in a youtuber by the name twiins ink video on rwby around 6:41 in twiins video she called Oscar a white boy with tan skin tone but i think Oscar is just tan or is a character of color caz when you look at the main cast they all just seem like there all whitekid and thats ok but Yang,Ruby rin and Blake i think are asian coded so i think Oscar is black coded

Hello anon-chan. I’ve listened to a couple of Twiins’ videos on RWBY here or there in the past and I usually take her opinions on things with a grain of salt. In respect to Oscar’s ethnicity, I suppose every RWBY fan seems to have their own interpretation of that since I’ve heard different ones during my time in the FNDM.

Speaking for myself as a Pinehead, I personally don’t think Oscar is black-coded since I’ve never perceived him as being black at all and I honestly don’t know where the thought of Oscar being considered as a black RWBY character came from.

(As a black person myself, I must ask rather bluntly in my Trini tongue, what part of Oscar BLACK? Like whey? )

While I agree Oscar is definitely a boy of colour, I never once pegged him as black or even black-ish. While he may be of a darker complexion than Ruby Rose, he’s also leagues lighter than characters such as Emerald Sustrai and Marrow Amin who I more perceive as “black characters” in RWBY.

It is for this reason why I’ve always more liked the idea of Oscar being Hispanic/Latino; if we’re talking real world ethnicities. Since if we’re talking race in the world of Remnant, Oscar’s race is technically Mistrali human since as far as I’m aware, Remnant only has two known races of people---humans and Faunus differentiated by the kingdoms and societies that the characters hail from such as Blake being a Menagerie Faunus while Sun is a Vacuoan Faunus and Marrow is an Atlesian Faunus. Y’know like that.

Another theory for Oscar’s ethnicity that I quite like a lot is Oscar being biracial---having one parent who is light-skinned while the other is dark-skinned. That’s more where I stand with that. Oscar Pine is a biracial POC in this squiggle meister’s books.

As we Trinis does say, the lil prince mixed allyuh! He’s not exactly white but he ain’t black either. That’s my opinion on that. Take it as you will m’fam.
