the people who can travel outside of the borders of a legal oppression are those who are able financially, physically, mentally, and social obligations-wise. in ireland that meant that pregnant people at the most dire intersections of capitalist oppression were denied abortion bodily autonomy. if you didn't have the money, couldn't take off work, couldn't leave behind people in your care or organizing and taking a trip was beyond your physical or mental remit, fuck you i guess?

liberals would often come back with a "we can fund charities that can help" rebuttal — thee most liberal of solutions because it does nothing to challenge the oppressive system, and also reinforces paternalistic ideas of agency conferred by their own philanthropic largesse. that thriving is something to be doled out by their organizations instead of something that should be owned and acted on by people themselves.

every time you leave systems of oppression unchallenged and tell people to make their own way to safety, you reify those systems as valid as you're leaving room for them to exist.

and people who benefit in some way from the structures of capitalism and class society that precipitate these violences will always be invested in doing just that. they might want to make sure that they aren't touched by those specific forms of structural violence (and preserving their wealth is a good way to do that), but truly challenging a capitalist system they benefit from will be always be a worse sin to them than its inherent violence.

that's where the liberal impulse to try these narratives of 'well just move — i'll even help!' comes from. they've got to get people to buy into a seemingly well-intentioned narrative in order to legitimize their methods of preserving class society.

people need to recognize this as a ruling class co-optation of genuine struggles for liberation, because as capitalism convulses in chaos around us, this is only going to get used more and more to try and fracture revolutionary solidarity and preserve the blood-soaked scaffolding that allows them to protect their own living standards.

and yes, history shows that they'll turn to fascism when the working class starts rattling that framework before they let it be dismantled from the goodness of their bleeding hearts.

The thing blue state leftists don’t seem to understand about red states is that telling minorities to “just leave” is really insidious. That is exactly what the republicans want. They want to make their state so miserable and dangerous and scary for everyone who isn’t a conservative cisgender heterosexual white Christian that those people leave. Leave behind their family, their homes, their friends, their jobs, their community, the places they’ve lived their entire life. With every person who leaves it is one less gay person teaching their children, one less person protesting outside the capitol, one less blue voter trying to stop the place they call home from sliding into fascism.

Many of us cannot afford to ‘just leave’ and many of us don’t want to because contrary to popular belief, North Carolina isn’t an irredeemable shithole with nothing to offer and no sense of community. People do leave red states for their safety but that does not fix the underlying problem, that doesn’t even make the problem better.

listen I'm not gonna be a Curly apologist he did Fucked Up as captain but I genuinely recommend ppl watch a playthru that goes thru the game in chronological order. It kinda helps clear up the events and gaps between them, bc even tho u See the times, you still experience it out of order.

The stuff Anya says definitely sets off alarm bells but it doesn't seem like he Fully Understands what she means, and I'm going to be 100% honest I think she was trying to repress it herself. This isn't to say that she is AT ALL "at fault" for what happened after and she should've gotten help even if she wasn't ready to fully discuss the issue but I genuinely think she herself was still coming to terms with things, so she didn't necessarily process the full impact before talking to Curly, and a lot of what happens occurs after they're laid off- like this delves into personal interpretation but I genuinely think Anya only registered Jimmy as a serious danger after his outburst towards Curly. Ofc my interpretation is limited bc of the limited pov in game and not having gone through what she has, but it personally reads more akin to coercion over time than a singular Obviously Violent incident (like. Not to say that Sexual Assault isnt violent in nature, just that coercion often specifically works to obfuscate the fact it is a form of violence.) The layoff is a Massive catalyst for her bc of Jimmy, in that she now has a very clear understanding of his capacity for aggression.

To extrapolate a little from the "Dead Pixel" conversation, she starts by saying she Likes The Screen (even though it's fake). While Curly has his quotes about the pixel "not ruining the illusion" which. Y'know is Symbolic Of His Flaws. She doesn't say the pixel ruins it, just that she can't get it out of her mind.

If we take the pixel to represent her Or jimmy, either way the way she talks about it kind of downplays things, like it's a Minor Thing that's Slightly Upsetting, but she's still okay with the big picture. Idk I could be 100% wrong but that is my take

Besides that, Anya tells curly she's pregnant 2 days before the crash, and it isn't until she outright states it that he starts Putting The Pieces Together. I want to note, he says "I'd do anything" and "this doesn't have to go on our performance evals" 1. Before he knows shes pregnant 2. Under the assumption she might attempt suicide, and I doubt he even thought about her using the gun on anyone else before she brings that up. He says literally before the line where she tells him she's pregnant that "being laid off isnt a reason to hurt [herself]". Like I've seen ppl talk about the performance evaluation thing like it's about her and jimmy, but I think he's referring to (his belief) that she might attempt suicide or similar which might genuinely be a consistent thing he's seen her struggle with, given she's able to go through with it. Also just to note: assuming their society is like ours (hellish) reassuring her he won't blab Abt her mental health is like. Genuine reassurance- lots of mentally ill ppl will Not Open Up bc it could have long term consequences (like. For example. On employment) ANYWAYS I hope it doesn't come off like "Curly never failed Anya" but rather "Curly approached this specific situation without the context of why Anya is panicking and (possibly validly) assuming she's dealing with a very different issue"

Also let me say again the time frame is 2 days. We don't Really see what happens, but we know Anya tells Jimmy without Curly knowing. I genuinely believe he maybe didn't do a Great Job in those two days (the fact he says Anya should've talked to Him before telling Jimmy is uhhh. Mm. 1. Your job to create an environment where she comes to you my man 2. Weird to tell her what she should do with HER OWN PERSONAL INFORMATION) but like.

I get a lot of ppl want immediate consequences but consider that they can't really get rid of Jimmy (co pilot. Which is. Y'know it's Own Problems) but also like. Curly knows Jimmy, and we know that Jimmy tends to lash out. Curly should probably Not Confront Jimmy Unless He Knows Exactly How To Keep Him From Hurting Anya. Like I'm not an expert but this is something genuinely important- when confronting an abuser you NEED to take into account the impact it can have on their victim, and sometimes for the victims safety you need to wait until you have a Solid Plan. It sucks but it's important.

And theres discussion to be had about Curly kinda going along with Jimmy saying "well what if we all died" and like. I do believe he Didn't Realize What Jimmy Said. Like he was just processing/trying to keep the situation under control (and failing because he underestimated how willing Jimmy was to hurt everyone including himself).

Like he's definitely an enabler but I would say his problems are mostly before he understands the gravity of the situation, in that he's friends with Jimmy and assumes the best of a man with abusive tendencies, and fails to create an environment that can keep Anya and the others safe. Like, he definitely doesn't handle in game events perfectly (psych evaluation for one- he does do it instead of Anya which is actually helpful, but he still treats it like. Weirdly.)

Idk I have a lot of thoughts about this game and I don't necessarily want to defend Curly but more like. Anya's situation is very delicate (and light on details) so sometimes the way ppl talk Abt it feels like they aren't actually focused on what she wants and what it means to prioritize her safety y'know?

Edit bc I just now figured out kinda how I want to word it: curly is an enabler and making things worse bc he doesn't put a stop to Jimmy's BS, but in the specific scenario we see in game I think he's trying to use his Skillset of like, people pleasing not for Jimmy's sake but for the crews (like "if I nod my head and say I sympathize he won't lash out and hurt them") which like. There are situations which that is unfortunately the safest option (on an individual level yes, but sometimes it's also necessary to prevent abusers lashing out in response toward ppl who are more vulnerable) but it was the Wrong Choice.

It's like. I think Curly was trying and had good intentions, and understood that he needed to protect the crew, but he didn't have the toolset/experience to realize he can't Just go along with things and that he needs to be able to set hard limits, even for ppl he likes and trusts. Like he failed but the failure was "for want of a nail", where it began way before what we see (for want of an understanding of power dynamics I guess.) Again, don't think this makes curly more forgivable or whatever, I just think he's a good example of trying to make the right choices when you never realized you'd have to make these kinds of decisions and therefore are unprepared and/or unaware

Second edit: personally I don't think you can really incapacitate jimmy without there being serious risk (again he's the copilot) but curly should've given Anya the gun when she told him Abt the pregnancy

I know I complain about this constantly but it frustrates me whenever I need to edit a template to say "the engineer. She....". Instead of "the engineer. He.....". When it's a female engineer. I don't think anyone else has ever changed the pronouns but IDK! I think we should stop using "he/him" pronouns as the default for engineers on official documents!

Our office is rare in that it's 50% women in engineering so idk why we put up with this.

nathan is pretty quiet and reserved when it comes to regular conversation. he prefers to hang back and listen to others talk, and generally only speaks when spoken to or when something that's brought up prompts him to jump in. however, when it's something work-related, he tends to talk a lot more, since he's good at strategizing and needs to give his input so people will know what his opinion on the matter is

he definitely starts talking more when you get to know him better, slowly but surely feeling more comfortable to bring things up out of the blue rather than wait for others to start a conversation with him instead. though he still tends to be a man of little words; very short and straightforward answers, doesn't like dancing around the point of his sentence. unless he's talking about tech-related stuff, in which case he can talk for hours about whatever code he's been working on

📚 BOOKS: Do they like to read? What kind of books do they like?

nathan isn't a big reader, mostly because he struggles with it and he doesn't have the attention span or the patience to sit through that much text. if he needs to pass the time somehow, he might end up reading some short stories or articles online or in a magazine. he prefers articles about technology or science, and in fiction, naturally so, likes sci-fi, but also thrillers and mystery books!

🧳 LUGGAGE: Do they like to travel? What’s their favorite place to visit?

nathan hates traveling and generally doesn't leave the krimson city area unless he's being forced to (when he was with mobius he'd occasionally have to go to the east coast for business, which he hated, but at least the pay was good). nowadays there's absolutely nothing that can be done to get him to travel anywhere, though he would really love to visit yellowstone national park one day. it's mostly just a daydream scenario more than anything else, though, he doesn't know if he would actually commit to it if given the opportunity

🌠 SHOOTING STAR: If they had one (or three) wishes, what would they wish for?

nathan would wish for financial stability forever (which he sort of gets when ruben gets his job at the research lab because the pay is very good), a chance to get to kill the administrator with his bare hands, and to make him forget about what went down in STEM (but in such a way where he does remember that it happened, but he just doesn't remember all the traumatic events, and he doesn't get curious about it so he won't go digging for it either)

it'd make sense for him to wish that rosie was still alive, and if he only got one wish then he would consider going with that option, but her death also shaped his whole life and he's too scared to find out how different it would've been if she hadn't died; his parents had still hated him, and he wouldn't have had a pleasant childhood either way. and in addition to that, he also doesn't know how his parents would have changed; maybe they would've started hating rosie too at some point, and he really doesn't want to accidentally expose her to any of that. so he wouldn't wish for that at all, just because there's too many uncertainties that would come with it

💔 BROKEN HEART: What would break their heart? What’s the worst thing a significant other or a close friend could do to them?

nathan's heart breaks very easily over the littlest of things, but he knows it's because he's very sensitive especially to stuff like rejection or disagreement. he generally gets over it pretty quickly, so it's never really an issue. if we're talking about irreparable damage, it'd be permanently walking away from him; whether it's done by ruben or any of his friends. he often worries that it'll happen, especially because of his own tendency to just vanish off the face of the earth sometimes because of his episodes, and if people were to walk away from him forever it'd break him

💤 ZZZ: What are their sleeping habits like? Do they snore, move around a lot, etc.?

nathan is a very light sleeper, but he can also easily fall back asleep when woken up by something. whenever he does slip into deeper sleep he tends to have very bad nightmares or gets sleep paralysis due to the longterm effects STEM has had on his psyche, so he prefers to go to sleep in a room with a light on or some music playing so it won't have to get to that point

he sleeps about five to six hours a night on average, which is not a lot and tends to be even less when he’s working on an important project. all of this generally results into him being out of commission during the weekends which he tends to spend in bed for most of the time, albeit wide awake. later on when he gets some proper medication, he starts sleeping a lot more and ends up with an average of nine hours a night, which is more or less the amount he needs to be able to function properly

god it is always going to drive me nuts that the moriarty the patriot anime skipped so much stuff and then gave it an ending in which moran isn't missing, MI6 was literally just formed with louis as its leader (plus moneypenny never existed and neither does moran's whole backstory), and sherlock and william somehow didn't stay together after the fall and sherlock had to go to freaking switzerland to find him, so it's like how would they ever continue to adapt the story of the manga even if they wanted to 😭

i watched the anime first, and knew about a number of things that were missing because i'd seen screenshots of them online in the past: mainly the conversation between sherlock and bonde in chapter 19 where he talked about his struggle to make the criminal justice system more equal, and literally all of chapter 31. but there is so so much else i didn't know about, so many entire chapters and important details and huge sections of other chapters!!! i ended up loving the anime but still feeling as though pretty much none of the major characters and relationships got as much development as they needed and that it was overall a bit rushed... and then i read the manga and felt so much better about how fleshed out literally everything was in comparison to the anime.

like. my dad is an anime fan and a sherlock holmes fan so i recommended the series to him, and have been explaining manga details to him that i felt were especially important. but i honestly just might ask him to read the manga if he likes the anime enough, even though he's not normally a manga reader. because during the whitechapel arc, when sherlock refuses to investigate the jack the ripper case and never elaborates on why... he thought sherlock was being an asshole who didn't care about the victims! sherlock holmes, who's supposed to care just as much about equality and justice for the oppressed as william does! but it's understandable because that's how the anime makes it look by cutting out his explanation and statement that he is in fact going to investigate! and i'm worried he's going to think sherlock saving william is rushed as well unless i make him read chapter 31 before he finishes. gahhhh why did this anime not just get an additional season instead of speedrunning to the final problem as fast as they could??
