing. Pacing is my nemesis. I just want to get from point A to point B and move on to the next scene. I know first drafts don't have to be perfect, but yeah ... pacing in certain scenes within first drafts is my biggest struggle.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I had to work out how I was going to tackle this for Trails with the most recent chapters I've been writing. HOW DO YOU WRITE A LANGUAGE THAT DOESN'T EVEN EXIST, AND IN YOUR FIC HAS BEEN DEAD FOR MILLENNIA? Atlantean has been a pain to try and work out, and I'm still figuring out a way to write the language itself in dialogue. I really want to try and get some actual Ancient Greek in here as well at some point, so if anyone wants to help translate some riddles and prophecies for me, hit me up! I'm a bad Classicist and never learnt any ancient languages!

20. Favourite fic you've written?

Trails is my only published fanfic, therefore it is my favourite. But also I love the source material (both 'Carry On' and 'The Road to El Dorado) so much. But my favourite fiction I've written, out of all the original ideas and bad fanfic, has to be 'A Survivor's Revenge'. These characters and their story have been on my mind for the last fourteen years in some form or another, they are my babies, and I don't know what my life would look like without them in it. Lauren is my favourite morally grey chaos gremlin, and I'm so glad other people like reading about her whenever I share snippets.

No Mistle but you like Avallac'h

Probably because Avallac'h isn't a rapist. Unlike Mistle and Kayleigh, but thanks for letting me know that you were so butthurt by my personal opinion that you had to go scrolling through my blog to look for something to get angry over. I don't care if you ship Mistle and Ciri. You can go on your marry shipping way. I am literally not stopping you from doing that by posting my own opinion on my own blog. Properly tagged as anti-Mistle and all. Tumblr has made it MUCH easier to blacklist tags you don't like than it was back in the day. I suggest you do that. And before you go 'blah, blah blah forced baby blah blah' that was Auberon that wanted that baby. The king of the elves whose word is law. We are never really made aware of Avallac'h's wants or intentions one way or another. We do know however that his first action in the book is to help Geralt save his friends. He didn't HAVE to do that. He had all the reason in the world to hate humans and yet he helped Geralt's party. He was always patient, kind and considerate with Ciri... and you know... didn't rape her. Unlike Mistle. So... let's deep dive using my favorite tool... quotes directly from the book. Shall we?

First things first... Avallac'h chides her for being a brat. She's going around smashing things like a little kid. She's clearly embarrassed when he does this... so what does he do then? He 'quickly' makes an effort to comfort her. He didn't need to do that.

Again, he's blowing off the fact she broke priceless elven artifacts, so she won't feel bad. He is being considerate of her feelings. He's even 'lowered' himself by using continent Hen Ilinge instead of Ellylon. He didn't have to do that.

Avallac'h even defends her against Eredin. He didn't have to do that.

When Ciri is troubled that the King wouldn't sleep with her she runs right to Avallac'h. She clearly trusts him enough to come to him first with her problems every time. He patiently listens to her, but we can also tell something is bothering him. Maybe he doesn't like she has to do this. Maybe he's afraid he'll have to use the lab. We'll never know. But what do we know? He didn't have to hear her out or listen to her problems. He didn't have to do that.

This is the first time we actually see something other than stoic Avallac'h. 'Beware you don't know what you're risking' it isn't a threat. He's worried.

Here Ciri said really hurtful things to him if you know how much he really, truly seemed to love Lara. Even though Lara betrayed him. What does he do? Instantly forgives her and hugs her... telling her he's already forgotten it. He didn't have to do that. I would wager that for some reason... Avallac'h does care for her otherwise he wouldn't have done all these things.

Here for reference is Auberon threatening Ciri and being a total dickwad. Here we discover why Avallac'h was so keen to make sure she didn't piss off the king. Auberson doesn't just not care for humans he outright hates them and as seen later slaughtered them all. Although to be entirely fair in this regard we don't know the reason for that. Perhaps in retaliation for Lara his daughter. Yea, you read that right. Lara was his daughter so that makes Ciri his.... yeah, ew.

After her fight with Auberon Avallac'h mysteriously disappeared. Hmmm... why, oh why could that be? He's been there every other time...

Eredin is genuinely surprised so it couldn't have been him. Perhaps Avallac'h poisoned the king to protect Ciri.

Even Eredin who hates Avallac'h admits that Avallac'h has a certain code of honor.

Hey? You want to know a little thing? Not only do I think that your dedication to Minthara rivals what you had and felt for our beloved Cersei; I sometimes actually think that your dedication for Minthara surpasses it entirely. But seeing this and your reactions to Larian's decisions now, I think this is absolute vehement truth of that. But, with that, I want to point out an extra not-so-little light that's tied to that realization: I don't think that any of us get sad, angry or emotionally invested in any way, if we don't harbor a whole lot of care, love and understanding for these characters that we choose to write. I don't think you'd be angry or bummed out if you didn't care a whole fucking ton for Minthara, Mel. And that's why I insist on seeing you write her just as much as you always have, if not more from hereon out. That character? Deserves every ounce of dedication that you feel for her on the daily. Every time that you send me anything pertaining to her, whether it's a silly meme, a headcanon, an elaboration of canon, a random TikTok (and you know I don't click those easily! But I do for you), or the most gorgeous fanart— I know you're sitting there with the biggest smile on your face, I can hear it clear as day every single time. And I need that to continue, I think she deserves that, and I know that you definitely do. Mel, it's my firm belief and reality that Minthara couldn't have possibly found a better mun to write her than you. An incredible fighter like her, deserves an even stronger fighter like you, to carry her torch throughout Tumblr and write her in every possible way any of us can ever imagine.
