Starting off the new year with I think the most background heavy piece I've ever made! I think Rainwings and Nightwings would celebrate their traditional holidays together after the events of The brightest night. So this drawing is meant to show their cultures kind of blending together during a very joyful time. I remember talking about this concept with someone on tumblr a year ago but when I went back through my posts I couldn't for the life of me find it - so if your reading this, I remember you and this drawing stems from that conversation so thank you!

#my art #got the pics from the submechanophobia subreddit but these machines arent submerged at all... oh well #more importantly: i figured out that the best for me to (quickly) paint is so lay down colors first with rather opaque flat brush #and Then use a scratchy bristly brush for texture and blending. also the obligatory rake brush #but that way you get really clear edges and blocks of color; that why the first and last one turned out the best!!!!#i love it when doing studies actually helps!!!!

#tumblr is actually really good for posting pc-98 screens because the standard resolution used to display images on tumblr is 540px wide #pc-98 has an internal resolution of 640 px wide #so instead of being enlarged the images are slightly reduced in size from the native resolution #this is why the pixels blend so well together #so instead of all the dithering being incredibly obvious it just looks like a standard resolution image with reduced colors #that's why they always look so appealing

I genuinely gotta wonder sometimes if I’ve only seen the surprisingly good examples of digital anime in the early 2000s or if people really like to cherry pick cause don’t get me wrong the shift to digital wasn’t graceful even if it’s not entirely like when they first started making anime even if they had to relearn a lot but i genuinely cannot see any of the early 2000s animes I’ve watched so far as bad visually wise.

New Getter? Already said enough why I don’t think it look as bad as people think.

Kikaider? Definitely got a little crustier after the first show but ngl I didn’t even know it was digital when I first watched for a bit.

Big O season 2? Yeah the look of season 1 appeals to me more but wow it translated into digital better then you’d expect.

Maybe it’s just cause these all have cartoony or stylized enough art styles to translate well into digital even for the first time they were animated? Idk, really gotta find more early digital animes to watch to compare the crust.

#i just shoved a big orange layer on multiply on top of everythinggg #then thought well keta start erasing to make the lights and then i thought #why not make it SHINIER #so i put another layer with an add blending mode and started carving some lights #based on a cool drawing with blocky and sharp angles on the shadows that made me fall in love #and its WORKING???????#no way #the art gods have blessed me #i will not waste it 🙏#i will study shadows properly after this one i prommy #rambles
