Pufferfish vs Porcupinefish

When people think of Pufferfish, they usually are actually thinking of porcupine fish! So what's the difference?

Pufferfish inflate themselves for self defense. Their fat body means they struggle to move and rely on their fins to swim.

Their livers contain tetrodotoxin which can kill humans so they need to be prepared very well. They all have four teeth and they lack scales.

Porcupinefish are also able to puff up. Their spines are modified scales, which irritate their predators and make them harder to swallow.

Like pufferfish, they contain a toxin, but it is inside them so stepping on them isn't fatal.

So, if you're curious, check if they have scales [spikes] or not!

Which one of these is a pufferfish? Look closely.
