"Found out" set in kind of a made-up chapter where the girls are in trouble, or something.
#witch hat tag#orufrey#i hate having a strong cinematic image in your mind for months..working hours on it..& at the end looking you have to be like “Sure. :/"#i'm especially unsatisfied with the beginning and the end and how i can't get eyebrows to work as i want#but i dont care any more... this is probably the comic that has given me the most trouble ever i just dont care#i barely even care whatsoever if anyone even sees this..Ugh..but at least i can move on to the next era now#i'm just annoyed i cant get out good enough my image of qifrey flinching bc he thinks oru will hit him but then he is not hit#i feel like sensei will do something along these lines. i want to see what she will do.#there are also other variations i have in my mind. i just want to know#i just don't want it to happen with qifrey on his deathbed or something. but it possibly will. I DONT EVEN KNOW.#i have another very cinematic image in my mind for something sort of along those lines which i will do soon. it never ends...#btw after this is probably my fics. yeah.... i think it has to be my fics. jasmine sort of goes along these lines#i need that space for dialogue. look - i'm a writer. this is HARD for me. so i am really glad i had the space and freedom of words#to process all the feelings. but i tried to get something out in a quick visual space too. <- me defending myself to myself at cai court#anyway going along the lines of 'Jasmine' - they talk this out and argue and cry and oru pushes the hat at him and tells him#why not just erase every memory i have of you then. That would be easier for us all wouldn't it?#they kiss and sob and kiss and lie outside in the flowers for many hours in that one. and then there's 'Deep End' where it turns out#way way way way more time and words is needed for this actually and that's upsetting for everyone.#the destruction of the hat is certainly another path to take. Can you make this work without that hat going up in flames?#something you have always had and have been clinging to will have to be destroyed. You have to lose something now. This is the crux qifrey#I CANT GET IT OUT IN ONE COMIC!!! I CANT DRAW IT OUT!!!! I NEEDED THOSE FICS!!!! PRAISE WORDS!!!! whatever im going to have dinner now

i don't feel good
really really really hate how many other IS people keep getting intentionally targeted by tools or blogs which position themselves as "keeping tr/ans people safe!!!!!!" just because some of us have experiences that make per/risex v. per/isex discourse points totally moot. almost like being tr/ans doesn't prevent you from being bigoted or something. huh
#dis.txt#like at this point it's why i just use general terms and not modality unless i'm talking abt healthcare and even then....#just. constant reminders that i am not in the ''in-group'' and i never can be. can't even blame myself for thinking abt-#my mod/ality and just blanking. anything i could consider accurate is ''valor stealing'' or ''contradictory and therefore fake''#good job guys! you really needed to show IS ppl that we're controversial freaks you hate! not like we didn't already know that!#and to be quite fucking honest. it's so clear what they're doing when they do it alongside their glaring hatred of ''wrong'' tr/ans ppl#no matter What. regardless of variation. we are always seen as masculinized evil predators. here to dilute your community and hurt you#you see it with tm/ascs in general. with tf/ems who don't conform to one specific ideal. to just. anyone who isn't milquetoast White Tra/ns#god fucking forbid one of us annoying hermaphrodites reminds you of how mistreated and scared and unloved we are#god forbid you aren't the most oppressed person in the room! that you don't hold the One True Experience!!!#also the fact that the majority of pe/risex ppl saying this are the type of mf who will use a direct synonym for hermaphrodite and then say#that IS people with certain assignments or modalities cannot say it? but you can? you can't be talking like that per/isex blogger#or taking our historical figures and going ''omg tr/ans icon!!!!'' and intentionally erasing us. or defending ppl like john fucking money??#maybe i'm just especially hurt because i called myself tr/ans b4 i called myself anything else. i'm talking ''tried to come out at 13''#so it feels like when you find out your family that you were raised with has a high percentage of shitheads during the holidays. it hurts!#and to be frank. this is the reason why so many of us want to die or feel unlovable and unsafe in queer spaces. even if we are queer#this is a reason why some fall into predatory groups or self-harm in a search for acceptance and love. and why so many of us decide to die#i cannot tell you how hopeless it feels. especially as someone who was already abused by other queer ppl already. i feel like an animal

You’re an angel, i’m a dog.
Pairing: Lucanis/Rook Lucanis/Rook/Spite
TW: injury detail, heavy sexual references, abuse, grief, suicidal idolisation, implied non con, spite being a freak, possession, substances.
Word count: around 5000
Chapter: 2/?
2 - DEVIL LIKE ME
Tumblr media
— Rook is injured, Lucanis tries to help.
Lucanis - Bold
Spite - Italics
We've been waiting for this haven't we.
Spites familiar voice echos in Lucanis's head, the feral creatures nails claw his mind as the shadow figure takes form beside him.
Rook tentatively approaches as Lucanis glances around the room before pulling over a large crate for him to sit on and gesturing for Rook to take the armchair opposite him. Even though the crate is slightly too small for him and a few inches shorter than the chair it manages to hold his weight and leaves him eye level with her.
She's watching him and he moves the equipment to one side, careful to pick up any glass shards as he piles tubes and viles into a corner and stacks the books clearing the space between them. His face remains a mask of ease but she can't help but notice the small bead of sweat that forms at his brow. When was the last time he had hosted a girl in his room? He couldn't remember. Come to think of it, when was the last time Lucanis had hosted anyone in his room?
Lucanis shifts in his seat, crossing and uncrossing his arms. He had always been bad at making small talk but now he felt like he'd forgotten how to speak entirely. After a moment the silence is broken by a low humming noise, some variation of a song his grandmother would sing to him many years ago. The noise fades in and out but Rook dosent react, Lucanis is the only one who can hear it.
Quiet.
The girl is studying he realises. Head cocked to one side she watches how he moves and breathes, her guard his up, her discomfort increasing and yet she dosent make a move to leave.
"So..." Rook rests her arms on the oversized chair, one knee crossed other the other, fingers tapping on the edge. "Are you going to tell me how you did that thing out there." She raises her hand and seems to be trying to project her power but all he sees is empty air.
He had felt her magic approaching of course, the thrum of power had given him plenty of warning. The spell she had encountered had taken almost a decade to perfect, he had spent countless hours working on it with his Cousin. The barrier could be locked to one room and only lasted as long as the creator was present. It was supposed to keep out any magic users that didn't possess the Dellamorte bloodline. Clearly it was faulty if Rook had gotten through. He'd have to ask Illario about that when he next saw him.
"I am not entirely sure." Lucanis takes in the way her eyes waver, she doesn't seem annoyed that the spell had managed to stuff her magic but curious, perhaps slightly hopeful? "I do not use many spells, my specialities lie more in weapons and potions. My cousin helped with this one, you might have seen him around.”
She can see that from the display on his desk to the objects that fill his room and line the shelves, a few swords hanging on rusty nails that stick out of the stone.
"Ah, the handsome one." Rook recalls, as he shoots her an unamused look. "So could you, create a spell or a potion to stop it?"
"Why would you want to stop it?" He queries watching the way her hand goes to a chain around her neck, the small opaque crystal attached to it resting just between her breasts, Lucanis moves his eyes away quickly. His gaze goes back to her face then to the wall behind her as he avoids her eye contact.
He had seen the necklace before but had never gotten a good view of it, in fact he could not recall a time he seen her without it. No bigger than a marble, the edges jagged but dull enough to not cut into her skin. Whatever it was it meant something to her. Another piece of the puzzle.
"I mean, to help control it. Like the way your daggers seem to hold power, I can't have another mission go sideways because of me." A half truth.
He does not have to look her in the eyes to know that's not exactly what she meant.
"Perhaps you should ask Emmrich about that kind of stuff, maybe he could make you some sort of object to hone your energy."
In his time here Lucanis had seen the man do incredible things with his gifts, he had even come to him for help occasionally to identify any objects found whilst out on missions.
"I don't think that would work." Her lips pull into a grimace as she continues to fiddle with the silver chain. "And besides i'm not really sure how to feel about the old man, he frightens me a bit." Rook was both equal parts unsettled and intrigued by the man and his skeletal companion.
Lucanis raises an eyebrow but lets her talk.
"Don't tell him I said that though, you two are friends right?"
She recalls the few times she had watched Lucanis enjoying himself over dinner and drinks, in the library studying whatever it was he was searching for. Out of everyone here the two men seemed to click, both quiet and strange in their own way.
"I do not know him that well." Lucanis does not have friends. He is here to complete his contract and keep his home safe, that’s all.
Misunderstanding his blunt reply as sarcasm, Rook laughs. It's muffled by a hand over her mouth.
His chest tightens, wondering what it would sound like to hear a full true laugh from her. He wanted to find out. There was no question that Rook was attractive. Her elven features mixed the human way she spoke and carried herself made most people find her off putting. She tried to make herself invisible, had spent her first weeks at the Lighthouse brushing off everyone's attempts of inclusion but Lucanis had seen the way she made their companions laugh without even trying, the way her smile lit up a room. She didn't even have to try, he couldn't stand it.
Had the room always felt this small? Of course it had he was sleeping in a dammed storage closet for gods sake.
The desire that coiled low in his stomach was not as easy to ignore now as it was when he'd first laid eyes on her. All it takes is one moment of wanting and a mirror image of Lucanis draped in shadows manifests through the table. The creature contorts and twits its body, limbs cracking into place until it's crouched beside Rook. Lucanis closes his eyes reaching deep inside to sever that tie between man and demon but it's already started to knot. The door a-jar.
Lucanis grits his teeth as Spite inspects her, but the more he tries to shut him out the more the demon takes form. His discomfort and Rook's distraction only seems to make Spite more excited as it moves from side to side head twisting like a starved animal about to feast.
I can see why you're so fascinated by her. Such a pretty little thing.
Spites hand is less than an inch away from caressing Rook's cheek, hand going, lower, lower, until it comes to rest just below where Lucanis can't see under the table. Lucanis lets out a disgruntled cough, clearing his throat then scoots his crate back from table.
Spite's eyes snap up at him, and it lets out a laugh the look of hunger fading into a feline grin.
Leave us. Do. Not. Touch her.
You can't make me.
If you're going to stay, be quiet and behave.
Spite lets out a whine and glares back at him but obeys hands up in surrender as those glowing eyes ablaze. Some days Lucanis could push him out if he really tried. It would take all his strength and then some but each day was different. Recently the active days seemed to be outweighing the quiet ones. It had taken him years to train his mind against the demon, to build up walls and keep the doors locked. But no matter how badly Lucanis wanted him gone he would always let Spite back in.
There was no one without the other, they depended on each-other for survival. He had wasted almost his entire life trying to find a cure for this curse placed upon him and had come to accept the grim fact that if he wanted to live, Spite would be along for the ride.
Fine, fine. She's all yours. I won't touch her...unless she asks us to.
Lucanis stands to his full height kicking back the crate, he moves through the shadow demon purposefully causing the the smoke to separate. As Spite's form reconstructs itself it watches him as he places two china cups onto the table, both different sizes and designs. Rook lets out a small yawn as she waits, utterly unaware of the domestic currently playing out between the demon and the man as she watches Lucanis. There's a clattering of boxes being moved and rearranged then he lights a flame under what appears to be some sort of homemade stove. After a few minutes he returns with a steaming pot and the smell of coffee fills the small room.
Rook holds out her cup for him as he pours out the dark brown liquid until it reaches the top then fills his own. Now that he's closer she can see the black power under his nails, a cluster of tiny white scars standing out in contrast against his tan skin. She wants to ask about the experiment he was doing when she had interrupted him earlier or pry more about her magic but it's late and she's exhausted. Shes beginning to ajust to the dim candle light, the subtle warmth the flames gave off as the occasional gust of cold air moved past her and the presence of the man sitting opposite her.
Sure, it was a bit awkward and she wasn't sure if he was utterly repulsed by her or just had invited her out of civility but Rook had been searching for a distraction from her restless sleep and she had found one. They didn't need to speak, to fill the silence, just being in each others presence was enough. Maybe it was the adrenaline wearing off that had made her feelings intangible but could swear she felt a strange sort of comfort when she was with him.
Instead of voicing the million questions she yearned to have answered Rook leans back in her seat against the worn velvet and lets the cup warm her hands as raises the it in a thanks then takes a sip. It's bitter and warm, not hot enough to burn but the taste leaves an unwelcome flavour on her tongue. The disgusted expression on her face forms because she can stop it. Lucanis is waiting for her reaction.
"What? No milk or sugar?" Rook's voice sounds strained as she gulps down the liquid mid sentence forcing herself to take another sip.
She'd had coffee before, at the training camp it was valued as much as gold. But that had been a watered down version, reheated and shared between large groups, whatever Lucanis had was strong and fresh. Perhaps this was another thing she'd have to adjust to.
The corner of Lucanis's mouth raises, those full lips forming an almost smile as he watches her drink before trying his own.
"I like it black." He states before refilling his cup.
Rook hides another nervous laugh and gives him in a look that says of course you do. She would not make a very good spy he thinks.
She coughs as she reaches the bottom of the cup wiping a hand over her mouth before placing it down and pushing it slightly away from her. A fake smile of gratitude plastered across her face.
"Thanks for the coffee, and the company."
Lucanis's doesn’t seem to register the comment, his gaze entirely focused on the spot just behind where she sits, eyes occasionally flicking to check that she hadn't moved then back again to not so empty space. The humming song starts again.
There an obviously tension between Rook and Lucanis but neither of them quite wants the moment to end. Lucanis had never been very good at making friends, hell, he struggled enough as it was to keep loose acquaintances. But since he would be staying here for the foreseeable future he might as well try to be civil with her. He couldn't leave now, not when he was so close to finding a cure, not when he and his cousin had a chance at freedom, not when this girl was before him could be the key to everything. Regardless of his intentions Rook had played a part in his rescue and he would be indebted to her until the contract was completed.
I think she's starting you like you. Thats a first, should we tell her what we really are?
I thought you were staying quiet.
How can I when I can hear all your thoughts. I wonder what she would say if you told her what you want to do to her-
Spite seems to forget what it was saying as the creature stops mid taunt, turning in a circle sniffing the air its hollow eyes turn from Lucanis to Rook and back again.
Oh, this is going to be fun.
Lucanis's temple is throbbing as he rubs the palm of his hand against it trying to mask the feeling with more questions. If he could keep her talking for long enough maybe he could gain back enough control for Spite to leave them.
"When you have these nightmares, what do you see. Tell me about them."
Straight to the point then. Rook thinks, it would be easy for her to lie about it but she has nothing to lose.
"You want me to help you or not?" Lucanis barks out when Rook doesn't immediately answer. He doesn't mean for his tone to come out like that, cruel and disingenuous. Every step he makes towards Rook feels like another two back into the dark.
"Sorry-" She starts only to be cut off by his raised hand.
"Stop apologising." He shuts her down. "Just start from the beginning, anything you can remember might help us to better understand your...situation. When did they start."
She should be sorry, she was a Mage who had killed tens, if not hundreds of innocent people. Even if she had been following orders, even if it had been an accident, she had killed, no man would ever mourn one less Mage in the world.
You have more blood on your hands than she does.
I take no pleasure in killing, unlike you.
It’s impolite to lie Lucanis. I know you get off on it as much as I do. Oh look you've made her cry…
Spites observation panics him for a moment but when he looks at her there's no tears present. The only evidence of sadness is a fait sheen to her pale eyes, that haunted look he had seen before in the mirror on his own face. Greif.
As Rook recalls her nightmares and the memories that interlinked them she wished, not for the first time that they had left her to die in that rubble. How was it fair that the gods got to pick and choose who gets the power of creation, of life and who gets that of death and destruction. How she longed to be able to bring her friends back from the dead, reach down upon the earth and feel the roots grow.
"I think they must have started when I was a child but I could never remember anything, only waking up to find myself screaming. The night after the first time my magic manifested there was a thunderstorm, I started dreaming about this woman, I can't recall her face but it was like she was glowing in green flame."
Lucanis's focus is wavering as he tries to hang onto each of her words, something about green flames, a wolf, the sound of thunder, demons and the veil. His time is running out. The pain was behind his eyes now, vision blurring as he blinked over and over trying to shut it out.
"Lucanis." Rooks voice brings him back for a moment. "Are you alright?"
Smells like blood.
Get out of my head.
Can't you smell it? Let us taste her, just this once.
I said, GET OUT.
But Spite was right. The metallic tang in the air was undeniable, he could smell it. A shudder of dread snapped him back into reality. He was looking at her how, really looking. Had Rook always looked this pale? Her eyes were hollow, sunken in slightly and ringed with grey. Her lips parted as she paused mid sentence.
"You are bleeding." Lucanis's voice startles her as she has a moment of confusion before the realisation sets in.
She shifts the seat back a few inches looking down at herself before placing her hand to where the black shirt was sticking to her side. When she brings it away her palm is covered with a fresh coating of blood. Her mouth forms a silent 'oh' as she places her hand back against the wet shirt and holds it in place.
Before Lucanis can stop her she stands up swaying slightly using her free hand to steady herself against the table as he rushes to her side, the crate he was sat on lets out a screech against the stone as he flys across the room towards her.
Told you I smelled blood.
"LEAVE US." He doesn't mean for those words to be voiced aloud. Lucanis's voice comes out through gritted teeth, if Rook notices him speaking to the air she doesn't react - too focused on trying not to pass out.
It's not the blood that makes Lucanis feel like he's going to throw up but what comes after. This is how Spite feeds, the demon can't touch her in its usual state but pain, death and bloodshed calls to it the way a holy man might call upon the gods. When in battle the bond between Spite and Lucanis is forged from violence, all it takes is for the first kill to commence and then two become one. Most days the demon can do little more than cause him headaches with taunts and mind games but in battle Spite can take over fully possessing him and using Lucanis's body as a vessel for violence.
He wasn't sure if Rook's injuries would be enough to let Spite in all the way there was no rule book for this kind of thing but he didn't dare send her away. Not when she was in so much pain, not when seeing her in pain caused him so much.
With one arm under hers and the one carefully hooked around her waist so not to touch the wound he guides her to the table and holds up her weight against his own until her legs secure against it, the table is low enough that when he pushes her back slightly she's able to sit on it without much strain.
"Keep pressure on the wound." He leaves her for just a moment hurrying across the room and pouring out something that look like water onto his hands then wiping them clean on his sheets.
Lucanis was not healer but had learnt survival young and patched himself up after many a battle. He had been nine the first time he'd had to fix a dislocated bone, thirteen when he learnt how to stitch his own wounds.
Rook winces as she feels the throbbing pain grow, her skin heating as sweat begins to coat her skin. She has no idea how long it’s been bleeding or when the stitches had ripped. It was as if until she saw the blood there had been no pain and now it felt like she had an arrow in her side all over again.
When Lucanis returns he's holding a pile of clean cloth and a bottle of clear liquid. "I'll need to redress the wound and clean it."
Rook continues to look down at her side fingers now slick with her own blood she acknowledges him with a faint noise that he can’t make out.
"I need you to look at me. I don't think Varric will forgive me if I let you bleed out on my table." That earns a pained laugh. "This is going hurt." He adds.
"Okay." She nods again this time meeting his eye as Lucanis hand holds her chin to look at him. Defiance lives in her eyes but she agrees to let him help her, this is a woman who does not want to be pitied or saved. He knows exactly how that feels.
Lucanis lets her go and pushes his sleeves up further until the material can't go any higher up his biceps. With little effort he rips the cloth into strips and places it onto the table beside her along with the bottle. Slowly, cautiously, he stands infront of her assessing the situation. Rook moves her body slightly so that she's turned half to the side giving him better actress to her and her hand beings to pull up the bottom of her shirt.
"Do you want me to stop, it's not too late. I can wake one of the others-"
"No it's fine." Rook cuts him off. "It really doesn't hurt that much." Her face says otherwise.
It would be easier for him to remove her top completely but the thin material leaves little to imagination, it's clear Rook wears nothing underneath. Instead Lucanis pulls a dagger from his belt and cuts away at the ruined fabric leaving only enough to cover her. The bulk of the bandages are almost completely soaked through. As he unbinds them from her ribs and throws them onto a pile on the floor Rook swears when the wound is exposed to the cold air.
We could have her right now, on this table.
"It's not as bad as I thought, but you're to need to sit still for the next part. Drink this." He holds the bottle up to her lips and lifts it so she can drink, one hand underneath to catch anything that spills.
Rook splutters and coughs as it burns the back of her throat but takes a few gulps as Lucanis lets out a loose a breath.
With the old bandages removed and blood wiped clean he can now see only three out of the eight stitches had torn open, and other than the irritated red skin around the wound there’s no sign of infection.
"That was fucking disgusting. Do me a favour and just keep talking. If I don't pass out from this, I might die if you serve me anymore beverages." Rook states, eyes closed as she lets out a low whimper whilst Lucanis begins to wipe away the blood. “And if I die.” As grits her teeth. “I will come back and fucking haunt you.”
Such dirty words for such a pretty mouth.
Don’t look at her.
Imagine the sweet sounds she would make.
"I'm not very good at talking." Lucanis confesses, undeterred by her empty threats.
He doubts very much that she would want to hear about how he'd spent almost his entire childhood being experimented on in a cage by the only maternal figure he'd never known.
"Oh i've noticed." Her eyes are wide and alert now, pupils dilating. "Seriously say anything, sing a song tell me a story, make something up. Tell me about possessed life, I bet he's here isn't he, the demon, is he here? Is he a he?"
Rook might not have been thinking clearly to start but now she’s racking her brain for everything she learnt about this man so far. Not only was she about to let an almost stranger - at best coworker, operate on her in a storage cupboard she was about to let a man possessed by a demon to do it. Other than overhearing Neve refer to the demon as 'Spite' once she had no idea if that was its name or what it even was.
Did demons even have pronouns?
"It's here, it likes the blood." If Lucanis was trying to comfort her he was failing miserably.
From the corner of his eye Lucanis can see spite crouching beneath the table, its slightly see through finger poking at the small pool of blood on the ground. Despite the finger going through the blood and stone floor Spite puts it into its mouth and pretends to lick the finger clean.
Delicious.
"Great, well there's plenty of that here. Sounds like a charming guy." Rook lets her head fall back and stares up at the ceiling as she waits for Lucanis to fishing threading the needle.
Lucanis bites down on his bottom lip as he finishes threading the needle then sterilises the wound with what smells like alcohol. He dabs at the blood with no warning and she clutches back as it stings sending shivers down her spine that make her want to kick him.
"What does it feel like?" She asks the corners of her eyes glistening but again, no tears fall.
"At first I thought my soul had been split in half. But now, it’s more like having two sets of hands instead of one, eyes in the back of my head. The power is…unimaginable."
He pulls her skin together holding the flesh with a forefinger and thumb as the needle pushes through for the first stitch. Over rooks deep breathing he swears the faint sound of thunder booms overhead.
"I have heard sories of demons that can possess men. The Grey Wardens knew a lot about dark magic. How did you come to be this way? I mean what happened to you. You weren't born like this, were you?" Rook seems to be sitting straighter now, the tonic kicking in and numbing some of the pain.
"That-Is none of your concern."
"Does it hurt?" Rook knows she should probably change subjects from the strain in his voice but when she looks up at him the answer is written all over his face.
"Yes and no." The look of agony is gone in seconds and he's back to concentrating on her wound.
His hair despite being tied back falls over his shoulder as is long enough that she feels it brush against her bare skin. She can feel his warm breath against her torso and the occasional faint tickle of his beard as he gets too close.
"Does it hurt right now?" Rook wonders looking around the room as if she would find a demon spawn hiding in the shadows, but she sees nothing.
"You don't have to worry about me. You are the one bleeding."
The second stitch is though.
"I'm bleeding all over your bedroom and you won't even tell me how you got possessed by a creepy demon, wow." Rook tries to make an exaggerated gasping sound but it's cut short as the third stitch goes though and the wind is knocked out of her. "Fucking ouch."
"You are very dramatic." He was glad she couldn't see his faint smile as he continued to work.
This was good, if she’s was coherent enough to make jokes and swear at him hopefully she wouldn’t pass out anytime soon. Lucanis makes a mental note that Rook often uses humour as cover when she's hurt.
The pain has faded to a dull ache now, Rooks body already starting to feel a bit stronger with each passing moment but her mind is still hazy. She’s trying to stay awake but all she can think about was how wants him to never stop talking. Each word keeps her tethered to this plane. That accent, she could listen to it forever.
“We are almost done.” Lucanis moves closer to her - his large body is almost completely covering hers as he leans so that he can tie the bandages around her back. He stops half way realising he can't quite reach it without the possibility of hurting her. Rook feels his hand lightly touching her shoulder indicating which way she needs to move as she swings her legs back round to give him better access.
Now Rook sits on the other side as he leans over, legs hanging over the table, back facing him. He doesn't mean to stare when he looks down at her exposed back but there's no helping it as his eyes travel from the bottom of her spine to the top of her half ripped shirt and the array of scars that covered almost every inch of skin in between. Some more faded than others, the freshest couldn't have been more than a year old. Each one thin and precise line, this had been no accident, she had either been forced to take a beating or let someone do this to her.
"Arms up." He instructs as she strains lift them with little protest but manages to keep them held in place long enough for him to loop the cloth around.
He begins to tie the fresh bandages around her, one hand laying flat across her ribs to keep them in place. The rough contrast of the tips his fingers brush against the exposed skin above her bandages. Once he's sure the bandages are tight enough he feels himself moving without thinking. Rook doesn't react as a finger traced the outline of a particularly deep bit of scar tissue that falls almost directly in the centre of her spine.
He had seen this kind of torture before, often inflicted on disobedient soldiers or deserters. It was possible to get rid of most scars and wounds with certain kinds of magic, for cosmic or personal reasons he had seen it done more than once. But some were not as easy to remove as others and perhaps she had chosen to keep them as a reminder for what had been done to her. He shouldn’t care, it was none of his business.
He could feel the demonic energy that ran in his veins drumming under his skin as he flexed his hand by his side. He was only human-ish after all.
Who did this to you? He wondered. I will make them beg for my blade. He should have no right to care. He had done that and worse to his own enemies, what made seeing it on her so different? Spite who had had been suspiciously dormant the entire time Rook had her wounds tended to was now flicking in and out of existence behind her. The demon Rook from its crouch by her side and for once the demon had nothing to say.
They were both thinking the same thing.
"These are not from battle." Lucanis states as he pulls the cut up edge of the shirt back down to cover what he can see of her side.
"No, they are not." Rook answers as she moves off the table to stand. Her cheeks have more colour to them now he notices as she refuses his help when she steadies herself. "Thank you, I think i've ruined your night enough. I should get going now."
Lucanis accepts her thanks with a nod not sure what to do now. He wants to ask her to stay. Only so he can keep an eye on her incase the wound gets worse of course. He couldn't exactly offer up his bed, a girl like her deserved to sleep on beds of silks and feathered mattresses.
In his first week at the Lighthouse he had been given a large room in the north wing with a plush four poster bed and a dozen pillows. It had felt like he was suffocating in the comfort of that bed, he had tried removing all the bedding on the second night. Placing the mattress on the floor on the third then welcoming the cool stone against his bare back on the fourth. None of it had worked. He felt like a dog without the comfort of its cage. It had been years since he'd slept on anything more comfortable than a couple of crates pushed together with a blanket over the top. Not that he slept much as it was.
As Lucanis begins to put away his things he can feel eyes on him as Rook stands as if she's waiting for him to say something. "Right, of course." Lucanis clears his throat then grabs something off his bed and passes it to her. "Get some rest if you can, i'm no healer so you should probably get somebody to look at that in the morning if you can."
Rook takes the shirt from him and begins to pull her old ruined one over her head with one hand as Lucanis turns to give her some privacy. He can feel his blood heating as the awareness that she’s half naked in his room sinks in. She places the discarded top on the pile of bloody cloth and bandages and cringes as she takes in the mess around the room. Dried blood on the floor, glass on the table, the door hanging on its hingers. After today she didn't think she would ever be able to face him again.
His cream collared shirt reaches her mid thigh, the size of it looking ridiculous on her. She was shorter than the average elf and even though Lucanis was tall for a human he only had a few inches on her but his build had made the shirt seem least thrice her normal size. When she finishes dressing Lucanis is still facing away from her - arms resting against the table as he tried not to think about what Rook might look like in his shirt. He can hear Spites perverted thoughts begin to pile up in his mind making him want to flip the table and its contents scores the room. Instead he re arranging his work and places the books back onto the table as he finishes cleaning off any trace of blood, any trace of her.
"Goodnight, Rook." Lucanis mumbles.
The way he says it sounds like goodbye. So this was it then.
"Goodnight."
Rook waits a few more seconds to see if he will turn back and then, she’s gone.

First Playthrough of AFoP: Secret of the Spires! - WARNING! Spoilers Ahead!
The Majority of my thoughts throughout playing the DLC.
Finally, I got the glitching drum quest and the Games Camp community basket done and over with! It was a good way to get back into practice with the controls.
Am I just dumb, or is the game glitching on me?! Why won't the plane blow up- OH COME ON! I'M THROWING EVERYTHING BY THE HOMETREE AT THIS MOFO!! - Really?! You wouldn't blow up because I wasn't shooting you in a very specific spot?! Bird you, dude!
Nor? Oh NOOOOOOR! Where are youuuuuuu? Oh, talk of a stranger Na'vi hanging around the area? About time- wait, Rasi who-? Oh, hello, fellow Sarentu character! Have you seen Nor? He's about this tall, clearly emo (and maybe gay) but we never had the talk.
Oooh, I have more skills for my Ikran and I can actually apply defensive armour and cook treats for her? WHERE WERE THESE OPTIONS IN THE CORE GAME!?
Getting mad at video game mechanics is automatically cured by sneaking around and killing video game fascist mercenaries.
... we don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no.
Oh, random Na'vi identified as a Sarentu saved So'lek from a sniper shot! Is it Rasi and Nor? Nope, just Rasi, that's cool! Love how protective Teylan already is of her once I said she was in the base.
Once I finished speaking to Anufi and Tsu'lo, I go up to find Teylan and Ri'nela and on my way I think, "Wait, what if Rasi is Nor's mum?" . I don't think that's the case, or she would have verbalize as such when we were talking about Nor, but how neat would that be. It'd be like we have a piece of Nor with us until we find him. Anyway, now that Rasi is here, I expect us to be re-educated on the way of the Sarentu. Maybe we'll finally get a Na'vi accent 😆
Cons:
This game needs some SERIOUS fine tuning, because I'm having bad guys be 'alerted' to my presence, when I'm literally half way across the map. One instance, where I'm trying to hunt for some Meer Dear, and this chopper just comes out of nowhere, attacks me, flies off to the horizon, but then summons two more choppers and a squad to my location, and they are already in the red despite being several yards away from me.
Maybe I'm just dumb, but I feel like it should not be so hard to find the objectives of certain quests.
Pros:
New Location!
And it looks gorgeous. The Spires are beautiful, there are new animals, and they freaked me out (the whole bit with the tunnels in the beginning, I thought I was being chased by something much bigger and completely ignored the first appearance of the Chiroptera XD)
2. The New Characters
The story kicks off when Anufi asks us to find another branch of the Kame'tire, who have still yet to return. While it is ultimately disappointing that we're not getting an entirely new clan, just a variation of a familiar clan, we are introduced to a new character: Rasi, a fellow Sarentu Survivor living in self-imposed exile.
Speaking of which, I like the one Na'vi that chided me for using a Sky Person name for a Pandoran creature, and my character correcting herself for it. Yes!
4. The Chrioptera
These guys were so cool, and so annoying at the same time. I thought they were gonna be so much bigger, but thanks Eywa, they were Ikran size!
4. Taylen is as cute as ever.
Just throwing that in there, I love my tall, strange son. I love when he starts geeking out, and we have to kindly reprimand him that we are in the middle of a hostile base and nows not the time!
My poor baby misses Nor so bad and just wants him to come back.
Overall View
While I am a little bit disappointed that we didn't get a brand new clan and that we didn't get Nor back, I do think this DLC was worth the wait.
While tiresome that there weren't that many fast travel points around the map, I actually like that, as it forces us to get to places via Ikran, something that the DLC advertised!
And while the new villain of the DLC was pretty boring compared to our literal kidnappers and abusers, he was a very challenging boss and it felt good to hit him with lightning and watch him crash and burn.
And we have a new veteran Sarentu to add to our family. I love that Ri'nela tries to comfort a homesick Teylan by humming the Sarentu song, only for Rasi to appear out of nowhere, singing the words and painting a Sarentu mural (seriously though, how did she get that done so quickly without anyone noticing? No wonder the RDA couldn't find her.)
And that voice cameo of freaking Quaritch basically putting his foot down on our resistance efforts and demanding we get squashed. Nice! And with how pissed he sounds, I'm guessing that this is right after ATWOW, where not only he lost his entire team of Recoms, but lost Spider too. Cuz yeah, he sounds angee.
Love how tight knit our little family has become and how steadfast they are in their bond (thought Ri'nela was running up to hug So'lek for a second, and my man looked so surprised when Teylan touched his shoulder XD) and now they all agree that it's time to find Nor and bring him back to the clan and prove that the Sarentu has a future.
So, overall, while I felt that this DLC was a bit short and the villain had little meat on his bones, this was a good DLC and with how they ended it with a possible sequel game with the mission to find Nor and the cameo of Quaritch so fingers crossed that AFOP comes back and that whatever sequels pops out pops with a BANG!
And hey! Since this game takes place during the one year absence of the Sullys, maybe if they do make a sequel, it'll take place during Ash and Fire! Maybe, Quaritch's cameo is a hint of him coming in, after aligning with Varang and the Mangkwan Clan! Can you imagine? A small clan that is rising to reclaim what is taken from them, vs a clan that has forsaken Eywa willingly and aligned with the RDA! With Quaritch leading them! That'd be bananas!!
Fingers crossed! C you guys around!!💙

Hii! I love your work and I'm a recent follower, so I wanted to request something a little selfish for me! If it's okay, and if you're willing, could I have some headcannons with Ramattra, Genji and Lifeweaver with a deaf!reader? I'd love to hear your thoughts about how quick they would pick up on sign language, and maybe reader giving them a cute allias in sign language? Per example, instead of signing Genji ’s name letter by letter, I would simply sign "My Dragon". Again, this is an extremely specific request so if you choose to pass it on, it's completely okay! Much love to you 🌺
This was such a cute thing to write, selfish or not. I don't really see many fics or hc's out there about this sorta thing, so I am glad to write this! Hope this is what you were looking for! ♥
Tumblr media
RAMATTRA
Ramattra never knew why you didn’t speak to him, only when someone mentioned that you couldn’t hear him did he realise the issue.
It also explained why you never answered him. You didn’t even know he was talking.
He researched how to apologise so he could have some peace of mind. He wasn’t mad, but he did wish someone would’ve told him sooner.
He searched for any module possible to instantly talk to you.
However, there was the issue of finding the right module.
With the many variations of sign language, he had to find the one that matched yours.
It took some time, but when he found the correct module, he was practically fluent in sign language, though he was still slow at talking.
It warms his circuits the moment he first signed to you and you smiled with a sparkle in your eyes.
His joints weren’t used to doing intricate hand signs, but over time, he got used to it.
Day after day he would sit with you to learn how to sign efficiently.
It was a learning curve to him, one he was grateful for as you were the one teaching him.
He was advancing in a way he had never imagined, especially with a human.
One day while signing with him, having what seemed like a normal conversation, you had signed something he hadn’t seen before.
It took his processors a moment to work it out and when he realised what you had signed, he chuckled, signing “thank you” towards you with a tilt of his head.
“My omnic”.
Tumblr media
GENJI
You had been responding to the ninja fairly well, but when you didn’t respond to his callout once, he wondered if you had ignored him.
He approached you, a little cautious in case you were annoyed at him, but when he realised you were constantly looking at his lips, it clicked for him.
Genji was close to you, figured you were just the quite kid, but being deaf was something he hadn’t thought about.
He spent that night researching and practising sign language.
It was a slow process for the ninja; he was always too distracted, but he picked up words and phrases to impress you.
Maybe a month went by before he finally managed to say a full sentence without any mistakes, but the fact that he was trying was enough for you.
After awhile, Genji would try to learn more.
He would take online classes to make sure he was doing the correct hand movements; that he was making sense.
Sometimes he would mess up, but that was okay.
The ninja spent his free time learning full sentences, eventually leading up to a full conversation with you.
It made you warm with happiness that he went through the effort to learn something new.
Sign language was hard, and with Genji being constantly distracted, it only made it slower to learn and he was several months in to learning.
Though, when you signed something to him that he had never learnt, he stumbled, thinking about it for the rest of the day before he researched what you had said.
A genuine smile appears on his face when he learns what you called him.
“My dragon.”
Tumblr media
LIFEWEAVER
Niran had some knowledge of sign language prior to meeting you.
When he heard you were deaf, he was excited to speak to you, though his speech was limited.
Seeing him interact with you was comforting, even if he did get embarrassed about his mistakes.
He would spend most of his nights practising, relearning what he already knew and focussing on his weaker points.
Niran would always go to you for help, wanting to know if he’s signing right and what he needs to work on.
It was like you were a tutor to him, one he felt comfortable around.
When he wasn’t working on his biology and science, he would study some more.
There was always room for improvement.
His mind was taken up by you, the want and need to impress you, no matter how many mistakes he made. It was all apart of the process.
Everything was going smoothly. His nightly studying was paying off and he was starting to fully understand conversation.
It only took a couple months for him to be fluent, the perks of being a fast learner but also sticking to a regime.
There was the odd occasion where he would mess up, but even you wouldn’t lie that you did it too.
He was fond of your presence, much like you were fond of his.
Niran was surprised when you signed a different name for him, one that made his cheeks flush the same pink colour.
“My lotus.”

Writing Tips: Autistic characters and their Safe Food
Disclaimer at the start: this here is mostly based on my own experiences and some stuff online written by other autistic people
So, first off, what is a Safe Food? A lot of autistic people struggle with food, especially due to sensory sensitivities. A Safe Food is a food that can be eaten at pretty much all times without distress. Depending on the person they might eat their Safe Food just like once a week or it might literally be all they can eat. A person might have multiple Safe Foods (I have three, one of has variations) or just one.
I often see the cliche that every autistic persons safe food is dino nuggets or plain pasta, which is just not true and it‘s kind of annoying me to see this reflected in stories, so here is some advice to avoid this a bit!
First off, decide wether the character in question is a sensory seeker or sensory avoidant in regards to food specifically. A sensory seeker well seeks out strong sensory input, like food that is very spicy, sweet or salty or food that‘s very crunchy or a lot of diffrent textures and tastes mixed in one dish (this is what I am). Someone who is sensory avoident on the contrary would prefer plain foods, without tastes and textures mixing.
This can be enough to know in a lot of cases, but if you would like to go into further detail, you can also think about things like the following: -Does your character prefer salty, sweet, spicy or bitter food? -Chewy vs soft vs chrunchy food? -Hot vs cold food? -Certain foods they absolutly won‘t eat? -Textures that just ick them out? -Do they have additional intolerances/allergies?
Something very importang with safe foods is that they are always the same. This is why many autistic people struggle with fruit, a apple tastes diffrent every time. Because of this a lot of peoples safe food is highly processed, like dino nuggets or pasta. The only reason why I can have a specific veggie dish as one of my safe foods is because I cook it myself, so I can always use the same ingredients in the same amount, and I use a ton of spices. (I should also note that I at the moment don‘t struggle as much with food as many other autistic people do)
It should also be noted that safe foods often change throughout a persons life time. This can be because a food becomes unsafe, for example due to trauma/bad experiences or a changed recipe, or just randomly. This can happen very quickly or over the course of multiple weeks.
Some other things to keep in mind/think about: -Safe Foods are often hyperspecific, like a certain brand of a food, and the cooking process usually needs to always be the same -Can the character in question cook for themself or do their caregivers cook for them? -Do they mealprep or not? (A reheated food might not be tolerated) -A lot of people stockpile their safe food -A safe food might need to be taken along while traveling -How many other foods can they eat? (At some point you enter ARFID-teretory, which is a whole other beast) -Do they have other issues that may make eating more complicated? (For example I have coordination and fine motor issues, that make eating with a fork or fork and knife more difficult) -Safe drinks also exist! -A Safe Food can be literally any food
There are definetly more things, these are just the ones that came to my mind! I hope this is helpfull!

Hello!!!
It's great that you're open to Jikook questions 😊
There's something that's been hunting me since I first saw it.
What's your interpretation of Jimin's reaction during the Vminkook live in Dec 2021- I'm referring specifically to Jimin's reaction after V said he was going to release a song with Jungkook? His reaction was super interesting, and so was Jungkook's.
We now know that V was playing around, and his statement wasn't true. Nevertheless, I think it caught Jimin by surprise, and my take is that he was a tiny bit jealous 😅 bless Jungkook, I think he was in a little bit of trouble there 🫣
Youtube link here:
https://youtu.be/5ufxVvjNbL4?si=UCbXNJxUfkz0c7i6
The moment I'm talking about starts around minute 45:00.
Thanks 💜
Hi Lovely!
This is a great ask, it’s something I’ve had convos with my friends about before! I’ve always found it highly entertaining when any variation of vminkook are together and get into skit mode or when Tae & Jungkook tease Jimin just to get him to go into super cute mode!
It’s what they do and have been doing for years.
This live was so chaotic VMinKook style from the jump. If anyone hasn’t watched it please do **everyone please watch original content**
It was chaotic because it was initially Tae’s solo live but he said how nervous he felt doing it alone and asked for staff to get Jungkook to join him.
NB: all image are gifs unless stated otherwise, please watch as they are there to support statements made. Original links to lives are at the end 💜
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jimin then came as he heard Tae needed company and Jimin had been with Jungkook. Jungkook eventually joined later.
Tumblr media
Due to nerves on Tae’s part and it being an unplanned live that Jimin & Jungkook didn’t intend to be having there were many times where they didn’t know what to do or the purpose of the live and would defer to Tae for direction. Tae had a running skit with Jimin about being the host of a show (the vlive) and Jimin and later Jungkook being his guests.
Tumblr media
Not a gif. Still picture
They also had funny moments where Tae would name drop different brands (this was funny as the group had contractual obligations with brands and they know in their profession they can’t name drop brands without consequence).
TMIs, games and more skits.
Tumblr media
credit: onlyluvkpop. Some of the fun and teasing they were having
As I said the live was fun, chaotic but also at times stilted due to its unplanned nature of it becoming a trio live and nerves.
Tumblr media
There was a point where Tae whilst trying to engage Jungkook tried (in my opinion) to run a joke with JK on army? I’m thinking he was hoping Jungkook and Jimin would catch onto it with him?
But cutie Minie Jagi was losssstttt 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jimin’s face in the live side by side with confused Jimin face from post Hobipalooza live
VMinkook love their role playing and teasing and even if Jimin hadn’t caught on, I do think nothing was done to intentionally exclude any of the three. All three tease each other in different combinations
So no, not jealousy in my opinion, Jimin has absolutely nothing to be jealous about. But confused and slightly lost, as to if it was another skit or really work related that he didn’t know about.
Maybe a tad annoyed with it being live and no hints that he was catching on to, to work with, giving a look to Jungkook like ‘are you guys serious? Why aren’t you giving me a hint on the joke’ or ‘why am I hearing about a song for the first time in a live? You guys aren’t making sense’ and Jungkook’s kinda like ‘I’m as lost as you are’ or ‘what did I do? I’m just going along too!’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe he was probably also thinking to himself when did Jungkook have a chance in between eating chicken together, working out together, Jungkook coming to his room all the time?? 😂
Tumblr media
Not a gif. Still picture
Also Tae literally talked about a Christmas song earlier on in the live when it was just Jimin and Tae
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Normally though, when V & JK are teasing Jimin, he knows it, and loves it 😂
Tumblr media
But Minie was lost that time and he told us so
Tumblr media
Tae & JK sometimes find a lost Jiminie, to be a cute Jiminie
Tumblr media
Original Source: Weverse
Tumblr media
Ultimately (in my opinion) Tae was mixing some facts together, which had JK quicker to the draw in playing along, but JK too was also confused at the beginning of their skit. When Jungkook caught on, he too teased Tae a bit and tried to get an expensive gift promise from Tae
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reached my media limit so ss the transcript instead, but like always, please watch the original lives for yourself
I’m assuming that the two had been vibing together and having fun making little play songs and singing, which is why JK said “what is it?” And “How can we release that?”
Tae did have a Christmas song in the works, just not with JK.
youtube
But for anyone that wanted a Christmas song from Jungkook, that’s ok, don't worry, him and Jimin have already done one together!
Tumblr media
Not a gif. Still picture from Dynamite Christmas remix MV

I really appreciate your ask @irmi3454, I had fun!

random question time! which wwx's relationship do you like the most and why? It could be platonic or romantic, all canons allowed
Thank you for the ask! Oh boy this question is hard, because I like I appreciate so many of his relationships for different reasons that picking just one feels kinda cruel
I think the biggest tie for me is between JC and LWJ for WWX.
Wangxian is the rare ship where I genuinely can only see them romantically with each other, like I’m multishipper, I’ll ship literally anything if you have an interesting concept, pretty words or beautiful art, like grab my attention I am yours, except these two, they live in my head rent free and they can only be together because like maybe you lost everything, maybe you can never go back to that blissful youth you once had, but that doesn’t mean you can’t build a new life for yourself and find happiness and all the grief and tragedy does not define you but you still want to help people and you will help people and maybe it isn’t the life you thought you wanted when you were fifteen but it is a wonderful one and you love and you are loved and you are happy and that is enough. Maybe you suffered, maybe you were cruel, maybe the world misread who you are and assigned you a role you did not ask for, but maybe that doesn’t matter because you know who you are, you are still kind, and you have someone who knows and understands you and trusts who you are. You are both also kind of insufferable in your love and get to be annoying too.
But JC & WWX are my ultimate tragic doomed platonic relationship, my neurotic little freaks who can’t be normal about each other and have zero boundaries, bickering idiots, wanting to go back to your youth except you’ll never be 15 again and you the person who knew the most intimate parts of yourself is now a stranger except you still see the glimmers of the person they used to be, the most brutal variation of you’ll never recover from that kind of devotion, the ultimate capturing  lost youth and having to go down different paths and really depicting what growing up is like sometimes, the viciousness where I am able to hurt you unlike anyone else (regardless if I want to or not), the abusive household codependency of survival, literally carrying a piece of your soul in my chest and making the ultimate sacrifice you never asked for because I couldn’t bare to risk losing you, the hollowness is a symbol of my devotion and the fullness is an omen of our splintering, there is one brain cell being shared like a game of tennis, my pathetic meow meow and beloved blorbo, I genuinely can’t be normal about them.
I think if I really have to pick between them though, I’ll have to say JC & WWX just by virtue of I don’t like Wangxian fics that mischaracterize or villainize JC, like if he’s featured and isn’t a well-written character (Shanastorytellers' and loosingletters’ fics my absolute beloveds), it really takes me out of the narrative. His depiction and relationship with WWX has a lot of impact on my Wangxian enjoyment, and even in canon my beloved Wangxian gets to develop because of all the Ls this poor guy takes, so congrats JC, you win here! It’s by a literal hair, but JC & WWX platonic relationship, get these boys a reconciliation so they can drink in Lotus Pier and gossip about their kids and people they think are stupid, WWX it will enrich your marriage so much I promise. It’s what *I* deserve.

I love the GoT series, especially for its historical accuracies (I could talk about them for daaaaaays), but I get really annoyed with the age gap debate with ships without taking into account the historical setting (especially Sansa Stark and Sandor Clegane). this has annoyed me to the point where I am writing a book to address the social construct just to tear it down.
In the past noble girls were married early. Not usually as soon as they had their first period (although legal), this was usually delayed until 16-18 years due to negotiations (it was a trade deal). However, most nobles would be married before they turned 20, unless they were undesirable for some reason (this could be appearance, family scandal, illness, physical health, disability, or personality), and they would quickly become known as spinsters - we think of spinsters being unmarried woman past middle age, but in the past, this could be used for an unmarried 25 y/o. Reminder that 'paedophile' refers to the attraction of prepubescent children (by UK law this is under 13).
Women married early for biological reasons; they have a short fertility period (while some men can keep fathering sons for decades; think Walder Frey). From first blood to menopause, a woman had to be married off as quickly as possible to ensure they had the best chance of providing as many children as possible. Menopause is currently between 45-50 yrs (with some biological variation), but in the past, this could be as early as 35 - unclear due to natural variation, but health and hygiene contribute to fertile health and the decline would be noted as the end for many noble women.
Men sometimes married later, usually for education, status, or military reasons. So one could expect a man not to marry until in their 20s (of higher social standing). Commoners skew the statistics, as they would marry at any age, and usually more love-matches (no need for social staus debates and political marriages), however, common men would be expected to have a job in order to provide for a wife and family, and so would sometimes be older, but the
If a man needed a wife, say windowed at 30. Guess what, they'd start at the beginning looking for a teenager. There was no point marrying an older woman (if there were any that were unmarried, that is). Widows were often off the cards if they had children as they would still belong to their dead spouse's family, and the social 'undesirables' would still be undesired by a man seeking their second or third wife. For example, Æthelred the Unready first married Ælfgifu - she was 4 years younger and perfectly normal. She died aged 32. His second wife Emma, was 18 years younger (aged 18 at the time) - a much larger age gap and unseemly by modern standards, but Æthelred would not have married a woman in her 30s whose fertility could decline shortly after marriage simply to marry someone closer to his own age.
Childhood and teenagers are relatively new terms. In the past, they were better defined as prepubescent and of marital age (postpubescent). Meaning you were considered almost adult once you could reproduce. To view historical fiction by modern standards, laws, and norms, is a mistake. One should understand the history to better understand the subject material and fictional writings it has inspired.
The best way to understand this is to understand why marriage was invented: to produce legitimate heirs. This is why infidelity was viewed differently for men and women - a man is unfaithful, it is a distraction and a sin, but bastards have no claim. A woman is unfaithful, this brings into question the legitimacy of her existing children, and she has wasted almost a year providing someone else a child. Not such a big deal now, but childbirth was also dangerous; they could literally die due to an affair... even before the husband found out about it. Therefore, ensuring the bride had enough time to produce children was essential. Bear in mind that during the Middle Ages, one could get an annulment for infertility in many countries (and still can) - as this is a breach of the marriage contract.
P.S. - This is historical thinking. I am pro same-sex marriage and believe this should have been legalised when marriage changed the definition to a declaration of love (circa 18th century)... but that's a religious debate for another time.
Back to the topic; Sansa Stark would not see age as an issue really. Although she hoped for a love match (and thus naturally inclined to someone near her own age), socially, she would see nothing wrong with Sandor Clegane based on age. Clegane would have had issues with any attraction until she reached 'adulthood' (before her first period) as this would have been considered immoral, however, once deemed an adult, this no longer poses an issue legally. Lysa was 21 years younger than Jon when they married - she protested this based on age, but realistically she only protested as she had hoped to marry Petyr.

People twisting themselves into pretzels to cement that Gale sacrificing himself is 'right' 🙃
It's a lot of things but it's not right. DEPENDING on how you play it may be right for your character but it isn't right for Gale.
Idk why we should consider what Gale would be without a Tav or even an origin pc character when it's impossible to engage with the videogame's story without one. It's a videogame! It's meant to be played.
I totally understand if you ignore this ask btw and are done with the discussion of this.
as i said before: feel free to vent in my inbox any time about this tbh. i still have a few messages to answer. it's an atrocious interview and it remains absolutely atrocious still.
i am honestly not sure what any of these points even have to do with the main criticism that a lot of people have voiced other than obfuscating the heart of the matter:
this part of the interview sends a negative message to those who identify with the struggles gale faces, which two lead writers and the founder of the companiony reinforced, whether that is intentionally or unintentionally
saying that your rpg with so many permutations - that they very much pride themselves with too in the very same interview - has a "right" ending is a choice
they should be aware of the underlying themes of their own creations - and they have shown they largely are when speaking about the other characters in the same interview - and that very real people do identify with all of this, which their writing is crafted to do, instead of parroting meme speak on reddit, twitter & co. for whatever reason
the devs agreeing and saying that there is a "right" ending "in many ways" for one of your main companions, and framing that same companion, who struggles after isolating himself, struggling with depression, suicidal ideation, a chronic impairment and a number of other things that people do relate to, as "the guy who starts off annoying everyone", "eating your most priced possessions" or "he's in trouble", and "at the end, he gives himself for the world", that "he had the choice already once before where he wasn’t ready for it" is a valid criticism for people to have, whether or not some wish to accept that or not.
i have said it before and i'll say it again, but it would have cost them zero ( 0 ) cents to say something along the lines of "we dont really consider our game to have right endings because we have so many variations depending on what you play." and leave that line of conversation there.

do you guys need to shave? Like do you guys get body hair? I’m curious because I never knew you guys could grow beards but what about body hair?
Tumblr media
The Coordinator: Not as far as I am aware.
Tumblr media
The Conservator: Actually, some of us do grow beards and have body hair. It is generally considered rude to obscure your phase, so many who can grow one choose to shave, though it is seen as unnecessary to shave all of it. Father shaves his face, and I do not enjoy the feeling of any of it so I shave it all. Since father has that trait, most of us do as well. It is extremely annoying.
Tumblr media
The Conservator: The reason for why we have any at all is not known, though it is probably just a factor of our broad, natural variation in presentation of our so-called genetics. There are many obscure genetic variations for us that serve no purpose, like how we all have teeth despite not needing them to eat, or why we look the way we do at all. This is just how it is, so having a large pool of uncommon traits feels completely normal, especially when comparing genetic variation across most species. A similar depth of variation is more likely to be present in dominant species, or domesticated ones, as they can protect each other, and allow viability unfavorable traits to persist in ways wild prey creatures have no luxury to.
Tumblr media
The Conservator: Ah, I have done it again.

The DCLA names and how likely I would be to name my kid that
Keep in mind that I do not live in a latin american country, which means some of my choices would be based on the types of names common or uncommon where I live. Some names I think are nice but would stick out a lot more over here.
Violetta: The thing is, I love this name, but if I name my child this I will just think about Violetta the character every time I say their name.
Francesca: Yeah!
Camila: If, and only if, my child is red haired. Source: Every Camila I've met irl has been red haired, and Camila in the show is... well not naturally red haired but it's hard to not to picture her with red hair. (Side note, every Camila I've met have also worked as a teacher or in childcare?????)
Ludmila: I think so?
Natalia: Maybe... although, where I live, it's more common to have a variation of the name, Natalie.
Maxi: It's too common! I've met a lot of Maxi's in my life, although it's short of Maximilian rather than MAXIMILIANO.
Leon: Yeah!
Andres: Not really. Maybe the variation, Anders. But Anders is a "only men over 40 are named this" type of name so... probably not.
Diego: I could consider it, but idk if I'd pick it as a final name
Tomas: no.
Broduey: Everyone will misspell it as Broadway and I just don't want to give my child unnecessary hardships
Federico: I'm very unsure about that tbh
Angie: Yes <33 I'd have Angie as a full name instead of just a nickname too.
Jade: I'd consider it!
Matias: Never in a million years
Germán: Naaaah...
Olga: I don't really think so...
Lisandro (Ramallo): No, not really.
Luca: Yes, I like that name!
Pablo: It's a fine name, but it also feels like a name that only works in certain age groups. Like a teenage boy or a middle aged man named Pablo is fine, but I have a harder time picturing a newborn baby named Pablo.
Roberto (Beto): The name Robert is more common here than Roberto, and I have a relative named Robert already lol
Jackie: Maybe? It would be pretty gender neutral too.
Emma: NEVER. I associate that name with a childhood bully of mine.
Lara: Yeah, I'd think about it
Helena/Lena: Well, I associate this name with middle aged teachers lol. But I wouldn't be opposed to it.
Mara: "Mara" is a slang for a witch in swedish. Also my name is Sara and it feels so cliché to have a name that rhymes with yours.
Ana: Ana, or Anna is so common that I really want to pick something else.
Maria: Maybe?
Antonio: Yeah, maybe...
Gregorio: I don't think so
Esmeralda: In my judgement, people named Esmeralda are either the sweetest humans alive or the meanest and brattiest people you'll meet. And I am not sure if I wanna risk it.
Clement: No.
Marco: I could picture naming my child Marco tbh.
Gery: No???? I'd just associate it with HER.
Nicolas: I could. Potentially.
Napoleon: Maybe...
Braco: I could think about it at least.
Luna: I could.
Ámbar: Honestly, yeah. Maybe without the accent so it's easier for people to spell lol. But yeah.
Simón: Absolutely! Although without the accent as it'll work better here without it.
Matteo: No.
Nina: I know so many Nina's in my life - some of them are really kind, and others I wrote in my diary in fourth grade that I wanted to murder. All in all, it's just a too common name.
Gastón: I could, because it just has this... "memorable" vibe over it, like you're definitely gonna remember someone named Gastón. However, it's a high chance people associate it with Gastón from Beauty and the Beast and make jokes like that all their upbringing.
Monica: Every single Monica I've met has been a teacher or a lunchlady. Also they'd be tormented with the swedish hit single "Hej Monica" which is one of the most annoying songs ever produced from Sweden. Listen to it and you'll see why. Especially in the end of the song where the singer just straight up SCREAMS. So maybe I'll spare them of that.
Miguel: Hmm... idk
Rey: I think the name Rey is pretty cool. So I'd consider it.
Jimena: Ok, when I first heard her full name, my immediate reaction was "That's a strange name?" - because for me living here, it was never a name I heard about before. But then I thought about how many names there are from my country that would sound pretty strange to other cultures, so I tbh should be quiet. All in all, I think Jimena is a pretty nice name, but I also know that over here where I live, people would have a bit of a "can you repeat that?" when someone says it.
Yamila: I think this name could work more... although I feel like some people would be like "Haha you wanted to name them Camila but be different so you changed it to a Y didn't you" (you know, as I'm writing this, I realize just how much swedes are judgemental of names jfc)
Ramiro: I could think about it... not sure if I'd pick it as a final name though.
Pedro: Hmmmmmmm I'm hesitant
Jazmin: Yeah, I think so.
Delfina: If I name my child Delfina I will expose them to so many dolphin jokes for their entire life, so I think I wanna spare them of that
Mora: There's a town in Sweden called Mora so I think if I tried to submit the name it would get disapproved because no child should be named after a town. And yes, we have to get our names approved... which tbh most countries do, it's just that specific one country that doesn't so they think everyone else in the world are "super strict" about it.
Gary: No.
Tamara: I could think about it, but not sure I'd choose it as a final option.
Juliana: Maybe.
Sharon: I think I'd just picture a british old lady, and so it can be hard seeing my little newborn child be named that. The name wouldn't fit them until they're adults.
Amanda: Yeah, it's a name I've actually thought about before that I could picture my child be named.
Ricardo: Not Ricardo, but possibly the variation, Rickard.
Lili: Yeah, it's a cute name!
Bernie: Possibly?
Maggie: I could.
Alfredo: I think I'd shorten it to Alfred if I named my kid this.
Bia: Yeah! And I know her name is short for Beatriz, but I think Bia as the full name is really cute.
Chiara: Yeah, possibly!
Celeste: Sure!
Daisy: I'd definitely think about it, but I also knew a Daisy irl that was really annoying and has definitely ruined the name a bit for me.
Pietro: It's a cool name, but I think everyone would mishear it as Pedro when I say it.
Alex: Naaaah... it's too common
Manuel: Yeah! It's a nice name!
Pixie: It's a very sweet name, so I'd think about it
Victor: I think so!
Lucas: I really wanted my little brother to be named Lucas before he was born, so it's always been a name I liked.
Thiago: I'm... unsure
Carmín: It's a pretty cool name, so maybe!
Alice: I've always liked the name Alice, ever since I was a kid. So yes.
Jhon: Not spelled like that, I'd spell it like John. Although, still not a name I'm super into.
Marcos: No, I'd rather name the kid Marco.
Guillermo: No...
Aíllen: I don't think so.
Mariano: I don't really think so.
Paula: I do like the name Paula! Even though I'm not a big fan of the Bia character Paula lol
Luan: Maybe! And Luan is a pretty gender neutral name too.

🍗 BG3 Modern AU: Harvest Feast [Thanksgiving] Dinner Edition 🥔
A/N: Obviously, Thanksgiving doesn't exist in this universe. I mean a version could exist. There have been so many wars and fights within realms, a big ironic, disarming feast technically could have happened before some bloodshed and genocide. I’m not a DND expert. But I think with a little creative licensing, you could twist this concept more into a Harvest Festival feast sort of thing. Just go with it, I wrote it on my phone while hiding from my family members.
Astarion:
You remember that one vine that’s like, “Everyone has a gay cousin. Bitch, I don’t have a gay cousin… Oh, oh I am the gay cousin.” That’s him- he's the gay cousin. Always crushes it at charades. Like, he’s the unbeaten champion, for four years running.
Gale:
The host with the most. Always cooking new variations of the same meals. Some are good. Others, like his minimalist, organic tofu vegan recipe for turkey, are better left off as concepts, not executions.
Wyll:
Always brings the best dessert. And is the one to kick off the conversation at dinnertime. Either about his time as the Blade of Frontiers or about what’s currently happening in the capitol. The one cousin you’re most likely to learn is actually a secret gossip.
Karlach:
That one grown-up who prefers the kids to table to the grown-ups' tables. Always down to start a game outside before dinner is ready. Gets teasingly scolded by Astarion for making a bigger mess rolling around outside in the dirt than the actual children.
La’zel:
Looks super badass when she arrives on her motorcycle. Shows up, eats, and then dips out back to hang out with Minthara for a smoke. That one intimidating, quiet cousin who everybody lowkey fears, and tries really hard not to provoke.
Shadowheart:
Did someone say WINE AUNT? No, seriously, she always brings the booze for the grown-ups. (Also in charge of bringing the pot, which is why La’zel and Minthara let her join them behind the garage.) She also always manages to look so put together. Not having children looks really good on her lol.
Halsin:
The kind of guy who goes out and hunts his own damn turkey, plucks in, and cooks it- all outdoors, without any sort of fancy oven or cookware technology. He’s got like a dirt hole firepit and a cover but always ends up making the most delicious turkey you’ve ever had in your life?? Says all he uses is salt and pepper but you know damn well, he’s lying.
Minthara:
The cool goth cousin you were always too intimidated to talk to as a child but who you grew up to really admire as an adult. She only comes to avoid the annoying guilt-tripping she’d have to endure should she skip. Is surprisingly personable once you get her high- almost like a Jekyll and Hyde thing going on.
Bonus! Jaheira:
Your one Aunt who’s always exhausted, probably from having to rope her grown-ass children into doing normal things together as a family. Constantly can be heard whispering threats under her breath to them at the dinner table. Is always super nice and supportive to you though.
Bonus! Minsc:
Your outlier, kind of nuts Uncle who occasionally talks in the third person. Possibly from a head injury or maybe he was born like this. You can never get a straight answer. But he’s abstractly wise once you stop judging him by his initial appearance, and listen to what he has to say. Just don’t ask him about anything tangible like the moon landing, or if birds are real. Otherwise, you’re in for a long night.

nobody asked, but here's my opinion on every Rain World region because I am pretty bored. A note that a lot of my experiences/opinions on Downpour regions come from release, so there were no maps, no nothing.
Outskirts: a good basic region, nothing spectacular, but a good introduction into the world, has few threats, the platforming is not challenging and the punishment for failing is mild, but it gets you accustomed with the controls and mechanics. Hell on earth with Hunter/Downpour spawns tho, still a solid region.
Industrial Complex: love it a lot, I don't even remember why at this point. Used to say it's my favourite region, wouldn't call it that anymore, but nonetheless I think it's great. A bit more of a challenge than Outskirts, while still being pretty chill, probably the player'e first encounter with vultures, which scared the shit out of me, but also my first vulture kill happened there (on the bridge to Shaded, flat ground my beloved). Has a lot of good places to learn advanced movement tech too. Aesthetics wise it's not too remarkable and pretty similar to Outskirts, but it works, also bio-engineering is one of the best tracks.
Drainage System: I'm #1 Drainage defender. It doesn't deserve nearly all the hate it gets. Yeah, it's prettt much a trap and a death sentance if you go there immediately after Outskirts, but that doesn't make it a bad region. It has great aesthetics, great ost, great layout. Ideally you have to have a bit of experience with water physics in Rain World before entering, otherwise it gets problematic, but really it's not THAT necessery if you're willing to experience some trial and error. Yeah, there's The Tunnel, but really, not that bad, you either have to be good at controls in water or get a little creative and that's always fun to find workarounds. I got stuck there the first time like many others, but after some time I realized that I have a spear that can help me jump back over the hole, and it worked, after that when I got there I first went to the left, since the water falling pushes the leeches down and they don't follow you, there you can grab a bubbleweed and proceed back to the right, since it repels the leeches. Then, you know, I got good at the game and there's no reason to do that anymore. Also with Downpour it's no longer a "jump in The Tunnel or it's a dead end". Also extremely fun to run and jump around there as Rivulet, they wall jump so fast.
Garbage Wastes: pretty mid imo. It's not BAD, but it's not great either, just kinda there, part of the reason I grew to dislike it is the fact that back in vanilla I took Garbage Wastes route to Shoreline while I was on the quest to bring Moon every single pearl. The aesthetivs are solid, I can see the appeal, but for me it just doesn't do it, not a fan. Also it's full of scavs and I'm a scav hater 👎 (has nothing to do with Artificer, I was a hater way before Downpour)
Shoreline: it's meh, it's most notable for being a "walking right simulator", too flat and long for me, not enough interconnecting parts with interesting terrain. It's water, like Drainage, but done boring. I remember platforming in Moon was sooo difficult the first time, now it's mildly annoying.
Shaded Citadel: scary as shit and I love it. so much. First time was the worst, didn't know about lanters, had scary sounds, thought only source was light was throwing flashbangs. I entered from Idustrial, got scared, quickly died, and turn around never to return for the next ... many hours. Now it's the only route to and from Shoreline I take, love the feel and aesthetics dearly, I learned how to deal with coalescipedes and I feel powerful. Usually go there after I have neuron glow because I can't be bothered to carry a lantern, but it's not required, realistically I can navigate there without a light source. Industrial to Shoreline is "going right simulator", sure, but unlike Shoreline itself it has terrain variation, it has interconnecting paths, but it's also not a complete maze, it's clearly devided into upper, middle, and lower parts. Also Memory Crypts is cool, even tho I don't go there because. well, because next point ↓
The Exterior: to me it's very clearly devided into The Wall and The Underhang/Leg, about which I have very differing opinions. The Wall is awesome, great, fun, I love going Up Up Up, and also being above clouds when rain starts ... wow so cool. And now that Downpour added day/night cycle it's even prettier. The Underhamg on the other hand... yeah, I don't like it, it requires a grappleworm to pass and I don't like them, it's no fun, got softlocked there the first time I've been there, but like for real, not like in Drainage. DLLs can be annoying to deal with when they're blocking your way, you can waste an entire cycle waiting for the path to be clear. And also the karma gate to Five Pebbles in TheUnderhang is in every way inferior to the one above The Wall.
Five Pebbles: immaculate aesthetics, but going through the region ... no thank you. I only found it fun as Artificer, since it has a lot more movement control in zero-g. As any other slugcat, it's very frustrating waiting to hit a wall to jump off it, or trying to grab something to throw to boost yourself in a direction. The region looks really cool, Memory Conflux is my favourite part, but I simply can't enjoy it because of zero-g. And on the first playthrough I HAD to go there because I've been to Pebbles' chamber one too many times and he kept killing me, and as a consequence I HAD to go through The Underhang, overall a very unpleasant experience that largely shaped my attitude towards the two regions.
Chimney Canopy: a lot of hostile creatures, but in a fun way, once again I like going Up Up Up, and there's also the bridge to Sky Island/The Wall which is nice flat terrain to fight vultures, very cool. The Gutter is like. It's fine, I don't hate it, I enjoy the aesthetics, but the thich water you swim through very slowly is frustrating. Also I want the dropwig in that one room back :'[ thank you modders for saving me. My path of choice to Five Pebbles/Sky Islands, but overall unremarkable, not bad however.
Farm Arrays: I don't like this region. at all. it sucks. It's annoying, it's frustrating, unrewarding, when I get somewhere I don't think "I finally did it!!" I think "it's finally over", and the aesthetics aren't good enough to make up for it. I like raindeer, but dealing with them is awful.
Subterranean: it's meh, it's fine, it's okay. Not a hater, not a fan, don't really go there ever because. it's not interesting to me in any way. My favourite room is the one random pool looking room I want to see something that expands upon that idea and aesthetic. Filtration is annoying, but at this point I can navigate it blindfolded, Depths are just time consuming after the fiest couple of times, not ineteresting at all.
Pipeyard: I'm an avid hater, it's boring, it's frustrating to navigate, the color palette makes me wanna throw up, it offers NOTHING, you can beat the game a billion times and never step a foot in there, it serves no function, other than being a shortcut for Hunter, but it's not even needded really. The only serviceable part is Sump Tunnel, it's kinda like Drainage but lamer. Also Pipeyard is a maze, and not even the fun kind.
Submerged Superstructure: very cool to explore, it is a maze, still not the fun kind, but the aesthetics and how it's interconnected does make up for that, so it's not a big complaint, esp since you primarily explore it as the speedy fast rodent. It's exploring an iterator, but without the zero-g, that's cool. And also Bitter Aerie is sooo awesome, I love the snow, the way it just spits you out there once you place the rarefuction cell, fun. Was kinda frustrating on release, for some reason a lot of downpour regions lagged really badly on my computers back then, after a while it just. was fine again, literally nothing changed in my hardware, idk what was the issue. I figured out giant jellyfish caused lag, got rid of them, but it still occasionally lagged so bad I had to quit. Now it's all good and I can enjoy the region in its full glory.
Outer Expanse: unpopular opinion, Sunken Pier > the rest of it. Idk, I just don't like it, it's very much not doing it for me. The rooms are boring even tho objectively I can say they are fine, the look and aesthetic of the region it's just. Objectively it's fine, there's nothing wrong with it, but I don't like it to an absurd degree. Also probably part of the reason is that I did not enjoy playing Gourmand.
Waterfront Facility: I still don't like it, it's not bad, I don't hate it, but it's once again not good either. The Precipice can go fuck itself tho. It's long, frustrating jumps, no shelters, so you have to backtrack a lot, and you WILL die with how tight the jumps are, and with all that it's still infested with hostile creatures.
Metropolis: one of my favourites, very fun, very cool, tailor made for Artificer's explosive jump, which is a great design choice imo, adds some platforming challenges that are fun and rewarding to overcome. Those platforming challenges also serve for a good (better) terrain to fight scavangers, since they can't reach as far as you can (there are srill piper they can access to get to you, but it buys you time). The aesthetics are great, it' clearly divided into sectors, it's interconnected but still makes sense, the fun kind of maze. I love going Up Up Up and it has The Tallest Tower, exactly what I need. I wanted to see Pebbles' city ever since vanilla and they gave it to me. This is a region made for me specifically. Also the region art is a banger.
The Rot: very big, confusing to navigate and the overseers don't really help. The rarefaction cell is so close to Five Pebbles, but on my first try I went pretty much everywhere except the right direction, went from all the way from The Wall gaye all the way down to The Underhang gate. But I'd still say I like it, the aesthetics save it, once again, iterator insides, but no zero-g. A lot of fun platforming challenges, but also a lot of bullshit with DLLs.
Looks To The Moon: same as Five Pebbles in vanilla honestly. Zero-g is extremely unfun for me. It was cool to see familiar rooms, but working, but was does it save it? no. Also the neuron flies are not enough to sustain Spearmaster, and Moon's Underhang ... oh god it's awful why is there so much shit there, especially spiders.
Undergrowth: Drainage, but green, nice.
Silent Contruct: good, but too big for it's own good, I was barely able to find Five Pebbles. Once again it's neat to see familiar rooms in a new way, being destoyed that is. I like it, but not a huuuge fan, don't think I'll ever revisit it much. Especially since I spent A LOT of time there the first time, I think I've been everywhere on the map before finding Five Pebbles.
Rubicon: once again it's too fucking big. And once again it was laggy as hell on release. I got lost, backtracked, got lost again, went back in the directing I've been to originally, rinse and repeat over and over and over. Aesthetics are cool, but wear off quickly. I don't like yellow and it's pretty clear throught this whole post I think. Seeing old rooms in a new way, again, cool, neat. But it still doesn't make up for all of its bullshit. I just wish it wasn't as big as it is, because thematically I like it a got. But gameplay wise, I don't wanna go there ever again.

Tips and Tricks to Smooth Your French Translations (When You Don’t Speak French) - a Focus on French-ifying Your Characters
"Oui/Non", "ouais/nan" and variations
Today’s section will broach adverbs of affirmation and negation, as well as their variants, and what their subtext is.
"Oui" and "non" mean, as you probably already know "yes" and "no". So why am I dedicating an entire section to them?
These two words are often used in English dialogues as an easy reminder that one of the characters is French and perhaps does not have a good grip on the language.
Let me tell you, I have never heard in my life someone forgetting the words "yes" and "no". Even people who can’t string a sentence together know what they mean and can use them.
What we can do instead is framing it as a slip. My fellow friends who speak two languages or more know what I’m talking about. When you’re speaking another language, especially when you know enough to understand and speak basic sentences but are not all the way to bilingual, your brain shifts a bit (I don’t have a good way to say it, sorry) so, when you shift back, the words that will come out of your mouth are the first one that comes in mind, and it’s not necessarily in the right language.
Having said all that, why do I get so annoyed at "oui" and "non"? It’s because, to qualify as a slip, it has to feel natural, the first thing that would be said in an informal setting. It is most often not. Allow me to explain:
"Oui" and "non", like "yes" and "no", are formal. These are the words you would hear in a presidential debate, for example. In more casual settings, prononciations tend to diverge.
Which gives us things like "ouais", "moui", "mouais", "nan", "na" (so basically "yeah" and "nah" with varying degrees of pronunciation accuracy), that cover a large array of nuances.
"Ouais" and "nan" have no real nuance behind the tone it is said with but, again, they denote casualness. They can be used to show that you’re character is Chill™, or that they feel at ease in the situation or with their interlocutor(s).
"Moui" and "mouais" (for "yes") are not exclusively positive. Think "mh yes" and "mh yeah" condensed into one word. Needless to say, they are not in the dictionary.
"Mouais" is generally used to agree with something you’re not particularly happy about, or to agree while still having a reserve. You will often hear "mouais" said with a commiserating, a resigned (in a "well, we have to do this, we’re all in it together" kind of way) or a baffled tone.
"Moui," on the other hand, indicates all sorts of shyness, ranging from fake modesty to getting caught red-handed and being ashamed of themself. It can also be in a resigned tone, but this time in a "a child has to do something because their parents told them to, and worst of all they’re right" kind of way.
Examples:
A: "I really don’t like this girl, but you have to admit that she does excellent work."
B: "Mouais…"
B has to agree. She really does a good work. B is annoyed that someone they don’t like is able to do well. Alternatively, B is commiserating with A.
A: "B! You left the cupboard open again! I told you a thousand times, stop doing that!"
B: "Moui…"
B feels guilty because they did forget to close the cupboard. Since it’s just above A’s field of vision, A took the corner of the door at full (walking) speed, right in the forehead. Again.
"Na" is different from "nah". It’s a bit childish, you don’t hear many grown adults say that, even jokingly. It’s a full shut down, and leaves no place for discussion. It is generally followed by an exclamation mark.
Example:
A: "B, it’s time to do your homework."
B: "Na!"
This one is self-explanatory. B is a child that doesn’t want to do their homework. The following discussion will not be a reasonable one.
To wrap this up before we leave the "vibe zone" and enter the academically correct French territory, let’s try all of our options with one sentence:
A: "Hang in there, the holidays are almost there!"
B: "Oui/Ouais."
That is a fact. B feels rather neutral about this. We could extrapolate and say that there is still a week of work left, but there is also only a week of work left. B uses "ouais" with a colleague he gets along with, and "oui" with a boss or a colleague he doesn’t see that much. Choosing the right word is a matter of respect, ease/proximity, and expectations.
"Non" and "nan" work the same as "oui" and "ouais".
B: "Oui/Ouais !"
B is living for their holidays. They can’t clock out soon enough. Choice of word is the same as above.
B: "Mouais."
B is unconvinced. B has a lot of work to do before leaving. B might just be in a little bit of a bad mood. Or A leaves the same day as B and they both know it’s not that fast-approaching.
B: "Moui."
Same as above. B is a slightly more disgruntled.
B: "Mouais !"
B is a little more convinced, but not fully on board. It’s a nice thought to have from time to time, but it gets easily forgotten. It’s definitely not what pushes B through the day. Could also be full-on sarcasm.
B: "Moui !"
That’s right! B hadn’t thought about it. B is probably going to forget about it in half a minute.
B: "Na."
B’s holidays are far from happening. How dare A shove their paid leave in B’s throat? B has one wish, and it’s to go home and sleep for 24 hours straight. People have no respect, these days. B’s last holidays were 6 months ago, and the next one are probably next year.
Academically correct French territory:
I still need to introduce one little word that is extremely important: "si".
"Si" has multiple meanings but, you guessed it, we’ll focus on the "yes" one.
There is one major difference between "oui" and "si", and it’s when to use them.
In French, these are the words used depending on the previous statement:
To confirm a postive statement: "oui" ("yes")
To infirm a positive statement: "non" ("no")
To confirm a negative statement: "non" ("no")
Looks like a pattern, right?
To infirm a negative statement: "si" ("yes")
Well that’s French, for you, can’t trust it.
The thing "si" does is emphasize that we are negating the negative statement in order to make it positive. We’re highlighting the fact that "nope, you’re wrong, have no doubt about it". "Si" makes it extremely clear, there are no hesitation in the interpretation of the answer. I love this word.
Example:
A: "You didn’t eat/Didn’t you eat?"
B: "Si, why do you ask?"
French also often repeat the "si", as in "si, si !"
It’s clear as day, it’s beautiful.
