So as much as I love Taiwanese BLs, I have nothing to contribute to this conversation since I don't hear anything. I only unmuted Dead Friend Forever's finale last week because someone else commented that it sounded like something was burning at the end, which is how I connected it to the beginning, but if I'm going to unmute a show, it'll probably be a Japanese BL because Japan knows how to use silence.

You should write a post about this because I know there are other music people out there who would like this conversation.

this is just my opinion but i think any good media needs obsession behind it. it needs passion, the kind of passion that's no longer "gentle scented candle" and is now "oh shit the house caught on fire". it needs a creator that's biting the floorboards and gnawing the story off their skin. creators are supposed to be wild animals. they are supposed to want to tell a story with the ferocity of eating a good stone fruit while standing over the sink. the same protective, strange instinct as being 7 and making mud potions in pink teacups: you gotta get weird with it.

good media needs unhinged, googling-at-midnight kind of energy. it needs "what kind of seams are invented on this planet" energy and "im just gonna trust the audience to roll with me about this" energy. it needs one person (at least) screaming into the void with so much drive and energy that it forces the story to be real.

sometimes people are baffled when fanfic has some stunning jaw-dropping tattoo-it-on-you lines. and i'm like - well, i don't go here, but that makes sense to me. of fucking course people who have this amount of passion are going to create something good. they moved from a place of genuine love and enjoyment.

so yeah, duh! saturday cartoons have banger lines. random street art is sometimes the most precious heart-wrenching shit you've ever seen. someone singing on tiktok ends up creating your next favorite song. youtubers are giving us 5 hours of carefully researched content. all of this is the impossible equation to latestage capitalism. like, you can't force something to be good. AI cannot make it good. no amount of focus-group testing or market research. what makes a story worth listening to is that someone cares so much about telling it - through dance, art, music, whatever it takes - that they are just a little unhinged about it.

one time my friend told me he stayed up all night researching how many ways there are to peel an orange. he wrote me a poem that made me cry on public transportation. the love came through it like pith, you know? the words all came apart in my hands. it tasted like breakfast.

Finally finished my most ambitious Hatchetfield project yet. Every box in the border represents a different Nightmare Time, as well as Hey Melissa, Trail to Oregon, Workin’ Boys, the BBQ monologues and Peanuts the Hatchetfield Pocket Squirrel. It is completely okay if you find it uncomfortable and can't listen to it. That is, and always will be, okay. But to say it's glorifying SA??? Or that it's just there as a plot device? That isn't okay. Jorge took the topic extremely seriously and presented it in a good and productive way. But it being mentioned at all is a fucking problem???

Now, of course, people cope in different ways, and as long as it doesn't harm anyone or themselves, that perfectly fine! Some people are extremely uncomfortable with seeing any mention of it regardless of what it is, others like seeing media where they have some representation. For an example, I used to be the former in the beginning, but realized that seeing rep, and the Sa'ers getting their karma, comforts me. It a very close second to Odysseus for me as favorite. Some people want that, some people don't. Both are completely valid for either.

But that doesn't mean that it's bad. It doesn't mean it shouldn't be there at all. Can people who like being represented have something to themselves? Can people be represented without others running around saying 'this shouldn't have been in there at all!' or 'It's glorifying!'? Is that so difficult to ask for?

Penelope owns a golden chain.

It is a thick, large piece with two cuffs connected to one end of it, made of robust metal that still shines beautifully years later. It stretches perhaps some four metres, at most, and the clasp in the middle allows her to twist it tighter if she wants it to. The blacksmith she had commissioned it from had given her two copies of the key- one of which she'd tossed off of a high cliff, and the other that she keeps safe in a locked box in her room.

It can clasp to her bed, to the throne and to the bath flooring. She had it enchanted by a witch on the run from a neighbouring kingdom in exchange for security, to never cross the limits of the shoreline- so she never loses it, she'd said. She had won a favour off an alchemist in a bet and gotten it spelled to never break. She polishes it every day carefully to look it's best before she leaves the room.

It has only one use.

"I will hobble you like a horse," She hisses to her husband when he returns to her after twenty years. Adjusts herself and leans down to whisper in his ear, "I will chain you down like a common beast, cut out that silver tongue of yours so you can no longer get into trouble, break your fucking legs."

The chain clinks as Odysseus gasps for air. Penelope smiles and traces the edge of his adoring, breathless grin. "You are not allowed to leave me ever again."
