re: my tags on that last post that's actually something I've been thinking about a lot. I mostly show my love by doing things and showing up (either materially or emotionally) for other people when I recognize there's a need, and 1. a lot of people like to deny out of politeness or think I'm doing it with an expectation that it's transactional, and 2. most people don't really seem to show up for me like that. which is... fine, again I don't expect it to be transactional, but--especially when people get used to it and it becomes an expectation rather than a gift, it can really start to feel like I'm being taken advantage of. Idk how to tell people that without making it seem like I don't want to do things for them!!! Because I do!! I just want to be appreciated for it. An offer to pay for gas money (which I'll deny), a "hey if you ever need help with (x) hmu," even just a genuine thank you (especially if your resources are stretched thin--sometimes people can't offer anything and that's ok)--just like... idk, I want to know people appreciate me and a lot of times it feels like they don't

OK so I want to stress that this is NOT a slight against OP of this post or how they feel about the way the game presents certain options, but I've seen sentiments like this before and I feel like people still aren't quite grasping WHY the game doesn't allow the option to do a "slow burn romance where you can show him you truly care about him beyond sex" if you ascend him. So I wanted to take the opportunity to talk about Astarion's route and objectification, and the very intentional limitations of player choice regarding the ascension path.
Tumblr media
Objectification is the act of degrading someone to the status of a mere object. It often involves a sexual component, but not necessarily. It's reducing someone to being a tool or toy, as if they have no feelings/opinions/autonomy of their own. In Astarion's case, his objectification is very much tied to his sexuality, but also his own views on power and control, and how that reflects on both him and his romantic partner.
I think people get too fixated on Welch's quote "it's reducing your relationship with him back to being a kink/form of gratification... it's very much admitting you failed to think of him beyond a sex object" and take this as commentary or judgment on the players choices, when it isn't actually that. It's quite literally the story that is baked into the route and Astarion's character as a whole. There are obviously reasons to ascend him that have nothing to do with how you personally feel about him as a character, ie you want stats, you think it's just more fun, or interesting, or you like the tragedy, etc but in regards to the story itself? It's actually more commentary on how Astarion views himself more than anything else. He is an intentional subversion of the seductive vampire trope. You cannot engage with his story without interacting with this aspect of his character.
Even if you had a dialogue option to try and initiate a romance with him without that first night of sex, Astarion wouldn't take it. If you had a dialogue option to "show him you cared and want to protect him" he would either scoff at it or get angry, as he does if you try and express similar sentiments about protecting him from Cazador. He doesn't want to be coddled. He doesn't trust mindless heroism or altruism. He initiates sex because he uses it as a tool for manipulation and insurance of his own safety. You can either play into that manipulation or don't (and he seems to respect you more if you don't, which says a lot about his self worth). You can't initiate a slow burn romance because Astarion is so distrustful of EVERYONE and has no ability to conceptualize genuine care at this point in the game due to his mistreatment as a vampire spawn. This is an incredibly important aspect to his character and to change the foundation of this is to rewrite his character entirely.
(There is ONE exception to this: Karlach. Karlach is the only character that can initiate more of a slowburn with Astarion and won't sleep with him the first night because she quite literally, physically can't. And Astarion doesn't immediately accept this either. He belittles Karlach, to the point of calling her frigid and basically defective, wondering if he's wasting his time, before she chews him out for being an asshole. Again, he has no idea how to approach a relationship without using sex as a transaction and it shows. He only goes along with it because he quite literally cannot do his normal routine. This is the only reason he won't start a relationship with Karlach using sex.)
So anyways, that choice at the start? The way Astarion's romance initiates on the first night? It intentionally parallels the way ascended!Astarion will offer you an ultimatum: become his spawn or leave him. At the start of the game, Astarion intentionally plays into the sexy vampire trope to get what he wants, is highly paranoid, afraid and distrustful of everyone. At the end of the game in the ascended route... he's intentionally playing into the sexy vampire trope, is highly paranoid, afraid and distrustful of everyone, only this time he has power to back him up. Nothing about his views has been fundamentally challenged if you ascend him; he's completely validated in his beliefs about power and control and entirely in the mindset that he has no value without becoming the ascendant.
It's not about whether you personally find him sexy or not. It's not about having sex at this point. It's not about you or your character. Astarion objectifies himself, fully playing the only hand he knows (as he himself puts it) because that is all he knows how to do. In the ascended path, he has been shown no other option. Your character, good intentions or not, has not given him the tools to see himself as anything else. There is no way too make himself see himself as anything else, except by not ascending him! Either you let this man degrade you as he degrades himself, or don't. That is the option provided, and anything otherwise wouldn't make sense without rewriting his character completely.
Do you value what he actually wants (freedom) or do you value what he says he wants (power, because he views it as the only way to get that freedom)? To me the game makes it obvious (ESPECIALLY with the newly added epilogue) that walking in the sun again or gaining the power of the vampire ascendant aren't the keys to Astarion's happiness. Stuff like that, while nice, doesn't magically grant him peace and it's not a substitute for character growth and self reflection. It honestly just feels like people want the personality and development of spawn Astarion but in the ascended Astarion path, which doesn't make any sense with the way the story unfolds.
Anyways, I just wanted to say that objectification can be more than just seeing someone as a sex object, and doesn't necessarily have to do with sex itself. It can tie into views about power and degradation and a lack of self respect. Furthermore, it's not the game telling you you're a bad person or some sex addled freak if you ascend him, it's asking you to engage with what Astarion's personal story can say about sexuality, cycles of abuse, trauma and recovery - for better or worse.

How do you feel about Liane Cartman? I see a lot of debate about her character and how she's impacted Eric, so I'd love to know what you think! Also love your art, it always puts a smile on my face when I'm stressed out :) <3
I’m fascinated by Liane as much as I pity her. Her character was the byproduct of Trey’s lasting grief over his cheating fiancé (of the same name) and in the early seasons, her one dimensional attitude was just a surface level explanation why Cartman starts out as a brat. All characters are a tool to convey the message or feelings of the author, but Liane more than any other character to me, is a literal representation of Trey’s embitterment.
But as Trey got over that grief, it reflected in Liane’s portrayal. She’s not just a whore, doing drugs if she’s not tending to eric’s demands or cooking. We start to get hints that she’s artistically and musically inclined, that her love for Cartman is overly saccharine (pet names, babying) as much as it is transactional (“if you go to the ice show with me, I’ll give you a toy”) if not hinted to be conditional (hesistance in assuring she loves cartman regardless if he’s ginger or not, her asking if it’s too late if she can abort an 8 yr old). But somewhere down the line… I wanna say tsst, or coon trilogy… she’s tired of putting of with Cartman and starts to resemble other south park female characters that are fed up with their male counterpart for their incompetency or moral failure (such as wendy or sharon). That character transition is bumpy in my eyes, and with the implication she’s given up her “adult tutoring” to fully take on the responsibility of parenting Eric, trying to get a stable job and seemingly no longer taking drugs, I question what it is of her we’re left with. Whoredom and poor parenting is the foundation of her character, after all.
At the very least I’m glad the show/ liane has the self awareness to verbally acknowledge she hasn’t been a good parent (Shots). And I appreciate her talking directly to the crowd of sp and therefor us in saying that at least now, she’s trying. It made me realize that like Eric, she’s received little sympathy from her peers and even less grace in her efforts to change.
I don’t know why Liane’s parenting is a topic of debate when SP shows us that her life is lonely, she bore a child she didn’t want but kept to treat as a friend than a son, who’s lifestyle choices made her irresponsible to raise a child. All of which contributes to Cartman’s rancid behavior. This isn’t subtext, or reading between the lines, or overwritten canon. From season 1 to now, this is what we know of Liane.
I’m not opposed to the modern shift in her portrayal as long as she is written with solid personality traits to keep it grounded. To keep Liane, well, Liane.
But that’s it isn’t it? of the 25 years we’ve known her, we don’t really know who Liane is other than the few things outside of sex she likes. And with the focus of Cartman and Liane in overarching stories like the hotdog arc, I think adding depth to her character and mapping out who she is would enrich these stories, especially in light of Cartman seeming to finally, belatedly, apologize for his actions (panderverse).

I clipped this from your post because it’s easier than trying to inaccurately summarize! But I was wondering what you think about this dynamic. Whether you see it as a core part of his characterization and what you think it says about him, or whether you see it as kind of a visual shorthand in the series that isn’t indicative of anything about his approach to sex? It seems to me to be very consistent over the years and I’m curious about your take.
Yeah I think the repetition/consistency in how they show this makes it a super deliberate and very core part of his character, at least in how I read it – wouldn’t be nearly as fascinated with the story if it wasn’t.
And I don’t think it’s an accidental visual shorthand because of that repetition. I remember reading somewhere CM said that in S6’s TxL hotel sex scene they actually filmed two full sex scenes, one on the sofa and one in the bed – but in the end they only showed the last few seconds in the bed focused on the faces, as better articulating the purpose of that scene. I think they are very particular about how and what they show about Tommy having sex.
The particularity does add to this sense of overly-performative sex (EVERY sex scene feels performative and slightly contrived to me, even Tommy with Grace, even him using passionate sex with Grace in S3 to distract her XD, even him drunkenly/passionately sealing the ‘transaction’ with Lizzie in S5’s My Property scene) but I think they manage to stay on the side of the line that it feels like Tommy being consciously performative/contrived, rather than feeling like I can see the director’s hand. It’s the same sense when looking at Tommy’s various desks: yes his desks absolutely reek of being a contrived stage, but it’s *Tommy* being conscious about setting the stage, not the set designers/directors.
My reading / what I think the sex says about his character:
his ‘thinking mind’ constantly tries to frame sex as a transaction because he sees himself/his labour/his work/doing killings/offering sex – basically any act of his body as the fundamentality/essentiality of labour – as a unit he can trade for something else he wants. There’s some kind of less thought-out complex/trauma background thing here, where he believes that his worth is only what he can bring in and do for the family – labour, killing, smarts, sex, whatever. Mostly that’s his intelligence/schemes/business smarts, or his ability to push through risk/stress for high stake outcomes (stretching to do things they won’t out of fear), but sometimes that’s also his body (if combined with intelligence - trade your goods smartly, not stupidly, for advantage worth more than the momentary loss of bodily boundaries).
his ‘unthinking mind’ does actually want sex physically because it feels good. Physical release/oxytocin/endorphins etc? libido? I assume this, because otherwise they just wouldn’t bother showing him seeking out prostitutes; he’s not doing that for ego because he was satisfied in S1 that people thought he wasn’t having sex even though he was. But he is also sort of scared of sex because it leads to an intimacy that he can be used or hurt through it, hence why he defaults to prostitutes (S1, S2, S4 - or even the Zelda fling/no possible relationship) when he’s most wounded. Could theorise this is due to actual sexual abuse, but seems more like it’s because he hurts so deeply every time he’s connected deeply with someone – he loved Greta and was broken when she died, he loved Grace and was broken when she died - so, this supports his transactional approach because transactions are conditional, negotiated up front, well defined and ‘safe,’ they can’t get intimate or personal. He can use the transactional approach to justify himself seeking sex, while at the same time netting him something which feels good.
But whatever’s in the middle of the above two, is actually madly desperate for personal connection and intimacy. Despite him trying to apply sex transactionally or as a feel-good-only thing, he falls into some kind of intimacy and connection with the people he has transactional sex with, so frequently it’s a definite pattern. (I could write absolute buckets about May right here)
Even when he tries to avoid intimacy/connection – prostitution - returning from war, he sticks with one prostitute and has a very intimate connection with her? All right that's not typical?? And between S3 and S4 when the family’s shunning him, instead of just being promiscuous and anonymous, instead he has a relatively small rotation of regular prostitutes, knowing their names by preference to anonymity? Even the scene we see where he insists on someone new that he doesn’t know, this sparks from Lizzie pushing him about family/intimacy/connection. I read that almost as a “look at me Lizzie I don’t NEED connection stop pushing me” in front of her to try to make a point (to her, who used to be his intimate sexual connection, in a way that hurts her too to put her in her place? to himself?), immediately followed by him handing Lizzie cash/emphasising transactional approaches.  And this is then followed by that absolutely hysterical fail of a sex scene with the ‘someone new’ prostitute, which I swear is filmed to show Tommy did not, in fact, have any sex, or if he did, it was so lame they didn’t even muss the bed.
Even S6 and the prostitute in America, it’s fascinating they make the effort of showing that having happened, but then focus so much on all the intimacy/connection in the phone call with Lizzie/kids. He needs sex but he's hungry for connection and made vulnerable by intimacy.
(And I could go on about the number of ‘woman on top’ scenes and why that particular position, or specifically the filming/dialogue with May which is one of the more fascinatingly filmed and verbalised transactional relationships because of her class, or why I think Lizzie, the actual prostitute, has the least amount of flesh/nudity showing at all from all his women while he's often MORE naked/exposed in their scenes -- I’ve only been able to watch properly the once through, but had so many thoughts on how they dealt with the framing/camerawork.)
But all up, it feels like it’s trying to show him as a character who performs sex to get something out of it that’s not sex (transaction/treats self as a fundamental labour unit of exchange), but still needing/wanting/enjoying sex (because otherwise why would he pay for prostitutes/why even put sex on the negotiating table men don't do this??), but also constantly he cannot shut down this tendency/urge of his to more softly want/need personal connection almost more than the sex.
It’s just not a common way to portray a guy ruthlessly heading a gang, and that’s why I think it’s so deliberate. They take the expected image of how a guy heading a gang would approach sex (prostitutes, seduction, sexual prowess etc) but it feels like they’ve turned that expected image/action well on its head (cares for prostitute/s, suffers the Mosley-threat and Diana-rape, sexual prowess is mostly in service of women, attempts to depersonalise himself to a unit of trade), and then they use camerawork and the pre-post conversations to show this intriguing drive for intimacy instead of sex.
I hope that’s answered the question? It’s tricky; some of these thoughts more suited to a conversation/branching dialogue than a single post or I get repetitive XD
Tangentially, there’s more thoughts too on how they weave prostitution through as a theme, or the way he’s often in conflict between those motivators of ‘transaction/physical/intimacy’ -- he trips himself up; he gets hurt by trying to lean into one or two of those, and forgetting the other/s, and can’t really ever get them in balance.

Hi! I am fiendish-appreciation (not my main account, an therefore, cant send asks from it, which kind of sucks😒) Look, I know I said that I liked your oneshot about saving Raphael from Cania, but I need to go into detail! 😤
first than all, it needs to be said, Korilla is underrated as hell (this beautiful sexy warlock is one of the many npcs that should be romanceable, and I will not hear otherwise😭) and is the best employee ever, maybe too good, but since I love Raphael so much, I am ok with it( but still!🤣) but what I am trying to say is, my poor baby girl really pulled through for Raphael with what she thought would be her last breaths didn’t she?😢
“Who’s the damsel in distress?”  Astarion asked"
I need to ask, is this a reference to what he said when Volo needed rescuing? "This damsel may be middle-aged, but let's get him out of distress." because if so, it applies perfectly here too, and I love it🤣
"A direct confrontation with the archdevil himself was out of the question."
a smart decision, common sense, has clearly been applied here (...having said that, ever since learning about Raphael's fate should he die, I have been dying to beat Mephistopheles into HIS final death... but I like the idea of a Tav who has gotten more powerful going as support for Raphael, so that HE can kill his dad and eat him (for the sake of poetic justice) even more!🥰)
Tav, my dear oblivious fool, I think that when you decide to go to the hells, more specifically, breaking into an archdevil's vault, all to rescue someone, that at this point is more of a hindrance than a help...  you should not be THAT surprised that your emotion is "unexplainable relief" that they are ok🤣 (idiots to lovers)
Raphael really thought it was the end, didn’t he? I can't imagine how surprised and confused he must have been, to see the person, that he, is totally not crushing on, coming to save him, when it would only be an "inconvenient waste of time" (by devil standards, since, what use is he to Tav now???), time that could be better spent by chasing after those who DO have the orphic hammer, plus, now that Raphael is out of the equation, tav would be getting to keep the crown for themselves, so... why would they save him???🥺😭
"his tail moving to and fro in agitation"
his tail is moving 🥺 (I just have a weakness for when Tieflings, Dragonborns and truly, any race who has a tail, moves it in a show of emotion🥹)
““It’s a magical seal.”  Raphael breathed, his voice low yet sharp with anger born of desperation. “Now’s not the time to play the fool.””
Did I misunderstood severely, or he was suggesting for Tav to leave him and save themselves???😭
“You owe me a favor. A big one. I don’t know yet what I will ask of you, but you will deliver. Understood?”
funnily, I think Tav did the poor thing a favor, by bringing a transaction, a language he understands, to the table, now it kinda makes more sense! 😢
(I am also wondering what will your Tav ask Raphael IF they were even planning of asking him something in the first place 🤭 (I know what MY Tav would ask of Raphael if they were in this situation and were planning to collect, and its honestly such an hilariously easy thing for Raphael to do, since he has many underlings but it's something that would be life changing for my poor Tav XD
Raphael: really??? This is the price of my life???😡
Tav: no??? This is the price of mine!!!😠😤
Long story short, she would ask Raphael to protect IN GOOD FAITH the life of her 8 intelligence chaotic stupid, bard of a brother, so that he may die peacefully of old age, and she be free of the constant stress of worrying for his safety) But other things I can imagine a Tav could ask “let's spend time together just for the sake of spending time together” “let's go on a date" “marry me” “Make me your consort” 😳🤭)
I love how Raphael just shoos away the rest of the poor party none too gently 🤣 (how ungrateful to Astarion, the savior of middle-aged damsels in distress!😒) and brings Tav back to his house “away with you losers! I have to talk to someone who actually matters!”😤
“Korilla asked me to.  It was her dying wish.” sure, it was her last wish before she died, true... but she is still very much alive, isn't she? I like the evasion there😏 (...although maybe Tav really does think Korilla is dead here, they may not have the knowledge that Korilla is fine from the notes of the author, if so, ouch😢)
still! Tav really should tell Raphael that Korilla is still alive (if they are aware ofc), I am pretty sure she is the closest thing he has for a friend, and I don't believe for one moment that he is not, at the very least "annoyed" if that's what we wanna call it, that Korilla, who is his best employee, who he has a good enough rapport with to make friendly wagers, who, as this event shows, is loyal beyond the use they have for each other, used her last breaths of life to try to get help to save him, and save him she did (Korilla and Raphael are a beloved brotp for me😌)
like, Tav is not the only one with a paltry excuse to save him, and now Raphael will have to deal with being genuinely liked by more than one person, I can't imagine what the poor bastard is thinking, he is aware of it logically, since the excuses don't hold water, but emotionally? I don't think he can quite process it (i would kill for his pov during this whole situation😩)
"In an unexpected move, Raphael strode to you and took your hand, placing a kiss to your knuckles. His breath hot on your still chilled skin. “You may even assist me, if you so desire.”  He straightened.
That was as close to a “thank you” as you were going to get.""
I- I think that expresses how he feels quite well, then again, it could be just me😳
long story short: i loved this
Just. The fact you wrote essentially an analysis on that oneshot I made is...beyond my scope of current comprehension, friend.
I am so glad you like it and grateful you decided to share your thoughts with me and for sharing insight on your own Tav's backstory! I love all of it!
Oh, and I genuinely didn't know about Astarion's in-game "damsel in distress" line, haha, it just struck me as absolutely something he would say!
Also cheers to Korilla, she is a cool cat.

can you explain why you think there’s a power imbalance in brendon’s friendship with mike viola? ik mike is a little older, but they’re both adults and there seems to be nothing concerning about their friendship dynamic at all. not trying to start anything, just curious!
Oh mostly because Brendon admires him! So it’d be easier for Mike to get Brendon’s labor/talents without much question because B doesn’t want to squander an opportunity with him. Which in moderation is totally fine (all relationships are transactional to a degree. For example; my friend is driving me to a movie. I’m paying for her ticket. Totally fine 😂 I don’t have a car; she doesn’t have 8 dollars to spend on non-necessities. We both benefit), but over time can add up (like, if we went to the movies every week, I may eventually say Hey! The price of these tickets is not equivalent to gas! Or she may say Hey! You always pick seats I don’t like!, etc. Seemingly little things that can accumulate.) Also, Mike is less of a household name, so he can leverage Brendon’s fame for money/attention from the general public, but Brendon wouldn’t be able to get that from Mike. Not that he’d want to obviously, but it is another one-sided factor. While Brendon did/does “use” Mike for help with songwriting, that doesn’t materially benefit him because he can and has written successful (more successful) albums without a tremendous amount of Mike’s help. Essentially, Mike’s just there for funsies. Furthermore, Mike gets songwriting credit and possibly financial compensation from that, so if anything, he’s the one benefiting. But really I don’t think there’s anything massively unethical happening at all. Basically, Brendon loves music and is happy to help Mike with his music, but I’m sure- maybe subconsciously- Mike knows his public relationship with Brendon brings him slightly more attention. And in some ways, he contributes to it unnecessarily. (Again, the massive insinuation Brendon would be playing one of his shows. He knew people would know it was Brendon. He didn’t have to say Mike Viola and friends ;)))) but he did. Maybe not intentionally benefitting but had he been more conscientious, he would’ve protected B better if that was really his goal.)
It’s basically the equivalent of when your friend or partner has another friend that you don’t really like. Like, I don’t necessarily want them to stop seeing each other and it’s none of my business, but when I’m feeling petty, I’ll let my grievances be known.
It’s really small things that I wouldn’t flinch at on their own, but after Brendon’s been fucked over at basically every turn (as recently as some of his fucking Twitch friends), it’s enough to make me wary. But I cannot stress enough how much it’s really not a big deal at all. And also it’s worth noting I hate men in general so there’s 25% chance I’d find something to dislike about him

Company Insights — Week 3-4
The key insights I gained from our interview with Frelly Sacabin for Transfer It were all about the importance of creating a positive, supportive work environment. She explained that the company not only helped her build the skills needed to meet business goals, but also treat employees with respect, offer benefits and foster a non-toxic culture. This reminded me that an indicator of a good business is when it always takes care of their employees. That care would also boost morale and reflect in how they serve their customers. Frelly also mentioned that teamwork and open communication is key to keeping everything running smoothly. Employees should get along and be aligned to achieve success. For challenges, she talked about handling customer complaints and difficult requests. This reminds me that even in tough situations, empathy and having a mindset that allows you to focus and find solutions can make a big difference.
In the second interview with an anonymous employee for Papelemento, I was inspired by her journey of stepping outside her comfort zone as a fresh graduate in Education to explore a completely different career path. It was admirable seeing someone so willing to expand their horizons and not being afraid to try something new. Hearing her describe how adapting to these high-pressure situations helped her grow more attentive to detail made me realize how important it is to embrace challenges as good opportunities for personal as well as professional growth. When she mentioned the importance of critical thinking and staying calm under pressure, I was reminded that success in any role requires not just technical skills, but also having the mental capacity to deal with stress. Similar to the other companies we interviewed, I also heard how vital customer feedback is for a business to thrive. This interview made me think about how I would handle similar challenges and the importance of adaptability and patience in any career path.
After interviewing Cherry Mae Sab, a saleslady at Mugna Leather Arts, I gained insights into the challenges and growth that come with her role. She shared how difficult it was at first to learn engraving and memorize all the products, but her ability to adapt to different work environments helped her grow. It made me realize that it’s normal to not know everything right away when one starts a new job. It’s normal to take the time and learn from others in order to be better at what you do. Despite facing daily challenges, like rude clients, Cherry’s professionalism and commitment to quality have helped her succeed in her job. This made me think that when you work, especially in customer service, having unpleasant customers is inevitable. Which is why it’s important to have thick skin and not take things too personally when these types of customers come your way. Sometimes people can be rude or unreasonable, but staying professional and not letting it get to you is key to handling those situations.
After the interview with Crisanta Sajulga from the Mustela company, I noted her strong focus on improving her customer service skills and the responsibility she was trusted with early on, which shows her dedication. Almost all of her answers were said with the customers in mind. Same with the other interviewees, she said good customer service is key to satisfying their needs, and pointed out that Mustela’s products remain popular because of their effectiveness. However, she also shared the challenges she faces in the business, particularly the pressure of making sales and ensuring accuracy with transactions, such as handling cash and giving change. This made me realize that you have a lot of things to juggle and keep in mind, since things like carefully balancing excellent customer service with attention to detail is key to maintaining operations and avoiding expensive mistakes.
Lastly, from our interview with Rikkia Eve Baguio from Dal Arms, I gained new valuable insight into the importance of navigating regulatory hurdles and other challenges in the firearms industry. For me, I have never heard much about this industry, which is why this was one of the interviews that definitely stood out to me the most so far. Another key takeaway that she advised was how important it is to be genuinely interested and confident in the business you pursue. What I also learned was the impact of gun bans, which significantly reduce sales especially during the holidays and elections. And their strategy to combat this made me understand that success in a business isn't just about offering a great product. You need to be flexible and have a well-thought-out strategy to handle these unpredictable challenges while earning money and keeping customers happy.

How do I know if someone received my Cash App Payment?
If you've sent a payment using Cash App, you can check whether the recipient has received it or not by following these steps:
Tumblr media
Open the Cash App on your mobile device.
Tap the clock icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen to view your transaction history.
Find the payment you sent and check its status.
If the payment shows as "Cash app payment pending" it means that the transaction is still being processed, and the recipient hasn't received the money yet.
If the payment shows as "completed," it means that the recipient has received the money.
You can also choose to receive notifications from the Cash App whenever a payment is sent or received, which can help you keep track of your transactions. Additionally, if the recipient contacts you to confirm that they received the payment, you can be certain that the transaction was successful.
Why is my cash app payment pending?
Having to deal with pending payments on Cash App can be quite stressful and inconvenient. When making a payment on the Cash App, it is expected that the money will be transferred almost instantly, but in some cases the payment can remain in a “pending” state. Since the pending status of a Cash App payment affects your finances, it is important to understand what could be causing the issue and how you can try to fix it.
The most common issue causing payments on Cash App to remain in a pending status is an insufficient funds balance. Cash App payments are not processed when the balance of the sending account is too low to cover the cost of the payment, so the payment remains in a pending state until the payment is funded. To prevent this from happening, it is important to make sure that you have adequate funds in the sending account before attempting to make the payment.
Technical issues, such as high traffic or server outages, can also cause payments to remain in a pending status. If Cash App is unable to connect to its server, it may take longer than usual to process payments. High traffic can also cause delays as Cash App must process payments in the order they are received. If these technical issues are causing a Cash App payment to remain in a pending status, closing and restarting the app, or accessing Cash App’s website, will often fix the problem.
Finally, different banks can have different processing times for Cash App payments. The speed at which the payment is processed depends on the receiving bank and the availability of their funds. While most banks have quick processing times, there can be delays from time to time so it is important to be patient when dealing with Bank Transfers.
In summary, payments on Cash App can remain in a pending status for a variety of different reasons, including insufficient funds, technical issues, and the receiving bank’s processing times. To avoid the inconvenience of pending payments and make sure your Cash App transactions are successful, it is important to properly check and double-check your payment details, as well as make sure that the sending account has sufficient funds before attempting to make the payment. By following these steps you will be able to ensure that your Cash App payments are sent and received in a timely manner.

⚠️ WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BRAZIL: a thread ⚠️
am i going insane or more of the world should care about a country generating covid variants that could spread internationally? right
spoiler alert: covid is killing us. badly. no, it's not this bad everywhere. yes, you should care.
our government is DELIBERATELY and CLEARLY trying to kill us, not only not doing anything but actually trying to stop any help from getting here, with censorship to go with it.
PLEASE, READ RHIS THREAD
it's NOT this bad everywhere:
"No other nation that experienced such a major outbreak is still grappling with record-setting death tolls and a health care system on the brink of collapse."
yes, you SHOULD care:
"Preliminary studies suggest that the variant that swept through the city of Manaus is not only more contagious, but it also appears able to infect some people who have already recovered from other versions of the virus."
you REALLY should care:
"And the variant has slipped Brazil’s borders, showing up in two dozen other countries and in small numbers in the United States."
1 in every 4 covid deaths WORLDWIDE is happening in brazil, INTERNATIONAL MEDIA ISN'T TALKING ABOUT THIS ENOUGH.
our president?
- calling it "a little flu"
- literally making trying to legally stop states from lockdown
- blocked any attempts to get vaccines here for months
- recommended meds with no scientific proof which caused SEVERAL other deaths for overuse of improper meds
he refuses to wear a mask in public but it's not just the things he isn't doing, it's the deliberate steps he takes to make sure ANYONE who tries to do ANYTHING to help (even the US!!!!!!!! OFFERING US VACCINES FOR MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!) is shut down.
we have no oxygen. no ICU beds. no proper masks. basic food is so expensive here the country is falling back to hunger, so whoever is not dying from covid is dying out of starvation or due to the complete and utter collapse of our healthcare system.
if you read the articles i post here you will know brazil has a RECORD of being GREAT in this type of scenario & getting vaccines to everyone fast as fuck.
this is a DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO KILL US, i couldn't possibly stress that enough.
who is it killing? take a guess.
"The study also found that Black Brazilians were likelier to lose their jobs or face pay cuts than white people during the pandemic. The death rate in poorer cities has been substantially higher than in rich ones."
BY JANUARY OF THIS YEAR the ny times was reporting "The country has not yet approved any of the vaccines on the market."
NOT EVEN APPROVED. ANY. OF THE VACCINES.
this isn't a tragedy, this is our government's plan.
again, why are people not helping? i have no clue.
"On Friday, officials at the World Health Organization called the surge of cases in Brazil deeply troubling and warned that it could wreak havoc well beyond the country’s borders."
censorship? oh yeah, the president's son is trying to silence a guy who made a TWEET calling the president out. & that was only news not a shady unexplainable death bc the guy is famous and rich in the first place.
this is not the only threat he has made, btw. during his CAMPAIGN he said he'd kill people who opposed his government. that is how low we are.
10,3MI brazilians might starve to death and things are only getting worse:
have i proven my point? cuz honestly there is no lack of evidence, but i can go graphic if you need to hear what happens when a patient needs oxygen or an ambulance and our hospitals can't provide it.
no? yeah. better not.
"ok but what can we do"
TALK. ABOUT. THIS.
WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS.
WHY IS THIS NOT EVERYWHERE.
WHY IS NOBODY HELPING.
i literally feel crazy, as if this is only happening in my head. every brazilian i know is desperate and nobody cares.
"ok but what else"
we need donations, badly. money for food, masks, literally all supplies. if you are a single person guess what THERE ARE NO ORGANISED WAY TO HELP YET you literally need to find a brazilian or learn portuguese to be able to get to local donations centres.
have i mentioned nobody cares? how is a country going through this massive of a crisis with a government trying to kill and silence us yet there people barely heard about this???? given IT IS CREATING DEADLY VARIANTS THAT ARE SPREADING BEYOND BORDERS
oh my god i feel insane
special call-out for portugal & also the US for fucking us up historically
https://t.co/JQ9LBkfSIV
per request i will make an english speaking video about brazil's covid situation to be posted @ youtube.com/c/AndressaBuss later this week
🌟DONATIONS LINKS🌟
update: if you want to place a donation to @CUFA_Brasil or @maesdafavela i will offer free portuguese-english translations to help with the process.
email me @ [email protected] (i can't keep up with DMs here)
You can also try to finda artists or writers or professionals in brazil and hire them! or tip them a kofi! Or simply search for "brazil" in the search and help out by sending one dollar or two in kofi or gofundmes that will also help brazilians staying safe
i will keep linking more as i find it. donation centre to get basic food to people who need it: https://t.co/gFZdskBE6G
Update: finally managed to get an extensive list of options for donations after over 24hrs trying, from jun last year so some campaigns have ended but there's still plenty to choose from
(again: im available for free translations & help in your donation process if you need it)
just assisted in a R$740 donation process to the above donation centre & i am working on putting together a list of various options for donations as well as brazilian artists who are making emergency commissions :)
im mostly trying to assist people place the donations themselves & when i have to place the donation i offer vast proof (of whatever kind you need) of each transaction
im not a random account with no face behind it, im a broke history teacher who has covid, im trying to help

I've been trying for a while now to articulate what exactly bothers me about S2 and why I'm not motivated to write anything based on it, and someone put it into words in a Discord today.
I've also seen posts about Burn Butcher Burn again, and I have thoughts about that, too.
The thing about S2 that bugs me the most is this: the first half of Jaskier's arc is extremely serious and has a lot of emotional depth. He has a very touching heart to heart with Yennefer, there is the torture, and Joey gets to act.
Then Geralt shows up.
The first confrontation is, again, very emotional. And then it all goes downhill. Nobody ever mentions his injuries - those fingers must be blistered, there's possibly exposed flesh. Have none of the writers ever touched a hot stovetop or a clothes iron? Burns take forever to heal and hurt like hell.
From that point on, Jaskier is once more reduced to (badly written) comic relief and running gag. His trauma is never addressed in any fashion by anyone, he is constantly drinking and obviously left to himself at KM, and his comedic moments felt forced and shoehorned in. He does nothing at all of consequence. Sure, Geralt tells him to take Ciri to KM (which does show trust I suppose), but is he actually needed? I would say no. The stone wasn't needed, he doesn't interact with anyone except Lambert who basically tells him to go fuck himself, and that's it.
I have very complicated feelings about their reunion. Jaskier is obviously still hurt but he is immediately willing to join Geralt again. Sure, he makes a production of it, but there's never any real hesitation. But I don't know if I believe that Geralt understands just how badly he has hurt Jaskier with his accusations. His apology felt very flat to me. I didn't expect him to grovel, as some people have called it, but an "I need you" (which never manifests in anything concrete and feels a bit like something Geralt says to justify having Jaskier back) and that "I'm sorry" from atop NewRoach felt dismissive to me.
I can understand Geralt blowing his top on the mountain. He was hurt and stressed and reeling from everything that had happened. But imo the way he spoke to Jaskier was deliberate. He took all of his own mistakes and blamed them on Jaskier. Was Jaskier the facilitator of these events? Yes. Did he hold a gun to Geralt's head and make him say the third wish/claim the LoS etc? He didn't, those were all choices Geralt made, and telling Jaskier that he never brought him anything but trouble was designed to hurt as much as possible.
Yes, Jaskier inserted himself into Geralt's life and he made a profit off of it - but so did Geralt, and nobody can tell me he couldn't have gotten rid of/avoided Jaskier - who was, let's remember, an 18yo nobody when they met - if he had truly wanted to.
If there was a transactional relationship between them, it definitely went both ways.
The show doesn't address any of this. Jaskier has a very public breakdown about everything, Geralt makes sad puppy eyes at him, and everything is superficially forgiven.
Which, I guess, brings me to the song.
There were definitely choices made here, and none of them were particularly good (except musically, because it is a good song). But I absolutely can see Jaskier writing and meaning this, in that first period of time after the mountain. He was deeply hurt, and let's face it, he is a horrible little man. He wished for someone to die for no apparent reason and for the Countess to love him, for fuck's sake. He's impulsive and vindictive. Something like Burn Butcher Burn is very in character in the heat of the moment, in my opinion. Geralt went for the throat, so he shall do the same.
However.
I think he regrets it. I'm not holding my breath for any sort of meaningful conversation about this in the future in the show, because the writers just aren't willing to give us that, but I would hope he'd explain himself to Geralt, if it ever came to that.
But I think that's where my and many book fans' especially interpretation differs so greatly. Book fans tend to look at Geralt through the lens of book!Geralt's view of himself and his relationship to Dandelion, but I think that is a hindrance here. The whole problem is that this is just not an adaptation, even if the showrunners call it that. It is, at best, based on, but in reality more inspired by. The relationship is so fundamentally different that to say "Dandelion would never" is meaningless.
Book!Geralt's relationship to others is, imo, in many respects defined by his insecurities and belief that he's somehow unworthy. Nx!Geralt doesn't, to me, appear to have those same issues. His relationship to Jaskier is never shown to be based on affection. It's implied that they're friends but we're not shown that they are. Every interaction they have is undercut by long suffering sighs from Geralt who seems to tolerate him despite not liking him all that much.
Fans filled in so much that the show just leaves out, because the show didn't give us any other option. If they're friends, Geralt's words were incredibly cruel. If they're not, Jaskier's reaction is over the top. Both can't be true.
I've seen a lot of people say "have you never had a fight with a friend before" to those defending Jaskier after S1, and personally I can say that, if a friend ever said something like that to me, even in state of heightened emotion, yeah, no, I wouldn't want to be friends any more.
I don't know. This is long-winded and rambly. I liked quite a bit about S2 and disliked even more of it. I'm not hopeful that any of the issues the writing had will be solved, or that the quality will get better. I'll just... stay over here and hope for the best without believing in it, I suppose.

Friends with Benefits
Tumblr media
Summary: You and Calum are friends with benefits, but what happens when one of you starts to want something more
Genre: Frat!Calum
Warnings: swearing, sexual themes
Word Count: ~900
“Same time tomorrow?” Calum asks as you clumsily climb out of his bed and search around the room for the panties you arrived in.
“Um,” As you reach under the bed, you feel the silk material in a crumbled heap. You pull it out only to realize that these are not the panties you wore here. In fact, they aren’t even yours. “I actually have plans.” You continued, throwing the panties away from you and wiping your hand on your still bare thigh.
“Plans?” Calum’s tone is doubtful, almost even mocking. But you’re too busy scowering the room for your panties to notice.
“Yep.” Deciding to abandon your search for your undergarments, you grab your pants off the foot of the bed and shimmy them on. “So, looks like you’re going old school tomorrow. Just you, yourself, and Miss Righty.”
The way you grin to yourself as you pull your shirt over your head annoys him. He hates for any one, especially just some girl he hooks up with, to feel that they’ve got anything over him.
“Bold of you to assume you’re the only girl I call when I need to get off.” He pushes, raising an eyebrow at you. Uninterestedly you roll your eyes at him.
“Not only,” you smirk to yourself, “but best.” He’s trying to best you, but you’re not like all the other insecure girls he messes around with. You know what you’ve got, and you know what it’s worth.
“Again,” it was Calum’s turn to smirk at you. “Bold assumption”. Your only response it to roll your eyes as you bend over to pull on your shoes.
“I mean, for the past three weeks you’ve called me, what,” You turn your eyes towards the ceiling and scrunch your face pretending to think. For added measure you use one finger to solve an imaginary equation in the air. “Oh that’s right, every night.”
You won’t back down. But Calum won’t either.
“Yea, and who do you think I’ve called every morning?” Calum smirks triumphantly. You say nothing as you grab your purse and head for the door.
“Good, then call one of them.” You say it and mean it. Just like it was for Calum, to you this arrangement was simply a business transaction. A mutual exchange of sexual favors. Nothing more.
“See ya.” You call over your shoulder as you finally walk out of the room. Leaving Calum naked and alone in his bed.
*****CALUM’S POV*****
Friday night. Exactly 22 hours since I last got off. I’m not OCD or anything. It’s just that over the years I’ve found that keeping a strict “booty-call” schedule made it easier to keep track of my endeavors. Not to mention it prevents the always awkward “two booty-calls running into each other” situation. If you’ve never experienced one chick leaving your room half naked, while another chick is walking in ready to smash, trust me – you don’t want to go there. However, it did make for some pretty hot hate-sex.
Not that the schedule really mattered much lately. There was really only one time to account for. (Y/N)’s time. Every night for the past couple weeks. 10 o’clock on the dot is her call time. Usually she won’t get here until about midnight, but that works out perfectly for me. The later it is the less likely she’ll be to try and hang out, or some shit, afterwards.
Throwing the weight of my body on the bed, I pull my phone out of my tight jean pocket and call her.
It’s not until she doesn’t answer that I remember about the bullshit “plans” she told me she had.  Whether they are real or not, they’ll just have to wait. Because right now, I need her. Well, my dick does anyway.
I call again. This time the phone rings twice and then goes straight to voicemail.
She sent me to voicemail.
This is probably all just some elaborate scheme to make me think she actually has better things to do than fuck me.
Two can play at that game
I toss my phone on the bed and head towards the bathroom. The sound of my phone vibrating on the bed makes me stop in my tracks. I smile to myself and eagerly make a move for the phone.
Eagerly? Why are you eager?
I blame it on my being horny. I can’t help the way my face falls with disappointment when it’s my friends contact name on my screen instead of hers.
Disappointment?
I must be really, really, horny.
“What?” I bark annoyed. It’s not actually him I’m bothered by, but he’s the one who’s available.
“Dude, where are you?” he’s yelling into the phone, and I can hear loud music blaring in the background.
“My room?” I don’t know what he wants, but if he doesn’t tell me soon this conversation is going to end.
“Oh, I figured you were at that Phi Delta party?”
“Well, I just told you I’m in my room.” I snap. “Why the hell would I be at some frat party?”
I’m far from the type. All those preppy douchebags. Running around with their gelled-hair, short shorts, and flip flops. What real man wears flip-flops other than to the beach? And even that is pushing it.
“Yea but-” the sound of his voice pulls me back to reality from my internal rant. “Your little fuck-buddy’s here so I figured-”
“Who?” I interrupt.
“Uh, you know that one chick. The one you rated best rack!”
“(Y/N)?!” I don’t know why but knowing that she was ignoring my calls, while she was probably running around with some douchey frat guy irritated me.
“Yea! Yea dude her! She looks-” Before he can even finish his sentence, I hang up the phone and grab my keys. I don’t know why I going to the party or what I’ll do when I get there, but right now all I can think about is (Y/N) laying in bed with a douche in flip-flops.
As I finally pull up in front of the huge trashy house, none of the irritation has left my body. Taking long strides, I make my way in the house and navigate through all the drunk teens determined to find (Y/N). I do a quick scan of the living room, the kitchen, the backyard, but she’s nowhere to be seen. With every room I check off the list, my fears of her being locked in one of those bedrooms upstairs with some guy grows.
Just as I’m about to storm up the stairs and kick in every door, I spot her walking through the front door, with a guy following close behind. The type of guy who looks like he wears flip flops. As I watch her grin from ear to ear, I can feel anger rumbling deep in my stomach. Suddenly the house feels hot. Too hot.
My eyes follow them into the kitchen. I count to 10, and I head towards the kitchen too.
“Wooow, hey.” I fake shocked to be running into (Y/N) here.
“Calum.” Her statement sounds more like a question as her eyes go wide.
“Plans huh?” My eyes shift to the tool standing too close to her. I mean come on its burning up in here. Definitely, too hot to be standing that close to someone.
“Yea. Uh Corey this is Calum, Calum this is my friend Corey.” Friend? Her friend Corey? And what I’m? Just Calum? What she should’ve said was ‘Douchebag this is the guy who fucks me better than anyone ever has be-‘
“Nice to meet you man.” Douchebag interrupts my perverse thoughts and reaches out to shake my hand. I don’t want to take it. Who knows where those fingers have been.
Hopefully not in her.
I choke on my own thoughts as my breathe gets caught in my throat. I burst into a fit of coughs and (Y/N) and Douchebag just stare at me like I just grew another head. Douchebag pushes his cup towards me and I take it. As I chug down the beer from his cup, I swear I can taste (Y/N)’s pussy on the rim.
His lips better have not gone anywhere near her.
I can’t stop the thoughts going through my head, or the places my fucked-up imagination keeps taking me, but I know it needs to stop.
I finish off Douchebag’s drink and hand the empty cup back to him. I can feel the alcohol immediately. My muscles ease ever so slightly and I’m starting to function like a normal human being again. I need to regain control of this situation.
“So,” I chose to not even address whatever the hell was going on with me a minute ago. “This is the hot date (Y/N) was all giddy about.” I challenge her.
“You told him this was a date?” Douchebag raises an eyebrow and turns his attention to (Y/N) who’s shooting me daggers with her eyes.
“Well I didn’t use those words exactly.” She says through gritted teeth.
“Damn this is embarrassing,” He continues. I smirk to myself and wait for the show to begin. “Because ... I’ve been telling everyone it was.”
Douche, and I can’t stress this enough, bag.
I can’t help but roll my eyes and scoff, which I play off as another cough.
“You Calum, should take care of that cough, and you Corey, follow me to the beer pong table.” I watch as she grabs his hand and pulls him back towards the living room.
I decide to stay in the kitchen and continue adding alcohol to my system. The liquor burns my throat but for the time being it stops the weird thoughts in my head and helps me think more clearly. I mean obviously I’m not jealous or anything because, why the hell would I be. He’s a douche yea, but not because he’s here with the chick I occasionally fuck. And obviously I’m not irritated with her just because she’s here with a douche. It’s just that I needed to get my dick wet and she ignored my call to be here with said douche. Like he’s somehow more important than me getting off.
I stumble back into the living room and find a spot on the couch. Of course from where I’m sitting I have the perfect view of the beer pong table, and therefore the perfect view and Miss Thing and her new boy toy.
I sit watching them as I down beer after beer. My eyes follow (Y/N) intently as she finally walks away from the table towards the kitchen again. Without thinking, my feet are carrying me to the kitchen right behind her.
“Are you like stalking me now Calum?” she spins on her heels noticing me trailing her.
“Fiesty.” I wink at her. She just rolls her eyes and continues over towards the punch bowl to refill her cup. “I just wanted to tell you how good you look tonight.” I lick my lips while allowing my eyes to rake up and down her body, paying particular attention to her breasts.
“Fuck off.” She rolls her eyes at me while shaking her head. She knows this is a game, and she’s fighting hard not to lose.
“Damn,” I place one hand on her neck tilting her head to the side. “You’re sexy when you’re mad.” I make a move to attach my lips to her neck and she lets me. And I know I’ve won. I suck at the sensitive skin and try to push my body closer to hers. “Let me take you upstairs.” I whisper into her neck.
“See I would,” she speaks but doesn’t move away from me. “But, I have a hot date to get back to.” She finally pulls away from me. “I’m just so giddy about it.” She’s mocking me. She smirks as she brushes past me leaving me and my bulge alone in the kitchen.
One hour, and too many shots later I’m still here. At this stupid frat house with these stupid people. I could’ve just gone home, but something keeps me here. I think it’s my obsession with beating (Y/N). Finally proving to her that she should’ve been in my bed with me tonight. Not here with what’s his face. When the first bit of alcohol entered my system, it helped keep my thoughts from running wild. Now that it’s pulsing through my veins as thick as my blood, the thoughts have returned.
I sit on the stairs, watching as (Y/N) grinds her perfect ass against Corbin, or whatever the hell his name was. It makes me sick. He slides his hands down her hips. He could never navigate her body as well as I do – even if she drew him a map. I’m the one that knows all the right places to touch her. I’m the one who knows all the right buttons to push. My name is the name she calls out while I pound into her.
The alcohol is mixing with my lust and my anger and it’s pushing me.
Douchebag spins (Y/N) around and wraps his hands in her hair.
The way that I do.
He tries to lean in and kiss her, but just before his lips meet hers, I’m pushing him off of her. My mind is confused but my fist are determined. I tackle him to the ground and start beating the shit out of him.
“Calum! CALUM GET OFF OF HIM!” (Y/N)’s voice pulls me off of him when no one else has been able to. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I don’t know how to answer her, because truthfully, I don’t know what I’m doing. I stand there glancing around at all the faces of the small crowd that had formed around us.
“He-You-” I was struggling to find a way to blame them for this. She stands there impatiently waiting for me to speak. Her angered expressions triggers something in me. She thinks she can stand here and face off against me. What does she think? She can intimidate me or something?
“You’re the one who should’ve answered my call!” I bite back at her. “Then I wouldn’t have had to come to this stupid ass party in the first place!”
“Calum get over yourself!” Why can’t she just let me win. Why does she have to be so damn stubborn? My body burns with rage and the faces of all these staring people aren’t making things any better.
“What the hell are you all looking at?!” I yell at the nosy ass bystanders. I probably look like a mad man. Wild hair, sweating, with knuckles busted and bleeding. I look scary enough for the crowd to scurry away in all directions turning their attention to something else.
(Y/N), along with the crowd, turns her back on me.
“Don’t,” I grab her arm and spin her back around to face me. “Turn your back on me!”
“Fuck! Off!” She emphasizes each word never letting any of the anger simmer. She jerks her arm away from me and turns her back on me again. I want to say whatever I need to to keep her from walking away from me. And of all the things I could, and probably should say, the best I can do is:
“That guy isn’t right for you!” The words taste foreign on my lips. I’ve never been one to look of for what was “right” for someone. Especially not some girl. The second the words leave my mouth I want to shove them back down my throat.
Now she’ll think she got me.
Now she’ll think she’s won.
“Right for me? Christ Calum it’s a date, not a fucking proposal!” She’s pissed, but at least she stayed. (Y/N) marches up to get in my face. She’s not done with me yet. “And what the hell do you know about right for me?! We fuck on occasion but that doesn’t mean you KNOW ME!”
She turns around and storms off. This time I let her go.
As I watch her walk away from me, I get this feeling. A feeling in the pit of my stomach. A sinking feeling.
Don’t leave me.
The thought scares me. I’ve never wanted someone to stay before, nor did I ever want to want someone to stay. But as the possibility of her staying faded -- leaving me alone -- I realized how desperately I wanted it. How desperately I needed it. Needed her.
This wasn’t a game. It never was. But as she turned her back on me, I couldn’t help but feel like I had just lost.

Hi do you mind doing like a breakdown analysis or just a general summary of what cruel summer’s about? I’ve been able to price together bits and pieces from your blog but could really use some help understanding the overall storyline
Sure! It started off as a general summary but I realised it would be easier if I went through line-by-line instead.
-
Fever dream high in the quiet of the night
You know that I caught it
She’s setting the scene here – it’s the middle of the night and she’s experiencing some kind of intense feeling that makes everything seem like a fever dream. Is it an emotional high because she’s so happy or maybe a drug trip or some kind of ~other high? There’s no clear cut answer but she says the other person ~knows she’s feeling this way, so make that of what you will.
Bad, bad boy, shiny toy with a price
By referring to him as a toy, she’s establishing that this is a no-strings attached, almost transactional situationship. It’s similar to “toying with them older guys / just playthings for me to use” – a line that’s heavily influenced by the public’s perception of her, so she’s saying that a) it’s set around the same timeframe, ergo 2016, and b) once she gets him out of her system, she’ll ditch and move on just like all those times before.
You know that I bought it
He’s well aware that they’re ~friends and this isn’t a defined relationship. Maybe it was something they agreed on, or maybe it’s an unspoken understanding, we don’t know.
Killing me slow, out the window
I'm always waiting for you to be waiting below
This actually reminds me of Tangled, like the idea of some sheltered princess falling for a normie who shows her a whole new world, and ultimately deciding to leave her life in the tower behind and run away with him? I could be reading into things too much but it’s a fun parallel for sure.
Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes
This is about her thought process: one part of her is deciding to take a gamble on the relationship – she might get hurt later, or the world might find out she’s seeing yet another guy and burn her alive for it, but she figures the risks are worth it. But at the same time, she’s like “here we go again 🙄” and doesn’t like that she’s so invested all of a sudden.
What doesn't kill me makes me want you more
The “what” in this line could be referring to a number of things. Maybe she’s talking about all the mess that’s happened this year and how shitty it’s been, and she’s using him as stress relief now. Maybe it’s about the lack of labels on their relationship and how that’s killing her, but makes her even more determined to get him to commit somehow. Or maybe it’s the general feeling of being so attracted to someone you think you might die.
And it's new, the shape of your body
It's blue, the feeling I've got
And it's ooh, whoa oh
It's a cruel summer
This is fairly straightforward, like they’ve only just started seeing each other so his body’s new and she feels blue because… 2016.
It's cool, that's what I tell 'em
No rules in breakable heaven
This is more of a general commentary on how she goes about a fwb situation, like it doesn’t have to be exclusive and pretty much anything goes. She also talks about the fragility of their relationship – they might be in heaven but it’s very much breakable and could end anytime.
Hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine
I'm not dying
I think this was meant in a literal sense, like they’re meeting up somewhere and he’s leaning against a vending machine and scrolling through his phone. She walks over and absolutely loses her mind over how hot he looks and realises that she’s down baaad. For a moment, in the midst of the ~cruel summer~, she’s not dying because she’s distracted by other priorities basically.
Alternatively, the snacks in a vending machine aren’t the healthiest way to deal with being hungry, and fucking your Words With Friends bestie isn’t exactly the healthiest coping strategy, but she really couldn’t care less.
We say that we'll just screw it up in these trying times
We're not trying
Both of them decided they didn’t want to get into a proper relationship, like she was fresh off two breakups and Going Through It, and his first movie was about to drop and he was going to head off to Asia for a promo tour soon. It doesn’t feel like the right time to define things, so why bother?
So cut the headlights, summer's a knife
I'm always waiting for you just to cut to the bone
The headlights being off represents them sneaking around and seeing each other in secret. She then says that although this summer’s already been so painful and shitty, he has the potential to hurt her the most by breaking things off or not reciprocating her feelings. And because she’s so cynical about love now, she’s expecting to get burned sooner or later.
And if I bleed, you'll be the last to know
If things do end badly, she’ll make sure she seems completely unaffected, because the last thing she wants is for him to think he broke her heart or whatever.
I'm drunk in the back of the car
And I cried like a baby coming home from the bar
This sounds super literal, and some people have connected it to the first verse in Cornelia Street, but I think this situation happens later on.
Said, "I'm fine," but it wasn't true
#TAYLOR: vulnerability 🤢 honesty 🤢 being upfront about how I feel 🤮
I don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you
It’s killing her that she can’t tell him about how she actually feels, because what if he’s not on the same page and she scares him off? So in order to keep their relationship going, she has to keep it in.
And I snuck in through the garden gate
Every night that summer just to seal my fate
Basically, it was always inevitable that she would fall for him, but their constant meet-ups intensified those feelings even more.
The garden gate mention seems to be a continuation of the fairytale imagery in “I’m always waiting for you to be waiting below” except now she’s the one reaching out to him. It’s also reminiscent of “I sneak out to the garden to see you” in Love Story, which is all about fairytale endings. But now on Cruel Summer, she’s subverting that imagery because real life relationships are complicated and raw and nuanced, and not at all like the idealised perfect love she used to write about.
Also, because this lyric is between them being in the back of the car and her screaming I love you, it separates the two situations so they’re not necessarily about the same thing.
And I scream, "For whatever it's worth
I love you, ain't that the worst thing you ever heard?"
He looks up, grinning like a devil
And finally, it all becomes too much and she’s no longer able to hide her feelings, because she suddenly screams that she loves him. He looks up from whatever he’s doing, and is like 😁😁😁 because it turns out he’s equally as whipped, and the rest is history!

per your post "every single one of the monsters is autistic and/or adhd" will you elaborate on that?, if you do i will love you forever (not that i wont if you dont do it)
oh boy i would love to!!! unironically nothing brings me more joy than writing long, convoluted character analysis posts
---
okay so i’ve written several posts before about why andrew is autistic. his moral code, the roundabout way he communicates, his body language, his stimulation-seeking behavior, his strict adherence to transactional deals, the emphasis on honesty, and a dozen other details. at this point i just take andrew being autistic as fact, not just an interpretation
h o w e v e r  i also hc that andrew is dyslexic, which is also a neurodiverse condition
- - -
similarly, i’ve seen more than one person interpret kevin as autistic, and i absolutely agree that it fits. not just the hyperfocus on exy but mostly the way he communicates. he’s very indirect, especially in his affection but very direct with his opinions. he tries to be helpful in a material way to the people he cares about, even if he comes off as negative. he wants the people he cares about to be safe and successful so he pushes them to work hard and reminds them in measurable ways how to stay healthy. he doesn’t factor in a lot of room for emotions, so instead he focuses on quantifiable things that he can improve. i personally act very similarly. approaching someone emotionally is hard for me, so when the people i care about have problems all i can think to do is try offering solutions, check up on their well-being, etc. practicality instead of conventional sentiment is extremely common with asd
- - -
so now let’s talk about neil. i had to think on this one for a WHILE but ultimately came to the conclusion that neil is adhd, probably hyperactive type.
like obviously neil is high energy. i would say he probably does the most exercise of anyone on the team. morning run, morning practice, afternoon practice, night practice with kevin and andrew, plus he doesn’t have a car so he runs to class (on a BIG ass campus), and goes for an extra run when he feels stressed. that’s... insane, honestly.
neil reminds me SO MUCH of this post that goes:
“Was just informed by my mom that I do in fact have ADHD and the reason I thought I didn’t was because ever since I was seven whenever I got super energetic my mom would have me go chop wood so now when I’m feeling The ADHD I go chop wood”
(phenomenal post) and that’s neil to a t. tell me this isn’t exactly how neil handles his problems and also exactly what mary would have had to do to keep her unmedicated and very energetic son focused on the task of staying alive
neil also definitely has that ADHD on/off switch with his interest. the obvious being exy which is like the definition of a hyperfixation, but you can see it in other things: the way he runs totally hot or totally cold with people, his complete disinterest in his schoolwork, the way he can’t seem to sit still long enough to follow movies. but then there’s also the hyperfocus. doing the same drill for hours on end. watching exy game after exy game. staring at andrew until time falls away
what’s more, neil on many occasions shows racing thoughts, both in an anxiety way (and anxiety often goes hand-and-hand with adhd) but also as a way to quickly and accurately take in details about people to build a character profile of them. this is what allows him to connect with the foxes, how he manages to get through andrew’s puzzles, and even how he knows what to say in order to knock riko down a peg. his brain just works so fast and it takes in a lot of very specific details and disparate information to make connections.
but also like,, neil has a HUGE problem with time blindness. like the instant he didn’t have his mother around to manage and direct him anymore he lost all sense of time. he stayed in Millport for a YEAR. and what did he keep telling himself during that time? basically “i really need to move on, but not just yet.” for a YEAR! then he gets to palmetto and he’s like “i’ll cut and run in a month or two” then he doesn’t “i’ll be gone by halloween” wrong again “i’ll leave by the raven’s game” nope. like,, the boy just has NO sense of time and he can’t seem to make himself DO anything outside of an externally enforced schedule. and even then,,, HE HAD 48 FUCKING DAYS TO FIGURE OUT SOMETHING TO DO TO NOT GET MURDERED! 48 WHOLE DAYS. he didn’t make a plan, he didn’t write down any letters with goodbyes, he didn’t GO TO THE FBI LIKE HE’D INTENDED TO THE WHOLE TIME! nah he just made out with andrew and when he finally got to zero he was just like “ah shit, that was fast. oh well guess i’ll die” and that’s time blindness, babey!
---
let’s move on to nicky.
now i think it would be really easy to say nicky is just adhd because he’s high energy and forgetful but tbh,, i don’t think that’s all of it. like if you really look at nicky’s character and especially at his problems, he has asd problems just as much as he has adhd problems.
so nicky is dual diagnosis asd and adhd. also nicky reminds me a lot of a girl i used to know who was autistic/adhd
so, adhd:
very generally speaking, ppl with adhd will struggle with sitting still, listening to and following instructions, planning/organization, following a schedule, and some social boundaries like “appropriate” times and topics of conversation
i would say you see hints of this with nicky. he’s definitely a rambunctious personality, constantly on the move, constantly stimulation seeking. he’s very tactile. he likes to dance, he likes to party, he complains about it but he’s an elite-level athlete. he’s also decidedly very chatty, and doesn’t seem to really pay attention to what he’s saying. he distracts himself and the people around him have to keep him on track. he has some trouble with boundaries. he’s a little all over the place. he’s almost a bit of an adhd stereotype
also one thing i find interesting is that when neil sees him in the library doing work neil is surprised to see he’s capable of that, especially bc when we see the upperclassmen doing work they generally do it in their dorms or on the bus and/or with other people around. that hyper-social nicky would be alone in a quiet place is weird. but this is like the most common tip for dealing with adhd. don’t do it in a familiar space. have a designated space and time to do work. limit distractions. just a lil detail
so now, asd:
in all honesty, most of nicky’s actual problems in the narrative could be viewed as stemming from asd symptoms. his number one issue being that he has a lot of trouble with nonverbal cues (and tbh, verbal ones too). the twins are mostly quiet. andrew especially (when he’s sober) communicates primarily nonverbally, and nicky seems to have a lot of trouble with this. despite knowing them for the longest on the team, nicky honestly seems to have the least insight into the way either of the twins actually thinks or processes things. he loves them, and he’s very forgiving of them, but he fundamentally doesn’t understand them.
the twins, andrew especially, put up a LOT of nonverbal boundaries, and nicky sort of inadvertently keeps trampling all over them. he’s touchy in a way they don’t like. he talks a lot about their personal lives to other people. he treats them like they’re joking when they’re serious. etc. and like,,, you kind of get the sense that the upperclassmen feel similarly about him. beyond the homophobia, beyond the fact that he’s loyal to andrew, the upperclassmen still treat him with this sense of,, bafflement, i suppose? it’s clear that they don’t really understand him and he doesn’t really understand them. although, nicky IS curious about the upperclassmen, while the upperclassmen are pretty dismissive of him. it reminds me of when my sweet, floppy dog tries to play with my cat. their body language is different; they’re each receiving different signals than they believe they’re sending out
only,, nicky loves people!! he likes being around them, he likes talking to them. he’s interested in their lives and stories, but it’s very clear that he can’t read between the lines on people. he has an incredibly hard time with people who expect their actions to speak for them, which is most people, but is especially his cousins.
actually this is very much also an issue that i have: things need to be spelled out for me. the way i deal with it is i ask a lot of questions. ‘how do you want me to react to this potential situation?’ ‘what are specific things that make you most comfortable?’ ‘please explain to me exactly how you feel and what has prompted those feelings?’ and i’m always communicating vice versa like that with other people. a lot of specifics in both questions and answers
and the interesting thing is, when i was skimming through the books reviewing dialogue styles for another ask, i noticed that, actually, nicky DOES do this. with neil and the upperclassmen, nicky asks a LOT of quick, clarifying questions. things that ask after tone, that ask after intent. it’s kinda sad that he does this for communicating with acquaintances, but with the twins, the people he’s closest to, he makes a lot more assumptions. and i’m really proud of nicky for having this coping skill, because i can’t imagine it’s something he grew up doing. there’s no way he was raised in an environment that fostered this kind of open communication so it must have been something he learned about much later, probably in germany with the kloses, which would also explain why he’s a lil imperfect about it
---
now last but not least, aaron
this is another one i had to think through for a long time before it felt like it fit
much like how i felt that it would be easy to read nicky as simply adhd rather than also asd, i think it would be easy to say aaron is autistic simply because he is quieter, less rambunctious. however, i actually think he’s adhd, likely primarily inattentive type
in all honesty, aaron’s #1 character trait for the first two books is basically that he’s disconnected. detached. separated both from his family and his team. not in the same forcefully apathetic way that andrew is, more,, spaced out. he’s just kind,, there. not really paying attention to what’s going on, tuning in every once in a while only if something really catches his eye/ear then tuning right back out again. just sits in his corner and plays on his phone. and the thing is, from the moments when he does tune in, you can tell that he actually does care. he backs nicky when seth insults him in tfc, and we know he cares deeply about andrew even if he’s become disillusioned with their fraught relationship. he even hangs with his family, doesn’t seem to really try and slip away to other friends besides katelyn, he’s fine spending his leisure time with the monsters. so it’s not totally apathy, he’s just,,, tuned out most of the time
and, yea, that sounds like adhd. it’s not the type that most people are familiar with, and for a lot of people this causes it to slip under the radar. it can make it hard to get help or a dx because it doesn’t fit with how adhd “should” look or how someone “should” act, but difficulty focusing your thoughts and staying in tune with the current moment is absolutely part of adhd
addiction is also a huge problem for people with adhd. a lot of stimulants affect people with adhd very differently than neurotypicals, especially in small doses, and an adhd kid who’s struggled their whole lives with the disorder might try speed or god-forbid meth or fuck even coffee and suddenly find that things are a lot easier for them. they start to self-medicate, they don’t actually know what they’re doing, and then they’re addicted, and everything spirals out of control. we don’t know too many details about aaron’s addiction other than that his mother enabled him, but wouldn’t this fit? it’s also an explanation for aaron still taking drugs at eden’s, given that cracker dust seems to be a mild amphetamine. (aaron talk to betsy about the neurocog and get an actual prescription please)
(total throw away but aaron plays videogames and videogames are like,, adhd culture)

Damn Him
Hi, this is average af but I needed to post something. You’ll probably be disappointed lmao. Anyway, enjoy some Dick Grayson content!
More on my masterlist, pinned as a top post!
Pairing: Dick Grayson x Reader
Word count: 4798
Warnings: None
Summary: Dick Grayson never seems to say the right thing around you, and it’s not quite for the reason you initially thought
You looked up from your book when your cellphone vibrated on your desk beside you. You were in the midst of studying for your last exam of the semester, so you had your phone on a strict do not disturb schedule, which meant it remained on 24/7. Your notifications were blocked for any social media, text or calls you might receive, well, except for your one emergency contact: Bruce Wayne. He knew he was supposed to contact you only if he had no other choice but ask for your help, and never had he even used that card ever since you knew him. Reluctantly, you put down you book and marker to switch them for your phone. Turning on the screen, you ignored the various hidden notifications, focusing only on the single line that stared back at you.
Call me when you can - B.
Sighing, you unlocked your phone and pressed the contact name, then the phone icon next to it. It rang twice before Bruce picked up.
"(Y/N), how are you?"
"A bit stressed out, but it could be worse" You replied truthfully. "What's up?"
"I hope you know I wouldn't do this if I had any other solution" He began. "But I need your help on a recon mission, almost all my effective got busted last night"
"Oh my, are they okay?" You frowned with concern, even if he couldn't see you.
"Yes, don't worry" He said, "I'll explain in person, that is if you agree to come. I'd understand if you refused, though"
You rubbed the bridge of your nose and closed your eyes for a second. You owed a lot to Bruce, and since it was a simple recon stakeout, you could take one or two nights off to help him out. You were already ahead of schedule in your studying and confident in your knowledge of the material.
"Yeah, sure, I'll be there" You finally answered. "What time do you want me over?"
"As soon as you can"
"Aight, see ya"
You hung up the phone and put it back on your desk, observing it for a second. It had been gifted to you by Bruce after you began going on missions more regularly with the batlings, he said that way he knew for sure all communications would be secure and sheltered from hacking or government surveillance. You had to admit, having an encrypted phone was pretty neat, as it ran entirely on Wayne Enterprises servers and networks. The simple thought of not having to suffer through youtube ads was satisfactory enough on its own to justify the need for it, even if you didn't join missions as much as you used to.
You finally stood up and went to change from your yoga pants and loose tank top to black jeans and a sweater, then jumped in your car and drove to the manor. You punched in your code at the gate and took the right to the garages, where you entered a second code to open the doors. Your car was several notches under those parked there, but you had to have something less flashy as not to attract too much attention. Still, it was more than a majority of college students even had. You had to thank Bruce for that too. He wasn't your adopted father per say, since he found you a few days before your eighteenth birthday, but he still acted like a guardian and mentor for you.
You jogged down to the batcave, where you instantly spotted a chatty blonde sprawled in a seat, making wild gesture. She sprung up straight at the sound of you coming in and her face split in a wide grin. She jumped on her feet and skipped toward you.
"Hey giiiiirl" She drawled out excitedly. "Long time no see!"
"Hey Steph" You chuckled, going for the hug. "Sorry I didn't call, I have no excuses"
"Don't worry about it" She waved off with an airy laugh. She knew how busy school kept you, and how you kind of wanted to separate yourself fromthe vigilante life. "I'm just glad you're here"
"So am I" Bruce called from the computers. He gave you a subtle smile, and you nodded back to him. "It seems like we're in a bit of an impasse here"
You didn't miss the quick glare he sent to Tim and Steph, who sheepishly avoided looking back at him. It didn't seem too serious though, or the air would have drastically changed.
"Before he says anything, know it wasn't our fault" Steph hurried to say.
"We were totally ambushed by Vicky Vale" Tim nodded along."No idea what she did there, but she was, and she saw right through our disguises. We had to bolt before she exposed us"
You frowned in confusion. "Okay can someone tell me what is going on here?"
"Tim and Steph were supposed to go undercover and cozy up with the high leaders of what I have suspicions on good authority are transiting premium grade opium into the US and Europe, and are close partners to Count Vertigo" Bruce began, already exhausted. "But as they said, Vicky Vale was somehow invited to the banquet and singled them out immediately before they could get even near the big guys"
"My magnificent blond mane attracts way too much attention, I'm afraid" Steph sighed sadly, making you chuckle. "It's a curse, babes. I tell ya"
"Keep telling yourself that, Stephi" A new voice came from the top of the stairs. You both wanted suddenly to go back to your books as a big part of why you barely tag along on missions anymore skipped down the stairs. Damn Dick Grayson, damn him. "We all know covert missions are not your strong point"
"I'm gonna kill you in your sleep, Grayson" She smiled sweetly at him.
"No, because you suck at being subtle" He returned the grin, just as sweetly if not more. He ruffled her hair as he passed by. "What's up Timbo"
He hummed something unintelligible, flipping his brother off. Dick laughed, then almost added something when he finally noticed you. His laughter died down and his eyes widened, and suddenly he looked uncomfortable. "Oh, you're here"
"So it seems" You replied as flatly as he spoke. It wasn't new, you had never known how to act around each other. Did you hate him? Of course not, you had absolutely no reason to. Did you consider him your friend? Hard to say. All you knew was that any and every encounter you had with Dick Grayson was awkward. You got along with Tim just fine, and even Jason when he was still around. You loved Cass and Duke, and you even managed to get on Dami's good side, or most of the time anyway. But Dick remained a mystery to you, one that had eluded you for years now. You didn't understand a single thing about that boy, and you doubted you ever would. You've had conversations before, loads of them, and you had no doubt he would make an amazing friend, but you couldn't seem to get past the stage of acquaintances.
Which was frankly disappointing, because you had been instantly attracted by his charms and easygoing nature when you first met. You had been drawn to him, and you couldn't try and pretend you hadn't pinned after him for the longest time. But you hit a wall when his behaviour began changing wildly around you, right around the time you slipped flirts every now and then to let him know that you were into him. Right now, you were just really over his poor attempts at pretending he never noticed it happen.
"So" Bruce spoke up, breaking the tension that had suddenly arisen in the cave. "Tomorrow night we'll have a new opening to try and get to them, hopefully without interruption this time. I've taken a look at the list, and no reporter was on it. We should be good"
"But Tim and Steph already got busted" You pointed out. "They'll know something is up if they show up again"
"That's why they will be seen at the Gotham Charity Auction at the museum" He explained, meeting your eyes. "That's why I called you up. You'll be going undercover with Dick as husband and wife"
"What?" Dick coughed almost immediately. "We're not–" He laughed nervously. "Us? As a married couple? This is ridiculous"
Your head turned sharply toward him, your eyebrows raised in disbelief. "Wow, thanks a lot for the vote of confidence" You snapped. "I didn't know being my fake husband was such a terrible perspective"
"No– Wait– That's not–" He stuttered, his eyes wide. "I didn't mean it that way"
"Sure" You rolled your eyes, before turning to Bruce again. He had an unreadable expression on his face, more unreadable than usually anyway. Tim and Steph stood there in stunned silence, not daring to speak up. "What's the briefing?"
Bruce glanced in between you and Dick, before looking back at you again. "Félix Lachance and Stella Gustavsson, they're the one you need to befriend. Since you're not known to the public, it'll be easier for Dick to pass under the radar and not cause an incident like last time"
"We get it, B" Tim muttered under his breath as Bruce passed you the files with the pictures.
"I need you to retrieve any information you can" He continued, ignoring Tim's comment. "Names of business partners, location of transactions, dates, anything, you know the gig. Your occupation and alias if you want one will be at your discretion, I trust you can deal with that. As always you need to be extremely careful as not to alert them, because this is our last chance to get the critical Intel we need to take this down. So I'll need you at your A game, both of you"
This was a warning and you knew it. He let you know more or less subtly to put aside whatever was happening between you and behave like adults. You straightened your back and took a deep breath, getting your head in the right mindset.
"Alright, I'll be ready for tomorrow night" You nodded as you gathered the files. "Can I stay over tonight? There is no point in trying to study now"
"You don't need to ask, (Y/N), you're always welcome here" Bruce said, a hint of fondness in his voice. He always liked having you around, he said your presence tamed the boys. You nodded and made your way upstairs, finding the room you claimed as your own for about a year, and the same you always came back to when you stayed the night.
You went to the drawers, fishing out old training clothes you had left behind. You weren't sure all those were yours, they were probably mixed with pieces you stole from Steph and Cass. In return, they probably did also steal from your drawer occasionally, balancing it all out. You were about to change into something comfy for bed when a soft knock at your door caught your attention. You walked to it and tentatively opening the door, your expression flattening when you saw how it was.
"Yes?"
"Hey um" Dick scratched the back of his neck. "I just wanted to say, I'm sorry it came out that way. I just meant that it would be, you know, weird"
You stared at him blankly. "You're not helping your case here, Dick"
"Shit, that's not what I mean either!" He hurried to say, realizing his mistake. But you were already closing the door. "Please (Y/N)–"
"Get some rest Dick" You said as you pushed the door closed. You sighed and shook your head before adding in a whisper, "God knows we'll need it"
------
You had done covert missions before, but this was the first time you were operating in such conditions. You finished retouching your hair, staring at yourself in the mirror, wondering whether or not it was more expensive than your total life income. The floor length champagne coloured dress was stunning, tailored to your form and just sparkly enough to let you shine through the design. You suspected the shoes were made especially to fit with the dress, as they resembled its lace and belt colour. You were sporting on top of that a heavy diamond necklace with matching earrings, proving the general high cost of the outfit. Your comm was carefully tucked in your ear, functional and well hidden.
"Oh my my" Steph whistled lowly. "If I wasn't dating Timbers I would date you"
You laughed. "This is the outfit talking. You haven't seen me tired and puffy in sweatpants just yet"
"Grump, just take the damn compliment" She playfully poked your exposed shoulder.
"Alright alright, thanks" You rolled your eyes. "Since it's gonna be the only one coming from this household anyway"
Steph wiggled her eyebrows. "Wouldn't be so sure about that" She said in a sing-song voice. "Your fake boyfriend may have some thoughts too"
"Ha" You snorted, walking out of your room with her following at your side. "It's good, that you're wishful thinking. The boy can't seem to talk to me without insulting me lately"
"Trust me, he won't be able to resist to this bombshell" She gestured at your form. "Dick's a people pleaser, and looking like a whole five course meal like that, you sure are easy to please if you want my opinion"
You shook your head, a small grin on your face. Steph had always been your favourite for a reason. She knew how you felt about Dick, but she never meddled. Well, not more than she typically would anyway, and not enough to cross your boundaries. And even then, she had no explanation either for his behaviour. You finally reached the foyer, where Bruce was dressed casually, sleeves rolled up and without a tie, talking to an all dressed up Dick, his hair now dark red and with almost black contact lenses. Your heels clicking on the stairs was what snapped their attention to you; Bruce nodding at his choice of dress for you, and Dick, his mouth slightly agape. You felt Steph gently but excitedly elbowing your ribs.
"Ah, (Y/N), there you are" Bruce said. "I'm glad to see the dress fits well"
"Yeah" Dick tried to smile, but it came out more like a grimace. "You look okay"
You blinked in disbelief as you heard Steph's facepalm behind you. You closed your eyes and exhaled through your nose, while Bruce shook his head slightly at his son.
"Yikes" Tim made his presence known. You shared this one word mood immensely right about now. "Way to go D"
Dick cleared his throat, trying to push back the embarrassment blush creeping up his cheeks. "Uh, shall we go?"
"That would be preferable, yes" Bruce replied, making Steph choke and cover he laughter with a cough. The way he said it was clearly meant to be a jab to his son's tactless attitude. "Be careful"
"Of course" You smiled tightly and all but dragged Dick outside. You'd take one of Bruce's luxury car to get there, and it was already waiting in the driveway. Dick pressed the door button and slowly, they lifted up to let you in. You slid in the passenger seat without waiting for Dick's help and you kept your eyes on the windshield in from of you as he began to drive. The ride was silent until he decided to speak again, tentatively.
"It's nice to see you all dressed up, for once" He said, still clearly not thinking of his choice of words more carefully. "It's different. A good different!"
For once? Was he serious?
You audibly sighed. "I'm begging you to just stop talking"
"What?" He objected, confused. "What did I say wrong this time– Oh"
"Yeah" You replied, your tone clipped and dry.
"I'm an idiot" He mumbled under his breath. That you could agree on, but you didn't voice it out loud.
He couldn't pull into the driveway fast enough. You slipped on your fake engagement ring as Dick stopped in front of the awaiting valet, doing himself the same thing. You both had a recording device slipped in your clothes, and the ring allowed you to turn it on and off at will, as well as the comm in your ear. You turned both off for the awaiting scan at the entrance, as not to emit detectable frequencies.
"Ready?" He asked, and you gave him a firm nod. He got out first and rounded the car, opening your door for you as he would be expected to by this particular crowd. You took his offered hand to climb out and linked your arm to his as he gave the keys to the valet in exchange for a ticket. He left a tip before you walked inside, registering to the guest list. You passed the security checkpoint without a hassle and found yourself in the hall where the auction was held. You turned on your comm and recording device again.
"Recon first, then regroup?" You suggested in a mutter as you were both visually scanning the room.
"Yep" He replied shortly. "B, copy?"
"Crystal clear"
"Good. Let's go"
While Dick headed to the bar, you opted for the art collection on display, pretending to scout for potential pieces to bid on. But your eyes weren't on the expensive paintings and statues, but moved around the room to spot some VIP lounge or area where the big shots might hang out at. There was a room where attendees came and went, but you shrugged it off as there wasn't enough security for the profile you were searching for. You paused your recon for small talk here and there, and you were in the middle of a casual chat about painted landscapes with an older gentleman when Dick rejoined your side, handing you a drink.
"There you are honey" He smiled sweetly, his unusually dark brown eyes reflecting the light from the chandelier.
"Joey, my love, allow me to introduce you to Sir Fernand Bretworth of Essex" His alias flew out of your mouth naturally, then you took a small sip of your drink. Non alcoholic, nice thinking. "We were discussing impressionism and its influence on modern art"
You wanted to smirk at the clueless look Dick gave you. He was a prodigy in a lot of things, but art wasn't one. It was more Damian's thing, or Tim's if he tried hard enough, but definitely not Dick's. Take that now.
"Ah, yes..." He replied slowly. "Fascinating indeed"
"Alright" You let out a small, cover up laugh as your hand rested on his bicep. "My husband has little interest in art, my apologies"
"No offence taken" He chuckled. "I'll leave you two, my wife must be looking for me. An old fool like me gets easily distracted!"
You laughed along with him until he was out of earshot. Then you dropped your hand and turned to him. "Noticed anything?"
"Yeah, there is a guarded room with special access" He said as you walked deeper into the crowd not to look suspicious. "Only owned of a special pass can go in, and the guards are very thorough"
"Great" You breathed. "Now let's hope out lovebirds will come out to mingle"
"As it turns out..." He trailed off, and instinctively, you began turning your head toward where his gaze lead. He immediately redirected your head back to him with a firm, but gentle touch on your cheek. His hand remained there for about three seconds longer than necessary, until he realized what he did and retracted his arm. You could have almost enjoyed it if he didn't look like he was touched by literal fire. "Don't look"
"Sorry" You mumbled, avoiding his gaze.
"... They got out, they're talking to people" He informed you, ignoring what just went down. "You go for Stella, I'll take Felix. Remember, friendly but not suspicious. Sweet talk your way into spilling the beans"
"I know" You bit back, your voice low. "Not my first mission, remember? I know what to do"
"I was just reminding you"
"Yeah, I got that" You scoffed. "If you don't trust me, just say so, it'll save you trouble of babying me"
"Come on, that's not–"
He began arguing, but you walked away before you could slip up and say his real name. It would give him one more reason to come down on you like you were a beginner in need of guidance. You were rusty, not stupid. You didn't need him insulting your undercover talents as well. You stopped in front of a beautiful emerald necklace that had a start bid of ten millions dollars and took a long sip of your drink, now kind of bummed it was non alcoholic. But that very detail was probably why you felt a presence approaching you from behind, giving you a few seconds to compose yourself and sweep your frustration under the rug.
"Trouble in paradise?"
You turned around, surprised. It looked like the voice made you jump, when it was in fact the nature of the question that threw you off, as well as the person who had spoken. Before you could ask, the Stella Gustavsson smiled warmly and nodded to where Dick had been seconds earlier.
"I saw what happened" She began, and your heart skipped a beat, hoping she hadn't overheard. "Those frustrated hands gesture are all too familiar. What did he do?"
You relaxed slightly, for now. "We've been having trouble lately, well, more than usually" You explained with a little complicit cock of your head. She seemed to get it. You, on the other hand, knew Dick was hearing everything on his comm, so you decided to go for it. "He's acting... Weird. Can't seem to talk to me without irritating me, whether on purpose or not. I'm sorry, I'm venting to a stranger, I can't imagine how it must look look like.
"Don't worry about it dear, I asked" She winked, extending her hand. "I'm Stella"
"Aleka" You shook her hand.
"Your dress is stunning, by the way!" She exclaimed. "Which designer?”
You froze for a second before shrugging. "No idea, my designer got it for me" You brushed off. "As long as it looks good, I don't care where it comes from"
"Amen" She said, taking a sip of her champagne. "Although, I need to know the name of your designer. They have amazing taste, and I'm looking for a new one for myself"
Oh shit.
"It's B" You replied instantly.
"Bee?"
"Yeah" You nodded, and she looked at you incredulously. "I mean, that's what we all call him. I'm sure he has a name, but I pay him to dress me, not to know his personal life"
"Harsh, (Y/N)" Bruce said in your ear, and you remembered he had been listening to everything. "But nice save"
She laughed, unaware of the comments from Batman himself. "That is very true. How have I not met you before? I feel we have a lot in common"
"I sincerely have no idea" You replied, adding a little gasp of disbelief.
"You're different from this crowd, I can feel it" She kept going on as you started walking side by side in the exposition room. "Everyone here only cares about petty, trivial things. You have a head on your shoulders, you're smart. Too bad your man can't seem to see what's in front of him"
You sighed in agreement to hide the fist pump of victory that threatened to come up. Just like that, you had won Stella over. "I don't know what to do about it. I've tried to talk to him, but it just makes it worse"
"But have you tried to make him jealous?" She suggested with a perfectly shaped eyebrow raised. "There are plenty of young men around, or older bachelors if you're into that. Flirt with them, make sure he sees you, he'll come running, take my word"
"It won't work, he's not–" Even my boyfriend, you were about to say, but you saved your fall just on time. Still, you could practically see Dick's glare in the back of your head at the almost slip up. "Jealous. He's not a jealous man, he's very confident and secure"
"What a shame" She drawled out, going for her champagne again. "Here's what you can do then. Go to him, take him by the neck and french kiss him like there is no tomorrow”
You choked on your saliva as she watched you with a mischievous grin. "Excuse me?"
"It's guaranteed to work, darling" She lifted her shoulder in an elegant shrug. "Then you hold him off. You'll thank me later tonight when you're back at home, just wait and see"
You were about to argue some more, but her insisting stare told you she wasn't just going to let it go. So you scanned the crowd for Dick, spotting him casually excusing himself from a conversation group, going for a refill at the bar. You reached him and grabbed him by the elbow, bringing him face to face with you. You made sure your back was to Stella before beginning to explain the situation.
"I heard" He told you in a mutter, making sure his lips were unreadable under Stella's stare from the distance.
"Then you know what she expects" You sighed, slipping your hands behind his neck. "It doesn't have to be deep, just convincing. Can you do this without grimacing?"
You thought he would stumble into some weak apology, or say something clever. He did neither, instead dived straight for your lips so quickly it was you who was taken by surprise. Naturally, all you could do is kiss him back and try to keep up with him. At some point you thought he would break off, but you weren't prepared for him to actually deepen the kiss. He wasn't letting you go, and it made you dizzy in all the best ways. Let's say you were thankful for his arm around your waist right about now. Finally, you still had to breathe, so you parted reluctantly.
"What was that for?" You asked, your eyes still dazed.
"An apology for irritating you unintentionally" He grinned boyishly, for probably the first time ever directed at you. "I'm an idiot"
"Can confirm" You replied, bringing him down on your lips again. This time, it was a bit shorter, but the spark was still very much present. "You should have done this a long time ago"
"I know" He nodded, his head slightly down and his puppy dog eyes shining even underneath the dark contact lenses. "You're a bit intimidating, I didn't know how to act"
You let out a loud laugh at his confession. "You're kidding"
He pouted.
"Me?" You repeated. "But you're– You're you!"
"Well, duh" He chuckled. "You've got me all tangled in here," He pointed at his chest. "Made me nervous all the time"
You melted just a little bit at his little display, before remembering doing this was a specialty of his. You were just not used to be on the receiving end of it. "You're lucky you're cute, and that I'm already sold on you"
The bright grin returned.
"As heartwarming as this moment is, please focus on the task at hand" Bruce's stern voice echoed in your head, and you were suddenly reminded your conversation had been integrally transmitted to him.
"Right, sorry" Dick apologized sheepishly.
"See, I told you"
This time, you were taken by surprise by Stella walking on you. Even Bruce's intervention hadn't quite brought you back to reality. Damn Dick Grayson, damn him. You turned around, trying to hide your flustered state and instead focusing on the tall gentleman at her side. Must be Felix Lachance, you thought.
"It works every time" She added, sipping from a new glass of champagne.
"You were right" You let out an airy laugh. "Stella, this is my husband Joey Moore. Joey, this is my new friend Stella"
They shook hands before she introduced her husband to the both of you. You already knew his name, but you both pretended you didn't for the sake of your covers.
"Nice to meet you two" Félix smiled politely.
"Hey, would you like to go for a drink after this?" Stella asked. "I sure would like to get to know you two better"
Dick and you exchanged a glance, knowing you had locked the target. Acquiring intel from now on would only be a piece of cake, the base was laid for further actions. You smiled, returning your glance to Stella.
"That would be absolutely lovely"

Trauma Holodeck - Promise (pt 1)
...Somehow I’ve managed to get [ETA] two  THREE posts worth of material out of this segment.
PART 1 (below the cut) - a breakdown of the memory itself (that is, what I read into the scene)
PART 2  - covers the in-universe framing elements (the significance of when and how the Trauma Holodeck presented this to Catra)
PART 3 - Covering exactly what conclusions Catra drew, and which ones she missed
Content warnings: child abuse (physical and emotional), threats of violence against children, assault, trauma, references to trauma responses including delusion, dissociation, and disordered attachment.
DISCLAIMER
This is tagged as a “problematic Adora” post because it explores the roots of her dysfunctions, not because she carries any particular blame for the things she said and did as a four year old abuse victim.
...yeah, this post is gonna be an absolute laugh riot.
Tumblr media
[young Catra crying]
Four year old Catra is huddled on her bunk, hiding under a blanket, alone and sobbing.
Something has happened to cause this.
Tumblr media
Adora is looking for Catra.
Which means Adora knows that something is wrong.
Tumblr media
She asks no questions; only immediately reassures Catra that “It’s just me”, because she knows Catra is hiding, not just upset.
Adora is acting with full understanding - she knows exactly what happened, even if we the audience do not.
But oh, we can guess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After all, we already know that Shadow Weaver has no compunctions about threatening Catra, or that Catra reacts to those threats with real fear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(And we get confirmation in the next episode)
We don’t need to see Catra getting slapped around to know that Shadow Weaver assaulted Catra, and Catra ran away to hide.
Obviously, 4 year old Catra being assaulted is a harm against Catra - besides the physical injury, she is being violently denied basic security in her body and relationships, and implicitly or explicitly told that she does not deserve to be safe, cared for, or loved. That that there is nothing she can do that will earn her kindness, and there is no grace to be found for her.
But there’s a lot more happening here than just “Catra was abused, feel bad for her”.
Tumblr media
Because Adora knows.
Adora knows, and she knows in an absolute, unquestioning way that can only reflect that of a first-hand witness.
Adora knows what happened, because she saw it.
Adora saw Shadow Weaver hurt Catra, and could do nothing, not even join Catra in fleeing.
Catra’s abuse was never a secret. Adora has always, always known that Shadow Weaver beats Catra. Shadow Weaver explicitly and intentionally forces Adora to witness Catra’s abuse. Because that is part of Adora’s abuse.
Hurting Catra, when Adora can do nothing, is grinding Adora’s nose in her own powerlessness. It’s letting her know that she has no control. It’s a warning that, if she doesn’t behave just so, she will be next. It is making sure that Adora knows that her safety, care and love are conditional.
That’s why she says “It doesn’t matter what they do to us.” - because Adora is being hurt, even if Shadow Weaver never lays a finger on her.
Tumblr media
“You look out for me, I look out for you.”
Adora wants someone to look out for her, sure. That’s a part of this ask here. But more importantly - she wants Catra to believe in Adora’s power to protect. Because if Catra believes, then Adora can, too. Catra’s belief allows Adora to reclaim a tiny, illusory scrap of the control her abuse denies her.
Adora is trying to comfort her friend, but just as much (if not more), she is trying to comfort herself.
Tumblr media
Adora: “Nothing really bad can happen, as long as we have each other.”
To the point of frank delusion.
This is irrational - Adora might as well have said “Nothing really bad can happen, as long as we always wear matching socks.”
They are four year old children; they have no power to stop bad things from happening. If Shadow Weaver up and decided to murder Catra, Adora would be as unable to prevent it as she is to stop the beatings. Their situation is already really bad, and they have no actual means to keep it from getting worse.
Which is why she needs to be irrational. Given the choice between living with constant rational terror, and an irrational sense of control? Being irrational lets you keep moving. False hope can keep you alive, until you can lay hands on the real thing.
Tumblr media
Catra: “You promise?”
Adora: “I promise.”
Even as a four year old, Catra probably never really believed in Adora’s protection. Oh, she internalized the “you look out for me, I look out for you” part - the idea that they would protect each other to whatever extent they could. And she believes that Adora’s promise is sincere in that context...
Tumblr media
But she doesn’t believe in Adora’s ability to deliver. She wordlessly agrees, not because she thinks that Adora will protect her, but because once she agrees, then Adora will comfort her. She has never really wanted Adora’s protection - but agreeing to it is the price she pays to have Adora care for her. Because care is the core thing that Catra is being denied by her abuse.
(I’m reading this from Catra’s gaze, btw - She looks towards Adora during elements which she believes and internalizes, and away when she disbelieves and distrusts.)
Tumblr media
This exchange completed, their “normal” established (and from Adora’s perspective, the situation “fixed”), they venture back out into the world at Adora’s behest.
Adora’s need for control, Catra’s need for care, both driven by the abuse they suffered at Shadow Weaver’s hands. These are the oldest, deepest bones of their relationship, and I cannot stress enough that - in this moment, as children - being able to have those needs fulfilled by each other is what allowed them to survive their absolute nightmare horror show of a childhood.
Tumblr media
But we can already see the roots of Adora’s serious adult dysfunctions: the magical thinking, the seeking of external validation, how she denies and diminishes the reality and severity of their abuse, the transactional nature of the relationship.
(Catra’s dysfunctions are also on display - her combined emotional closedness and neediness, her defensiveness, how she runs away when threatened or frightened.)
As with all of their childhood relationship - this interaction was necessary and important (and the best they could do, being as they are), but it wasn’t good.
