After their home in Rafah was destroyed and being forced to live in makeshift tents, the Abu Alwan family was able to rent a small space in an apartment building in Gaza. The Abu Alwan’s have 3 small children, including chronically ill infant twins. The last time they were living on the street, the twins became so ill that they became jaundiced! shimaa, also spelled shaima in english, is a talented 22 year old graphic designer from gaza. before the war started, she planned to get her master's degree. unfortunately, the war has stolen that dream away, along with her home and the lives of her family members.

“Between zero and three years of age, children’s feet size changes every three months, and you need roughly 15 sizes between zero and nine, before attaining final foot size at 13 years. We figured out the problem that while feet grow, their shoes do not.”

What the podiatrists explained to him was that children have a broader footprint than adults, due to their not having worn shoes for most of their lives like adults. Tens of thousands of nerve endings provide the feedback needed for children to understand how to use the miraculous musculature in their feet to walk and run.

Most infantile and childhood shoes don’t consider this, and based on the frequency at which parents need to buy new shoe sizes, proper foot function is probably never even taken into account, and the occasional stuffing of toddler feet into shoes too small or too large, can disrupt this critical muscle development.

“We wanted to give children the right fit for all cycles. We chose one shoe to cover three sizes that allow 18 mm growth. We took inspiration from how a flower blooms from the bud stage to the fully-flowered stage. The transition happens organically every day. We applied this concept to the shoe,” said Mittal.

“We started working on a shoe that flexes as per the feet. Simply put, as and when the feet grow either from the front or back or sideways, and when a child wears this shoe, it expands accordingly and takes the shape and contour of their feet. That’s why children feel comfortable wearing such shoes,” he adds.

The shoes are priced between Rs 1,800 and Rs 2,600, ($22 – $31) and are available internationally as well, provided that international buyers have either an Indian bank, or Google Pay, Amazon Pay, or WhatsApp Pay.

The shoes are fairly new on the marketplace but have already generated 21 lakh, or Rs 2.1 million ($25,000) in revenue."

2024 in what made me happy: a misc list

the broadcast schedules of cdrama. this year, for the first time, i finished a cdrama because i saw one gif set of wu jinyang telling wang xingyue that he was handsome in the pouring rain. after the double, i watched and loved love like the galaxy, watched and loved amidst a snowstorm of love. then, i began watching and loving blossom as it aired new episodes every single day. i love what this has done to my drama-watching routines because it's not as fickle as a binge drop and it's not as sedate as weekly drops.

no, but weekly drops too. especially, only murders in the building and running to reddit to see what all the hot new theories are. and, culinary class wars — that was a good month.

i refused to listen to podcasts, and it made some small room to listen to other, more useful, voices. i didn’t finish books i cared little for. i closed tabs and deleted bookmarks more often. i didn't attend any weddings, in an attempt to recover from the weddings i did attend in 2023 and the 2025 invitations currently dinging on my whatsapp.

got a job, hated it, found some courage to turn back on the excellent pay, and left it. got another job soon enough, one that now keeps me on my toes but isn't painful on my heels.

Dad's

All of the parent online (and in person I guess) groups I am in are 95%-99% women. Then time and again one man will join and he's always 100% obnoxious. The NYC special needs Whatsapp group for kids going into Kindergarten next year is very active. Lots of messages every single day. A few mom's whose kids went through the process last year started it and provide a lot of useful information. I'm fairly confident one of the leading mom's special interest is "Nyc special needs services" because she knows EVERYTHING! It's all very helpful - overwhelming but helpful. I happen to know her from some other event - even though she lives in Queens - far from me.

Anyway, a Dad joined a month or so ago and he's so, so obnoxious. Every single time someone post anything he asks questions that are very clearly answered. Post a zoom link to a helpful talk about whatever. He will reply with "what time?" Despite it listing the time on line two of the invitation. He argues when people share information. He has clearly done zero research and expects everyone to hand feed everything to him. Then will argue about how it doesn't make sense. Someone posted about a baseball league for special needs kids. He ask why would someone pay X amount of money, etc? The poster did not run the league - just sharing. The leader of the group has now started saying "huh?" to many of his questions. Anyway, he's not making Dad's look good.
