a little while ago, I was contacted by Amal Abushaban, a Palestinian mother of 5, for help regarding her Gofundme campaign.

In summary, after spending months raising over $13,000 for her family, she attempted to withdraw the money. She did everything right, she answered Gofundme's questions, she provided the details of her beneficiary and she contacted their support team - only to be left in the dark until an email came one day, notifying her that her campaign had been closed and all donations were now in the process of being refunded.

I tried kicking up a major fuss about it online, as well as trying to pester Gofundme Support on my own account, but all it did was send me in circles as I desperately pleaded for the Gofundme Support person I was assigned to at least re-instate the damn fund. Even worse, Amal got her first email today about refunds going through.

Regrettably, Amal is being forced to start over completely in her fundraising efforts. Her beneficiary has started this Paypal fund for her. Please donate and share!

I’ve noticed this super fun thing (and by “super fun” I mean wow you’re all assholes) thing where, if I talk to someone who isn’t a foaming-at-the-mouth-terminally-online-Hamasnik-Jew-hater about what I actually BELIEVE about Israel and Palestine (I personally think that a two state solution and major changes in both governments are needed), people tend to listen and agree with me.

And then I say I’m a Zionist and all that agreement goes out the window. Because people have decided that Zionism means not what Jews say it means (since it is, you know. Our fucking word), but what a bunch of racists who hate us have decided it means, and so what I actually think and want for the people of Israel and Palestine- which is some fucking peace- doesn’t matter. And that’s not the only thing that drives home to me that this whole “anti-Zionism” thing has nothing to do with caring about Palestine, but it sure is one of them.

This is the door to companies not even notifying people of other races about promotions and opportunities. They dress it up with buzzwords to distract you from what they’re really doing. Don’t be fooled.

If you’re talking about this, make it plain. Too often, we assume people know the history and implications, but they count on us not connecting the dots. They rely on our silence.

Why do I always speak on race? Because I knew how quickly they’d try to take away progress if we weren’t vocal, active, and strategic. If we don’t have leaders who are willing to speak up and fight back, policies like this will dismantle decades of hard-fought progress.

This move directly harms the economic progress of Black people, and if you think it stops here, you’re mistaken.

It's kinda shocking to me how few people seem to know how prevalent the 'my great grandmother was cherokee' myth is and how it's almost never actually true, especially when it comes with things like 'never signed up' or 'fell off the trail' or 'courthouse burned down destorying the documentation' etc etc.

People just don't even seem to know the history like.. when the Trail happened. My great great great grandfather was 2 years old during Removal in 1838, so peoples 'my great grandmother hid in the mountains!' is so clearly wrong. And we have rolls. From before and after removal, rolls done by cherokee nation and others by the government, rolls that were not stored in one random flammable courthouse. It's not difficult to find the actual evidence of ancestry.

And just.. there are lots of ways those family stories get started. It was a practice during the confederacy to claim cherokee ancestry to show one's family had 'deep roots in the south' that they were there before the cherokee were removed. Many people pretended to be cherokee and applied for the Guion-Miller payout just to try to steal money meant for cherokees - 2/3rds of the applicants were denied for having 0 proof of actual cherokee ancestry. [We even see lawyers advertising signing up for the Miller roll just to try to get free money.] And the myth even started in some families in the cherokee land lotteries, where the land stolen from us was raffled off, including the house and everything that was left behind when the cherokees were removed. We have seen people whose families just take these things stolen from the cherokee family and adopt them into their own family story, saying that they were cherokee themselves.

If you had some family story about being cherokee and you wanna have proof one way or the other, check out this Facebook group run by expert cherokee genealogists that do research for free. Just please read the rules fully and respect the researchers. They run thousands of people's ancestries a year and their average is only around 0.7% of lines they run actually end up having true cherokee ancestry.
