botanists may technically be biologists, but the gulf of difference between "guy who stays inside 24/7 under fluorescent lights testing whether rats react to the newest antidepressant with a sufficiently side effect laden response" and "guy who goes in the woods and counts the number of ericads and appreciates the beauty of nature" is so vast they may as well be two different species of creature

r/whatsthisplant is a great subreddit to follow for me as a way to vent my usually carefully hidden tendency to be elitist about knowledge. "It's a cyclamen, you dumb motherfucker" I mutter as I scroll past post #11 of the day where someone asks what an extremely common garden flower is

I just saw two posts on r/whatsthisplant that went like this:
Post title: “is this a stinging nettle”
Image attached: some kind of thistle
(I’ve seen thistles plenty of times where I live but have no idea what specific kind they are… there’s also poison hemlock, trumpet vine, pokeweed, potential poison ivy (either that or it’s some vine), and mulberries growing along the fence separating my back yard from the farm behind it)

highly saturated flowers
reddit user r/lordgeni explains:
It might be that the camera incorporates a lot of UV data into it's algorithms.
Phone cameras often capture light which is just outside the boundaries of visible light on the spectrum and some of them use that data to bolster the pictures by brightening the closest visible colours.
Flowers reflect at lot of UV and appear really bright in that part of the spectrum (some have completely different patterns under UV or even arrows pointing to the nectar).
So, they may actually be a better representation of the flowers than you get from your own eyes.

A few months ago, I posted a photo of some weird-looking plant I came across while walking my dog to the r/whatsthisplant to ask for help identifying it. I was stupid and in the post title specified that it was in Ukraine. I really should've said "Eastern Europe" instead.
The replies got flooded with comments like "Ukraine? Isn't it a war zone?", "And you go on walks there? Are you even allowed?", "Why aren't you underground?", "Why are you even thinking about plants IN UKRAINE right now? wtf?" and some much more insensitive "jokes" about how you can find body parts on the ground in Ukraine, not plants. I had to delete the post because reading these things was almost unbearable.
I understand that not everyone knows what war actually is, what it looks like or how people behave during it. But it's not that hard to realize that millions of people can't just freeze in time, lose all their interests and activities, hide underground and wait for death. Life (however traumatic, painful, frustrating, frightening, etc.) still goes on for those who are alive.

Sometimes it’s the goddess of trash,
And that’s okay!

I hate it when teachers insult you because of your health. I have weak immunity. It's a verdict, a lot of people will understand me. Today, after the illness came to school. The teacher started humiliating me because I wasn't at school for two weeks. She also began to slander me, saying that I often skipping school. Why can teachers insult me because of ill-health? That's not right! I hate this teacher, she brought me to tears. Why should I be reprimanded for feeling well? What's wrong with this world?

I have no idea what kind of flower/plant this is, but I thought it was pretty enough to photograph. Now that flowers 🌺 have come to represent #petalsforarmor, I greatly admire the symbol of growth and beauty even in my own life. So, thanks @yelyahwilliams again for being an artist to which I can relate. • • • #flower #flowers #plants #naturephotography #flowerphotography #plantphotography #whatsthis #whatisthis #whatsthisplant #hayleywilliams #yelyahwilliams https://www.instagram.com/p/B87IOVVJhLp/?igshid=142ptvwiknya5

Teeny tiny buds! Idk what they are but my biology professor gave them to me so we shall see. I’m not normally a plant person I swear. Am I becoming a green witch?? Is it really this easy to fall from fundamentalist cult to down a path of respecting nature like a sane human being???

Harry Styles was in love and it wasn't with me. I need to get over my obsession with him falling in love with me. Ok. I'm not 12 anymore wake the fuck up because I'm going to end up marrying a man who hits me every time I forget to make his sandwich. And that's on watermelon sugar.
