I must admit I have a lot of respect for Madam Yu (Yanran’s stepmom and Yanhong’s mother) for refusing to marry Yanhong to Gu Tingye after he tells her about the salt farms worth 27000 liang per annum to convince her about the marriage. I don’t think it was reasonable to expect Tingye to throw his children on the streets, but Madam Yu not wanting her only daughter to marry a man who clearly prioritizes another woman and basically only wants to marry to provide his mistress and kids with a stable situation is understandable as well. And she impressed me by the fact she wasn’t even the slightest tempted by the money. I was reminded of Minglan backing off the marriage to the He Family later on, which was not an entirely dissimilar situation when you think about it. Of course, Tingye is not entirely unsympathetic and would probably be decent enough to Yanhong, but I think in the end Madam Yu made the right call to cancel the wedding.

I really like how the drama compares the kinda flippant attitude dads have in this drama versus the more protective and uncompromising manner of the mothers (and grandmoms!). Mr Yu wanted Yanhong (and Yanran previously) to marry Tingye because of how rich he is due to the Bai’s family’s assets and we also saw how Sheng Hong settling for the Yuan Family for Hualan - against Ruofu’s protests, if I might add - brought her more harm than good eventually. I think the series is trying to make a point of how Mr Yu, and Sheng Hong and many other men are oblivious to the struggles of women due to their own male privilege, whereas women like Wang Ruofu, Madam Yu, Grandma Sheng, Youyang Grandma Sheng etc. are less likely to push their daughters or granddaughters in an imperfect marital situation because their own experiences as women inform them on how likely they are to suffer because of it.

there are a lot of evil people in the world and a lot of darkness in the world and so it’s very important for me to stress that now more than ever is the time to spread kindness and compassion. combat the evil by not only not partaking in it, but actively refuting it. destroy the notion that being compassionate or generous or kind to someone is uncool or embarrassing or even scary. be the change you want to see. start a chain reaction. positivity only breeds more positivity. do an act of kindness for someone so that that person who is too afraid to do it themselves can see you, realize that they’re not alone, and perhaps sheepishly follow your example. and then the next person who is too afraid but sees that person can do the same. when bad news comes out about bad people or horrible atrocities in the world it’s such an easy impulse to despair, and obviously it’s important to feel what you need to feel. grieve. be angry. be sorrowful. be empathetic. but dust off your pants and get up and be a part of a chain reaction that, no matter how small the scale, and spread compassion and love and care. all the reasons why you might not—“it’s hard! it’s scary! people will make fun of me! it’s useless because there’s too much evil!” are all grade A arguments as to why you should. you have no idea how many people you could inspire to do the same. even if it doesn’t get you anyway far, you can at least say you have the nobility of trying. please choose love and please choose life. you are worth loving and you are worth inspiring others to love

Don't worry, it'll spread very quickly, but if you're in a hurry you can find his commemorative statue and leave an offering. No one knows if it really works, but it's a good way to pass the time and feel productive.

watching the valeria interrogation again and when alejandro says, “you disgrace the army”, rudy steps forward but when alejandro looks over his shoulder at him and says, “and your brothers, no?” he steps back again, almost like he’s trying to pull himself out of the conversation

alejandro leans in close to her and rudy reacts like he wants to pull him away, to protect him from her and from her words, but when he brings up that valeria hurt him too, betrayed him too, rudy retreats like he doesn't want to be reminded of it

it's alejandro who keeps valeria talking about the past, who prompts her to say more when simply saying she's ex-military would've been enough. they bait each other, valeria far more successfully than alejandro; she’s essentially running the interrogation

this speaks volumes of rudy’s interjection of, “he (the son of la areña) was supposed to go to prison”. he’s getting short; cutting off valeria and her excuses, not to redirect them back to the point of the interrogation but bc he’s done with her. rudy’s terser with her, more obviously angry, than he is with an actual terrorist

alejandro can't get past their history; let's himself get pulled off track and compromised but not be he's more upset than rudy. rudy has just repressed the hell out of it; if he doesn't think about it then it didn't happen

but now, he's suddenly being confronted with it head on

"you disgrace the army," is generalised; valeria didn't just hurt rudy, she hurt all of them. it's easier to take

"and your brothers," calls rudy out directly for his pain; pain alejandro wants retribution for and he doesn't want to face it, doesn't want to admit to it bc he doesn’t want to have to feel it

with my phantom hourglass replay, there are two things i noticed;

a possible theme you could glean from the game is action vs inaction, and i think it's especially prevalent before you even leave mercay the first time, with oshus frequently urging link to not go after the ghost ship, then to just wait until the broken bridge is fixed, and seems reluctant at every turn while link and ciela are more than eager to go and do something about this problem, and the people of mercay in general talking about things and their problems but never seeming to act on their fears or desires, as well as the mention that due to the ghost ship, very very few people are still sailing around, while linebeck is one of the only people we see in the game actively going after the ghost ship and still sailing around. i might make a longer post just talking more about the action vs inaction in phantom hourglass but i just noticed it a bit and thought it was a bit of an interesting sort of theme you could find in the game.

linebeck moves so fucking much. i think he moves more than any npc in the rest of the game. not just in his intro cutscene where he is very animated, just in how much he moves when just standing in his little idle post, it's damn near distracting when the camera is focused on him, he moves a lot. i don't think i've really acknowledged how much he moves, and it really gives the impression that he's antsy or eager to get going, both of which fit him pretty well with how he acts.

Käärijä is ready to let cha cha cha go, I hope he can soon. Let Häärijä wear the yellow or green bolero, so that Käärijä can put more focus on his usual music, while also having the opportunity, time, and creative freedom to experiment to his heart's content. That way he can compartmentalize cha away into its folder, still perform it because it is the song that rocketed him into fame, and not grow to hate it.
