The Powerpuff Problem
See the thing with Powerpuff Girls is for four seasons it's like this:
"Oh, our hit kids show isn't that weird. I mean sure, it's a show that stars adorable little girls that are so unapologetically violent that there's blood in the intro and even some episodes..."
"OH GOD, aliens are invading! And even worse - THEY'RE BROCCOLI!"
"...they fight a zombie magician, we do a mecha episode whilst simultaneously mocking the mecha genre, one of the main recurring villains is straight up Satan..."
"Oh I'm sorry, did you wanna go on vacation? Too bad, your absence will mean the end of society as you know it. Everyone you know is either miserable, insane, or dead, and they all blame you! Did I mention you're five?"
"...in fact we have another one called Sedusa...now that I think about it we put a lot of innuendos in this actually..."
"Hey. Hey Craig. Hey Craig I wanna do a double length episode where the stars of this children's show say "dick" over and over again, is that cool? Great...also I'm giving it one of the darkest endings we've ever done k byyyyyyyyyyyyye."
"...b-but there's cute stuff too! There's a fun episode where the girls play inside on a rainy day, there's one where they get turned into cute little puppies, there's one where they sing about love to save the day, there's one where they eat candy which we use as a way to tackle the subject of addiction-wait..."
"Let's do our own take on Frankenstein! Can it have a sudden downer ending that will scar a generation of kids? Sure, f*ck it!"
"...OK maybe it's pretty weird. But being unique is good! That's part of what our show's all about - it's unusual to see little girls being the ones who kick butt, but they're characters young girls deserve to see, and characters EVERYONE can be inspired by. Now let's watch the movie that came out less than a year after 9/11 where the heroes destroy a city that totally doesn't resemble NYC!"
Then the last two are just...
"OK, who wet the bed?"
"So in this episode these usually kickass heroines are forced to quietly ask a criminal to leave their house, with noooooo onscreen fighting whatsoever... don't worry the kids will love it!"
"...and then all the characters sing about how they should all get along. The End! All of them? Yep. Even the villains? Yep. Even Him? Yep. With no bait-and-switch joke where all the villains immediately go back to their old ways? Correct!"
"OK, so like...crying. We make can make 11 minutes out of that, right?"
"Let's bring back the Rowdyruff Boys, not just for a rematch, but permanently! OK! What do you want them to do? Graffiti, rob and beat up people for fun, property damage, stuff like that. Don't the Gangreen Gang do that stuff already? I guess. So what will THEY do? Eh I dunno turn them into simps for an episode. Anyway, wouldn't it be cool if 2 out of the 6 appearances the RRB make after being revived never actually happened?"
"Yes of course we need multiple close-up shots of the sunburnt, bulging skin of three five-year-old girls. Yes of course we have to show it peeling off towards the end! How else are we gonna teach kids to use sunscreen? Could you tell this episode was part of the Chris Savino era?"
"Hey is it just me or is the pacing of our newer episodes kinda...slow? What do you mean? They're fin-zzzzzzzzzzzz-"
"mAyOr wAnT ToAst!"
#powerpuff girls#ppg#cartoon network#cn#there are good episodes in the later seasons but even they tend to be plagued with slower pacing and in my opinion a worse overall look#I won't lie I'm a pointy-eared Mojo hater#townsville looks fine but is sterile and almost always blue - they don't play with its colours like in earlier episodes#even the girls look off - their bodies often look too small compared to their heads and their arms are often too short and blunt#with a few exceptions there also seems to be less action and more of a focus on comedy#which is too bad considering I think the first four seasons are much funnier

Dragon Ball Z: Abridged Episode 53 Review
Tension rises again.
The nature of a comedic abridged series is often antithetical to what is required to establish and build tension within a story. It is far funnier for, say, a powerful egomaniac to have his pride and body quickly shattered when faced with a powerful enemy than it is to still give that egomaniac a chance at victory and for his actions to matter within a story. Being funny can also mean sacrificing clear stakes within your story as well, as shown earlier this season with the threat of Androids 16, 17, and 18, who were kinda dickish to be sure, but never overtly evil or threatening outside of the potential fate of country music.
But just as Team Four Star knows when to cut the jokes to establish deeper character drama or emphasize important themes, they also know when to pull the punchline and establish real stakes. Itâs the reason they show us a character having to patiently power-up to attack for the first time in Dragonball Z: Abridged (a recurring event in the original show); they know that by making us wait for Trunks to fully exert himself against Cell, it will be all the more impactful when we finally see it, and also finally see a chance for one of our heroes to achieve real victory within this story.
The decision to use an orchestral cover of Hikari no Willpower helps build tension here too, as does the excellent editing. There are only a few brief pauses in Trunksâ fight against Cell, and they are used to tie our empathy even more strongly into Trunks and remind us of the threat Cell poses, further investing us in the result of their battle. Itâs such a memorable fight sequence that it almost seems like it lasts the entire episode, when in fact, it is only a couple minutes long, perfectly placed in the middle of the episode so that we have time to process Trunksâ defeat.
His loss to Cell, despite achieving Ultra Saiyan Form, is a tough pill to swallow, placing all of our heroes and the world into danger, as no one else has even come close to being able to harm Cell in his perfect form, but it also thrusts the story forward into the final act, with our heroes finally having hit their lowest point.
Even here though, Trunks does receive a minor victory, having goaded Cell into sparing him by teasing that Cell would be forgotten when Goku eventually defeated him, and turning Cellâs sights on another goal beyond the destruction of the earth. Cell may have hit a nerve when he reminded Trunks of his failure to save his timelineâs Gohan, but Trunks pinpoint verbal strike revealed that Cellâs ultimate weakness is a desire found in everyone.
The desire for an immortal legacy.
Rating: 4.5/5

Stray Observations
Showing off the enhanced mental abilities of Super Saiyan Goku by having him ramble on about the statistics of the various Saiyan forms is a really clever way to characterize how much more focused he can be when fighting is the only thing he has to think about.
That âDonât break Popoâs stuffâ is so ingrained in Goku speaks to him having experiencing the wrath of that vengeful deity once already, and I imagine that he could use a hug after being reminded.
Krillin Owned: Weâre up to a count of thirty-six now, because Krillin is bad at judging how much self-deprecating humor Vegeta is emotionally capable of.
That said, Krillin deserves more than a dime for every time heâs been beat up. Iâd say each âOwned Countâ is worthy of ten dollars, which means Krillin should have $360 by now. That totally pays off the hundred thousand dollars he has in debt, right?

FULL REVIEWS:Â âEnchanting Grom Frightâ
The hype for this episode was unreal. We got the crew telling us that we werenât ready on social media. It was a madhouse. To think that the little ship that could would have this big a leap in canon is unreal. Letâs just get to it.
The cold open starts with Luz trying to find more glyphs in her off time. I thinks it really shows her development so far. Now sheâs willing to do the work to figure out her kind of magic, as oppose to say episode two where she just wanted to be great because she was âchosen.â
âMy glyph skills are blossomingâ
But then reality ensues...
Using the portal to let the wifi signal into The Owl House is not the dumbest reason Iâve heard to open an interdimensional portal between worlds but it is one of the most mundane. SOMEHOW, Luz can still receive texts from her mom FROM ANOTHER WORLD. Not that it makes too much of a difference since Luz barely answers them.Â
As much fun as it is to focus on the magic and the shipping and the friendship and the curse, Luz still knows that sheâs still lying to her mom. The guilt is there, but luckily being a main character keeps her too busy to think about it.
âLuz, time to fill that darling head of yours with...huuh huuh huuh HAKKK, mmm, mmm, mmh, delicious knowledge.â
Never change, Hooty.
Itâs that time of year again that Luz doesnât know about yet, Grom: The Boiling Islesâ weird version of prom. Every fantasy world has one.Â
*hiss*
Amity bumps into Luz, and I know this is going to sound weird, but I really like Amityâs âWatch it, nitwit.â Amityâs character has changed and developed from our perspective which is the perspective of Luz and The Owl House fam. But sheâs not a completely different character. Amity still has a bit of a temper and gets agitated easily. It makes sense to me and Iâm glad I havenât found anyone be like âHey if Amity is nicer, why did she get mad when she bumped into someone?âÂ
Amity is nicer to Luz and co. because sheâs gotten to know Luz and co. You donât treat everyone in your life the same. Amity is one of those people that you need to defrost with first. Belief is backed up by experience and so are peopleâs personas. (Not that persona. Iâm being serious here.) Because of Amityâs experiences, sheâs believed that in order to survive she has to put people at armâs length, then when she gets to know you, sheâll decide if she wants to let you in or not. So I guess that means that based on her interactions with Luz, Amity has decided...
You know what? Iâll save that for my Lumity meta.
The popular theory is that Amity was going to put her note in Luzâs locker, hence why she bumped into them. But actually seeing Luz and being announced as grom queen probably made her lose her nerve.
âEmbrace your dreams...â
Amity is announced to be this yearâs grom queen. Luz is happy for her before Amity runs in shock and embarrassment. Okay.
Luz discovers the gymâs weapons cache (not a thing I thought I would ever type) and Amity explains grom. Since Luz is from the human world and all that.
Grom is a monster that lives under the school and needs to be defeated every year so it doesnât invade the town. Itâs a classic shape-shifting fear monster. Odd are I have (and so have you) at least seen three or four of these in our lives already. Amity doesnât want to show the entire school her greatest fear, especially since she already knows what it is. Luz suggest talking to Bump and Amity says sheâll try.
Another scene of Eda and King laughing and mocking Luz. Because I liked it so much the first time.
Eda gets dressed up herself because sheâs volunteered to chaperone grom. Luz tells her that Amity is grom queen but wishes that she could take her place. We get...you know and Luz walks off.Â
âI think we should kiss to ease the tension.â
Luz randomly meets up with Amity in the woods because I guess Amity had the same idea to take a walk to clear her head. Whatever. Amity tells Luz that Bump wasnât going to change his mind unless Amity found a replacement. Luz volunteers because...sheâs Luz, friend to all.
Except maybe that spider.
Top 10 Anime Betrayals
The Blight Siblings try to help Luz train against grom only for Eda to find out about their little plan. Hereâs where we find out why Eda volunteered to chaperone a Hexside event even though she hates that place:
âWhatâs the fun in watching a kid get eaten by a monster if itâs my kid?â
Thatâs hilarious. To me.Â
Luz and Amity have a moment before Luzâs debut and Amity thanks Luz for everything sheâs done. They have more adorable banter before Luz takes the stage.Â
âWish me luck.â
âLuck.â
Iâm guessing thatâs not an expression in The Boiling Isles.
Luz faces Grom and it seems to be going better than everyone predicted until...you know
âMija, this would be such a good shot for the trailer.â
Yup, we all predicted this. Luzâs greatest fear is her mom finding out that sheâs been lying to her. Luz panics and takes off with Eda and Amity to chase after her.
Eda comes in for the save when Amity bursts in the scene saying âBoy let me tell you what.â She doesnât really I just like saying that. You know, in my head. I mean, if you heard the way I was saying it out loud youâd probably think it was funny too but you know...text.
Grom gets a hold of Amity and transforms into her greatest fear. And we see why Amity didnât want to face Grom in front of the whole school. She didnât want everyone to see that Amityâs fear is very...emotional. Not physical. Sheâs not afraid of a giant spider or anything. Itâs a little closer to the heart.
Amity clutching at her dress like a little kid is both the cutest and the saddest thing. This fear of hers is so bad it makes this fourteen year old feel like sheâs four. Iâm so sure she was about to cry right there. Or maybe thatâs me. Could be both.
Luz picks up the note and discovers that Amity was trying to ask somebody out before she was announced as grom queen. Amity was afraid of being rejected. Luz tries to ease her fears by asking her out to grom.Â
Trying seeing it from Luzâs point of view. She has no idea who Amity wants to ask out. Luz doesnât even consider that it could be her because again, belief is backed by experience. Luz was considered a weirdo with no friends in the human world. She even said earlier in the episode that she got kicked out of her last school dance for dressing like an otter. Luz has no reason to believe that someone would like her romantically. She would like to. It is a fantasy of hers, but her experience tells her that other people donât see her that way so she doesnât consider that Amity wanted to ask Luz out.
Iâll save the rest for another blog post, although I did talk about this last year too.
But since Amity did want to ask Luz out and Luz asked her out instead, Amityâs fears are eased. Grom does what every fear monster does when their target overcomes their fears and says âScrew it, Iâm just going to kick your ass!â
And then this happens:
As a Star vs the Forces of Evil fan, let me just say this is our Blood Moon Ball moment. The moment that the show tells the audience in John Oliverâs voice, âYup this is the ship weâre doing so strap in folks.â
Luz and Amity work together to combine magic to take down Grom. It also helps that they eased each othersâ fears. Luz canât think about her mom if sheâs focused on helping Amity.Â
Luz and Amity defeat Grom in a blaze of glory. Luz being Luz, decides to ask Amity who she wanted to ask out just to see if she would tell you. Amity brushes it off.
âIt doesnât matter. After all, I already got to dance with the girl I like.â
Everyone celebrates but when Luz gets home sheâs more tired than anything.
Maybe it was Grom, but Luz decides to give her mom a real answer. Itâs been tough but itâs also been fun. There are good and bad days. Sometimes she feels like she doesnât belong. But she has friends. They care about her, she cares about them, and thatâs more than enough reason to stay.Â
THEN THIS SHIT HAPPENS!
Yeah, the Meteora moment in Star vs the Forces of Evil. The moment where the show went âNever mind that shit. Here comes a complete change in the status quo.âÂ
Someone or something is sending Luzâs mom letters. Itâs Luzâs handwriting, but itâs clearly not Luz since she canât spell her name right. Season one already finished and we still have no idea what this is.Â
I was all happy a second ago. Now Iâm nervous as all hell. Itâs a madhouse I tells ya. A madhouse!
FINAL SCORE: 5 - LOVED IT!
Wow. Just wow. This episode had everything. Jokes, plot, romance, character development, cameos, dancing, girls, MOM(?), crashing on your couch because technically Iâm homeless.
I shipped Lumity before this, but this was the episode that told me that yes it was going to happen. Weâre all in.Â
But itâs not perfect.
Yeah, did any of you noticed that I didnât even mention the B-plot? Iâm going to be honest. The reason is...
I hate it.
I hate the B-plot so much that I skip it every time I watch this episode. I still donât think Gus is that funny or interesting. Hell, Skaraâs mini plot with her date and/or boyfriend was funnier.
But everything else about the episode more than outshines the B-plot so I still give it a five.
Next time we finish up the lumity trilogy next time.
Dammit I said next time twice.

Why I (Want to) Love Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Salutations, random people on the internet who most certainly wonât read this! Iâm an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons. I also LOVE the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Whether as a kid, or an adult pretending to be a kid, this franchise is one that Iâll always revisit no matter how old I get. So when I heard that a new version of the series was coming out in 2018, titled as Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I was excited about it. Then I watched the series...and most of that excitement went down the sewer drain.Â
Donât get me wrong, there were some elements that seemed like there was some definite promise for a good series, but other aspects...Iâll have to explain.Â
But keep in mind, I am going to be spoiling a lot about the series. So if you haven't watched it yet, I highly recommend you do so to form your own opinions. Because while it may not have grabbed me as much, that doesnât mean the same canât be said for you. With that out of the way, let's get started with--
WHAT I LIKE
The Animation: If anybody ever tells you that Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has awful animation, they are objectively wrong. Rise of the TMNT has some of the best, if not the best, animated fight scenes I've seen from any action series in recent memory. Probably because the show understands the number one rule of action animation: Good animation is a requirement. Not an exception.
For an action-oriented animated series, the audience needs to feel the impact whenever characters punch, block, or dodge in each fight. Yes, even dodge. Because if you can feel even the tiniest gust of wind that passes by a character's face after a punch, then you know the animators are doing something right. And trust me when I say that is present in the majority of most fights in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Are there moments when the movements are slow and rigid? Yes...during the dialogue and comedic scenes. Moments where good and quality animation isn't really all that necessary. You see this same technique in most modern anime: The animation is rigid and cheap for the dialogue-heavy scenes so the animators can give extra attention to the epic action set pieces. Not a single person complains about this happening in their favorite anime of the week. But when Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles does this, apparently it's a bad thing? Explain that logic to me!
The animation is phenomenal in this show. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise because those people are either blind or insanely stupid. Either works.
Itâs Pretty Funny: And that's about it. It's nowhere near one of the funniest shows I have seen, and previous iterations of the franchise did a much better job at balancing humor and heart, but Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did a great job at getting a laugh out of me from time to time. It has a very random sense of humor that works well with its manic energy, similar to what Star vs. the Forces of Evil did early on in its first season. Even if one joke fails, about ten more take its place, most of them funnier than the others. There may be an occasional issue where a joke spoils a dramatic moment, but Rise of the TMNT is one of the few shows where that issue doesn't happen often. Besides, the series sets itself up as more of a comedy than other reboots and reiterations, so it wouldn't look good if it wasn't funny. Thankfully, it is, and in a way, the show is a success because of it.
It Tries to be Something New: This is what I respect most about the series. The downside about a reboot is that writers have to find a way to tell the same story but with adjustments that make it seem different. That's the same way Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles operates as a franchise. The original concepts of the stories and characters are always iconic, and I'll love them with my whole heart, but I will admit, there's a point where the same thing over and over again can be a little tiring. Then there's Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which makes changes where other shows would ask "why," this is the one that asks "why not?"
Why not change the personality and backstories of characters that still fit with the spirit of the original?
Why not change the genders, races, and possibly sexualities of these iconic characters?
Why not make something new?
Now, some have argued that the show is a little too new. Which I can kind of see the point of. After all, what's the point of changing characters and concepts so drastically when you could just make an original series? But even then, most of the changes are pretty clever, that I think itâs worth remembering for future iterations. Like making Casey Jones a female. Casey is a gender-neutral name, and I legitimately thought this series would do it for that reason alone. So I feel bad that the writers never got a chance to allow the series to reach its full potential with ideas like this due to Nickelodeon screwing them over (Seriously, never pitch a show to Nickelodeon. It rarely ever works out, and it's not worth the risk). I can see how these ideas could result in an incredible show that might cement the series as one of the best iterations of the franchise. But I can't base a story on potential. I can only judge what I see, and what I see are brilliant changes that impress me from time to time.
The Creators Are Still Fans: Despite making something completely different, you can tell that everyone working on this show loves TMNT as the rest of the fans do. There are dozens of references to previous versions littered throughout the series. Whether it's shoutouts to the 90s cartoon to bringing back voice actors from the last one, there are moments where the crew behind the series emphasizes how much they care about the franchise. There are also times when a reference has such a deep cut to it. For example, the series has the previous VA for Splinter to voice the current version of Shredder. I shouldn't have to explain how that is a brilliant idea, especially given Shredder's relationship with Karai...which I can't fully explain due to it spoiling TMNT (2012). This might be a whole new experience, but it is clear that history is not ignored when it comes to Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The Cast is Colorful: It's not precisely a diversity win to have half the Turtles voiced by black VAs, but it is unquestionably some good sign of progress. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are...accurately what they are called. So they are not defined by the skin tone of the VAs themselves. So having half of them be voiced by people of color makes me hopeful that maybe future reboots would consider more colorful castings. Hell, maybe one day we'll have a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot where all of them are POCs, to the point that we'll have an all-Asian casting for these timeless heroes (which makes way too much sense to me).
And it's not just the casting of the turtles that impresses me. Because the series making April O'neil black is an idea that I'm more than ok with. It's implied that she's black in the original comics by Keven Eastman and Peter Laird, so it works as another deep-cut reference that proves how big of fans the crew is. Plus, who cares? I mean, if we're still having issues of changing the race of a character who was originally white, all I can say is grow the hell up. You can complain if they don't grab you, but if the issue is because of one decision that shouldn't negatively affect anybody, I don't see the problem. Besides, at this point, a character being white is basically the base plate for someone in the future to change their race at another time.
Also, letâs give the people behind the casting a pat on the back for casting Asian VAs for characters who are, well, Asian. Itâs the bare minimum of common courtesy and avoids the trouble of having white VAs do asian accents that have become quite culturally insensitive nowadays. So itâs a pretty cool decision if you ask me.
Diversity is never an issue, especially since representation always matters for people who demand to be heard. It's definitive proof that anybody can be anything, whether it's a hero in fiction or the voice of that hero behind the scenes. And you can't really do that when everyone is so white that it's blinding.
Donatello: This is the best character in the series. Not only because Donatello has the most consistent personality (more on that later), but also because I'm a sucker for the cynical super-geniuses. These types of characters always have a quick and dry wit that never fails to get a laugh out of me, and this version of Donatello became my favorite just for that factor alone. Most of the credit goes to Josh Brener, who does a phenomenal job at his performance and comedic delivery. As for the emotional bits, he's...fine, but the drama isn't the show's best strength anyway, so it doesn't matter as much. Because the fact that it's Donatello who earns the spot as best character in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot is an impressive feat in itself that any criticism offered for him is moot in the process.
WHAT I DISLIKE
Leonardo: I'm willing to make half of this a personal issue because I have grown to despise Ben Schwarts in the last four years. No offense to the guy, I'm sure he's a really great person in real life...but he has done nothing but play the same character in FOURS YEARS! Whether he's Leonardo, Dewey Duck, Sonic the Hedgehog, or even M.O.D.O.K.'s son (yes, that's a thing), Ben Schwarts has practically played the exact same character each time. The highly energized, dimwitted, and egotistical character who slowly tries to learn to be a better person in the end. AND SOMETIMES, NOT EVEN THAT! I'm sick of it, as it always breaks the immersion of the series as all I hear is Ben Schwarts and not the character he's voicing. But it's not just the voice behind Leonardo that frustrates me. Because the thing is, I can see how this version of him can be incredible.
It doesn't take a genius to know that this version of Leonardo is meant to be more childlike and carefree so he can morph into the more mature leader we all know and respect him as. The issue is that the writers barely do anything with that idea. Sure some episodes make this Leonardo more like, well, Leonardo, but they're far and few between the ones where he's the same Ben Schwarts character that I've grown to hate. Even when he is at his most Leo-like, as seen in the episode "Man vs. Sewer," it's so drastically different from how he usually acts that it feels less like character development and more like inconsistency. It's a shame too because I really love this idea. With a little more polish, it could work out. As is, it's just a huge chunk of wasted potential.
Raphâs Too Good of a Leader: This is a similar issue to what I've mentioned about Leonardo. Because, again, I love this idea. Raphael, in multiple iterations, complained about how he should be the leader and just as frequently learns why the job rightly belongs to Leo instead. So starting with this role reversal should be a well-executed idea that gives Raph what he wants while eventually giving the fans what they want. And it would be if not for the fact that Raph seems to be too good at his job.
I get it. If Raphael was too incompetent, the turtles would have gotten nothing done, and it would get too tiring too quick as Leonardo constantly proves why he should lead and why Raph should follow. This actually happens from time to time, and it is already tiresom. The issue is that the intention was to make Leonardo the leader in the end. So why spend so much time showing how Raphael is capable at the job and barely any time showing why Leonardo is a better fit? There are even times when Raphael seems like he really is a better leader than Leo, which I feel as though it is contradictory to the point the writers are trying to get across. In the end, it's nothing more than another really great idea met with insanely poor execution.
Master Splinter (Early Season One): ...Did anybody like this version of Master Splinter in the first half of season one? Because this character was atrocious, especially compared to the previous Splinter from TMNT (2012). We went from what is easily the best interpretation of the character to what was, at the time, the worst. He was lazy, selfish, and emotionally distant with his sons to the point where he only acknowledges them by the color of their bandannas. I understand that the writers needed a more comedic version of the character due to leaning extra hard into comedy, but I don't think I laughed once with his antics in the first half of season one. Thankfully, he's been gifted with a softcore reboot during the second half and onward. This Splinter is awesome, serious, he works well as a straight man, and he has a backstory that's easy to follow while still being kind of heartbreaking. It's a tremendous improvement from what we've been given, but it still doesn't change how downright painful he initially was. I won't complain about the results, but I do have the right to complain about what we got beforehand.
Characters are Inconsistent: A common complaint you'll hear about Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is that the main characters are the same. That's not true because there are definite differences that separate each one apart from the other...the issue is that the writers are not consistent with those changes. I've touched upon it with Leo, but the truth is, everyone in the main cast suffers from inconsistency with their personalities. If Raph is supposed to be the meathead with a good heart, why are there times when he acts like the smart one who occasionally enjoys violence? If April is supposed to be as wild and carefree as the rest of the guys, why are there episodes where she seems to be the sane one? If Mikey is supposed to be kind yet somewhat stupid, why are there episodes where he's selfish and more intelligent than Leonardo? Even Donatello, who is the most consistent out of the whole cast, still suffers through moments when he isn't as clever and cynical as he usually is. These inconsistencies are annoying, and at times, it feels like their personalities are dependent on what the writers need for a joke or for the episode. Characters are the most essential aspect of any story for any medium. If audiences don't care about the characters, they'll find it hard to care about anything else. And how can we care about anyone if we're not one hundred percent sure what their personalities are in the first place?
The Pacing: I sort of expected this when it was announced that this reboot was swapping the franchise's usual half-hour runtime for a ten-minute one, but in all honesty, it isn't that bad. It is slightly fast at times, but that's just as quick to get used to. However, there is one strange phenomenon about this show that I can't let go of.
You see, this series somehow has worse pacing with extended episodes and specials than it does with its usual ten minutes. I don't know how this is possible either. Because despite having as much time as the writers want to establish each plot point, it still feels like they fly through them a little too fast than they regularly would. It makes no sense, but it's constant in every extended episode, especially the series finale (which, to be fair, is partially Nickelodeon's fault. AGAIN!). So keep that in mind when watching.
The Characters Are TOO Overpowered: It feels weird complaining about this. Because making the characters capable of doing anything and surviving much more leads to some of the most epic action sequences in animation history, not just the series or the TMNT franchise as a whole. Despite that, though, there is one crucial thing that is always missing from those fight scenes anyways: Tension.
To fully explain why tension is required in action, I'll have to use Samurai Jack as an example. You see, the titular character can, at times, be just as invincible as these versions of the Turtles and survive even worse. But regardless of him being victorious after nearly every episode, no matter how high the deck is stacked against him, there was always a sense that he fought hard, literally and figuratively, for those victories in the first place. Jack losing articles of clothing or getting cut up gives the illusion that he might not win in the end. He still does, and he always does, but showing the audience that he can and will get hurt makes seeing that victory feel earned. The only times the Turtles, April, or Splinter get hurt is either for comedic slapstick or because the story says so. This is why I consider Shredder destroying the lair is the best fight scene in the entire series. The second he starts destroying their weapons, it gives the tension required to believe maybe, just maybe, not everyone will make it out alive this time. Because if the characters aren't careful, they will face intense consequences as a result. Thus making an adrenaline-pounding moment in the process. Unfortunately, this is the one and only fight scene where that happens. Every action set piece is still epic, don't get me wrong. But there's a reason why writers make even Superman seem less invincible than typical in a fight.
Baron Draxum: THIS is the biggest issue that I have with the series.
As a villain, I didn't give a s**t about Baron Draxum. He was a dull antagonist with a generic evil plot, but other than that, he was perfectly serviceable for a series like this. Even getting a few chuckles now and again...but then the writers decided to make him REDEEMABLE!?
This guy?
The maniac who wanted to commit genocide on human beings, all because of insufficient proof that they'll do it to his species first?
Didn't we already learn how that's awful reasoning after Steven Universe?
Actually, that's not fair...because Steven Universe has a better explanation behind wanting to redeem the Diamonds than Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles does about Baron Draxum! And I'm not kidding! For Steven Universe, the characters believe that it's better to end things peacefully than killing anyone, even if they're the worst criminals. It's a flawed mentality, sure, but it's one you can grasp and understand. What's the reason for redeeming Baron Draxum? It's because he's the reason why Splinter and the turtles are a family...F**k all the physical torture Splinter went through on top of the social ostracization he experienced because of it. No, no, it totally validates the decision to forgive and forget...Oh, wait, no, it doesn't. BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE INSANE!
Who in the f**k honest to goodness thought that would be a good idea? I'm all for finding silver linings in a bad situation, but that is just flat-out lunacy! Because it's the equivalent of saying, "Yeah, this person was a complete a-hole, but they're still the a-hole that made you who you are today." But that is a very dangerous lesson to preach to kids. Because here's the--Hey *snaps fingers* Here's the thing: If a person treats you like garbage, you don't owe them anything for who you are. It's one thing if a person inspired you or cheered you on, but if someone basically ruined your life and physically harmed you and others, don't forgive them. They don't deserve it. âCause f**k Baron Draxum. And whoever thought this was a good idea, you seriously need some help.
Man, is this how it feels to be Lily Orchard? IT SUCKS!
IN CONCLUSION
And that's what I think about Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.Â
It's a fantastic series! I just like everything except for the execution of ideas, most of the characters, and the overall pacing of it...that means it's not a good series, is it?
Yeah, it's a real shame that I don't like this. Because I want to. I really want to. The pieces are there, and I can see how this could be a great and memorable version of a series I loved since I was a tater-tot myself. But I don't. I'm sorry, but I just don't consider this to be an A+ series. It's a solid C, for sure, because it's mostly just style with very little substance. I still respect the amount of effort everyone put into this reboot, but for me, it just never had its chance to fully rise to the occasion.

The 100 rewatch: 5x05 Shifting Sands
After four really strong episodes at the beginning of season 5, this is a slower episode focused on developing the new dynamics. This episode is by no means bad, and there are some lovely character moments in it - but this is, unfortunately, where the plot starts getting kind of boring. Itâs the start of many subplots that, either intentionally or unintentionally, ended up not mattering much for the overall story.
Some of the subplots introduced:
the mutant worms - Iâm not a fan of this subplot, which the show will literally chuck out 5 episodes later. Also, itâs gross. I donât like to have to actually avert my eyes from the screen. The show was really going for the Alien vibe here.
Zaven romance was probably meant to be Ravenâs endgame, but unfortunately, Jordan Bolger got another role and we know what happened. And now all that screentime devoted to the development of their relationship feels like a waste of time, which may be unfair to season 5, but it is what it is. In itself, itâs not the worst romantic subplot by any means, but itâs another rushed romance.
It seemed like the show was going somewhere with the friendship between Diyoza and Kane (with some flirty moments that could have at least suggested even more) - donât get me wrong, I was very much against it being a ship (not a fan of Stockholm Syndrome romances, and Kabby is one of the very few well developed romantic relationships on the show), but every relationship involving Kane got pushed aside when Henry Ian Cusick decided to leave the show. In S6, only Kabby and his friendship with Indra were addressed. On the other hand, itâs always itâs nice to get more Diyoza backstory, which we get when she tells her story to Kane: her suicide attempt - when marines who used to be her own team came to arrest her and after they killed her father.Â
Both Diyozaâs shock collars and Vinson are introduced. Vinson is a very unusual character for The 100 - which is full of leaders, warriors and cult leaders, but which doesnât usually feature cannibal serial killers. I have to say that I quite liked where they went with this character - he was like an embodiment of Abbyâs demons (addiction, cannibalism during the Dark Year) and the demons that almost destroyed the Kabby relationship.
The last scene sets up the main plot of the next episode, which is Octavia and Bellamy arguing about Echo⊠Not the best subplot out there.
In Eden, Diyoza shows again that she may be ruthless but sheâs smart - she is against waging war in Eden and potentially destroying the only habitable land on Earth. Not such good news: she wants to use missiles on Wonkru, which makes sense - especially since they are, from her POV, a bunch of dangerous fanatics. (Actually, they are a bunch of dangerous fanatics, period.)She is aware that the rest of Spacekru are still somewhere in the woods, as is Madi (since she knew 5 of them were almost captured by her people, when Madi saved them). The rivalry between her and McCreary is highlighted again - and we also learn about their history. (Which is going to be important because of a certain reveal that will be coming soonâŠ) I guess Diyoza was more honest than McCreary knew when she dismissed his sexual prowess as âthat was torture, tooâ - since we learn in S7 that she had sex with him to get him to be on her side in the rebellion.
Diyozaâs choice of sex partners may not be the best, but she has good taste in music and hates speed metal or trash metal or whatever that was just as much as I do. âPlay something with a beatâ - exactly!
Kane in the meantime offers intel on Octavia in exchange for a guarantee of protecting Raven and Murphy, but his other reason is that he thinks Octavia will get all of Wonkru killed and wants to stop her.
And we get more of McCreary torturing someone, this time Raven and Murphy. McCreary torturing various people is a recurring thing this season. Is there any episode where he isnât either murdering, torturing or both? I guess no one has told him that torture is not an efficient or reliable way of extracting information⊠but itâs quite possible he doesnât care. Shaw gets to be reluctantly present during someoneâs torture again - not a great way to get to know your future girlfriend. The fact that sheâs in pain and tortured for who-knows-which-time may be why Raven is showing her judgmental streak again, this time dissing Shaw for lying about the fact he was the one who disabled the missiles and accusing him of getting them tortured to save his ass, which is technically true but ignores the facts that 1) he saved hundreds of Wonkru, 2) he saved Ravenâs and Murphyâs lives, and 3) admitting the truth wouldnât have helped anyone. But Raven also shows her smarts and comes up with a good plan how to get Murphy out so he can inform others about the missiles - and does some really good acting when she pretends sheâs furious with Shaw.
One of the highlights of the episode is Murphy meeting Madi for the first time (âhobbitâ as he refers to her), as everyone is in the Rover that Madi is driving. Murphy is not happy when Madi says she thought he would be funnier, and even less so when she says Octavia is her favorite. (Itâs OK, Murphy, Hope and Jordan (during his rebellious phase) will love you.)
Contrary to what youâll often hear in the fandom, Spacekru have been, in these early episodes, talking repeatedly about the fact that Clarke saved them and thanking her. They mentioned it all by themselves in 5x03. Bellamy told Clarke âClarke, you saved us all!â in 5x04 and Raven tearfully thanked her for saving their lives. And now Echo tells Madi they wouldnât have made it without Clarke, and Harper confirms it.
When Murphy realizes that his shock collar/tracker can be used as a bomb, he tells the others to leave him and save themselves and go warn Bellamy - which , I believe, is the first time that Murphy has been really unselfish and unconcerned with saving his own life. Emori has, up to that point, been hostile to him, accusing him of selfishness (she even jumped to the conclusion that he left Raven to die to save himself). But the moment he says this, you can see her face and her whole attitude changing. She says nothing, just staring at him - and then stays with him instead of going with the others. (Murphy will again be unselfish and ask others to leave him to save thrmselves in the season 5 finale, and Emori will refuse to leave him.)
âŠâŠâŠ..
In Polis, there are more reunions: Clarke gets to interact with Jackson and Miller. Jackson tells her they could have used her in the bunker (Clarke replies that they had her mom, and Jacksonâs silence hints that something is wrong, but sheâll only find out what much later). This is an interesting âWhat ifâ - what if Clarke and/or Bellamy had been in the bunker? How would that have affected everything - Octavia and Abby, above all? Indra later tells Bellamy that Octavia needs him. She is clearly not one of those who drank Kool-Aid and hopes for Bellamy to be a good influence on her, the way she obviously wishes she could be, but Octavia is not listening to her. Cooper, on the other hand, is Octaviaâs yes-woman and clearly encourages her worst behavior. Miller still seems somewhere in between at this point - unlike Jackson, he tells Clarke not to get involved, but then changes his mind and tells Blodreina that Clarke has something to tell her.
(This is also a rare occasion: an actual Mackson kiss.)
Clarke and Bellamy are starting to realize that Octavia is pretty scary now, starting with the way her cult worships her and turns against anyone daring to criticize or question her, and then with the way Octavia herself has changed. The episode does a good job of showing that she has been losing her grip on reality, and apparently drinking her own Kool-Aid a bit too much. She is obsessed what she sees as her messianic role pf delivering her people to Eden, and trying to get her people through the desert during the sandstorm, contrary to the advice of Clarke, who actually knows the terrain, (Maybe sheâs taken it too much to heart to continue Jahaâs legacy.) Some of the things Octavia says in this episode:
âThe wind hasnât met Wonkruâ - many people mock it as one of the worst lines in the show, but I like it, I think itâs intentionally hilarious, one of the few funny moments this season - and meant to show what ridiculous things Octavia says when sheâs boasting in front of Wonkru. All the Wonkru members fully accept it while only Bellamy and Clarke are looking at her with WTF? faces.
She also says âWonkru doesnât retreatâ And then orders retreat at the end of the episode. Sheâs not fully delusional.
âThat valley is (our home) and weâre taking it backâ - Back? When did she/they have it exactly? I guess she may just be considering everything that any of the clans had/where they lived as belonging to Wonkru⊠but sheâs never even been there
âThanks to you, weâre at warâ to Bellamy again (would it have been better to stay locked in the bunker forever?)
âYou donât understand because youâre not one of usâ
and finally, she straight up threatens her brother if he keeps questioning her.
During a meal by the campfire at night, while Wonkru are chanting âAll of me for all of usâ, we find out that Octavia is trying to live by the âLove is weaknessâ maxim, which is here retconed as something that all Flamekeepers teach all Commanders (and that Gaia is teaching her now, accordingly), rather than just a Titus/Lexa thing, as it seemed in season 3. (Which in itself was a retcon, since it first seemed in season 2 that it was just something Lexa came up with as a result of her tragic experience with losing her lover Costia.) And yes, itâs love in general, not just romantic love. âLove no one, and no one can hurt youâ, says Octavia, and she clearly includes her brother in that. Indra rejects that and replies with âI love youâ, asking if that makes her weak. This is a recurring theme in the show: Clarke and Octavia have both gone through âLove is weaknessâ phase. (And now in season 7, itâs time for Bellamy - only this time, this idea came to him in the form âlove is selfishâ, and that he should love all mankind rather than focus on love for individual people.)
Clarke finds something âbeautifulâ and impressive in Wonkruâs unity - maybe because she has been alone for so long. The long isolation has changed her - she seems less assertive when sheâs around others, although, to be fair, it doesnât help that sheâs not in the position to be a part of the leadership while they are around Wonkru. But sheâs also shy and vulnerable when Bellamy - after telling her how amazing she was for surviving so long on her own - tries to make her talk about that time. She starts saying âWell, I wasnât aloneâ - and if she immediately answered âI had Madiâ, that would be nothing strange, but the way Clarke makes a long awkward pause and seems to catch herself, before saying âI had Madiâ, and then quickly leaves, almost as if running away - suggest that maybe she was, for a moment, thinking and going to say something else - something about radio calls that allowed her to keep her sanity. Subsequent events have certainly supported this interpretation - we will learn in 5x13 that Clarke has been keeping it a secret from Bellamy (when Madi tells him, she says âI probably shouldnât be telling you thisâ), and when Bellamy finally reveals in 6x01 that he knows about them, Clarke is again very shy and embarrassed and almost runs away from the conversation.
But at this point, Bellamy doesnât know any of that, and I donât think he understands Clarkeâs state of mind. To him, it must seem like sheâs withdrawing into herself.Â
Later on, the two of them get another moment, and this time itâs Clarkeâs turn to tell Bellamy how awesome he is. She praises him for not killing the prisoners in cryo and for saving her, and says âthe Heart and the Headâ - recalling their conversation from over 6 years ago,. in 4x13, when she told him to use his head and not just his heart. Sheâs saying that heâs using both his heart and his head now. Bellamy repeats âThe Heart and the Headâ, and I believe thatâs the first time theyâve said that phrase to each other. Now they have another canon catchphrase to describe their relationship, in addition to âTogetherâ. (They will say it again - a little different - in 6x10: âThe Head and the Heartâ.) Clarke then asks Bellamy âWhat does your head say about fighting a war (etc.)â and he replies âSame as yoursâ. Which is just crying for a callback to happen in the final season. Will we get Bellamy and Clarke saying âWhat does your heart sayâŠâ?
Clarke - in a rare moment of medically treating someone (something she did a lot in season 1, but rarely after that), saves Octaviaâs life from the worms. And - in one of her better moments in this episode - Octavia thanks for her saving her life. Sadly, their relationship is not going to be that harmonious in the rest of S5.
And at the end of this episode - more reunions! The rover comes with Madi, Monty, Harper and Echo, with three memorable reunion moments:
I love the moment when Monty greets Octavia (he still has no idea how much she has changed) and she greets him back with the most awkward smile ever. Itâs like she isnât sure if she can be Octavia now that sheâs Blodreina but sheâs acting like her old self for a moment with an old friend who has no idea what sheâs like now.Â
And this is just moments after she has threatened her brother. This camerawork in this episode is quite interesting - the way it plays with focus. When Octavia threatens Bellamy, while Clarke looks at them, concerned, we have Octavia/Bellamy in focus and Clarke out of it, and then the reverse.
And then in the reunion scene at the end, after we see Clarke and Madi running into each otherâs arms for a big hug, and then we also see Echo and Bellamy running towards each other - itâs interesting and very telling that. as we see Clarke and Madi hugging and Bellamy and Echo kissing, in the same frame, the Becho kiss is out of focus throughout, while the camera zooms on Clarkeâs reaction. While the first Becho kiss we saw (in 5x01) served the purpose to reveal the relationship to the audience, this time, the kiss is there just for Clarkeâs and Octaviaâs reactions to it, and this frame screams - what matters here is Clarke finding out about Becho.
Does this look familiar? Oh yes, we saw the same kind of scene and the exact same facial expression from Clarke in 1x05 when she learned that Finn had a girlfriend.
(But in case you ignored this moment, since itâs subtle - the dramatic music only starts with Octaviaâs reaction to seeing her brother with her old enemy, which is the cliffhanger - donât worry, youâll get another scene of Clarke looking sad while Becho are kissing, in the next episode.)
And hereâs the (melo)dramatic cliffhanger! I guess the audience is supposed to be on Bellamyâs and Echoâs side as Octavia is showing once again she can stare daggers - but I suspect many were on Octaviaâs side on this one, since weâre pretty much in the same boat as Octavia and Clarke -, for us and for them, comes from nowhere, after weâve only known them as enemies. Especially Octavia - Clarke did spend semi-amicable moments with Echo and witness Bellamy spending them just before Praimfaya. Octavia's last memories of Echo are⊠Echo mortally wounding Ilian, Bellamy almost strangling Echo for trying to kill Octavia/cheat them all out of the bunker, and Octavia banishing Echo. and Echo briefly trying to threaten her with telling the other Grounders about the Skaikru rebellion.
Was this really necessary in terms of the conflict between the Blakes? I donât think so. Theyâve already been butting heads over Octaviaâs leadership and actions and her intention to fight a war - but yay, we are getting an episode centered around Octavia objecting to Bellamyâs girlfriend, which will ultimately go nowhere and matter little in terms of overall Bellamy/Octavia relationship this season.
Body count: 12 Wonkru members died: Obika died a horrible death from mutant worms. (His death will haunt Miller, who was with him when he was attacked by the worm, during the red sun eclipse in 6x02, when Miller hallucinated having bugs inside of him and yelled he would end up the same as Obika.) 11 other Wonkru members died from Diyozaâs missile, which means there are 801 left.
Rating: 6/10

Supernatural season 4 review (part 2)
Link to part 1:
Irene and I have finished season 4, finally, and I was surprised I still liked it like the first time I've watched it. I couldn't wait to get there (who knows why?) and I was actually afraid I wouldn't get as excited as I thought I would; but fortunately it still gives me the idea that it is one of the best Supernatural seasons.
It all starts with Dean coming back from hell and being clueless about how he did it. He soon finds out the Angel Of The Lord Castiel held him tight and raised him from perdition and that he has a fundamental role in the intent to stop Lilith's plans to free Lucifer from his cage and unleash the Apocalypse.
Will this review (and probably the next 11 ones) most likely be a little bit biased for Destiel? Definitely. Will I try to stay as objective as I can? Yes, but this doesn't mean I'll be very objective, after all I'm writing this review knowing what is going to happen in the next seasons (and, more precisely, in the scene, you know which one I'm talking about).
I honestly don't even know where to start, so I'm going to comment on what I think is important as the season goes on.
I believe 04x01 is one of the best episodes of this season (and maybe even one of my favourite episodes ever) for several reasons. We have Dean coming back from hell and meeting again with Bobby and Sam (and both of these moments are very touching, especially Sam's one). Although the reunion might be heartwarming, Sam is already keeping secrets from Dean: he is collaborating with Ruby to defeat Lilith (and in the meantime he's using his powers, which are stronger than ever, cause he's drinking demon blood to increase them). He lies to Dean, telling him he stopped trying to use his abilities against the enemy, and that causes the biggest drama between the two brothers this season (that will continue on the next one). Dean (and the others) wants to find out who's trying to contact him and who brought him back from hell: I love the way Castiel is slowly introduced during this episode. At first with the ultrasounds and the handprint (which is definitely a fantastic touch, that kinda shows a little possessive side if you think about it, and it is inevitably funny if you know everything that happens later on), then through Pamela, showing already all his power, and at the end of the episode there's a "dramatic" moment where Dean (and Bobby) finally meets Castiel (in his vessel) for the first time, and this might be one of the most epic and iconic scenes in Supernatural. The dynamic between these two is fantastic from the beginning (am I saying this because I'm totally biased?) and the line "What's the matter? You don't think you deserve to be saved?" shows how Castiel has already understood Dean Winchester from just a look (and he's an angel who's not supposed to feel or understand feelings! Wow, the power of Destiel).
Moving on from this episode, in the second one we find out from Castiel that Lilith wants to break the 66 seals, foretelling the Apocalypse, in order to free Lucifer. On a side note, I like how bitchy Castiel is towards Dean at the beginning of their relationship ("Read the Bible. Angels are warriors of God. I'm a soldier", "You should show me some respect, I dragged you out of hell, I can throw you back in").
I love episode 04x03 because I usually adore time travel (it often leads to some funny and very unusual situations) and I find this one extremely sad and touching, mostly because Dean has the opportunity to meet his parents when they are still young (and Mary and John's sides he didn't know about) and finds out how their family became cursed (and the worst thing is he can't change its destiny).
In episode 04x04 Dean finds out Sam has been working with Ruby this whole time and gets mad about it, which is pretty reasonable. As much as a part of me hates when Sam and Dean fight, another part of me loves it, especially in this season, and it's probably because I think both of them are right and wrong at the same time. Ruby seems reliable (for now much more than the angels) and Sam truly did some good with her, so it is logical for Sam to trust her, since she apparently hasn't done anything against him and she has also saved him (which Sam confesses to Dean on episode 04x09). On the other hand I understand why Dean wouldn't want his brother to continue his process of strengthening his powers: he's afraid Sam won't be the same. Plus his brother lied to him, so it becomes hard for Dean to trust him, and this episode marks a pretty sad change in their relationship that will only get worse later in the season.
I should also mention 04x07 in which two witches want to bring Samhain, a celtic god, back from the dead. By doing that another of the 66 seals would be broken so Dean and Sam, who were working on the case, are told by Castiel and Uriel (another angel) that Uriel has to destroy the city, since the two brothers can't stop the witches from bringing Samhain back. Dean wants to prevent Uriel from doing a massacre and convince Castiel to wait for a few hours and let them take care of the witches. They can't stop them and Sam confronts Samhain using his powers, although he promised Dean he wouldn't use them anymore. At the end of the episode Castiel confesses to Dean that his orders were to follow Dean's instructions and admits he has doubts towards God. I consider this conversation very important, since this is the first time Castiel lets Dean have a look at his inner thoughts, even if Castiel himself is afraid of them, which gets me thinking that he already trusts Dean.
I also wanted to point out that Dean starts calling Castiel "Cas" pretty soon, even if he doesnât want to trust him yet (although I believe he already does unconsciously). And what's even funnier is that, by calling him "Cas", he removes from his name the part that means "of God", which kinda gives you already an idea of what it's going to happen to him.
In episode 04x09 we meet Anna, a fallen angel, who doesn't even remember she has ever been one, since now she's human and has lived a human life for years. Dean and Sam meet her because she seems to be capable of getting in contact with the angels and is suddenly wanted from both angels (who want her death because she rebelled from heaven) and demons (one of them is Alastair, who knows Dean from hell). Anna and Dean form a sort of bond and she tells him she fell from heaven because she fell in love with humanity (they also have sex in the Impala, but that's way less relevant, although I want to point out that she covers Castiel's mark on Dean's shoulder with her hand, which is a bit disturbing). They can't stop the angels from coming for her so when they arrive we see a beautiful totally not programmed and still hilarious scene of Dean and Anna kissing and Castiel looking at first intensively at them and then shamefully at the ground. I mean, what was that? I understand that Anna and Castiel are sort of parallels, because they are both two angels falling from humanity (they also talk about feelings and Castiel confesses he has already started having emotions), but isn't it the whole point of Destiel? An angel that falls in love with humanity because of one man (Dean, if that wasn't already obvious)? And we get this concept involuntarily since season four? That's⊠funny. Apart from all of that, Anna manages to get her grace back and hides from Castiel and Uriel.
Another important element in this episode, and in the whole season, is Dean's experience in hell, in which time works differently (four months equivalent to forty years). He finally tells Sam what it has been like and totally breaks down as he says he has spent thirty years being tortured and, since he couldn't resist anymore, the ten left torturing other souls. He also adds in the next episode, with shame, that in torturing souls he felt pleasure, because all the pain felt as a victim disappeared: this is what devastated him the most. I feel like Dean's time in hell inevitably shaped his personality a lot in this season, but it's a thing that changes him forever. He is more mature and somehow self-aware (and I love this aspect), but he's also way more desperate and hopeless (a trade I think characterises Dean way more than Sam in every season, but that's definitely more persistent in this one than it's ever been). I might be a bit sadistic, but I don't mind the bad parts Dean has kept from hell either: they show us a vulnerable side that Dean has always tried to hide. There's also the evident contraposition between Sam's physical power and apparent strong state of mind and Dean's unstable, weak and soft one (also relative to what Dean's big role is in this season and what Sam is actually capable of doing to prevent the apocalypse).
I'd talk about episode 04x14 just to mention the fact that the siren (who's supposed to turn into the person who should most sexually attract his victim) decides to show himself to Dean as a man. I get he was supposed to replace Sam's role as a brother, but the whole setting, the fact that sirens' attractiveness is usually sexual and the fact that even the actor who played the siren admitted the whole scene was a bit sensual should tell us something (it also seems funny that they had to precise multiple times he was trying to be his brother because otherwise that would have seemed too gay, it still seems gay, but whatever).
In episode 04x16 someone is killing the angels and Castiel asks Dean for help to find out who the killer is. The angels have the demon Alastair captured and Castiel tells Dean he's the only one who can torture him. The angel seems to be really upset about it, because he knows how this could hurt Dean, since this is what he has been doing for the past ten years in hell. Dean decides to do it anyway and he finds out from Alastair, during the torture, that he is the one who has broken the first seal (by deciding to torture souls) and made the first step to bring Lucifer back. This obviously breaks Dean even more, since he already hates what he has done in hell, and makes him believe he's not capable of doing what the angels want from him (and he admits it to Castiel, and in the next episode his superior Zacharia tries to convince Dean he's the right man by showing him that even in other realities he would end up killing monsters). We later find out that the one who killed the angels was Uriel that, hating humans, was on Lucifer's side. He asks Castiel to join him but he refuses and Anna, saving Castiel from a fight with Uriel, kills him. I don't have much thoughts on Uriel, I didn't like him even when he was supposedly on the good side. The only thing I like about him is that he had already acknowledged the fact that Castiel likes Dean (who would've thought?).
I have to mention episode 04x18 as I think is one of my favourites of the season and that starts a series of other fantastic episodes (and basically another reality). Sam and Dean find out their life has been written (and published) by Chuck, who's apparently a prophet of God (and turns out to be quite useful later on). This is one of my favourite things Supernatural likes to do: metanarrative. In my opinion it really brings out something new and extremely funny (especially since I know this won't be the last time the two brothers will have to deal with Supernatural).
Another important episode is 04x19, where Sam and Dean find out they have a stepbrother, Adam, who doesn't know about their dad's secret life of hunting. It's obvious the most hurt by the situation is Dean, who would have never thought John could lie about something like that and who's somehow jealous of Adam, since he had the opportunity to live a normal life that could have been possible for him and Sam as well. The one thing that surprised me was that he didn't want him to learn how to hunt (unlike Sam, who thought it could be a good idea for Adam to know how to protect himself). I think Dean shows how he has changed throughout the years and now believes that, since the kid had the opportunity to live a normal life, he doesn't want him to experience what they have. He's more mature and he has become way better than his father and it's funny how now Sam is the one who thinks more like John (although I think there is still a relevant difference between the two of them, fortunately). We eventually find out that it wasn't Adam, but the monster they were fighting, and that Adam is already dead: at first I was a little bit surprised because I remembered that Adam would be in the next season, but it's Supernatural, so I should be used to it by now.
The next episode is important especially for showing us sides of Castiel's life that were not entirely clear before: in this case we find out how the angel reached out his vessel, Jimmy Novak. As much as I can see why Castiel had to occupy Jimmy's body, it's totally understandable that the man wants to go back to his life and that he doesn't want anything more to do with Castiel and everything about him. I also understand that he doesn't want to be with the Winchesters, although objectively they are right to want to keep him away from his family. In general the situation is definitely complicated and, from Jimmy's point of view, quite tragic. We can also tell Castiel, as much as he is already more empathic than the other angels, is not human and can't quite think like one, even if he has Dean who shows him his perspective. Knowing everything that happens to him later on makes me understand how much he has changed throughout the seasons (and knowing who has made that change possible warms my heart). It was quite strange to see Castiel acting like this since at this point I'm used to the Castiel in the latest seasons, but overall I like him a lot in the earlier ones as well.
At this point of the season, drinking demon blood for Sam has become like a drug and Dean can't continue to let his brother ruin himself like that, so with Bobby he decides to lock him in Bobby's panic room. I understand Dean is scared of what Sam could become and is becoming, but at this point Sam is at a level so high that he can't make it without demon blood, and staying for a long time without it could really hurt him further. It also seems that Sam is the only solution to kill Lilith and end the arrival of the Apocalypse. Of course Dean continues to argue that it's best to exclude Sam from this matter given his status, but Sam runs away and tracks down Ruby, with whom he's been working all season trying to be as discreet as possible so as not to worry Dean.
Sam's series of lies, the concern that he might become a monster, and the close collaboration with Ruby increase Dean's anger and disappointment with his brother throughout the season. He no longer trusts him and this deeply saddens both Sam and Dean himself, because he realizes that something has broken between them by now. As much as Sam may have his good reasons for wanting to work with Ruby (and he has), I think he's handled this situation in the worst possible way and that Dean is right about not trusting him anymore (or maybe I'm just a little conditioned by my love for Dean).
I think another reason that has increased the anger towards Sam is the fact that he has repeatedly admitted that he has been decidedly stronger than Dean since he was in hell. It's probably something they both agree on, but Dean is used to considering himself weak and not strong enough to sustain a certain situation. The thing that saddens Dean the most is the fact that his brother thinks so too.
However, this conflict ends with a fight between the two after Dean is able to find his brother. As much as I'm on Dean's side, I hated it when he called Sam a monster, because he knows that's the biggest fear that haunts his brother and calling it like that must have really destroyed him. After the fight everyone goes for his path: Sam with Ruby and Dean, finally convinced by Castiel, with the angels.
Shortly after, however, he discovers that his real role is not to stop the Apocalypse but to stop Lucifer, because he will be Micheal's vessel, and that when Lilith is killed the last seal will be broken, giving way to the Apocalypse. Dean disagrees with the angels and tries to convince Castiel to side with him and abandon the angels to try to stop the Apocalypse.
The twist itself is well constructed, although in my opinion, to make it even better, they could have shown angels as decidedly more reliable creatures, and then break all our trust (and with it also Dean's hopes). During the end of the season, apart from Castiel, the most reliable one seems to be Ruby. And that's why I think this is a much better twist: Sam completely relied on the demon, who always proved to be there for him, and to kill Lilith seems like the most logical move to make to prevent Lucifer from resurrecting. Even when I knew Ruby was cheating Sam the dynamic seemed so unexpected to me that I didn't even remember how she would do it. On top of that Sam's willingness to kill Lilith (mostly for revenge) and to stop the rise of Lucifer is actually what permits Lucifer to rise. So I can only imagine how guilty Sam felt after he realized what he had done (and the worst but best thing at the same time is that it's not even his fault, not entirely at least). Eventually the two brothers open and close the circle of the Apocalypse's arrival, which adds a touch of perfection to the whole situation.
Dean, after convincing Castiel to side with him, goes to Chuck to find where Lilith, Ruby and Sam are. Castiel transports Dean to Sam and tries to stop the angels who want the Apocalypse to begin, losing his life. This is another great step Castiel takes for Dean against his own brothers, proving that he now considers himself at Dean's side more than any other person's side. Dean arrives too late to stop Sam, who has already killed Lilith, and the fourth season ends with a confused and desperate Sam, an angry and desperate Dean, and Lucifer returning.
In the end I believe that this is the best season of Supernatural so far for several reasons: the arrival of Castiel who adds new aspects both to the Supernatural universe (talking about angels) and to the character of Dean (and later also to that of Sam), the continuous struggle between the two brothers, Ruby's character (which I think has been made quite effectively and which has also improved this season, as well as her relationship with Sam), the plot twist and the change that hell caused in Dean.
Usually this is considered one of the best seasons of Supernatural, and I completely agree, but having seen the series with long time gaps I feel I'll be able to judge only at the end of the fifteenth if this (and the fifth) are actually the best seasons of Supernatural, at least for me.

okay, bear with me?? i saw this post and itâs been a downward spiral for the last four days or so? so, yeah -- weâre doing this.
being married was a mistake, and this wasnât a statement youâd come out of nowhere with.Â
youâd been able to brew over the idea for months -- long months without much entertainment except for the evening news and a few neighborâs potlucks. there had been plenty of embroidery sections against the sound of radio soap operas and the sensation of pricked thumbs, as well as a couple of walks through the park close to the house and cul de sac you lived in. and in all of these moments, you brewed over the same fact: marrying your high school âsweetheartâ had been the worst choice of your life and you didnât know how to get out of it.Â
there had been a few times you contemplated running away. if you moved to a city like new york or los angeles, nobody would know you; you could do everything all over again and with the hindsight few were allowed.Â
but then you were brought back to reality with the notion that by running away, you might make the situation worse for everyone. the scandal it would cause your parents? could you ever come back home? a loveless marriage didnât seem nearly as bad as those outcomes, even if it meant more solitary time in a home that felt more like a prison.Â
with a husband that spend long weeks and months away from the homestead, selling globes and encyclopedias, you didnât really know a life that involved taking care of another person for more than a couple of weeks at a time. sometimes, you swore that the man you married felt more like a guest in the house than the person whoâs name was on the damned lease.Â
so, as his car peeled away once more and for another trip, and you waved from the doorway, you really thought about trying to escape. again. because you werenât quite sure how many more months away from a social life you could stand.Â
with no children in the mix, and neighbors who seemed too interested in their own lives to come by, you relegated yourself to the continuation of embroidery patterns and trying new cooking techniques.Â
the first snow of the season fell at the beginning of december, when youâd been in the house and on your own for the last thirteen days. you were just taking out a loaf of bread from the oven when a knock came on the door. and it was an odd sound, really, even if it was so trivial in itâs nature. being at the end of the cul de sac, you rarely had visitors and never when your husband wasnât home.Â
but nevertheless, you tossed your oven mitts off to the side of the kitchen and headed to the door. on the way, you scooped up your heels and placed them firmly on your feet -- just to make sure that whoever was on the other side of the door wouldnât see you so indecently.Â
and peaking through the peephole, you found a smiling mailman and a rather large box.Â
unlocking and opening the door, you greeted the man as he explained the delivery. âyouâre y/n y/l/n, correct?â
âi could be,â you jested as he handed the box over. your arms jerked slightly, not expecting the heavy weight of the parcel. the mailman came to help, rushing to move his hands back under the box as support. and you caught his eye for just a second too long, which let you take in the blue irises and the way his right eye seemed just a little uneven from his left. and you wanted to remember it for some reason.Â
you looked away first, eyes scanning the empty streets for someone who saw a moment that didnât exist.Â
he helped you carry it in, setting the large and heavy thing down by the kitchen table. and then he tipped the brim of his hat to you, and headed out the door with a gentle goodbye.Â
and over the course of the next week, you made a habit of greeting the man. and he would always smile and tip his hat, and there was a twinkle of something in his eyes when he did so.Â
by the next week, there had been an interesting development.Â
you werenât dreaming about the mailman.Â
it was easy to tell yourself that the first couple of nights, but then it happened a third time. and a fourth. and by the fifth night, in a lonely bed, you had to accept that these feelings sort of existed. they could never be acted on, of course. but where was the harm in talking to the man?
at first, you just watched him make his way down the street, from the window under the guise of reading. heâd finally come by, and youâd watch him from over the cover of your book as he rifled through his canvas bag and pulled one one to two letters -- just like heâd done with the rest of the residents on the street. and then would come the knocks -- three gentle taps against the wood frame of your door -- that would have you standing up and heading towards the entryway.Â
and as you peeled back the door to see him with a beautiful smile, you couldnât help but smile back. because he just seemed so kind. heâd even small talk with you. which was probably one of the best things about your day; having that little extra human interaction (especially with him) is what made the whole day worth it.Â
he liked the smell of your cooking. he actually told you that one afternoon, when you were just finishing up a pot roast that would feed one for the evening. but, it could feed two, you guessed. âwould you want to come in and try it?â you had asked. Â
bill, which you had learned was his name a few days ago, looked hesitant at first. he glanced between you and the kitchen, and then his empty mail carrier. finally, he shrugged and figured âwhatâs the worst that could happen?â
so, that was how you ended up with bill sitting across from you at a small kitchen table. the dining room wasnât set up -- which bill said he didnât mind. and it was alright, because you secretly liked having him so close. if you just reached out your hand a little more, you could slip a hand into his or at least rope it around his wrist gently. but those were the thoughts that kept you silent as you took another bite of the potatoes youâd prepared.Â
âyour food is delicious,â he said inbetween forkfuls of the cuisine. you smiled bashfully. âif i could cook half as well as you, then i wouldnât need to buy so many t.v. dinners for one.â
you couldnât help but ask, âyouâre not married?â
and he paused. his eyes slowly came up to meet yours, a brow hitched up in an inquisitive manner as he asked, âdid you think i was?â
you guessed not; you just figured someone as kind and attractive as him would have to be married to a lovely girl and spending his weekends taking her on beautiful trips. but, maybe that was you projecting something onto him that didnât need to be spoken of. so instead, you shrugged. âi guess not. i never saw a ring.â
âbut you were looking?â
and you blushed. âiâm too inquisitive for my own good.âÂ
âi donât think so,â he replied.Â
and his smile caused your heart to stop for just a few seconds, because this was something a little more intimate than that wide-toothed grin he gives everyone as he tips his cap.
he gave you the same wonderful smile the next evening, when you invited him in for dinner again.Â
you had never been more happy that your husband picked a home at the end of the cul de sac -- it had meant more isolation and a cheaper price originally. but now, it meant you could have a handsome mailman over for dinner.
and not just once or twice, but enough times for it to be considered a regular occurrence. by the sixth dinner, you offered him a glass of wine. he accepted with only minor disagreement. and into the second glass, he wasnât hesitating at all. he even made sure that you were getting a third glass as you continued a story about the neighbors down the street and their horrid dog -- which bill laughed at.Â
you adored his laugh.Â
and he loved getting one out of you. which was often. because he seemed to have such a natural funny bone, and everything he seemed to say was funnier than the last statement.Â
bill placed his fork back onto the table, another plate cleaned. âiâm going to have to start letting out these pants, y/n. your cooking is too good.â
âi could do that for you, if you needed.â
âi wouldnât expect you to. besides, thereâs no reasons that a, uh, a married woman as kind as you should have to let out anyoneâs pants but their husbands.â
âiâm sure heâd never know.â you tried to wave the thought of the household man away. he hadnât been home in five weeks, and you were starting to think that his postcards were ornamental. maybe heâd never come home.Â
bill sighed. âbut i would. and i couldnât do that to you.â
âeven if i wanted to?â
he paused. his eyes wouldnât come to meet yours; they stayed very still on what seemed like a pointless and printed flower on the tablecloth. ây/n,â he started with heavy caution. âyouâre not talking about the sewing anymore, are you?â
you were about to answer, your mouth opening to try and flounder out a response as he clambered to his feet. âplease donât answer that.âÂ
and then he was gone.Â
the next day, the mail was left in the box outside your door.Â
and the same with the day after that.Â
on the third day, you waited by the window and watched as he filed through his bag quickly and deposited the few letters you had into your mailbox. but then he looked up, and he met your gaze, and nothing needed to be said. because you were still married, and he was too nice of a person and too much of a gentleman to ever do anything. so, it was going to be up to you.

Season 4 episode 2
LatriWhat is up you junkie whores. Whoâs ready to rumble?! Well its for sure not these queens. Before we get too ahead of ourselves lets talk about one of my favorite running gags. I love at the beginning of each episode after a girl has gone home, she is featured in the next episode holding the check for 100,000. Not only is it funny as hell, itâs super petty. Damn I love Rupaul. I wish that this fun little gag was in every season. Itâs such a small thing but I think itâs very effective and so hilarious.Â
Before any real fun happens we see the queens fill the required screen time with what seems to be super casual and not at all produced conversations. Jiggly wipes away Alisaâs lipstick message and everyone agrees that Jiggly should have been gone instead. I can never tell if theyâre joking or being genuine, but to me it really does seem like they wish Jiggly had gone home.
Lashauwn talks with Latrice about the outcome of last week. Everyone though that Lashauwn was going to win last weeks challenge but she agrees that she didnt win because sheâs too quiet. Duh sheâs too quiet. Nobody likes a quiet drag week damnit.
Moving to the mini challenge, it is once again something ridiculous. The girls have to make pads, get into quick drag, then strut their stuff through the workroom. As expected, most of the girls look like shit and some think theyâre funnier than they actually are. Madame LaQueer canât even seem to get her damn pants up. Jiggly splits her pants right up the crack. Fun fact tho: This challenge was responsible for giving us the iconic Willam look that become sort of her symbol.Â
Phi Phi, Willam and Chad had the juiciest booties they win the challenge and become team captains. I was not surprised that Latrice was picked first. Like she said, shes a big bitch so whoâs gonna out wrestle her. I was not surprised that Madame LaQueer was chosen last and I sure as hell was not surprised when she said that she was not athletic. Bitch no one is surprised. Your pants fell down and you were sweaty from walking. Girl bye
Anyways, the teams were as followed: Phi Phi, Lashauwn, Latrice and Kenya; Willam, Jiggly, the Princess, and Dida; Chad, Sharon, LaQueer, and Milan. On each team there are a pair of âgoodâ guys vs. a pair of âbadâ guys. Each pair has really stupid names so I shan't be getting into those. Google if you're curious.Â
After that they get into their teams and practice for the big matches. During practice Madame LaQueer hurts her ankle, insert eyeroll, and that makes Team Chad very nervous. Lashauwn is nervous because sheâs quiet and wresting is not for quiet people. The Princess is also quiet but her main problem is that Jiggly is crude and obscene. So basically, each team has one weak link so that no team has any advantages.
Each wrestling match starts out with one pair of wrestlers (queens) in their dressing room and then the pair theyâre facing off against with flexes on them and talks shit then they take it to the ring. Overall itâs a pretty dumb challenge. Professional wrestling isnât fun to watch so seeing a bunch f drag queens flounder and act poorly through a wrestling match inst a good time. All three teams do, at least in my opinion, a piss poor job. You can see how fake it is and the outfits are super cheap looking. Nothing really stood out for me in this challenge except fro Lashauwnâs terrible acting and Jigglyâs potty mouth.
Once the wresting is over itâs time for the runway. As theyâre getting ready the queens take this time to talk shit about their performances. Jiggly is worried about the Princess because the Princess wasnât as obnoxious as her. I donât consider that a bad thing.
The theme of the runway is Girly Girl Couture. I donât understand how or why the runway themes are chosen are but they make no sense. Like what does girl girls have to do with wrestling? I donât know but Rupaul thinks they hold hands.
Team Chad wins the challenge for some reason with the overall winners being Chad and LaQueer. If I had to guess why they won, it would be because they had the most fleshed out characters and they really stayed in character. Chad and LaQueer were the most committed bad guys and as a team all four were probably the strongest. LaQueer thinks that this means the other girls will regret picking her last. Think again sis.The queens exit the stage and the real judging starts.
First up is Willam. All the judges thought that Willamâs acting sucks, which is so hilarious to me considering she considers herself to be an actress. Sheâs always boasting about it being her day job, but she canât act for shit. The judges didnât even talk about her runway look, so Iâll take care of that. Itâs trash. She looks like a cheap whore that wondered into the the studio lot. Her shorts are so short that I can see her fucking taint. To me, Willam is not a star.
Dida Ritza is next and as expected, her wig is dehydrated. I donât know why she keeps wearing cheap ass blonde wigs. Put some effort in girl. The judges said that she would be better as the pretty ring girl that hold up the sign and I disagree. She couldnât do that either.
The Princess is next and her look gets mixed reviewed. The judge liked the dress but hated the hair. I hated both. Weâve seen what sheâs capable of and this look was a bit of a let down. The dress makes her look short and fat and the hair looks like a big comb over. He moves in the ring were also not favored. The Princess said that she was a very zen person and was really trying. Well apparently she didnât try hard enough and goes to the bottom. The Princess did not earn the respect that she deserved. The judges and Jiggly did her dirty.
Jiggly is next and her outfit is awful. I hate that she never seem to have a silhouette or a concept. The most interesting thing was the lollipop she had, but you'll soon find that Jiggly always has food on her person and itâs less interesting the more you realize that. Jiggly threw the Princess under the bus for being too quiet and the judges felt that Jiggly was carrying the pair. I disagree. I feel like Jiggly was just obnoxious and annoying and instead of working together she just bulldozed over the Princess. Nobody likes a bully Jiggly.
Phi Phi is next. The judges hate her look because she looked old. Her runway didnât give me girly, it gave me more single mom of three realness, but it wasnât bad. The look wasnât terrible but it for sure didnât match the theme. The judges, especially Michelle, really liked her in the maxi challenge. Phi Phi was pretty funny in the ring. She plays dumb bitch pretty well. If the rest of her team had been better she probably would have won.
Lashauwn is next. I loved her runway look. I thought it was so cute and creative. It was nice to see something that wasnât basic on the runway. Most of the judges liked the look but one of the guests judges hated it. I donât remember his name so he isnât important or relevant. I agree with the judges about her performance. You could see that she out of her element and not really trying in the ring. Her lack of confidence is what lands her in the bottom two.
Kenya Michales is next. I found her runway look to be cute but the judges went bananas over it. They said that she looked like Lil Kim or Niki Minaj which I get. They loved her performance in the ring. I liked her energy but if Latrice wasnât her partner I dont think it would have been as good. They fed off each others energy and were good together. Separately not so much. That one guest judge who I hate said that sheâs the one to beat. Which is so not true. If she was the one to beat she would've won this challenge or even the one from the week before but she did not. Kenya is pretty, but I donât see any talent.
And finally we come to Latrice. Her runway look is my least favorite of the episode. It is so basic and so pedestrian. I think it is ugly and it does not give me girl, but old white lady that Latrice stole this outfit from. The judges didnât even commit on this monstrosity of a look and honestly, they should be ashamed. The judges loved her performance in the ring because she was throwing Kenya around. So like I said for Kenya, they were good together but as individuals they arenât as strong.Â
So once again the queens retreat to the untucked lounge and the judges talk shit and say things we already heard, but this time meaner.Â
It pisses me off that the Princess is in the bottom two but her partner isnât. So instead she faces off against Lashauwn, which is probably a good thing since they both sucked in the lip sync. Both of them gave a pretty lackluster performance. Not that the song they chose was super upbeat or fun. I find Bad Girls by the Donna Summers to be a little boring myself but hey, its not my show. For some reason Lashauwn thought it would be cute to do the whole thing without shoes. Donât ever take your shoes or your wig off during a lip sync. You will go home. So its not shocking that the Princess stayed and Lashawun sashayed away. The Princess wasnât much better, but she kept her shoes on.
So thatâs it for this episode kids. Tune in next week for commercials and RuPaul forcing his music on us

Random questions about your significant other. Yay I love these
What's their name? Yâall know the drill. Her name is Gabie. :) Are you dating, engaged, or married? Weâre dating, because itâs too early to be getting into the other two just yet. How old are they? Sheâs 21. How long have you been together? Itâll be our fourth anniversary next month, but before that we also dated for eight months. When and how did you meet? It was in Grade 7, my friend and her friend were friends, so they introduced us to each other. We were a group of four friends for a while, but Gab and I ended up being the closest so we branched out. I took a liking to her because she was the only one in our batch who seemed to know about the fangirling culture, and I fucked with that lmao. Were you friends before you started dating? Yeah, super. We were each otherâs best friends for a couple of years. She always says Iâm one of the few people who understood her weirdness and quirks and rode along with it, and I can say the same for her with my own quirks. That really helped us become more close with each other.
- Beyond the basics - What did they have for dinner yesterday? We didnât really have dinner. I know she had Chowking late in the afternoon, and then she met up with me in the evening and we had drinks out with friends. Samâs uncle covered the food so we had grilled liempo, spicy hotdog, and isaw which technically was our pulutan, but I guess it counts as dinner too. What car do they drive? Her cars change all the time because of her dadâs business, but right now she alternates between a BMW (not sure which model) and a Toyota Vios. Where would they love to travel to the most? I donât know, she hasnât really expressed this with me. What is their favorite dog breed? She loves all dogs but Iâm pretty sure her favorite breed is golden retriever. Are they more of a dog person or a cat person? Sheâs definitely more of a dog person, but she recently realized that she loooooves cats and that sheâs a cat person as well. What do they do for a living? She doesnât have a full-time job but I know she used to work at her dadâs company doing publicity materials for their social media, photography, working on Photoshop, etc. Not sure if sheâs still doing the gig now since I donât hear much of it from her these days. Have they ever worked two or more jobs at once? She juggled two executive positions in her two orgs a year ago, if that counts. What's their hair style/color? She used to have blonde tips but she chopped them off a few months ago, so now sheâs back to just having her normal, wavy, black hair.  Name some of their favorite foods. Chicken pesto pasta, potato chips, and anything her dad cooks? Iâm not sure about that last one, but generally I never trust her with having âfavoritesâ because hers changes every single day. What would they consider to be their greatest accomplishment? Iâm gonna take a wild guess and say that it was when she scored a 100% scholarship at her present university. The tuition there per year is around P200K but thanks to her hard work and good grades her parents have never had to pay a single cent for her studies. How many cousins do they have? I know she has... a lot but theyâre either too old (almost like her aunts and uncles) or live in the States. Her mom is the youngest among her siblings and all of them were already pretty grown-up when she came around; and her dadâs siblings live in the States, hence most of her cousins living there as well. Where did they go to elementary/primary school? She went to the same school I did. We met in Grade 7, or I think what you guys refer to as ~middle school. What's their highest level of education? Weâre both in university but graduating this year. How many times have they moved? Iâm only aware of the one time she moved, and Iâve also already been to that previous house. If there were any other periods that they moved houses, she hasnât told me about them. (If married/living together) How many times have you two moved together? Do they have a celebrity look-a-like? She told me that her grandmother used to tell her she looked like Brooke Shields when Brooke was younger, but that was many years ago. Nowadays I hype her up cos she shares a resemblance with Gal Gadot, heh. Do they talk in their sleep? Sometimes. Usually it comes out as gibberish mumbles, but there are times sheâd say actual words so for almost four years, Iâve kept a list of all the stuff sheâll say in her sleep. Some of the funnier/more interesting entries include âhot math,â âmy knees are still stuck,â âIâm going to shate,â and simply âmutts.â
Have they ever had braces? Yes. We started wearing braces at around the same time but she had to keep hers on longer than I did. What size shoe do they wear? Her feet can fit in either a size 5 or 6. Do they have a good relationship with their parents? Yes. Iâll sometimes confide in her about how lucky she is and about how I wish we had the same set of parents, especially whenever Iâm upset with mine. Her parents were very busy with work when she was younger so she wasnât able to spend a lot of time with them then, but as time passed they were able to catch up and now she has a healthy relationship with both. At what age did they get their drivers license? 18. What was their first car? She changes her car every few months so sheâs gone through A LOT and itâll be hard for me to remember her first...but Iâm gonna take a wild-ass guess and say her first was either like a blue-green Toyota Corolla or something similar, or a red Honda CRV. What were they wearing the last time you saw them? Plain gray t-shirt and black jeans. What was their first word? No clue. Weâve never talked about this. Are any of their grandparents still living? She has one living grandmother. What sort of books do they like to read? Sheâll read anything I think, but right now sheâs into coming-of-age stuff because of the last book she read. What was the last book they read, or are currently reading? ^ That. HAHAHA she didnât tell me the title or delve too much into the book with me, but yeah it was coming-of-age and she ended up loving it. Do they wear a watch? Sometimes. Most of the time she doesnât. Do they smoke? Yes. For a long time, I told her not to just cos I found it disgusting, but eventually I realized I canât prohibit her from doing what she wants to do the whole time weâre together; so I slowly came to terms with her smoking so I just let her. I donât know if itâll be a habit of hers but I do know she does it socially. Do they drink? Yes. Are they more introverted or more extroverted? Definitely an extrovert; she can jive with anybody. What was their last reason for going to a doctor? She had a bad asthma attack so she needed to have an IV thing pricked on her for a few hours. What are some of their pet peeves? She HATES moochers, like those who ask for free stuff all the time hahaha I know this because we have a friend who shamelessly does this. She also dislikes freeloaders, laziness, and being scolded especially for something that isnât her fault. What are some of their fears? On the shallow side, I know sheâs scared of horror movies, driving at night, and having to kill cockroaches. But sheâs generally a deep person ehhffdrjfld and I know that more than anything, sheâs terrified of failing and of the future. What are some of their bad habits? Sheâs super forgetful but I think itâs endearing. Hmmm she overworks herself a lot, and overthinks as well. What are some of their talents? Sheâs amazing at writing, creating videos, shooting short films, doing tricks on the balisong, acting, and fixing everything Iâve ever broken haha. What's their favorite amusement park? Iâm not a big amusement park person so we havenât been to any, but I think she likes Disneyland? Have they ever broken a bone? I donât think so. Which do they tend to remember more - names or faces? Neither. What are their religious beliefs? Or are they not religious? Sheâs agnostic. She believes there must be something or someone out there that caused the universe and why everything in it has happened so seamlessly, but she is in no pressure to find out who or what it is. Have they ever volunteered anywhere? To my knowledge, she has not. What's their favorite season? I dunno, we only have two. What sports have they played? Basketball and softball. What musical instruments have they played? Guitar and ukulele. What is a cause they feel strongly about? Womenâs rights, and women in general. Â What's their ancestry? Sheâs Turkish on her momâs side, but other than that sheâs Filipino. Which do they prefer - coffee or tea? Coffee. Do they believe in astrology? Ugh. Yes. Are they more of a night owl or a morning person? Night owl.

gen:VIEW Episode 2, âThereâs Always Tomorrowâ
Rooster Teeth knows how to make a premiere that packs a punch when it comes to their serialized dramas (yes, Iâm including Red vs. Blue in that category). But itâs the non-premiere episodes that generally give you a better idea of if the showâs gonna be good or not.
Or maybe youâre someone like TheFloofArtist and you were predisposed to hate the show long before you even saw it and so found literally every possible reason to hate it from the 2nd episode and dramatically âdropped itâ despite the fact that if you hated the show so much you were shitting on it without having seen a single episode your opinion was never gonna be considered valid.
(Why do grown men throw hissy fits about TV shows?)
Ahem...so. Episode 2 of gen:LOCK...
Letâs Get Down To Business
Where episode 1 was about establishing the relationship between Chase and Miranda, this episode seems to be about establishing the gen:LOCK program itself: how it works and whoâs gonna be in it. For that reason, at least for the first half, itâs very expository, but not in a way that ever feels boring. Honestly, the longer episode lengths means the amount of time they spend standing around and talking doesnât feel like vital time wasted, unlike RWBY which has often made that terrible mistake. This is information we need to get a basic understanding of how this program works, and we also get a chance to hear Dr. Weller passionately talking about his lifeâs work. Jesus christ, David Tennant gives such a good performance. He really sells the good guy mad scientist voice you expect from Dr. Weller.
I wasnât entirely sold on Michael B. Jordan as a voice actor the previous episode, but even if at certain points it was clear we were watching a scene that hadnât been initially animated to his voice, this episode convinced me things were gonna be fine. I loved his performance in the scene of Julian in the tank chatting with Migas: the sort of bittersweetness of the reunion between the two after all that had happened to them, but they were still glad to finally see each other again. Miles Luna deserves some praise too for helping sell the fact that this is a reunion. After all, even though we caught a brief moment of them interacting and joking around in Episode 1, we didnât really have a chance to establish they were close friends. This scene does well to convince us that yes, they were friends, and they are relieved to see each other again.
Chase and Mirandaâs situation was very well-handled in this episode. It was always going to be painful for Miranda to find out Chase was still alive, and even though itâs perfectly logical that Chase wasnât able to reach out to her in the intervening years, it still isnât something she can just brush over. She didnât immediately jump at the chance to see him in-person, and actively avoided him for a day. It would have been a major mistake for her to be the first one who went to visit him. I love this whole situation with Miranda: the way the marketing was going you kind of expected just a bland character defined by her relationship with Chase, and, well, I guess what she does in this episode is sort of defined by the relationship, but itâs done in a way thatâs actually interesting, where you actually care about how she feels about all this. Dakota Fanning does a great job conveying the hurt Miranda feels seeing someone she loved after so long who sheâd given up for dead. I think she might easily be the third best voice actor weâve heard so far, behind Monica Rial and David Tennant.
Hereâs another case where one of my few pre-show expectations got subverted. From the character teasers Iâd sort of expected us to get a depiction of the formation of the gen:LOCK program from the start: presumably that path would have followed Chase and Yasaminâs initial training and the early mech designs we saw in the early posters and the first two teasers. Of course, this was before I had known what they were planning with Chaseâs crash, a path in the story that I could not have possibly predicted. And now Iâm realizing why they didnât do that: 1) it would have been too similar to RWBY and probably have made for a very slow show otherwise, and 2) they wanted to get right into the giant mechs fighting things. Sure, it sort of robs us of seeing some cool stuff about what it was like for Chase to join the program, but I figure weâll get that depicted in flashbacks or in the comics.
One of the accusations regarding Kazu Iida was that having him speak Japanese while everyone else was speaking English would create âThe Lopez Effect.â For those unaware, Lopez is a robot on Rooster Teethâs show Red vs. Blue who speaks âSpanishâ (really sentences run through Google Translate) that is translated for the audience via subtitles but no one else can understand. Now, for what the complain actually entails, I think âLopez effectâ is a bad term for it because Lopezâs situation is played for laughs while in gen:LOCK everyone understands Iida and doesnât bat an eye. The complaint is more that it creates a tonal dissonance in whatâs designed as a dramatic show: while everyoneâs speaking English Kazuâs saying all his lines in Japanese with subtitles. Now, I can understand why that could all sound a little weird, but the thing is the way they set things up in the episode I really donât think Iida speaking English is gonna be as distracting as one might think: they set it up where the characters can understand what heâs saying thanks to the augmented reality gear everyone seems equipped with, so that already established a method of communication, and I just didnât give any thought to the fact heâs speaking Japanese for the rest of the episode. I would honestly be more bothered if he just spoke English all the time.
The other accusation is that the fact that he is the only character who speaks a foreign language was theyâd have an excuse to get the voice of Spike Spiegel, which apparently is bad because itâs âweeb-baiting.â Iâm sorry, I didnât realize they were trying to draw audiences in with who they were casting...
As far as the new gen:LOCK recruits go, we didnât get too much information about them, and this is probably the only issue I have with this episode. Still, there was a lot going on here, so I can forgive not learning everything about them in their first appearance. And the thing is, the sequence with the imposter Sinclair (bravo to Blaine Gibson for being able to flip a coinââhehehââfrom friendly recruit Sinclair to Evil!Sinclair) offered us a good glimpse into who they are as fighters. Especially in recent years, Rooster Teeth fights are a chance to really get an idea for the character (and for that I wholeheartedly thank Monty Oum) and how they handle dangerous situations. Yasamin is clearly someone who can jump into a fight and hold her own without hesitation, Iida is someone who will jump right into a fight, Valentina will keep her distance but can still be quite deadly, and Cammie is a scared little bean...who with a little encouragement can still be helpful.
Now, the Sinclair reveal was a slight bit predictable if you picked up the hints in Character Reveal Teaser 4 (which I hadnât, and in retrospect was blatantly obvious). The fact that it was predictable was the source of derision by some of the more gen:CRIT crowd, but honestly? I donât see predictability as a sign of whether somethingâs good or not. Things can be predictable and still be fun to watch, so long as itâs delivered in an entertaining manner. And we got a pretty awesome fight sequence out of it.
Iâve seen a few people say that the jokes in this show feel forced. Iâm inclined to disagree. The type of humor Gray and Evan are employing in the writing is more grounded than the kind you see in RWBY or Red vs. Blue or Camp Camp: itâs designed to feel more natural to the conversations these characters are having, while also not taking attention away from the more serious aspects of the story. Most of Rooster Teethâs core group (more recent additions less-so) know how to create an engaging story based in serious tones, but they never really stray from their comedy rootsââDay 5, their most dramatic venture to date, was a lot funnier than the concept wouldâve implied because Josh and Chris knew where to inject humor when it would be desperately needed. This episode isnât very different: the drama of Chase basically coming back from the dead gets natural moments of levity from his and Migas brief Siege mention and Dr. Weller being disappointed that he couldnât participate in the reveal; the tension between Chase and Miranda gets a moment where Miranda refuses to hear out Migas on visiting Chase, a moment that can draw laughs while also being realistic to her and Chaseâs actual situation; Chase popping up behind Fake!Sinclair and saying âBoo,â which...actually that was more a legit joke, but I laughed really hard. What I mean to say is gen:LOCK is not trying to be a comedy, but Rooster Teeth knows how and when to make its audience laugh.
(save for Red vs. Blue Season 16 of course...)
Conclusions
Another solid episode of gen:LOCK, and a little more interesting one than âThe Pilotâ because it delves into the meatier stuff that this series is going to follow. Stellar vocal performances by the cast give us a sense of the relationships that need to be picked up in the four years since the war began, and some amazing fighting shows us gen:LOCK means business as an action series.
My only concern is that the way this episode is formatted it doesnât quite stand on its own in the way âThe Pilotâ did, but the fact that it was released alongside âThe Pilotâ worked in its favor, since both episodes give us a good ground to establish what this show is looking to do, and hopefully further episodes will follow on that.
Iâve said enough about people who were predisposed to hate the show commenting on this episode, but I wanna say this also: people. We are two episodes in. The show premiered less than a week ago. There isnât a whole lot of content to draw from to know where itâs going. Be a little more patient.

The Dragon Prince Recap/Review (Season One)
Hey guys, Spaceman here. I know youâre probably wondering where my Favorite Christmas Songs video is by now, or where really any content whatsoever is. Well, the truth is that I spent the first part of this month and most of last month preparing for an entrance audition for a particular music college, whose name I canât currently disclose (I want to be sure I get in before I talk about it), hence the lack of new content. But thatâs all over now, so Iâm prepared to get back to work on videos, art, and possibly even music! Yeah, remember when I did music? Anyway, while Iâm working on that, I thought Iâd write something to keep you guys interested.
Many of you may be aware of this, but from August to September of last year, I really got into Avatar: The Last Airbender. Itâs my current obsession and even took the title of my favorite animated series of all time from the previous holder, Gargoyles, which was no small feat. It got to the point where after I finished watching it, I felt a bit of a hole in my life and needed to find something else to replace it. This is when I heard about Netflixâs series The Dragon Prince, which was described as being similar to Avatar, as well as being created by Avatarâs director Aaron Ehasz and featuring the involvement of some of Avatarâs cast and crew. I watched it and⊠thought it was okay? Just okay, but not great. This month, however, news was released that it was getting a second season, and I was interested, so I figured I might as well watch it again and type out my thoughts. How was it? Letâs take a look.
The Story
The Dragon Prince is set in a world where humans and elves are in conflict. Thereâs a lengthy explanation for this, which the show thankfully provides at the start of the first episode.
youtube
Donât worry; you donât have to watch this in every episode. Anyway, the egg of the dragon king is presumed destroyed, and is imminent war between the elves and humans. As both sides prepare for the war, the elves attempt to assassinate the human King Harrow and his heir, the young Prince Ezran; however, during the attack, fifteen-year-old elf Rayla discovers that the egg was not destroyed, but rather stolen. Rayla teams up with Ezran and his half-brother, Callum, to deliver the egg back to the dragons. Meanwhile, Harrowâs advisor, the mage Lord Viren, is intent on war, and sends his own children Claudia and Soren after our heroes.
Thatâs just the really condensed version of the plot. During the nine episodes in season one, there is a lot of exposition and a lot of other things happen that I havenât even mentioned. I would do an episode-by-episode recap for this show, but honestly, they all kind of blend together. Unlike with other animated shows Iâve watched recently, there arenât really any standalone episodes I can think of. Each one kind of just moves straight into the next, which I guess makes sense for a series on Netflix, a service notorious for encouraging binge-watching.
The very first thing I noticed about The Dragon Prince was that it doesnât really have any true antagonist on either side (at first). Like, you canât really say, âOh, the elves are evil,â or âOh, the humans are evil.â I was super skeptical when the intro described that the humans were to blame for a lot of the problems, including discovering dark magic and slaying the Dragon King, but the intro also pits the elves in the wrong, showing them banishing all the humans instead of just banishing the few who discovered dark magic.
That leads me into discussing a major theme thatâs prevalent at least in season one, the theme of prejudice and tolerance. From the few things that the humans know about the elves, they are painted as horrific killers. Humans think of elves as being bloodthirsty killersâliterally and figurativelyâand the elves are similarly shown holding stereotypes about humans. The fact that Callum and Ezran teamed up with Rayla was only due to the circumstances; it takes several episodes before they are able to fully trust one another. This is a theme that Iâve also seen done well in another favorite fantasy show of mine, Gargoyles.
Admittedly, a few parts of this story seem rather derivative, such as the six primal sources of magic being reminiscent of the Four Elements from Avatar, which leads me to the next topicâŠ
The World
I will admit that itâs not entirely fair to judge a TV show based on its first nine episodes. Granted, I usually hold the policy that if a showâs first five episodes donât get you hooked, then you should not be required to keep watching (take note, Steven Universe fans). The thing is, this show did get me interested, and I want to see it continue to develop, because what we have so far isnât much. It kind of just feels like a standard fantasy world, with elves, dragons, castles, and assorted monsters, which, okay, is a tried and true formula by Tolkien and others, but after the world of Avatar, with its focus on Asian culture, its unique animals, and its nearly steampunk technology, I canât help but feel like this is a slight step down.
Thatâs not to say that itâs bad, of course. There are a few things that make it really pop out and feel real. The background art, for one, is incredible. Some of the monsters feel unique, too, like those on the Cursed Calderaâone of them even kind of looks like a graboid from Tremors. Also, I like what they did with the elvesâ design here. They could have easily just made them pale humans with pointy ears, but instead they put a lot of detail into it, giving the different groups of elves different skin colors, horns, and having them have only four fingers instead of five. Those are some nice touches.
The Characters
Letâs move on to the characters, starting with Rayla, who is easily my favorite character of the group. She admittedly has a bit of a Zuko thing going on, as she was assigned to hunt down the main characters but turns against her original group to help join the main characters on her mission. Other subtle details are similar, too, like her long-lasting inner conflict with her past and her use of dual swords. That said, her journey is a little different; for one thing, Zuko took nearly the entire run of Avatar to fully go through his heel-face turn, only switching sides halfway through the showâs final season. With Rayla, she joins the heroes in the third episode, which cuts out much of the emotional journey but also lends itself to more interactions with the human characters. Sheâs much funnier, for another thing, giving her share of snide remarks but also scoring a bunch of laughs when she goes undercover disguised as a human in one of the episodesâcan you say, âHow do you do, fellow kids humans?â Paula Burrows delivers a great vocal performance, which adds to the character.
Next up is Callum, the main human lead. Now, itâs incredibly easy to draw comparisons between his character and Sokka: Both are goofy, ânormalâ teenage boys in a world filled with magic, not very adept with fighting but good at planning things. More importantly, of course, is the fact that Callum is literally voiced by Sokkaâs voice actor, Jack DeSena. Comparisons⊠were gonna pop up, is what Iâm saying. And Iâll admit that the first time I watched The Dragon Prince, it was super jarring to hear Sokkaâs voice coming out of Callum every time he talked. But there are some differences. While in Avatar, Sokka is the most responsible member of the group and the only one with any real degree of survival training, Callum is more inexperienced and callow, not good with a sword and only starting to learn magic. Heâs also noticeably more chill and less panicky than the Sokka of season one of Avatar and shows that he can actually draw much better. Though considering Sokkaâs drawing abilityâŠ
âŠthatâs not really saying much.
Now to move on to Ezran, Callumâs half-brother. I have to admit, of the main characters, heâs probably the weakest, at least to me. I donât know, he kind of feels a bit flat as a character. All I remember about him is the fact that he can understand animals, which is unique, but he doesnât really have much of a personality aside from just being your typical kid. I know, itâs not easy to characterize a small child whilst making them believable⊠though again, Avatar managed to do so well. Iâm sorry, I shouldnât keep comparing these two shows, but Iâll be damned if it isnât super easy.
Not helping is Ezranâs pet, a glow toad named Bait. As far as animal sidekicks go, I definitely prefer Appa from Avatar; hell, even Momo managed to get a few asskicking moments. Bait kind of just lies around and eats stuff. Several times, he manages to get the main characters into trouble, which I found a little bothersome. The one good thing about him is that his glowing abilities do come in handy a few times to temporarily blind enemies, though⊠Iâll get back to that later.
The trio is pursued by siblings Soren and Claudia. Soren is a young knight and a bit of a dumb jock but has a heart of gold. Claudia, meanwhile, is a nerdy mage who comes off as a bit awkward. They are always fun when they are on screen and have a believable relationship. Itâs also worth noting that early on, Callum is revealed to have a crush on Claudia, which⊠oh boy, letâs hope the shipping discourse in The Dragon Princeâs fandom doesnât get as bad as the Avatar fandom. I can already see a potential clash between the Claudia/Callum and Rayla/Callum crowds. (Full disclosure: Iâm on the Rayla/Callum side.)
The other characters were cool, too. For as little time as we got to know him, I liked King Harrow, Ezranâs father. Even for his cringey dad humor, he was an intriguing character. Itâs hinted that there was a lot of stuff in his past that we donât know about, like his involvement with dark magic. Also intriguing was Lord Viren, Soren and Claudiaâs father. Itâs easy to see that he was once good and still has some good in him, as shown by his friendship with Harrow, but he has been corrupted by his use of dark magic and is too far gone. Finally, Aunt Amaya, Callum and Ezranâs deaf aunt whoâs a solder on the frontlines, was another character I wound up loving. Itâs rare that we see people with disabilities get good representation in animated series (another thing I loved about Avatar with the blind character Toph).
But okay, if weâre going to talk about this show, then I might as well bring up the one criticism that every other critic has already made about it. You know exactly what Iâm talking about.
The Animation
Yes, among all the mixed reviews of this show, one consistent criticism was the animation. It seems to be CGI, but is going for a 2D, hand-drawn look; unfortunately, the way the pull it off is not necessarily the greatest. Take a look at the trailer for an example of what Iâm talking about.
youtube
No, your computer is not glitching out; that is the framerate they went with. And this choppiness is something that seems to be a trend with certain CGI shows outside of this one, with Rooster Teeth being the most notorious offender. If they really wanted to make it look 2D, they should have actually animated it hand-drawn. Doing this just pulls me out of the moment. (Oddly enough, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse does something very similar with its framerate, yet I donât have any problem with that movie doing it.)
To be entirely fair, this is something that Aaron Ehasz has acknowledged. Apparently, season one was given a very low budget, and he has promised that season two will have a steadier framerate. Judging by the trailers Iâve seen for season two⊠yeah, it already looks way better. Also, with my second watch of season one, I found it much easier to look past. Maybe I was just used to it by then?
Assorted Other Stuff
Warning: This section goes into minor spoiler territory. I would highly advise not reading past this if you want to remain spoiler-free when you go into season one. Got it? Alright.
One other complaint I have had is the comedy, which is really hit-or-miss in a lot of places. As I mentioned before, the scenes where Rayla is disguised as a human are hilarious, and some of the snarky dialogue is also witty as hell, but there are other moments with awkward puns and some potty humor that just feel forced to me. Thereâs one scene in episode six where Callum is obviously having an erotic dream about Claudia, which seemed unfitting for this show⊠though to be fair, Avatar also had its share of adult humor.
See also.
Another awkward tidbit is that twice, when Ezran is about to use Baitâs ability to blind his enemies, he says the line, âSay hello to my little friend,â an obvious shout-out to the classic 1983 gangster film Scarface. My question is, why is that line thrown in there? Are most kids going to catch that reference? Call me strange, but regardless of what adult fanbase this show will capture (which, letâs be honest, it will), I highly doubt its target audience is watching Brian De Palma films.
Though maybe they should be.
Speaking of strange homages⊠well⊠take a look.Â
Your eyes donât deceive you. Rayla is doing the infamous Naruto run, where you extend your arms out behind you as you run forward. And she and the other elves do this run multiple times during the show, too. It is neither practical nor particularly cool-looking, so I donât know why this was done in the original show, and I genuinely hope this was only meant as an homage, because⊠again, itâs really damn silly.
The soundtrack of this show is rather nice, I will say. Itâs not as memorable as Avatar or Gargoylesâ, but I did find myself humming the end credits theme song after finishing watching. Speaking of which, during the credits, we get some cute drawings of the characters, some of which connect to the episode, others are apparently meant as foreshadowing for later episodes and plot points. If you watch this show, definitely do not skip the credits.
Now, as for stuff that I hope for the new season. I would like to know more about the cube that Callum and Rayla found at the winter lodge. It seems to have some kind of connection with the Primal Sources. Also, the mysterious magical mirror, I hope we can find out something about that. It was foreshadowed pretty heavily in episode eight, so I doubt they wonât do anything with it. Speaking of magic, Iâd love to see Callum do more magic in the new season. It probably wonât be more wind magic, since he destroyed the sphere to birth the dragon, but Callum clearly has potential to become a great mage. Also, I would love to find out more about King Harrowâs past, as well as more about Callum and Ezranâs deceased mother, the Queen. We see Viren and Amaya mourning her by her gravesite in one scene, and Callum drawing her in another. How did she die? What was she like? These are all worthwhile questions for season two, or for future seasons after season two depending on how long the show goes for.
Conclusion
The Dragon Prince is a worthwhile watch. Itâs nowhere near as great as Avatar or Gargoyles yet, and it is still clearly paving its own identity, but I still find it enjoyable enough and feel that it has potential for greatness. My main criticisms would be to up the animation quality and to develop the characters more, though my guess is that both will already happen in season two, which will be dropping later tomorrow, February 15.
But yeah, you have my attention, show. Donât screw it up.

Watching Doctor Who Season 37 (Series 11), Episode Four
Ok, Iâm going to have to say it: Doctor Who has a checkered past in regards to spiders.
I mean, I understand the temptation to go with arachnid-like monsters. Spiders often creep people out, so giant, mutant spiders should have an even greater horror vibe to them. Unfortunately, it seems arachnids of all sorts never fare well when appearing in Doctor Who.Â
Thus we have comically stiff spiders with goofy voices in Planet of the Spiders. We have genuinely threatening, but also drama-queen diva spiders in the meh The Runaway Bride. And then you have what could have been truly creepy spider-like creatures in Kill the Moon which were wasted by being featured in a dire episode like Kill the Moon.
So when I saw the title of this one, I had to resist the temptation to roll my eyes. And not just because we got another music pun/reference in an episode title (first Bowie and now the Sex Pistols...). I figured we could be in for some very first class cheese with this one.
All that said, I decided to give Arachnids in the UK a go with as open of a mind as possible.
As usual, spoilers from here onward....
Episode Thoughts
This episode went back to the season openerâs structure of having things happen that appear unrelated at first, but quickly fit together into a main plotline well before the episode ends. Itâs a smart technique as it can help to cover any thinness to the plot.Â
We start with Robertson, a guy who is suspiciously similar to another hotel-owning, multi-millionaire businessman with a crass, harsh personality who decided to run for president. Seriously, not since The Happiness Patrol have we been given such a painfully obvious reference to a real-life political figure on Doctor Who.
And wait, is that Chris Noth? Why yes, yes it is. Thatâs something I seriously did not expect and itâs fun to see him in this. XD
Anyway, Citizen Robertson here rants about a possible threat to his political future and fires a random employee for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. This actually turns out to be not so random later on....
(Side note: They do name drop Trump later in the episode with Robertson mentioning that he canât stand the guy. I guess thatâs one way to deflect the obvious....XD)
Meanwhile, the Doctor actually manages to get her companions back to their correct time and place and soon appears to regret her efficiency. Fortunately for her, Yasmin is up for inviting everyone to tea which everyone immediately accepts.
After wonderfully awkward moments with Yasminâs family and some poignant moments alone with Graham, we finally get to the spiders. Well sort of. We just get one spider to start out with, but there was plenty of foreshadowing before that to let us know that it wonât just be one spider.
Soon, the plot ties together when we realize that it was Yasminâs mother who got fired and a neighbor of Yasminâs family has a friend/co-worker/? who is a specialist in regards to spiders and who is worried that she hasnât shown up for a few days. This eventually leads to a showdown in the lavish, recently finished hotel between humans and arachnids.Â
Some more quick side notes....
The hotel they chose for the principal location is a good one. It has the right Overlook Hotel vibe to it which is perfect to accentuate the horror in this episode.
Ok, having Yasminâs mom be the one who got fired by Robertson is a solid way to tie the plot together. Having an arachnid expert be friends with someone who lived in the same building as Yasminâs family and having her show up just as the Doctor starts to investigate teeters dangerously toward deus ex machina territory.
But on a much funnier note, did anyone else notice someone (Ryan, I think?) making shadow puppets in the background while the Doctor and McIntyre were talking about Serious Spider Stuff in McIntyreâs lab? Thatâs the sort of offhand detail that I just love...
Now, back to the rest of the episode...
As can be expected with someone like Robertson, all of his employees are taken out by the spiders leaving the Doctor, her companions, Yasminâs mom, Naija, and our new friend, Dr. McIntyre to find out that thereâs is both abandoned coal mines underneath the hotel (which is niffty for the spiders to get around) and a toxic landfill that was very poorly managed.
Ok, at this point I need to stop to consider something thatâs bothering me about the plot.Â
I think we can all agree that Robertson is a terrible person and was horribly negligent in allowing the landfill to combine stuff willy nilly. But if weâre going to assign blame for the mutant spiders, shouldnât some of it be placed on McIntyre and her lab? These scientist are manipulating spider DNA and apparently not being careful enough in making sure the specimens are dead before disposal. Even if Robertson didnât have an unusually toxic landfill mutating these spiders further, those half-dead âsuper spidersâ could have wrecked havoc on local ecosystems. Thus, I hardly think McIntyre should be acting like sheâs on some sort of moral high ground compared to Robertson.
In the end, itâs decided that itâs more humane(?) to suffocate/starve all the baby spiders in Robertsonâs panic room and drive the huge mother spider out of the hotel...to where, I donât know. However, Robertson clearly wanted a chance to kill something and thus, shoots the giant spider before it can asphyxiate.Â
This leads to another little issue I have. The Doctor and McIntyre were just going to watch that giant spider slowly suffocate and die. Robertson shot it once and put it out of its misery quickly. I guess Iâm at a loss as to how Robertsonâs solution in and of itself is crueler than a slow death.Â
And the thing is, I think the writers missed an opportunity here. Having Robertson clearly show no remorse for what he did was chilling enough. But I think we could have added an even more sinister edge to his character if it was made clear that his decision to shoot the spider would be considered merciful and correct by many and that it wasnât a black and white decision.Â
That way, the horrifying aspect of his character would not have been what he did but instead the mindset and motives of why he did it. Few things are more evil that someone who hides their malevolence under the guise of good intentions.Â
After that painfully abrupt ending, the Doctor prepares to leave and discovers, much to her surprise and delight, that Graham, Ryan and Yasmin arenât ready to say goodbye to her and traveling through time and space.Â
So did Arachnids in the UK avoid the usual trap of tacky spider themed episodes? Well.....
The thing is, there are several things this episode did right. The number one was a wonderful mix of humor and lowkey scares. We get moments like Ryan and Grahamâs two man comedy act leading up to a terribly creepy shot of several giant spiders skittering toward them. The atmosphere of the hotel and some well placed jump scares are balanced by the hilarious sight of mutant spiders gravitating a energetic grime tune (actually listened to it again while writing this, and it really set the mood).Â
The problem for me has to be the easy out the plot took. I get wanting to keep this an Earth-bound problem (and making an eco-statement). But the separating of the so-called âgood guysâ and âbad guysâ wasnât neatly done and the ending felt far too much like the writers couldnât think of a good solution in the time they had left.Â
Thus, this episode works far better as a showcase for humor, atmosphere and characterization than it does as a carefully plotted story.
Character Thoughts
So how about that characterization then?
Two things were well defined in this episode.Â
The Doctor is going to continue to be socially awkward, high-energy goofball.
This Doctor is not one who wants to brood by themselves somewhere even for a few moments. She clearly is one of those Doctor who vastly prefers to travel with companions.
Continuing in the tradition of each Doctor often being a âreactionâ to the previous one, Thirteen is certainly far less prickly and much more openly social than Twelve. She seems to thrive on the âfamilyâ environment a crowded TARDIS creates. The only Doctor I can compare that to is probably Five who also seemed very invested in traveling with a group although there is far, far more harmony on Thirteenâs TARDIS than there ever was on Fiveâs.Â
Myself, Iâm enjoying a return to the idea of the Doctor being warmer and more familial as I never thought being difficult and prickly were necessary solely to create a sense of âothernessâ about the Doctor. Whittaker still manages this with Thirteenâs scattershot, quirky approach to experiencing new places, people and events.
A lot of the humor in this episode was pulled off nicely by Whittaker whether itâs the cringing moments of awkward around Yasminâs family or her sudden thought that The Spider Mother in the Ballroom could be âthe best novel Edith Wharton never wrote.âÂ
Meanwhile, Ryan and Graham also have some wonderful bits together as they (very reluctantly) keep having to go out on spider-related missions in the hotel. The two of them continue to be a fun team who are slowly trying to figure out this family âthingâ they have been thrust into.
Funnily enough, while on the surface this could look like an episode that would focus more on Yasmin since we are spending time with her family....it really doesnât. The most we get is some insight as to why she wants to travel with the Doctor: because she loves her family, but clearly doesnât always get along with them that great. I think this is another opportunity the writers missed as we could have gotten a bit more insight into how her family played a role in the person she became. Instead, their presence seems to mainly service the plot (Naija) or try to add to the humor (the rest of her family).Â
The Last Word
Iâm afraid Doctor Who may never have a completely solid episode featuring spiders....even with this effort. This is episode is a fun ride most of the time with some great moments of humor and characterization, so it manages to not be truly cringe-y. However, it would have been nice if the writers had put more thought into how to end the main plotline and found more interesting ways to develop Yasminâs family and by extension Yasmin herself.

Your Opening Week Baseball Guide
Well, March Madness is over. Your bracket probably sucked anyway. So you probably need to get caught up on the first week of baseball. Iâm here to help you. And while itâs probably way too early to draw any real conclusions from the first week, I donât want you wandering around looking as clueless as Gabe Kapler. EARLY SEASON BURN. Itâs okay if you donât get that joke yet. You will. Letâs start... Â
AL East Â
Current Playoff Team: Red Sox
Projected Playoff Teams: Yankees, Red Sox
See, what did I tell you last week? Winky smile. After the Red Sox blew a comfortable lead on Opening Day, Iâm guessing that every psychotic Boston fan wanted Alex Cora run out of town. Now theyâve rattled off 5 wins in a row and weâre contemplating whether or not the Red Sox might have the best rotation in baseball. I mean, probz not. But a week in they sure do.Â
You think Giancarlo Stanton is under a microscope in New York? Dude already got booed. Itâs all fun and games in New York when youâre crushing two home runs on Opening Day, and itâs a lot harder four games later when youâre 0-for-5 with 5 Kâs in football weather in the Bronx. I think heâll be fine. Maybe Yankees fans should worry more about Dellin Betances. Â Â Â
AL Cy Young: Dylan Bundy, Orioles.
For all the deserved accolades of Bostonâs starting pitching, the best in the AL so far as been Bundy, whose WAR leads the league, accompanied with a 1.35 FIP and a 0.69 ERA. That being said, the rest of the conversations surrounding division are a guessing game about where the Blue Jays will be before the trade deadline and whether or not they should trade Josh Donaldson. Right now, FanGraphs has them a game off the second wild card spot and FiveThirtyEight has them at 26% to make the playoffs. Thatâs a tough call if that happens. Itâll probably be a much easier decision for the Orioles, so weâll see who gets to slobber all over the chance to land Manny Machado for the postseason.    Â
AL Central
Current Playoff Teams: White Sox, Twins
Projected Playoff Teams: Indians, Twins (FiveThirtyEight only)
If youâre a Twins fan, youâve got to be loving this early start from Brian Dozier. And Jose Berrios. And Eduardo Escobar. Right now Iâm feeling confident in their chances. Iâm probably even more excited if Iâm a White Sox fan, since projections have them around 68-73 wins and theyâre currently on pace to crush that. Yeah, theyâre only 5 games in. I donât want to get too excited. But the Sox have homered in every game. Matt Davidsonâs 3 home runs on Opening Day were just a blip on the radar compared to the attention Stanton got. And this is a young team already headed in the right direction. The national sports media is still waiting around for the Indians to get hot before they care about any of this.Â
AL West
Current Playoff Teams: Astros, Angels
Projected Playoff Teams: Astros, Angels (FanGraphs only) Â Â
Did you see all the fancy Astros ring and banner celebrations? Itâs looking like thatâs gonna happen a lot down in Houston. George Springer led off the season with a home run for the second year in a row. Theyâre widely considered to have the best staff in the Majors (sorry Boston... and I guess everyone else). Theyâve got four guys playing the outfield. And if the Division wasnât looking so tough, we might be able to project the Astros at a billion wins this year. Speaking of which...
AL MVP: Carlos Correa, Astros. Â Â Â
This Opening Week shit can probably get eye rolls for most things, but Correa wouldnât be a bad pick to be MVP, anyway. Right now, Correa leads the League in WAR and heâs been the second-best hitter, so Iâm giving him the early lead over Mitch Haniger of the Mariners and Didi Gregorius of the Yankees.Â
AL Rookie of the Year: Shohei Ohtani, Angels.Â
Remember when this guy fucking sucked in Spring Training? That was kind of fun. Now the Babe Ruth comparisons arenât actually that insane. Ohtani might be the hardest-throwing starter in baseball. His hitting is starting to resemble the power exhibition he puts on in batting practice. And maybe we donât need BREAKING NEWS every time this guy gets a hit, but this is one of the only over-hyped stories of the young season that actually has my full attention. Oh yeah, and heâs only 22.     Â
NL East
Current Playoff Teams: Mets, Braves, NationalsÂ
Projected Playoff Teams: Nationals, Mets (FanGraphs only)
I think there might be an East Coast bias when Derek Jeter sitting in the stands in Miami gets more attention than actual games in the Midwest. But a lot of the attention is actually warranted so far. The Mets are going to be interesting this year. They only won 70 games last year, which made me skeptical of picking them for a Wild Card. Right now, theyâre projected anywhere from 81-88 wins. Maybe Mickey Callaway is changing the culture there. I donât know. But after the first week, Iâm actually going to say...
NL Cy Young: Matt Harvey, Mets. Â Â
Heâs back, baby! Or not. Like I said, nobody knows. But Iâll take that 0.00 ERA and 1.56 FIP as a good sign. Plus, itâs not like he has to be âthe manâ in Queens anymore.Â
NL MVP: Freddie Freeman, Braves.Â
Heâs been the best hitter in the League so far. And heâs probably the best player in baseball that America and your girlfriend have never heard of. The Braves have had the best offense in baseball early on. Freeman is a big reason why. Because he always is.   Â
The Nationals always seem to have fifteen different compelling storylines over the course of a season. Thereâs the lingering fact that theyâve never advanced in the playoffs. They have the impending free agency of Bryce Harper to talk about over and over and over again. Iâm sure Nats fans love that shit. And since Harper always seems to be amazing in April, itâs not going to slow anything of those talks down. How anticlimactic will it be when he re-signs with Washington? Anyway, Adam Eaton has also made a big splash in his return from injury. So there hasnât even really been much attention on their non-Dusty-Baker manager just yet. Itâs just a matter of time to see who theyâre gonna lose to in the first round. HUGE BURN to their zero fans that I know of.   Â
You know which new manager is getting scrutiny? Gabe Kapler of the Phillies. It seems like every team has a new manager, but only one pulled their starter when he was dealing on Opening Day and then blew a 5-run lead. And only one called to the pen with nobody warming up. And only one looks like heâs not gonna be done reigning down destruction on Philadelphia until every one of their relievers have Tommy John surgery. Thatâs probably harsh. But itâs also probably funnier to me because he also looks incompetent anywhere outside of a cross fit box or a gym that only plays butt rock. Iâm guessing he figures it out eventually.Â
Hey, look! Derek Jeter is sitting in the stands with Papi and Posada!Â
NL Central
Current Playoff Teams: Pirates, BrewersÂ
Projected Playoff Teams: Cubs, Cardinals. Â
Is it ever too early to start freaking out about the Cubs? I mean, Ian Happ was great in Spring Training. Then he homered on the first pitch of the season and after that, itâs basically been suck city. The Cubs offense is setting all-time records for striking out. Theyâre 2-3 after playing the Marlins and Reds, who are projected to win a combined ZERO games this year. Maybe we can blame the 17-inning game against the Marlins on Day 2. Maybe itâs way too early to be worried about anything. Maybe I should take solace in the fact that their bullpen has looked dope AF and that was a huge problem last year. Theyâre fine, right?  Â
As far as the rest of the division goes, youâve got a fast start from the Pirates, who have only played in frigid weather. The Cardinals picked up Greg Holland, which could be huge for their chances at the Wild Card... or the Division, I guess. The Cardinals and Brewers played in a game that started and ended with back-to-back home runs. And Paul DeJong has probably been the most interesting story for STL. Heâd be my second pick for MVP, after Freeman. He also hit .257 last year so whatever.Â
NL West
Current Playoff Team: Diamondbacks
Projected Playoff Teams: Dodgers, Diamondbacks (FiveThirtyEight only)
If youâre a Dodgers fan, whatâs freaking you out more; bad outings and decreased velocity from Clayton Kershaw or bad outings and decreased velocity from Kenley Jansen? Because both things are happening. Kershaw is 0-2 and you can hear the whispers about whether or not heâs past his prime, even though everyone was blowing him in Spring Training. Jansen has an 18.00 ERA. Is this the dreaded World Series hangover that is obviously not happening in Houston? Iâm looking at the rest of that staff and thinking theyâre probably going to be fine. The moral of this post is that everything is fine. Probably because as a Cubs fan, Iâm trying to convince myself that everything is fine.   Â
As far as the rest of the Division goes, Nick Ahmed has had a hot start in Arizona. Joe Panikâs solo home runs in the first two games led to two 1-0 games for the Giants, which was super fucking weird. And Charlie Blackmon actually hit on the road for the Rockies... where heâs staying put. And just for fun...
NL Rookie of the Year: Christian Villanueva, Padres. Â Â Â Â Â
Maybe the Phillies should call up Hunter Greene to make anyone give a shit about NL rookies this year. But Villanueva is tied for the NL rookie lead in WAR and heâs mashing for the shitty Padres. The Cubs actually got Villanueva with Kyle Hendricks in the Ryan Dempster trade. But they decided they probably didnât have room for him in the infield, since he doesn't strike out every time at bat. Oh man. SELF BURN.  Â
So this is a good place to start. Everything will look completely different in a week. But thatâs part of the fun. Baseball is fucking awesome. Â

âPut It Downâ Review (Spoilers and this is a little long!)
So, I saw S21 E02.
For the past week, my stomach has been churning over what the outcome of this episode would be.
âŠand I was NOT disappointed.
Holy fucking shit. Letâs justâŠbreak this down.
-The introduction
Tweek going up and just BANGING his hands on the piano and screeching may be the biggest laugh Iâve gotten since Wendy described what Yaoi was back in season 19. Not only is it incredibly relatable to anyone suffering from major anxiety problems or stress, but itâs so Tweek.
Stan got a couple lines. I donât know about yâall, but I am proud of him. In all seriousness, have we justâŠforgotten about Stan while making room for Randy. Heâs one of those jokes thatâŠI donât know, heâs kinda depressing anymore. In âWhite People Renovating Housesâ, Sharonâs blank expressions and his attitude towards DarylâŠI didnât really get why the joke was funny. I mean, I got the melodrama, but it didnât get much of a laugh out of me. Why wasnât Stan or Shelly included? It would have been way funnier to see their reactions to their father. We need to focus on the kids reacting to the madness around them. Not focusing on just the adults doing the madness.
In shortâbring back Stanâs reactions and opinions! Oh, and Kyle and Kenny. Especially Kenny. I canât remember the last time he got attention, either.
Craig calling Tweek âhoneyâ and âbabeâ while no one was around. This is no longer fake dating. We donât know if it started off as such, but this relationship has gone way past âfor the townâ shit. In fact, the only person who really talks about homosexuality is Tweekâs father, which is pretty much just a running joke (because Mr. Tweak is a terrible dad).
-Cartmanâs suicide campaign.
Okay, so this is basically the B plot of the episode andâŠit shows. Normally, the Cartmanâs storylines are the ones I prefer in South Park episodes, but not only did it feel kind of forced, but it wasnât very funny. Honestly, watching a smart girl like Heidi being manipulated by this psycho is hard to sit through. As someone who has known people in these relationships and had a friend who threatened suicide if I was going to abandon them, this hits hard.
Iâm not saying it is a bad idea to delve into this issue as it is becoming more public, especially online, but Matt and Trey could really piss off a lot of the fans if they take this too far. South Park has always been about pushing the limit, but they also know how much their show has helped countless individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. The honesty of the show gives many people hope that the world isnât just filled with passive morons or people who believe you need to be a certain type of person. If they attempt to harshly mock this spectrum, the showâs rating could potentially plummet to the point of them only being able to make the next two seasons that they signed on for after this one.
I do think if they show both sides, the people that are seriously suicidal and people like Cartman who desire attention as well as manipulating people, it could be successful. If they can phrase the moral correctly, I think this season could come out as one of the absolute best. If they only wanted it for this episode, I can see why they would choose to go onto a different storyline for the season since there is plenty of other issues to delve into. Still, if itâs a storyline they are going to tackle, I hope they know what they are getting into.
-Tweekâs cupcakes.
I finally lived to see Tweek covered in frosting and baking ingredients. Lifeâis good.
-Trump.
Now, as Matt and Trey explained, while they are still going to joke about Trump, they didnât want it to be the focus of the season of even every episode. Here, the joke worked perfectly. It was less about Trump and more about Tweek being in a situation that he has no control over, no matter how hard he tries to fix it. (The joke about no one caring about Hillary made me snort so loud my nose hurt. Equal playing field. Thank God.)
-Fidget spinners.
Considering all the previews and screenshots were showing fidget spinners, most fans thought the small devices would be the focus of the episode. And, call me crazy, Iâm kinda glad it was just a funny joke about how they donât necessarily help people.
The devices are used for kids with ADHD (or if they have some sort of issues paying attention), who need to keep their hands moving if theyâre in class or trying to focus on something. Using it as a calming device is a myth and the show accurately showed just how people rely on them a little too much.
-Children getting hit by cars.
I have to admit, the shot of that first kid getting hit was oddly chilling. Mostly because of how accurate it parodies commercials. Whatâs even better is that his death wasnât a joke. It was something the whole school (not counting Cartman) banded together to pay their respects too. Later, the other deaths became more of a joke, but whatâs incredible is how they manage to tie this B plot with the A plot. But more on that later.
(GODDAMN THEY KILLED A LOT OF KIDS THIS EPISODE WTF)
-Tweek in Craigâs room.
OKAY. This was FUCKING hilarious. Watching Tweek without any problem or pretense heading into Craigâs room only to scream out his fear was another huge laugh I got from this episode. The fact that besides being a little disgruntled (the poor kid just woke up), Craig is hardly surprised by the appearance and action, meaning this happens A LOT.
And Craigâs space stuff EVERYWHERE. Matt and Trey knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
-The creek date
The argument between Craig and Tweek was some of the best writing Iâve ever scene. Not only are they fighting like an actual couple would in this situation, but while watching it the first time, I understood Craigâs frustration and couldnât see what Tweek wanted. However, once the true solution of what Tweekâs needs is explained, I finally understood.
When it comes to emotion vs. logic, the friction is unstoppable. Personally, I am usually a logical person. I take into account as many options and facts as I can find and then make my conclusions. However, when I have no information or things are out of my control, my emotional side takes over and I begin to panic. Once I understood this opposition was the problem, I realized what the episode was saying.
Tweekâs not being unreasonable and Craig isnât being uncaring. They are both frustrated because Tweek doesnât know how to make himself feel better and Craig doesnât know how to help him. Which leads to my next point.
-The message.
When Heidi makes her statement about emotions, the writing is very good and allowing her to speak about the issue, but also having it relate to creekâs storyline without even addressing said storyline before the following scene. It works on both accounts. Itâs once again sad to see Heidi following after Eric because, as most of us would agree, she deserves better (or at least revenge).
Moving on, Craigâs understanding of the situation doesnât paint him as the bad guy who needs to apologize. Instead, he realizes what the best course of action is to take to help his boyfriend. And without hesitation, he does. It shows that Craig learned a lesson about compromise. That sometimes other people need to work through things in a different way than Craig might be used to working through them. That can be a hard concept for even some adults.
And may I just say, the fact that Tweek was using the (FOUR?!) fidget spinner idea to attempt to calm himself was so very sweet. Even though he probably knew it wouldnât work, he still tried for Craig. Even after that huge fight. It expresses the stability of their relationship, even when things are painfully tense.
Craig helping to guide Tweek to his own epiphany was brilliant. He wasnât treating Tweek like an idiot. Thatâs what Tweek needed. Someone can go up and tell you what you need. But thatâs not the same as figuring it out for yourself. Once Tweek had a moment to let out his fear and talk it out (rather than people distracting him or just telling him to be quiet), his mind cleared up and the solution for what would make him feel better was his own idea. Craig didnât need to be a fixer, he needed to be a supporter. And although he didnât realize it before then, his heart was still in the right place.
Many people have said that Tweek and Craig may be the most accurate, stable homosexual couple ever (or at least for 2017) and I highly agree. Since theyâre kids, it takes the physical aspect out. I never felt the need to see them kiss (maybe a hug wouldâve been nice) because it was about their feelings, not their attraction to one another. They have a mutual respect of love for each other that was tested in this episode. Their fight wasnât âpettyâ or âforcedâ. It was natural, like a disagreement any couple could face.
If this is the kind of amazing messages, character moments, and wonderful humor we are really in for, I am definitely looking forward to going down to South Park this season. Well done, Matt and Trey.

HOW YOUR CANON CHARACTER HAS DEVELOPED SINCE THEIR ORIGINAL CONCEPT.please fell free to be as creative as you like!! AND IF YOU HAVE A CANON CHARACTER, answer in the sense of what made you want to play them, how you have come to interpret them differently -
Letâs try to do that novel explanation about Phil. You will get one for the Doctor later. Also, one of the funniest things ever concerning this version of Philip Butler is that the line between canon character and original character is so tight I have no bloody idea where he is exactly is soo Iâm going to take it as the canon characterâs part.Â
PART ONE. what thing(s) initially inspired your character ?  - First of all, Philip Butler is a 07th Expansion character, and without lying I fall in love with alike-Battler Ushiromiya the first chapter he is introduced back in Rose Guns Days. Enjoying him for the smaller of appearance he get, still frustrated to didnât know that much about him like his past or anything not at once relevant with what going on. The really first things you get me to want fix this characterâs fate is linked to Gabrielâs appearance back in the season 3, when this other character pointed his noise at the end of the newest chap 1 of 1949. And there come the tragedy. Basically, during the rest of the season and during the entire season 4, I see the character I like be trapped out, powerless to the terrible actions he saw, and literally unable to stop Gabriel --- sadomasochist I am with 07th Expansion, I thought that rereading a third time the entire situation will appease my screaming of despair butâŠno. Every time I get into 1949 and then 1950, I emotionally crushed by emotions and I feel sooooo bad for Butler. Associated to it, beyond 1950, we have no bloody idea what he become. Another point I also wanted to explore, without the apparent shout out Battler Ushiromiya, how he is underdeveloped as a villain who beat up others villains (because you know, it what he wanted to do with Gabriel but hot damn he failed) since canonically he is a villain (back in season 2, when Caleb becoming a bit more problematic he planned out his assassinationâŠwhich failed).  Second thing --- that shout out Battler Ushiromiya, when considering his behaviour and the various common points with him (he have a sister Ange, he is born the 15th July, if you search someone for sexual tease he is the man for you) even if they hadnât canonically related to each other and the character on itself is a homageâŠI wanted to explore that route of âalternate Battlerâ fully. That mean expose rightfully how much he is Battler into another context, playing another role and with an entire new back-story, for better showing the difference between the two characters and playing with another dynamic. Since the character is a possibility of bring Uminekoâs elements implicitly, I taken the chance. Still, Umineko-wise, since Five=Featherine and he is the most closer of the Doctor as his accomplice since Battler already exist into his universe, he has to be Bernâs Five. Again, that another layer of character development I preferred to add, playing with the doubt of the character: making it enough believable than without concrete meta-world he is Bernkastel/Erika while both these characters are separate people, parallel them instead. The last real inspiration comes from Tom Hagen, from The Godfather. Here come the funny fact: both Tom and Butler had a sister and lost them differently beyond their power, both are mixed race at the basis, and timeline wise, Tom is what could had been Butler beyond 1950. I didnât plan out to get an entire abyss situation, but since the occasion was here, I take it. Likewise as Battler, I take the principle that he could be an alternate version while Butler parallel Tom existence; taking the second option as canon while let doubts on the first. As Butler: I wished to get more on-screen âŠalso since he canonically dies; he have a second chance.Â
PART TWO.  how has their personality developed from their first concept ? At the moment this character jumped on me and behave like he always had been here, since the beginning, his friendly personality had been put in front of others characters: he is the ally, the one who can trust, the one who dealing with so many messes with the Doctorâs off-screen you wonder how he can bear it, the one who cheering up his companions and overall absolutely nothing make you believe he is in reality the local asshole the Doctor befriend, calmed down when he is the voice of a reason coming from a villainâs mouth. Since the first beginning, I wanted him to really have messed up bad, truly bad with the Doctor for expose that his behaviour is the result of the Time Lord influence. Without lying, I based his personality before the Doctor from Bernkastel: he use and throw away people as he wishes, he is a sore loser who didnât take too much trouble to remove problematic element and is the cruellest person you can met. Another thing I found funnier is the fact itâs Phil who introduce the Doctor to the Red Truth cruel truth. With all the layers the character possessed, in the exterior and in the metaphor, his personality is complex. As the local asshole; Phil had taken the position of the friendly guy for let all responsibility to Five/Featherine to be the biggest dick ever. If you deal with his friendly personality, you are fine. If you search him into subjects that you shouldnât, you are in trouble.
PART THREE.  how has their appearance developed from their first incarnation ? Finding a right FC for Butler was very difficult. Gratefully for me, since the character at the basis is an American, I could use an Americanâs FC assuming I found one. My revelation coming from rewatching the Godfather, when I realized, that Robert Duvallâs Tom Hagen was exactly how I imagined Phil back in the days when he had turned good. After had watching lot of Robert Duvall movies/series, I confirm itâs the perfect FC. Lot of his roles included local asshole when he isnât emotionally damaged or dealing with familyâs problemsâŠwhich give me way, FC-wise, to develop Phil. Itâs not every day you can create a world of abyss situation just with one character.Â
PART FOUR. what do you think most makes your character unique ? Wow. My logic answer to it will be how multi-layered the character is to the point the layers are interconnected itâs bring the character development I wanted from Rose Guns Days â Umineko â The Godfather in a row. He is enough multi-layered for be an independent person having no connection with the Doctor before knowing him and having a entire separate life who carry on without him --- he is written indirectly as a companion (because that not officially unless it become official, even if into the fact, he is a companion) while having all the outside consequences of the Doctorâs influence into his life, how it could change someone life, personality, and the further metaphorical repercussions of the lifeâs travels. He is also a collection of multiple points of view since he literally gets them all: from the Doctor, from the companions....making him totally impartial in almost every situation he cross. He is also the indirect link between the mafia and Rokkenjima while be the two people the Doctor canât save canonically as he wanted --- back in the Primaveraâs family, the Doctor canât save Butler from Gabriel as back in Rokkenjima, the Doctor canât push Battler to didnât renounce to the Ushiromiyaâs name as avoid the tragedy while, in a very funny way, be the two people he will see the less. The Doctor wonât have a chance to sharing lot with Butler back in the Primaveraâs family and the Primaveraâs family choices will lowered the chance to get some conversations with him as nothing about the battle meta-world between Beatrice/Battler is rewritten ; only another perspective is bring for develop it. The most unique thing is also how, in a same person, Phil represents the captain Bulter, Tom Hagen, Battler Ushiromiya, the Witch of Miracles Bernkastel, the Witch of Truth Erika Furudo without contradict them and develop them.Â

A Soukoku Fic Rec List From the Authors Themselves!
Hey everyone! This is gonna be a long rec list, so buckle up! My Soukoku Server alongside Chuuyaâs Harem have had an event this past week asking Soukoku writers to rec the fics theyâre most proud of writing for skk. It can be hard to get recognition in a big fandom, and sometimes as a fic writer itâs hard to feel proud of your work, so we wanted to spread some positivity and visibility while having fic authors be proud of all the hard work theyâve done!Â
The submissions weâve gotten over the past week are amazing! They range from tragedy to angst to fluff to crack and thereâs something for everyone. You might know a few of these fics, and a few of them might be new to you, but they all demonstrate our love for soukoku! Here are the fics, with comments from the authors themselves:Â
sonderesque
This- http://archiveofourown.org/works/10002131 is an abstract piece that is pretty much just poetry and I actually kinda like it and it'd be amazing if it got checked out, although it is one of my older ones (angst ofc)
And this one- http://archiveofourown.org/works/9912410/chapters/22212713 I'm fond of, because it's Hanahaki and even if it was a gift, I enjoyed writing it a lot, and it was really, really fun to write
Oh my- here's one of the most stupid things I have ever written- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wkiRRumJYd_67P1XuOXLZn7b6ANSDdTLvx6QLZiZw0M/edit?usp=sharing Dedicated to @Rose and it's a piece of crack and ridiculousness.
@kageyamas-mom
This is a piece I wrote when a certain someone wanted to do a fic trade (I wrote angst for her, she wrote fluff for me) - it's an introspective thing from Chuuya's POV. I enjoyed writing it! http://archiveofourown.org/works/8578450
crimson-snowdrift
These fics have been submitted for SKK Week, Days 1, 2, and 6 respectively. All of these are fluff Soukoku fics and I consider them as my best works so far (in my 1 month of going back to writing lol) and I hope you'll enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them!
Wish -Â http://archiveofourown.org/works/11304546Â (Chuuya reminisces that time eight years ago, when he first attended a festival with Dazai.)
Hanami -Â http://archiveofourown.org/works/11314278Â (Dazai appreciates some of the many things he loves about Chuuya.)
Musings -Â http://archiveofourown.org/works/11362332Â (Dazai's thoughts on Chuuya, inspired with quotes from his real life counterpart. Has a chapter 2 ready, this time from Chuuya's POV)
@kiimone
henlo henlo these are my three favorite skk fics and they might be a little (very) shitty but they're the best ones i got!! i hope you enjoy~
http://archiveofourown.org/works/11171838 this one is a recent one and a greek mythology au abt dazai being a merchant and chuuya being a sea nymph! they fall slowly in love and care abt each other a lot (pain level: 2/10)
http://archiveofourown.org/works/10841241 this is a fic that im most proud of!! it was a commission fic about chuuya having scars from using corruption for too long and hating his own image but dazai helping him get through it by showing him his own scars (pain level: 100000/10)
http://archiveofourown.org/works/9848708 this was VERY long ago but it was a fic for rose on valentine's day abt a fantasy au! chuuya is a white mage and dazai is a wyvern-riding cavalier who always gets himself in trouble!! they fight demons and monsters together while on a quest to find an abandoned city (pain level: 3/10)
Daanny
these are both old ish
http://archiveofourown.org/works/7919491 - chuuya and dazai make an agreement, it's pretty straightforward lol - the description in the first bit of story was rlly pretty and i spent a lot of time trying to create the flow
http://archiveofourown.org/works/8249605 - soulmate AU and hanahaki AU - used a number of symbolisms thru story also flower language is pretty yeah
@fraink5
I'm going to casually leave my fics here:Â
http://archiveofourown.org/works/9942896 âBah Humbugâ- Christmas by Himself this Year - Summary: Â Dazai thought he would be spending Christmas alone until he ran into Chuuya, who he supposes is better company than no one. pls I know it's a Christmas fic, but it's my first Soukoku fic, and I'm proud.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/11308074 Trust Fall - Summary: 'âDonât worry; you can trust me.â Dazai assured Chuuya, who was at this point already falling. Chuuya tumbled forcefully into Dazaiâs extended arms. He squirmed briefly but quickly gave up upon realizing that he could not escape. Chuuya and Dazai had their own trust fall, which worked most of the time.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/11336511/chapters/25372383 Conqueror - Summary: After the death of his father, Chuuya inherits the role of the shogun, the most powerful man in Feudal Japan. On the other hand, Dazai is the emperor, a position which holds little to nothing besides money. In their various encounters, Dazai has his heart set on one thing: control of the shogunate. Historical AU. Also my first multi-chapter fic.(edited)

Okay so.......Â
http://archiveofourown.org/works/10829463/chapters/24033585Â - This is probably my most popular fic, "Leather" it's nicknamed The Ass Fic, becuase it's basically all about how much Dazai loves Chuya's perfectly shaped, firm and pert ass. It's a wip at 11chapters so far. However, I treat this like a sitcom fic, each chapter is like an episode of a comedy show.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/10742775/chapters/23813706Â - This is "The Seasons" and my first multichapter fic I had ever written. Most people who follow and read my humour fics would probably find this a bit weird because this is legitimately a 5 chapter romance fic sorta slow burn skk. It's based on an ADA tempered Dazai coming back and taking the helm of the Port Mafia, (sorta mentioning he's reforming it), with the focus on him realizing he's maybe in love with Chuya. And I aged them up here so it's my take on how older and more mature skk can get together and actually make a healthy relationship.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/11009571Â - "The Redhead Gets The Upperhand" - I was conflicted on which fic to choose for my third. I have 3 fave oneshots, and I know some of the others are funnier (I have been so told, haha), but I feel like I really got the pacing of my humour writing the best in here. It's basically Chuya playing Dazai and Dazai knowingly and willingly playing along. I had fun with the idea that Chuya sends Dazai increasingly risque selfies while Dazai is at work during the day. XD

http://archiveofourown.org/works/9386330/chapters/21248921 - Description; Okay so I have several fics, all of which are pretty fortunately well-regarded (thanks!), but this one is my first and is by a mile my favorite. Inline with canon and captures the way that I think modern SKK works, with both of them kind of orbiting around each other due to being so closely attached as children but without necessarily being very affectionate. Also, Chuuya gets the upper hand and does not die.

âYou Wonât Lose Me (So Donât Leave Me Behind)â http://archiveofourown.org/works/9352388 I donât actually expect anyone to read this all this week because it is a multi-chap fic but it is the one that I am the most proud of. Itâs the first multi-chap fic that Iâve ever successfully completed, the word count makes it about as long as the third Harry Potter book, and it was written for my friend Lady based on our soukoku rp where Dazai convinces Chuuya to join the ADA. Itâs my proudest work, I love it more than anything.Â
âFair Enoughâ http://archiveofourown.org/works/9054943 My longest oneshot ever and something I am particularly proud of because tealillie recced it which absolutely made my day. Itâs a flowershop AU with a twist--Dazai is still a detective and Chuuya is an ex-convict, and Chuuya gets it bad for this detective; so bad he develops the hanahaki disease.
âAbsolutely Ridiculousâ http://archiveofourown.org/works/9607931 a bit short and fluffy about how Chuuya and Dazai like to take baths together. This is what really got me into wanting to write more fluff about these two and I just think itâs really funny? Iâm very proud of it.
@leio13
Yo! Here are my fics! (I had four actually, but oh well, one of them is barely soukoku anyway):Â
Snow Day(http://archiveofourown.org/works/8838169): Chuuya notices a mysterious brunette collapse in the snow. "the stranger collapsed. He fell face-first into the two-feet snow blanket. Amused, Chuuya watched for a minute, waiting for the strange brunette to push himself out of the snow, but he didnât, and snow began to lightly accumulate onto the back of his thin brown jacket. Oh shitâŠ"
Still Alive(http://archiveofourown.org/works/11260242): It's Dazai's birthday, and Chuuya finally decides to give him what he wants. "Chuuya inhaled slowly, his breath trembling between his lips, and reentered the apartment. He strolled into the bedroom, sweat dripping down his forehead. 'Okay, Dazai. Iâm ready.' "'Okay, Chuuya.' Dazai lay still on the white sheets with a small angelic smile gracing his face. He had even changed into a suit for the occasion. It all hurt Chuuya so much."
The Secret Garden (http://archiveofourown.org/works/11070258/chapters/24687762): Dazai, the son of a rich lord, stumbles upon a servant in the courtyard, but the servant isn't supposed to be there. What will happen next? (a multi-chapter fic in the works) "Amongst the array of wild flowers, blooming festively in a multitude of colors, Dazai spotted the most novel specimen leaning flush against the large, vine coiled trunk of one of the several trees that shaded the area. Dazai crept closer. The creature, which he soon reasoned was one of the younger servants, had bright, unkempt hair that fell to his shoulders in messy curls. The boy had the palest skin Dazai had ever seen, almost as pale as the sanguinaria planted nearby, and was currently asleep. Small splotches of sunlight waltzed across his innocent face through the leaves. It was a sight Dazai wouldnât dare disturb if his curiosity and longing for novelty had been any less overwhelming."(edited)
@unfortunatesylveon
http://archiveofourown.org/works/11390715 Hey everyone, this is my first and only fic I've written. I'm genuinely proud of it ^^
@kevindxy
http://archiveofourown.org/works/11363979 Â this is the skk fic that i'm happiest with because it's apocalyptic themed and i think i captured the mood of it better than i usually do in my writing ^^
@catsbythegreat
"the beautiful various dreams" http://archiveofourown.org/works/11249238 is a coma au that I thought about for a while and I really like how it turned out because I was scared for a while of trying to write dreams and reality mixing together.Â
"Mistake" http://archiveofourown.org/works/10609371 I really enjoyed writing this idea that working in the Mafia has effects and dealing with the effects in a place where you can't show weakness is incredibly hard. This one also had a weird format that I had to plan a lot, and I was happy to pull it together.Â
"Once More" http://archiveofourown.org/works/8897146/chapters/20391742 I don't expect people to read this because it's long af but it's basically my love letter to SKK and exploring their relationship and it's also one of the few longfics that I've actually seen through to a conclusion. So I'm proud that I finished it. It wasn't meant to be a longfic.
KellyÂ
"And I Will Chase You Forever, If That's What It Takes" http://archiveofourown.org/works/11354586 This is my favourite fic I did for skk week. Â I put a lot into it. Â It's pretty Chuuya centric with lots of young soukoku and it looks at how Chuuya deals with the imbalance between him and Dazai. Â (Also I'm a sucker for happy endings, even when they're mine)
"Winter Wonderland" http://archiveofourown.org/works/9102799 This is the purest fluff I have ever managed to write. Â Nobody suffers at all, which in and of itself is an accomplishment. Â Plus I had a great time writing it!
"Needs" http://archiveofourown.org/works/8541640 I like the different interactions in this one. Â Lots of Chuuya hurting and Dazai comforting. Â It highlights a softer side to Dazai and shows how aspects of their dynamic developed.
 @cyuya-nakahara
http://archiveofourown.org/works/10768806 You're Insufferable (We're Inseparable) this one is really important to me because it's a detailed look at the growth of their relationship, and is intended to cover everything. it's an intrinsic look at both sides.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/10657617 A Typical Tuesday Night This one is a oneshot, set in the same verse as yiwi. I'm really proud of how it came out, the feelings I wanted to convey are, I feel, very well represented.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/10817004 A Different Sort Of Dance I really like the interactions I write in this one. it's on going and on pause, but I think what's there is worth a read. I like my writing and description in this one.
