I don't think I've ever been so f**king excited about a drama. We have IU, Park Bo Gum, Kim Won Seok (director of My Mister, Signal and Misaeng) and Lim Sang Choon (writer of Fight For My Way and When the Camellia Blooms). There's just no way this won't be life-changing.

The biggest issue that I’ve discovered i have with romance kdramas is the narrative shift from female to male lead. A kdrama will suck me in with a soft slightly quirky narrative about a female lead trying to change her life, she’ll meet and fall in love and then her narrative is over. Then we’ll get to the male lead’s narrative which will be a crazy plot about a murder mystery, a family scandal or revenge. A lot of times these are definitely not well executed shifts in the writing.

Bir yandan kasabanın sıcak atmosferinde huzur bulurken, diğer yanda Yong-Sik’in samimiyetiyle aşka tekrar inanabilirsiniz. Kesinlikle zaman ayırmaya değer.

When the Camellia Blooms is a series that captivates viewers with both its story and acting performances. The main focus of the story is the relationship between Dong-Baek (Gong Hyo-Jin), a single mother, and Hwang Yong-Sik (Kang Ha-Neul), a pure-hearted and deeply loving police officer. However, it’s not just a love story we are watching; a layered narrative unfolds with the colorful townspeople, ghosts of the past, and the shadow of a serial killer.
First of all, I have to say, Gong Hyo-Jin once again proves her uniqueness. Her natural acting is so powerful that you find yourself crying with her in one scene and laughing alongside her in the next. While her beauty might be debatable, her on-screen charisma is unquestionably beyond dispute. On the other hand, there’s Kang Ha-Neul… Those who watched Moon Lovers will surely remember how he made us pull our hair out. Here, with the character of Yong-Sik, he appears so innocent and boyish that he manages to erase his previous bad image. He portrays a childish, pure, yet strong lover wonderfully.
The series also places a lot of emphasis on its settings. I realized that I truly enjoy stories set in small towns. This story begins with a mother and son who move to the seaside town of Ongsan. Dong-Baek opens a bar called "Camellia" there. Although being a single mother running a bar becomes a subject of gossip in the small town, her resilience and ability to stay standing for years show us what a strong woman she is, forming the core of the story. Over time, the bar and the town's general atmosphere become almost like characters themselves. It’s so warm, so realistic that you feel like having a coffee there and chatting with Yong-Sik. The impressive selection of filming locations directly invites the viewer into that world.
As for the supporting characters, they are all gems in their own right. From the town’s gossiping residents to Dong-Baek’s adorable son, everyone contributes to the story. Especially the characters who enter and exit Dong-Baek’s life help us understand how strong yet fragile she is. The acting among the supporting cast is so strong that you realize everyone’s presence in this story is meaningful. If you’ve recently watched some shows with weaker acting, this one makes you feel like you’re in a safe zone.
Regarding the plot… romance, drama, and suspense are all blended together. But this mixture doesn’t create a tiring mess for the viewer. On the contrary, the layers of the story support each other. The transitions between the small-town story and the serial killer thriller are handled quite successfully. Was the suspense element necessary? I’m not sure, but its presence wasn’t bothersome either. Despite the warm atmosphere, the excellent acting, and the detailed storytelling, there were a few minor points that bothered me. In some episodes, the pacing slows down a bit. Dong-Baek’s constant passivity against the meddling of those around her can get a little irritating after a while. However, these shortcomings do not overshadow the overall success of the series.
When the Camellia Blooms is truly a good choice for those looking for something both emotional and fun. While you find peace in the warm atmosphere of the town, you can also find yourself believing in love again thanks to Yong-Sik’s sincerity. It’s definitely worth the time.

and mind you most of these shows do not require it AT ALL like why derail a good show good vibes plot like that 😭
and additionally the criminal stories are never well thought out which is why they rush it in one episode. like y'all just ruined everything
It’s 2023 … I need k dramas to stop with the murder mysteries in rom coms! WRAP IT UP!!

-Be Melodramatic
episodes: 16
my rating: 6/10
*I put recommendations after my reviews if you're looking for recommendations based on shows (+I include the reason so if you like one specific trope I might've based a rec on that :)
I saw this in my recommended and having seen some funny tiktoks about it I started watching expecting a simple romcom style k-drama. However, to describe this show I think the show itself said it best "it's about the characters rather than the plot." (or smth similar Im not going back to find the exact quote)
Recently I have really been enjoying dramas that are more about the characters than the plot. I also enjoyed the way they portrayed dealing with grief and the reaction of the people around her. Throughout this show I learned that despite what I want, as a viewer, the characters personalities are more important. So, I enjoyed that some ended up with people I expected and some didn't and some were left ambiguous. (Though I really didn't like Lee Jae-hoon being hinted at getting back together with his ex in the last episode. Atleast that is what I interpreted that as, and I personally feel like he wouldn't and his ex wouldn't either)
Though, being honest, I tend to skip through a lot of parts in k-dramas. I enjoyed the main pairings scene in the first episodes but I found myself skipping through their scenes later on as I was more hooked on the "side couples" and generally found their story throughout the show more entertaining and interesting. Though as I didn't watch those parts I cannot say they weren't entertaining and I also have a tendency to like the side couples a little more.

My recommendations based on this show:
-Run on ( main leads had quirky and quick witted banter and the story is also focused more on the characters rather than plot)
-My liberation notes (a more sad version of this but also follows a group of people in their 20s/30s also has Son Suk ku)
-Fight for my way (also follows friends who are experiencing the ups and downs of life while being comedic)
-Twenty (movie and less dialogue focused but follows a group of friends throughout their late teens into late 20s also had comedy)
also I'm just going to add two hyoerspecific recs
-Jugglers (if you enjoyed the single mother plus younger man pairing, though you will have to put up with them being a second couple again)
-when the camellia blooms (again a single mother plus man (tbh i don't remember if he's younger but might've been) though this is a thriller crime romcom (iykyk))

the red camellia is undeniably soukoku's flower to me. they bloom in the cold, through snow and winter chill. they're at their most beautiful in the harshest conditions when everything else is dormant or dead. they're a symbol of perseverance and strength and passion. but at the end of the line, they 'behead' themselves when they die, refusing to drop petal by petal, choosing to go when they're still beautiful, refusing to compromise the rest of the tree by rotting on the branch.
#idk they just remind me of how chuuya willingly puts himself through hell for those he loves#corruption is breathtaking but its not sustainable ( obviously ) and#camellia trees open many buds in succession#because they die so quickly ultimately putting great strain on the tree for the sake of securing a successful blooming cycle#they're extremely susceptible to rot and root disease#the 'beheading'#symbolized a noble death to samurai and warriors#who would choose death over showing weakness and dishonor#camellia flowers drop from the rest of the tree#like they can't bear to die a slow death#and bring down the beauty of the flowers that surround them#like dazai#who puts himself in isolating#and dangerous scenarios#because even if he doesn't succeed ( he always does ) at least he'll go out of sight and out of mind#he faces enemies alone#even when he doesn't have to#argh#<- guy who is really normal about watching the camellia tree outside of their window bloom and die over the last few months#rare instance of niko yapping enjoy it
