Frederick is not what you think

I saw a lot of people take umbrage with Frederick's new characterization in the train cart scene, but this is setting us up for either misdirect or a deeper nuanced take on Frederick's character.

Remember, they're setting up a parallel between the love Percy knows and understands and the love Annabeth has come to accept.

Percy is our voice for unconditional love. It's why he loves and trusts so fiercely; loyalty is his fatal flaw. He hasn't received much love from the world, but he will hang on with dear life to the love of the few people in his life. He will sacrifice himself for Grover and Annabeth. He will lay down his life on a quest he didn't want for the slight chance it could bring his mom back. He is loyal and stubborn, and he can't, and won't, accept the gods' definition of love and family.

"This is the kind of family the gods are to each other..."

"But at least with the gods you know the rules"

Annabeth is our proxy for every child demigod at camp, for all the campers that drunk down the Kool-Aid camp half-blood and the gods are feeding them. Most of these kids didn't have a Sally in their life. They didn't have someone who loved them and stayed in their corner no matter what. "All that matters is that you're safe... I told him I believe my kid, it was a very short call".

Annabeth has fully bought into the fact that love is conditional, that to be the pride of Athena's offspring, she has to be perfect.

From the train cart scene, we understand that Annabeth felt loved by Frederick and that she was "treated as a gift", but even gifts can be returned.

To argue in favor of Frederick for a second here, the way children of Athena come into this world is extremely jarring for their mortal parent. In the case of most other gods that have normal relations with humans, at least both parties are in favor during the act (one can only hope) or can expect a child as an outcome. With Athena, a child just plops on your doorstep after a nice conversation you had with a woman once and surprise surprise! You're a parent now! Congratulations! No, we do not take receipts.

This doesn't set up the relationship between the kid and the parent to be amazing (just another way that gods keep being inconsiderate of mortals and their children), to Frederick's merit, at least he tries with Annabeth in the series.

Their situation is neither of their fault he knows that, so he reframes Annabeth's arrival as a gift (prompting her to idolize her mom even before she knew she was a half-blood). He tries to be a good parent to Annabeth, but if there's anything that Annabeth's story and the fact that he didn't even try to look for her in the 5 years she's been missing tells us that he wasn't all that grateful for Athena's gift. Yet again, the only instance of love Annabeth has ever known has been conditional. I'll love you until I start a proper family of my own. I'll love you until it becomes inconvenient to go after you.

This leaves Annabeth with only Luke... Even Thalia had her "prove herself".

Thalia was most likely worried about Annabeth's chances of survival if she traveled with her. Annabeth was 7, untrained, traveling with a forbidden child of Zeus, with Hades actively trying to kill them. It makes sense she would try to keep Annabeth at arm's length at first, for both their sakes.

TLDR: In the end, I believe the series is setting up Frederick to be more of a nuanced character. He tried with Annabeth but he let her run away, proving his love to be conditional. I think the series is setting up Annabeth and Percy to be mirrors of each other in the way they perceive and understand love, all to make it all the sweeter and more painful once they discover the traitor's motivations because Percy gets it, but Annabeth won't understand. Annabeth perceiving Frederick's love as genuine and unconditional even though he didn't look for her is essential to set up her worldview of the gods and parental love.

In my opinion, I love the story Arthur had with Mary, but with Charlotte he was so sweet; I don't see him with Sadie (especially since she still has Jake very much in mind) and I think Mary-Beth looks better with Kieran (although I feel that she did have a crush on Arthur but he respected her because of the age difference, I mean he was 36 and she was 21.)

But what do you think about all this? Who do you think could have been the perfect pair for Arthur in canon? <3

Hi Crystal! Sorry I didn't answer your question sooner! Here is my very long rambling about this.

My reasoning is as follows; Arthur needs someone who can see the best in him as he usually can't see it in himself. Someone who could bring him up and find virtues in him he can't see. I think he would also need some physical affection and someone able to calm him down when his bitterness or angriness wins the better of him. Most of all, I think he expects loyalty from his s/o, and if not unconditional love, a serious relationship at least, maybe a deeper connection at best.

With all this in mind, my first choice would be Charles. I know Arthur isn't canonically bi but you said I could mention him so here we are. There is a reason why this ship is so popular in the fandom: Arthur and Charles definitely have a deep chemistry. The thing that struck me the most about them was the immaculate respect they have for each other, and their trust is beyond any level! Never once does Arthur suspects Charles to be the rat, never once does his opinion of him flattens; Arthur cares about him, is interested in his story, in his wellbeing... Charles definitely is one of the few who sees the good man Arthur can be, who sees beyond his tough facade and "dumb brute enforcer" role. Charles is also a quiet and very calm man; I think his natural demeanor could really match Arthur's more anxious way of thinking and heated actions.

Mary-Beth is a very sweet girl, I like her character but she doesn't strike me as the perfect match for our outlaw. We know she doesn't believe Arthur is a cold-hearted killer and he takes the time to talk with him at camp, so it's a plus, but it ends there imo.

Same goes for Sadie; her loyalty and the trust they share is very meaningful for Arthur. What bothers me is that we don't see Sadie before her loss. During the game, she's a changed woman; even in the epilogue. Losing her husband clearly has impacted her and I think she wasn't that cruel/impulsive before. To me she's really good in the role of Arthur's best friend/sister. She's a bit too much like him, more as a reflection of himself (both share losses from loved ones, both are very action-based and brave, both can be impulsive and brutal).

Charlotte is an interesting one to think about. I love her missions and how Arthur is helping her without judging her life choices (you want to live on your own in the middle of nowhere knowing you would probably die from starvation to honor your dead husband? Okay, I'll show ya how to hunt). I think she could fit pretty well considering her loyalty, her determination, courage, and sweet personality; but we don't have a lot of material to work with, sadly.

Finally, I know Mary has a lot of haters around the fandom but I'm definitely not one of them. She, like Charles, is one of the only ones who saw the good in Arthur, and probably one of the first ones in his life, ever. From what we can see in the missions and understand from their relationship, I see her as a caring and devoted lover even though she had to end their relationship. Arthur is a criminal but she didn't see him as just that. Until the very end, she wanted to believe in his better self, and to me it's one of the most important things: Mary was there to bring out the good in Arthur and lead him to a better path. We sadly know he chose not to follow it, but Mary was still there after all this time, trying to make a better version of him, and save him from this circle of violence he's stuck in. Mary will remain imo, even though their story is tragic, one of the best choices for Arthur.

This is kind of a silly question but can you explain what you think Cosmos and Soundwave's dynamic is? For those of us who struggle with understanding characters,, cough cough me

Not a silly question at all! Not a silly question at all!!

I want to do a quick disclaimer I’m not the ceo of coswave (or am I 🤨) so everything I say is how I interpret coswave. I pull a lot from canon as well as my own hcs and stuff so it’s up to you whether you like how I interpret them!!

Soundwave and Cosmos’s dynamic from the beginning has always been about constantly learning and growing. These are two mechs who have very little experience with normal and healthy relationships (soundwave having significantly less experience than cosmos) so they end up building off of what they learn together.

They’re both very firm with their beliefs. Cosmos will never be a decepticon just like how Soundwave will never be an autobot. They compliment eachother very nicely with how they act and react to things, so where one mech struggles the other can be a pillar to lean on (for example soundwave struggles greatly with interpersonal relationships, so cosmos helps him with proper and polite interaction as well as trust building. Cosmos struggles with standing up for himself and putting his own comfort and safety first, so Soundwave helps him figure out how to say no when someone wants him to do something out of his comfort zone).

Soundwave’s idea of love stems from his understanding of loyalty which is incredibly unbalanced and unhealthy (ie complete devotion and submission). Cosmos’ idea of love is much more balanced but he tends to see love as something that is conditional (ie love that will only be given if you do something for them first). A massive part of their relationship is getting past these preestablished ideas of what love is meant to be and understanding how to treat their partner as an equal and treat love as unconditional.

Cosmos is not intimidated by soundwave one bit. He’s respectful of the fact that it’s Soundwave’s station that he’s on, but if he needs to challenge something soundwave says or does, he absolutely will. Cosmos may be nervous and has trouble standing up for himself, he is not shy about standing up for his morals or for other people. Soundwave is still a decepticon—he has selfish tendencies and nasty habits , but he won’t ever get too far in his malicious scheming if Cosmos has anything to say about that. Cosmos is always challenging Soundwave’s views and behaviors, and Soundwave honestly finds it exciting. Not many people can do that with the confidence and spunk that Cosmos can (and get away with it the way Cosmos can).

Soundwave has a whole decepticon space station to run and is notorious for Not Taking Care of Himself so fueling tends to be in the hands of Cosmos and TRUST Cosmos takes it very seriously. Due to energon shortages that effected the decepticons so bad during the war, Soundwave didn’t really fuel as much as he needed to (oftentimes giving his rations to his cassettes) so Cosmos was quick to rectify that and get him up to a healthy size. Cosmos keeps soundwave (and the cassettes) fueled and healthy.

Soundwave tends to express his love for his partner physically. He likes to have a hand on Cosmos’ plating whenever he is within reach, even if just for a second. He’s not good with his words (the irony of the communications officer who sucks at communicating) so he likes to show that he loves and trusts cosmos by touching him and letting him touch in return (this one is very important. Soundwave likes when Cosmos returns his physical affections the same way you say “I love you” back when a loved one says it to you). Cosmos, on the other hand, likes to express his love verbally. He doesn’t mind physical affection (he loves it) but he likes hearing it out loud. He praises soundwave and expresses how much he loves him on a regular basis, and though Soundwave struggles to return the affection verbally, he makes sure he holds cosmos extra tight or presses his mask against Cosmos’ own a little longer when Cosmos says I love you.

Seo Yul Deep Dive - Part 1

Well, since my class ended early and I have 20 min to kill, why not.

SO Seo Yul.

First off, I think he's a fantastic second male lead, specifically because he's more complex than just being a secondary love interest to bring drama to the main couple. He's not at all, in fact he's the opposite of that.

Seo Yul is everything all the adults wanted Jang Uk to be in terms of obedience, principles, and morals. He is upright with a strict moral compass, obedient to his elders, and is prone to agonizing over what the right thing to do is, especially once Naksu enters the picture.

He is the foil against which Jang Uk is being measured.

It would have been quite easy and probably acceptable to just make him one dimensional and have him be there mainly to pursue Naksu and be another obstacle in the way of our main couple, but they didn't do that AT ALL! And I'm glad they didn't. In fact, Seo Yul is one of Jang Uk's dearest friends and he cares about him a lot and vice versa continuously throughout the run of the show.

Seo Yul's love for Naksu, or lingering love from his romanticized memories of his time in Danhyangeok serve to further Seo Yul's own character development as well as highlight just why Jang Uk is actually a better romantic partner for Naksu.

The way they love her is very different. I'm not trying to discount Seo Yul's love for Naksu in any way, I think he definitely does and did love her, but he is someone who is incredibly committed to his principles and to following the rules; it's just how he's constructed himself across his life. So Naksu's very existence throws him completely off balance. On the one hand, he's so glad the girl he once loved and thought would never see again is alive. On the other hand, everything he's been taught and everything he believes in is screaming at him to kill her, that her existence as a soul shifter is not right and cannot be allowed to continue. Yet she is also giving his best friend, Jang Uk, everything he's ever wanted–she is making him HAPPY. So Seo Yul is just kind of going back and forth in his agony over what to do. He feels a great sense of responsibility because he believed he was the only one who knew her identity for a while, and he's generally relied on by the adults in his life like Park Jin and Heo Yeom to kind of be their sword and do the right thing.

Jang Uk on the other hand (as I've seen described in a post somewhere) is more loyal to people than he is to principles, whereas Seo Yul leans a bit more towards the opposite.

So for Jang Uk, he's willing to bend his morals or defy what everyone around him says is wrong out of loyalty to the people he cares about, and Naksu quickly becomes one of those people to him. Like she tells him, everyone has always wanted her dead; no one has ever actually attempted to save her. And I think that strikes deep into Jang Uk's heart and he makes a decision very early on that he will be the one to protect her, and he accepts any collateral damage that comes with it.

Where Seo Yul is sitting and agonizing over the principle of Naksu's existence, all Jang Uk is thinking is how he's going to protect her and keep her by his side. There's no question in his mind, no moral quandary about it. He is as loyal to her as he is to Seo Yul or Park Danggu, or Maidservant Kim–some of the most important people in his life.

In essence, Jang Uk is the type of male lead who would let the world burn for the person he loves while Seo Yul would be willing to make the sacrifice if it meant saving the world.

I don't know if either is necessarily better as an attitude, and I don't feel qualified to comment on that. But Jang Uk's attitude is why he is better of a romantic partner for Naksu, because she needs someone like that, to feel like someone will love her to such an extent. She's been betrayed and discarded and used so many times across her life that she needs and wants that kind of unconditional love–chosen unconditional love, I should say. Because Jang Uk CHOOSES to be loyal to her no matter what.

This stark difference between Jang Uk and Seo Yul really comes to a head in the conversation they have (can't remember the episode) that goes something like this:

Seo Yul: We have a duty to protect the world from monsters. [referencing soul shifters and citing what he's been told his whole life]

I'm totally paraphrasing because I don't have time to go look up the quote, but yeah.

Underlying this conversation, they're both really talking about Naksu, but I'm not sure how aware both of them are that are each referencing her.

This continues on later, once Seo Yul has kind of finally made the decision to let them be, to let Naksu be happy because he does really want that for her. He was even planning on whisking her away to Seo Fortress to protect her and to take responsibility for her which weighs heavily on his shoulders. So we know he cares about her a great deal, maybe even more than his principles, which is what puts him in such mental agony in the first place.

I'm really glad actually that Seo Yul and Naksu got to have a closure conversation near the end of Part 1 (even if it all went to shit after) because they had so much history that needed to be addressed.

This conversation was really a turning point for Yul (again before the tragedy of the last episode) because he had finally made his peace with disregarding some of his principles that have been drilled into him and that he's held onto steadfastly for so long in favor of both his friends' happiness. His loyalty to people superseded his loyalty to his principles.

But then the tragedy happens. And not only does his worst fear come true that Naksu will run wild and cause havoc upon his world, but it comes with a huge price. Danggu and Choyeon's happiness is ruined, many people are killed by her hand or injured, and worst of all, Jang Uk dies on her sword.

Just when he's finally made peace within himself, it all falls apart, and he interprets it as the world telling him that he was wrong. That he should have intervened, done something, even if that meant killing Naksu. That he should have been more pro-active. That everyone else was right, and he should have done something about the monster.

He's a very subtle but very interesting character, especially when contrasted with Jang Uk.

He puts a lot of pressure on himself (possibly an attitude adopted because of other people's expectations of him growing up as the only Seo heir but we don't really know) and tends to take on everything quietly. He loves very deeply, and you can see it in the way he interacts with all the people he considers dear to him. He's very thoughtful and considerate and is always thinking of others at his own expense. His love for Naksu and for Jang Uk only added complexity to his character, and I absolutely love him. I think he's one of the highlights of the show.

Don't mind me, just thinking about how Talia is the female version of Jason.

She grew up taught to kill or be killed, every bit of trust or vulnerability she has ever dared show, have been swiftly and violently been punished by both the League and fate. Her natural compassion and empathy is a liability she needs to throttle again and again, she can't afford to care or show she cares for anyone or anything lest they either exploit it as a vulnerability or become targets themselves. She doesn't believe in her father's mission but knows nothing outside of it, and anyway, leaving it all behind, even if it was possible, would leave her far too vulnerable. Tried that, got several metric tons of trauma for her trouble. She's forever torn between helpless loyalty, love, rage and yearning for the unconditional love and approval of a father too much of an exacting, unyielding and obsessive control freak to ever give it to her. Her mother was the only person who gave her a taste of a soft, nurturing heart and unconditional love, who she lost young and violently.

Damian was the one thing she had that was hers and only hers, and she had to keep her distance and raise him in a viper pit to obsessively craft him into something that would stand him the best chance of surviving anything that could take him away from her, and also be good enough to win the love and acceptance of both his father and hers. It's the only way she and Jason diverge. If Jason had a kid he'd either leave the biz entirely or give them up to an ordinary family, no half measures. The latter is in fact what Talia did at the end of Son of the Demon, even though the way she did it left a lot to be desired; in canon continuity it might not even have been a possibility given her father's obsession for an heir and the unlikelihood of their enemies never finding and pursuing the grandson of the Demon's Head.

All in all, even while her (pre-Morrison) actions can't be excused, Talia is exactly as tragic and traumatized and confused as Jason, and even more trapped. It would be bizarre how unwilling fandom is to see that and treat her with half the sympathy they do Jason if we didn't know exactly why that is. 🙃

Reflections upon Volumes 7 & 8 of RWBY by a first-time watcher

Hi, it’s me again. I’m writing this as I have already gotten into volume 9, but I believe it’s a good opportunity to recapitulate and review what has happened before the Ever After.

- Volumes 7 & 8 play around a lot with many ethical dillemas. We see all characters trying to figure out what is the right thing to do. Everyone has their own ideas about what is right, and this is exactly what is creating conflict. Ultimately, this struggle leads to the fall of Atlas. At the beginning, there is not a clear answer to the pending question of what is the right thing to do, but towards the end of volume 8, what becomes clear to the viewer is what isn’t the right thing, even if that isn’t clear to all of the characters.

- General Ironwood is the primal example of such a character. I admit that I was slightly more sympathetic towards him in earlier volumes, but volume 8 in particular made me despise him greately. That said, I don’t think he was completely on the wrong. He was driven by fear and rightfully so. However, that still doesn’t justify any of his actions. His hero complex blinded him and turned him into a violent tyrant who didn’t hesitate to kill anyone who disagrees with him (Jaqcues Schnee being the exception, he had it coming). He becomes dangerous and when his subordinates turned against him, he doesn’t even pause to think why. All he says is that he has always expected to be betrayed. Yeah, well I wonder why. He’s foolish to believe that loyalty is unconditional. He learns the hard way that this is not remotely true.

-Ironwood’s actions also create conflict within his own forces by bringing forth the dillema between fullfilling one’s duty and doing the right thing. Winter Schnee and the Ace-Ops in particular are those who struggle the most with this dillema. The deaths of Clover and Vine show that those above do not always have the best interests in mind, and blind loyalty leads nowhere but to distruction. Admittedly, I was shocked to see Clover die, but in retrospect I understand why it happened. 

-Conflict doesn’t only exist among the ranks of the Atlas’ military, but among the huntresses as well. It’s heartbreaking to watch team RWBY split and it’s not easy to claim which side was right (to me, both of them made valid points). The conflict exists not only on a team level, but also on a personal level, as we see among Ruby and Yang, or Ren and Nora.

-These two volumes focused quite a bit on Renora. I actually liked the fact that they decided to expand upon Nora’s character, because insofar she was the archetype of a “comical relief” or an accessory to Ren. It was heartwarming to watch them reunite and reach a common understanding of their relationship. Ren has a difficult time processing his anger and the rest of his emotions throughout these volumes, but ultimately he learns to manage them and to acknowledge Nora’s feelings too. 

-Speaking of ships, Bumbleby also becomes a lot more clear these seasons, although there’s a bit less focus on them this time around. But the signs become even clearer. For starters, the subtle flirting and Blake laughing with Yang’s jokes. To the more angsty side of the spectrum, Yang also fears that Blake thinks less of her because she made a different decision. Jaune does little to comfort her, assuming she’s talking about Ruby (he’s an oblivious idiot, I love him), but Yang’s response makes it obvious she wasn’t referring to Ruby LFMAO. Right after that when they return to the Schnee mansion, Ruby and Weiss are open to Yang, but Blake sits back hesitatly. But Yang approaches her, caresses her face and they bonk heads. AGAIN! And don’t get me started about all the blushing, I’m going to run out of space. But the rollercoaster of emotions idensifies when Yang falls into the void and we witness first-hand Blake’s despare. If it hadn’t been for Weiss, she would have jumped after Yang, I think we all know that.

-Penny has had one of the sudden stories (in my list, she’s up there with Pyrrha). How can so good a person suffer so much? But I think the most tragic part of her story was the fact that she gained a human body, only to die a little bit later on. I mean, I kind of expected it because it seemed to me that Winter becoming the Winter Maiden was sort of unavoidable, it’s so heavy implied. But it didn’t make it hurt any less. She was loved by so many people, her father, Ruby and her friends, and even Winter. 

-Speaking of Winter, at this point I’d like to mention how much I FUCKING LOVE this woman. I really liked her early on, but I was a little bit worried about the fact that she was Ironwood’s subordinate. But when she finally turned against him after realizing what a monster he is, I cheered so LOUDLY. Yass girl, now go chop his dick off- I mean, slay! I also loved her bond with Weiss, the Schnee sisters really said, fuck this stupid family. Yes, she gives Weiss some tough love, but she does love Weiss, I think beyond anything less. It suddens me how distressed she is now that she thinks Weiss is dead. 

-ALSO speaking of the Schnees, I’d also like to point out how the family instantly bonds again in the absence of Jacques. Again, fuck this GUY. The only good thing James Ironwood did was kill him.

-I hope I’m not alone when I say Winter and Robyn should kiss

-Although we are given some context about Cinder’s past, I cannot bring myself to sympathize with her. Yes, I can see why she became what she became, but that doesn’t make her any less of a horrible person. She also seems very childish to me. When Watts yelled at her, I was like: “When the worst person you know makes some good points”. I hope Neopolitan actually beats her ass the next time they meet. Cinder definately didn’t deserve Emerald’s royalty AT ALL.

-I also felt really bad when Hazel sacrificed himself in order to stop Salem, because although it’s not very explicitly shown, he grew to be something of a fatherly figure to Emerald at least. 

-ALSO WE SAW GLYNDA AFTER I DON’T KNOW HOW MANY SEASONS? GET MY GIRL OUT OF THAT BASEMENT.

-A little comment on volume 9 and I will call this a day, because this already an essay on its own and not just an afterthought LOL. It is clear Ruby WILL suffer a lot. The psychological trauma caused by the death of Penny, and the overall guilt about both Penny’s death and the fall of Atlas is just too much to handle. Ren was right to still call her a child back in volume 8 I believe. This is too much of a burden for a kid to carry. I will not be surprised to see her break down.

What are your least favorite lmk characters?

(lmk is one of the few shows where I think 'least favorite' is actually a fitting description. Most of the cast just have such fun and unique personalities, so it‘s pretty difficult to actively dislike any of them imo!)

I‘ve sat here for an hour trying to figure out which characters I would pick myself. I‘ve genuinely never thought about it before, that‘s how GOOD this show is 😆

Like- the Host Girl low-key feels like cheating. (Again- I don‘t dislike her but she doesn’t really have a CANON personality. Everything about her is purely fanon and hinges on her being Macaque‘s generic cute daughter.)

Not sure if Mo counts either. He doesn’t really rise in the rankings through virtue of being a cat for me. Most of the time there just isn‘t much for him to do.

I physically CANNOT pick someone from the main cast or the brotherhood- that hurts just thinking about it. ALL WOMEN ARE QUEENS (I have soft spot for Chang‘e in particular!). And even the characters we’re supposed to dislike are such a blast on screen! The Mayor was so fun! And Lady Bone Demon? As a least favorite? NEVER.

I guess by process of elimination my least fav is Syntax? That‘s the closest to a reoccurring character I can get.

IDK. Maybe you have a character that comes to mind immediately 🤔

I'm going to argue that there is some interesting stuff with Mo, and I may sound the way the pepe silvia guy looks, but that's okay. Anyways, episode 2x03 shows Mo's devotion/loyalty to Sandy, which on it's own isn't really much, but it's the fact that Mo is the one to bring sandy back in 4x06. Pigsy's big heartfelt speech doesn't do the trick, but Mo giving Sandy unconditional love does. And boy, is there something there! Like, "You said it Mo! The world may be full of darkness, but to let the light shine, all we need to do is stand together!" Girl, what is going on between Mo and Sandy! Mo get's a pass from me not by virtue of being a cat (I'm actually a dog person, I got 4 puppies), but by virtue of loving Sandy. We have so much in common.

But yeah! There really isn't a character I dislike in this show. I love everyone a lot, and most characters, even if they don't have interesting stuff going on are a blast to watch on screen.

I'm someone who is legitimately a fan of the Jade Emperor because of his one cool speech and subsequent death on screen. "Heh. And I suppose you think that person is you? How is it you come to stand before me today Azure, was there a point where you questioned it? Or were you too oblivious with your own delusion to realize that you were a mere piece in someone else's game. You may try Azure, the throne will be yours, but if you think I'll gift it freely, you are mistaken." Coolest shit ever. Big fan.

But. And I'm sorry to everyone, but I'd say Jin and Yin are my least favorites. I know. The gold and silver demons everyone loves. Like, they're fine, they're entertaining, they have a lovely placeholder as a manifestation of a simpler time, but that's also just kinda all they are. And they don't need to be anything else! It just also solidifies them as my least favorites asdfadsf. I'm sorry boys.

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader & Love in Star Wars

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends" (John 15:13)

Anakin´s character arc has many stages across the first six star wars movies, here I am going to make an observation on his character development when it comes to love as well as the differences between this an attachment.

Episode I: Phantom Menace: In this movie Anakin shows three types of love:

1.- Storge – Unconditional, Familial Love:

Storge refers to the unconditional love that parents have for their children. It is a protective, kinship-based love that embodies approval, sacrifice, and acceptance.

Storge looks a lot like philia, though it is more one-sided. Think of it as the love a mother has for her child, regardless of whether the child reciprocates her emotion.

Is the love shared between Shmi and Anakin, he built C3PO to help his mother in her work with Watto and had a plan to free her from slavery.

2.- Agape – Selfless, Universal Love:

Agape is one-of-a-kind love. It is an empathetic, selfless love for others that includes a love for God, nature, strangers, and the less fortunate.

It doesn’t depend on familiarity (as does storge), but instead, Agape has links to altruism, which is understood as an unselfish, genuine concern for the welfare of others.

Anakin is described by his mother as someone who gives without a thought for himself and he shows this by using his skills and to help Qui-Gon and Padme get the parts of their ship once they tell him they want to help Naboo. Anakin´s argument to her mother resumes this: "You said the biggest problem in the galaxy is that no one helps each other" This means he learned to love this way from his mother.

3.- Philia – Affectionate, Friendly Love:

Philia is a friendly love. Those soul-to-soul bonds, per se. It encompasses the love shared between friends and intimate family members and is characterized by loyalty and trust.

Anakin shows this with Padme, Jar-Jar, Qui-Gon and his fellow slave friends, especially his best friend Kitster Banai in TPM novel Anakin gives him part of the money won in the race so he would be able to free himself and others in time.

While this movie doesn´t show romantic/eros love, I believe it does show Anakin´s reason for loving Padme, he forms a bond with her for her beauty but also her kindness with him and her people. In the novel he aks her about the state of her planet, tells her he had a dream about her freeing her world and later helps stop the invasion by destroying the ship that controlled the droid army.

In this movie we also see the beggining of the crisis for Anakin, he gets the option of becoming a Jedi at the cost of abandoning his mother. His Storge love gets abruptly cut which begin the unbalance emotional and otherwise he shows in later movies.

Episode II: Attack of the Clones:

Apart from the other types of love shown, Anakin shows Eros/romantic love to Padme, the Philia love he felt for her became Eros in both their cases.

But Padme and he didn´t decide to follow their sentiments at the beggining, they recognized it could bring pain to their live to love a person in secret given each other duty to the Jedi and the Republic so they decide to stop and just cumply with their duty.

This changes once they are sentenced to die and Padme decides to go ahead a tell Anakin she´s also in love with him, given they are about to die anyway, she felt the need to be honest with him. They later marry in secret.

In this movie Anakin´s love for his mother, leads him to avenge her death, he´s furious with the Tusken Raiders but also with himself because he blames himself for losing control, for not being a good Jedi but also for abandoning his mother to her own luck and indirectly he blames the Jedi for keeping him from rescuing his mother.

Anakin still shows signals of Agape/Selfless love by keeping himself separated from Padme in favor of each other duty at the beggining of the movie but it´s important to note he didn´t learn this type of love from the Jedi Order, he learned it from his mother, so it´s interesting how he starts losing this type of love after his mother death.

Finally Anakin has an undefined Philia and Storge love for Obi-Wan, he looks at him as his friend but also as his father even if Obi-Wan doesn´t share the same sentiment. Obi-Wan looks at Anakin as his friend and feels responsible for him as his master but he doesn´t see himself as a parental figure for him.

Clone Wars Cartoon:

Anakin shows Philia/Storge/Romantic love for Padme, Philia/Storge love for Obi-Wan and Ahsoka, Philia love for Rex and the clones unders his orders and Agape love for the Republic and the Jedi.

I especially loved how Anakin showed love to Ahsoka in this series, because given she was his jedi apprentice, he keep all the Jedi teachings for her sake, because he valued way more her need for her to have a good development as a jedi than any current doubt he could have about them for his own personal reasons.

He protects her during the war, makes sure she learns what she may be behind off given her war duties, allows/gives way for other people to teach her and finally lets go of her because he knew he wanted to keep her in the Order for his sake, not hers and he understood her reasons for leaving.

So at this point, Anakin has let go of two people important for him, his mother and his padawan.

Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Agape/Universal love for the Clones in general, at the beggining of the movie he´s ready to help a clone in problems and the clone wars extend content about this, but also his duty to the republic, we are told he has been fighting for years at this point to help keep the republic together and while he´s ready to leave the Jedi Order once the war ends, so he can go live with Padme, he doesn´t hold ill thoughts towars the Order, he wants to leave and become one of the lost ones, after the war ends so it doesn´t affect the Jedi, to be able to raise a family with Padme. (Storge love)

He shows Philia/Storge love for Obi-Wan, but it´s still undefined and while it´s genuine, it has been affected by the secrets Anakin has keep from Obi-Wan, like his marriage to Padme or the death of his mother that lead to his massacre of the Tusken Raiders.

Unfortunately, once he has the prophetic dream of Padme dying at childbirth, Anakin´s Philia/Storge/Eros love for her becomes Manic love. Someone with this love style is likely to experience peaks of joy and troughs of sorrow, depending on the extent to which their partner can accommodate their needs. This is what the Jedi commonly call attachment.

Anakin gets afraid of losing Padme just like he did his mother and dreams every night about her dying, which keeps him from sleeping for long periods of time.

Anakin ultimately decides to sacrifice his other loves in favor of saving Padme at all costs/ even by betraying the Jedi. It ends with him losing everything and become a slave to Emperor Palpatine who worked for this end for years by grooming Anakin, Palpatine wanted him to become his servant at the cost of destroying the person he was, at the cost of destroying, his principles, love, compassion for others and mostly he got his wish, with one little exception, Vader´s regret/guilt for his actions and his wish for peace, despite everything.

His love then, became what the Greek called

Astorgos (A stor gos) which means "without love, devoid of affection, without affection to kindred, hard-hearted, unfeeling"

Episode IV - V: A New Hope/Empire Strikes Back

Darth Vader has no love left for others or himself, he treats himself as part of the imperial machine whose only objective in life is to follow Palpatine´s whishes, he treats other people in the same way. Of course, this has been beaten into him for years, the main difference being that he no longer has friends or family now, he´s on his own and he can´t no longer love.

His one saving grace left of the person he used to be is his wish to bring "Peace and Order" to the Galaxy by any means neccesary and openly practices the dark/twisted version of the "need of the many are more important than the need of the few". He has a legal obligation to protect the Empire but he no longer feels love for anybody there, least of all himself. His love became Astorgos.

At the very end of Episode V, we learn he has discovered he has a Son which begins to awake in him his Storge love but given the influence of the darkside in his mind, his Storge love for him is mixed with Manic love.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Darth Vader/Anakin has come to the understanding that he can´t defeat the Emperor on his own, Luke rejected his offer to defeat him together, so he´s resigned to his fate of dying so Luke can become the new second in command of the Emperor because acording to the rule of two, there can only be two Siths at a time and Palpatine is no one who would allows his apprentice to kill him.

Darth Vader mostly practices Astorgos that now has become complete Apathy with just little bit of Storge love remaning for Luke given he´s his Son.

When Luke offers him the option of leaving together, he wants Vader to remember who he was, the person he was is still there and that the Emperor has not taken from him all that was good in him. Vader is touched by his Son words but it´s not enough to bring him back to the light side, his storge love for Luke is mixed with his apathy towards the possible death or conversion to the darkside of his Son by his Master.

What ultimately changes this dynamic is the fact of Luke asking/begging Vader for help when Palpatine is killing him, something Vader knows is going to cost him his life, he can´t defeat his master but he can attack him and die together with him and he´s ready to do this if Luke gets to live, because he recognizes the love he used to have for family, friends and others in Luke and for the fact that despite the many reasons he gave Luke to hate him, he still loves him, he still trusts him to protect him as a father does, as Shmi did with him as what he should always have been for Luke. Vader can´t make up for his previous actions by dying but he stopped the horror, not just Luke´s death but the galaxy ´s oppresion by Palpatine´s imperial rule.

So we close the circle because Anakin´s love for Luke becomes Agape once again, Agape is also defined as unconditional, sacrificial love. Agape is the kind of love that is felt by a person willing to do anything for another, including sacrificing themselves, without expecting anything in return.

Just as he balances the universe in his role as the chosen one, Anakin balanced himself by becoming the person he once was, the person he was at the beggning of his story, the person missed and mourned by his family by Obi-Wan and by Ahsoka, the person who came back in ROTJ even if it costs him his life.

This is why I get upset when some parts of the fandom reduces Anakin´s love to the Jedi version of attachment, because while he clearly fell because of this, his actual character journey of getting back to the person he was, is all about the real love he felt for others and it was clearly shown in his character journey and it´s quite interesting to explore it in the movies and the clone war series.

Why Luigi Is An Awesome Comfort Character

Luigi, the younger yet taller brother of the iconic Super Mario. Luigi has proven to be an essential character throughout the many years he's been around. This green plumber had my heart from the moment I saw him jumping around on my colorful screen. Nintendo did a beautiful job with his complex character portrayal. This Italian man is courageous, kind, and affectionate because of his unwavering love towards his friends/family.

Unfortunately Luigi is often times overshadowed by his more renowned sibling, Mario. This puts Luigi into the position of the underdog. Him being an underdog helps the audience to connect with him. What can I say? I love relatable people (like Luigi). Mario is in the spotlight because of his fearlessness and strength. Luigi however, is more timid, cautious, and just overall more nervous. This causes the duo's dynamic to have more depth. It helps make their relationship special.

Luigi's anxious nature humanizes him. He faces things that scare him to no end plus his insecurities all for the sake of protecting his loved ones. He's extremely selfless. This highlights his strength of character and determination. I swear these two brothers are some of the most determined people I've ever met lol.

In most video games, the hero is fearless and bold but Luigi on the other hand is the exact opposite. We will typically see Luigi shaking with apprehension. It's like a breath of fresh air because of its originality. It offers a deviation from the common norm for heroes. Luigi may be afraid of a lot of things but he isn't afraid of being authentic and genuine with his emotions. He wears his heart on his sleeve for everyone to see. I also love emotionally vulnerable men! ❤️ I'm so glad that Luigi didn't let toxic masculinity infect him!

Greenie always perseveres through any trial he may face not because he is fearless but because he is full of love. This makes the man all the more endearing because he is human. Which is a nice change of pace from the usual mainstream characters who are seemingly invincible lol.

But anyway back to Luigi being awesome. A great defining trait of this plumber is his immovable commitment to his friends and family. Despite all the foes Luigi comes across, his loyalty and willingness to risk everything he has including his life, never falters. He is a great ally to have on your side. He is always ready and willing to lend a hand even if the task is a horrifying nightmare. This unwavering devotion really drives home the point that he is an "unconditional loving" type of guy. His bond with Mario is living proof of this.

Greenie is a distinct individual living his best life in his crazy world. The combination of his timid personality trait and heroic personality trait make him a complex character. Lol the the two traits are kind of a contradiction. I love the fact that it kind of makes him a bit of a paradox. This is exactly what makes this man so enthralling to watch. You can't help but be drawn to him because of how charming he is as a character.

Because he isn't fearless it makes me feel like it's okay to embrace my imperfections, fears, and quirks! Luigi shows fans that it's okay to be different and not live up to other people's expectations! He is such a babygirl ❤️

I can’t think of a single other person who would be a better match for you than TFA Starscream. Your heart is so full of love and forgiveness (girl I know you; you may be snarky but you’re such a sweetheart too), and he is in DESPERATE need of it. Despite his outward persona of an egotistical maniac, Starscream lives for the praise you give him. The words you write are beautiful, and the words you say about him make his spark flutter, derma quiver, and his optics shine a cherry red.

He’s going to be distrustful of your praise and affection at first, but still be drawn to it like a moth to a flame. How could he not? You’re everything he looks for in a person. Even if some dark part of his process thinks, insists this is conditional, he still comes back to you. He thought humans were disgusting till he met you (he still does, but shhhhhh you don’t need to know), but YOU, Primmus, you make him question everything.

Once you manage to convince him that your affection is unwavering and your loyalty is unconditional, the floodgates for all the affection and love he has for you opens. His main love languages are gift giving and words of affirmation, so expect LOTS of gifts. He’d steal the tiffany diamond for you, if you asked (and even if you didn’t… You’ve had to return it twice now).

Once he gets a feel for what kind of things you like, expect to never want again. He gets his grubby decepticon hands on the PS5 three days before it’s official release. That new Sailor Moon Victoria Secret collab? Yours. Looking for a new laptop because the ram on your current one is too slow? He gets you one of the nicest gaming laptops on the market.

He has a secret love of the ocean, so he loves flying you places to take you swimming. He’ll sneak you onto a private beach in Hawaii and that’s where he’d pop the question. Nobody but you to, the sunset behind your brown hair, skin reflecting the glow of the pinks and oranges across the sky. He kisses you when you say yes, and then complains about how you taste like salt water. (“Who dropped me in the middle of the pacific ocean!” He doesn’t look remorseful at all when he says “oops” and places his lips against yours again. You’ll have to fix that later.)

He calls you his fireball, or his little spitfire, and you probably hate it but the way he holds you in his hand as he brings you closer to your face warms your heart. Only a little. Not enough to kick his thumb as hard as you can before you kiss him. You both have your insecurities about things, and he won’t hesitate to try to soothe yours as soon as they rear their ugly head. (“You have more worth than Atlas could carry on his shoulders,” he says to you once, late at night under the stars. His whispers blows the sand out of your hair. “Where did you read that,” you giggle at him. “The poem writes itself when I look in your eyes.” You pause for a moment. “What did you do this time?” He pushes himself up and rolls over on top of you. “I did technically break the security system to get you onto this beach. We have about 15 minutes before they find us.” “… Damn it screams.”)

He’s a lot better at showing it than saying it, often times stumbling over his words when complimenting you. HOWEVER, he’s the president of your fan club and head of your defense squad. If anyone gives you shit or leers at you funny for how you dress he’s the first to tell them to gouge their eyes out. He’s incredibly protective of you, not because he doesn’t trust you (he trust you… a lot. More than he cares to admit to even himself), but because he doesn’t trust anyone else. He does like it when you show off the goods though. Please dress up for him around the house, he’ll lose his mind if he sees you in that skintight backless dress. I didn’t tell you this but he’s a sucker for bunny suits and virgin killer sweaters.

He really holds you in the highest regards. He hopes to rule Cybertron one day, with you by his side. He can’t think of a better queen. Your determination and wit are something he admires and adores, and the way you seem to care, so strongly and deeply, like it’s ingrained in you, makes him confident in your ability to rule beside him. He’s put all his chips in on you, so make it worth it for him. Please.

Your meeting is like an explosion. He’s never been too fond of the native inhabitants of this planet. But he’s also not too fond of a lot of things so you never take it to heart, even if your snarky comebacks say otherwise.

He’ll be the first to admit he didn’t like you at first. He’ll be the first to admit you didn’t make the greatest impression on him, craning you neck to look at him with those wide green eyes and then asking him if he was red or orange. “Tch, I don’t see how that matters human,” he had said, turning back to his work.

He doesn’t really see what you contribute to team prime until he sees all the little things you do with his own eyes. And as he observes you, he understands that you’ve woven yourself as an integral part of the team. The first time he sees it he’s almost shocked. The way you expertly herd Miko away from the ground bridge so she can’t sneak through with bulkhead. She was so busy talking about a new band with you she didn’t even realize that they left on the mission without her. He makes a point to thank you once she unglues herself from you.

After that he starts to notice all the things you do right, instead of all the things you say wrong. The way you make sure Raf actually eats something besides Capri-suns and twinkies, and how you make sure Jack takes a break from the X-box so his homework gets done. All the times you’ve snapped at him, “is you vox filter broken Ratchet?” have become a candle to the flame of the help you’ve done for the team.

He’s surprised to see this mom-friend attitude directed towards him for the first time. “When’s the last time you’ve recharged, Ratchet.” “Us Cybertronians don’t need to-“ “Stop deflecting you know you should have gone to bed cycles ago, haven’t you?” “Just because I don’t say anything you nag the other humans doesn’t mean-“ “Asking you to take care of yourself isn’t nagging.” Is it nagging? He asks himself. It certainly felt like nagging, even if it was coming from the heart and she had a point. He should have gone to bed cycles ago, if the warnings popping up on his HUD were anything to go by.

It’s this small victory that kickstarts your enemies to friends to lovers arc. He slowly starts relying on you as he notices that you can be relied on, that you want him to rely on you. That when you ask him about his day, its because you want to know about his day, and it’s not some attempt at human small talk. He opens up to you, slowly but surely, as he realizes that there’s a depth to you that he’s failed to see until now. It’s like somewhere deep in your human body there’s a spark, whirling in circles with an EMF that pulls him in the farther he pushes away.

Miko catches on first to his feelings. She finds out before he does. “You like her don’t you, Ratchet.” “Like her? She’s my team-mate!” “You like-like her, we can all see it.” “Get off of my desk, you tiny bolt-head.” “Doesn’t change the fact that she likes you back. Just go for it!”

So, he lets his spark drift closer to yours. He lets you help with projects, and he lets you sit on his shoulder to see the screen better. Sometimes, you need to tell him to step away from a project, and he takes you on drives and lets you read your writing to him. He treasures it deeply. If he can build up the courage, he’ll ask you to write poems for him, and when you read them to him he melts into a puddle. You can hear his engine purring and the static in his voice as he stutters out a “thank you.” He’ll forget to turn the AC on in his vehicle mode so you slip off your sweatshirt and he can see you in the crop top you wore underneath. He won’t tell anyone, especially you, but he loves the more revealing outfits you wear. You show him photos from when you went swimming with a few friends and he loses his mind.

(Take him swimming with you, he’ll find you a lake in the middle of nowhere and make a day of it. It’s not a date, he tells himself as he pulls out a picnic basket. It’s not a date he tells himself as you rest your hands on his. It’s not a date he says as he constantly glances at your lips. It’s not a date he says while he thinks about how soft they are. It’s not a date he says when you ask to touch his face. It’s not a date when you press your lips against his derma and he finds everything he didn’t know he was missing in that moment.)

You become significantly closer to him after that 8 hour disappearance, laughing while toweling yourself dry walking through the ground bridge. He’s quick to try to keep you safe from harm, he’d become the wall between you and the decepticons if he had to. He hopes he doesn’t, he’d much rather spend the rest of your life with him than spend his to protect yours, but he’d claw his spark out of his chassis for you.

The first time he comes to your house, a small cottage in the middle of nowhere, no-one for miles in the desert, he can’t help but hold you close in your backyard, sharing constellations and stories and kisses between giggles. This is a well-deserved break for the medic. You’ve become his resting place, his home, his hearth, his heart. And he tells you this. He tells you he loves you. (“Love is ridiculous,” you remember him telling you one day at the base, “love is something I’ve never found or wanted the time for.” He remembers your somber smile at his ‘bah-humbug’ attitude. “You’re lucky I think you being grumpy is cute.”)

You cry when he chooses to stay on earth instead of go back to cybertron. You cry when he chooses you over his home, the very thing he spent half his life fighting to protect. And you cry when he asks you to stay with him for all of it. He feels a sense of duty to protect the earth. He feels a sense of duty to protect you. He’ll be the wall between you and all your troubles, if you can be the wall he can lean on when he’s tired.
