9-1-1 4x04 Reaction
Spoilers under the cut
Buddie for comfort:
Saving the parents for last because jesus fucking christ thatâs a rant, and also, Iâm functioning on very little sleep so this may be completely disjointed and rambly:
I am in love with Buck and Eddie trying to solve the crime together and I wish they would re-film that scene without face masks
Because they so would be into true crime, like Eddie pretends to be cool but heâs a secret nerd, and he loves to nerd out with Buck, so it makes total sense that they watch crime documentaries together like COME ON
Iâm incorporating this into a fic somehow
May Grant the 911 operator đ„đ„đ„
Gratuitous shirtlessness in the form of Albert and Chimney, thank you very much 911
Albert fucking RUNNING AWAY FROM CHIMNEY 10/10 comedy
And then Chimney RUNNING AWAY FROM THE REST OF THE TEAM 10/10 comedy as well
Albert throwing a whole wheel of brie into the oven? Like just throwing it in there? Literally just throwing it in there
I donât know why they added that in but Iâm not mad at it
Chimney making friends with the mad bomber after the preview was like âIS CHIMNEY GONNA DIE????â no heâs gonna make a new friend and then brain him with an oxygen tank duh
Well, I guess itâs about that time to talk about the worst parents in the show, so here we go:
Some of this is gonna be speculation because obviously we donât know how this all played out, but we can make some guesses. My theory is that Daniel the dead brother died... perhaps saving Buck when he was only very little, hence Buck not remembering it, and his parents... asking Maddie not to tell him?
What even the FUCK though
Why would you ask your NINE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TO LIE TO HER LITTLE BROTHER ABOUT THEIR OTHER BROTHER WHO DIED
And how the hell do you cover something like that up? Did they simply move away from friends and family so no one would ever talk about it? Did they box up all the pictures and memories and everything and just... fucking... MOVE ON? Or not move on, because they have obviously never forgiven Buck for whatever the hell happened.
Okay, this is my speculation:
The parents are somehow responsible - for example, an accidental drowning (I donât think this is what happened, this is just an example). So hypothetically, theyâre at the beach, and Buck is a toddler, and the parents arenât paying attention and he wanders into the sea and gets swept out; Daniel comes to his rescue and dies in the act of saving him (this thing happens in Australia all the time, hence why Iâm using it as an example - swim between the flags, gang!).
So then you have the parents who are ultimately responsible for not paying attention, you have the unavoidable tragedy of one of the children dying, and the way they coped with this terrible tragedy was to place the blame on Buck (even though it wasnât his fault, at all) and pretend that Daniel had simply never existed.
This means that Buck spends his life living in the shadow of the older brother who was glorified, who died saving him, and Buck has no idea why he can never please his parents and why they donât love him. This is why theyâre checked out as parents, because one of their kids died, and instead of seeking therapy, they decided to live a lie and blame their son for something he had no fucking control over.
So setting all that aside, letâs talk about these two absolute fucking pieces of shit.
Theyâve alienated their children so much that both of them are absolutely terrified when they turn up. Buck is petrified. Heâs spent his whole life never living up to their expectations, never feeling good enough, or worthy enough, constantly being put down - no wonder he ran away to California to put some distance between them. And heâs finally in a good place, going through therapy, dealing with his issues, and now bam - his parents are back in town to screw up all of his hard work.
And Maddieâs just as freaked out, because sheâs trying to protect Buck from them. I feel like she has good intentions but her mistake is wanting Buck to have a relationship with people who donât necessarily want to have a relationship with him, and for telling them about him being in therapy (which I still donât understand, but I guess maybe the next episode will reveal the answer). To be clear, I donât think Maddie is wrong for having kept this secret. She was manipulated into it by her parents when she was only a child, and that is not her fault, at all. Sheâs been told sheâs doing the right thing and she hasnât questioned it, but now, she is.
And, importantly - if her parents were checked out mentally and emotionally, she had to do a lot of the heavy-lifting and parenting when it came to Buck, when she was just a little girl herself. Maddie is the reason Buck is as wonderful as he is - she raised him.
Now, back to the pieces of shit:
They didnât like Doug, so they washed their hands of Maddie, even though they lived in the same fucking town. So she was getting beaten up by her absolute monster of a husband, and ending up in hospital, and they were doing fucking nothing to intervene or help her.
THEY DIDNâT EVEN GO TO HER WEDDING. THEY SHOWED HER NO SUPPORT AT ALL. LIKE I CANNOT. All because they DISAGREED? SHEâS STILL YOUR DAUGHTER, like oh my god, I canât even.
She had to flee across the country to Buck in California to finally escape him, because their parents didnât care enough to help. Motherfuckers.
And then the whole âwe donât do hospitalsâ - bitch, they are your fucking CHILDREN. If your CHILDREN are in hospital, you are supposed to CARE. Buck got crushed by a ladder truck, he had an embolism and nearly died, he went through a tsunami and NOTHING? Nada? Maddie had to kill her husband after he nearly killed her, and NOTHING? Buck had to call to tell them what had happened!
And then to start crying and asking "I donât know what you expected us to do?â - like, bitch, FUCKING ANYTHING?
I mean
I cannot with these people
What kind of white WASP-y nonsense is this
Let me tell the story of when I had appendicitis - I was taken to the hospital by my friend at night, my mum lives two hours away - when she found out that it was appendicitis and Iâd be going in for surgery, she jumped in the car in the middle of the night and drove two hours to be with me, and I was a grown-ass woman at the time. It is not normal for parents not to care when their children are sick/injured/being beaten almost to death by their abusive husbands/getting crushed by a ladder truck. You mean to tell me that the footage of the crowd lifting the truck off their son didnât go viral? That they didnât see that?
Fuckers.
You donât like something so you just bury your head in the sand and pretend it doesnât exist? Your kids arenât perfect so you just wash your hands of them? Their problems donât matter, not when itâs all about you?
Narcissists.
Blaming the kids for everything, manipulating Maddie into doing their bidding - and still manipulating her as an adult, by bringing her gifts and driving across the country and being all, âwe want to be grandparents!â after everything? After letting her husband nearly kill her and blaming her for having bad taste in men? FUCKKKKKK
And the fucking BABY BOX. Do not even get me started on how ANGRY I WAS.
Like, I have friends with kids (I have cats, personally) so I know that theyâre busy, but to not have anything, as if heâs just not worth it.
Like I canât
It breaks my heart to think about his face, and the realisation setting in... to know that your parents donât love you? To have lived with that your whole life? Itâs so fucking gutting.
Like, obviously I am extra emotional because Iâm running on empty today, but god damn this episode just came along and punched me right in the face.
Also, Iâm making a BIG CALL, theyâre going to use the song âDanielâ by Elton John in the next episode:
Daniel my brother you are older than me Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal? Your eyes have died, but you see more than I Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky
100% theyâre using that song, Iâm calling it now, and if they donât, it is a wasted opportunity.
Okay, letâs end on a good note, because this has been a rant:
Eddieâs open concern for Buck; the fact that Buck tells Eddie about his therapy, that he feels comfortable opening up to him - that Eddie was there, watching Buck beat the shit out of the boxing bag and listening to him, and taking his side and reassuring him... that is next level shit and I am here for it.
I am not here for the return of Ana in the next few episodes but thatâs a future rant
Hopes for Buck Begins:
That the firefam - his real family - will rally around him, and that Buck and Maddie will take a united stand against their parents and tell them to get the fuck out of their lives.
Also I kinda want Bobby to meet the Buckleyâs? Just... for him to be horrified, I guess? I donât know, but I want Bobby to meet them and understand how awful they are and offer Buck some comfort as his surrogate father.
I would like Buck to be hugged by someone who loves him, please, because he needs it.
And selfishly, I want some kind of Buck, Eddie and Christopher scene, because they are also his family. Everyone in this show has their little family unit, and Eddie and Christopher are Buckâs.
Ana be damned

Adora, Catra & Trauma (Pt3)
(Part 1)Â (Part 2) (Part 4)
Full Show
An Analysis of the way Catra & Adora are affected by their respective traumatic experiences.
Relationship To Primary Abuser
Catra
Catra bases her identity around Shadow Weaver second only to Adora in power she has over her emotional states. Shadow Weaver abused Catra for essentially her entire life through psychological, emotional, and physical ways. We see her use her magic to immobilize Catra, terrorize her, and physical grab Catra throughout the show.
Starting from a young age she insulted and degraded Catra and said Catra's worth is based on rather Adora wants her. A key quote stated in Promise (1x11 )Â
Shadow Weaver:âYou have never been anything more than a nuisance to me! I've kept you around this long because Adora was fond of you, but if you ever do anything to jeopardize her future, I will dispose of you myself.âÂ
I believe this sets up the main dynamic better than anything.
Catra sees herself as worth nothing to Shadow Weaver, as only existing in relation to Adora and as always under threat. Catra deeply internalized this view of only mattering in how she measures up to Adora but continuously wanted to be more than a nuisance to Shadow Weaver. Catra is constantly pulled when it comes to shadow weaver between wanting love and being afraid, the essence of her disorganised attachment.
Up until Catra gained the right-hand man status to Hordak she was consistently in fear of Shadow Weaver. And afterwards, she didn't stop basing her worth on Shadow Weaver's perceptions.
Starting in season one Shadow Weaver and Catra show a mostly typical older child and abusive parent dynamic. Catra is willing to test boundaries but only so much. In  The Sword pt 2 (1x02 ) she saysÂ
Catra: âShadow Weaver is freaking out. It'd be funny if she weren't such a terrible person âÂ
showing she has accepted and can have humour about the situation. This continues for a while in  The Beacon (1x10)  we see dissonance all at once saying she doesnât need Shadow Weaver, seeks her approval, and even tries to offer comfort to Shadow Weaver.
In  Light Hope (1x12)  we see the first milestone in this dynamic with Catra overtaking Shadow Weaver in the social hierarchy. However, this doesnât change the fact that Catra still feels a need to be close to Shadow Weaver and to base her value off of her. She continuously goes to talk to Shadow Weaver to try and prove sheâs become better but only ends up with Catra subjecting herself to more of Shadow Weaverâs abuse.
In Signals (2x03) she bases what she should be doing off of what Shadow Weaver would have done.Â
Catra âI bet Shadow Weaver didnât have to deal with any of this" Â
After this she goes to Shadow Weaver for the answers. Her stated autonomy isnât present and we see Catra still seeing Shadow Weaver as the proper adult.
One of the most impactful moments takes place in  Light Spinner (2x06). In this episode, we see Catra deeply needs Shadow Weaver to love her and is protective over her mother. We can see Catraâs fear and unresolved attachment needs from her childhood fighting over how she should act. She has spent this season setting and then breaking her boundaries due to deeply wanting to be loved and respected. Catra is easily manipulated by Shadow Weaverâs semi-kind words and some of the only soft-touch she gets [before reuniting with Adora in season 5].
When Catra confronts Shadow Weaver Catra asks the questions every abused kid wants to ask:
"Why was I treated like that?" and "why was I never good enough?"
Shadow Weaver's response is one that is so common and destructive. "I suffered, so I think thatâs what you ought to as well," and âYou were never as good as your siblingâ or in this case Adora.
Catra rejects some of this explanation and then returns another abused child question: "what could I have done? I was just a kid"
Shadow Weaver mostly brushes this question and Shadow Weaver maintains her power by knowing her child so well. Shadow Weaver hits where it hurts, pointing out that she's being made second best and replaced again. She plays on Catra feeling less than and being so scared of being abandoned to get what she wanted, a way out. This breaks Catra's resolve strongly; we see her spiral through hypervigilance, anxiety and depression.
We see how much this affected Catra when Adoraâs explained Shadow Weaver went to the bright moon in Once Upon a Time in the Waste (3x03 ). Catra interprets this as Shadow Weaver abandoning her for Adora triggering a dissociative episode and leading into her suicide/homicide attempt.
The next time we see them together is in  Failsafe (5x11) . Catraâs immediate reaction to her being there is to move into hyperarousal of fight mode and then into flight and freeze. She is afraid and angry still, but she has finally put up more of a barrier, however, her presence still causes Catra to fear the loss of Adora.
Catra is deeply triggered by the touch of Shadow Weaver and it leaves her in a state of heightened flight response. This experience also brings out her older protective instincts we saw in season 1 and late-season 2 due to the way she knows Adora can get hurt like sheâs been hurt by Shadow Weaver. Catra overhears what she thinks is Adora giving into Shadow Weaver setting up the next set of actions in  The Heart pt 1&2 (5x12-13) . Causing Catra to leave due to the manipulation she knows sheâs experiencing.
When they next meet Catra is fully able to stand up to her stating it was no longer about her, a very strong statement. Even if she is still clearly hurt by the abandonment. Shadow Weaver is willing to help due to complex reasons, wanting to save the world as thatâs the âsideâ she chose, and some degree of responsibility for her daughters even if it's twisted and more about performing and then anything resembling love. Catra is affected by this crying at the loss of her mother. We donât get to know much about this fallout but it would be as complex as the history of adult children of abusive parents usually are.
Adora
Adora's relationship to Shadow Weaver, her mother and commander, is characterized by manipulation, fear and agitation. Shadow Weaver made her the golden child, the next hero and leader, responsible for others way too early and as an object to be used for power. All of these became the core ideas and schemas that Adora built her life on.
Adora lacked direct physical/magical abuse from Shadow Weaver but experienced a severe psychological and emotional abuse. An example is her being forced to watch and being blamed for the physical/magical abuse of Catra (Promise 1x11) . During their childhood, we see that the abuse worked to internalise the views of shadow weaver which gave Shadow Weaver an intense and continuous force in her life even when not present.
In  The Sword pt1 (1x01)  we see how Shadow Weaver wanted her to be the next force captain and believed her to be the best of the children she raised. We can tell Adora wanted to be the best having internalized these desires. Adora believed what she was taught wholesale on the ideological front as well and losing that belief when seeing the harm of war causes the first rupture in her connection to Shadow Weaver.
In the Shadows of Mystacor (1x07) has a few key moments. One is Adora admitting Shadow Weaver did âmom stuffâ which shows Adora understands Shadow Weaver as her primary attachment figure, ie the mother. Another key moment of this episode is Adora rejecting Shadow Weaverâs control for the first time. She verbally states her autonomy, affirms that the pain is not her fault and that Shadow Weaver shouldnât get to decide her life. Adora physically fights Shadow Weaver off and protects her new life, something that is one of the most powerful moments in their relationship. This is a rejection of not only her abuser but the life she was taught to want. She is choosing a new healthier life. This is solidified in after the confrontation she allows her friends to support her.
In No Princess Left Behind (1x09) Adora is physically assaulted and violated mentally by her mother figure. This is an attempt to try and bring her back under control. Something we know she has been trying to do this whole time, a very visceral moment of how much Shadow Weaver believed she owned Adora. This is a harsh and traumatic event for Adora.
We donât see them interact together fully until  The Price of Power (3x01).  We see Adora be willing to help Shadow Weaver both due to her ingrained responsibility and she doesnât want to see her mother figure die. Adora also needs to know whatâs going on and Adora is scared to not have some control in the situation. This fear of being out of control brings Adora to interact with her abuser.
Adora is also more confident that she wonât be directly manipulated anymore. She has learned most of Shadow Weaver's tactics and isnât vulnerable enough for them to work. The conversation they have here shows this personal growth Adora has experienced.
Shadow Weaver: âI knew you were different. You were...â
Adora: â- Special? No, what you always told me was that I didn't matter. I was special only as long as I obeyed you.â
However, the conversations between them also break the precarious hold on some sense of self Adora gained over the past through SHadow Weaver revealing she is a first one. This adds self confusion and distances her from others. This is important because her connection to others is the most powerful grounding tool Adra has learned to have.
Throughout this season Adora is continually agitated and stressed about Shadow Weaver being allowed in her safe space of Bright Moon. In Pulse (4x04)Â we see Adora be upset about Glimmer having asked for magic help from Shadow Weaver. She is understandably afraid of Shadow Weaverâs power and is scared of losing another friend to the damage Shadow Weaver caused. Shadow Weaver is a walking trigger to her childhood trauma leaving her implicit memories of shadow weaver as a figure of pain, magic as bad and both as a threat to friends on continuously.
In Princess Scorpia (4x06) Shadow Weaver continues to cause problems for Adora even when not there as her Black and White thinking on magic and will to keep shadow weaver from having control feed into the relational struggles Adora and Glimmer are having.
In Mer-Mysteries (4x07) we see Adora and Shadow Weaver interact and Adora is sure that Shadow Weaver is the spy and is in deep pain over the fact she believes she is hurting Glimmer. However, we see them take Shadow Weaverâs advice because even Adora can admit Shadow Weaver is great at manipulating others.
We see their next big moments in Failsafe (5x11) Shadow Weaver is willing to use Adora as a tool again, just like she had done her whole life. Shadow Weaver also works hard to break down any sense of autonomy Adora has and her newly healed connection to Catra, someone who would push back on Shadow Weaver in the most knowing way. These acts are harmful and while Adora tries to push back on Shadow Weaver multiple times the painful truth is that Shadow Weaver still has a power over her. While her attempts to use the comfort/assault patterns fail, Adora does need to try and save Etheria so the internal and external objectification continues.
In  Heart pt 1 (5x12) we see Adora talking with the mirage of Mara. Mara is trying to get Adora to want to stay alive, to have self-worth, to take her own needs into account and to give herself grace. Adora herself is arguing back that she doesnât have value on her own, she only matters in how she can be useful to others. Adoraâs words echo Shadow Weaver of her having to be She-Ra and that she should be willing to die for it. Adoraâs carrying this self-harming objectified view within her and itâs so defining of their dynamic.
This story ends in Shadow Weaverâs death, a complicated moment where Adora is clearly devastated by what happens and was almost helped by Shadow Weaver to be able to use the failsafe. The complications show through in her losing her mother, almost dying herself, and in an abuser doing one nice thing. This moment is complicated visually, narratively and relationally and is a good incapsulation of the lack of resolve abusive relationships with adult children can feel.
[A Word on âredemptionâ of Shadow Weaver
I don't believe shadow weaver is redeemed or a good person for her sacrifice. I think her reasons were complex but I don't believe she has ever had or a healthy love for her "daughters". I don't think we should consider this worthy of having forgiveness for her actions based on one singular action. Once action doesn't outweigh years of abuse and trauma.]

it was only ever thus (4x04 reaction fic)
(an angsty 4x04 silverflint reaction fic. you can read it on ao3Â too, but i thought iâd post it on tumblr as well since itâs relatively short and i think itâs relevant to some of the questions people have about the ep.)
i. one irreplaceable thing
He says Thomas Hamiltonâs name, and youâre wondering why the fuck heâs bringing this up now. Heâs asking you if would trade the war to have Thomas back. Itâs a question youâve asked yourself before, plenty of times, a game you like to play to torture yourself on sleepless nights, a game of endless questions burrowing one after another, deeper and deeper into the black earth until you might as well burying yourself alive. If you could have Thomas back now, would you? What would Thomas even think of you now? Even setting the question aside of how you would feel to see him again, how would Thomas feel? Could he love you? Would he approve of your war?
Youâve played this game so often that youâve convinced yourself that he would, indeed, think your war is justified, and so that is what you tell Silver. But then Silver persists, insists on getting a proper answer out of you, and you still donât really understand why heâs asking all this now. To have somebody else ask you these questions that you often ask yourself pierces you all the more sharply. Assume, assume, assume. You donât want to fucking assume. Thomas is dead. But God, you think. Would you? Would you trade the war to make it so that he is alive and before you again? Would you? You cannot speak. You think: you would, you would, you would.
And then Silver says, âIt is some kind of hell to be forced to choose one irreplaceable thing over anotherâ, and you finally understand. The war and Thomas. You and Madi. He is saying that he doesnât know which of you he would choose. But he is also saying to you that are irreplaceable to him. Your throat closes up.
He was asking you the wrong question.
Youâd throw away the war for Thomas. You were fighting it for him in the first place: if he were truly alive, if the choice was between fighting the war and being with him, of course you would choose the latter. A strange sort of war you would be waging in his name if you wouldnât fly to his arms in a heartbeat if he were alive. You wouldnât shed this much blood for him if you didnât love him, and if he still loved you, if he would have you backâof course you would trade the war for that.
But the war is the war. It is death and destruction, streets piled with dead bodies and pooling crimson. Life over death: youâve got yourself back to a point where that seems like an easy choice to you again. Silver has got you back to that point.
And thatâs it, isnât it? The war can be traded away. But Silver. Silver. You have to look away from him, because what you are feeling for him right now is too much to bear. If he asked you to choose between him and Thomas, that would be the right question. One irreplaceable thing over another. He is calling you irreplaceable to him, and not acknowledgingânot allowing himself to be that to you, too.
You want to say to him that he is irreplaceable. To choose between him and Thomas: that would be an impossible choice. But in this moment, it is too much to admit. And surely he should already know that? Surely you have spent the past few months demonstrating that to him, with every kiss, with every touch? But here he is, and he has declared to you that Madi is where he is at his most vulnerable. Not you, not you, not you.
To say out loud right now that he is irreplaceable to you: you cannot do that. He is where you are at your most vulnerable. All you want is for him to be happy. You think about how you had your hand in his thick curls earlier, how you had tasted metal in his mouth, how his eyes had been bluer than the life-giving sky. You think about the way he looks at Madi, speaks of her, touches her with the desperation of someone holding onto the best thing in his life. You are not the best thing. How could you be? You are shadow and smoke, gunfire and open wounds. You are glad he found something better than you.
You will do whatever necessary to keep him safe. To keep her safe, too, for him.
And he will make the choice necessary to keep himself safe, and that is all that matters. You trust him to do that.
ii. trust me
âTrust me,â he says, and you watch as he drops his gun and his sword, as he steps through the gate, as he stands on the other side of it looking at you through the bars.
âTrust me,â he says, and all you can think about is the darkness of the forest all around you, and you asking for his last secret and him giving it to you, proffering his own gleaming soul to you with both hands. Telling you that this entire war is for love: that that is how much he is capable of loving someone. And then when you theorised that you might be his end, he shrugged it off and looked you in the eye and grinned, suggesting that he might love you so much, too.
âTrust me,â he says, and all you can think about is the first time he undressed in front of you, all his dark attire cast aside, his boots and jacket and shirt and trousers, until he was utterly naked, his pale skin an undiscovered coastline, a bay of sun-warmed sand. The first time he kissed you, his mouth a sweet cove, the safest place you have ever known, secluding you from the rest of the world and enwrapping you in a quiet calm. The first time he let you tie him up, and though the ropes were around his wrists, you felt as you tied them that you were binding yourself to him, a shipâs cables mooring you to the white shore of him, and you wanted no other harbour than this.
âTrust me,â he says, and all you can think about is the first time you woke up beside him, and he was still asleep, the milky light of dawn washing over him and making him look so much younger, his heart thudding slowly in his bare chest where your hand lay over it, keeping him alive, alive. The night before, you had felt that heartbeat pounding in his throat, when you squeezed your hand around it and he let you, let you plunge into the sea of his body and take him, all of him.
âTrust me,â he says, and all you can think about is how whenever you worried you would be his end, he would hush you with a kiss, and once, he murmured, âEven so Iâd choose this,â and your own heart stopped still in your ribcage.
âTrust me,â he says, and all you can think about is how when you saw him after you spent the night with Madi for the first time, and you told him, he only smiled, his eyes squinting in the sun, and said, âYou look happy.â How when you tried to reassure him that it didnât change anything between you and him, he nodded and said, âI didnât think it would.â
âTrust me,â he says, and all you can think about is earlier, standing in front of the entrance to the fort, finally letting him know what happened with Billy. Implying to him that you are concerned that he would prove to be Madiâs end, that you are unsure of what this means for you and him, that you are frightened that if it ever comes down to choosing one over the other, you donât have a clue what you would choose. That you hope it doesnât come to that. And he wasnât upset that you didnât indicate that you would choose him. He wasnât afraid. He accepted it, and believed in you, and he was almost smiling when he said, âI suppose the good news is thatâs how we finally know weâre getting somewhere interesting,â and you felt like you were holding his heartbeat in your hands all over again.
âTrust me,â he says, and all you can think about is how when you had managed to get one moment alone with him recently, youâd almost folded, almost broken down in tears while you kissed him and touched his soft, soft beard. Youâd said, âIâm new to this whole âloving two people at the same timeâ thing. Christ, Iâm new to this whole love thing. Is it really possible that Iâm not going to fuck this up?â And he had stroked your cheek and kissed your forehead and whispered, âI trust you.â
âTrust me,â he says, and of course. Of course you can do nothing else, everything within you crumbling to dust as you hear the clang of his weapons hitting the ground and the creak of the gate swinging open then shut, and you see his green eyes looking at you from the other side, wondering what you are thinking now.
